Review Adega - Johannesburg

Zainab Mohammed
I really enjoyed Adega today. My dad's fish was excellent. He ordered the Kingklip special. My mum ordered a Gluten free Kingklip special. It was a bit overcooked but it was still tasty. We ordered the Dynamite prawns as a starter and it was amazing. The best starter I've had in a long time. The pineapple and mango mocktail wasn't so nice but our awesome waitress Elisabeth took it back with a smile and they didn't charge. I ordered the Strawberry daiquiri and it still is the best in the whole wide world. The mint mocktail was nice too. Nice vibe and quiet ♥️

Absolutely brilliant, if you're looking for good halaal food, this is the place. Gaurenteed to leave satisfied.
CASA BAKALI
Nice Food and very yammy
Mahomed Salajee
Wonderful and warm ambience. Friendly service. Food is prepared and served fresh and hot. Stuffed calamari and/or chicken livers starters. Prawns are juicy and slip easily out of the shells. Delicious

Visiting from the UK, recommended by family. Absolutely amazing prawns!
FAEZA GAFOOR
We visited during the week day, so it was very quite. The presentation was in order. Felt the prawns were not fresh or over cooked. I was under the impression that the gratuity given to the waiters was voluntary, it was actually part of the bill. I especially enjoyed the 🍟.
Mehroon Khan
Excellent halaal restaurant. Good service with delicious food. Always popular with my family. Although famous for seafood we love the chicken and my son loves the pasta. Stuffed calamari starter is well worth a try

The food is nice. Presentation excellent. The seafood is fresh(you pay the price for that). Service satisfactory as long as it's not crowded(even though you're paying for 10%, their service is not worth so much). Not bad for once in a while eat out .

First time at this Adega Branch, visited during the week and was a bit sceptical when we found the place empty. However, when our meal was presented to us, the presentation was on point and the meal was freshly prepared hot and delicious. The waiter was very pleasant and professional. The price is affordable so we will definitely be frequent guests.

Not a fan of Fordsburg but this restaurant is one of the reasons I go there. Amazing Portuguese chicken and Prawns. For sides u have to add on the veg and a pasta and lastly close off with the homemade ice cream. Go with a group as most people do. Very reasonable pricing. Tips are included in the bill and the service is always great. Strictly halaal and no alcohol is served or consumed on the premises.

What a great place this was when it opened. Recently it has declined with regards to service and I often visit to find things unavailable or out of stock. The other day the oven was broken so no garlic roll!? Absurd. However the LM Chicken is simply unparalleled and that alone is worth 2 stars. Sometimes you don't care about a venue - food is good enough to overlook the rest!
Irfaan Moolla
Consistently good tasting food. Good portions, great friendly service. The place gets very busy so book in advance and preferably in the outside area because the inside area often gets quite noisy.

Just enjoyed an awesome lunch with good friends. Always professional service and excellent food from this particular branch! I've been enjoying their steaks, prawns and chicken for years. That peri peri sauce! 😋🌶🌶🌶

It was fine. Manager was good. Waiter gentleman that served us needs to get up to speed. He left the wine and never bothered to come around ever. We raised our hands many times to get his service. Prawns and chicken meals were awesome. And the fish Pango was melt in the mouth.
Josephine Tshabalala
The buffet was amazing, the staff made sure the prawns kept coming and the service was awesome. Not often you get such freshly made food at a buffet... loved loved loved everything.

A firm favourite with every visit to Johannesburg. The king prawns are a must

I always have a great time at Adega, this pass sunday, i was not happy with the food. I love prawns, but on sunday they were so bad!
Marise Briggs
Great food, excellent service. Their seafood is always fresh, i will be back for more!

Food and service was just great. Managers came around and spoke everyone at their tables. Made us feel welcome. Will definitely be back.

Always a Great Experience at Agenda Bryanston. Thank you.
Jeremy Pearce
Love the food. It has become a favourite of ours.
Arthur Salvado
Had dinner there and have been doing so for many many and my last visit is really my last. The service was smiley at its best and the food was not edible. The chicken was given to the car guard and I feel guilty because it was not fit for consumption. The prawns ....ouch ...cold on the inside and the sizes never change ex rot for the price. Score out of 10 ? ZERO
Louise
outrageous! so good its almost criminal. I had calamari with crispy onion rings with a greek side salad. all of the items were simply exploding in my mouth with flavor.
Patrick Smith
The service was exceptional and the food very good. Whatever we asked for we got in terms of well done steak and extra crispy chips and onion rings. It was cooked to perfection. The drinks are good to. Good family restaurant. Reasonably Priced.
Casandra
Shout out to Adega . We had a fabulous diner coupled extraordinary service, followed by the staff surrounding our table and sinning a south African chant. Truly lovely evening and great wat to end a long day.

Went for dinner last night.
The seafood platter was great.
However the sushi platter starter was terrible and bland and uninspiring sushi was served. Very disappointed..
Gabrielzaidman02
This restaurant used to be “quite” nice, however, over the last 2 years the quality has dropped dramatically. The quality of the food has become awful, and the service is really bad. They don’t even use table cloths anymore. Disgusting. Would not recommend.
Umashani Naidoo
A lovely dinner experience at Adega Bryanston. The food was delicious and prepared exactly as requested.: Gluten free and very tasty. The specially requested Vegetarian pasta was creamy and delicious
Thank you to Ragini. Much appreciated
We were pleasantly surprised when we got to the restaurant for lunch on Sunday. A buffet spread of yummy food which consists of about 60% of their menu items for R220 per person incl dessert.

Service was good and food delish, better than most Adela’s I have eaten at. Found the cocktails to be extremely sweet and weak though.

Highly recommended.
Imiel Bezuidenhout
Really great buffet , good seafood variety, friendly staff and great atomsphere. Would surely recommend this spot for a good night out with the misses or even just getting together with friends or family.
Food Hunter
Good food . Good people . When u compaire with their other outlets this is still the best . Tuli made our lunch . And management always on the floor to check the customers needs which is a very good . Once again thank u adega . See u soon .
Always enjoyed this place when it was at the Bryanston shopping centre. My wife and kids enjoyed the food. My kingklip was ok and the service was good. Fresh rolls were nice with the chilli.
The Schoeman Brothers
The food was good and tasty. But the ambiance and decor was quite bad because we were sitting in a parking lot. I like this place and recommend it for a light lunch.
Samantha Quigley
Had a very very average, mediocre meal. Will not be going back. Also found it to be very expensive for what you got. The waiter was great, but there was no interaction from management. The ladies bathroom stank, the doors were falling off the basin counter. The entire experience was less than satisfactory. Very disappointing.

Had dinner here last night, was quite impressed with the level of hospitality, attention to detail and they way they treat their patrons (even if it’s incredibly busy).

We had booked our table, so thankfully we didn’t have to wait and we were shown to our table and immediately attended to by our lovely waitron Vimbai.

For mains I ordered their Queen Queen Prawns, which were cooked to perfection. Another person I was with tried their half chicken and prawns dish, unfortunately the chicken was hard, dry and tough

Overall a pleasant experience
Robert
I normally go to Nandoos for Grill chicken because its almost same and its cheaper their. but for seafood combo i will always preferred to use this restaurant. and trust me its worth of money when you have their combo platter with prawns. so see you soon for my favorite combo with creamy spinach
Jenni From The Block
We had a power failure in our area so popped in here for supper with the kids.

The owner/host heard me say it was cold so offered a table with a heater.

The menu comes as a magazine, which we found odd, and strangely difficult to read through. We had to ask for a kid's menu as they didn't offer, but one was brought to us on request.

We ordered the prawn tempura and starter calamari to snack on. The calamari was quite bland but the prawn tempura was awesome. Big, plump prawns and perfectly non-oily, crisp tempura.

The fish fingers from the kid's menu was proper fish instead of the nasty rectangles you get at some restaurants.

As mains, we both had the LM chicken, the order was mixed up and I was given the hot and my partner the mild. The waitress blamed the kitchen but offered no apology or resolution once we pointed it out after eating some.

Overall, we found the atmosphere lacking, although it was a Monday night, the service ok and the food alright but expensive for what it was.

We all agreed we wouldn't choose to go there again, so not a big hit, although I might pop in just for the prawn tempura again....

We recently had dinner at Adega in Bryanston. They had some amazing specials on the King Prawns. And we decided to add on some chicken. Food was absolutely delicious and service was wonderful.
Zandi Phoshoko
Best prawns in town. The Tuesday buffet is a treat, but unfortunately you get full so quickly. Service was good, friendly staff. I would recommend this particular Adega - I haven't tried any of the other franchises.
Elsabé
Was there for the Tuesday special - seafood buffet. Was not disappointed! Friendly owner and staff and delicious food - sushi, veggies, pasta, crab in a curry sauce, pasta with seafood, creamy mussels, calamari and oh so many prawns! Delish!
Charlemagne Olivier
One of the best value restaurants in Johannesburg. Aside from the menu that looks like a mythic tome & terrible coffee, Adega provides the authentic Portuguese experience at the fraction of the price. Make sure to ask for their specials!
Himesh Mistry
I liked the original establishment in Bryanston Shopping Center. It was nice and cosy. But I like the new place even more! Sunday buffets are the best if you want to take a family out for a long Sunday lunch. Entertainment available as well but it seems to attract the older folks which I don't mind. Take your Saturday hangover and go and chill. Love it.
Diana Mak
Had the seafood platters for sharing. Its quite good value for money. The seafood was fresh & nicely season. The only downside I have is that there isnt much consistency with the service at Adega.
Nicholas Papas Thanos
Andrea and I have always been huge fans of the Adega and especially the one in Bryanston. Great service. and wonderful food. Well done guys, I am a happy trooper.
Eve
I love Adega's. This one is my second best. the Midrand branch still tops them for me.Nevertheless, Their food is divine and the ambience is lovely. Consistent great food and good service.
Rhonda Hamilton
Tuesday night Buffet special! A little pricey but if you are hungry and love prawns, well worth it! The service can be slow on busy nights - to be expected, but the buffet selection is great. Delicious seafood, excellent prawns. Sushi and a nice salad mix for the carb conscious. A great tuesday night out
Emily Smith
Adega has become quite a popular franchise and they are a good option for reasonably priced and tasty seafood. The queen prawns by the kilo are great value for money. I also tried their rice pudding which was rich and creamy.
Charmaine
Oh dear... Been holding off on reviewing this restaurant in the hopes that my last couple of experiences were just bad luck but sadly the declining trend has continued. Used to frequent this Adegas regularly but have been coming less often in the past few months after noticing a steady decline in the food and service. After my last experience though we will not be back. After waiting 30 min for our starters they finally arrive at the table with one of the main course meals. After informing the waitress that the pasta is actually a main course and sending it back to the kitchen we discover our starters are inedible. No butter or any kind of sauce used on the snails, just mounds of garlic and some cremated cheese. The prawn rissoles tasted a bit funny so after poking around pull out a very discoloured prawn that is clearly past its sell by date. Send both starters back and ask for the main course. The main course promptly arrives along with pasta which has now started to dry out a bit. Main course meals were ok but definitely nothing to shout about. Service was also poor as it is very hard to find your waiter or get anyone's attention. To our horror we also noticed a waiter at the bar pick up a napkin from a pile of what appeared to be used napkins and table cloths that were bunched up on a box and proceed to polish a glass with it before taking the same glass to a table with their drinks! Thought it might just be one waiters poor behaviour but after observing for a while saw several waiters retrieve used napkins from the same pile for polishing glasses before taking them to tables and even one waiter use the used tablecloth! Definitely will not be back.

Always been a fan of the Adega in Bryanston but my last two visits weren't worthy of bragging rights and I must admit I was slightly disappointed HOWEVER, having said that, despite the bland grilled chicken, the patrons were really friendly and made up for it with great service. Well done guys...just try to keep a level of consistency on the recipe front.

Felt like a cheap and cheerful fish and chips the other night, and having recently fallen out of love with my local up the road, we thought we'd give the Ocean Basket at Coachman's Crossing a try. Got there to find it wasn't open. Not sure if it has closed down but it was in darkness on a very busy evening. The only other place I could think of serving seafood in the area was Adega so off we went. We ordered prawn rissoles to start and a sole and prawn special for mains. After about 30 min we still hadn't received our starters. We finally caught sight of our waitress and was about to follow up on the starters when she walked over with our mains. When we asked about the starters she stared at us blankly so we told her to just take it off be bill. The main was edible but nothing to rave about. The prawns were tiny and a bit mushy. When the waitress took our plates away the table cloth had black rings on it from the underside of the plates. Had they not been cleaned properly??? By that stage we were over it so asked for the bill. After about 15 min we still hadn't received it so got up, paid at the counter and left. The most I saw the manageress/owner do all evening was stand and observe. Not once did she walk over to anyone's table and ask how their meal was. We spent a fair amount of time gazing around the restaurant looking for our waitress and not once did she notice. Average service and underwhelming food. Won't be returning.

One my favorite seafood restaurants that offers you value for money for shellfish. The establishment is excellently run with always outstanding service. I would rarely have to ever make a booking as management/owners will always accommodate myself and guests. This was particularly impressive last Christmas day, as it was the only restaurant opened in the Bryanston area. Thanks Team Adega.
My experience has always been an indulgence of 1kg Queen or King prawns in a mouth watering butter sauce and chili dip, while enjoying a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The serving is best accompanied with chips or rice while making your way through the shellfish on the warmer.
The commendable consistency always makes me feel satisfied on every occasion.

Always a great sea food spot with specials on for nearly every dya of the week. Since its revamp it really is a warm and friendly place with excellent service and guaranteed time and again quality sea food.

SO SAD, so sad indeed!! After being a loyal customer since Adega Bryanston's inception at the Bryanston Shopping Centre, watching waiters grow into managers, it was such a sad day yesterday when my husband decided he felt like Adega's famous prawns. Boy were we in for a shock - not only were the prawns tasteless but resembled the size of cockroaches. NO authentic Portuguese food, clearly a case of the wrong people now running a once favourite and successful restaurant! The variety reduced to wanting and amongst the sad dishes was spaghetti bolognese where one needed a microscope to find the mince meat, the once available authentic Portuguese dishes where nowhere to be found. Everything on the table was blatantly reduced to minimal product: the sushi was more rice than anything resembling sushi, bad quality chips not only cold but old oil which gave it it's ranchit taste - beyond disgusting!! A price increase of 30%, from R165 per head to R205 per head. The dessert table and the desserts on offer where always presented with the most tantalising garnishing of fruit in season, a master piece one wanted to photograph and not spoil by cutting into it - that too was so sad: the dessert dishes also so wanting, were accompanied with the smallest spoon which resulted in the creme caramel being broken, impossible to serve! SO SAD....how can you spoil the once famous authentic name, ADEGA Head office? After so many fond memories over the years with family and friends, we have to write Adega Bryanston off as such an unpleasant experience, food beyond acceptable levels, and a hefty price increase which we don't have a problem paying, BUT paying for the quality and authenticity Adega Bryanston once was - not an excuse of skimping on quality and taste and variety!! SO SAD and good bye Adega!
When this place first re-opened, we were quite impressed with it. Good ambience, clean, good service, and nice prawns. We thus made it our go-to place when we had a prawn craving. But after last night, we will never return. Nobody to meet us at the door. A table that wasn't properly set. No serviettes. Slow service. Waitress brought incorrect drinks. I sent a greasy finger-printed plate back and asked for a clean one. When the prawns finally arrived after about half an hour, the rice was gritty and undercooked, the chips fatty and like the dregs, the prawns mostly over-cooked, and the sauces were ICE cold. We sent them back to be heated up. All was edible but as we left we both said bye bye Bryanston Adega - we will never return. Sad that places show promise and then slide. Very sloppy and poor in all areas. I guess you get what you pay for. I would rather cough up more of my hard-earned money and go to Fishmonger in Nicolway. It's like night and day in comparison.

Visited our local restuarant again, service is excellent. Food was good, although I got the wrong order it was quickly rectified. Chicken curry was very tasty according to our son. Beer and wine were cold and good. All in all a good experience and we will return with Lisa Botha Gibbon.
Nadia
Sunday buffet at Adega is the best! They have everything from prawns, seafood, sushi! You can eat your heart out! It's also very reasonably priced for all you can eat! Would highly recommend this place!

Adega is close to home, and a good place to have dinner with family. They have a wide variety of dishes to choose from, which you can select from an awfully think menu. The service is generally good, and not much can be said about the ambience. However, I quite enjoy their food. I would recommend the prawn pasta, or the chicken and prawn combo. Can you tell, I'm a sucker for their prawns 😊. Their virgin cocktails are also really good, along with their chocolate mousse.

Friday 8 April 2016. Worst meal ever. Prawns Nacional consisted of 1 cup under-cooked rice with 7 tiny prawns: primarily heads, tails and shells in white wine sauce. Waiter literally threw the plate in front of me and I had to pour my own wine. We decided to have pudding and coffee at home. Will NEVER go back. Have tried this restaurant 6x as it is close to home. Meals usually disappointing but edible

We went to Adega for a celebratory dinner for my graduation. The restaurant was quiet, the service was good, the food came out shortly after we ordered.

I had the monk steak which was nothing to write home about but the mushroom sauce that came with it was delicious. Most of the patrons at the table seemed to enjoy their meals.
Binita Mistry
Adega Bryanston is my favourite Adega. The owners are always friendly and walking around to make sure customers are looked aftered. We had visitors from Zambia who wanted to have portuguese cuisine so we recommended Adega. We all ordered the special which consisted of 3 prawns, portuguese chicken and pangasius fish with a side of veggies - cream spinach and butternut. Adega has got to have the best chicken I've ever tasted. The chicken was tender, hot and delicious and the fish was cooked to perfection. This place never disappoints.

Absolutely fantastic service! Great little restaurant. We went on the latest Groupon and was not disappointed. The food was lovely, highly recommended.
Sashin Naidoo
Went there on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, the food was good but expensive, sea food menu could have been a lot more extensive as there wasn't that much to choose from. The only snag is that the food took long to arrive but overall experience was decent. The Chocolate Mousse dessert was way too sweet and way too rich, definitely wouldn't order that again.
Sonja Offwood
Large menu, but somehow the seafood choices are still limited. I had the seafood platter special, which was good and decently sized. Unfortunately there were two areas were the restaurant failed. 1. Despite being a quiet evening, we were placed right at the kitchen door, which should be one of the last tables to be occupied as it is quite distracting and busy. 2. Bring a seafood restaurant, you would expect the waiters to know the difference between fried and grilled calamari which did not seem the case.
Rob & Sian
2nd time we've ordered a sea food platter for 2 takeaway on a Friday night for dinner and been disappointed! The baby lobster was burnt and rubbery, calamari overcooked and fish had heaps of bones. Service was good but food was severely overpriced for what we got. Pity.
Razmataz
Very average seafood. Went for their Sunday buffet and was not impressed with the quality or choice. Good value but I would rather pay more for quality food
Mishka
Just a casual Wednesday night out for dinner in JHB. The restaurant was packed and bustling. We weren't extremely hungry so we decided to share a few platters- chicken with chips and veg, a seafood one with kinglip, prawns, mussels and calamari, and sushi. The seafood platter was absolutely delish! Everything was cooked perfectly, my fav was the calamari as it was tender yet crispy. Additionally the meals were well priced and they were big portions, enough for lunch the next day :)
Delcia Brown
This restaurant has never disappointed, I've been coming here for more than 10 years. Food portions are massive, service is great and on a Saturday they have live music which adds to the atmosphere. Try the Monk's Platter, Halloumi Cheese starter or grilled calamari. Pair it with a bottle of Van Loveren or Pongraçs to top it off. Enjoy!
Julia Louise Domanski
Went here for lunch today with a group of 10. Besides food arriving at different times the service was good. Our waitress was attentive and friendly.
I couldn't take photos of everyone's food but most of us were very impressed!
My stuffed calamari starter was very tasty. The tubes were tender.
Everyone enjoyed their sushi a lot.
My rump trinchado was absolutely delicious but I was shocked at the tiny portion for R145. It was more like a starter portion. Small amount of meat and lots of potatoes (which were lovely though).
My friend said her prawn curry was a bit too salty and not fantastic. Another friend enjoyed her calamari tubes and chips a lot and the salad another lady had looked fresh and full of ingredients other than lettuce which is a nice change from many restaurants.
Also, the fresh, warm bread rolls they serve at the beginning of the meal are to die for! I could eat a whole basket of them.
Cocktails were nice but not amazing.
I'd definitely come back for their seafood platter specials which sounded like great value for money.
Natalia Bonegio
Went here for the Monday oyster special, and special is the right word to describe it! The service was great, with a quick, polite waiter and friendly managerial staff. Our drinks arrived soon after we ordered them, and our oysters didn't take an unpleasantly long time to arrive, considering how many they had to open and bring.

These were the best oysters I've had in Joburg for a good while. They weren't small or disappointing. While not overly-large, they were decent-sized and incredibly fresh, with the perfect taste. I will definitely be going back!
David Blundell
Wide variety on the menu predominantly seafood but Adega has an excellent meat options too, the food overall is great food and well priced too. I found the service excellent too (Ben our waiter was brilliant) until next time!
Andreas Nicolari
I was present at Adega Bryanston for a New Years Eve dinner with my girlfriend. The food was absolutely horrendous. The three food stations were totally unmanned, there were no indications of what we were eating as well as a very untidy set up. The chicken and ribs were well overcooked and the beef roll/soup tasted like soap. I became ill after eating the food offered at this buffet. The service was also a let down - albeit New Year's Eve the staff should have been more accommodating. The bathrooms were also unacceptably dirty. I feel for a New Years meal this was a terrible choice and a waste of R350 pp. Although the ambience was nice, the food was abysmal. Very disappointing. I will definitely not be going back anytime soon.
Zoë Dorothy Brentano
Went here for Christmas Eve without a booking. We went early enough though and they were happy to accommodate us. Our waitress was extremely friendly and always on hand even though she was handling large tables. Buffet had good variety, value for money. Menu had lots of variety and choice in food and drink - some options I found a bit over priced. The Sally Williams dessert is a must try. I will probably go back mainly to try out their cocktails.
Jan
Went last for a family dinner, a bit disappointing as I've been here severe times before. Maybe with everyone trying to get their last minute Christmas dinners in they can't cope. It certainly seemed to me that extra tables had been put into the Resturant. Initially the service was a bit slow, but as the evening went on it got better. Cannot complain about the food, always very well cooked and tasty, probably some of the best sea food around at decent prices. My one complaint is that with adding more tables the Resturant was extremely loud and made for difficult conversation, and with all the candles on the tables and gas burners it became unbearably hot. Will I go back? Sure, but well away from any holiday season!
Yasmin
The more I go to this restaurant the better it gets. I've come here often and never disappointed at the service or the quality and taste of the food. No wonder it's always busy.
Pierre
Didn't start off too great - the first waiter, who showed us to our table is seen openly arguing with waitress who he thinks should serve us. Eventually she relents and comes to hand us menus. Oysters were average and kinda warm. Starter clams were miniscule, tasty but each +- the size of a 10c piece. Giblets were tasteless and oversalted at the same time. Codfish was also really bland. Cocktails were good, service ok. Disappointed for the price.
Lynzi Bee
I am always slightly let down by the food here. The menu is far too large and all over the place.
I am always skeptical in these cases that the food is going to be good if the menu is so big and confusing. When the food does eventually arrive (service is a tad slow) it really is an average meal. Not highly recommend.
Anisha Lutchman
For me, Adega is one of those restaurants that does not disappoint. This particular franchise is one of my favourites. I've been here twice before and both the food and service was excellent. This time I ordered the stuffed calamari starter. It came with crispy deep fried chips on the side, which added a lovely crunch to the dish. The dish as a whole was great but could have done with a little more seasoning. The restaurant was pretty full being a Friday night and despite this, the service was still fantastic!
Lisa Botha Gibbon
We had a lovely dinner here. Good food, good service, just a very pleasant vibe. I liked the tempura combos - hadn't see that before and had prawn tempura with a rainbow roll and sashimi. Michael had chicken curry and Brian had chicken and chips. No complaints, only happiness 😊😊
Amy Lara Baxter
Prawns and Chicken! Simply divine! This Adega was my first experience of Adega years ago!

The food is morish and worth some drool!

I have always had great experiences here and often invite people to join! A lovely place for dinner.
Graham
Adega Bryanston, was once a fine restaurant frequented by patrons who pride themselves on enjoying fine food and dining. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. The seafood special was dry and bland. The "Grilled baby sole" lacked texture and flavor, and for a while I thought I was eating a piece of leather reserved for a sandal. I was disappointed and would not recommend this place, unless desperation or load shedding prevails, limiting all options.
Johan Snyman
Great for prawns. Wine list is fine. Typically, the service is fine, but there have been an occasion or two where they have let themselves down. Great for prawns!
Talitha Alink
On a week day the kilo queen prawns are really good value and if you like to eat quite a bit the Sunday buffet is real quality and value for money.
Michelle Brink
Adega is a very well known Portuguese restaurant chain. I frequent this one because it's the closest to where I live. Food and service is always of a decent standard, and their prawn specials are incredibly reasonable. I do think sometimes location changes a person's opinion, as eating on a car park isn't always ideal, but nonetheless I have no real criticisms and highly recommend the seafood pasta.
Mmule
Great place to go during the week for dinner. I had the chicken and chips which was ok, the chicken was abit dry. My cousin had the seafood pasta which looked good. The service was great and the waiters were attentive!
Ilinda Du Preez
I still need to find an Adega that serves good food. Popped in for quick lunch. Service was adequate. Had black mushrooms with spinach. First bite I thought they had used a nice mature cheese. Then I realized the spinach was so sour it overpowered everything. Try to eat the mushrooms and that tasted like mature cheese. Followed by really bad coffee. Not a good meal at all.

Before I continue with the review I just wish to thank the proprietors for attempting to make our experience better.
Ended up here for lunch and tried keeping it light with an assorted sushi order while my colleague ordered a salad. The sushi/maki did not seem fresh at all including the salmon sashimi. In comparison to the sushi corner at Food Lovers Market at Nicolway Mall, a stark contrast. The order was changed and the new platter was also so - so. My colleagues salad however was good and filling. The post lunch cappuccino was also sent back as it was very watery.
The pastas and meats on menu looked better and that perhaps is more this restaurants forte?
Again, thanks to those running the establishment at this branch for their attempts, that was appreciated.
Owen Tennant
In a new location that has a good vibe for a Sunday lunch. Some music to add and an extensive menu. The sea food was tasty but was not in the special league, standard fare comes with lashings of sources. Did not try the steaks but believe also good value, certainly not in the fine dining league but still quite enjoyable with good service to add
Foodifancipants
Adega is a household name that people recognize for seafood. My experience was not anything special and the sushi was shocking! Their prawn specials are indeed value for money however the sauces served with the prawns taste like flour and are quite outdated. This restaurant is old school for the wrong reasons. I would far rather spend my time and money at other restaurants in Bryanston before returning to Adega.
Zoe Hawkins
Nice ambiance and excellent service, Adegas seems to be a natural choice for nice evenings out. My grilled calamari was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the prawn curry or the oxtail casserole - far too much salt. Portion sizes are adequate although for the prices I would expect them to be a bit more generous. Perfectly serviceable restaurant although not my new favorite.

I just love Adega ever since I first ventured to the one at the Wedge in 2007 and ordered the chicken and prawn combo. Ever since then I've never ordered anything other than the Portuguese Chicken, I swear by this chicken being the best I've had at any restaurant in Johannesburg. This evening my wife ordered a seafood Platter for one, the panga was cooked to perfection, I don't think I've had fish taste so good before.

Adega's Bryanston, in its original setting that I was accustomed to, has moved to Grosvenor Crossing in the last year and I popped in there for lunch last week. The decor has not changed very much from its typically Portuguese one but it was light and more open with I liked very much.

On the food side, I chose the grilled chicken livers, served with a Portuguese roll to start and then some sushi. My starter was lovely and the onions were a nice touch. Sadly, I found the sushi to be a little dry and disappointing for what I was paying. My friend, however, chose the Grilled Falklands Calamari grilled in lemon butter and spices and it was cooked to perfection!

Another interesting thing to note is that there is a mandatory service charge of 10% on each bill so it unfortunately does take the autonomy from our choice of the 'service' that we receive, but thankfully I have no complaints with our waitress. She was helpful and friendly!

I was invited for dinner by my friends at this Adega restaurant last week Thursday. My friend had made a table reservation, and when I arrived there, I was first to arrive among my party and the Manager showed me to an outside table. However, I had to move a short while later, as the customer right at the next table was merrily smoking away. The Manager was very accommodating and conducted me to another table that was slightly further inside the restaurant.

When my friends arrived, we ordered our drinks which were brought to us with efficiency by our waitron Nono. She was also very knowledgeable with the specials of the evening and also kindly advised us that due to the full house at the restaurant, the kitchen is going to be slow in delivering food. She suggested that we order our meals as soon as possible.

The 3 of us shared 2 starters, which were the Chicken Rissoles and the stuffed calamari. The rissoles were ordinary but the stuffed calamari were very good.

We eventually got round to ordering our mains and I went for the special of the evening which was a seafood platter for one. Despite the warning of a delayed delivery of our main courses, I felt that the timing that it took for our main courses to arrive at our table to be a reasonable time.

The seafood platter, consisted of 6 prawns, calamari tubes and a piece of Panga fish. The fish was succulent and well grilled. The tubes were also tasty. However, I felt that the prawns were under-seasoned when grilled and hence leaving a slightly bland taste.

This branch of Adega must be doing booming business as on a Thursday evening, it was fully booked with not a single empty table. I could see the Manager involved in the actual operations, carrying plates, serving food, chatting with customers, so it is kudos to them.

A definite winner here.

Nice ambiance, pleasant, friendly staff. Manager attentive. Good value for money.
Paella was delicious, high recommended though crabs should have been shelled.
Some interesting chicken and sushi specials on offer.
Good wines by the glass too.
With Adega's franchises all over the place, I decided to give the Bryanston branch a go. The norm for me is to always to go for the peri-peri chicken and prawns. The chicken although good was not great or mind blowing as my favorite Adegas situated in the south ☺. The prawns were simply awesome, great size and quality. Service was good and with the Restaurant situated in a little shopping center,Grosvenor Crossing, it's more vibey than the previous venue. If I'm in the area & looking for an Adega, I'll give it a go !

Very sad experience on Saturday at what is one of my favorite restaurants. A late afternoon bite was ruined by bad service, even though we were one of only 4 tables in the place.

We were then served incredibly tough Trinchado, followed by a stodgy prawn pasta and a platter for one about an inch deep in lemon butter. The fish dissolved on touch and wasn't tasty at all. When I asked for the fresh bread for my Trinchado, I was brought sliced brown bread with the crusts ripped off (well mostly) with finger marks pressed into the bread.

The usual manager/owner wasn't there and maybe this is what happens when someone with an interest in the business isn't around.

I really hope this was an isolated incident, as Adega is a favorite of mine.

I don't know why I haven't tried this restaurant before.
It's nice and open and parking is right there..so to speak.
I started with the caldo verde then had the prawn spare rib combo. My friend had the kilo of prawns.
I've had better caldo verde but my five prawns were excellent. The spare ribs were very good too. Nice and meaty. My friend raved about his prawns too.
The service was excellent.
Prices are reasonable.
Since writing this I have been back and was not impressed. Maybe it was one of their off days?
I'm downgrading the restaurant to 3/5.
The worst rude service Having waited for a plate of soup was told to leave when I enquired about the delay

Every time ive been to this Adega the service has been terrible! They are slow and have gotten my food order wrong. My food has also arrived cold before. It will take a lot for me to go back here for dinner.

We arrived at 21:00 for dinner on our way home from the airport and were quickly seated. The waiters were incredibly friendly and our drinks arrived speedily. Trying to be healthy I ordered the calamari steak with veg on the side. The calamari was cooked superbly, however the steamed veg was bland (not seasoned at all) and the butternut and spinach was just too sweet like they added too much sugar to everything. My partner had the T-bone and prawn special that he thoroughly enjoyed. Overall it was nice for a quick dinner and the service was great. I’ll go back again but maybe I’ll just order rice or chips as a side next time as a safer bet.

I can't eat seafood but my girlfriend loves their prawns. And it's very well priced too. Service is good, and both wine list and menu are middle of the road. He steaks are not the greatest but for the price it's ok. The new venue is much better then the old place. This deserves a 3 for the general quality, ambience and service. But, given the lady's love for the prawns, it gets a 3.5 from me.

Went for dinner here a week ago to try their KG of queen prawns. Yummy! We tried a little bit of everything. Mussels and oysters for starters were great. We were unfortunate to have one off oyster but the others were great. Then for mains we had the prawns and grilled calamari. So amazing! Vegetables and salad were disappointing but luckily there was enough seafood to keep us happy. Thulani was our brilliant waiter, very attentive and friendly!

Love Adegas! Never had a bad meal here! Seafood is fantastic especially the platter for 2! When I get a craving for seafood, I hit Adegas! Just do it!

Just had an awesome dinner, good service and great atmosphere. The magazine type menu layout is distracting- but that's just personal! Otherwise a great night out.

If you are looking for an uncomplicated quick easy lunch the specials are great, but if you are looking for a more sophisticated meal order off the main menu.

Unfortunately it is a bit of hit and miss at Adega, I was there 3 weeks ago with my wife and had a great experience, however on Friday night it was a different story.

Having said this the King prawns by the kilo were fantastic, Unfortunately the service was dismal, If I had known how long I was going to wait for wine I would have brought my own screw cap bottle and paid the corkage so I could pour it myself.
The plates were cold, the prawns arrived without sauces, that then once requested took quite some time to arrive. The garlic sauce tasted like melted butter with garlic chunks that had not been sautéed.

When it was time to leave it took more than 20 mins to get the bill.
If you are a very patient person the prawns are worth it.

Had a lazy Saturday lunch at the relocated Adega ... Most enjoyable. Seafood platter was excellent, very fresh, nice bluesie jazzy music live, added to atmosphere. No license yet so bring your own keeps the costs down.

Always have great chicken and prawns at adega, service can vary from time to time the new location however is not the same as when it was located in the bryanston shopping centre was just more easy to pop in foe a quick bite and the view is gone but food remains great.
