Review Myoga - Newlands

warren winchester
Nestled in a spectacular setting amongst the trees and along the river. Arrive early to walk in gardens. You are greeted by friendly faces all round. Ordered the tasting, whereby you can order a meal from each of the elements and you will not be disappointed. Food is amazing, a treat for your taste buds. Great range of cocktails including some in house developed combinations. Wine is list really impressive as well.

But In-fact is was AWFUL!!!.....Today: 15th November 2016: Celebrating our 41st Wedding Anniversary with a 7 Course Exquisite Fine Dine Which Turned out be an Insidiously Enjoyable Occasion...Food was Awesome Awesome Awesome. ... And as Always Most Artistically Presented & Controversial! cause of the Ingredients used in some of the Dishes! And they Made a Special Anniversary Plate with Deserts for Us! Absolutely love this restaurant. The food, the ambience, the service, (i can go on and on) is just simply outstanding. Still dreaming about the food i had last night. Highly recommend Myoga.

Beautifully presented dishes. Enjoyed my three course dinner. The gnocchi was outstanding.

Great food and great experience. Tasting menu so worth it. Try the candy floss mojito.

Fabulous food and excellent service. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing and it really was a treat. Definitely need Uber after that.

Super nice place with excellent staff. Tried the seven course menu with wine pairing. Had a great time with our big family group.

The menu is always so refreshing, with so many flavors incorporated into each dish. How they keep changing things yet still maintain their top standard is amazing. The Beef Tender Cut is one of the best meals I have ever had. And I experienced superb service from Anel & Adrian. I'm super impressed!!!

Just outstanding! Myoga is my wife’s happy place as it has countless great memories for us. It’s not cheap so it’s special occasions only but it is sooo good. <br/><br/>Local knowledge is to go while the winter special is running... less courses on offer yes, but also significantly more affordable. I did the wine-paired 6 course offering (add the amazing bread platter and call it seven) for R650 which I thought worth it. My wife had a cocktail instead of the wine along with her courses and the food was R495. The summer menu is 11 wine paired courses and targeted at the foreign hotel visitors for R1300 I think they said. That for me is too much.

The food was incredible and the service was friendly and knowledgeable <br/><br/>I haven’t have so many amazing flavors in one meal in a long time ... and don’t get me started on the bread ... WOW<br/><br/>Can’t wait to go back

We have been to Myoga a few times for special occasions and always appreciate the efforts of the staff to ensure we are happy and have a good time. Our recent 10 year anniversary was a lot of fun - thanks Myoga team! The food was creative and plentiful. We enjoyed choosing our way through the tasting menu. Our memory skills were exercised :) <br/><br/>The wine pairing was delicious. Some very good selections

Had a fantastic birthday dinner for my wife last night. Our waiter Ruben was brilliant and the food unforgettable. The six course taster is quite a bit of food so doing the a la carte maybe the wiser option. All in all a great at experience. Well done Myoga 👏🏻

Loved every bite and enjoyed the view of the mountain while we were waiting. Service was great 👍🏻 Definitely go in for lunch and definitely try out their three course winter special ☺️❤️

It was a cold winters day, but I just had to venture out and give Myoga’s restaurant week menu a try. <br/><br/>Warmly greeted by the staff, I was placed at a very lovely table next to the window with a view of the garden and Devil’s Peak as the backdrop. <br/><br/>Complimentary bread consisting of a slice of their freshly baked ciabatta with umami butter was served soon after my drinks order was taken. That butter was out of this world! <br/><br/>Then came an amuse bouche, a chickpea fritter served on a bed of thyme. Very lovely, but big enough to be a starter by itself. <br/><br/>Next was my duck liver starter. Wow! Hands down the best rendition of a duck liver parfait I’ve ever had! <br/><br/>Next was my main: beef shin with ox tongue. This dish was a bit too salty for my liking and a bit too small for a main course. It was definitely missing a starchy veg. <br/><br/>Last up was this velvety rich choc dessert. Probably double the portion size of a normal dessert offering in a 4 course set. And way too rich for me. Safe to say I couldn’t finish it. <br/><br/>Then before your bill arrives, you’re served 3 petite fours. The choux bun was the tastiest, the rest a bit dry. Also 2 desserts in a row is tad much..<br/><br/>Service was great, when they were at my table to place my course down or clear my dishes. But not very attentive. I had to refill my water glass from the start of lunch till the very end. <br/><br/>Portion sizing is very off. I’m not sure if it’s just this set menu. And the main was a bit of a let down. But everything else was really very good. This was definitely more than a 3 score but just shy of a 4. I’d like to return to try their normal menu offerings.

I've been to this lovely hideaway twice in the past year and I've been pleased both times with the food, presentation, service, and general ambience. Great care was taken each time to ensure the menu was different and unusual - you certainly don't feel bored! The waiters are very knowledgeable when it comes to the food along with wine recommendations. Their water-scarce menu was a great change.

An AMAZING experience overall! The food, the service and the atmosphere at Myoga is out of this world! They offer a 5 course menu at a great price of R395.00 pp. This is highly recommended and such an experience. Should you not want the 5 course meal you can order any meal off the menu separately, this is what I did. I had the Sea bass and I literally wanted to lick my plate clean. I’ll definitely be going back!

The entire experience was more of a journey than a night out for dinner. The food was absolutely incredible and the atmosphere was great. The service could not have been better. The cocktails a surprisingly well priced and the food is absolutely worth it’s price. The creativity and technique that is put in to executing a meal like that is astounding. Highly recommend the tasting menu.

Setting / ambiance: sophisticated. I love the decor and the fact that the kitchen is the center showpiece in the resturant. <br/><br/>Service: I wouldn't say our waitress was the nicest, but our food did come quickly. <br/><br/>Food: the plating was beautiful and each and every dish looked amazing, but not all of them followed through on the taste. I was disappointed by some of the dishes - some looked a lot better than what they tasted. <br/><br/>Pricing: I think their prices are reasonable for a seven course meal, I just wish I had enjoyed the food a bit more so that it would have felt more worth it. <br/><br/>Overall: it still doesn't come close to my favourite fine-dining resturant, but I'm glad I gave them a try. I wouldn't go again, to be honest.

Loved going here for dinner. Hidden in the garden this restaurant is very cosy and has the perfect decor. The waiters were very friendly and took the time to explain the different menus. <br/><br/> The food is top class, just very small portions. There aren't many options for mains. I had the duck followed by chocolate parfait for dessert. <br/><br/>I would like to go during the day and just take all the nature in.

What’s a way to spend a Saturday, it’s sunny and hot and there’s just the slightest breeze. Myoga is lush and green and can be found in Newlands at the Vineyard Hotel. You would never say you were in sprawling suburbia while sitting on the patio overlooking a dramatic backdrop of treetops and mountains.<br/><br/>The lunch menu really does leave one spoilt for choice, as there were 9 starter courses to choose from with prices ranging from R95-R195. But before I get into that, we were served the amouse-bouche or tickler which consisted of butternut and onion marmalade topped with a Catalan or Spanish custard made of pumpkin ginger and gruyere cheese topped with mushroom shortbread and elderflower…delicious!<br/><br/>For the starter course, there was:<br/><br/>• Ceviche which consisted of farmed Red Drum Sea Bass (shipped from Mauritius), Soy Kombu, Wasabi Tobiko, Tigers milk ice cream and pickled jalapeno which was fantastic.<br/><br/>• Then there was the Scotch egg, which was a combination of pork and prawn meat, pickles, potted shrimp and roasted tomato vinaigrette. I found the prawn and pork a little weird, but it was tasty.<br/><br/>• Next was the Temple Bowl which consisted of freekeh, Ponzi beetroot, tempeh, roasted mushrooms, raw mushrooms and nasturtium top pesto with edamame dressing. Apparently freekeh is the new supergrain, which is highly nutritious a bit like Bulgar wheat.<br/><br/>• Lastly there was Gyoza, which consisted of prawn and chicken, myoga xo sauce, apple celery and kohlrabi.<br/><br/>Before we got stuck into our main courses, there was the palate cleanser which consisted of Buchu lemonade with warm chai jelly.<br/><br/>For the main course our party chose:<br/><br/>• Linefish with local sea vegetables, stuffed courgette flower and sauce au vin blanc which is really just adding a white wine reduction to a hollandaise sauce, which was superb I might add.<br/><br/>• Then there was the duck (three ways) which consisted of Roasted duck breast, Confit leg croquettes, liver crème caramel, rhubarb, puffed grains with a gizzard and hibiscus jus. This course got a mixed review as there were some very good elements; the liver crème caramel wasn’t a firm favourite.<br/><br/>• The beef tender cut was superb, slow cooked chuck with charred aubergine, roasted onion and sauce charcuterie. I’ve had beef fillet a few times recently and this course really gave a good account of itself, cooked to perfection.<br/><br/>• Ostrich fillet which was grilled with dates, baharat spice glazed carrot, pickled rose, brik pastry and ostrich neck jus.<br/><br/>For Pre-dessert, a course soon to be a staple at my house, a lemon and orange Catalan (Spanish custard) with lemon marshmallow , orange preserve, vanilla shortbread and burnt sugar typical of crème brulee. I adore all things custard, so there was no need to convince me…excellent!<br/><br/>For Dessert, there was…<br/><br/>• Chocolate parfait with Valrhona chocolate, choc chip cookie, fizzy blueberry, burnt chocolate, dried blueberry, chocolate fondant and blueberry pastille which was amazing, this course was definitely for the chocolate lovers. <br/><br/>• Then there was the Strawberry Neat Mess with Mascarpone cheesecake, strawberry elastic, compressed strawberry, meringue, shortbread, strawberry sorbet with pectin jellies.<br/><br/>• Lastly there was the Creamy Sago Pudding with passion fruit curd, passion fruit sorbet, grilled litchi, coconut crumble and dehydrated coconut. Not quite in the traditional mould, but I quite enjoyed it. The purists in our group disagreed with me, but I thought it was a good take on a classic South African dessert.<br/><br/>Overall a really enjoyable afternoon and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful summer’s day. The venue is perfect and the food was really good.

Best experience ever! Celebrated my birthday at the Vineyard Hotel with dinner at the stunning Myoga restaurant. It was everything and more! Super stylish, elegant, friendly staff and an incredible menu that will surely make selecting a dish difficult. I was really impressed with the wine selection as well, I can not recommend this restaurant enough! We tried the hoisin white fish paired with a bottle of chenin blanc. For dessert we were treated with a selection of macaroons.

Flawless. Every course was exquisite. Stand-outs: The warm garlic butter and chive oil that accompanied the scallop starter, the beef fillet main, and the heady chocolate fondant component of the chocolate dessert. 👌🏽💯⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been to Myoga many times. I went again to try their new menu launched in October 2017. I tried their 5 course tasting menu which consisted of: something unique from the kitchen, starter, palate cleanser, main and dessert. The first course (the something unique from the kitchen) was strange in my opinion - it was a sort of ginger based custard with biscuit crumbs and edible flowers. As a starter, I had the prawn and chicken gyoza (Japanese pan fried dumpling) which was absolutely amazing! For my main, I had the sustainable fish. This was also absolutely amazing, the fish was crispy on one side and soft on the other and the sauce au vin blanc was stunning! The palate cleanser tasted like plain gelatine and was served in a colourless liquid. The dessert was good (I had the chocolate dessert), but not great and not up to the standard of the starter and main. The other person dining with me got the incorrect main order which had to be sent back to the kitchen, this was quickly rectified and the correct dish (beef tender cut) was served in no time - the sauce and vegetables on the plate were lovely, but the actual beef cut was fatty, chewy and disappointing.<br/>I must say that the service was absolutely superb. The barmen was also wonderful. He made fantastic cocktails and was very friendly. He even came to our table to suggest items on the drinks menu.<br/>Overall, Myoga was a lovely experience, but I have to give it 4 stars due to the disappointing dessert and beef tender cut.

I love the food and the service is great. This is one of our favourites. We always have the tasting menu for a fantastic experience. Definitely somewhere to go for a special occasion. <br/>

A fantastic fine dining experience. The food is delicious and creative. The tasting menu is comparatively affordable and a real treat and quite filling. Located in a very beautiful setting. The restaurant decor is sophisticated and the service is excellent. They have a full winelist but also make wonderful cocktails.

Food: I went for the winter special - 5 course tasting menu for R350. It was an exceptional fine dining experience. The portions weren't massive but what they lacked in size they made up with sophistication.<br/><br/>Service: The service was really on point. The wait staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. <br/><br/>Atmosphere: As you would expect from a place like this. Turned down opera in the background with an elegant feel about the restaurant.<br/><br/>Overall one of the top dining experiences I've had. <br/><br/>

Visited this beautiful restaurant with my best friend in order to try it out for her 21st Birthday. The setting is beautiful and I loved being able to see the kitchen <br/><br/>Starters (not pictured) - Smoked Confit Duck Terrine (I don't like duck but I loved this dish) & Local Air Dried Ham (a bit too salty but great) <br/><br/>Main - Tamil Kingklip (divine) & Chimicurri Beef (our favourite) <br/><br/>Palette cleanser was so creative and refreshing - Mango coconut egg <br/><br/>Dessert - "South Africa" (too citrusy for my tastes) & "Magical Fruit & Xocoatl" (yuuuum!)<br/><br/>Great service! <br/><br/>We booked the place and returned a month later. One of their Kitchen staff (Taz) also baked my friend the most beautiful and delicious cake!

I was taken out for lunch here and treated to the five course lunch special. Meals were well-prepared and excellently plated. They arrived in good time, too.<br/><br/>Variety was a bit lacking for vegetarians. Someone at the table was also allergic to nuts, and so didn't get any dessert. It was quite sad that they didn't even offer anything else to compensate for that. The menu was quite exotic otherwise. The five course meal included two 'surprises', which were neat palate cleansers. (The rosemary infused table bread was also a highlight).<br/><br/>All meals were all as tasty as they looked. The restaurant misses out on a 5 from me because of the lacking vegetarian options, and the peanuts issue.

Beautiful setting Elegant decor<br/>Starters were black salted squid Scallops<br/>Mains Duck breast Ginger lamb<br/>Everything was a taste sensation Presentation immaculate <br/>Wine is very expensive Over-the-top I would venture to suggest. Beware !<br/>Service was professional and unobtrusive <br/>Special occasion venue

Great service. Amazing food. The surprise dish is always well paired, with the beginning and end contrasting in flavor but matching in presentation. Great wine on offer. Overall a very well priced restaurant. Certainly one of my favorite restaurants in Cape Town.

Excellent service and amazing food. We went during restaurant week and enjoyed a fully satisfying evening of well timed and perfectly cooked meals all with unique flavors and creative design. It was a tremendous treat and we look forward to eating there again.

Having been to Myoga a handful of times, and these being generally pleasant experiences (especially the 7 course tasting menu) my last visit was extremely disappointing. <br/>I can best describe my starter as squishy (fishy, mushy, squid ink spaghetti). This was followed by the Vietnamese aromatic lamb - a dish so sweet that it could have featured on the desert menu. There was a positive, the Arancini balls were very tasty but just not enough for me to leave thinking that that was 420zars well spent!!!

I came here with a friend of mine for what was supposed to be a farewell dinner. We had gone there expecting to get a tour of the cellar but were told upon arrival that that's cancelled - that and one or two issues I had with some of the service received took away from my experience. HOWEVER, our waiter was amazingly attentive and friendly. He knew the menu well and all of his suggestions turned out great. We had the the 7 course tasting menu with a wine pairing and the meals were so delicious that the wines were pretty much neglected with every meal - the pairings were top notch as well - kudos to the chef and sommelier.

Thank you Myoga for an unforgettable dining experience. We had the 5-course menu and it was flawlessly brilliant. Such clever, unique ideas that were beautiful to look at and tasted like heaven.<br/>You can tell that these dishes are prepared with the utmost care and attention to the smallest detail.<br/>The venue is elegant and the service super professional. It all made for a very special anniversary evening.

Lunch was wonderful at this picturesque restaurant at the vineyard hotel! The setting is beautiful with views looking into a plush garden and the decor is simplistic and elegant. <br/>The service was quick and the staff were friendly and the manager was very hospitable. <br/>We had the kingklip, beef and duck. All three dishes were a success and each element on the plate was beautifully prepared and made for a tasty amalgamation of flavors. <br/>Definitely suggest this spot for a lunch date.

Another of my favorites in Cape Town. Conveniently located a few blocks from our flat . It made a cosy venue during the recent cold weather..<br/>Unfortunately the incorrect menu was printed so a few items were not available. This is rather disappointing but we were quickly consoled by the food we ordered.<br/>Service was not great this time round. Good wine selection. Delicious arancini balls , tender duck breast were savored. The kingklip with a Thai green curry sauce was excellent.<br/> The wine complimented the meal.<br/><br/>

Was totally heart broken. Both last year and this year we booked a table for my boyfriends birthday and ordered the tasting menu. Last year the food was fantastic, it seemed as if every element of the dish had been carefully placed on the plate using a set of tweezers. However this year it was clunky and messy and no where near the same quality we experienced exactly 1 year ago. I spoke to a friend who visits every year on valentines day to do the same tasting menu and his experience was exactly the same. For a R2200 bill for 2 people I expected more.... on the upside service is impeccable and a gent name Ricardo that works here made our night and made if feel somewhat more worth it.

Visited Myoga for an anniversary dinner. The food was great (all 8 courses)! The setting is beautiful and very romantic at night. The staff was friendly and gave us a special anniversary treat. I'd definitely recommend Myoga for any special occasion.

Creative combinations to tickle to the tastebuds! My favourite was the scallops with spicy tomato salsa! The chocolate aeration had a whimsical carnival theme with its blue isomalt shards, popcorn and milky chocolate 😍 yet, it held that quality of trying too hard... But entertaining with its complimentary treats that even included an apperol spritz with the wine pairings!

What an exceptional experience at this stunning restaurant. <br/><br/>We had the 7 course tasting menu which consisted of a lot of delicious and interesting flavours.<br/><br/>The service was brilliant.<br/><br/>I chose the snoek cheesecake starter - it was good but a little heavy and knowing I had 6 courses to go was a little daunting.<br/><br/>Went with the many mushrooms next, the flavours were good and they weren't kidding with the promise of many mushrooms. Went for the vanilla butter lobster next - it was good; really loved the crispy strips of potato. Next up was the 'event' course - I opted for the fish which I felt was a little too overpowering for my taste.<br/><br/>Ended with the snowman - so refreshing and the perfect end to a meal- however we were surprised with another course of dessert - quite good as well.<br/><br/>The mocktails are delicious. Overall I had one of the best evenings at Myoga, it's great value for money a the tasting menu is R450 pp ( there's a little surcharge on some options on the menu) but it's still highly worth it.<br/><br/>Hope to visit again soon.

Had the lunch tasting menu at myoga last week. Delicious surprise from the kitchen was the 1st course - oats/ risotto / onion/ cheese concoction. Next we had the lobster, which had a very interesting and quite exciting presentation, if only the dish had a little more lobster!! But nevertheless, it was quite delicious. Next we had a palate cleanser, followed by the line fish main. This main has the potential to be out of this world. The broth was DELICIOUS!!! but the fish was overcooked which really spoilt the dish. Desert was the snowman. Yummy. But my poor partner's snowman didn't have much lemon curd... And I wasn't sharing. As very regular customers to myoga, i'd recommend going for the dinner tasting menu. I have never had a bad experience with the dinner... But this is the 2nd mediocre experience I've had with lunch. Their restaurant week menu was a knockout, so lunch was a bit of a let down following that. But myoga is 1 of the restaurants I will give an endless number of chances... Cos when they're good, they're very good... And their "bad" is not really bad at all.. 😀

This review should be a 3.75 as it is neither a 3.5 nor a 4. This is also the most complex review to write as the various elements comprising the experience varied greatly. Everything - from the service, to the decor and the food - contained a combination of absolute highlight and the sense that Myoga was just trying too hard. We tried their tasting menu and it is definitely great value for money. The food - although varying from amazing to weird - is impeccably presented and extremely bold in flavour and composition, something that I enjoyed far more than my girlfriend. The dishes are all quite complex - it's the first time I have been unsure of myself when ordering. The presentation (generally their strongest suit) of their desserts, in particular, is unlike anything I've ever experienced. I would recommend trying Myoga, but requesting seating away from the kitchen - as it is very busy! - and arriving early as they serve a lot of food.

An acquaintance of ours recommended Myoga to us. After reading a few of their reviews and looking at their exceptional rating we were sold. My boyfriend and i have made it our hobby to visit as many of the top restaurants that South Africa has to offer as we possibly can. We're doing well in our quest and have had the pleasure of visiting many exceptional restaurants and consider ourselves well versed in the art of fine dining. Maybe we chose to go on a bad night, I'm not sure. I had the distinct feeling the chef has aspirations to be one of the top dogs but is not even remotely close. I think too many Masterchef episodes have contributed to meals that are unique and interesting, but lack in so many ways. The food was average at best. The service was exceptional. The price wasn't worth it. We had the tasting menu, the only dish we loved was the snoek cheesecake in the end.

We had a surprise birthday dinner for my sister here last week and the Myoga team were so great! They went all in for the surprise and were so accommodating. The food was amazing! I had the duck, which is definitely their signature dish for a reason (it's so good). Myoga is the perfect dinner spot, but booking in advance is a must.
The Foodie Corner
Wow! What an amazing dining experience and definitely value for money! <br/><br/>We were treated to a delicious seven course tasting menu on our visit to the Vineyard Hotel for our anniversary. I had booked the table beforehand, telling them that we were celebrating our anniversary and wanted a special, private, romantic table. And indeed, on the night they delivered with a lovely table set in the arch of the window, private and out of the way. Heavy, cozy chairs and a modern Asian fusion look makes this restaurant a perfect venue for enjoying a feast fit for royalty!<br/><br/>Our waitress explained the menu and made her recommendations. We were given a few minutes to decide what we wanted, while they brought us a trio complimentary bread. Quite healthy actually, since one type was a beetroot bread and the one butter was a vegan butter. The butter was unsalted, and when you combined it with the loose salt they give you, you ended up with a delicious combination, spiced to your own preference. <br/><br/>We placed our orders, deciding to give the wine pairing a skip and opt for a glass of Paul Cluver riesling each instead. The "surprise tickler" actually consisted of 2 amuse bouche from the kitchen. Both were vegetarian dishes - the first being a type of foam, combined with a butternut sauce, and the other being an authentic take on traditional "pap". I absolutely loved them both! So creative and lovely flavors to match!<br/><br/>For our first starter, we chose the snoek cheesecake and the eland. Both were served on a plate with dry ice underneath, producing an impressive smoke as the plates were placed before us. The snoek was amazing and I was really starting to wonder if the chef was some sort of culinary magician. The eland was also great, having lovely textures in it and tasting delicious.<br/><br/>Next, we had our "meat" course, which was Jamaican jerk petit poussin and pork belly. The baby chicken was quite average and I was a bit disappointed. The broth it came in was delicious, but the chicken itself was quite tasteless. However, the pork belly was the out of this work, ultimately being declared the dish of the night by my better half. Crispy outside, soft tender inside... perfection on a plate! <br/><br/>Next was our "surf 'n turf" course. My better half doesn't eat seafood, so they happily allowed him to substitute his dish for this course for one from the previous course. I tried the scallops - a nice combination of flavors, but I came to realize that I really do prefer my scallops to be cooked. They were served raw - my first thought was sushi, but I didn't like it. The textures on the plate were great - I loved the chili biscuit combined with the soft scallops and juicy sauces. I wasn't sure what to do with the chicken consommé - it was served in a little bowl on the side with a small spoon. I treated it as a sort of sauce, but I don't think it really added anything to the dish. Or I just used too little of it!<br/><br/>One thing that I must commend this restaurant on is their attentiveness. It was a busy Friday night, with all the tables being occupied. I didn't finish the last dish because I knew more courses were coming and my stomach was busy getting a food baby. So our waiter took a bit longer bringing out our food, which was great because it gave us some time to let the food digest and just enjoy each other's company. Our mains of kingklip and angus beef arrived. And wow, for me that fish was a show stopper! My favorite dish of the night! There simply aren't works for the feeling you get, where the food tastes so good, it gives you goosebumps. Yum, yum, yum! And the beef also got a good review, second only to the pork belly.<br/><br/>For dessert, we had the death by strawberry shortcake and the peanut butter and jelly. The PB & J was good, but not out of this world. I enjoyed it, but would've liked a bit more peanut butter goodness and a little less crunchiness from all the cookies in between. The strawberry dessert was delicious, and beautifully presented! If you're a strawberry lover, this one is for you. Go find out for yourself why they call it "death by strawberry shortcake" 😉<br/><br/>We were about to leave (realizing that it was past 10 and we'd been sitting there for almost 4 hours!), when our waitress arrived with a beautiful round wooden board, with a complimentary dessert and "Happy Anniversary" written in condense milk at the top. A small, light dessert to end off a perfect evening!<br/><br/>We left feeling full, but not stuffed. We were definitely treated to the best of the best! And I'd return in a heartbeat! Thank you to the entire Myoga team for making our night special! You'll see us again soon!

I’ve been wanting to visit Myoga Restaurant for a while. I’ve only heard great things about it and its flavourful and highly unique culinary creations. An invite to try this famous spot came while I was overseas, but I had to postpone the review until my return to Cape Town. And now that I’m back I could finally visit the spot to see what all the fuss was about!

For restaurant week my friends and I decided to put on our fancy outfits and try out a high-class restaurant. We usually wouldn’t be able to afford Myoga’s tasting menu so it was a special opportunity. All-in-all it was such a great dining experience from the décor, to service and food. <br/>Upon arrival our waiter gave us an extensive explanation of the menu after which we made our choices. A sommelier came to our table to take our drinks order and he didn’t agree with the wine we choose combined with our food choices. He gave us a small wine tasting with a selection of four bottles. It was so unexpected and fun to taste, learn and discuss with our group. <br/><br/>Moving on to the food which consisted of a whopping 7 courses! First a surprise from the chef a savoury taster with sweet potato, secondly an appetizer; I chose eland carpaccio which was presented beautifully with dry-ice condensation coming out of the plate, third was Japanese inspired course; cooled tuna miso – this was probably my fav (my friend had the pork belly which was out of this world!), fourth was a small pallet cleanser of lemon sorbet, fifth was the main event; I chose beef with different types of pepper sauce which combined beautifully and cooked perfectly med-rare, sixth was the dessert – all so beautifully presented, please see photos (a snowman!) and finally a parting gift from the chef which was a white chocolate taster which looked very similar to the first dish – this created the feeling of a full circle. Don’t go to Myoga for a quick bite, let them take you on a journey through flavours and just sit back and enjoy the ride. Your taste buds will be tickled to the fullest! <br/>If you ever have something special to celebrate such as an anniversary or an important birthday you should definitely consider Myoga.

Amazing experience here on Monday night! Visited for restaurant week, also it was my boyfriend's birthday! We both loved it.. it wasn't quite the time to take pictures of each meal as we really wanted to just enjoy the experience and each other so no pics unfortunately but I almost don't want to spoil the surprise and I'd love for everyone to just go and try it out. Every course was delicious. The look and feel of this place is amazing, perfect for a date or dinner with friends for a celebration. Also, we had amazing service from Daniel, our waiter who really did a great job of taking us through this wonderful experience :) he made great recommendations! highlights: the snoek cheesecake, and the chilled miso tuna! So yum. It took about 3 and a half hours so I wouldn't recommend going late as then you get tired towards the end and don't enjoy it as much. <br/><br/>Only one thing wrong, when I made my booking a few weeks ago, I asked that they would do a 'happy birthday' dessert, then when they called me Monday afternoon to confirm booking I asked about it again and they said that it would be done for him, and then on the night that didn't happen :( <br/><br/>But otherwise it was really an excellent experience. I would recommend doing the tasting menu to get the best of what this place has to offer. <br/><br/>Also, if you are going for dinner I would recommend going a little bit earlier to take a walk through the vineyard hotel's beautiful garden!!

Visited Myoga last night with my husband, we were welcomed and seated within seconds of arriving at a romantic table in die corner of the restaurant. Our waiter, Jody, was amazing throughout the meal, explaining everything to us as the dishes arrived and also recommended dishes for every part of the 7 course tasting menu (we ate almost all of the recommended dishes and they were incredible!). Overall the food was really great, beautifully presented and the portions were more than what you expect when you go with a tasting menu. We had a awesome evening and left incredibly satisfied. Favorite dishes: the suprise dishes from the kitchen, the duck main and chocolate desert!

This place used to be outstanding and mind blowing.<br/>Unfortunately I have to say it's lost it's steam and does not reach the heights it used to.<br/>We ordered food that was salty and poorly cooked.<br/>Cerviche that tasted of onions and was really not acceptable.<br/>The service was outstanding and the manager was very good but the quality of food has taken 5 steps backwards and is really unacceptable in the world of fine dining.

We went for a celebratory dinner and it was absolutely amazing. The tasting menu is fantastic and I would definitely recommend pairing it with their wines. The service is great and really adds to the entire evening. On top of all this the price is reasonable when you compare to other fine dining experiences.

This is one of my favourite tasting menus! There are great choices for every course and we always leave full and happy. With so much choice it's also great that you and your partner can have different dishes and compare or share.<br/><br/>The bread to start with was fab. The next 2 courses were surprises and we loved them. The courses we then chose were all great, perfectly presented , full of flavour and well prepared.<br/><br/>The service was great, even with the resturant fully booked.<br/><br/>It's a long evening, don't rush it. Really a top experience

It has been a while since I last visited Myoga for their tasting menu. So it seemed like a good idea to revisit it for a winter date night. <br/><br/>On arrival we were warmly welcomed and seated. Shortly afterwards the water came to explain the menu and give us a few recommendations. We were served some MCC and given a few minutes to decide what dishes we were going to choose as you had to place your entire order together.<br/><br/>We went with the wine paired menu which was around R670 per person. (Less than a quarter the price of The Test Kitchen) and well worth every cent!<br/><br/>I would love to go through every dish served, but this review would be the length of a novel, so I will summarize the entire experience.<br/><br/>The food was amazing, every dish, every mouthful. I have never had a wine pairing as spot on as this one, my taste buds were taken for a roller coaster ride. I think it should be mentioned that although they call it a 7 coarse menu, we were served 9. <br/><br/>There was one dish which needs to be corrected or removed from the menu, that was the langoustine. It was a let down and spoilt the close to perfect night. If it was not for this dish I would have score them a 5/5. The langoustine was the size of a large prawn and definitely not acceptable by any standard, especially considering they charge an extra R65.<br/><br/>One other negative criticism was the fact that they rush through the first 4 courses, so much that I asked them to slow down as we couldn't keep up. Understanding that with every meal you have a glass of wine! Oh and on that note, make sure to Uber as you will be served 7-9 glasses of wine 😁<br/><br/>But all of that said, it was a great night with friendly service and fantastic food and wine. I will definitely be going back for the summer menu and I suggest you go too!<br/><br/>Enjoy! <br/><br/>😜<br/>Carly Pols

Brilliant. Their wine pairing dining offering is divine. The layout and atmosphere is beautiful. This is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a celebration - really enjoyed it.

Exquisite dining with superb service in one of the finest restaurants in Cape Town. The food and wine pairing was a special dining experience.

Myoga reception is grand. Lovely food brought by friendly and considerate staff. The seven course tasting menu is a treat so definitely try it out if you are in Cape Town. Desert is a killer!

It’s been a few years since we last visited Myogo but after reading several other bloggers mention their delicious experiences there recently, we sure didn’t want to suffer from FOMO and booked a table!. Award-winning chef Mike Basset’s venture, Myoga, is a 100-seater restaurant located at the luxurious Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, Cape Town. Myoga, meaning Ginger Blossom in Japanese, incorporates an innovative new-age vivacity with the tranquility of Myoga’s spectacular position within the Vineyard Hotel’s lush, 6-acre garden.

Out of this world experience! Went on Valentine's Day so it was long ago BUT the courses kept coming - I think we ended up getting 4 more than we should have! The first and last course looked exactly exactly the same but the first was savory and the last was sweet - such a sensory overload and so clever! Loved everything about it & rolled out of there! A must! Bon a petit!
Simone Naicker
Had an amazing experience, i definitely suggest the 7 course pairing menu. Service was excellent. Beef fillet and the bread pudding had to be my favorite. My sisters scallops were divine. Bookings are essential.

Visited Myoga with my wife a month ago during restaurant week as a pre birthday celebration. Had the wine pairing with the 6/7 course menu. Totally awesome. Food out of this world, wines spot on and service excellent. Will definitely be back.

For our 5 year anniversary my partner surprised me with dinner at this fancy place! <br/><br/>All i can say is wow!<br/>From the moment you walk in from the moment you leave, you will be treated like a queen and king.<br/><br/>We had the 10 course tasting menu (not too sure about the amount of tasters as it seemed like it was 20) :-) <br/><br/>The imagination of the chef is incredible, the presentation of the food is done perfectly, and cooked to perfection. The taste of each dish is magnificent. <br/><br/>Everything was perfect! Spot on! Insanely talented chef's.<br/><br/>Prices are expensive, but one cannot put a price on what was served to us! It was magical! <br/><br/>Service, well, we were served like kings and queens! <br/><br/>Every cent spent here is well worth it!

I went to Myoga for dinner last night and we had the 7 course tasting menu. I've been meaning to go for ages and was so excited... The food and service absolutely exceeded my expectations! Everything was delicious and such value for money. You pay for 7 courses but end up getting about 10. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd have to say the 24hr slow cooked sous-vide pork belly with pork terrine. This isn't on the menu yet but they were running it as a special.. Totally delicious. The "death of strawberry shortcake" was the highlight of my evening! So theatrical!

Fantastic atmosphere with delicately chosen menu.... Absolutely love going to this place. A must stop when in the city.... Delicious works of 🎨 art.

We visited Myoga last week for restaurant week and it definitely exceeded our expectations! The food was phenomenal and service exceptional! Each course was better than the previous and the amount of preparation and thought that went into the presentation and execution blew us away. What a treat! Our favourites for the evening were by far the venison, the seared tuna, the fillet, the duck tacos, the chocolate dessert, and the strawberry shortcake. They even treated us to a seventh course to celebrate my boyfriends birthday! We honestly couldn't have asked for anything more. Do yourself a favour and try this wonder for yourself!!

I had such an amazing experience here for Restaurant Week. Their six course menu was superb and really filling! They didn't skimp on anything and the flavours were out of this world! I highly recommend trying it out!

Restaurant Week has just kicked off here in Cape Town and Myoga was a brilliant start! <br/><br/>We had the most delicious 5 course meal that started with a mushroom oatmeal tickler; it was served with a miso sauce that was poured when served. For starters I had the pork belly and Josh had chorizo prawns - both were outrageously tasty. We were then served a lemon and lemongrass sorbet to "cleanse the palate" which was probably too big a helping but I can't fault the taste or presentation. For mains I went with the recommended duck tacos and Josh ordered the springbok. These were equally good - the duck was served with a sweet confit sauce and the springbok sandwiched crisps and was oddly served with a tin-roof magnum. Yes, a magnum like the ice cream (?). This was strange but not bad. <br/><br/>The dessert was a real crowd pleaser; Josh got the "death of a Cheescake" which is essentially a cloud of candy floss that is melted away to reveal a small cheesecake and strawberries - you have to see it to believe it. <br/><br/>All in all it was an AMAZING experience and so, so delicious from start to finish. <br/><br/>My only worry was that staff - although friendly - weren't really sure on what a lot of the ingredients were which is an issue in fine dining because white foam could be a lot of things. <br/><br/>Will be back soon ❤️

SUPERB!!! The food was absolutely fantastic. Gourmet inside and out. The food was so great but I think the service may have beat the food. Great job to the team

With seven courses there is so much to say so bear with me. The service was impeccable but unfortunately it does not make up for food that is below par. The first course or the "tickler" as it was named was quite a good start. We then went on to have the salmon and the barley risotto, the salmon was quite good by the risotto was overly sweet. For the next course we had the the many mushrooms and the tuna, both dishes were very gingery. Next came the all white scallop which was completely inedible, really disappointing as I usually adore scallops. The pallet cleanser was refreshing and sadly the nicest dish of the night. For the main event we had the angus beef fillet, unfortunately this dish disappointed more than any other dish. Next came the Black Forest memories and the coconut sphere both desserts were nice. A complimentary course was also served which consisted of three small sweet dishes, I only enjoyed one of them. I have to say that their non-alcoholic cocktails are some of the best I've tried, the gummi berry martini and the old dame is a must try

(Yes all the food I review Is halal or halal friendly - I call in advance)<br/><br/>We went to myoga last night. It was a beautiful and romantic setting. Our waiter was really friendly and attentive. We started with the tickler which was a surprise, I'm not entirely sure what it was but it was good. The next course was the risotto which I found really sweet, I loved the carrots that they'd soaked in chili - that part was divine. The next course was an Asian course, I had the many mushrooms, it was packed with ginger, too much if you ask me buy one of the better courses. The next was the scallops, the scallop was cooked beautiful but, I didn't like the burnt orange sauce which seemed to overpower the delicate scallop. The angus beef, okay, now I love beef - I have steak all the time. This beef although soft had a strange texture and taste, the ox tongue was okay but the bone marrow I wasn't a fan of. We also had a lovely pallet cleanser in the middle somewhere which was really refreshing. For dessert i had the coconut thing I'm not sure of the full name, it was one of the best courses of the evening, and I'd recommend it over the chocolate - EVENTHOUGH I LOVE CHOCOLATE. It was a decent evening overall. The food didn't live up to my expectation and there were limited choices for me, even though I had previously stated my dietary requirements.

Lunch was very disappointing. We had the duck, nothing to it and not very tasty. The mango was also lost on me. Service was very poor too. Won't be going back in a hurry. A waste of R1000.

We celebrated our 8th anniversary at Myogo. We decided on the 7 course tasting menu and wine pairing. the whole course from start to finish was presented beautifully, tasty and with the wine pairing made it extra special. Our server, Robert was very knowledgable and gave us his recommendation on his favourite dishes, which we decided would be best and not disappointed. Thank you Robert and Myoga for a taste experience we will not soon forget. Apologies for the picture quality, but just had to share. Definitely worth a visit!

Excellent ! We had the 7 course tasting menu ( which is actually more of a 9 course menu) Everything was outstanding , the dessert ( strawberry shortcake ) was superb ! Service was very good . Would definitely recommend this resturant!

What an awesome experience and such amazing food! A #Foodies dream. Went with a big group so got got taste quite a bit of the menu and everything was outstanding 🙌🏻

Had a wonderful special lunch, delicious steak and seasonal vegetables, impeccable plating and a fantastic array of wines. A wonderful ambience with beautiful decor, a real treat!
Shari Rebecca Mayers
Delicious food , amazing atmosphere and fantastic service!<br/><br/>Not a cheap restaurant but it lives up to the price tag. I can't fault Myoga- every last detail is perfection and the whole dining experience was exceptional.

The concept is fairly simple... 7 tasters over the evening to ensure you don't get the food envy of having ordered only one dish. Some courses were better than others - stand -it's at our table were the tomato and I've -cream salad (don't knock out until you've tried it), the shrimp omelette, the black-ink and most of the deserts. Across 7 courses, there will always be some that some now than others. Overall, it was an excellent food experience in a lovely setting. Unfortunately, some of the courses had sold out by the time we were ready to order, so we were a bit disappointed by that. It would have been great if a magnum had been left on the table - your memory of what was ordered become hazy by the 3rd course. I also recommend you arrive fairly early. We arrived at 7h45 and only ate our final course after midnight. By that point out was difficult to appreciate it as we were all starting to fall asleep. For something a little special, this is a great night out

Visited as part of a conference. This restaurant overlooks table mountain and has the most exquisite gardens. The food was delicious and the portions were more than enough. Excellent service. Highly recommended

We tried the tasting menu and I can really recommend it! the service was fantastic and the food was delicious. Definitely going back for more. Only downside is that they don't do corkage.
Derek Miller
It has been over a year since I last came to Myoga but the food is is just as good and the service excellent. The decor has changed tho, a bit more subdued with no more super high backed chairs! Once again I had the 7 course tasting menu an was not disappointed. The start and finish are so clever but each dish is really special and with wine pairing you won't be disappointed. Not may Restuarants get 4.5 to 5 consistently and actually deserve it. Well done. One of the lesser known cape Restuarants you must try!

Myoga is one of my favourite restaurants in Cape Town. Every time I go there, you just feel so special like you are in for a treat. The food is spectacular and so is the service. With a few eating restrictions/ concerns they are so accommodating. I usually save this place for special occasions but I wish I could go more often. Look out for the groupon special as it is insane value.
Amy Hand
I was excited to eat here because I've never tried a tasting menu or a wine pairing but this time I did both. I purposefully picked things I'd never tried before and I was not disappointed!<br/><br/>The food looked beautiful, it tasted incredible and the wines were the perfect fit.<br/><br/>The service was friendly and not uptight how you might expect. All the dishes were explained perfectly and the wines were also well described.<br/><br/>The really nice touch was the fact that the petite four was a perfect replica of the first course but a sweet version. <br/><br/><br/>I would go back in a heartbeat.

Myoga is currently offering impressive specials that you NEED to take advantage of. <br/><br/>We enjoyed their tapas menu for 2 which consisted of 8 savoury tapas dishes, a sorbet palate cleanser, 3 desserts, and a glass of wine each, all for R450. The best part? The dessert portions were the largest! <br/><br/>When the tapas started coming out, I worried that the portions were too small and we'd leave hungry. I was wrong! We definitely left satisfied. <br/><br/>The downside is that they serve 2 tapas on one large plate, making sharing difficult. It would have been best to have each dish on its own plate as they did with the desserts pictured below. <br/><br/>Everything looked beautiful, and was executed well. A small gripe is that a couple of dishes were a little bland to me. But that could just be down to personal taste. Stand-outs included the confit duck, ostrich, and coconut cream dessert. <br/><br/>The waiters are so knowledgeable and warm, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. They do a 7 course tasting menu too, which sounds like great value for money.

Myoga is by far my favourite Cape Town restaurant. My husband and I have dined here countless times and will continue to do so in future. On my latest visit i took 2 colleagues for supper. They had an absolutely wonderful time. One of them had been there before and had written the place off but after a second visit... With me... She has put it on her favourites list. I should totally become an ambassador or marketing guru for Myoga lol 🙃
Sarah
One of my favourite and most visited fine dining restaurants. From excellent service to some truly gourmet meals, this restaurant never fails to deliver. Each visit is a memorable one and the taster menu is definitely a must-do. Something worth saving up to visit!

Superb fine-dining experience and often the tasting menu is on special so don't miss this!  Beautiful setting and great food pairings, use of jellies and froth and combinations you would never normally think of. Enjoy!

We went on a groupon three course meal deal. All three courses were amazing. We had great service. Lots of wine was poured and the cocktails are 5-stars of perfect. We were treated like kings and queens - amazing fine dining experience.

Really great experience...Went for my husband Birthday...service was great ambience was Romantic which was exactly what a was going for...<br/><br/>My favorite out of the dishes as we did the food and wine pairing...Risotto was out of this world! The shrimp omelette was incredible.I will definitely be back!

There are very few restaurants one can put in the elite category, there are even less that can double up into the value for money category. R320 for a 7 course taster menu ( which is super filling ) is insanely cheap. You actually end up getting 10 or 11 dishes with all the other tasters. This is art on a plate and you can feel the passion in the food. I have been here before and I am never disappointed. Beautifully presented as always. Well done again team, I really taste your love in every bite. Loved every second. Until we eat again xoxo
Richard
Quite scrumptious and beautifully done. Can't wait to go back. The flavours exploded in the mouth and looked so appealing when laid out on the large plates. Not sure the enormous chairs were totally congruous.
Jessica Faulds
My Family and I went to Myoga for the seven meal tasting menu with wine pairing. <br/><br/>It was absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to anyone. The chefs put together innovative meals with explosive flavours. <br/><br/>The staff were extremely knowledgeable and explained every detail of the food on our plates as well as how each wine complimented the food. <br/><br/>The restaurant itself is beautiful.
Basil
Good food and attentive staff. Excellent maitre'd. The setting and venue are top notch. Had a very good time and highly recommendable. A must

We have kept a review book for many years, so that we can go back and remember the evening. <br/><br/>Myoga was a 2012 visit and we had the wine pairing tasting menu. From my 3 pages of notes it is clear that I enjoyed myself and felt the need to detail.  Food has been dotted with notes of Fantastic, deliceous, the best I have ever eaten, to a little chewy and maybe a bit dense. But then I am truely picky so to get a "the best I have ever eaten out of me"... Well done Myoga.

OMGoodness!!! I can't even begin to tell you how great this place is. From the very informative wait staff to the exquisite presentation of the food. Please. I urge any and everyone to try this place. We ordered the seven course tasting menu. Promise it will not disappoint.  The wines paired with each course were also soooo good. The food is worth every cent they charge you. Waste no time looking for another place to dine. If you are visiting Cape Town with limited time i've saved you time searching. =) If you are a local and haven't been, well no time better than the present.

This review has been a tough one to wright as there where<br/>good things, bad things and indifferent things. To complicate the issue I found<br/>it difficult to compare this place to another place that I have written about. As<br/>always my rating is based on the combination of food, price, service and<br/>overall experience.<br/><br/><br/>I found myself constantly comparing my experience to the experiences<br/>I have had at Test Kitchen, now this is a bit unfair for two reasons. Firstly<br/>this place does not have the natural ambiance of the Test Kitchen and secondly<br/>they are cheaper that the Test Kitchen i.e. a 5 coarse meal with wine pairing<br/>at the same price as Test does just the food.<br/> <br/><br/>So, let’s break it down:<br/> <br/><br/>Food: it was ok, some dishes better than others. All, with<br/>the exception of one, required additional seasoning. The egg custard with spicy<br/>prawn was delicious but the rest was average.<br/> <br/><br/>Price: the food didn’t live up to the prices. It looked<br/>beautiful but didn’t deliver the flavour for the price tag.<br/> <br/><br/>Service: the waiter was not great! He didn’t deliver the<br/>explanation of the food well and was not always available, disappearing for<br/>long periods when we needed him. In addition, and this really irritated me, we<br/>had to keep on reminding them to bring our wine pairing. They would deliver the<br/>food and then run around trying to get the wine arrange. Not the level of service<br/>you expect from a place with this type of reputation.<br/> <br/><br/>Overall experience: the place is a bit old, no one greeting<br/>you at the door (an absolute basic!), the kitchen is exceptionally noisy and<br/>all of what I have said above has to wrap it up with a very average rating.<br/> <br/><br/>So all up I had a good evening but that was largely<br/>influenced by the people we were with. Would I choose to go back? No, I would<br/>rather wait for a table at Test Kitchen and pay the extra money.
Tandi Hattingh
The food was amazing, but what i found totally mind blowing was how inexpensive it was for the 7 course wine paring. Our waiters were fantastic. I say waiters as unfortunately our waiter collapsed, we were very sad as he was so much fun, but his brother took over and assured us that he was ok. I am not one for a dessert wine, so Hendrik our new waiter offered me anything else i would like in it's place. that really was an amazing night all round...i might need a wheel barrow for the next few days but totally worth it.
Lekha Amod
The venue and service here is sophisticated, classy and yet relaxed. The tasting menu is a real treat at the price. This is our choice for a family celebration and have loved it every time.
LoveFood! Blog
One of the best tasting menus I have done...the only hard part is deciding every course as you sit down...especially when there are so many delicious choices. I recommend taking someone you can share with - then you can taste double the amount of dishes! hehe! <br/>It really is value for money when you see the amount of food and the number of courses. The only thing you need to realise is it will take you at least 3 hours to get through all the course but it is so worth it.<br/>The course that was my favourite was the death by chocolate - I had a chocolate and ginger fondant, chocolate and blood orange mousse, chocolate pannacotta and chocolate milk...all I can say is wow and I also died from too much chocolate but it was worth it!
Candice Bresler
Honestly, wonderful. Their 7 course tasting menu (for R225) is fantastic - generous portions, great value for money and beautiful setting. My only regret is that I didn't take photographs for a review - will have to go back. A real gem in suburbia. Fantastic for a special date or a treat for the family - that won't cost you a fortune. Impeccable.
