Review Swagath Indian Cuisine - Johannesburg

Jeanne Burns
Oh wow is all I can say. The food is seriously amazing. I had the Prawn Curry. It was the best I ever had. Most delicious. It's a real traditional Indian food. Service is good and restaurant is quaint. We've had the lamb curry on the bone too and it was awesome. Looks are deceiving... but really worth the visit. The menu is really vast. So much to offer you. Have a big appetite when u go there. There Naan bread is oh wow amazing.

A friend of ours suggested this restaurant and I can also recommend it. The food is really tasty and portion sizes are perfect. Staff are friendly and extremely polite.

North Indian menu, which has a different mix of masala and preparation when compared to Malay style of cooking. Food has options for mild, medium or hot. Recommended flavour is mild or medium; food is tasty and prepared well. Option to sit down and eat at the restaurant ; or order take away is available. Staff are helpful and friendly. Expect about 15-20 minute wait for food orders. Can busy at dinner times, consider ordering ahead. Covid-19 safety protocols apply : temperature checks, sanitize and face mask.

Great place to have indian cuisine. Must try chicken majestic and chicken dum biryani. But chicken lollipops are too bad in taste. Whereas first time had rohu curry over there its was yummy.

This was my first visit to Swagath. I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. We ordered samosas, a lamb vindaloo, a chicken madras and a chicken korma. These were absolutely mouthwatering and I could not fault either of the dishes presented. The dishes have generous portion sizes and are served in lovely dishes, which really adds to the experience. Each main is served with fluffy rice, but we also ordered naans and a roti as sides. Both of these were as authentic as I can imagine, soft and with just the right amount of chew to make them very moreish. As a sit in, the venue is clean and well presented but does lack warmth and a wee bit of personality. Other than that, it was a lovely experience with happy diners all round.

Try the lamb curry on bone, hot. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly seasoned.

I've only had lamb bunny delivered from them a few times I highly recommend it! 👌 I'd give the lamb bunny 10 stars if I could 🌟 The bread is always fresh, the meat is cooked to perfection, the spices are big in your mouth and it's boneless! Keep it up Swagath! You guys rock 🤘

Definitely returning! The owner of the store took his time to go through the menu with us and advised what would work in terms of what we were after. The food was incredible! Look forward to stopping by again

One of the best places have Biriyani when you are in Johannesburg.. The restaurant has a very good service and the waiters are hospitable too. Service time is more. Ample parking space available too..

Writing this review after a few curries from here, although they have all been takeaways! Staff friendly and inline pricing for what you would expect a curry to cost. Good portions, great flavors, love the naan bread as well! Havent gone wrong yet and 5 curries down! Great place for the price

Best Indian food for miles. Curries, amazing. Biryani, top class. Naan, perfect. We really enjoyed everything we ordered: butter chicken, lamb dahl ghosht, garlic naan, chicken lollipops and chicken sheek kebab.

On 15 September 2020 I placed a R570.70 order which included my favourite Lamb Dahl Gosht. I usually get value for the price of each dish but not on this occasion. I was met with inedible rock hard chunks of lamb covered in sauce. When I called to alert them that I felt ripped off and that I wanted to speak to the manager I was told “we are sorry Sir” and that management would call me back. I’m still waiting for that call. I am certain I will find an Indian cuisine establishment in the vicinity that can serve soft lamb. Cheers

Former loyal customer✌🏾

This place is unbelievably amazing! It is definitely one of the top two Indian restaurants in Joburg. The food is so tasty and we'll spiced. And the portion sizes are reasonable. Highly recommended.
Above average Indian food. I've had excellent breyani and paneer from Swagath. Despite being mild the food was full of flavour. Not a great place for sitting down, but perfect for a takeaway.

Attentive service and food was tasty and very reasonably priced. Nice small restaurant with quite a wide and varied menu. My first visit but will definitely return.

Small little spot a bit hidden away in the bottom corner of the shopping centre. It is however worth looking for it. And this how I like it - small, unpretentious, and great food.

Have now been here multiple times, which speaks volumes. Staff are friendly, quick and efficient. Manager now knows what to recommend when I sit down. Wonderfully flavoured pappadums are on the table within minutes.

The menu is quite varied - vegetarian, chicken, lamb curries in all guises - and a lot more. Good menu but not confusing.

I regularly go for a lamb curry of some flavour - and these guys do not disappoint! Some of the best curries I have found in Johannesburg.

Recommended.

==================

Repeat visit:
Tried something new: Paneer Tikka starter - amazing - cheese is made on site and the flavours are incredible.

This place is our almost daily gateway dinner destination and I am writing this review after almost 20 visits to this place.I love the food they serve, really delicious comes with real indian taste. If you are wondering where can you find the authentic indian food, this is the place. You should try their dum biryani and if vegan , try their mushroom masala.

This place is pretty great. I've grabbed a takeaway about 3 times now and haven't been disappointed. The food is fresh, flavourful and authentic. Located just underneath Chicago's piano bar.

Really good food and service, always have the aloo gobi mutter extra hot and paneer butter masala! The naan breads are good as well and so are the starters
Santoshnmaharaj
Ordered paneer pakoda, paneer butter masala, chilli paneer & tandoori roti. Food was fresh & absolutely delicious. Will definitely buy from there again.

Great food, great service, a lot of options, really accommodating for vegans. We were really happy to find this great Indian place close to us.
Pratik Laharpure
There service is very slow, in the order preparation time you can cook food yourself. So if you are very hungry do not go to this place and I ordered mix veg and कोल्हापुरी which tested like Chinese boiled food.

This is our "go-to" Indian restaurant. We have a take-away from here 2 or 3 times a month. Their food is delicious! I am vegetarian and really enjoy their paneer dishes. The paneer kebab and paneer tikka are great. The aloo tikki chaat is also really good. My husband has tried a few chicken curries but his favourite is the butter chicken - rich and full of flavour.
The food takes a while, but is totally worth the wait.

This is my favorite Indian restaurant, the staff are amazing and the food is delicious, I love the prawn and chicken curry , its become a weekly visit . the prices are really low compared to other Indian restaurants in the area ,its well worth a visit
Jalapeño Popper
Fantastic.... really brilliant. With a craving for Indian and no desire to go out we placed a take out order. On collection we found the restaurant to be tiny, full and very neat. We will certainly have to go back for the full experience. The butter chicken was one of the best we have tasted, the tandoori mixed platter for two was awesome, the chicken so tender it almost melted like chocolate. Wow... oh and the prices are certainly lower than other local Indian restaurants. We will be back with a table full of friends...

There's not much to the actual restaurant itself. But I can tell you I've never been so IMPRESSED by a local Indian restaurant. Food tastes super authentic and the prices are so reasonable. I make it a point to at least get takeout from there once a month! - my favorite by far!
Mikayla Jo Birkholtz
Phenomenal food! So tasty. Best naan bread I've ever tasted. I thought the butter chicken was good until I tasted the coconut chicken that my friend ordered. Complex flavours and everything tasted heavenly. Mild was perfect for me - great balance between spice and flavor

Last night was our second time in one week going to this little treasure! I highly recommend them, their curry has to be one of the best I've tried in joburg. I didn't attach photos of the curries as it's hard to make curry look good, however the samoosas were more than happy to pose. The samoosas have a unique shape to them, i personally prefer the chicken samoosas to the veg. One should definetlly try the chicken Madras and chicken jalfrezi.
Pieter Koekemoer
We had dinner here for a second time and we were once again blown away by the delicious food. The value for money is also great. Bring your own wine as they don't have a liquor license, corkage is on the house.
Nthabeleng Tshabalala
Great food, I will definitely be going back. The service was a bit slow and I was a bit surprised that you can bring in your own alcohol since they're not licensed yet.
Abs
The service is very poor. The waiting period is almost 45 mins to 1 hr even there's no crowd. We placed an order for a dhal, after 45 mins waiter came and mentioned about order not being available.
Joan Brown Spaull
Had lamb bunny chow and chicken Jalfreze , was excellent, good portion, lots of meat, will definitely go back support this restaurant to keep it going

Been to swagath a few times and food is really good and tasty! Service is good as well. They are not licensed but u can take your own drinks.

Ordered takeaways. The food was better than most Indian takeaways I've been to, with reasonable prices. Bean bunny was tasty and filling.

Friendly service from all the staff. I'll definitely be going there again.
