Review Society Eatery & Craft Bar - Johannesburg

Mark Magic
A great spot for just meeting mates, or in our case, having a family outing. The food was awesome, the staff were excellent! A really nice atmosphere and I will be back again! A limited but good enough menu with decent craft beer and cocktails! Situated in a small centre!
Sarah Ebben
I only discovered this gem recently, and I wish I had found them sooner! The food is absolutely delicious! The service and the staff are always so friendly and efficient!! Watched the RWC final here and even with the place being completely booked out, the service was still top notch, the seating was done in such a way that we all still had space to move around. Honestly, such a great spot!! It's also so beautiful to sit outside and enjoy a nice warm afternoon.

A hidden gem, tucked away perfectly, so you're not contending with big centre factors. Incredible vibe and decadent food. Service is friendly and efficient, and they are all happy to help each other even though the table may not necessarily be theirs. I love the place and frequent as often as I can!

We got to the place at midweek lunch time before the party started. Good looking menu for gold old pub grub.
Josie Gaglio
Thank you for the great service from Themba 👌 Water feature makes it really relaxing to sit outside and enjoy your time with friends.

Place to be
great service and great burger. Most importantly : great beers
Lucian Rajah
One of Fourway's most underrated restaurants! I always get amazing service, cold beer and amazing food. The Wagyu burger is one of the simplest, best I've had, a must try.
Michelle Rothero
A hidden Gem, always a good vibe with the awesome music they play. We are addicted to their zucchini fries a must have starter ! The out side deck can get quiet busy but inside the vibe is just as good. Overall a very nice place to chill and catch up with friends over good food and drinks. The menu is reasonably priced.
Matthew Bradshaw
Great food, service is honestly next level with all waitrons helping each other. Awesome atmosphere, there’s usually a DJ Friday afternoons.
Nicole Themistocleous
Delish food, great service, consistently great experience!
Don Jolley
Food was a little above average but nothing to write home about. Was hoping there would be more choices of craft beer ontap but limited to 2 or 3. Service was good.

Father - Daughter evening on Friday night on recommendation of the Daughter😊😊. So, I did not even know that this little shopping complex existed, my loss. The restaurant had a really great layout, quite relaxed, especially the outside area. The reception was great, friendly and cordial. The service is really good, all round, efficient order taking and delivery of whatever is ordered, slick stuff. The Starters - Arincini Balls were somewhat heavy or stodgy, not unpleasant, but not enjoyable sadlyđŸ€Ș😊â˜čâ˜č, we sent most back. The Salt and Pepper Calamari on the other hand Champion stuff and really delicious. The Mains were really very good, my Daughter had the Butternut Ravioli, that was very tasty and my Roasted Lamb Rib meal was fantastic, so much flavour and cooked wonderfully. The accompanying veggies were sublime, a fantastic meal. Overall, with really Amazing service, not forced but genuine and wholesome service and great food, I will be returning. One thing (my favourite), maybe some Cream for a Cappuccino will just add that great final touch. High recommendation here, try it out😊😊

Nice place to meet your friends after work for dinner and drinks!

Very good service and menu selection is great

We came here on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago for a friend's birthday, there were around 15 of us in total. The service was absolutely fantastic, waiters and managers were friendly, accommodating and helpful. The food was amazing, everybody was raving about their meals (the burgers especially). Cocktails were delicious, and the waiter's suggestions were spot on... Prices was also extremely reasonable too! Will definitely be back

A cute and peaceful little spot. Their burgers and steaks are grilled to perfection. I was sceptical at first, but I had such a pleasant lunch. The ladies' room was spotless and our waitress was a sweetheart. Great for after-work drinks, a non-alcoholic beverage or a quick bite with mates .
Adam Humphrey
Great place. Really nice vibe without being so loud you can’t talk. Really good, interesting food.
Devin Sinclair
The food exceeded all expectations. I would 100% recommend the fillet.
Carole Kimani
Great ambiance, The food is to die for...anything on the menu is divine. Easy and relaxed eatery yet lends a hand to class. Friendly waiters and happy helpful bouncer too. It's like being in your living room and there's a party which speaks comfort....and of course Miki the Commander-in-Chief, always cheerful, warm, helpful and simply just a nice guy....They don't make them like that anymore...
Elizabeth Ann Sherman
Loved this place - yummy beer, tasty food and good vibe. Definitely an older crowd which suited us perfectly!

A lovely, vibrant atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly and efficient. They set a great tone for a great experience. The food is unique and delicious.

I am writing to inform people about how insecure the parking is at Society. My partner and I met at 5.30 on Friday evening after work, for a quick bite to eat. Great service and great food. However, got back to my vehicle at 7pm, only to find that my car had been broken into and all my belongings stolen from the boot (Laptop,IPad etc). My car was parked in a well lit area and in open view. I went inside to inform the manager of Society, he basically turned around and said 'It's not my problem...' we were left outside to deal with this on our own with the car guards and eventually with the police. We were the first, only to find that 5 other vehicles had been broken into in the space of 2 hours. Society has FOUR 'security guards' to look after that small area- how is this possible? And at what point does Society do something about this problem to ensure their cliental are safe in their area. (apparently this is a reoccurring issue.) I bumped into 2 other people who drove in quickly to the small shop-and they said they had been broken into before and do not go to Society anymore. I would like management to please contact me and let me know what is being done about this. I will certainly not be going back.
Brett Hilliar
First visit on a Friday afternoon, busy with a great vibe - music very relevant and at the perfect level. Service was great and food qas awesome- good value. I will certainly be going back.
Tyron Herman
They still have the awesome Kobe beef platter available... it's just not on the menu ;)
Michael John Anderson
One would think ordering an Amstel to be at the least, pedestrian, if not something that could happen with the waiter’s one hand tied behind his back and both eyes closed. But no... not even a task force of one manager and TWO waiters could materialize a beer after two requests. Send your waiters for training here at Papoulis Place, perhaps 10-20metres away. The humble waitress, sans fancy branded waiter gear, managed to produce my order in under a minute. You should be bloody ashamed of yourself. Glad I won’t be wasting my money at society. Utterly appalling.
Suzanne Cunningham
We had such a great evening there on Friday night, every dish was done exquisitely well & your desserts were delicious. What a gem:)
Pam Ashe - Pretorius
The service and food was outstanding I can deffinatly recommend it and will be going back.
Tercia Spies
Had lunch all the way from Cape Town. Food was good and very friendly service Lovely atmosphere can recommend to any one
Dianne Coubrough
Food is amazing. Best potatoes in the world. Friendly staff. Great service.
Iris Anderson
This place is awsome, especially for a after work friday afternoon. Great vibe awsome food, awsome service.
Jonathan Volmink
Food was really really good. Exactly what I wanted and was expecting. Service was top notch. Themba knew the menu and gave good advice. Like it a lot.
Sandy Reimers
Fantastic Food from the starters to the dessert! Service was great. Fabulous vibe too. We will be back again.
Chris Coetzee
Very poor service at the bar, completely disorganized. If it wasn't for a nice selection of beer and good food I wouldn't come here again.
Garth de Klerk
Always my favourite. Great food. Excellent service. Well worth it any day.
Ashley Brodrick
Hosted my birthday at Society on Saturday and was thoroughly impressed.

Great service from the waiters that assisted us- so friendly and attentive.

Food was WOW- huge compliments to the chef.

Thanks to Mickey and team.
Natalie
Just had a veggie burger delivered. The veggie burger was delicious, the only thing I would change is adding more sauce and some pickles, without, it was quite dry. The crispy potatoes were really great, especially with the salad. Loved the dressing, it was ‘pickley’ enough that I ended up adding it with some lettuce to my burger. Really glad I found this place overall. Wish the dessert menu was available on Ubereats though!
Rajesh
Food was average and the vibe was great will definitely be back, there's room to improve when it comes to service though, and the music was good
Pooja Bagrath
Lovely place!
We tried the toblerone cocktail, wagyu burger , and, mushroom risotto, amazing!! There are very few places that know how to make a good risotto, Society Eatery is definitely one of them.
Staff were friendly and attentive.
Steph Glover
This is my go-to spot for lunch or dinner with drinks. Everything I’ve tried on the menu has been amazing but the chicken prego and Asian calamari starter are top notch. Seriously, best prego roll I’ve ever had. The staff are always great and they’re super friendly and attentive.
Yaniska Singh
Loved the vibe at this restaurant! Sporting outside and inside seating with the sounds of chilled, vibey music filling the air. I ordered the gnocchi served with bread rolls. So delicious. Also tasted the chicken livers and mushroom risotto which were both divine! I would a hundred percent go there again for the great food and upbeat vibe!
Shaun Gunning
Rather disappointed. The sirloin steak was full of sinew which is difficult to understand because sirloin is renowned for a fat-cap and no sinew. The steak had no browning on the exterior so had more of a boiled beef flavour than a steak and unfortunately had zero seasoning. Bland, boiled, tough, overpriced beef is the best way to describe it. The crispy smashed potatoes have a distinct re-heated potato flavour which I suppose is understandable given how they need to be prepared for service in the manner in which they're served, however there are a plethora of other preparations or ways to serve them to avoid this problem. Texture is fine, but flavour will remind you of eating the roast potatoes on Monday evening after a Sunday lunch. At home that's fine. In a restaurant, not so much. As for the the butternut gratin, well... The butternut gratin is not gratinated whatsoever. In fact it's not a gratin. It doesn't even resemble a gratin. I'm not sure how they can call a purée a gratin and get away with it. It is quite literally a dollop of purée, and a rather bland one at that. I did call the restaurant to query this with them directly before posting this review as I assumed they must have made a mistake, and that's fine. We all make them on occasion. However the manager said that's how they interpret a gratin: it's a purée. He did promise to "look at this issue" and I sincerely hope that they change their menu copywrite to more accurately describe what it is that they're selling. I suspect that the issue they face (and why it's called a gratin) is because they can't get away with charging R32 for a smear of butternut purée on the plate and calling it a side dish. It's not a side dish at all in its current form. It's a purée and is likely to upset a lot of people who don't like to eat baby-food. It's also particularly condescending to your patrons to tell us that we just have different interpretations of what a gratin is. Both a gratin and a purée are two widely understood and accepted French culinary terms for vastly different dishes or techniques. One has the texture of baby-food and is somewhere between a soup and a sauce. The other is layered and set with a crispy top under a broiler/salamander after baking. There is no interpretation wiggle-room here. This is simply blatant and intentional misrepresentation.

The only positive from this experience was the triple mushroom sauce. One of the few restaurants that doesn't inflict a white sauce with mushrooms on their patrons. Society manage to get great flavour and texture into the sauce and it would make a great accompaniment to better mains and sides. I had a previous bad experience at Society where everything was slathered in uncooked and unmelted butter which ruined the burgers we'd ordered. I opted not to write about it then assuming it was just a bad day at the office. This is the second time I've ordered and the second bad experience.

You guys have a great location and a great vibe. You really can do better with your food. What you're serving (and what you're charging) are not commensurate with each other.

So i could not understand how a spot could be this popular at all times. From rich trophy wives to young sales men this place is always packed.

obviously they havet to be doing something right, Right?

RIGHT!!!!!!

the food here is out of this world, from the wagyu burger to the asian calamari they have it on point. the ingredients are fresh and delicious and the portions received are good enough to justify the price tag.

the hake is one of my favourites at this place and i don't normally rave about fish in jhb, you know being born in cape town and all. but i must say it is delicious.

look out for their specials from time to time especially if you are strapped for cash but would really like to give them a try.

will be back soon
Cheryl Gilfillan Dinkelmann
Interesting little place tucked away in a centre I never knew existed. Very nice decor. I ordered the double mushroom risotto which was very oily. The menu seemed to have a lot of interesting meals so I may go back and try again.
Livashnee David
Now I know why this place is crazy busy. The food here is great. I am not sure what our waiters name is but he was extremely helpful and assisted me in picking the items for these platters. The food here is quite expensive for the portion size but its good quality. I didn't like the rosemary dipping sauce felt it was a bit overpowering but I always like hoisin sauce. Not sure what the other (white) sauce was but it lacked flavour. There's not enough stools to sit on but when you've been drinking for 5hrs I guess it doesn't matter.
Jeff Siepman
Great place to grab some great craft beer and a burger with friends.

The staff are friendly and welcoming and the service is good. The decor is arty/modern and you can choose to sit inside or outside.

All the burgers are super tasty but the wagyu was the best for me.
Kylie Jade Botes
Absolutely great for a get together. I love how different the decor is. The food is finger food but very tasty. Very vibey on the right night/afternoon
Candy.rupert8
Tried the laager-battered fried hake, with smashed crispy fried potatoes. Freshly made and tasted great. Good vibe as well, especially for after work drinks..
Nixie
Love this hang out. The service is sweeeet! Food is really good. You must call to book a table. Awesome place to spend the night or pre drinks before you head out
Luis
I went to visit this restaurant on the recommendation of Lucian

What I can say is.. thanks Society Eatery and Craft for ruining my perception of other burgers.. I can honestly not think of a better burger now.

I tried both the Ribeye and Wagyu burgers, the simple combinations of flavors were perfect (for lack of a better word), not overpowering and complimented each other well, the meats flavor was the leader on these burgers..the way it should be.

These guys have set the bar so high that even the staple "well known burger franchise that puts mayo on everything" are now just mediocre.

Judging from the care taken with my burger, I'd like to try some of the other items on the menu asap.

My one single concern has to do with the comfort of the restaurant, should you wish to sit outside in the warm sun, you are forced to sit in a smoking section, I suppose you cant really help this. so the best we could do was move to a lesser populated area on the deck. I could imagine this place when its bustling would be rather uncomfortable for non-smokers.

Great service, simple menu and fantastic selection of craft beer, this is now one of my favorite lunch spots when I visit Fourways
Cristina Peral
Some girlfriends and I went to Society last night for an early dinner and overall the food and atmosphere was good. We shared a board that contained the chicken pops, cauliflower pops, zucchini fries and the battered hake goujons - all of which were delish. For me my favourite was the zucchini fries and least favourite was the cauliflower pops as I felt it lacked in flavour. With me being preggy I had a Banana milkshake which was super delish that I ordered a 2nd one 😊. Service was too good to a point that the waiter and manager checked in too often for my liking - I understand that they want to keep their patrons happy, but over checking can get a bit annoying.
Graham Miller
First visit for a late lunch, excellent service and food! Look forward to going back to try more of the menu and different range of drinks. Recommend for a casual relaxed outing.
Jakispring
What a great spot, super for post work drinks, chill weekend vibe or a birthday party. Great value, tasty and fresh food. Love this place. Thank you.
Monochrome
Reasonable service. Manager pleasant. Food good & craft beer selection đŸ‘đŸœ. The centre that the restaurant is in is a bit depressing- however may return to try another dish.
Gramo
Well, well, well.... so after have not ever trying this place for a hell of a long time my best mate thought let's try this spot

I glanced at the menu and one thing caught my eye.... the tacos, man o man the platter comes with fish, pork and something else I didn't really care about since I ate and ate all the fish tacos and then ordered more

Best ever, the drinks were good the service outstanding and to think this was at 12.30pm
I was told this place is off the hook later that evening

I was a little weary about this place being a little pretentious (since I was in shorts) but nothing remotely close

Will def go back there tapas are the best ever

Thanks team Society

Final Thought:

One may think why if everything was good only 4.5 and not a 5 well because first impression wow I need to go back one more time and If it's the same (which I hear will be) then Bada Bing Bada Boom we change
Sesh
The pub vibe with the outdoor patio area, indoor dining and the bar area gives you choice of seating for your mood. This is definitely a place that pulls that friday/saturday crowds everyday.

Food was excellent with a nice craft seletion, cocktails and wine menu. We started with the prawns and asian calamari which were good. On the mains the lamb ribs was probably one of the best lamb dishes I've had. Those smashed crispy pototoes have to get a special mention. Super yum. The risotto with the addition of fillet medallions was also good but when I tried the risotto with the lamb, heavenly. This combo is what I'll do as a special request on my next visit. For desserts we shared the churros with the divine dark chocolaty bar one sauce, you can't go wrong with crispy churros and this sauce.

Service was tentative and friendly. Loved this place.
Michelle Robin
My husband and I have been to Society a few times now and I have to say that I am impressed every single time. I am amazed at how good the food is; one tends to make the assumption that you will presented with pub food but this is not the case. They have quite a variety on their menu, ranging from boards to share to full on main meals that you would expect at an upmarket restaurant. We have eaten a fair bit off the menu and everything we have had has been absolutely delicious. My personal favourite is the gnocchi; so light and airy but still doughy. It doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth and the sauce it comes in is an Italian's dream! My only wish is that it came in a bigger portion! :-)

The churros are also fabulous! Very crispy on the outside but soft in the middle with the most divine chocolate dipping sauce on the side.

They have a great drinks menu, not to mention their bottomless bubbly special that they run.

Great place, great vibe, great service, great food!
Lucianrajah
Let's get this out of the way: one of the best burgers I've EVER had. The simplicity, freshness of the bun, waygu patty, accompanying condiments and perfectly fried chips are better than I've had in a long time.

It's well situated, well themed and has an array of craft taps to make any beer lover drool. The staff are friendly, the service sharp and orders arrive in almost record time.

I'll say it again, one of the best burgers. Because of the location, it'll probably become my go-to burger fix.

Incredible experience.
Jared Smith
Easily one of my favourite Gastro Pubs. Situated in a hidden away shopping centre giving it a real village feel.
A wide range of craft beers. Simply amazing food menu. I've tried most of everything and never been let down. From their tapa boards to their main meals.
Definitely a must do for sundowners.
Late night on Friday nights can be a little noisy as it's quite popular, so I prefer to go on Saturday afternoons when I always have a great timr
Lisa
Society has been on my bookmarked list for a long time, finally tried it today with a bunch of friends. Waiter (Jabulani) was tentative and on the ball, kept our bill separate from everybody else's bill, which is high maintenance on its own. Bill was spot on and 100% correct.

Food was so good, ordered their Asian style calamari mmmmm delicious!!! Also went for the chargrilled lamb riblets OMG amazing! The zucchini fries were ok, a bit heavy and oily.
Ricardo
This is a fantastic place in terms of the food, range of craft beers, gin and all round good vibe. The risotto is one of the best I've tasted. Only one issue, with the waiter trying to extort a hefty tip from our table. He actually had the cheek to come back and ask for the extra cash based on a 10 % rate, which on a hefty bill is unreasonable , bearing in mind it was an already very generous tip and was a rough estimate based on the service received on the night (some drinks forgotten, undercooked meat, ) ! My food had to be sent back to be cooked properly and I sat without my meal while everyone else at our table ate theirs We reported it to the manager who issued a new bill reflecting the higher tip! The manager never returned to apologise. They need to work a bit on staff training,. Tips are not mandatory and are based on service. I will go back, but if this is a regular issue, it will leave a bad taste to what would otherwise be a great evening
Heather Hook
What a great little spot - and on a rainy day in Joburg, the fireplace was a welcoming feature. The deck looks like it would be a great summer drinks spot, and they do a daily R 140 bottomless bubbly special, which I am dying to try out.
We enjoyed some great coffees, and as it was a business meeting we were attending, steered clear of the rather tempting craft beer menu.
My chicken prego was filling and well priced at R77 - Churro's with barone sauce were also a huge hit at the table as well. Service was very attentive and I will certainly be back!
Dewald Katzke
What a place great vibe and service, craft beer always a winner. Had the pulled pork stacks a little bit spicy but not overpowering, went on to the winner hands down the Triple mushroom risotto finally ended with the Mexican churros with Bar-One dipping sauce.
Lauren Leigh
Nice little place. Good service and ambience. The wagyu burger was really delicious - home made and cooked perfectly. Will definitely be back for their bottomless bubbly at some point.
The Food Musketeer
02.09.2016 I finally made a booking to try this spot. The menu looked interesting and had a good combination of flavours.

I appreciated that the manager called me on the day to confirm my booking and let me know they going to be really busy. I told him as long as the food is good and he didn't double book me (I.e. cancel my booking) and my table is still available I don't mind if it's busy.

We arrived and the place was packed and had quite a vibe.

They also have a few good Gin options which I tried. I can't for the life of me remember the cocktails I had but they were delicious and definitely didn't skimp on the alcohol. The one however was definitely not what I had ordered (had cardomon in it) but drank it anyway as it was still gin and it's always a mission sending drinks back.

We ordered the charred lamb riblets and spicy prawns for starters. Loved it. Just my prawns needed some more sauce with the dry ciabatta that was served with it.

For mains we took the Fillet with Garlic Buttered Black Mushrooms, Butternut Gratin and Crispy Potatoes and the Mushroom Risotto. Enjoyed it but my fillet was slightly dry and the Rissoto was good.

Dessert options were a Trio of Ice Cream and Churros. Now ive been on a Churro hunt of late so I had to try them. The Chocolate Sauce was good, but the actual Churro didn't deliver. It was very heavy and doughy. As for the ice cream sadly I also wasn't a fan. It was very icy and the flavours - vanilla, salted caramel and salted chocolate were not to my liking at all. The management did ask what we thought and we told them and I liked that they were hands on and going around checking up on the patrons.

I still think it's a funky place with some good menu options and will definitely go back and try some other items which I couldn't try on this ocasion.
TheHungryKat
We came here for a friends birthday one Saturday evening. We waited a bit to be served both our drinks and mains, but we weren't complaining. The place was great and the company good too. The ginger beer is a must and so are their onion rings! I ordered the chicken prego with smashed fries potato and extra onion rings, it was delicious! All of it was well prepared and served! Definitely coming back for good food!
Chante Daries
I was pleasantly surprised with this place. The vibe was so chilled and the service was pretty great too. We had the fillet and the wagyu burger which was delicious. Definitely going back.
Carole Craggs
We had a pleasant work lunch at Society today. We were well looked after by Professor. I had the Wagyu burger which was excellent. Others on the table tried the steak, vegetarian burger, deconstructed pork. All the food was well presented and everyone was happy with their meals. The lingering few ordered dessert in the late afternoon - the icecream is definitely a little salted and it was seriously one of the best icecreams I've ever had, and I'm a little icecream obsessed.
Claudia McGregor
I was sold when I read pulled pork taco with crispy crackling but the food was not as delicious as I had hoped and the service not overly friendly- maybe I went on an off day! Otherwise nice vibe overall...
Klee Barris
Cosy Society Eatery & Craft Bar is a wonderfully warm and inviting craft eatery.

The roaring fireplace, trendy decor and free glass of vino (if you uber there) is a fantastic way to start an evening off. In summer their deck must be a hit!

The chic pub grub menu offers something for everyone including...
Leevi Vyvian Paasch
I would just like to compliment the staff of society! We had so much fun and excitement.
I would like to compliment Professor on his service. He is the friendliest person alive! Give that man a Jameson! He earns it!
Lize Kiki Crafford
Had an awesome time at society! Great service awesome cocktails, the food is great had the mushroom risotto a previous time and it was delicious. Thank you to professor for being an excellent waiter! Will definitely come back.
Tables And Thyme
Society Eatery is a great spot for cocktails or craft beer with delicious tapas or chic pub grub. With a location that's not on a main road or inside a shopping center, the outside area is great for Jozi's sunny days. The service is friendly and efficient. The menu offers a good variety. You have to order the churros - worth the calories!
Portia Heshu
We had an awesome time at Society on Sunday (03 July 2016). My husband and I had the Lamb Rib Roast and it is delicous.... The customer service is excellent!!! Overall a great restaurant you hangout with friends and family.
Thabile
awesome restaurant! bottomless bubbly is the bomb! the food was also amazing! great Sunday afternoon with good company! will definately be back
Koketso MmaNaledi Ramoshebi
Awesome lunch - I had the the mushroom risotto that i absolutely loved. Awesome bottomless bubbly just kept flowing! Awesome time! I absolutely loved this place!
Stacey Lintnaar
We just had an outstanding lunch at Society. We had the mushroom risotto with fillet and the chicken prego. In all seriousness, we give the food here 12/10. Yes it's that good. We were seated by the fire and received excellent service. We will be back repeatedly.
Tharien Coetzee
It is always a good day when you get to have lunch with friends. Location: Social Eatery & Craft bar, Attendees: Chantelle Le Roux Tables And Thyme Jade Roberts Tharien Coetzee Occasion: Who needs an excuse to eat, drink and catch up? But in this case we heard a rumour that the Social Eatery had launched a new cocktail menu featuring Inverroche Gin cocktails.

We started off with drinks having heard only good things about Inverroche, I tried the Rosemary and Pomegranate aka Inverroche Amber and it was delightfully refreshing. I tried (and finished) the Classic as well and found it equally light and delicious.

For starters we decided to order a few dishes and just share so that we could taste everything but a stand-out would be the zucchini fries and the Asian calamari.

For mains I had the Pistachio crusted Salmon with asian noodles and even though it was delicious I stared with envy at the smashed potatoes on the other plate.

The ambiance at the Social Eatery is one where wood meets concrete, water meets iron and the service is extremely friendly and professional. Our glasses were never empty and our sunny spot on the deck one of many occupied by happy patrons.

For dessert we had only one thing on our minds and that was churros!!!!! Again we shared and again we found it perfect. Delicious crunchy coating with a fabulous chocolate dipping sauce and just for fun, gorgeous strawberries.

The perfect location for a lazy afternoon. A menu with something for everyone and a drinks menu to die for. We will definitely be back!
Banele Manana
Lovely lamb riblets.

Ideal for light lunch and some drinks. đŸș

Busy on Friday night and Saturdays. But you still get great service.

Do try the chocolate fondant, my favourite dessert and never been disappointed here!
Keabetswe Jessica Ramatsie
Nice afternoon/evening out I enjoyed the Zucchini fries. We had a selection of their board items had no idea how large the portions would be. Great items for sharing. The Rosemary mayo was delicious. Good service
Collin Allin
Great place to go after work for a few drinks as normally has a great vibe.. Service can be a little slow but the food more than makes up for that.. But avoid if you in a rush, great selection of beers too
Michelle Potgieter
We were entertained with the usual trademark gin and tonics and were migrated onto the outstanding inverocche craft gin and tonics. If that was not enough, after a lecture on craft gin, we were introduced to the fabulous variety of whiskeys, both single malt and blends. We are still here and we are still tasting :-)) this is the place to be on a sunday!

And the winner is Glenlivet 18 yr. 2nd Port Charlotte and 3rd Glenmorangie 18 yr
Chélin Sam
We consider ourselves foodies, generally because we eat everywhere and we analyze everything! And I have to say, this trendy little place is amazing! WOW! For anyone interested in an all-round good meal, this is the place. Their Wagyu burger is by far the best item on the menu (I will take on anyone who says it isn't the best burger in JHB) and their zucchini fries are a little more than extraordinary! A must have for a good night out!
Trisha Nathoo
It's very difficult to find lamb ribs that are tasty and cooked to perfection. At Society I really enjoyed the lamb riblets. I also had the squid which was delicious.
Yolisa
This is one of my favourite after work spots for drinks and good meal. Their blueberry martini is my absolute favourite. The staff are very friendly and in winter they have a fire place inside. The pistachio crusted salmon is the one that keeps me coming back! It is devine!!!

Had a good meal here, service was a bit slow, but the beer and good food made up for the wait. The place is packed on a Friday so make sure you book.

If you're looking for somewhere that puts in a little extra thought to their food and a little extra creativity to their drinks, this is the place. Lamb Riblets served with a great Asian sauce and pulled pork pancakes starters are highlights, Rib Eye Burger, steaks and Prime Lamb Rib great on main course menu. Nice craft beers, interesting cocktails and a nice atmosphere. One irritation is that you can't order any drinks past 4 when they close at 5...definitely annoys clientele who decided to leave and they should maybe state this clearly so that those who come here aren't surprised. This is a great local however and a step up from the sanitized standardization of The Baron

Society has become one of our 'go-to', 'all time favorite' stops. Best chicken prego I've ever had. Cannot resist the zucchini fries - all paired with a Soweto Gold. Nothing better.
Pam Lourenco
A great place with an awesome vibe. Perfect for friendly get togethers. The selection of Craft Beers is intense and well priced. The food menu is small but covers all basis.

The mushroom risotto is heavenly! The pulled pork taco was a little disappointing - the pork neat was way to shredded for my liking. The deep fried zucchini and the mussel starter was the highlight of my meal.

Definitely a must go!

Another high rating! Considering how big our table was, our waiter was on form and always topping our drinks ups as the evening went on! The food was as good as it looked on the menu , though they could open up more of a vegeterian option for the vegies out there. Will definitely be back for some food and drinks though.

The lovely outdoor deck with umbrellas is a perfect spot for sipping on cold craft beer and refreshing, fruity cocktails on a summers day. We ordered a board of 'Charred' Lamb Riblets, Famous Zucchini Fries and Lager-Battered Hake Goujons to share. The portions were well sized and everything was cooked very nicely. The service was quick, the staff were friendly and we really enjoyed the music. Loved the chilled vibe, we will definitely be back.

What an amazing little place, good selection of beers, and the food... Simply put, delicious. Had the rib eye burger which was amazing and my girlfriend had the chicken prego, that peri peri sauce was devine. Highly recommended it

The vibe is electric. Being roped in for drink could not be easier or more delicious. The signature Society G&T will have you reeling for more, and as you need it, the delicious bowls and boards help curb the alcohol and satisfy the appetite, in terms of taste and presentation, bravo.

Great place for after work drinks. Can get a bit loud and there's not always a table available. The service is prompt and always friendly.
The boards are a definite must! Full points for presentation and taste!
Unfortunately the mains, pistachio crusted salmon dish, had the noodles overdone and too much of the sauce which was overpowering. The burger was smaller than I would have thought and came with a generous portion of chips.
The berry cider was very bland, and I'd give that a skip.
While I will be back, I will stick to the board selection for now.

Looking for great food and ice cold craft beer? Then look no further! Had their riblets with a Flying Dutchman draught and it was Mmmmm... Good!!! And all of this backed up with quick and friendly service!
Naomi De Carvalho
The beer menu is somewhat limited - they did not have IPA's. The food is scrumptious and the service was good. It's a great spot for a Friday stop after work.

Just had the Rib Eye Burger......it's like angels dancing on your tongue!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn it's incredible, no really an incredible burger.
Justindee26
It's a nice spacious place with a great vibe. The food was impeccable as well as the drinks menu. I will be keen to visit society again in the near future.

The food here is really lovely - the hake with wasabi mayo is divine, with the pork belly being a very close second and the prawn starter is the perfect size and is downright mouth watering. I have never experienced a bad meal here, and the service is quick and efficient.
The venue is unassuming and exceeds all expectations.

Society is a hidden gem. We went the Saturday after New Year. The place was empty but still had a lovely vibe due to the deco. A must have is the G&T. It has elderflower and cardoman and was very refreshing. I had the chicken liver starter which comes with ciabatta. Only gripe is I got a meager 2 pieces of bread as did my friend with the mussels. However, the livers were delicious. My friends parmesan chicken bites were also good and very fresh. We had the ribeye burger main which was pretty good. I swiped a piece of my buddys wagyu burger. It had an overpowering amount of horseradish. Would order it again but ask for horesradish cream on the side. I've been told that the place gets busy but this should only add to the vibe. Will definitely visit again.

Beautify decorated place. Good service and their zucchini fries are truely to die for! I do however find the wine list to be a bit limited and quite pricy but if you don't mind paying for craft beer, this place has an awesome selection with yummy food boards for snacking.

Great spot in the fourways area. Nice place to grab a drink after work. We have always been happy going there and they have a good variety of food and drink.

Went for a dinner, was instantly impressed by the decor and there was also a really cool vibe..

Next time I'll try get a table outside, as inside can get a little loud! The G & T was unbelievable!! The food was good... Desert average.. But that was about the only complaint.
Society Eatery proved to be a revelation.... It exceeded all my expectations from the minute we walked in. The attentive service , fantastic cocktails and great food makes this venue a must do if you haven't been. Their starters, boards and mains all looked delectable but we we having cocktails and chose to have their starters and boards.
The calamari, pulled pork , bitterballen and chicken pops were all good but the star was the zucchini fries which where just delicious.
The starter and board portions were more than sufficient to share.
I've only 2 minor criticisms ... That being the slow service reheating to the food we ordered and the lack of vegetarian options. Sides do no constitute a meal.

Society may be situated in an unassuming little corner of Fourways but once you enter you will find a trendy gastropub eatery and bar. They have a wide selection of craft beers, cocktails and drinks – you MUST have the Society G&T – Bombay Sapphire Gin, Tonic water and a dash of elderflower with some cardomom – so refreshing for this December heat!

They have a wide selection of craft beers, cocktails and drinks – you MUST have the Society G&T – Bombay Sapphire Gin, Tonic water and a dash of elderflower with some cardomom – so refreshing for this December heat!

We couldn’t decide what to eat so ordered a few starters and boards. We had the zucchini fries, the mussels steamed in Society lager and served with ciabatta, rib eye meatballs in tomato based sauce, crispy prawns and the dish I was most eager to try: the char grilled lamb riblets served with an Asian dipping sauce.

I loved all the dishes! My favourites were the mussels in a delightful creamy sauce. The crispy peri peri prawns were divine and the clear winner were those riblets – oh man, I can’t wait to return to have some more of these!

After stuffing our faces, we still went on to desserts. We ordered the chocolate fondant and the trio of ice-creams. The chocolate fondant was perfection, with just the right amount of ooziness when you cut into it. The ice creams were a bit of a disappointment, the salted caramel ice cream was extremely salty and drowned out the caramel.

The service of the waiters at Society was great – they were attentive and friendly. I would highly recommend this eatery for meeting up with friends and family over a drink and good food!
Jadene Tager
The service here is seriously slow when they are packed with the average waiting time for a drink being about 20+ minutes. The food is pretty good though and well priced. We enjoyed the pulled pork tacos and the Society G&T is really refreshing.

This place have potential. Its a step up from your typical bar food but do not live up to its potential. The bittetballen was devine but if you want to dine here tapas style beware that its very oily. Decor is relaxed and simple yet elegant on its own way. Mabey a better hang out place than a dining experience
My colleagues and I came here for lunch today and discovered quite a gem of a restaurant.

Though the general vibe is that more of a drinking establishment, the food served is actually of quite high quality.

As I mentioned above, it being a drinking establishment, it wasn't too busy at all when we arrived just after noon. We were given a choice of where to sit and we chose to sit outside under the deck umbrella. The waiter took our drinks order and they were brought through shortly.

We decided to try a selection of starters to share among the 4 of us. We had the Asian Calamari, the charred lamb cutlets and the bittenballen. The calamari was outstanding especially with the Asian dressing. The lamb cutlets with the savoury-sweet dipping sauce was also very good. The ladies at the table didn't find the bittenballen up to scratch but my other colleague and I found that it was quite good. The beef was of the proper quality which was like shredded beef instead of mince and together with the mustard accompaniment made it quite scrumptious.

Our mains took a little longer than I expected it. However, when it eventually arrived, we were quite pleasantly surprised. I had the Pistachio-crusted salmon, the 2 ladies shared the deconstructed pulled pork and my other colleague had the lager-battered hake & chips. The salmon was done to the perfect doneness, just cooked through with touch of slight under-cooked in the middle, which I didn't mind at all. However, the crusting on the top came through a little too salty for my taste and I didn't get the taste of the pistachio as distinctly as it should. The noodles that accompanied the salmon was also lightly tossed with a sweet-savoury sauce. I tried some of the pulled pork and it was really tasty too. The wasabi and dill mayo matched the hake perfectly.

All in all, we all had a really good meal there. I understand from some other people I chat with that it was a really vibe-y place in the evenings with the drinking crowd. It is a great place to have the craft beers and also some amazing food.

Fantastic service
Joss the manager recommended the wagyu burger, fillet steak.
We were blown away by quality of food and superior service.
We will definitely be back!!
Tania Crain
We went to Society over a very busy time of end of year functions. The service was still attentive and thier famous zucchini fries and battered hake was great. The rosemary mayo that went with the zucchini fries was not over powering and complimented the zucchini well. Over all from previous experiences always an enjoyable and pleasant time.
Vicky Gross
Had a delicious lunch, the battered hake goujons. All the food looks incredible, was very hard to choose. Would definitely go back just so I can try something different. Highly recommend.
Cassandra Mudd
I'm not a beer drinker, I know that Society is know. For craft beers but I think that's about it. Not blown away by the menu. Drink selection is very limited, worst mojito ever made, had to send it back. It popular for the people who see and want to be seen. But not my scene.

Great restaurant with a wonderful outdoor deck, friendly staff and excellent food. We were staying in the area for a few days prior to starting a month long vacation in South Africa. Wr are here tree times in four days as we loved the atmosphere, food and people. Would highly recommend eating here if you are in the vicinity.

Great find that I'm shocked I didn't know about until Mpumi Guliwe made try it out!
The food was delicious, the location perfect and the vibe excellent. Will definitely be back

This place has an amazing after work Friday vibe! Service was very good despite large crowd. The food was the highlight!! Delicious starters of filet, deep fried zucchini, calamari to name a few. Great cocktails too. Only suggestion would be different music.. Bit of 80's for the older crowd, budda ta etc. Otherwise highly recommended.
Stacey Faber
Tapas and craft beer vibes. Enjoy the vibe her! Can sit inside and outside which is lovely. Food is good just a little pricey. I enjoy the pulled pork fritters
Jessica Moshanyana
The Raspberry Collins is absolutely lovely. Wish I stayed long enough to try out the menu, however that gives me an excellent reason visit the spot again!

I experienced fantastic service from everyone
Even without a reservation they made accomodation for us. Every waiter and manager took care of us and made sure we were well attended to. The food was delicious and I enjoyed everything. The wine was great too. Definitely reccommend it.

Sociery was well worth the wait-we have been waiting to try it for ages ans it came highly reccomended.Brett Stevens and i went for a date night and the indoor restuarant side was quiet with lovely decor, the outside deck is great if you want more of a vibe...
The dood was delicious. The pulled pork stack was so tasty and fresh and a huge portion for a starter and the salt&pepper calamari was perfectly cooked. We couldnt make our mind up for mains so ordered a Board incl. Periperi prawns onion rings and bitterballen, along with the grown up Sirloin
...all divine...only comment to make was the mustard was this huge bowl which was okay...we would have preferred a peri sauce option for the meat. All in all well worth the treat

I had heard great things about Society, I had seen the signs for it when it was being built too and finally got the chance to give it a try. The patio was packed with people creating a great vibe, we sat inside where there is great decor, very modern and open. The beer selection is fantastic, we couldn't make up our minds on what to drink or what to eat! It all looks fantastic! We went for the ginger beer and the CBC Amber weiss.. tasty! For starters we had salt & pepper calamari and stacked pulled pork, they were fantastic especially the pulled pork, perfectly put together. For mains we had a board with bitterballen and crispy prawns with a side of onion rings as well as the grown up sirloin. Man oh man it was all fantastic!!! Perfectly cooked perfectly seasoned and we tried our best to finish it all but we couldn't manage it. The food was fantastic, the staff are so friendly and helpful and it very reasonably priced. Will definitely recommend any of the dishes to anyone.

Kickass place with great vibe on a Friday night. Great menu of craft beer & craft ciders. We ordered a few appetisers, very different & interesting taste. Will be back.

Ordering for 2 will set you off by R250-350

The food here is incredible!🙌 Sorry about the bad photo, once I saw how good it looked there was no time to take a photo. (To be honest I forgot to take a photo😄) I ordered the calamari stater with the lemon mayo and it was really good, I just wish they would put more sauce in the already tiny bowl that they give you. I then had the deconstructed pulled pork, and it was amazing! It was cooked extremely well and presented well. The dish came with pulled pork, crackling, salsa and a sweet sauce (I don't know what it was made from, but in my opinion this with the pulled pork made the dish!) I do how ever have to problems with this dish, the first would be that I feel it needed more tortillas and that (once again) there was not enough sauce and salsa, there was enough crackling though. All in all an amazing meal that I would come back here to eat! My cousin Treflet Payet had the Fillet Suzette and it was (again) an amazing dish.👌 The service was not bad but how ever there was a big problem as my friend was hit in the head with an outdoor umbrella, by a waiter while packing up and even after she said something to him he did not bother to apologize.👎 The wait time after ordering food was surprisingly quick and the time spent waiting for drinks was not bad either. All in all not a bad time.👏 I would come back here for the food!👍

Perfect Sunday afternoon lunch. We opted for 4 starters and had an amazing taste sensation. Laid back and friendly staff and management. The manager was very attentive and made sure we were happy with the service. It's become one of my go to places for one of those long weekend lunches. Cant wait to get back there again with a group of friends.

It's the second time I've been here and certainly not the last. Awesome food, great ambience and good service. The menu is so different, the taste and presentation was outstanding. I would highly recommend Society.

Society is located in an unsuspecting mini shopping centre, but the look and vibe could not be more different than its surroundings. The craft beers are something special. We tried the Berry Cider, Dragonfly Ginger Beer, Apple Ale and a recommendation from the waiter that I can't remember. Really good and really boozy. On the food side, the asian riblets, calamari and mini pulled pork stacks were yummy. The chicken popsicles didn't do much flavour wise. Will definitely be back to experience the night vibe and more craft beers!

Great place for a first date!! Amazing food! Vibe is great and also some creative and delicious beer!! I would recommend this for anyone who either looking to have a fun filled night or just a chilled dinner with some friends & family! ... Going back ASAP!

Another craft beer location in the fourways area, we went there for my birthday on a Saturday at 1pm, unlike most of the new hip places we were able to book a tablet for our group, we arrived and were seat at our table outside, the vibe is very chilled and easy going, there are a great selection of craft beers, your usual ace and Jack black, they also have a very delicious Apple Ale brewed right here in JHB at thr Soweto brewery, it tastes like the green apple fizz pop, so tasty i had 5 of them lol, on to the food, well now that was a massive surprise, it was amazing tasted great looked great and was so so delicious, pricing is acceptable for the type of bar and the location so i think it was definitely value for money. I would highly recommend you pull in there and have a beer/cider and some chow, i also recommend it for a chilled laid-back Sunday outing with mates. Oh also service was on top forum we never need to call our waiter he was on point.
Sharri Van Zyl
A fun place however the food portions could be slightly bigger. I love the selection of craft beers and the wine glasses are epic! Food tastes good but it is very morish so they need bigger portions
Kavish Mistry
The place has an awesome vibe. Nice hang out spot! Lamb riblets are amazing! They have an awesome range of craft beers. Tucked away in a quiet centre. Definitely a hidden gem!

Fantastic atmosphere. The Zucchini Fries were yummy. After a few visits here I can definitely say this place has a fantastic vibe and great food. Will be coming back

Met up with my work crew for dinner. It was a great set-up with an awesome menu on offer. The drinks menu is great, I love craft beer so I'm more than chuffed when thats on offer.

I had charred lamb riblets on a board served with the most amazing sauce ever!! I forgot to ask what it was. Then I had some salad; the chorizo and calamari. I can't fault the food here, it was amazing. Great flavours.

It's only the service that was a downer. It was a bit slow, and it wasn't the busiest night...weekday even. Apart from that is a nice hangout for a laid-back drinks evening.

Late decision to have lunch on Sunday with friends at Society. Been before but only had a burger & beers. Weather was stunning and we were seated outside. Selection of Craft (and cider and lemonade) on tap is impressive.

Decided to order bitterballen to start while looking through the menu. Bitterballen is a Dutch delicacy normally made with veal but Society uses beef. Shaped like a meatball but with a crispy coating it is deep fried and served with mustard mayo. Was perfect and not greasy at all.

Two of us ordered the fillet with garlic black mushroom, butternut puree and smashed potato. Meat was cooked as ordered and my only complaint was that I wanted more potato. It was outstanding. One had the pistachio crusted salmon with stir fry veg instead of noodles and another ordered the spatchcock chicken with chips. I tasted the salmon and it was great, slightly overcooked but I'm not sure how it was ordered. I didn't taste the chicken but it looked good. I did taste the chips and they were crispy on the outside and soft inside, just the way they should be.

Overall we had a great time. Service waa good and I felt it was value for money. It's the northern suburbs so it's not cheap but it is reasonable. Will definitely recommend and visit again.
