Review Cheers Sushi - Johannesburg

Andre van Wyk
Ready, steady, GO. What fabulous meals we have here. The buffet is well worth it if you're a growing boy, however the price have now gone up from R189 to R219. We visited again today, 13 April, and seems like it is under new management again...not sure. However, the food is still good but still no liquor license so can't have my Chinese beer with my meal. 28 July '23 - Month end and they only have 2 waiters. It was madness. It took us forever to get served and get our food. We didn't get our tea as they only have two tea pots and didn'tbother to tell us. A Chinese restaurant with only two tea pots!! Our experience today sucked.

The sushi is very good and fresh. They have a great selection, and the service is quick. They don't serve alcohol but the food makes up for that. There is a fair buffet offer that we enjoyed. The tops here can use some upbeat music and decor but still a good eat. Would definitely recommend.

Nice, simple restaurant. The food was delicious 😊 Friendly and helpful waiter. The only negative was the speed of service and the food came when ready. So the cooked food came well before the sushi.
Leyla Balikci
The staff are very friendly, they make all the sushi you want. The buffet is good. The sushi is really good. The best I have tried by far. Thank you for your excellent sushi and service. Keep your sushi fresh.

Very pleased with our Sushi experience at Cheers Sushi. The food was excellent and there was so many different varieties that one would not find elsewhere. The sushi buffet clocks in at R190 and definitely worth it! They are not shy to load the sushi pieces with extra fish. Would definitely come again!

Lol I don't do sushi but my daughter and son-in-law do. They die for Cheers. I have other foods on the menu and can tell you everything is wonderful. Great atmosphere. Super place. We go all the time. If you haven't been yet just do it. You'll luv it.

Honestly the best Sushi place I have come across, the All you can eat special is a favourite amongst my family and I. and the food is always delicious and service is always superb. Can't recommend Cheers Sushi enough!

Stopped here for a quick solo lunch. What a find. Amazing sushi 🍣 very friendly and helpful staff. Food was fresh and divine. Also had great buy 1 get 1 free options and a VERY affordable all you can eat buffet. 😀

I often come here for my sushi fix. It is amazing and well prepared. Cheers offers an all you can eat special for around R165 which offers a huge variety. Especially one portion of one of their most expensive plates which includes salmon roses and sashimi. Cheers also has a unique twist with their soy sauce which is sweeter than usual, but extremely tasty. The soy sauce alone keeps me and my friends coming back. Make sure to try out their tempura prawn California rolls, hand rolls, and tofu battleship for the vegetarians. I haven't had much experience with their meals other than sushi. However, I have tasted their chicken cashew nut and it's definitely worth the try! Only downsidea include, like most restaurants I have been to that serve this cuisine, the service is usually lacking. The seating arrangements are also slightly awkward, but definitely not enough to keep me away.

Really good sushi buffet! Was happy with everything and the wife loved it too! Was a little worried when we were the only ones there but by the time we left it was filling up nicely!

Highly recommend , some of the best Sushi I have had in a long time , The staff are friendly and service is of a high level , keep it up guys!. Only detraction is they don't serve alcohol in the restaurant.

The sushi 🍣 was amazing..... I loved every bite. I will definitely go back soon.

A really cute sushi joint. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful. The sushi is well priced, neatly put together and great tasting. Dumplings were okay. The place is well "put together" - great, relaxed ambience. Worth a visit :)

Ordered through Mr delivery... however some of the best sushi I've eaten in the country
Cami G
Great Prices! Tasty food! Great portion sizes! Friendly staff! I WILL BE BACK
Patrick Wiggett
Simply the best sushi I have ever had. The all-you-can-eat buffet is amazing with no limit on plate color and excellent value for money.
Cindy Rushka Knoesen
Great fresh food. Vibing. Friendly staff. A little slow but otherwise fantastic and delicious.

Always get amazing quality and service. Stanley is a star!!

We waited ages for our very simple order of california rolls. They were COATED in sesame seeds, which made it all we could taste, and the prawn tempura was super chewy- not fresh? Won't be going back. Honestly the worst sushi I've had.
Mohamed Cara
Delicious sushi with great variety. Only downside is less than eager waiters who don't bother to check if you need anything. But overall satisfactory.
O-Mizu Satori
The sushi we ordered was of good standard and receipt upon placing the order was fast, as the chefs know what they are doing. The service from the waiters however was tardy and they are unattentive. Value for money though I'd say.

Came through on a wet Saturday afternoon,

Opted for the all you can eat deal, and claimed a seat at the belt.

Service was a little below average even with there being only 4 patrons in the restaurant and 6 service staff... weather I guess.. waiter could have been a bit more attentive.

One strange thing was one of the gentlemen preparing the sushi had earphones in and was chatting away on a phone call...professional?

Sushi on the belt was acceptable with a few varieties on offer.. the rice was ok but lacked a bit of seasoning and could of done with a hint more vinegar to make it great.

Ps. Toasted sesame seeds go a long way... not always everyone's cup of tea.

Decor and atmosphere where ok, a little dated and could do with a touch up and seemed a bit cliche for what it is

Tyla
Very good sushi, fresh and well made. The sushi chef made more sushi constantly filling up what was on offer. Definitely worth the R169 for all you can eat! Definitely be going back

honestly some of the best sushi I've ever had in Joburg. some combinations and styles that I've never seen anywhere else! Service was good, but slightly slow! Music needs to be looked at, was like a 14 year old Pop party inside! other than that definitely worth going back, especially for the buffet! Highly recommended

I got food poisoning. Very disappointed. The sushi was average and the service was okay. Im still sick can't even keep water down. Maybe they don't use fresh fish.
Gerlind
Really nice selection of sushi with a reasonable price for an eat as much as you like option. Service tends to be a bit slow but perfect when you go off-peak.
Nicole Kayley Langsford
Love the sushi at Cheers! We eat here all the time. We tend to always go for the sushi buffet so haven’t really tried any of the other dishes. Great value for money. The waiters are very friendly, the owner can be a little abrupt sometimes. The decor is questionable but the food makes up for it.

The first time I went to Cheers Sushi was for a quick lunch. I had never been there before. There was no electricity on the day, but we still got served. The service was super slow though. Waited quite long to receive our orders (and we were the only people there). We weren't in a rush, but we were quite hungry. The sushi was good. I enjoyed it a lot. In fact, for the affordable price their sushi was quality. The place is modern looking and clean. Hated the chairs though. They weren't comfortable at all!

Recently I was thinking of what to have for dinner and decided to go back for a takeaway. I called to make my order. I wasn't in the mood to wait. I initially asked for the mushrooms bamboo shoot pork, but the lady on the phone was clueless as to what it was even though it was on the menu. Just realised this menu on Zomato is outdated. They need to update. I ended ordering the pork chow fan, which was really good. They don't add salt in their rice, which wasn't an issue for me as I can add my own salt. Some restaurants put way too much salt! I also got salmon maki and tuna California roll, which were really fresh and tasty. The takeaway was also neatly packed. I've had sushi takeaway were the sushi is a muddled mess by the time I get home. When I went to pick up the place was empty like on my first experience. I wonder why that's the case.

Overall, they have good food. They could work on their service. I will definitely be coming back to try other things on the menu.

I wish I took photos, but the food was always devoured by a pack of hyenas:-).

We have had sushi from here a few times, it is always fresh and delicious! We always eat more than we should!

The service is good

Atmosphere: The restaurant could make more of an effort with regards to creating a better mood with music. The music needs tweaking, but the sushi really is good.
Fifi Omar
For such a cozy restaurant, it has cute decor and it's own restroom. Generous buffet and they have the best fashion sandwiches. The staff are friendly and helpful!
Gio
The sushi is pretty average but falls short on variety for the buffet.
If you dont mind the odd fly in your sushi or cockroaches freely walking around while you eating, unless that all makes for part of the cuisine or asian experience, that is up to you.
Personallly, food was ok, value for money very poor.
Not sure I would be desperate enough to revisit, unless for the entertainment value of watching patrons as they discover these free asian delicacies of flies and cockroaches as part of their experience.
Lastly, the waiters may just as well not be there, they are totally useless and uneffective.

Gio
Nadine Rossouw
Menu loaded on Zomato is outdated. Prices increased. Buffet is now R169. Please give them a call before driving there all the way thinking that their prices are the same as the menu.

Ordered take away sushi on our anniversary weekend away and was pleasantly surprised with great sushi at a very affordable price! Friendly service as well! Thanks Cheers Sushi 🍣 We will definitely be visiting again!
Jessica Richards
Waited 20 minutes longer than advised on the phone for my take away. Staff were overwhelmed even though the restaurant was only 50% full. No visible manager. Veg spring rolls were cold and the ratio of veg to pastry was about 1 to 10 - see photo. And the sushi made me ill. Literally. An hour after my meal I was sick and brought it all up. Needless to say I won't be eating at this establishment again!
Sabrina
Quality of food as well as the waitresses are good. Unfortunately, the owner is horrible to staff and customers. When trying to explain ourselves he did not let us speak and spoke down to both us and the waitress.
Owner has no understanding of customer service.
Daniëlla Van Heerden
Updated my previous review:
Food is still good, but our service this time was sadly appalling.
Waitress did not come to our table once after greeting us, I had to go to her about 5 times to order.
It was a quiet Friday night and by 8.45 (they close at 9.30) we were about halfway with our meal, but were the last clients in the restaurant. We very clearly got the idea the waiters want us to leave so they can pack up and go. Waitress audibly gave a loud sigh when we wanted to order more sushi, and it wasn’t even 9pm yet. Felt so unwelcome and rather just left.

Previous review:
Very reasonable prices and the sushi tastes great. Service was fast and friendly. Their buffet option is a bargain and this will now be my go-to sushi spot.

It is fresh and so authentically delicious. Every day is R156 buffet special. My favorite is the salmon skin hand roll for only R23 - keep it up guys!
Kim Robertson
Food is good. Price is good. We have gone to cheers for years now weekly. Am yet to be greeted by the owner and co-chef. Very off putting. Desperately seeking a different sushi bar who appreciate their customers and support
Candice Korb
Great sushi and vibe is nice..we had the all you can eat sushi buffet..Very reasonable prices.. my only complaint is the ladies bathroom - needs some work. Overall I would recommend..definitely a hidden gem!!
Tegwen Winkler
Good sushi at a great price! Always has a good vibe and the staff are friendly. We often get takeaways and the wait is usually a little longer than 20mins. Other than that I highly recommend it.
Mark Smith
Very nice sushi at a very reasonable price. R23 for a very very tasty and nicely presented salmon hand roll. Enjoyed the decor and ambience too.
Victoria Modise
Second time trying the sushi buffet. The price is now R156 per person. The sushi was fresh and tasty but waited quite a while for new options to be loaded onto the conveyor belt. Having said that, the option to get spring rolls and bowties off the conveyor belt too is very nice.
Kaylyn
I get it's Valentine's Day but isn't that a hint that you should be well prepared? I often come to this place - they have the best sushi and at a great price, but tonight I was disappointed - staff ran around like headless chickens and sushi did not come on the conveyor belt for 45 minutes. They should have been better prepared and had a few more staff knowing it was going to be a busy night.
Lois Qutob
Cheers is definitely a little hidden treasure. Modern sleek tables and metal chopsticks give an urban feel. The food is good quality and service is average to good. Pricing isn't bad for what you're getting. My favourite are the prawn tempura California rolls. I'll be there again soon :)
Corne Ackermann
Just had some awesome sushi. Had the R156 buffet which include a few unique options from the menu. The battleships are a must. There is a good variety and the normal price is reasonable. Other food and drinks are also available . Had some decent music in background. Waiters helped when requested. Good value for money. Buffet is available evetday.

Hidden away a bit on the 2nd floor of the centre. Very good value for money sushi. Would recommend going on Monday nights for the special. Always a good selection on the turn table.
Nseula Chili Chilikhuma
Good quality, tasty and reasonably priced. Happy customer. I ordered a simple Maki Salmon plate and it tasted phenomenonal and I can't flaw it
Santisha
Good sushi, reasonably priced, fresh ingredients, and absolutely delicious! I've been there twice this week and will definitely be back. Really worth a try :)

Food 5/5
Service 4/5
Ambience 3/5
Craig
A bit far out from our usual spots, but had heard great things. Truly lived up to the positive reviews. Sushi was fresh, and very well priced. Thai green curry not the greatest, but the chicken cashew kicks nuts! The sushi is the best.
Tammy Thomas
Ordered from Mr Delivery. Best cashew chicken ever!!! The spring rolls were not great but the cashew chicken was amazing! Would have rated them a 5 if the spring rolls had been better.
Julian Venter
Wanted to try an alternative to Sakura. They need to maintain the decor a bit better but the food and service was great and well priced.

I have found my new sushi hole.
Jack & Jill
Went there for lunch, we needed a sushi fix.

The place is simplistic and the obvious middle island conveyor belt with sushi is the center piece but there are tables and chairs as well. I found the seating at the table rather awkward and strange the chairs are corner angled.

Hmmm not sure how I feel about the food. I found the sushi rather bland and disappointing. We had the everyday special which is eat as much as you like for R135 p/p. But excludes the more popular or rather the better sushi like salmon roses which we ordered separately. It does however include spring rolls and even tempura California rolls. So it's a good deal if you are hungry.

We have had better sushi I'm afraid.

Why do restaurants/eateries have specialized beers on their menu but NEVER have them!

The service was ok but our waiter battled to understand English and offered us the prawn tempura California rolls after we finished eating.
But he was trying hard to give us good service.

🙂🙂😏 - ambience
🙂🙂😏 - service
😕😕😏 - food
@MzansiGirl
Cheap and cheerful sushi and nice decor. They have a range of Chinese and Thai dishes too which I didn't get to taste. Service was good with plenty of choice on the sushi train.
Lauras World
This little spot in the Mountain View Shopping Centre is a no-frills, conveyor belt sushi spot that pleasantly surprised me - both with its prices and the quality of their sushi.

As we sat down, I realised that there was music coming from two different areas of the restaurant (different music), which was a little confusing coupled with the chinese soaps screening on the television, but the interiors were clean, the staff were attentive and I quite like the stripy wallpaper.

My only query would be the small size of their hand rolls, but at least they were not filled with just rice (as a lot of sushi spots do these days).

*Recommendation: Decent sushi - good prices and quick service in this tucked away Northcliff offering.
Aless
My favourite sushi restaurant! It is always a pleasure eating here, with a constant stream of fresh sushi as well as friendly and helpful staff. A wonderful experience with great food. Well done Cheers!
Maria De La Guerre
Sushi always good, my favorite sushi spot!! They even give extra ginger on request which is a big selling point.
The food is always fresh and never taste old and service is also friendly!

Kyle
I personally like to eat a lot of sushi so a sushi buffet is great for me. Cheers sushi has a sushi buffet for R135 and the sushi is small, tasty and delicious. The sushi potions is very good and they are not shy with the salmon as some sushi buffet places are. Very welcoming feel as the sushi chefs connect with the people and are very friendly. Definitely the best buffet sushi ive had in Johannesburg.
Jon Gericke
My favourite Sushi spot in Northcliff and surrounds. So much so that I get personal greeting when walking in.

Every day has an eat-as-much-as-you-want special that is very well priced and has only one T&C. I dislike places where you need a special degree in costing to work out what you can and cannot eat.

The restaurant is mostly full all the time and is certainly a spot worth going to.
Ask for the Salmon skin. It's a secret!!
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
Fresh, fast sushi and friendly, basic service. The restaurant has a constant stream of customers and the prices are good. They also offer a good "all you can eat" special.
DD
Been coming here for a few months now, and it honestly just gets better. Definitely my go-to for Sushi. Best thing is that the quality sushi is really affordable.
Ted De Boer
Nothing to fancy in terms of location and decor, although most gems hide out where you'd least expect them.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Sushi is of good quality and any orders we had besides the items on the conveyor were made and served quickly, as were the drinks and bill. Not a spectacular spot, but definitely worth a try if you're into sushi (-buffets). We will be coming back to try out the other dishes on the menu for sure.

Really divine sushi. My lil hidden sushi spot Was craving it tonight. Got their spicy tuna callifornia rolls which were divine and really spicy and prawn tempura callifornia rolls.not too much rice and full of ingredients, which is a must in good sushi. Their dumping had to be the best iv tasted in a long time and full if flavour. Only thing is its small sushi. But deli

Remember that stuffed animal you carried around when you were a kid? Then you became a teenager and if your parents ever told your friends that you still slept with a toy you would die of embarrassment but you absolutely loved it? Well Cheers is like that for me. Purists scoff when I say I have my best sushi here every Monday. So it's not one of the popular choices and its kind of out of the way but you can be certain of fresh sashimi, decent sav blanc and smiling staff.
Mondays eat as much as you like does see the place rather tightly packed but even when I have been the only patron I have always enjoyed my salmon sashimi. Oh and my better half has sampled other items..apparently just as appetising, I haven't made it past the revolving sushi bar...
Ilinda Du Preez
What a nice surprise. Stumbled onto this sushi bar, not situated in nice spot,no real footfall. Service was not great, but the sushi was fresh. The dumplings were delicious with a interesting fresh sharp dipping sauce. Praen tempura was a decent size just needed a bit of salt. A definite revisit for me.
Mikayla Jo Birkholtz
Our favourite sushi place. Good prices and specials and they are very quick. Monday's are a bit busy with their all you can eat and but one get one free specials, so get there early. Salmon house is a must! Some of the waiters aren't very good, but it doesn't deter us.

Great sushi, friendly staff and I love that they play music you can listen to and understand lol. Sure you get more authentic setups, but this works just fine
