Best place ever. The food was great! The service was awesome. was not bothered the whole time by waiters, but they were always there when needed. Definitely on my list of top 5 restaurants..
Awesome food at fantastic value for money . Service is excellent considering that the restaurant is really packed ( Sunday lunch ) . You have to wait a while for your food but the wait is really worth it.

What a lovely evening. We called late on a Friday afternoon and asked for a table for 2 and were happily accommodated. The crowd consisted of families, couples and mixed groups.
The owner helped us select a Portuguese wine from the menu and the waiters were attentive and friendly.
My partner chose the oxtail and I had the chicken and prawn special, both excellent choices. We had the pasteis de nata for dessert - mouth watering!

It all started as my girlfriend and I sat down and our friendly waiter Melusi brought us the complimentary snacking bread, accompanied by some of the inhouse peri-peri sauce. Hungry as we were, we spread some on the fresh bread with butter and immediately loved the unique taste. Just the right amount of bite, with a rich and zesty flavour to boot.
But this was only the beginning, and we had no idea that we were about to have what we both deem to be the best meal we've ever had. This is no idle praise, as I love food of all kinds, and my girlfriend is admittedly fussy about restaurant food.
For starters, she opted for the prawn pastries (risolles) and I chose the traditional chouriço. We decided to each have a taste of each other's orders. The risolles were mouthwatering, and replete with flavour and texture. And the chouriço was brought to the table still flaming with ignited brandy. Needless to say, it was delicious too. Simple, but full of flavour.
For our main courses, I decided to go with a tried and test favourite of mine, Chicken Trinchado. And my girlfriend wanted to try something new, so she chose one of the house specialties: Porco Com Ameijoa, a traditional dish comprising potatoes, pork and clams in a garlic and wine sauce.
These main courses were hands down the most hearty, rich and delicious dishes we've ever had. My girlfriend does not usually eat pork, but even she loved the balance of flavours in her dish. The meat was tender and perfectly cook in both mains. And the Trinchado sauce was mind blowing.
Throughout the meal, we savoured each bite, and admired the warm and cozy decor of the quaint venue, noting that the colours and ambience felt hearty and welcoming, with the dishes matching that atmosphere and elevating it to altogether new levels.
After the meal, we waited a bit, still awestruck by the food we had, and how it made for such an amazing date night. Then, we capped our evening with dessert. She chose one of her favourites, chocolate mousse, and I decided to go for the almond tart. The desserts were delicious too, and along with a little caffeine on the side, a perfect end to a lovely evening.
We left the restaurant happy and extremely impressed. And we definitely plan on going there again.
A stunning, authentic Portuguese restaurant, with hands-on owners/managers and friendly staff! Our food took quite a while to arrive, hence the 4 stars, but everything else was wonderful, especially the food.
I had trout, which was amazing! Others in my group had potato and leek soup, prawns, calamari, and chicken livers. Everyone loved their food! I'll definitely be back!
This place was awesome! After being recommended time and time again, I finally made a visit with my family. We were greeted at the door by (I presume) the owner, who was friendly and charming. Our drinks orders arrived very quickly, and the sangria was absolutely fantastic. We ordered our food, which took quite a while to arrive (hence why I have only given 4 stars), but it was worth the wait. Everyone commented on how delicious their meals were. My grilled calamari was divine! The small restaurant had a lovely, cosy ambiance. The staff were friendly and attentive.

The food had punches of flavour, and each dihs' ingredients were fresh and vibrant. We could not find fault in any of the dishes we had and we ordered half the menu! An authentic Portuguese restaurant that would make the bovis proud!
Manny and Paula, you just keep on and on doing the best food in Joburg, There are not many restaurants that consistently produce this quality of food around, My wife and I have been guests at their restaurants since they started in Blairgowrie many years ago and since then the quality has never changed. The new venue in Hyde Park is great, spacious, well planned and laid out. I hope Paula has a bit more space in the kitchen than she used to have in Ferndale. I'm not going to pick out individual items from the menu and comment on them, because, my wife and I have had just about everything on their menu with never a poor meal and this also includes the specials on the chalk board. I wish you both very well in your new venue and hope to be able to return for many, many years to come.
Been coming to 1920 for 4 years now, we discovered this gem by pure chance one evening while looking for some new places to try. We were blown away by the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff and Manny. The quality has stayed the same and in some cases gotten better over the years. Their prawns nacionale and 1920 espetada is devine. Those are our favourite dishes when visiting there. Beer and wine selections are great with authentic Portuguese and Mozambiquan names. A must go to if you enjoy down to earth quality Portuguese / Madeiran style foods.
We had high expectations and were a little disappointed. Waited quite long for someone to seat us and then waited very long again for someone to serve us. At first we were served old bread and another waitress saw it and came to swop it for fresh warm bread. The peri-peri chicken was disappointing (dry and strangely cut...not sure we had 1/2 chicken...) however the grilled prawns and rump espetada were excellent.
Decor is really authentic Portuguese and the vibe is good.
We will probably not come back but if we do, we will not have the chicken and stick to prawns and espetadas... and hope for better service.
