Review Foo Wah - Johannesburg

Awesome Chinese dining experience with great food, friendly service, and a unique atmosphere.

Staff are always so friendly, extremely helpful and make every effort to accommodate special requests, even when it's a bit inconvenient. Food is always fantastic, never once had a bad experience here in the 30 odd years I've been a customer. Portions are very generous and to top it all off, they are one of the very, VERY few restaurants whose food arrives hot and fresh via delivery, even if there's a delay. Ingredient quality is top notch. Absolutely recommend!

I bought takeaways, and the food was great. We had soup, a vegetable spring roll, Shanghai steak with rice, and chicken chop suey. It was all great!

Have enjoyed Foo Wah over many, many years. Their food and service is truly lovely. They make you feel like family. Highly recommended.

My wife and I both settled for the set dinner menus - Chicken Soup, Deep-fried Prawns, Pork and Beef finished off with bowtie and tea The food was excellent and the owner was very hands on, visiting each table checking that everyone was happy/satisfied

This is the OG of Chinese food in the south. This place has been serving good food for over 30 years. That says something about their quality. Same menu same food always return to get good food.

I am so full and happy I am going to bed. Proper quality food at a proper reasonable price. Just wish I would eat less when I visit.

Amazing food, exceptional service. Thank you to staff at Foo Wah for an awesome afternoon. Absolutely loved the lime milkshake 😁

I was told this was the best Chinese restaurant in the world. They could be right. Take for example the spring rolls, not only is the roll itself crispy but the vegetables inside are also crispy. Rest of the meal was superb, highly recommended great service and friendly staff.

Love the food been there forever my only Chinese place for food

Foo Wah has had the same old school staff that's been there for years. This familiar faces was nostalgic, so I have 1 star. Another 1 star for the food I enjoyed - special fried rice with beansprouts and the chicken sweetcorn soup. Here's what I reduced the stars off my review for: Sweet and Sour pork was extremely vinegary. It basically consists of pork and sauce. Another favorite establishment I enjoy sweet and sour pork from adds pineapple, carrots, peas - not just 15 pieces of pork with sauce for R70 and then this amount doesn't even include rice or noodles standard with the dish - these are considered add on's. Kinda wish I went for the set menu actually

4 1/2 stars from me. My favourite Chinese restaurant. The food is always excellent and I love the set menu. I often go with the intention of trying something else but the set menu always wins me over. It’s always busy and it’s best to book.

I love this little Chinese restaurant, it’s one of my favourites , I love their food and highly recommend the sweet and sour pork and fried kinglip .

You can't go wrong with Foo Wah if you're in the mood for Chinese. Had the Set Menu where you to try a whole lot of food from chicken and egg soup, chicken chow mein, sweet and sour pork to bow-ties and green tea. Love their Chinese food - always delicious. Had a table of about 20 people and they managed it well. Sweet and Sour Pork is an absolute winner!

Service is amazing if a little robotic, food though is awesome best Chinese food I've had in jhb. My favourite is the sweet and sour pork noodle.

This is a great no-nonsense Chinese food place. The decor is dated, but it sorta adds to the overall ambiance. The food is consistently very good and the staff very friendly. Good value for money.

As far as service and management goes, I think most restaurants could take a page out of their book here. The most friendly and accommodating servers and management and this alone makes the overall experience pleasant.
As for the food sometimes it's perfectly cooked and packed full of flavor however it's not always consistent.
This doesn't take away or make the food any less enjoyable on a good day.
I've been going to Foo Wah since I could remember and I have never been disappointed with their food. Whether it be takeaway or sitting down, their food is always consistent and amazing. I absolutely love their sweet and sour chicken, definitely the best I've ever had. It's not just the food that is amazing, the staff is super welcoming and friendly and you always feel welcome and at home.

Still one of the best in Jhb. And the only Chinese food you can get with a little bit of chilli heat (Sze-Tseun style) Fantastic service every time

One of my old favorite Chinese take aways. I grew up with Foo Wah as one of our regular take away choices. The decor remains unchanged, but this adds to the whole experience of the evening. The food has always been the same- somehow this is comforting knowing that you can always rely on coming here and knowing exactly what you are going to get. I had the vegetable chow mein and a vegetable spring roll. The food was fresh and delicious. The spring roll wasn't greasy at all. I also had a bow tie for dessert- this was delicious, not too sweet.

All time favourite Chinese restaurant! Old school authentic decor, music and family owned. You gotta love Erik the friendly manager who has been there for years . Whether it's for take aways, which are so popular you need to order before hunger sets in and changes you into a hangry foodie, or eat in you won't be dissapointed. If you plan to eat there be sure to make a booking. Favourites include the jam packed gigantic crispy spring rolls any one, chicken is my favourite, the chicken beansprout soup. If u are eating in the their specialities are a must, the chicken sze-tuen style that comes on a hot plate, sizzling in its sweet and sour sauce. Another favourite is the beef sze-tuen style - tomato based sauce. The sauce is delicious and the beef simply mouth in your tender. Order both with a side of noodles and you will leave simply happy go lucky with a tummy full of flavour! Fair value for money and delicious. #cheekychineasemust

So last night we decided to go back to Foo Wah for what used to be the best Chinese in the South. I was pleased to find that nothing has changed. The decor and furniture is dated but authentic and creates real atmosphere while the food is great. Once the meal is served the first thing that's comes to mind is that the portions are so big that the meal could have been shared by 2 people. Value for money gets a 10/10 from me. A fun night out with friendly staff and good food.

A real little gem in the south. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing. Wonderful, friendly service and very affordable. This place is consistently good. It's great for a sit down meal or a take away.

Cheap and cheerful Chinese that will put a smile on your face. Always grab a takeaway and haven't sat down but it's consistent and good value
Lebo_malbie
Had chicken chow mei and cashew nuts beef for takeaway, the food was really delicious. I recommend it if you want to try something different and affordable.

Being new to the South of Johannesburg we were scouting for a restaurant who offers great Chinese food. Since we first tried Foo Wah we have not wanted to go anywhere else. Great food and great service, thanks.

That comfort place just down the road when you don't want to cook but want good tasting dinner, that is Foo Wah, the decor hasn't been changed in years the lighting is dark but adds to the wonderful experience, the host always has a smile and is alway helpful, our waiter was superb this last visit steering us to the best dishes for us, portion sizes are good and we always order a variety and have a take away, freshly made dishes make this food tasty. If your looking for satisfying food at affordable prices this is it. We enjoy it there and will continue to do so.

A way below average Chinese restaurant, the dining area is dark, tables and chairs were filthy as well as the dusty cutlery. Food was tasteless although I was probably put off by the filth of the restaurant. Pity because the service is quite good

Venturing out to the famous Chinese restaurant to taste if their food is as good as it used to be. The restaurant is situated just off the highway, and the interior is not well lit. The chairs are as old as time and uncomfortable to sit in. Strangely, this adds to the experience. Authenticity is what you should go for. Try the sweet and sour chicken or pork, which makes your taste buds jingle with adventure. The cashew nut chicken is a second best with more veggies and a milder taste. Service is fast and friendly.

Best Chinese take away and sit down place. Owner knows us by now and my sister had her reception here. Food portions are huge when eating in. Love the soup and the spring rolls as starters. I personally get the special fried rice with chicken and prawns with sweet and sour sauce which is always on point. The bow ties are brilliant if you crave some sweet dessert too. I'm a regular :)

I love Chinese food and I'm very picky with what I want because I've been to a few Chinese restaurants in my day to know what to expect. Foo Wah wasn't up to standard. The service was good, the deco was good and the overall ambience of the restaurant itself was good but the food wasn't. We ordered sweet and sour pork, Chow Mein and curry beef. The only thing that tasted fairly good was the curry beef. I won't be going back.

I must say , I was so surprised as to what a magical place Foo Wah is . The decor made me feel like I was on a movie set . The food was absolutely divine . I throughly enjoyed my salmon boat platter . This is one place that is a hidden gem .

If you looking for a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy GREAT Chinese cuisine, good friendly service and VERY good prices try Foot Wah. I had the dinner menu, my wife had cashew nut fried prawns, we ordered 3 glasses of 🍷 plus a bowl of prawn crisps our bill came to R243,00 plus the tip. It was yummmmmmmy.

Pity I couldn't give this restaurant a rating of zero, if health and hygiene is important to you stay far away from this cockaroach den, if you don't believe me simply pay close attention to the walls and floors a flash light will reveal all that needs to be seen in the dark and dingy seating area.

This really is a landmark in Jozi South. They have been consistently good over the years, no wonder you need to book waaay in advance for weekend dinners.

I've visited Foo Wah on and off for a good couple of years now and even though I don't live near it still make the trip out - it is totally worth it. The food is fresh, generously portioned, well priced and simply delicious. Gourmet food this is not but really good Chinese it is!

I can't recall visiting Foo Wah and the place being quite whether it be a week night or a weekend which only shows that people love it and keep coming back (from far and wide) for more.

I've even done trips for takeaways from Joburg North - it's that good compared to your run of the mill Chinese place.

We went to Foo Wah on Friday evening for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised by our experience!!! Normally we get take aways but thought we would do something different this time. The restaurant was pretty full so make a reservation.
The decor is very Chinese, and even though I wasn't the biggest fan of their patterned everything, I found that it all added to the good experience.
We had the set menu which I thought was really decently priced and had a nice variety of dishes included. The crispy prawns are divine and the sweet and sour pork is the best!!! I've always had their sweet and sour pork with noodles when ordering take away from here, and I've never been disappointed!!
The only negative is that the bow tie wasn't good at all. It wasn't crispy and had a strange taste which I didn't like at all!!! They just weren't the bow ties we all know.
The service was good and I will definitely go back again. I just really hope their bow ties improve by then!!!

My family and I had Foo Wah for dinner on Friday and we were very pleased. The food is delicious, the portions are generous and the prices are pretty decent as well. The resturant itself is very Chinese, including the staff, which is great for a Chinese food resturant. They give you a true taste of China, from food,to decor, to the staff. A delight of a resturant that has been around for years.

It's the one and only Chinese Restaurant my family and I keep going back to . Non compare , we love the environment and atmosphere of the place . We will always go back . Love it !!

By far the absolute best Chinese in Joburg. Consistently excellent food, a charming atmosphere. Aways very busy, bookings are essential. Five-course set menu (lunch or dinner) is the best way to go, but starve yourself beforehand.

Best chinese restaurant in the south of johannesburg for a very long time. Eric has run the place for years and kept up great hospitality and friendships. Well done foo wah! Thumbs up every time. Regards kylie and richard white

Our family favourite, the food never disappoints and is consistently great! The people are friendly, service is efficient and portions are perfect.

As a family, we have been enjoying the unique oriental ambience and carefully prepared fresh food at Foo Wah for at least fifteen years. This restaurant has it all when it comes to atmosphere for a romantic candle lit dinner, or for that special family celebration. However, as with most restaurants, it is necessary to be well informed as to which dishes to order and on this score I can only recommend their highly original and totally delicious sizzling dishes, these come in all main menu varieties including seafood, beef and chicken (a surprise is their vegetable version which is a superb option for vegetarians )
They are very reasonably price and I think their longevity is a testament to their superior cuisine and smart, dedicated service.

I really enjoy the freshness of the chow mein and the quality of their other food. Service is lacking. The old man and woman is very friendly. The daughter, however, is always miserable and rude.

1 hour after meal was done, waiting for the bill to arrive. Waitress passed the table continuously saying she would be with us.

phone just ringing!! it's a shame as we wanted to book a large table!

Usually when you think of Chinese you think of a take away joint. This is what Foo-Wah is not. I'm pretty sure that Foo-Wah couldn't become a heritage site for Jhb south because for a long time it was basically the only Chinese restaurant that stayed open.

Foo Wah provides you with the ambience and atmosphere to sit down and enjoy a good Chinese meal. Once you step inside you get the immediate sense that you are in a Chinese restaurant (and no I don't mean dark and dingy) but the restaurant has an oriental feel.

Their food is good and their menu has the usual suspects - it is however, in my opinion, not the best Chinese in Jhb (check out Fishermans Plate) but they are consistently good. They have good set menus and their sizzling dishes are fantastic and extremely popular.

With their consistency in good flavours and the only sit down Chinese restaurant for miles they are always full so be sure to make a booking. Take aways can take a while and you can sometimes take forever to get your call answered.

Best place in south of Jhb to get Chinese food, quite little place
but has great set menues and lovely food.
great for take out.
