Review Father Coffee - Johannesburg

Heath Pascal
First time visiting South Africa. And during my stay I meet a someone who was giving me suggests of things to do. And it was suggest that Father coffee makes the best coffee in the country. Strong and smooth coffee beverages with a friendly staff. Location in a small section on the block, perfect setting for a coffee break.
Jess Roussos
Good coffee, the menu looked great although I didn't eat - lots of good breakfast options, sandwich type things and sweet treats. The atmosphere is nice if a bit small - benches and tables. It's quite good for meetings if a bit loud at times.
Nishanth Parus
Feel free to ask them for recommendations on new blends. Just been there today and was surprised by the new offerings. I've been taking their Heirloom blend for the longest time (and love it) but I've been pleasantly surprise by the Konga Party offering. Its Ethiopian (Yirgacfeffe). Brewed it this afternoon and its great. Go ahead - Try something different man, Maybe you'll love it!

I spent less than 5 minutes at the spot and I instantly reviewed my approach to Customer Service. I'm usually a hasty person but being there calmed me down without being told to. Really thankful to have had such an experience.
Robert Uys
Trendy crowd and place. Right in the centre of things. Conveniently close to The Orbit Jazz Lounge, the Stevenson Gallery and the Kalashnikov Art Gallery. Fantastic coffee - some of the best in Johannesburg.

This is theee best place to chill and enjoy your coffee. If you are a coffee lover, this place is the one for you. The people that work here are amazing. The service is so amazing.
Daniel Hewett
Maybe there’s a better coffee to be found in SA but not in my experience. From the impeccable service to the perfectly consistent delivery, every cup has been fantastic.
Nsovo Will Mashaba
Most coffee spots in Braamfontein never seem to disappoint and Father Coffee is one of them...Your day won't go wrong after a cup of Java from there
James Delaney
Clean styling, hip crowd, urban setting, one of the city's best coffee brewers. The only place I know that makes a Gibraltar.
Paul Crowley
Best Iced Coffee ever!
shaun sutherland
Great coffee ☕️. These people take it seriously. The barrister even removes the coffee baskets and weights each coffee individually with a smile 😀
Kirill Zubovsky
Lovely peaceful coffee shop with great coffee. Definitely will come again!
Jean-Patrick Fays
Great place and great coffee. Welcoming coffee shop in a good location in Jozy. Located next to the neighbours market.
Mykel Addison
Great service! Great Coffee! Could use a deeper menu.
Ayanda Njanya
Pleasant staff and best coffee in town.
Adrian Naidoo
Great coffee... Good music... Good for a quick meeting
ian nettleton
Great coffee. Need a fan too many flies
Hamza Van der Ross
Best coffee in town! Closes a bit early though

Great coffee and great customer service too

Did a bit of coffee shop hopping on Saturday. Father was our second stop and it absolutely didn't disappoint. Coffee was great and place looks amazing. I bought some beans, grinded them to a nice course grind so I can use it in my french press at work and even done so crudely (compared to how it would be done in the shop) it is still amazing! Loved the shop, people were friendly, but more than that, your coffee is really great! Thanks!

I have no choice but to rate Father Coffee one star. I walked in today and asked for a decaf cappuccino (as I am unable to consume caffeine) only to be told that they don't serve decaf. I've never been told this by any restaurant/cafe in the country and thought it was poor form of such a highly commended coffee company not to offer it. What a huge pity!
Fayaadh Dhansay
Hands down the best flat white I've ever had! Very impressed that the barista wasn't happy with his 1st attempt, and he explained that I'm waiting longer so he can get the flavour right. Blown away!
Louw Roets
I regret buying a 250g pack of Heirloom coffee...because I should have bought 5kg! Best coffee I have ever tasted in my entire life. Met Chad & the team at sanlam_hmc over the weekend and I will be obedient to Father from now on just incase I get whipped cream ;-)
Sharon Pereira
Great coffee, heavenly pastries and first class service. Enjoyed by coffee this morning as well thanks to my Father Coffee beans
Anna Kamolane
The best coffee in Rosebank Mall fo sho :) I love the look and feel of the places as well. Purists when it comes to coffee.
Andi Dill
My sanctuary! Don't know what I would do without Father Coffee The absolute best,
Ignatius Retief
Espresso bar and roastery with best coffee 8n Jhb.
Darren Fanourakis
Awesome coffee and very friendly service here. They also have snacks.
Matthew Freemantle
Enormously satisfying. Was pleased to see they are using a Moccamaster to batch brew their drop coffee. The Swedish bun was basically perfect.
Stacey-Lee Swart
Delicious coffee, and the guys behind the counter know what they're talking about. Love the clean, simplistic feel of the coffee shop with the light wood panels. Very cool over-all.
Rupert Kaminski
What gets me out of bed in the morning. Best way to start the day!
Danielle Giles
Best coffee, best vibe and excellent service - it's a must visit when in the inner city and you can buy your own beans to have the best at home🖤 Absolutely one of my favorite places
Kaleb.TheGent
The decor in this place is just miles ahead - cliché as it may sound but it's utmost simplistic sophistication. You get this calm, chilled vibe as you walk in through the door despite it being on one of the busiest streets in Braam. Friendly staff, couldn't possibly complain. All I ordered was a double cappuccino. So damn strong it was! I wouldn't describe myself as a coffee lover so it turned out to be a bit much for me but taste and fragrance was abundant nonetheless. Was my 1st time here despite being in Joburg for a couple years now and despite the fact that I actually lived in Braam.<br/>I would definitely recommend this place for an easy meet. I'll be back for sure.
Michael Bouffe
Brilliant coffee. Beautiful simple setting, horrible arrogant "too cool" Barista. Still, the coffee is worth all the coolness. <br/>This place is actually pretty accessible, it seems out of the way but isn't. Do it
Mamokete Tsholo
Probably the best coffee I've had by far has to be from Father Coffee... wow, it was so amazing that I didn't even want to eat my croissant anymore. I just wanted to drink the coffee. <br/><br/>P.S The lighting is bomb.com for taking pictures:)
Kreesan Pillay
Definitely one of the better coffee spots in Jhb! Its a small, quaint coffee shop thats serves one of the best cappuccinos I've had yet. They also sell the coffee beans they use.
Tayla Rahme
A cool little spot in the trendy Braam serving dream-like coffee. You'll get no "pumpkin spiced lattes" or flavours of any kind here, but if you appreciate real coffee - its natural flavour and aroma - then you'll feel right at home. Father's baristas are serious coffee men, sometimes bearded, sometimes not. Despite facial hair, they always deliver the godfather of all coffee - no pun intended.
Danieljake
I hardly ever go to Braam without stopping at Father first. Great coffee, very artisanal. Lovely setup inside - nice and cosy. Definitely a must-visit if you're in the area.
Michael Morton
Whenever we swing by Braamfontein, Father coffee is definitely my go to coffee spot! They roast on site and baristas know what they are doing! <br/><br/>The look and feel of Father coffee is the selling point, besides the great coffee it's one of the best looking coffee spots around! Try the affogato, it's pretty phenomenal.. <br/><br/>
Eleni
We finally decided to try their coffee out. Being coffee enthusiasts, we were left rather disappointed... although they have amazing machines, the cups are rather tiny for the price and the coffee is rather bland. My boyfriend had their Lindt hot chocolate with a shot of espresso in and I could hardly taste the coffee in it.
Daniel Sussman
Perhaps the best coffee I have come across so far on my search for the perfect cup. Perfect temperature, delicious blend and hipster. Baristas are super friendly and dress a lot better than me. "Fact the best coffee in Joburg" - Adam Habibb <br/>
Jaynisha Patel
Father Coffee is a small but trendy spot to grab your quick caffeine fix. They have a small seating area. Over the years I've found the service to become less friendly and enthusiastic, which is quite disappointing. <br/><br/>The coffee is great, usually stick to a flat white but I also enjoy the hot chocolate. You generally can't go wrong with their espresso based drinks and I would definitely recommend giving them a try, if you can look past the unfriendly service.
TheHungryKat
So one morning I decided to try Father Coffee and find out what the hype was all about.. And boy oh boy was I not disappointed. These guys make some damn good coffee!
Kevin Simon
The coffee is really nice! The service wasn't to bad, not great, but not bad. Not a big fan of the vibe if the shop, feels a bit 'empty'. Great coffee though, si would recommend just for that!
Masoodah Essop
There is a lot of hype about the coffee from this place, so I decided to check it out. The coffee was pretty decent but the service was terrible!! The guys serving weren't helpful or friendly. The baked goods didn't look very fresh. All in all, not a very pleasant experience. The only reason it gets a 3 is because the coffee is good - otherwise it'd get a 1!
Marcel Cronje
I mean wow! The information that comes with drinking a coffee at Father coffee is amazing, these guys help you with a smile, I asked the most in-depth questions and they answered with pleasure- so I don't even know where you get off, guy.
LuluFromJozi
I very rarely give such a low score, but when a barista gives a smug "N.....O" when asked if they have fresh cream, the cafe cannot expect customers to exit with anything positive to say about them. <br/><br/>I guess if a restaurant's main group of customers are foreigners, I totally get how service is not a priority at all and thus they dont need locals to retun. Which I wont do.
TheVisualFox
The best coffee shop in Braam! Father coffee definantly has the best coffee in the city - that's all I can say!oh and for the hipsters it's a perfect hang out. #numberonecoffee

On my way to a Slam Poetry extravaganza in Johustleburg, I took a pit stop to get my daily dose of Java from Father Coffee. I must say their blend of three Central American and African Coffee is gentle on the palate with great notes and nuances. I had a single shot of espresso as well as a single cappuccino, both equally good. The quality of the coffee surpasses their quality of service.
PJ
Father Coffee has always produced some of the best coffee I have had in awhile. Beautiful minimalist venue, friendly and efficient service. I always recommend Father Coffee to anyone going to JHB.
Sethumncube
Coffee here is great ! The space is small, I think a take away should be best. Quick service and friendly staff, perfect for someone on the move !
Cee Mamp
I'm yet to taste a better flat white in Johannesburg. Wish it was closer to home or near my commute routes, would definitely visit more often.
Neelaм
Great coffee place for students as its so close to Wits. Really enjoyed their Lindt hot chocolate, my friends enjoyed their coffee too. Not many food items.
David Ferronha
Great coffee!! Not the sort of place you'd spend the whole morning but a great place to pop in and have a quick cup of fantastic coffee when exploring the Braamfontein area.
Shmuel Montrose
Nice setup however, music a little to loud, the customer/staff smoking outside made it very unpleasant. Had a double macchiato and double espresso not bad..... Was expecting more out of it
Imtiaz Ahmad
What an awesome Cappucino this place serves, which you can actually call as delicious. Located nearby the famous neighbourgood market, its a must visit when you go there. The staff is quite cheerful and the interiors looks so cool.
Anthea Chittenden
Join the eclectic crowds of downtown Jozi. A tasteful interior that is matched for purpose when cruising the neighborhood for what's on offer. Dark roast coffee with a kick and quite simply delicious. Friendly service with staff happily sharing their knowledge.
Epicurean Republic
Father Coffee is an awesome coffee shop that not only looks amazing but also has great coffee. The herring bone interiors combined with the inner city location make it a hot spot. The service is inconsistent as sometimes you get great service and sometimes it seems as if they don't care. I recommend ordering a Flat White or an Americano.
Yolleen
This is a superb little coffee spot in the braamies area. Its not the biggest coffee shop so expect to wait if you want to be seated. I prefer grabbing a cuppa and hitting the streets to go window shopping. I love that the coffee is served in a shot glass.
Adrian Shannon
Best coffee in South Africa, IMHO. Small, efficient and an extremely satisfying coffee experience. Situated in a great spot with easy to find parking and a lot artistic vibe lying around..
Sally Downie
As this was rated as one of 'the' Joburg coffee spots we popped into Braamfontein one afternoon to try it . It is small and funky - a group of men inside with a young boy in school uniform - you are never too young to appreciate good coffee took up a table and a couple of trendy / hipster chaps sat outside .. Laughing and, they told me, loving the coffee.!! The barristers are brilliant and we sat (it is very small so if busy this might not be possible - but it was lateish) for half an hour having our great coffee and watching the busy pedestrian traffic - not a bad way to waste some time on a mid-week afternoon.
Alexandra Du Plessis
Very hipster little coffee spot in the heart of Braamfontein. Decor is minimal and right on trend - you sort of feel like you're in a coffee shop in the middle of New York. <br/><br/>Service was a bit slow (I think they had some issues with their grinder) but the cappuccino at the end of the wait was well worth it. Quite a smokey tasting roast - very different to any coffee I've had before. <br/><br/>In terms if improvements, I only have two suggestions: first of all, I feel Father Coffee needs a nice visible menu on the wall. They only have a little printed menu on the counter which we didn't get a chance to look at before we ordered, and there were a couple of things we saw that we would have rather ordered instead had we known. <br/><br/>Secondly, I feel they could up their takeaway cup game a bit. The stamped name on the cups were sweet, but they were a bit small and flimsy with no lid - sort of like the cups of coffee you get at school markets. <br/><br/>Really enjoyed my coffee nonetheless, and I definitely plan to return! <br/>
Sebastian Kelly
Had some incredibly tasty coffee at Father. Very distinct smokey flavour with creamy milk. Nice bunch of people running the front of the shop, roasting away or preparing coffee.<br/><br/>The comforting coffee smell wafting through the street should be enough to draw you in, and the wood paneled walls are enough for you to know they mean business.
Darryl W
Supercool hip joint in the new Braamies foodie area - underneath the Saturday food market which is a GREAT addition to Jhb. It exudes coffee culture and vibe. Always loved the independent specialist espresso bars that are starting to find their way into the SA market.
LoveLee
Absolutely love the coffee. Little hard to find between all the loudness. Will recommend this little coffee shop to any coffee snob, you will be impressed.
Babalwa Nyembezi
Coffee nerd - I troll the streets of JoHo for a good fix - and I found it at Father Coffee! <br/><br/>Really enjoyed Father Coffee because they've kept it simple, it's about the coffee. I just wish they offered a larger size option! You're just starting to enjoy the cup and whoops it's gone!<br/><br/>The barista's weren't very friendly when we went, but maybe they were just distracted that day.<br/><br/>Also don't dig that the space is so small - on a busy day you can't sit down and enjoy your coffee because there is no space inside or on the bench outside the coffee shop.<br/><br/>Quality coffee beans, my friend bought a bag that we sip on when I pop into his place as well. Lovely that you can take the Father Coffee experience home :)
Nicholas Hazakis
You don't find a simpler little coffee place than this, very fun vibe and although space may be limited, nothing stoppping you from ordering a coffee, grabbing a stool and sitting out on the street watching the world go by. Thankfully the coffee is good and well priced!
Zara Abdulla
Certainly the best coffee in Joburg, and the pastries are good too. The decor is fantastic, and really suits the vibe they're going for. Parking is a nightmare.
Godfrey De Meyer
These guys are serious about coffee! And you can purchase your favourite roast. No matter what the weather turns out to be, you'll get your fix at Father. <br/>
Niki - Jay Bougaard
It really is delicious coffee - in my top 3 for Joburg, and the staff are always friendly. I strongly recommend it - though it's sad that Paul Ballen no longer makes waffles there on a Saturday!
Jacques Coetzee
Great coffee! <br/><br/>I won't go as far as saying it's "the best" coffee in town. But certainly amongst some of my favorite coffee pits ☺<br/><br/>Love the stark space!
Garth Balabanoff
Being a barista I really appreciate a great coffee shop and of course good coffee; father coffee certainly delivers on both! I've been to Father numerous times as their coffee is superb however over the last little while they've adopted a "we're the best and we know it" attitude which is particularly off putting - even if you are the best.
Princess Petra
Definitely my fav hipster coffee joint this side of the globe. I will pop in when ever I can for cup of some of the finest coffee around. Thank you for introducing the people of joburg to good coffee!
Jonathan
This is a great little 'hole-in-the-wall' coffee joint. The decor is unique and modern minimalistic. The coffee is great and the guys working there are cool. The only advice id give to them is to put a sign up so people can see the damn place - so hard to find - might increase sales. But good unpretentious spot. "Does what it says on the tin".
Judy Crous
Teeny tiny place that serves teeny tiny (but great) coffee. The look of the shop is what gets me every time - it's just too stunning not to walk into. Plus, once we ordered coffee and our card didn't go through and the staff were so nice about letting us go get cash. It's in the thick of the hispster movement and the Neighbourgoods vibe, but don't give it a miss.
@kakspotter
Great Coffee great vibe a must for you guys that have not been there, Owners are always friendly and the Coffee is one of the best i have had
Lelo
Had coffee at father with Tshepo Lekoma one Saturday morning after a doctor's appointment never regretted it, best coffee iv had in jozi, liked the music that played in the background, the place is clean and organized
SimonThePieMan
This coffee roastery has good coffee, however it's definitely not the best I have tasted. I love the hipster vibe and the baristas are brilliant, they show passion and care when prepping your cup!
Alessio La Ruffa
Best coffee in Joburg, hands down. I'll go out of my way to come here. They know my name and they know my order. Felix is a legendary barista.
Raeesa_e
Great coffee - definitely one of the best coffee spots in jhb. Seating is very limited but if its full you can always grab a coffee to go and head around the corner to neighbourgoods market.
David Ronnie
If there is one place I frequent, it is Father coffee, often venturing outside of Wits University into the heart of Braam in search of good coffee. Located on the corner of Juta and de Beer the hub of the regeneration of Braam. When walking passed it can be easy to miss it from the outside up and coming part of Braam. If you're looking for the best coffee in Jozi there is no better place than Father Coffee. The owners and Baristas have a clear passion for their trade, beans are roasted at the shop and I have been fortunate enough to be there when they do and I can say they are very meticulous. I always order the same thing, a double Americano, its come to be "the usual" for me and when I walk in I'm asked I want the usual. They are friendly and warm, service is good as far as a the service can be at a coffee shop.Much is said about the décor, I find it very easy on the eye, quite minimalistic, its interesting with the floating tables and benches, the hanging light-bulbs over the tables, the Father Coffee logo on the wall opposite the entrance, the white or glass ramekin like cups the coffee is served in, the sugar bowls and the small black spoons. They are as meticulous about the set-up and style of the shop as they are about their coffee. I often enjoy just sitting there overlooking the hustle and bustle of braam sipping on "the usual" double Americano. They don't offer much for food but it is a coffee shop and that's all I expect and boy do they deliver, I cannot recommend a better place for coffee than Father Coffee
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
One of the best coffee spots in town. Lovely atmosphere and vibey service. The coffee is excellent but they unfortunately don't offer a decaf option. Great place to grab a coffee on the run or savour each sip while watching the city go by.
Yusuf Dangor
It's no secret that I'm a coffee addict. As an aspiring connoisseur I like to try different places. After hearing a lot of good feedback I knew I had to try it out. <br/><br/>I usually order a classic latte or a cappuccino and enjoy a medium roast. I was quite impressed, the coffee tasted amazing. Father coffee is a great chill spot with a New York vibe. So if you're looking for good coffee and a good vibe, you should definitely visit it.
Veemal Naik
I love the coffee and the flavor  as the coffee is roasted in house. The Latte is always good being a double shot coffee and well frothed milk. <br/><br/>Yum Yum Yum from a Coffee addict.
Jo
I saw one of the owners hand-picking beans that weren't good enough to be user - now that is dedication to coffee! <br/><br/>The coffee was indeed fantastic and I am IN LOVE with the decor! Feels like a bit of New York in Jozitown.
TheJoburgFoodie
One of the best coffee shops in town! Speak to any of the baristas and their passion for their craft is instantly recognisable. Great coffee, with a complexity and depth hard to find amongst Jo'burg's dark roast coffee culture.
Jacqueline Sampson
It's nice but order a double
Maxinelynne
Can't believe I never found this place sooner...splendid coffee and vibe
Meghan Stewart
Most delicious Lindt Hot Chocolate ! A great place to stop by during a Saturday of shopping and eating.
Mandisa
I'm not a coffee lover or connoisseur , hence did not like this experience. I went here a while back. I think they were still new and all they had was coffee, and not much else. I think they have waffles and ice-cream now and perhaps other items on the menu. I will go check it out. Especially because I know the maker of the ice-cream they serve their waffles with. so first time experience wasn't that great, but I'll give it another try , for the waffles. Overall atmosphere of the place is awesome though, mainly because it's in the busy social hub of Braamfontein.  I love the décor more than anything. Had some Lunga concoction, did not like it...purely because I'm not into coffee like that. I like to go there and have tea or something else I can handle, and then I will write another review.
Steven Steinfeld
Without a doubt the best coffee in Joburg! Nothing else needs to be said!
Arjun Sinha
One of the few places in joburg that keep true to fine coffee. No funky Flavors or frappes, just good coffee. There isn't much room to sit but I advise getting your coffee to go since neighborgoods market is around the corner.
Nabeela
Wow! Most overrated place in Johannesburg. The furniture is so tiny and the drinks even more so. Definitely overpriced for the size of the glasses. Vida is a thousand times better.
Wisaal Anderson
When you step into Father off the buzzing streets of Braamfontein it feels like you’re in a wooden capsule. The craziness of Jozi’s streets just 2 meters away, fades quickly and I feel a bit like Alice, having just arrived in Wonderland, my eyes trying to coerce my brain to process what’s in front of it.<br/><br/>Located in the up-and-coming Juta street hub, if you saw Father walking by you’d have to take a few steps back for sure and maybe even pop your head inside the door just to see it up close for yourself. The space is minimalist and clean with a black and white pallet, aside from the wood. The level of detail is astounding and is carried through to every little element as far as the eye can see, even the black dishcloth the barista was using was in keeping with the theme.<br/><br/>Still marvelling, we order 2 flat whites at the counter and make our way over to one of 3 (wooden) floating tables with benches to match, where we gush some more.<br/><br/>The coffee is really good. It’s flavourful without being too strong & is served in what looks like tall, white ramekins (yup, like I said, they’re detailed). I really like that they’re a coffee shop in the true sense of the word. The menu is simple with just 12 warm coffee drinks available (there’s Lindt hot chocolate by the way!). These guys know what they do well & refreshingly, have stuck to it.<br/><br/>It immediately caught my attention that there’s a drink on the menu for R100 & no, it’s not kopi luwak. A skhotado is an espresso, UltraMel (yes, as in the custard) and a glass of Red Bull. And nope, I wasn’t brave enough…<br/><br/>They roast their own beans in-store that’s available for purchase. When I ask about the beans they’re a bit cagey though…<br/><br/>If you’re looking for something to eat you’re not going to find it here, bar a few sweet things, but head 3 doors down the road to Daleahs instead…<br/><br/>Read the full review with pictures on my blog... http://www.wiscellaneous.com/2013/08/23/father-the-cool-coffee-on-the-block/
