Review Galata Bakery - Johannesburg

Tsholofelo Jele
The staff is very friendly, great service and the staff is aware of different types of customers and their needs they make sure every customer is satisfied, i am quite short so i hold high regards for places that offer extra cushions for me to sit on or offer to stack up chairs for my comfort, this is what happened at Galata's . It offers variety in their menu. The atmosphere is relaxed and great for mornings. As a tea fanatic, i loved that when my tea got to our it was still steaming hot.

A place with amazing food, for an affordable price! The staff is great and very friendly!

Enjoy this cute little place! Waitrons are pleasant. Great for coffees and food. Close to the university so for students it’s a plus! The food is also extremely reasonable for what you get, definitely one of my favorite places to stop at in Braam.

Good place to have something to eat and drink - my friends and I had breakfast and lunch here. Plates are very well portioned for the price, food is good and service is good as well. The one thing we didn't like was the coffee, all of our coffees were really light (watery) could be stronger

They make one of the best burgers I have ever tasted. For only R40 you get similar to a King Steer burger with home made style chips. Staff is friendly and the restaurant is very clean. Because it is a new restaurants there are still some kinks that need to be ironed out. Food does take a while from the kitchen. Staff sometimes don't follow instructions properly but not a train smash these will be ironed out in time. In their defense I was there lunch time and it was very busy.

Everyone was so friendly and really attentive. I live close to there so I'll definitely go back, cool atmosphere and locals. Oh by the way, the food is also great.

Lovely turkish food and very convenient to students at Wits. More seating would be appreciated as there is often very limited space. The atmosphere could be improved by use of subtle Turkish background music.
Aysha Latib
The Turkish meatballs were lovely. Portions and price were generous. Vibey atmosphere. Yummy chocolate mousse

Good vibe. Mocha, omelette and Nutella Toast on Turkish bread were all really good

Amazing Turkish coffee shop! The service is great and the food is amazing.

The place features very affordable, yet delicious delicacies one or a group of people would enjoy. I have seen students to people people coming from work dining there. Their cakes deserts are scrumptious. Their milkshakes are wow. The scenary hosts an indoor and outdoor sitting area. They can improve on their menu pamphlets, making them more presentable and heavier to carry.
Shamima Chohan
A lovely turkish place in the heart of jhb. with a great inner city bizz. burgers are great.

Could improve on the service but the food, drinks and dessert were on point... Highly recommend it for the Turkish experience

I was honestly very skeptical about the bakery because the first time I went there they had no donuts, ha ha today I decided to try one of your burgers after buying hubbies birthday cake there a week ago and he gave you good reviews. I came back and Ordered 'The Smit Burger" & a ring donut to go and I must say I am mind blown, the burger is so juicy, the side chips are fried to the perfect crisp and the ring donut sealed the deal. I'm very choosy when it comes to food I mean being a chef myself. I can definitely say I will be back for more.. keep up the good work and amazing service .

Popped into Galata Bakery & Coffee on Grove Square at 87 Juta Street, Braamfontein for a Türk kahvesi (Turkish coffee) and stayed for a Pogača Burger and a Simit Pide for breakfast. Can you imagine? Two Turkish coffees and a Çay (Turkish black tea) later I got to chat to the owner Savas Daskan and his son Mustafa about moving to South Africa. Food quality is most important and they will not compromise on ingredients or taste. The mum still makes the traditional desserts - like baklava and Sütlaç (a divine Turkish Rice pudding). They have two young black managers that speak Turkish, as they attended a local school that has Turkish as a compulsory subject till grade 11. Very interesting indeed. They are open Monday to Monday as Mustafa giggles - 7 days a week from 07:00 to 20:00. Keep in mind Sundays are popular for breakfast. If you go tell Mustafa I sent you. You may get a complimentary Cay. I will certainly be back to try everything on the menu and especially the Kanafah (a specialty Middle Eastern cheese pastry soaked in sugar-based syrup), that they plan to import from Turkey. A batch was flown in yesterday for testing but I missed it. Having been to Turkey 3 times and eaten all these dishes before, I rate Galata highly. #GotToGo #GotToTry #VManRated

Absolutely delicious breakfast at Galata in Greenside. We had the memem and sucuk, both highly recommended. The olives were super amazing. Very friendly, prompt service and the prices are great, too.

The staff here is very friendly and they have very affordable meals and the best burgers ever!!

The service was OK for a Friday afternoon.

Cute atmosphere and great service. great for intimate but casual dates. The cakes are to die for.
All in all I rate all my experiences a 4/5

Great spot in a lovely part of Jozi, hearkening to the city's vibrant recent (and yet somehow still long-forgotten) past.

The unique Turkish fair was exciting to discover; I loved the Turkish-style scrambled eggs (menemen) I had for breakfast, with equally delicious accompaniments, including some cheesy gozleme. (The acma, simit and pogca will soon all be sampled!)

By the way the cakes on display also looked ridiculously enticing (see what I mean in the photo) and though I held firm this time I'm sure they are also part of my short term future 😋!

I really enjoyed our breakfast here! We enjoyed both the Menemen and Pide. The setting is the trendy Braamfontein district. The only reason for the lack of the 5th star is you need to be careful in this part of Jozi. It’s not the safest area. Lovely coffee too!

I've visited this place a few times. I keep going back because of how affordavle it is.
During lunch time the place becomes packed and service is rather slow.
Furthermore, staff is friendly and the food tastes good.

The staff is friendly and very helpful. The simit burger is delicious. The strawberry and vanilla milkshakes taste good, but are a bit pricey for their size. The cakes used to be delicious but they have tasted awful lately. The chocolate cake is okay (nothing to rave about). The vanilla cake is too sweet for my liking. The red velvet cake tasted so weird that I could not even finish it. It had a weird aftertaste that left a pinching sensation on my tongue.
Today I had their carrot cake. I was sorely disappointed once again. The cake was too moist. Halfway through eating it I realised that the cake was under-baked. I could actually see fluid in the cake.

Great food menu, very friendly staff, I normally always go there to get my spicy chai tea , they never disappoint me,
I’ve made it my place of peace

Absolutely love this place , go there quite a lot. The food is always great and it’s affordable too☺️ When you do decide to go there don’t leave without trying the cakes 😉

such a cute joint in the heart of braamfontein. the greatest service and such good coffee. the simit* burger and the wings were so delicious. definitely a must.

Have been here quite a few times... Always enjoyed myself... Living the vibey Braamfontein... Had some of the meals which was good, but why you go here is the Turkish coffee... Such a rich hot unfiltered coffee to enjoy with a piece of Turkish delight on the side... Keep on going back for this caffeine kick...
Chioma Asomugha
The ambience was so-so. Not very vibrant yet not relaxed.
The wings lack in flavour and the sauce accompanying the wings was very distasteful.
The burger is filling and the chips are crisp and seasoned nicely.
Presentation is standard.
Service can be good one day and then below average the next. We had to ask for them to give us cutlery which was unprofessional of them.
The cakes are not great at all.
Zanenkululeko Belot
Lovely Turskish Cafe in Braamfontein, they make the best Tiramisu I’ve ever tasted truly.

They also offer a wide variety of baked goods, sandwiches and lunch time specials

Student budget-friendly food for a more generous portion compared to the places around them. This place is perfect destination for students who seek halaal food in braamfontein. The service was friendly, however, I have only been there during times that are considered off-peak. The pide and burgers are very filling. The Turkish coffee is served with a Turkish delight all in one long plate. The coffee itself is on par as Turkish coffee.

I just went in to buy the rainbow cake. I found it odd that there's someone who ordes for you, when you're standing right there.

The cake was stale and dry, but very delicious. I can imagine how much more delicious it would have been. The purple icing was also very bitter. Please try to improve the storage of the cakes.
Thokozani Ngcobo
I absolutely enjoy going to Galata. The prices are affordable, their food and cakes are really amazing. The staff is quite friendly and welcoming. I also like the fact that they can move around the setup to accommodate people.

Went to Galata for the first time today. Really enjoyed it. Good ambience. Excellent service. Very affordable menu.
Had the Turkish breakfast, omelette and a Simit burger. All the food was delicious and served warm. Enjoyed the complimentary bread and baklava.
Would definitely recommend and return.

The service was far below standard. We were very disappointed by our the waitresses conduct. The lack of ice on a hot spring day was also unsatisfactory. We waited far too long for simple orders. It was a very disappointing first encounter. I would not recommend this establishment.

Amazing little store in the heart of Joburg. Authentic Turkish food in a store which is totally in tune with the youth culture in Braamfontein.

Simple, affordable menu; good food; excellent service. I'm thoroughly impressed with this Braam eatery!

Edit to my previous post:
Today I had the Simit Burger. This must be one of the best burgers I've had in Johannesburg. On a lovely simit bun baked on premises, this burger is packed with flavour. And at R45 for a double burger, this is one of the best value for money meals I've found.
Danelle Keulder
What a gem in Braamfontein! Their Turkish coffee is a must try (seriously, do yourself a favour) and any of their baked goods are brilliant. So far; milktart, carrot cake, tiramisu and cheese cake are all definite wins. Waiters are beyond fantastic too. Definitely recommended and very affordable

Loved it. The only restaurant I've been to, that actually serves fresh hot food. THANKS. And thanks also for giving me whole new coffee when I needed a reheat 💪
Kayleen Morgan
Amazing service and time efficient. Though the restaurant was quite busy we didn't wait long for our food to arrive. Affordable, the food was good, atmosphere is great and the staff are friendly. I will definitely return.
I'd actually just come back from a vacation in Turkey....this was an accidental find whist wondering the streets of Braam.

So impressed by the menu...simple, affordable with traces of authentic Turkish favorites. The vibe is 100% mzansi youth culture...which is what u want in Braamfontein....young and vibrant with outdoor seating so you can watch the student buzz outside.

I had brunch...omelet (a bit greasy..that's why it's not a 5 rating) with some Turkish tea...but the lunch menu looked appetizing and the cakes looked sooooooooo decadent!!

I'll definitely be back here with the girls who joined me on my vacation....it's a tasty trip down memory lane.

It was busy when I visited in the afternoon and a lot of the best goodies had already sold out. Owned by actual Turks, this pumping little cafe in the courtyard is the real deal. Not only are the pastries, breads and Turkish teas and coffees authentic, it's madly affordable too.

I'll definitely be back for brekkie and at lunch to try that amazing value-for-money Simit burger and chips (just R40).

5/5/17

this is the second one of these addressed to you. but this time you are less paragraph, less phantom. you are more the person who can make me laugh in a way no one else can. you are the person who has read about my nightmares and still wants to listen. (if only Galata's staff were as attentive.)

my simit meal - with fresh tomatoes and olives and cucumber and feta with a freshly baked seed roll - remained untouched. we were talking too much, about Baldwin and Coates and chameleons, starving. we confronted and consoled (if i'm happy now, it means i made the correct decisions to get me to this place, according to your vision of fate, in the opinion of your comforting of me.)

and over champagne i learnt further how we are so the same when we spoke of unhappy birthdays, the objectivity or subjectivity of suffering: "i think artists self-aggrandize their suffering for their work. but do you think that's wrong?" in response my poems looked at the floor, because there is a dead father and there are dead lesbians. because there are burn victims and airplane crashes - there's no need to note me.

it's light-switch delicate, the balance between allowing others to see us in our cracked perfection and the understanding that some of the overflowing boxes behind us when we stand at doorsteps are not ours. my own fingers are still roving in the dark.

This place is amazing! It's so rare to find a halaal food place in Braam but this place is exceptional! The service is amazing, the staff are so friendly and he prices are so reasonable! Definitely had a great experience.
Nokwanda Mpama
The food is wonderful, reasonably priced and the service is exceptional. We were quite a big table but our waitress Thandi took great care of us and the manager come to our table to say hi. The restaurant was packed but the staff still managed to be friendly and warm. And the place is gorgeous☝

We enjoyed the Pide which was light and cheesy. The Simit burger, the Ayran and the Galata milkshake were good too.
However I was not impressed with the Turkish kofte meal which was the most expensive item on the menu at R60. Chips were hard and the salad looked a few days old.
The chocolate cake was good, but the milk tart was too liquidy. It hadn't set yet. A lot of menu items were not available. There was also no baklava, which was unusual for a Turkish restaurant. The waitresses were friendly though and the prices were good.

I love their cakes honestly, the cakes are always fresh, I still want to taste their rainbow cake though. Their ice cream is also great😍😍.

First of its kind in Braamfontein! Work well in a spirit of absolute harmony. Seem to have a definiteness of purpose to serve their customers in the only way they know how - SMILES all day everyday!

I had a delicious authentic Turkish brunch at Galata on Saturday morning. Service (for a table of 9) and food top notch. Prices very reasonable. Looking forward to going back!

Location: @galata.bakery
87 Juta Street, Braamfontein.

1. Galata is located just 5 minutes off the Smith Street turnoff from the M1N/S. There is parking on the streetside. It's easy to miss the building, but when you spot a bright red and yellow building, you know you're in the right place. Simply walk into the yard and Gelato is to the left. Personally, I'd leave valuables at home.

2. There is seating inside and outside. You may take a seat and the waitress will assist with a menu, or you may walk up to the pastry and bread display to choose what you'd like to eat. If you're planning on taking any item hone with you, buy it when you see it! They get really busy and there's a chance you might not get any bread before you leave. Special mention to Siphosenkosi for her great service.

3. Galata is owned by a Turkish gentleman and are in the process of obtaining certification. This establishment is Halaal.

4. We were 2 people having breakfast this morning and we ordered:
- 1 x Turkish Breakfast (Menemen - Turkish scrambled eggs, cucumber, tomato, olives, feta, Turkish Roll with honey and butter, bread filled with cheese). A pot of tea is included.
- 2 x Turkish coffee
- 1 x Suckuk (Egg with Turkish ground meat)
- 1 x Pogaca (soft bread filled with chocolate)
Our bill came to R145 in total (I ordered plain Pide as a takeaway at R10ea).

There is no chili in any of the dishes, and the eggs are quite bland. I really loved the soft bread filled with cheese that's served with the Turkish breakfast. Portion sizes are quite small on the eggs (for men), so request sonething else to have with the eggs if you're going starving.

5. Aside from being so affordably priced, I love the minimalism in terms of decor; not traditionally Turkish decor but rather fresh and contemporary. Tables are wooden and everything is clean and neat. In addition, the lunch and dinner menu includes Simit burgers, Turkish Kofte and Tantuni. They are open until 8pm.

6. There is a large selection of 'normal' cakes and pastries, which we didn't try. I'm keen to go back just for their Simit! I recommend brining back some of the Pogaca and warming it for a few minutes in the oven.

The place and every single taste of food make me to feel at home, as in Turkey ☺
Owner and waiters are so kind and friendly.
With My one glass of Turkish tea, I really enjoyed to have my breakfast 🍽
