Review Bistro Vine - Johannesburg

Dora Prévost
One of my favorite restaurant and definetely the best place in Joburg if you want to have moule frites, they are just to die for 😋 the food is excellent!!! I always spend good time here. I forgot to take photos of my moules frites I was so in a rush to eat them. 🙈

All the food was excellently prepared and flavourful. There wasn't a bite that wasn't wonderful. A good variety of dishes with something for everyone. Every dish was prepared to perfection. We will definitely be back to try more items off the menu.

FANTASTIC restaurant serving really good French food. I HIGHLY recommend! Good selection of French wines.
Gill Spargo
We loved the duck pate and the rib eye steak. Excellent waitress Bianca. Calvin the manager was hands on and the whole evening was superb.

Was taken here by an a friend for lunch really liked the small cozy feel of the place. Service was casual but quiet adequate - my deboned half chicken was absolutely superb. Would definitely recommend a visit if you want to break out of the chain restaurant rut. Parking in the area is always up a side street but it’s worth the walk if you have to park further away than usual - it’s the areas popularity that makes it this way.

What a special evening. Thanks for the great service, the well prepared food, and an overall amazing intimate vibe. My fiance proposed on the evening, and you guys made it a point to make it extra special, thanks

Found this lovely little French Restuarant on the Internet. We were thrilled with the underdecorated look, very French. Marvelous menu..not 50 pages long and an excellent choice. The longest wine list I've ever seen and this was admired by a young wine expert from the Cape. Great service too.
Luke Mckend
Smaller restaurant with local feel. Small menu, but having tried everything at least once, would happily have all again. Small but good quality relatively inexpensive wine list also appeals. Pork belly and chorizo is a favourite and the burger is an excellent lunch option.

The most intimate and fantastic dining experience one could hope to have. Honest cooking with attention to detail. Well priced if compared with other restaurants in the area and in Johannesburg, in fact. Well pricing extends itself to the wine list which is a fantastic balance between local and international wines. A must visit!
Brendan Fry
A wonderful, cozy French inspired restaurant. There is a good wine list, a menu of only a few items that are the focus for the season and friendly staff. The steak frites was good and the panna cota rounded out the meal. All in all it was a great dining experience.

Always a great place to have a relaxing lunch or intimate evening. Seafood linguine and braised lamb shoulder are highly recommended. Not the best place to have steak in my experience. Panna cotta and chocolate tart are great. Best part is that you can book a table by sending Daniel, the owner, a text. He always responds quickly.

Great cosy setting for a cold winters evening. Not our first time at Bistro. Would recommend and have recommended Bistro to our friends. Service was great, except this time had to kill a cockroach on the table and my burger was uber dry, mussels were a bit dull. Am sure next time would be 100% again.

I like this place. One of the more upmarket places on the ever-popular Parkhurst Strip. Friendly, unpretentious and excellent mussels & chips! Not a vast choice of wine by the glass, but decent options.
Nkuli Tleane
The place has a warm atmosphere thats romantic without being fetitious. It always feels like home or even Italy. The food is amazing, hearty and on point. No matter what you order its to die for!!! Especially chorizzo and pork stew thing!!!! Its to die for.

I love everything about this place! The food is delicious, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is wonderful and warm. Never disappoints!!

Excellent service & food...All of the starters on the current menu are exceptional. My main of duck confit was not excellent but still quite enjoyable.

The desserts are lovely & would definitely recommend the bitter lemon tart.

What a lovely evening, cosy and romantic. The service was incredible and the food was delicious. For starters we had the Wild Mushrooms and Snails, for mains hubby and I both had the Steak Tartare and for dessert the creme brulee and lemon tart. Looking forward to our next meal here.

Party of 4, excellent starter - fine duck liver pâté, calamari tasty, pork belly wholesome and spring rolls nice.

Bouillabaisse not up to standard, prawns not pealed; carrots, onions and tomato roughly chopped. Does not support the delicacy of saffron wine and fennel. Tomato base overpowering. Overcooked - disappointing, lacked care and finesse.

Seared salmon and seafood pasta bland. Mussels delicately prepared, well balanced - a great dish.

Creme brûlée excellent while the small bottle of Amurula detracted from its greatness. Was expecting a desert menu to match the magnificence of the mains selection.
Nicole Lombard
I had the Duck Confit and the bitter lemon tart. Excellent and fantastic service. Every time. I recommend this place to anyone who appreciates great quality and amazing flavours.

Great ambiance
Very good service
Nice wine
Gluwein nice touch
The Pork belly and Calamari starter is one of the best starters I’ve had in a long time. Very bold in taste, nicely balanced, huge portion with a nice bite of chilli. Daughter had the Calamari starter which was very tasty prepared in a delicate sauce and probably the right size portion for a starter.
Wife had the Duck liver pate which was also tasty. Unfortunately both their mains were a let down. Daughter’s sirloin was tough although it was prepared as ordered medium to rare. The meat had tough sinews and never as tasty as Rump. Luckily her Fries were good. My wife’s bouillabaisse was disappointing as it lacked taste and seasoning. My braised lamb was ok-ish... and I almost swallowed 2 strings of the Lamb Roulade which was not supposed to be in the plate. Nothing special about the creme brûlée and the panna Cotta either. BUT will be back to try some of the other mains, hopefully it would be better. Starters are awesome though.
On a warm Friday night I joined a few friends to try the tastes and atmosphere @ Bistro Vine. Bistro being a quaint, well established centrally located French themed restaurant in the heart of Parkhurst's 4th Avenue.

Superb in terms of atmosphere and ambiance, the restaurant also.... Our waiter was friendly and very attentive. Most order starters - I did not. Tried a bit of my friend's carpaccio and it was amazing. It made me look forward to my mains. Sadly it didn't live up to expectations. Overly sweet Pork belly (to the point of it being a sugar soup / au jus) was too rich and gave my nauseous later that night. Other friends had a good selection of meals they seemed to enjoy.

Overall a vibey place, with hit and miss plates, I think I'll have to try again - and go for a safer option!

Went here on a Saturday lunch date. What a cute little place and lovely little tables to sit outdoors in the sun on a warm winters day.
Too many tasty options in the starters sections-I ended up having two starters. Tried the brie in phyllo pastry and the mussels (moules frites). My husband ordered the steak frites. Everything was delicious!
Good service! Highly recommend this place.

This is such a lovely intimate little place. I am not adventurous when it comes to food so I ordered good old steak and chips. The steak was cooked to perfection and delicious.
My companion had lamb and said it was delicious.
The service is faultless.
I was very impressed.
Love.Life.Daley
This bistro has a lovely feel to it and we enjoyed the atmosphere. The starter portions were generous and my favourite was definitely the phyllo wrapped brie. The Mussels were good but the wine sauce was slightly overpowering, it did however come with a bowl of chips which went down well.

For mains we ordered the Salmon and Pork belly dish. From the description of the Pork belly I actually had no idea what I was in for. I would describe the dish as a type of stew and although enjoyable, I'm more of a crispy fat Pork belly type of girl. It was a really rich dish. The Salmon was good although I'm not personally a fan of curried yoghurt.

To end off we shared a brownie that was sweet, warm and overloaded with nuts.

Service was decent and we enjoyed our evening. For the price though I just felt like the food lacked that extra element of excitement that I expected going in.

Love this intimate and classy little side restaurant. So easy to wall past it down 4th avenue but truth is it's amazing. There are always great specials and delicious wine available. Very French influence the food is rich and full of flavour. Whether it's mussels or rabbit, this is the perfect place for a romantic dinner on a very chilly winter night. Love it.

I have nothing else but praise for this little gem of a restaurant. AMAZING food! My whole family ate here for mother's day and it was a wonderful experience. From the very polite staff, to the inventive menu and gorgeously delicious food, it was all 5 star and absolutely heavenly. The food is also as beautifully presented as it is delicious... their chef deserves loads of complements!

Had lunch here today we ordered oysters, fried camembert, muscles and confit duck. The dishes were all excellent. Good variety of SA and French wines for such a small bistro (around 10 or 12 tables at most) excellent service and delicious creme brule for dessert. If I have to nitpic... the duck could have been a little bit more moist or served with a jus as it was very slightly on the dry side but very delicious. Will definitely be back. 5 stars from me.
Louisa Botha
Excellent everything Thank you We ordered 6 dishes between the 4 of us - each one a melody of flavors The staff knows their stuff a memorable experience
LuluFromJozi
Such a lovely find. We walked in for a drink only but stayed for starters and it was lovely. Classic french food, bistro style, along with long lists of lovely wines, both French and South African. Really want to go back again.

A girlfriend and I booked a table here for a long overdue catch-up and as it was both our first times, we arrived excited to try this French bistro food.

On the food side, we selected a few plates and opted to share:
Calamari served in a sweet chilli, onion & cream sauce with egg noodles
Moules Frites- Fresh Saldanah bay mussels cooked in its own stock with cream, herbs, white wine, leeks & celery served with French fries & home made mayonnaise
Pork belly, squid & chorizo-sliced pork belly, chorizo sausage & calamari fried together with a red chilli, lemon, cherry tomatoes and parsley
And last but not least.. the lamb.

We were served by the knowledgable and helpful Danika.
A noticeable mention to our capable manager Calvin, coming past throughout the evening to check on our courses.

For a first visit, Daniel's little restaurant did not disappoint! I cannot wait to return and add to this with some decent photography!

*Recommendation: If you are craving some classically French food and a sidewalk cafe feel, Bistro Vine is a must try!

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

Stumbled upon Bistro Vine yesterday (Saturday) afternoon in search of something to eat and a kitchen that was still open. Owing to the heat of the day we opted for something light and refreshing and definitely made the right choices.

There oysters were fresh and absolutely delicious - we had 6 - before enjoying salads. My absolute favorite salad is a Pear & Gorgonzola which I always order when on the menu, but I'll have to admit the one I had at Bistro Vine was my best one yet! I asked for extra bacon which made it a real winner.

Great service, great spot, great food.

Bistro Vine is my favourite restaurant - we once had four dinners in one week here – irrefutable proof, no? (*Hears mutters of me being boring. Pretends didn’t hear mutters of me being boring*)

I didn’t finish that sentence. Bistro Vine is my favourite restaurant for two reasons, both equally satisfying.

Firstly, the meals are delicious. Having tried most of the meals here, my favourite is the pork and squid. Try it. This traditional Spanish dish served in a French Bistro (“Who’s to know?” as Julia Child would say…and if you don’t know who Julia Child is, allez maintenant.) is everything I like in a meal. Bursting with flavour, rustically presented and doesn’t leave you feeling like you need to be airlifted home. Try the chicken livers starter, pork and squid main, and panna cotta dessert.

Reason number B: Bistro Vine allows me to enjoy my favourite Parkhurst pastime – watching people parallel park...come on, don’t say you don’t also watch with bated laughter. A 12 point manoeuvre is the best I’ve seen!

I’m always going to be a taker for last (and first) minute dinner dates here.

What an amazing evening we had at Bistro Vine 😍👌🏻🙌 Nice and cozy French restaurant ....
We enjoyed every minute of it - the meals were all so great and tasty 😋
For starters we had the salmon and Avo and the pork belly .
For mains we had the Pork Belly with calamari and chorizo- one of their best dishes it's a must try and we also had the rib eye which was cooked to perfection .
Thank you Danika for the special touch on the desserts 🍨 for the birthday 🎉 boy😍
A birthday 🎉 party without a cake is good as a meeting so we ended the evening with chocolate brownie and ice cream 😋
It was a very special evening 😍
The whole strip at parkhust is always amazing and vibrant especially on a Friday evening ...
Excellent service we received from Danika thank you again for making the whole evening memorable ...

Really nice food and vibe. Service was good.
Good for a date. Meats and mussels are delicious.
Pricing in the upper side of the normal.
It's worth a try.

Bistro Vine is one of my go-to French places in Joburg and it never disappoints. The menu offers a great selection of classic French dishes and their weekly specials are always a wonderful addition to an already extensive menu offering. The wine selection is also nothing to scoff at offering a mix of both local and French wines for any budget type which always makes for a better all-round dining experience. The service is always friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, the decor simple, cosy and elegant. The cooking is true to it's French roots without much fuss which is exactly what French food should be - simple but delicious!
This really is a great little spot and I would recommend it to anyone seeking a laid-back French dining experience.
Dino
Great ambience and food at this cosy little French bistro in Parkhurst. Started with the mushrooms on polenta which was tasty and comforting, followed by the confit duck for main which was tender, moist and delicious. My only criticism would be that the duck really needed a nice sticky sweet sauce/jus to complement the delicious salty duck. I also tasted the red snapper with chorizo and clams which was a divine combination, as well as the mussels which were cooked to perfection. For dessert we had a few different tarts, the chocolate and lemon were both very palatable. A decent wine list and great service round off a very enjoyable evening.

What a last minute decision but so glad we decided to have dinner at Bistro Vine. As with all restaurants in Parkhurst the vibe is faultless. This restaurant in particular had a good mix of diners, from the trending millennial to the more eccentric and mature. It's a nice small restaurant and very relaxed. Sitting outside is better because inside can be pretty noisy. I loved the fact that the menu isn't massive but isn't too restrictive either. The Calamari starter was absolutely excellent, I couldn't get enough of the sauce! The Chicken & Pistachio Nut Linguine was unbelievable in my opinion but my friend felt that the portion was a bit too big for such a rich dish. That said, the reason he ordered that was because they did not have the 1/2 Deboned Roast Chicken. The problem was that this was obviously not communicated to the waiters because they only told us they didn't have it 10 minutes after we ordered it and it still showed up on the bill. Apart from the sometimes jerky service this is a really great restaurant for a hearty French meal. Would like to go back to try a dessert.

We started the evening off to Duck Pate & Pork Belly. Pate much better unless you love carbs. We moved onto the duck & chiro/squid - both devine! 👌🏻. The evening was ended with cheese cake. Well... I won't go back for dessert, but our mains. The waitress & manager was lovely. Thanks for trying & making an effort 😊

Service was splendid and absolutely pleasant. It was that random night in spring which for some reason was cold, however we were warmly welcomed and had to rush to order because the kitchen was closing. We had the best French rose. The starter was an amazing snails in curry sauce kinda dish followed by Brie cheese in phyllo. We had the best salmon which trust me you must go and order the sweet potato as a side. French cuisine at its best.. but, wait for it.. wow wow wow guys the highlight was the dessert. Oh my soul, lemongrass panacotta which actually was mind blowing.. silk on the pallet coupled with a melody of balance.. I shall be back 🙌

Lovely ambiance in this little restaurant. Our waitress was quick and we enjoyed her personality. Food devine but found it a little pricey for what you get, my salmon was such a small cut for R185..
Mandy
Enormously impressed with the service. The waitress remembered the style of wine we love as well as our food preferences 10 months after our last visit.
It has the most enigmatic ambience with such a personal touch.

Loved this quaint little bistro. It's quite unassuming from the outside and almost dwarfed by the neighboring Rockets. The interior is cosy and decorated to a French countryside theme. I came for lunch and the restaurant was rather quiet. The menu is limited but there is something for everyone. I ordered a duck confit with pumpkin bakr. Cooked to perfection, was very enjoyable! The flavours were excellent and the duck was truly a star! My dining partner had the cassoulet which they said was delicious but quite an enormous portion. For dessert I had the white chocolate cheesecake which was pleasing but not extra special. The poached pear on their menu is warm and delicious and the contrast with the dark chocolate is amazing. I'd definitely recommend it! All in all a lovely experience.

Enjoyed it. Good food, great vibe. Definitely worth visiting again. Friendly staff and great wine list. Loved the intimacy the place offers, not too much noise or music.
Zandile
There a few disappointing moment such a s our table been given away just before our arrival, and they didn't have most of the stuff that was on the menu such as the oysters and avo so I had to change my starter and main because of shortage of ingredients... Besides that I must say my second option of starter and main were amazing loved the food and wine
Your Taste Buds
This was an amazing night out with awesome food and service. Ohhh how I missed this place. #bistrovine I started with #mussels with perfectly crisp chips and had a portion of French oysters. The mussels are a winner and a must as a starter or mains. Then the main - had the Pork and Shrimp combo. (Pictured in the main picture). This combo is so strange but I loved every bite and wanted more. The French wine from personal cellar. This is one of my favorite and consistently happy bistro in Gauteng. Bravo to Daniel for this place. #illhavewhatdimitrihas #reviewnotsponsored #yourtastebuds #foodie #french #bistro #gauteng #parkhurst

Having the best best lunch going into sunset on your pavement. Great food, wine and whiskey, friends. And as for Angelica our spectacular waitress... All acclaim to her! We will be back. Xx

I love bistro vine the service is alway attentive and the food is great. The seating is a little tight.
The Brie starter is excellent the calamari is tender and tasty, the chicken livers are also great. The seafood pasta is amazing the pork and calamari cassoulet is fantastic. I tried the banana dessert which was ok but the chocolate tart was excellent.

Parkhurst has a great feel and is littered with little venues. Bistro Vine is a beautiful little place with a great atmosphere. Great lighting helps to set the mood.

The service was fantastic. Both ladies serving tables were very knowledgable about the recipes. Each of them making every effort to make us feel comfortable.

The food was actually the worst part of the experience. Not terrible, but it didn't live up to the standard set by everything else.
Jenny Taylor
Could not decide between 3.5 or 3.0 - decided on 3.5 as quality matched cost. The starter was a salmon fritter ... Really tasty, but dry without a something extra., there could have been more cream cheese. The main course was bouillabaisse - good selection of seafood mixed with tomato relish, but without the jalapeño sauce again nothing special. The desert made up for it - simple but good... Brownie. The wine was expensive with base cost R50 or R55 a glass. Will consider , but not rush back found everything a bit pricey.
Carien Jakovljevic
Hmm, this is such a difficult review to write. The food wasn't bad, my expectations were just really high. I had the roast chicken with a side of green beans, and husband had the mussels they are "famous" for (according g to the waiter, who by the way, was very good). Firstly, the food simply didn't make sense. My chicken is only the chicken, and you can choose any of the sides. I honestly think they should have the chicken standard with something that complements the flavour, and not leave it up to the customer to guess. The chicken was quite dry and the basting was super sweet. Not the best chicken I've ever had by far, but not bad enough to complain. Husband's mussels was big and juicy and fresh, but again, didn't make sense being served with fries and not a delicious baguette or rice to really be able to get to all that sauce.

The restaurant itself has a lovely ambience and very intimate setting. The bathroom however is through the kitchen in the corner. A cramped old school toilet. Not nice. And the kitchen wasn't particularly clean, so I am glad I only saw it after eating.

Again, I can't particularly fault them or wrote a bad review, but it was quite disappointing.
Anja Immelman
This is what a bistro should be. Small and cozy enough, quaint, with an impressive wine selection of both local and French wines. This is a gem, and the food is something to die for!
Matthew
Awful food, at ridiculous prices. My "house speciality" Fillet Rossini comprised layers of fillet that were tasteless, and some sort of spongy gunk that tasted like the smell of dog food.
Carel Böhmer
Not sure why I have always given Bistro Vine a miss when strolling down the 4th Avenue strip. It is a quant setting once you've pierced trough the red awning. The food choices are exquisite and prepared with affection.

Maybe a restaurant to be reserved for a special occasion, as your wallet will feel a bit lighter afterwards, but your spirit will definitely be lifted - which provides the required balance. It's best to reserve a seat, but if Bistro Vine is booked fully continue your stroll and book for that special occasion.
René Bennett
Good service, excellent vibe. A bit on on the expensive side for the food you get. Food is good - it's not mind blowing though. Overall a good lunch experience with friends.

Small, intimate little French restaurant - just how it should be. Had dinner here last week Wednesday and it was the perfect setting for date night. The restaurant is focused on French cuisine but there are a few 'global' meals which can suit many tastebuds. They also have a superb extensive list of wines, so give that a go. We started off with the Duck Liver Pate to share. Well presented and tastebuds were satisfied! I then ordered the Pork Belly-Calamari-Chorizo, it was an infusion of flavour. Great combination of flavour all in one. My partner ordered the Sirloin steak with a pepper sauce and fries. I had to also had a taste of this and the only thing I could fault is the pepper sauce - just a little more pepper spice in the sauce could have got a 5/5. Otherwise it was cooked to perfection.
On the whole, loved this little French bistro. Great place, good location, outstanding service and gives a great addition to trying new cuisines.

Phenomenal experience with excellent food and champagne! Ambiance environment was terrific! Looking forward to celebrating my birthday with a large group of friends there again next weekend!

I just came from what was supposed to be a lovely girls night out at this establishment. We arrived without a reservation, and we were thrilled to get a table anyway. We were seated outside on the sidewalk. No problem because it was a beautiful, sunny day out. We had a decent evening, until it started raining. Like real rain. We left our table on the sidewalk and went inside the restaurant for shelter. No one bothers to assist us. We asked one of the waitresses (dark, curly hair) if she can assist as we still had drinks at our table. She didn't stop, or make eye contact, when I asked her what we should do. I then asked her if we have to leave...She flippantly says, "I guess so", I asked her again, and again, and she said "I guess". At this point we are randomly standing in a restaurant, looking and feeling like we're imposing, so we ask for the bill. We pay. As we leave, one of my friends tells the manager how upset we are and that we have not had a pleasant experience and felt that we were not taken care of. The manager then says "I am not sure what you expect me to do, we are a small establishment". And he was done with us.

Very disappointed. I will not visit again. And will also not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Stinky, ugly attitudes.
Nishela Ramgoolam
I found Bistro Vine very disappointing. The food was bland. The crispy duck lacked flavour and was not very crispy. They were out of mussels due to the red tide, but I would like to go back to try the mussels based on the reviews.
Kelly Parker
The food was well prepared and piping hot. I ordered the deboned chicken, my wife the kingklip and daughter the fish cakes. Could not find fault with the food at all and reasonably priced. The waiter kept an eye on us as it filled up quickly between 1pm and 2pm. He also explained the waiting period and was spot on. A very pleasant surprise and we will definitely be going back. On negative if you can call it that is being harassed (maybe to strong a word) by the street venders, although all the patrons handled it well.
Divan Botha
Thx for an amazing dinner. Took my family here this evening. Really good solid service, amazing mussels, steak tartare and loin chops. Will def be back!

Had dinner at Bistro Vine last night and was most disappointed with the food and the service. Thirty minutes after ordering we were told that our food was "stolen" by another table. We waited another hour after that before we received our food. Our order was wrong (despite the waiter having two bites at the cherry). I ordered the roast chicken but got braaied bland chicken. My sister's sirloin was full of sinew. The only saving grace was the decor and wine.
Melissa Claassens
Lovely evening with friends. Food and wine was superb! Chicken & pinenut penne, was unbelievable! Truely a great little bistro in the middle of town! Enjoy ;)
Leon Van Zyl
For the steak top marks 5! But unfortunately had the pear for desert and that made only a 2. The service was good. The atmosphere is great and quite romantic.
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
Absolutely gorgeous place. Beautifully prepared French cuisine with a home style feel. Hands down the best muscles I have eaten served with the crunchiest fries and creamy homemade mayo. Highly recommend the pork loin chop as a main. Our waitress, Savannah, made it a most enjoyable experience. Cannot wait to come back.
KarmaZebra
Having been to this restaurant previously during load shedding, (they have gas so were still able to prepare a few meals - good to know!!) I was very underwhelmed and actually a bit reluctant to dine here again. As I was out-voted by the rest of my dining party I went along for a second attempt and was pleasantly surprised! The food was flawless! Perfect size, flavours and textures, across the board, from meat to fish to salad.
Point deductions: it was a very warm evening and I felt slightly claustrophobic inside the cosy bistro (it would have been wonderful in winter), the wine was also not quite chilled enough for the conditions. Our waitress was unfortunately also slightly over confident, almost bordering on arrogant, which left a bit of bad taste in my mouth.
Lynzi Bee
A French gem on the Parkhurst strip. I just love the classy atmosphere, the beautiful French look and feel of the decor and the charm it gives off. The food is just amazing, classic flavorful dishes. Everything we have had is always delicious, cannot fault it. They have a great selection of wine and the dessert is worth a sneaky treat. The restaurant is small, which actually adds to its charm. Highly recommend for a date night, be sure to book in advance.
Maryke Foulds
Whatever you do, don't order the Bouillabaisse. Tasted like tomato stew with marinara mix thrown in. When I complained the the waiter and the manager they were very non-committal. Our table for eight was so close to the bar that we couldn't move in or out properly. After looking forward to eating at this restaurant, we all left feeling done in and very disappointed.
Joburg Lawyer
This happens to be my favourite Parkhurst restaurant. Best tables are inside the restaurant to check out the decor. Their seafood linguine takes first prize. Also great wine selection.
Guillermo Van Veen
My only regret about Bistro Vine is that the place is so small and that it can be hard to get a table.

The crispy duck is great, the wine list is also great (although the French wines are rather overpriced).

The service is efficient and reliable.

Definitely one of my shortlisted restaurants.
Simon Trollope
Nice little restaurant on a busy and popular street! Tables outside and inside, although inside is pretty small, which makes it nice. On a warm evening, I'd definitely pick outside though! The meal was great! It felt a bit overpriced for what you got but still enjoyable. Too bad they didn't have the snails that night that everyone talks about on the reviews, was keen. Overall a nice restaurant, good selection of wines!
No Time To Waste
Quality restaurant with European flair. This place is always full, so plan ahead and make a reservation.

Food is really good! It's cozy and pleasant.
Had steak and chips numerous times along with mussels and they were always good.

I would definitely recommend it
Gareth Bladon
One of the few real restaurants on the 4th Avenue strip. Def one to tick off on your Jozi been-there list.

Menu is diverse and wine list very good (range of French wines if that matters to you). The food's French theme makes is different from the usual glorified steak that most restaurants have on offer.

The place is intimate - expect to be sitting very close to neighbouring tables so not great if you want to have a private conversation (though when booking you could ask for a more discreet table).

Service is very good - I've never had any issues. Often filled up so book in advance.
Tamzin
Quaint little spot that I probably would have rated higher if the manager had dealt with a small situation our table experienced better. Other meals were all good, although I really expected the lamb shoulder to be more flavorful. Their chips are delicious! t's a warm cosy atmosphere with knowledgeable waitrons.
Marina Loubser
A cosy spot that prides itself on good wines and is refuge for good French food amongst the pizza, pasta, burger smorgasbord on 4th ave. the restaurant has a lovely ambience and the staff are knowledgable and fun. Highly recommend this spot!
Ashley Truscott
Very disappointing meal tonight. The braised lamb was tasteless and arrived on a heap of mash and beans, with no thought whatsoever given to presentation. However, the ambience was warm and cosy on a cold winter's night.
Michelle Rossouw Pérez Cerquetella
One of my favourite restaurants in Jo'burg! A fantastic (and extensive) wine list of both local and French wines to compliment their exquisite menu. A lovely ambience; the relatively small size of the restaurant allows for a warm and personal feel. I go fairly regularly and I have never experienced anything but excellent and friendly service, plus all of the waiters are very knowledgeable and attentive.
Their snails (when available) are an absolute MUST, but then, so are quite a few of the other things 👌🏼
Tshepi M
One the best places in Parkhurst. It's warm and cosy. It reminded me of Franschoek. They have the best wine selection both local and French. The food was amazing. The duck was perfectly done, the oysters were fresh and the pans cotta was smooth, not too heavy. The service is amazing this place is amazing.
Charlize Morgan
This hidden gem in Parkhurst - a warm, intimate little restaurant - serves provincial-style French cuisine at its best. The snails starter special was perhaps the best snails I have ever tasted, although these aren't always available. And the mussels main course and chocolate panna cotta dessert special were just perfect. Furthermore, they boast an extensive wine list and the service was good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and it is suitable for families too. It loses out on the last .5 out of 5 stars to me, because it is quite pricey... Yet worth every cent! P.S. Remember to make a reservation beforehand to ensure a table.

We had made our reservation for a Celebratory lunch on a Sunday. Food was very delicious with ample portion sizes. The waitress who served us was very knowledgable about the menu including the wine that would be suited to each meal. Had a calm and relaxed atmosphere and added to the already awesome experience with our friends.

Three of us went there for Sunday lunch on a chilly winter afternoon. The promise of this bistro was terrific - super decor, a cozy setting and a ridiculously tempting menu made all the tantalising by the addition of some irresistible specials. Good wine list, delightful service.

The meal started out well with a shared wild mushroom starter from the specials menu which none of us had expected to order but yielded to - delicious. Then the restaurant was hit by load shedding and it slowed the kitchen to a crawl. Most fingers had to wait about an hour for the next course.

As our capable waitress advised, although they have gas capability, they are unable to fry anything as it smokes out the restaurant. I had a guinea fowl special; the protein was ok (I've never had this bird before but am convinced it could have been less dry), but the spinach and sweet potato base was outstanding - I would have it on its own. My friend had the salmon and seemed to enjoy it. My other friend had the braised lamb and while he found the texture good, the meal itself was far too salty.

Because the power was still off, we couldn't have coffees and decided instead to share a lemongrass pannacotta, which was utterly delicious.

I would go back as there are a number of dishes I would still like to try, and the overall experience was terrific. I don't think it's fair to judge their performance based on a load shedding afternoon.

One of the best places to eat great french food and drink lots of wine. Atmosphere is very french with effortless sophistication. Eaten there twice and both times just simply delicious. Probably my favourite place on 4th avenue. It is somewhat expensive but definitely worth it.

Always have the best romantic time here and is my go to recommended place if you want cozy intimate excellent service and food. And the chocolate torte is to die for. As the food is rich we generally frequent when it's colder

This is a quaint little restaurant on the 4th avenue strip in parkhurst. It isn't the biggest on the trip, but that adds to it charm and atmosphere and gets it apart from the main stream places. The service is always attentive and friendly. The menu is great and food delicious. Its a great place in the middle of joburg, so don't miss it.

Superb. From the lovely waiting staff to the food which was so delicious and rich. The duck pate with cranberry jelly converted my husband who hates meat pâtés and between the moule frites(best frites ever) and the pork belly with calamari and chorizo, this place pretty much shut the clurb down.
Meagan Whitehorn
A small quaint french restaurant on the parkhurst strip. Limited tables so you should book in advance. My meat eating husband really loved the food especially the mussels and the fillet. For vegetarians the options are limited and the pasta option did not blow my mind. Anycase i guess the french are not really known for their vegetarian expertise.

In my book, if someone can cook up a good sauce he/she is a master chef. From the
delicate Asian curry sauce (incorporating about 40 ingredients according to our waitress) accompanied by delightful prawns and avo to start, to the delicious rich bitey
dressing of the porkbelly-calamari-chorizo mains, to the sensual buttery almond gravy of the poached pear, Bistro Vine does not disappoint. While a handwritten list of some 57 french and SA wines and champagnes, the daily specials and Coco Chanel stare down at me from the walls - take me there anytime. After many years of patronage, still my favourite restaurant in Joburg.@

Very friendly and efficient service. DELICIOUS FOOD!!

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon without a reservation and they were more than happy to accommodate us. I would however recommend that you reserve a table. The restaurant is tiny and fills up very VERY quickly!

Tables are close to one another, but I loved it. Created a very cozy/homely atmosphere.

Decor very simple stylish bistro/cafe-ish.

Stunning selection of local and French wines. Very reasonably priced as well.

The food was out of this world. We had a seafood pasta and a bowl of mussels in a white wine and cream sauce. We asked the waitress if we could order a whole baguette for our table (as we are bread freaks, and no meal is a worthy meal without bread!) and they were more than happy to do that.

Perfect restaurant for a first date, anniversary or taking a SMALL group of friends to, OR just for an impromptu (yummy) lunch or dinner for two.

Our bill came to about R600 for two main courses, a whole bread, bottle of mid range white wine and a bottle of smanshy sparkling water.

Certainly one of those little gems that we are proud to call one of our favorites :)

The service was slow to start with, waited 10 minutes before we had our drinks. Order the oysters for starters which was awesome. We had the line fish for mains. Was also great. Overall a decent experience, pity about the slow service at the start which was rectified once we spoke to the waiter

The restaurant is small and romantic, a nice change to the normal big chain restaurants. I had the Fillet Bordleise, which was extremely tender and delicious, but served with cannelloni beans, which I thought a strange combo. I must comment on the French fries which are some of the best I've eaten! The chocolate brownie for dessert was treat heaven and definitely big enough to share! Will definitely be coming back Chris Ballie Yannakakis

It is a true bistro.
It is lovely to sit on the pavement and sip ones wine. The wine list is good as is the food.
The ambience is lovely and one can almost imagine one is in France.
Service was excellent. I don't think I've had better anywhere.
I must go back there.
Philippe
Very nice restaurant , my steak tartare was done perfectly.
Service good.
Good French wine selection.
A bit disappointed with the salmon it was cold And my wife had to send it back.
Went here on Valentines Day. So we were treated to a smaller menu of three courses. Everything was delicious and the service was also on point. Will definitely return to try some more offerings. The wine list is also extensive and the lemon tart is a must!

Excellent and extensive wine list. Great ambience and a food menu that is the perfect length! Their mussels are excellent, as is any variation of the pork belly. All desserts will satisfy your sweet tooth. And they are incredibly accommodating of any food allergies you may suffer from.
Cleo Logue
Such a cozy, romantic spot. The wine menu is absolutely outstanding. The food is great for cold winter evenings - it's beautifully prepared but rather rib-sticking. Bookings are essential for this quaint little gem.

Very nice wine and vibe. Friendly and tentative staff. Good choice of dishes on the menu. Looking forward to poached pear for desert! Will be back!!

Was at Bistro V, last night. Was really a lovely experience. Great wine selection, brie phyllo pastry starter was so tasty, salmon main was one of the best I've had in JHB. Menu offered a lot, and all sounded delicious, will have to go back to try it all!!
Chris Greensmith
The duck liver pate starter and moules et frites remind me of when I lived in Paris. Starters and mains are fabulous if you're looking for great French bistro style cuisine. And the wine list is pretty good too. Deserts are a rather disappointing unfortunately (else I would've scored a little higher) but you can fill up on the first two courses and then just have a coffee and Cointreau :)
Brittany Wallace
I absolutely love french cuisine and was excited to try a new french bistro since we don't have many in johannesburg. I attended for the valentines day special, R400 a head. The food was seriously good. The highlight of the evening was the duck confit that I had for my main. I had never tried duck therefore I was nervous, luckily it was amazing. The bitter lemon tart was also to die for. Overall the service, food and management was amazing and I would recommend that you give bistro vine a try if you haven't yet.
Andrea Herman
Very impressed with the service and food!! Definitely will be going back. The starters were amazing the main was incredible. Didn't have desert unfortunately but will be going back for it
Mcredible
Such a charming place! Can't fault them on anything! Went there recently for the first time and what a pleasant surprise! Very romantic and quaint - book in advance. Good selection of french wines. We had chicken liver starters, probably the best I've ever had, and even used the chicken liver sauce with the relish that was served with the oysters. Lamb and fillets were cooked superbly and we'll definitely go back. Love the french arty pictures and friendly, efficient waitrons. My favourite part was the white chocolate cheesecake with grilled pineapple :)

Great Food, lovely ambiance, Wonderful service!

I would definitely recommend them! :)

Indeed a lovely and charming French style bistro in Parkhurst. The service was good: our waitress was a lovely and friendly lady. She assisted in choosing the perfect wine, but poured the first glass and left the rest up to us. Also, she only came back to the table to clear our plates and did not confirm whether we were happy with our meal until we had already finished eating.

We were not happy at all. My previous experiences were sublime, but this one left us very disappointed. After much deliberation on what to choose, we both went for the "Fillet medallions with goose liver pâté and crostini served on spinach and mushrooms covered with a Port jus". It sounded different and irresistible. The taste didn't nearly meet our expectations: it was bland with no hint of port.

R600 for a bottle of wine, two glasses of tap water and two main dishes is rather expensive, but if the meal was as tasty as it should have been we would not have minded.

I doubt am I will go back, which is a pity as it is such a nice setting.

A lovely and charming French style bistro in Parkhurst. Never been disappointed with their food or service. Perfect for a romantic date - bookings recommended as it only seats about 60 diners. Fantastic wine list - with a vast selection of French wines available too. The traditional boullebaise seafood stew is excellent and the bistro salad is always a perfect starter.
Fillet medallions with goose liver pâté and crostini served on spinach and mushrooms - excellent winter special. Definitely one of the most under rated restaurants in Johannesburg. Very reasonably priced. A Must visit!

This is a lovely little gem in the middle of Parkhurst. Be sure to book ahead of time though as it does get full very quickly. There are a lot of great dishes on the menu, I had the Steak Frites which was absolutely delicious and tender. As i have a sweet tooth, it was so difficult to choose 1 dessert and i opted for 2. I had the salted caramel ice cream and the Belgium chocolate tart- words cannot describe the intense happiness my tummy felt. They also have a wide variety of local and international wine. I spoke about it weeks after and plan on going bake to try the mussels soon!

Had a great evening here. Great confit of duck, stunning salads and tempting specials. The wine was great: wonderful selection of french wines including some lovely Chablis and icy cold Dom. The waitress was super!
Andy Mac
Although slightly overrated and a somewhat snotty hostess. ..the French influence will make me go back. French Fried Funk!
Thuli Mari
I had lunch at this place with my mother. I was quite excited for the food as I had never eaten here before. I was disappointed with the duck they served me. The meat was dry -like sand- and the meal failed to come with a sauce. The duck lacked flavor and tasted mostly like salt. To me this was a poor attempt at cooking French Cuisine and an insult to duck lovers.
Wikus Du Toit
Had a great meal. Special called Pork vs Pork. Pork 3 ways. Pretty amazing. Good service. Great menu. Wonderful service.
Extensive French wine list.
Pierre Le Grange
Had Sunday lunch. 2 sirloins sent back due to meat being horribly tough. Fillet steak replacements took forever to come out again. Food not bad, service leaves much to be desired.

I took my husband here for a birthday, and was hoping for a romantic setting based on the photos I saw. It is a really cute little place, but hey, it is busy! I have a feeling they are trying to squeeze in a bit too many people....
However, the food and service was beyond excellent, therefor a high score. I had the Salmon starter and my husband a goats cheese salad special. For mains I had an enormous Mussle pot with fries, it was very tasty. The husband had a fillet-special, perfectly done.
Unfortunately it started raining and they brought people sitting outside in, and we were all squeezed in even more, and then a heatwave struck us, and wasn't so nice anymore. A bit too cozy I think?
In my opinion it is a brilliant little Bistro, but they are harming the experience by trying to squeeze in as many people as possible. But i will try again one day!

I would recommend you avoid this restaurant if you are a vegetarian. There is one dish on the menu, ratatouille - which is not a favourite of mine.
The manager offered to make me a vegetarian pasta - which when it arrived was a pasta covered in a sauce of carrots, onion & celery - which in french cooking is a base for sauces, a mirepoix - not a pasta sauce.
For this I was charged R89.00.
However, all that being said, if you are a carnivore - I have only heard good things about their food.
Herbivores - stay away.
Marijke Louise
Fantastic food well worth the price. I have never had all three courses be as absolutely phenomenal as these were .Thumbs up

Such yummy food at Bistro Vine combined with the affordable French wine - in this case a Chablis - makes for one of my best places. Atmosphere is great as real French bistro. Great service as well. Not too many complaints from me!
