Review The Foundry - Johannesburg

Ilona Smith
Absolutely amazing!! Their food is mouthwatering delicious and they drinks are lovely. I had the pork ribs and they are officially my favorite. I also had their cocktail, "a cup a tea, please." and it was super delicious and I loved the presentation of the drink. The place has such a great vibe and atmosphere and I was so happy to spend my birthday here. It was so special that they brought me a desert and sang for me too. I would Defineitly recommend this place and I cannot wait to return to it.

Had my parents meet my in-laws the first time here. Helpful friendly staff, DELICIOUS food, decent portions, and very well priced. Jem of a restaurant, definitely coming back. The orb shots were so cool!
Apelo “Allumi” Nene
Friendly service staff, good & tasty proportions that are reasonably priced (also, I absolutely loved the onion rings!) The cup-a-tea-please is too cute. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. Makes sense why this place has been around for so long.

The Foundry, according to the talk of the town some say its been around forever - which is impressive. It's one of the few places that open on a Monday, so if crowds aren't your vibe this day is your day! A fantastic place with a great atmosphere, and the back wall is a rustic art piece that should be admired. The menu is short but complex that offers a lot on it. I've only experienced amazing food and cocktails (hint: the teapot for the gin lovers😉) here. The small details like very different plates and designs for your different courses, and meals is a cool idea that I appreciate. It's a place you have to try if you come to this area often...😎

Great neighborhood restaurant with a mixed menu and tasty beer list. We had the burger and a 1/2 kilo of ribs and enjoyed a few pints. The service was great and the restaurant had a nice outdoor patio to relax and soak up some sun.

Fantastic; we had a late lunch here, and it was amazing. I had the pork belly, and my partner had the fish and chips. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the lunch, the service was great in a really nice relaxing environment. I'd definitely recommend coming here and look forward to coming back (p.s definitely order the pork belly).

I really loved this place. The ribs were fantastic (and cheap in comparison to other restaurants) and the staff were very helpful and friendly. It’s on a great street with lots of other activities - the weekend that I went there there was a weekend market (stack 32 I think) where there were food stalls, a live band and some lovely thrift stalls too.

Foundry has a cool bar area and nice restaurant, gets quite vibey and has a new menu, we opted for the sharing platter which was a meat feast with sticky ribs, tangy wings, succulent pork belly strips, lamb koftas and pumpkin fritters. Was decent. Grwat selection of beers local and craft as well as cocktails and wines. Screens for sport and a great spot to meet up or take in a long slow lunch or dinner.

This place had amazing food. I came here after my friend suggested it and I was not disappointed. The menu had a lot to choose from and everything sounded great. I chose pork belly in the end and i did not regret. The picture is partially eat version because once it came I was entranced by the smell and started eating immediately. I will definitely be returning to try other meals here.

Ambience: Stunning view of the road when seated outside. Great service, lovely staff aaaand they had individually wrapped “napkins” to wipe your hands at the end of your meal 👌🏾👌🏾 Food: I had their buttermilk chicken burger special for R60. Such a bargain and it comes with a side of chips 🤗. Special runs daily from 12pm till 4pm (do double check on their Instagram page, might’ve changed) Drinks: Had a lovely Gin and Pink tonic cocktail (+\- R85) in a tea pot, super cute 😍 Will definitely be popping in again 💃🏾

Fantastic vibe, live music, awesome food and a beer and wine selection of note. Put this on your to do list.

Fantastic food, amazing service and awesome atmosphere.

Very pleasant restaurant. The beer is great. Would go again. Avoid sitting outside on the ledge as it's a great opportunity for a grab and run with your valuables.

Wow!! My first time at The Foundry and was a good experience! Enjoyed the 'The big Lebowski' cocktail and that jelly on the side - wow burst in your mouth! Then the 'Tasteboard' was also good- enjoyed the mixture, the wings and the pumpkin Fruita was Devine! We shall be back most definitely!

I had my 1st introduction to Foundry on Saturday, met Georgie, very friendly barman & his tongue tantalising shooters

The food was great, nice atmosphere, excellent service!

Loved it! Great ambience, great food, slightly on the expensive side but worth every cent.

Really sad - this was one of our go to restaurants pre Covid. But tonight’s meal was really not good. Fish was dry, pizzas no where near the quality they used to be, chicken dishes mediocre. They used to have the most amazing chocolate marquise and now it’s grainy and lacks refinement. No manager to be seen, the waiter could not assist with wine choices. Just no longer worth the money. Judging by the quality of food they no longer have a chef but merely a cook.

Bill of R525 left tip of R75, instead of R600 waiter charged R1000 to my card. Had to go back to resolve the issue with the manager. Waiter says it was a mistake. Please be very careful with your bill at this restuarant

There is nothing in particular at fault with Perron. But I probably would go back and here's why. When we arrived, the waiter seemed kinda confused about seating us. We then waited quite a while for our order to be taken and for our food to arrive. Once it all arrive, it was quite mediocre. Theres not much more to it.
Wendy
After specifically alerting my waiter to the fact that I’m allergic to dairy, my peas arrived and as it turns out they had melted butter on them. Thanks to the fact that I took a forkful in my mouth and couldn’t spit them out I have had to deal with the aftermath of ingesting dairy. If the waitering and kitchen staff are not aware that butter is made from cows milk, then management have not educated their staff adequately. Besides this, the menu does not have a single vegan option, which in this day and age is unacceptable. I won’t be going back

Ambience: I love this place. It's a great place for after-work drinks or meet up with friends.

Service: Really nice service. Our waiter was very attentive. And everyone else was very helpful.

Food: The food is good, value for money. I can't get over the dessert "Blondie" it tasted better than I had imagined.
Ewa Fabris
Loved the old menu so much, there were a number of my absolute favourites on there like the steak tartare. Went back last week and was devastated to find the menu had changed to more of a pub menu.
Chris De Beer
I just love this place , great selection of beer , decent cocktails list ( that long island is strong but so gud ) . The meat platter we had was decent , the pork belly was boring and under seasoned but the rest was really good and tasty . Just a great chilled venue .

Had a business lunch at Foundry, ordered the roast chicken...the chicken was tasteless and dry. Service was good, drinks were great, should maybe have sent it back, but when you're pressed for time, it's not really an option....maybe better luck next time.

Lovely warm place. Warm friendly people. Great food. I love the prawns feast and they were delicious. didn’t take long to get them as they were on special. 16 king prawns which makes a kilo... wow. It was a feast. And Delish... Will go back certainly

Had no problem with booking a table for 5 which was done 2 hours prior to arrival.

Indoor and outdoor seating with a pubbjsh/vibey atmosphere and a huge screen - so when there is a big game I am guessing that they are quite
packed.

Has a substantial drinks menu - Loved the ginger cocktail I ordered . My choice was the gnocchi ratatouille which I regretted - it was so bland and lacked salt. When the manager came over to ask about the food - I did not expect a response like that - “I could bring you some sauce or chilli for you to add it to your food otherwise there is nothing we can do, she brought me commercial bottled sauces. Another waiter asked me why did I eat so little - he then said he will take it off my bill.

The rest of the dishes were average.

Let me try to cover all important aspects:

Service: A warm welcome at the door, our waitress was attentive to us, and the rest of staff was friendly when we left.

Ambiance: We were there on a soccer game night, but you could hardly tell. No one was loud - just friend groups and couples enjoying each other's company in the dimly lit restaurant.

Food: I picked the "Vegan Rainbow Bowl" among the vegan options, and a side of fries. That meal hit the right spot! I'm impressed that they had a tofu bowl (a lot of restaurants don't) and I like that they included a some vegan dishes on the menu.

Drinks: We had the "Cup a Tea, Please" gin cocktail, which comes in a teapot. So cute!

An overall wonderful evening, all factors considered. I'll definitely visit again!

Celebrated dads 60th here with a Sunday lunch. Great vibe in the restaurant as always. Enjoyed zucchini fritters and olives as table starters. The fritters were SO good! Three of us were plant based and were greeted with a few options (hooray) - we all had the rainbow bowl, picture attached. Unanimous call that it was UNREAL. dad enjoyed some fish and chips and mom had the salmon both of which went down a treat.
Service wasn’t tip top but nonetheless a very enjoyable afternoon!

such a beautiful gem that is nicely located. the restaurant is very inviting & has beautiful aesthetics. we went there for drinks & their selection was absolutely amazing. a definite chill spot from now onwards.
Lilian Du Plessis
The food is amazing, especially the mussels and the pork belly. Lovely array of cocktails and particularly enjoyed the gin tea pot. Amazing atmosphere and always a good amount of people there. Staff are amazing.
Tammy
Ordered the pulled pork and chorizo pizza as well as the mushroom ravioli. The pizza was fantastic. Lovely crispy base and great flavour combinations. The ravioli was a let down. The pasta was too thick and stodgy and the dish was too oily. Service however was fantastic, as usual.
Casey K
A lovely afternoon. Love the cocktails. Menu is a bit limited for my liking but the meal was great, I had the steak. Great service and a fun afternoon.
Katlego Mohlala
I don’t think this is a place you come back to for the food. It was so underwhelming.
It has a cool vibe for drinks though. Although they hardly had juice, they said they had the cranberry juice they used as a chaser for the cocktails. I think it was just that day
Nalinee Soobramoney
Vibey gastro-pub. Fabulous food , fabulous cocktails and fabulous waitrons - big ups to Princess for her pleasant nature and efficient service. Fun place to get a Friday nite pre-party celebration off the ground. Prawn burger was the best by far. Steaks done to perfection. Mussels - a must try. And you have to have a Big Lebowski - the only way to kick off the evening at The Foundry.
Monique Le Roux
Went for a girls lunch after some shopping and t was great! Friendly service, great atmosphere and delicious food & cocktails! Will definitely go back for more! Another Parktown North Gem!

I was at The Foundry recently, and yeah this is not about the food but the nice times . Had the cream tea gin extravaganza and was initially perturbed when it can in a teapot. Needless to say it was good but as a lover of gins, I found it rather ‘light’. So on a sports night you’re obviously going to snack a lot so me and my “where are we meeting “ partner had ribs , chicken , beef (now this was our favourite) and calamari. Not a complicated menu, it is what it is - that’s my new favorite line ! Lol ! It’s your favourite sports pub kinda vibes so if that’s what you’re looking for , you’re gonna love it !
Pei-Lin Chen
My fiancé and his friends love this place for their craft beers. I love it for the tapas food! Ha ha ha... the food is really gourmet for a pub like place and really vibey with people.
Supervundu
Yum. Had a great dinner at The Foundry last Friday. The service was excellent on a very busy night. The food was rad - my wife and I shared the pulled pork and chorizo pizza and the mushroom ravioli which where both nommers. We had a table of 7, and everything went off without a hitch. Totally going back.

One of my best hangout spots in Jhb. The artisan drinks here are amazing. The food is also great. They have great decor & serving platters are beautiful

Lovely atmosphere and an original menu. Well prepared food is tasty. Friendly and prompt service . Good for families and (In our case) a motherday lunch. Very good

I love this place. The menu has decent variety, ranging from fancy main course dishes to awesome burgers and excellent pizzas. This makes it a good place to bring a mixed group of people with unknown or diverse preferences - everybody is sure to find something they like. My favourite dishes include the charcuterie (excellent as something to a couple of friends to snack on while hanging out and drinking whatever), the pork belly, seared tuna and the burger. The bar is well stocked, the wine list is decent and they do several delicious cocktails. There is also a dedicated bar section if you just want to have a drink. The style is relaxed and casual - no need to dress up for this place. Seating inside or outside next to the street. Parking can be scarce at peak times, although there is a big parking area at the back of the shopping centre. That doesn’t really bother me, as I will always drink when I come here, so Uber is my friend.
Shàmai-Sassy Khan
I felt this is more of a drinks place than food.
The menu didn't really cater to much that I liked, even in terms of finger foods. If you enjoy a noisy environment to have drinks it's fine but we couldn't hear our conversations within the table. Nonetheless is was in a nice area, nice setup and good service.
Xola
From entering the door you can almost taste the awesome experience waiting for you. From the cocktails to the food, everything is so rich, tasty and tangy its just absolutely amazing. That was my probably my 3rd visit at the establishment and never my last.
Talya Basche
I go here for the bone marrow starter which is always unbelievable! But the main was a very dry ravioli pasta and the dessert had no flavor at all. There is a wide variety of drinks and the service was good but I wouldn’t return for a meal.
Cayla Riley
Absolutely love going to the Foundry , the food is just wonderful and tasty and super creative. The whole atmosphere is great and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It’s definitely a must .
Karen Heese
Good meals from diverse menu; I had mussels, my husband pork, daughters salad and burger - all tasty. Friendly service. Generous children’s portions.

I found the food at the Foundry very delightful. Service of the highest quality. I can see why the restaurant is a multi award-winning restaurant. The trophy wife cocktail is the best cocktail I've ever had. Blue cheese burgers from sourdough Pizza; everything is 10 out of 10. The panna cotta dessert 20 out of 10. RCS

The most delicious ravioli! And great pizza too. Service was good too. Nice open air deck and bar area. Worth a visit as is reasonably priced.

Great place to go on a Sunday for lunch...
they do a Sunday roast which you see on the spit at the entrance which just draws you in;) delicious!!! Good service and friendly waiters.
Kudzai Maeresa
One of my favorite places. Love the location and the food is not bad. I also love the transition from quiet late afternoons to a nice proper pub din in the evening. You don't really go wrong with this place.

Thanks, place is great! Good vibes!
Food was excellent. Will be coming soon again with friends! Enjoyed it thoroughly! Th me bartenders are excellent (George)!!!

The Foundry, Parktown North

EATERY

LOCATION: 7 Parktown Quarter, 3rd Avenue, Parktown North, Johannesburg. Secure parking available behind the restaurant.

DRINKS: We sampled a variety of aperitifs, craft beers and home-made roasted coffees in this rustic look bar and eatery. Our favourites are the Gin Blossom (not on the menu) a potion made from Whitley Neill Protea & Hibiscus Gin (This flavoured variant is exclusively available in South Africa, inspired by the wild & natural beauty of the African landscape, it is also a handcrafted gin of exceptional quality), the Gin Blossom also included Ginger Tangerine Tea, Fitch & Leeds Tonic and Lime. This delectable, refreshingly creative mix was flavourful and colourful. So ask for it when you visit. Cup a Tea, Please, this aperitif can actually be shared with 3 other people besides yourself, it poured out 4 glasses. Presented in a stylish, black metal tea pot and a glass which held an infused cucumber ice ball made it an interesting drink (a combination of Strawberry & Cream Tea Reduction yumm, Lime, Inverroche Fynbos Gin, Fitch & Leed’s Tonic). Refreshing. The Big Lebowski, presented with a pink jello shooter and a slice of lime. This beautiful and delicious pink concoction was a combination of the perfect amount of Lavender Cordial, Vanilla Vodka, Martini Extra Dry & Bianco and Lime. Every cocktail we explored was colourful, interesting and divine.
Beers : The Foundry offers a beer tasting paddle. This is the perfect to way to explore their huge selection of craft beers. Some of the craft beers we explored were : Naked Mexican, Dragon Ginger Beer, CBC Amber Weiss and Franky Four Fingers (yes, named after the fictional character from the movie SNATCH, whose a criminal with a gambling problem; they extremely inventive and creative at The Foundry, this easy to drink, light weiss is The Foundry’s very own craft beer and a MUST HAVE). The Foundry has a true appreciation of beers, there are a wide selection of wit bier, dunkel, stout, cider, ale, Weiss, pilsner, saison, pale ale, lambic, amber ale and lager. The Foundry’s bar is fully stocked.

APPETIZERS/HORS D’OEUVRE/STARTERS: Tuna Ceviche Tacos – Sprinkled with bright, orange Trout Caviar this dish has 4 crunchy, mini tacos filled with fresh tuna sashimi, avocado, sesame oil & wasabi mayo. A light meal all on its own and perfect for the summer season.

ENTRÉE/MAINS: Pork Belly and Cider Bacon Jam – I generally don’t order PORK in restaurants but I was feeling adventurous on the day. This beautifully presented dish. Made me realise never to be closed minded ever again about any of my previous experiences elsewhere; and always be willing to try out new flavours. Served with crackling, lime pumpkin, macadamia bacon chutney, potato fondant, wilted greens and pickled APPLE. Must be how the forbidden APPLE tasted to Adam and Eve. All the elements came together perfectly. A pretty dish, Art on a plate. MUST TRY!!

Fillet & Bone Marrow – 250g Beef Fillet, Potato Fondant, wilted greens, charred black mushrooms, red wine jus. Firstly, who doesn’t love a perfectly cooked fillet? I personally love the bone marrow. Every element was seasoned to well.

All mains we tried were bursting with a variety of flavours, with the perfect seasoning. All meals are colourful, there is a great deal of technique and precise used in their dishes, which must be celebrated.

DESSERT/SWEETS: Dark Chocolate Fondant – A beautifully baked fondant, with ginger biscuit crumble, vanilla gelato topped with fresh mint garnish, strawberry jam and fresh strawberries.

Dark Chocolate Marquise – Mascarpone, chocolate pistachio soil and SALTED caramel. This is my favourite dessert. I loved the flavours and textures. It all comes down to the perfect combinations. Taste was Spectacular!

AMBIENCE: Well a “Foundry” in general, is a space slightly darker than usual place. So in keeping with the theme the lighting is a bit darker; which suited me just fine. The bar and eatery was buzzing with patrons. There seem to be different types of individuals at The Foundry, corporates, casuals, young, not so young.. It’s a place everyone can enjoy!

SEATING: There is an outdoor seating section if you prefer more light. The table sizes varied. There are different defined areas to the eatery; the bar area and dining area. Bookings are essential, even though The Foundry is already 5 years old. This place gets full and quickly.

HANDS: As I walked in, I was greeted with friendly, attentive smiles. My waiter Brian, was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. Ask for him, when you visit, nice guy. The GM of The Foundry, Andrew Norton formerly from a corporate environment loves this vibey environment. Andrew is professional, energetic, friendly, talkative and a total down to earth, approachable guy.

ART: The art on the main wall, is a wall sculpture; the idea was spotted by the streetsmart, visionary co owner Gary Hollywood. In the depiction there is a man; a solitary walker, walking the streets of New York City (we can see The Brooklyn Bridge). The streets seemed almost deserted. He is the main focus of this artwork; although we can also deduct the picture is also about city life. In this image you can’t see the MYSTERIOUS man’s face (his back is turned) so we can’t tell what sort of mood he is in, where he is going to, or coming from. We just notice his posture. Maybe he is coming back from a real Foundry (a sort of work place), maybe from a celebration; or going to one!!…You tell me what you think!

VERDICT: Thank you for an amazing experience The FOUNDRY, from the aperitifs to the desserts to the main wall artwork every element was thought about in-depth. It was a wonderful experience (food, drinks, staff, the company) and best of all the flavours on the menu was not only delivered but exceeded my expectations.
Simon Green
Absolutely amazing, the vibe, the food and the service really world class!!! A must for anyone to come and try really will make your night. Will definitely be back to try everything on the menu.
Diana Mak
We had terrible service here. Came here for a birthday meal which a reservation was made in advance. When we arrived, the waiter said that we did not make a booking and there's no table for a large group of us (about 16 people). Luckily we remembered the name of manager who took down the reservation details, we asked to see him and as he came he realised that he didn't write it down! He then asked if we could wait by the bar for 5 minutes while they organises a table for us. About 15mins passes we finally heading to our table ... we were squeezed into the corner, not enough chairs (or tables for that matter). Finally the night came to an end, we all paid our part of the bill (tip included) and we all started to leave... The waiter then comes running up to us saying that we didn't give her a large enough tip!! This was really upsetting as they firstly refused to seat us, then gave us a corner space that was clearly too small for our group and we had to eat on top of each other AND THEN say we didn't tip enough?? Even though the food wasn't bad, but for the price we paying and the poor service that we get in return, I don't see myself coming back here.

Went their for a birthday lunch, and despite booking a table, had to be sat elsewhere. Unfortunately for the restaurant, I always get what I want and after a brief and polite chat with the manager we were moved to my original table of choice. We were given some Citrus Olives for nibbles as a consolation while we waited for our table to be sorted out - bribery with food, always works out! But despite this very small hiccup, we had a really great lunch! The bubbles and wine were flowing. The service was great. We had the Roasted Marrow Bones and Chilli Wings for starters - a real lip-smacking meat feast. I love being able to play with food by putting bits of the dish together and then scoffing it down. We then opted to share one of the Moules Pots (mussels) for mains. If i can give you one word of advice when it comes to eating here - please try the Thai style mussels with some ciabatta for dipping into sauce! (I just looked longingly into the distance of Foundry after typing that). Dessert - my favourite: Affagato. Dessert and coffee in one. Boom!

PS. Other recommendations are definitely the Asian Beef salad, which I have been threatening to eat for the past few months. Along with the Charcuterrie and Formagie boards - Masterchef yourself.
Wayne Henry
The restaurant was very rustic in its appearance and has an awesome wall scene sculpted, I found the chairs a little tiring and uncomfortable on my buttocks.

Our waitress was sweet but not particularly helpful and had to go ask questions from "whoever" before she could answer us, had she had any label saying "in training" I might have been forgiving.

There is an ambience of familiarity or convenience and my thoughts are that this would be the reason for the restaurant being as busy as it was or is, the reason I say this because of the following reasons; parking is problematic, the pricing of the food and alcohol are pricey to say the least, there was no management who paid any attention to us at out table.

I had a pork belly dish that was lovely however between that & the bottle of wine we purchased, I struggled to justify the cost.

In short for myself I did not enjoy the occasion...
Portia
Great gastropub located in the Parktown area. A cost spot ideal for casual dining. As fan of a good gin and tonic, I am truly impressed by their G&T creation: 'Cup A Tea, Please' made of an intelligent concoction of Inverroche, tonic, strawberry and cream tea, lime and a cucumber ice ball.
COLOURFUL & TASTY DISHES | GREAT BEER SELECTION

We were invited to enjoy a lunch at Foundry and try some of the dishes and beers on offer! Foundry has become a popular staple in the Parktown North restaurant scene over the past few years, and this year they will celebrate their 5th Birthday!

LOCATION:
Parktown Corner, 3rd Ave, JHB. Secure parking is available.

ATMOSPHERE:
There is a vibey atmosphere with a mix of neighbourhood regulars, newcomers, and tables big and small. The big screen tv was on ahead of the big rugby game that day, adding to the atmosphere. We just found the low light in the restaurant area made it seem
rather dark inside.

SEATING:
There is restaurant seating both inside and outside, and also a large bar area should you be coming just for some drinks and snacks.

DRINKS:
A fully stocked bar with a huge range of craft beers. Foundry even offers a beer taster paddle. This is a great way to experience as many of the craft beers as you want! Some of the notable brews we enjoyed included:
- Franky Four Fingers: light, easy to drink Weiss
- Dragon Ginger Beer: sweet & yummy
- Devils Peak King Blockhouse: fruity aroma, strong taste on the palate
- Jack Black Atlantic Weiss: smooth, tasty & easy to drink

STAFF:
We were served by Richie, who has been at Foundry since the beginning! His knowledge of the menu and the different beers was fantastic and he took very good care of us.

MAINS:

TASTING BOARD
Chilli Wings, Baby Back Pork Ribs, Albondigas, Pork Belly Strips, Pumpkin Ale Fritters, Chimichurri Mielies.

We chose the tasting board to get a taste of several items on the menu. From the beautiful sticky Chilli Wings to the perfectly charred mielies, everything on the board is bursting with colour and flavour! The pumpkin ale fritters are soft and tasty, and the ribs are glazed to perfection.

Tuna Ceviche Tacos
Avocado, Sesame Oil, Wasabi Mayo & Trout Caviar

A dish that combines art and food! It so full of colour that one cannot stop admiring it before tucking in! The freshest tuna sashimi, perfectly placed in a crunchy taco, topped off with bright orange trout caviar - absolutely delicious!

DESSERT:
Dark Chocolate Marquise
Salted Caramel, Mascarpone, Chocolate Pistachio Soil.

It looks like a huge chocolate bar, drizzled with caramel! A dessert that will make give fellow diners immediate food envy! The rich dark chocolate taste is amplified to perfection by the caramel drizzle. Divine!

Triple Choc & Toffee Cheesecake
Butterscotch, Chocolate Ganache

A beautiful creamy baked cheesecake that leaves you wanting more. The thick and creamy butterscotch sauce is absolutely to die for! Probably advisable to not share this one, to avoid any disputes over who gets the last spoonful!

VERDICT:

A really great neighbourhood spot, where you can enjoy some incredibly tasty food and wash it down with a delicious craft beer.
Foundry's success over the past 5 years is no accident, and their commitment to quality dishes is evident! If you haven't visited them yet, then round up some friends and make it happen!

#justenjoy #mattandleaabroad

My partner and I stopped by here for a quick late lunch mid-afternoon on a Friday after having heard that they serve very good pub food (grub). It still being early on a Friday, the restaurant was not too packed and so noise levels were subtle and the ambience was lovely and allowing for an intimate meal.

We opted to order the Pulled Pork Butt and Chorizo and Empire Chicken (curry on a pizza!) sourdough pizzas in wanting to be adventurous as we had never considered such toppings on pizza to begin with. Both tasted wonderful, providing a burst of lovely flavours for the palate and their +/-30cm pizzas had us feeling stuffed and satiated pretty quickly.

Our waiter was made himself available throughout to check on us. I would definitely recommend this place for their tasty pub food and ambience that pushed for good vibes and for anyone looking for a chilled meal anytime during the week.

As an aside, I had forgotten my purse at the restaurant and panicked after I had left thinking the worst and that I was unlikely to find it again. However, upon returning I found that the waiters had handed it in to the manager who had put it aside in a safe place for me. A very lovely place with good, honest service. Thank you, Foundry

Popped in for dinner with a friend last night, and was again reminded how much I love this venue. The hanging plants and big glass light fixtures light up the brick walls and wooden floors, and the kitchen opens up behind heavy metal "windows" that are lifted up to allow the hustle and bustle to escape.

The menu is concise and caters for all tastes, and is also displayed on chalk boards on the wall. We got there early, and luckily so - by 7pm they were very full. Despite this the service was good and very friendly.

They have a great variety of beers on tap - my dining partner enjoyed the pale ale and I ordered a glass of wine.

We opted to share some tapas - I recall the crispy squid heads being delicious and ordered those (they come with a heavenly harissa, lime and fennel seed mayo!!) and my dining partner chose the Albondigas - pork and veal meatballs in a white wine, red pepper and chilli sauce. This came with fresh, hot bread for dipping and this sauce was the bomb. Meatballs seemed to be slightly raw in the middle, but tasted great and it didn't hamper our enjoyment of the dish in any way.

We also ordered the chicken wings with a sweet plum and chilli sauce - these were perfectly done, the sauce was delicious and thick - much finger licking ensued and the meat fell off the bone!

We ordered another drink and caught up a bit, until our waiter started putting pressure on us just before 8pm saying the table was booked and we needed to go, which did out a bit of a damper on the end part of the evening, however bar that experience, I would certainly recommend Foundry - maybe just make sure you book a table on a Friday or Saturday night!

The food has improved immensely since my last visit a year ago. I had the Vodka Roasted Tomato Pizza - the tomatoes were so sweet and almost jammy and went great with the cheesiness of the pizza.
The ambiance is busy and energetic but not disturbingly noisy. Our waiter was very friendly and knew the menu well. He just forgot to look around him now and again when he walked up and down the restaurant. It was difficult to get his attention at times.
I'll definitely be back for more!

This restaurant has a wonderful decor, the service is great and their food is devine! A great place for tapas and a drink... craft beer to be more specific. The perfect end to one of those tough days at the office.

Always enjoy my time at The Foundry. Portions are great. Food is always cooked well. Service is great. I really have nothing bad to say about them. 👌

Such a wonderful evening! Wine choices and drinks all great and different. Nice and warm on a cold winters evening. Food had no fault and waiters and on point even though the restaurant and bar were full. Lovely experience and you won't be disappointed. The fillet and bone marrow is delicious- so is the focaccia.

We started off with the pumpkin frittas (which could be eaten as a dessert; it was sweet enough) and olives.@Justin Blanchard had the pork belly and I the three sausages - Amazing food and great staff!! Justin Blanchard

One of the few places with a kitchen open past 9pm. Very tasty starters and a huge selection of craft beers and wines. We had the BBQ ribs, chilli chicken wings and soy squids which were unfortunately a bit tasteless but the others were good.

Couldn't fault the service from our waitress Charity either - props for keeping the atmosphere warm even on such a cold night!

Same as previously stated Zomato give me a 6th star now!!!!!

These guys have it down to a T!
Beers = whatalotigot! Yea like smarties, they know their Ales from their Lagers from their American Pale Ales to their Saisons(Belgium farmhouse Ale, incase you reading an you didn't know. You just been educated, it's delcious) to pretty much anything you like, hell they have a walk in pick your own beer walk in fridge, Gary likes that too much! They even have their own beer "Franky four fingers" my dog is named after that! OK OK OK never mind the beer.

Gastronomical explosions of flavour in your face with the food this pozi delivers, dishes made with love and made with passion that makes you think the chef is single an wants to impress you!

Service shows you how well train waitrons can run a FOH whilst management tends to entertain an talk rubbish to smiling patrons,

Decor is top notch an makes me feel like I'm comfy and my bank card is happy to agree to what ever comes my way later that eve.
I recommend this place for young adults to old ballies but please just Uber yourself or our Government will give you a lift to your local polcia station and your better half will be unhappy.

Food - 3.5/5.0
Service - 3.8/5.0
Atmosphere - 3.5/5.0

Food was overall good but portion size is small especially for special of the day. Good trendy restaurant, worth going back to try other options on the menu. As the menu seems tempting.

What an amazing place!! I must tell you I have been to a lot of restaurants but The Foundry is absolutely amazing!!
The staff are super friendly and attentive!!! The food, now their menu is not the biggest but of all the food we ate nothing could be faulted and every bite was an explosion of well balanced flavors!!!
The selection of tipple is amazing, every beer you can think of along with a whole host of amazing cocktails!!!!
This restaurant is a must and I will be back again and again and again!!!
You have to go and visit The Foundry!! 🍺🌮🍔🥘

The first time I went to The Foundry two years ago, it was incredible. Their cocktails are amazing and their beers selection is wonderful. But almost every time after that, I've been disappointed. I always get the pumpkin fritters I hopes that they will be as good as the first time, but they never are. I always have to send them back to be recooked because the inside is raw. And even the second time, it's the same. The steak, egg and chips is really not great anymore and used to be a favourite. It's a pity.

Lunch at Foundry in Parktown North. What a disaster! Order Carpaccio and ribs as starters and also mains from the spit as well as mussel pot with Bourboun cream. An hour later we receive rotten carpaccio and call the manager to show him. Sorry and there he goes with the plate. New waiter offer us something else, but after the hour wait for round one, we decline and skip starters. The boys loved their ribs. Mains arrive and the half chicken is full of feathers and the mussel pot with herb and celery cream and chips, after ordering Bourboun cream and sourdough bread. Lamb on spit dry and flavourless. Still waiting for the manager to show him.Get offered cuppuchino for all the mistakes by the waiter. Left without the cuppa's and will not support this restaurant ever again.

Love this place! The food is delicious, drinks are always cold and perfect and atmosphere is amazing!
Will definitely be coming back again! Thanks for the great evening.

If you love your dirty finger food then definitely try the tasting board. It's so bad because it's so good. I particularly enjoy the pumpkin ale fritters and the wings. The platter goes down well with a beer or cider. I come here often enough to say that the best seat in the house is as you enter to the right. Feels like a little VIP corner.
Motlekabotle
It is a very chilled spot, the food is nice, the staff is friendly and mostly the ambience. It's not a noisy place so I'll definitely come back.

The service is good, the food is awesome, the part that I can highlight the most is the atmosphere. 👊will definitely come back. Thank you..
A very buzzing restaurant with a great vibe. Their 'cup of tea' of G&T is must try! The teapot of G&T feels almost bottomless, it's so big. The sirloin with the egg was delicious. The pizzas also looked tasty and not a bad option.

Amazing! First the ambience was so refreshing & at ease, the food was crafty & tasted spectacular but what blew my mind was the engineering of the drinks, amazing really & the service was just warm.

The only criticism I can give about this place is that it was quite noisy. My friends couldn't hear me tell them how good this dessert was. Dark Chocolate Marquise. Definitely worth a try.

The foundry is a great restaurant with a great vibe. Their food is fantastic packed full of flavout and the vibe is very nice at the restaurant. Its not too noisy and just a nice place to have a great dinner with some excellent cocktails.

A Friday night dinner here can turn into a very light night - the ambiance is great, the waiters friendly and the food is great. The lamb koftas? Yum yum yummy.

The only thing I don't quite fancy about The Foundry is that their smoking area is not completely closed off from the rest of the restaurant. So for smoke sensitive people (read: me) it can be a bit much.

Been here a few times so they deserve a review. Great spot in the Parkhurst/ Parktown North area for drinks and a bite to eat. The quality of food is consistent and I have yet to be disappointed. Their Sunday roasts are something else. We went the one day when a local TV show was doing a spot on them and the spot was out front by the entrance. Safe to say the smell of the roast charring off the grill was enough to get to you to order it before the specials were even called out. And did I mention if comes with these soft potatoes that have been roasted in the fat from the roast! Delicious! Choose a good wine from their decent selection, sit on the patio, and you're set.

The Foundry is an absolute favourite of mine. I'm yet to have a bad dining experience whilst at the place. The ambiance is always great and the food so much better. I recommend coming here!

Young, bar kinda vibe, not date night venue due to noise levels. Cool, funky interior with good lighting. Limited food menu but every dish ordered was delicious. Variety of alcoholic drink options so you'll never leave thirsty but sadly no dessert.
Krinisha Kara
Food was good, a bit on the bland side. Drinks are always a great idea here! Went in the week for lunch so it was fairly quiet. Service was average. I need a little bit more for a better rating.

Took my girlfriend here last night for valentines day and must compliment the The Foundry. Was my first time here and everyrhing was more than I expected from the service ,food and variety of beers.
Dale Ashley Heyns
Amazing and accommodating staff with a small but delicious menu 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 the cocktails were uniquely delicious, and the selection of craft beers was substantial! Absolute thumbs up, come visit ASAP.
Ilan Ben-David
Landed up here just by chance, but didn't regret it. The tuna tacos and pumpkin fritters were outstanding, but could only be outdone by the Springbok shank, which would put any meat lover right in their element. Food was quick and it is fairly well priced with great selection of drinks!
Len Gordon
Excellent setting, wide range of good beers and wine. Food always consistently v v good. From my young kids to Mom, we all have a great selection of options - most palates catered to.

Had a great time here on Friday afternoon for late lunch / early dinner. The menu just looked so good, I battled to decide on only one thing to order, so decided to get a few Tapas for the table to share.

Absolutely loved the Pork Ribs, which fell off the bone, and the Tuna Tacos, which we ordered more (and more) of :) Also tried the Lamb Koftas, Pork & Veal Meatballs and Soy Squid which were good and made for a great variety.

Service was great, atmosphere great (we sat outside) and all in all a great experience.
Tanya Lee Jorge
Although the venue is in a nice area and decorated beautifully there are several things they will ensure I don't go back in a hurry:-
- VERY overpriced for what you get- So loud in there that we had sore throats from screaming at one another
- On a Saturday up the staff compliment so every one can keep up with the demand!Overall an average experience!

- Oh and lets not forget the LIMITED menu!
Lesa-Jo
Came here with a group of friends and we were really impressed! The pizzas are delicious with awesome flavour combinations. The mushroom ravioli looked amazing as well. We will be back to try some other dishes soon.

I really do enjoy the Foundry. Whether it being for after work drinks or for a nice relaxing dinner. They have such a vast array of choices and tastes on the menu that you'll never cease to be surprised. I really do enjoy their mussle pot as well as their seafood pizza. The ambiance and decor is pretty good as well and the wall on the end can be pretty mesmerizing.

Excellent food and large portions (even the starters), drinks and aperitifs were fantastic with great bold flavours. The service was surprisingly great as the place was packed. This restaurant outshines every other establishment I have visited. My favourite restaurant by far, well deserving of 5 stars 👏🏼

Stopped in for a quick lunch on my second time here. Waitress was a little distracted and went missing, but I'll put that down to the holidays. Stars of the show were definitely the tuna ceviche tacos and beef carpaccio. Didn't have mains as the starters were decent portions, but will definitely be back to try some of the other exciting items on the menu. Very well priced and the best carpaccio my wife and I have had. Highly recommended.
Prasantha Bisetty
The chocolate fondant from here is my absolute favourite and we sometimes go just for that..... also love the alaskan crab pasta (when it is available) and roasted bone marrow. It can get very busy and noisy so I much prefer going during the day or early afternoon to avoid the masses.
Jill Nudelman
Lively, trendy place but a bit dark for my aging eyes when it came to reading the menu. Great food. The sesame seed tuna was fantastic. My salmon was good after I sent it back for a little more cooking. I wasn't mad about what it rested on - too oniony for my taste. Service was friendly. Corkage wasn't cheap at R150 but the wine was worth it: Newton Johnson pinot noir 2010.
I actually really like this restaurant. I've been here a good few time since it opened a couple of years back. It's nice for lunch too. Then try to get a table on the patio on the pavement.
Good selection of craft beers.

Came here with my cousins for dinner. What a lovely evening we had, the food is fantastic. I'm really glad we chose this place. A fantastic place to go eat and have drinks, nothing disappointed us, great food(worth every cent) and service. I'd recommend this place to anyone. The energy aswel is just great and I love a place with really clean toilets

Oh and singing happy birthday to my cousin sealed the deal 👌

I've been to The Foundry around 4 times and this was by far the most dissatisfied I've felt after leaving. Before their food has been very good but for some reason the food I had was sub par. The pumpkin fritters were ok. Not as yummy as they usually are. I had the steak egg and chips. The ordered the steak medium and the egg soft. The steak was well done and the egg hard. Maybe the kitchen had an off night.... Our waiter was also average. He said it was his first night so understandably nervous but really come on. I expected more.

I found the menu to be rather boring - strip out all the flowery language and it's a choice of meat, fish, pasta or pizza. Found my meal to be tasteless. Food is priced at the upper end which is not justified. The service was terrible - the restaurant was less than half full and we constantly had to search for our waiter who was nowhere to be seen.
Martin Headger
The Foundry, I find to be a good restaurant.
I always look forward to having a stake and having it done just the way I like it, and they do it well.

Their presentation is good but the portion size is not great compared to the price. You'd expect some more veg or something as the plates looked a little 'spacious'.

I'll definitely go again, but I feel that the sort of menu is done a little too-much. I look forward to seeing innovation, a taste experience and some creativity in the kitchen.
Ika Van Wyk
The food is exactly what you want from a place like this. Fresh, tasty and different from the fare offered by the other restaurants on the strip. The marrow bone starter and the seasonal moules pots (Thai green curry sauce) was spectacular. The chocolate marquise is dark, decadent and the perfect sized dessert. The cheesecake is great (too big, if that's something to "complain" about) but needs a bit of balance in flavour to cut through the sweetness.

Innocent is an amazing waiter and the manager, Charleston checked on us too with a big smile.

The wine by the glass is a generous portion, chosen from a great menu that has interesting left field choices as well as loved favourites.

Oh yes, Innocent collected roast marrow bones for us to take home through the night when he heard we had dogs. Super sweet!

You'll see us again.

Foundry is one of the top restaurants that Joburg has to offer. There is a beautiful stone carved wall and the decor is just on point. Not only is there a trendy vibe, there is something so inviting and warm about this restaurant. The service is great and most importantly there food not only looks exquisite but tastes absolutely incredible. They have great variety of dishes to chose from: from pizzas which are crisp and to seafood, steaks you name it- there is really something for everyone.

Started off with an aperol spritz...
Zanele - Brilliant waiter!!! Surely got her "up selling" tricks mastered!
Atmosphere vibey and classy!
Food absolutely amazing, springbok shank and cheesecake! 👌

#happycustomer
#goodvalueformoney

Went here for my team meeting and I tell you that this is simply the best.
There is almost nothing one can fault with this place apart from perhaps their price which at times can be a little high. The food is lovely, the vibe is even better and the service has almost no fault to to. This will easily be one of my top 10's or bucket-list places.
CBC amber weiss with a good steak. Heavenly.
Have a look at those photos, juts take some time and look at them and tell me this place is not worth it.

Love the Foundry! Great food, great drinks, fantastic ambiance. Really one of the best places to dine at in the Parkhurst/Parktown North area.

Came here yesterday comfort lunch. I hadn't been here since last year. Foundry is one of my favourite spots because of its position, interior, atmosphere and of course the food! My boyfriend and I ordered the hake and chips as well as the lamb cutlets. We both tasted each meal and I must say the lamb won. It was spectacular. Even the mint sauce. I was expecting the peas with the hake to be a purée and the fish to have more flavour but at least it was nice and light. Our service on this occasion wasn't the greater because our waiter didn't know how to explain the cocktails or the lunch specials but other than that we had a great time. I would definitely come back.

I've been to The Foundry a few times but for some reason I've never written a review. The Foundry always has a great vibe. The food is amazing and there's a great selection of wine and craft beer.

The Foundry...

I had taken the chance to push myself to try one of the most spoken about places in the peaceful but bubbling suburb that is Park town North.

Usually, I am not one for the hype and on most occasions find the most spoken about places rather average or simply not adventurous enough for my character. With that said, I came out rather satisfied.

From the moment I had walked in, the atmosphere had a sense of chill and calm, where you can have a loud entertaining session with friends while simultaneously enjoying a quiet, tranquil moment by yourself.

As I have probably made quite clear by now for anyone that has read my previous reviews, I can be quite the character and I usually make it a point to chat to the staff and generally inquire as to their state of being.

I do this because of the large amount of respect I have for people in the food industry.

To this point, the staff were very accommodating and very friendly, the waiter I had in particular even took the initiative to ask me how my day was and talk about his own, much to my enjoyment. I had actually requested to change seating and was assisted quite well by the waiter who even decided to keep an eye out for the table I had initially wanted and came to me as soon as it opened up, another plus.

Now to address the point of the sense of adventure. I decided to get advice from my very friendly waiter about their signatures and what would have me leaving with a lasting impression of the restaurant. I was directed towards this absolute gem:
The drink; They have a very creative and very odd item on their menu known as "Cup a Tea please".

This is by far among the top of my list as far as drinks go. For any fans of Gin, this is a beauty...
It is a unique twist in that they have decided to satisfy those with very peculiar palates such as myself.
It is a mixture of some very fine Gin with a Strawberry and Cream tea reduction. I am sure you are asking yourself, "Is this a Hot or cold alcoholic concoction?" - Well here is where it gets interesting...
The serving of this drink is what makes it truly memorable, It is presented as quite the fetching tea pot on a classic wooden board, served alongside a chilled frosted glass containing a large ball of ice. The ball of ice contains very well presented compacted slices of cucumber and the activity revolves around pouring hot tea as you please over this ice block of Gin, Tonic and Cucumber. A very well rounded sensation for the taste buds.

As I did not have the time to sit down for a proper dinner I will definitely be going back! Please pay The Foundry a Visit :)

The food is always good, service comes with a smile, the bathrooms are clean, and the atmosphere is great! P.S. The pork belly is my favourite

There food is just amazing! The ribs are so succulent that they just about fall off the bone. Tasty is such an under statement. Compliments to the chef. Staff was friendly, just didn't meet a manager!

I frequent The Foundry often with friends as an after work meet up for good drinks and yummy food. The 'bar snacks' / tapas are yummy - a welcomed experience after a long day. While I'm not a beer drinker, there is a vast selection from around the world.

The food is somewhat unique to many SA restaurant offerings, and while I am not an expert, a few dishes mirror what I found in restaurants in France - in particular, a few dishes using truffle cream and also Les Mouille Frites!

My favourites include the Pumpkin Ale Fritters and the Flat breads. In terms of mains, I'm a fan of the root veg and quinoa salad, Field Mushrooms Sour Dough Pizza and Mushroom Ravioli.

Avoid the Honeycomb Affrogato dessert - it simply turns into a diluted coffee mess thats difficult to eat, and really potent!

Make sure you book - it's a popular place and fills up really quick.

I cant get over the cocktails , tender meat and the great service we got from Mike , good management team , thanks a lot will be coming back here
