Review Houtbay Coffee - Hout Bay

Dave Anton
Brilliant find in Houtbay!! Coffee roasted on site and was delicious. You must have a sweet treat as well as the cakes are Exceptional. The orange almond flour cake was so full of favour and probably the best example we ever had.

Wow! The smell in here is simply gorgeous. Coffee lovers unite and discourse deep topics. Amazing looking cakes, croissants đŸ„ and pies đŸ„§ flat whites and coffee for sale

Brilliant little coffee gem - the best coffee I’ve had in the vicinity of Cape Town and the selection of sweet treats are amazing (especially the Carrot Cake). Their coffee beans to buy by the bag are also superb!

Definitely not what I expected when I googled the place. If you into the rustic vibe with the surroundings looking like a house with scraps in the yard then okay. The drinks were and biscuits were good. But nothing really to rave about. I think the look of the place just wasn’t for me and my family but otherwise a good coffee shop Maybe won’t be in a hurry to go again

We went for a little walk and came across this absolute Gem of a place. Absolutely amazing coffee and baked goodies and must try the Chilli Iced coffee

Amazing coffee! This place must be one of the best coffee houses in south africa. I loved the decor. I love the passion of the barista working there. No doubt a "must visit" when in houtbay

What a great way to spend your day, at this cute, rustic but homely cafe. The moment you step in, you feel the warm welcome. Coffee was great, the vegan treats were amazing! Must try their vegan banana bread! They had so many vegan goodies it was hard to just pick one! Their cookies, lemon one and the ginger one were great too. Can't wait to come back and try everything else! Thanks for making great coffee and amazing vegan treats!!!

A hidden gem. Amazing coffee and delicious treats. Meet the owner Paul Myburgh who always has an interesting story and great sense of humor! They also sell coffee beans đŸ«˜. They only open at 9am. This is a great place and worth a visit

Nice hidden jem. I hear the cheesecake is to die for. But, I got the quiche instead. Was amazing. Do not be scared of the birds that want some of the delicious awesomeness.

Tranquil. Simplistic yet very much an eloquent coffee story, beautiful, rustic and ran by the most sweetest lady. Inside the coffee shop, it feels like you are not in this era. The pastries are too good to even describe, the coffee is strong. Amazing place to get coffee.

Was my second visit to Hout Bay Coffee and after being served a pretty average cup of coffee (my flat white was lukewarm but tasted delicious), the experience was further tainted by two things: 1. Finding a hair in the slice of cheesecake my friend (who is a regular customer) and I were sharing, and 2. The poor way the waiter dealt with the situation. When we reported the situation, the waiter half-heartedly apologized and removed the hair, leaving the half-eaten slice of cheesecake. Obviously we weren’t going to finish the slice so we got up to pay only to find we had been charged for the slice of cheesecake ïżœ I know for a fact this isn’t standard protocol in the food industry as when similar instances have occurred at other establishments the item itself has been comped or even the entire meal depending on the severity of the issue. When we queried it, the waiter mumbled an apology again and then asked HOW MUCH OF THE CHEESECAKE we had eaten and when we said ‘half’ he offered us a 50% discount and said the staff were ‘particularly hairy people’ ïżœ The hair was definitely not one of ours as it was a short, grey hair, whereas we have long blonde hair and long brown hair. We ended up just paying for our two coffees and the slice of cheesecake in its entirety because the whole situation was just so bizarre. I’d strongly recommend retraining your staff so this kind of thing doesn’t happen again because the customer service we received today was completely inappropriate. It’s a pity because I came all the way from Sea Point expecting to have another really great cup of coffee and buy some coffee beans for home but opted not to after this really poor service

This little place most probably serves one of the best makes of coffee. Not only is the aroma very enticing but the taste (no watered down coffee passing as "strong"). Eats are all organic and the vibe honest and homely. What a treasure. xxxx

Among the best coffee experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world - great coffee, great cake, great vibe

The most laid back rustic spot in a beautiful setting in a lovely old fisherman's cottage with an always interesting selection of coffees on offer. All double shots, no singles here! Folks are always friendly and efficient. The place and people just ooze character and a very welcoming atmosphere.

So happy to have found this pearl among all the coffees in Hout Bay! Perfect coffee every time! Good eats and good vibes. What else do you need?!

This is the best coffee shop in South Africa, if you haven't been here you are really missing out.

Was in Cape Town for two months, and hands down best flat white in the city. And the rusks! Love this place!

I happened to be in Hout Bay and i stumbled upon this coffee shop. It almost has a rustic feel to it and i loved the way they recylced the coffee bags to make the cushions. It's a small intimate space inside and a perfect place to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Amazing place, really authentic and laid back atmosphere with great, friendly service. Their coffee is among the best in South Africa, I've been many times and it's always exceptional.
Bryan Vally
Very very good coffee set in a rad, “run-down” little building... if they’d had cheesecake I would have had that too... really cool chill spot. Worth skipping other coffee in the big centre and walking over the bridge for.

If you call yourself a true coffee lover lookout for this little coffee shop. Rustic, unpretentious kinda small village feel. Roasted on the premises, delicious home-baked treats. Be sure to carry cash ad there's no card facilities

Absolutely adore this place. Houtbay Coffee is a very special find. They use high quality ingredients, so expect to pay a little more. But it's so worth it. Their baked goods are INCREDIBLE. The cheesecake is one of the best. Definitely try their iced chilli chocolate if you're in the mood for something different - deep chocolate flavour with a slight kick.

The coffee shop that tells you off!

Great coffee, but that's where the fun ends. Twice I have been back and been told off by the grumpy owner who doesn't want children playing the stones on his beloved floor. When I confronted him he called me sweetie and was very derogatory. He doesn't need to tell my kids off in front of me. Kids are kids and they were not misbehaving. I think he secetely likes them to play with the stones so he can tell them off, I think that's how he gets his kicks. At the end of the day it's about respect. Oh dear, what a shame as the coffee was good!!

Magnificent little little coffee shop tucked in a quiet corner of Hout Bay. The quietness attracted us but the coffee sold us. Absolutely the best coffee I have ever had!
The interior is tiny with rustic seating and lots of minutia decorating every inch of space. It smells divine and has a warm cosy ambience. There is also outside seating. People sit quietly sipping coffee with a mesmerized look on their faces. Yes, it's because the coffee is outstanding!
Luckily, fresh roasted beans are sold in the different sizes starting from R85 for 250g. I chose the Burundi bean as it is dark, intense & smokey.
There are also lovely baked treats and goodies to whet the appetite even further. I will be back to try these.....

BigJoe

Amazing vibe, and it's the home of the wizard of Hout Bay (Paul) and don't forget about AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS coffee! There are many different types of beans and delicious treats to choose from. Coffee that warms the heart and soul. A friendly and peaceful atmosphere in the heart of Hout Bay. I couldn't think of anything better..
highly recommended. Hope to see you there!

A hidden, cosy little coffee shop. They roast their own coffee and make delicious pastries. The proprietors are friendly and enthusiastic about their dishes and coffees.

Dear Hout Bay Coffee,

Your coffee & atmosphere are like a warm hug from the airport arrivals in the middle of winter - a roads closed, schools off, blizzard storm, dreaming of summer type winter.

Sean

What a lovely surprise to stumble upon this sweet little coffee spot. It is beautifully quaint and tucked out of sight, alongside a little river that runs through the town. The owners are authentic coffee connoisseurs, and their love for their trade is apparent in every aspect of the shop.

Although I couldn't muster the courage to try one of their coffees in the summer heat, I did have a little sample of their baked goods (which all look and smell delightful). I opted for a small almond croissant. It was light and crispy, without being too rich in terms of sweetness or butteriness. They also have some interesting drinks on offer, such as an iced chilli-chocolate coffee.

I loved the simplicity and authenticity of Houtbay Coffee, and will definitely be returning to sample more of their goods.

Absolutely delicious coffee and baked goods. The owners really care about making a great cuppa. Some of the best I've ever had. Beautiful setting with a laidback vibe to get some work done or catch up with a friend in.

Best coffee in Hout Bay! We buy our monthly stock of coffee beans here. Romantic to sit outside next to the river. Their daily freshly baked cakes, muffins and tarts are to die for. Great to have such a great local spot.
Linda
My host mom refers to this place as her "hippie coffee spot". A place I had no idea existed until she brought me here on Sunday morning for a quick cuppa. Absolutely love it ! So cute and love the small little elements that makes this place unique. (Like my antique spoon with my coffee & the small shot glasses of water) We also tried their gluten-free breakfast quiche and it was delicious, pastry was a bit flakey but I suppose "gluten-free".... I would definitely recommend this little spot ! People were friendly, even a few dogs chilling around with their owners. A true hidden gem.

This was my first time to visit this coffee shop and since I'am cappuccino loving person I decided to have one .It was the best ever not forgetting their divine cakes and mouth watering home made pies .
Richard Marshall
Hands down the best coffee in Hout Bay. They roast their own beans on site in small batches. It's "artisanal" (I hate the word) coffee at its best.

Sometimes you find a gem and then sometimes you find a diamond. This is a little diamond. It is not fancy, its not chick, its not sleek. BUT it is what it is a that is amazing. It is located in a old trading store and has all the rusticness and charm of its setting.

Some of the best coffee in Cape Town and certainly in Hout Bay! The food is brilliant! The chicken pies are legendary and worth the drive to Hout Bay. The rest of the confectionery looks incredible although we didn't try any (I will certainly be back to correct this). The carrot cake looks especially interesting :-)

Great tiny cafe - warm, welcoming, very good coffee including single origins & house blends. Quaint, charming, delicious snoek pie! & homemade cakes/biscuits/rusks... all that's missing is music! Need some atmospheric notes & this place = a local winner.
Allan Moita
A true classic.
This little coffee roastery has everything you want from a small town vendor. Passionate about coffee with a variety of single origin beans as well as a wide variety of blends. It is guaranteed that you will find a taste the works for you.

The cakes and pies, together with the coffee, really make this a spot to be visited throughout the day.
