Review Surf Riders Food Shack - Durban

I’ve been at this establishment a few times and I always enjoy my visits. My most recent visit was for breakfast, and what a fabulous way to start my Friday and weekend it proved to be. The restaurant is on the Durban beach front’s promenade and the combination of sea breeze, friendly and relaxed environment and good food was soothing to my soul. The breakfast portion was generous, cooked to perfection and well presented. This was complemented by stunning service from our waitron, Precious, who was friendly and engaging without being intrusive. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a friendly, relaxed place to have a good meal and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beach front at the same time.

An incredible eating place. Most atmosphere, right on the beach, lots of people walking, riding and running. Great food with a wide variety & ice cream is divine. Cool, on the ball staff, knowledgeable & pleasant. The bicycle is right up at the entrance, so everything within reach. Lots of affordable holiday apartments just across the road.

The culinary experience at your establishment is truly exceptional! Your food captivates my taste buds with its extraordinary flavors, and each visit leaves me consistently delighted. It's as if every plate is a personalized masterpiece, meticulously crafted with a perfect blend of flavors and impeccable presentation. Dining here is a celebration of exquisite taste and unparalleled attention to detail.

Would recommend Surf riders for there food. But unfortunately the day we went they were really busy and the host waiter did not know what they were doing. They gave the 8 seater to two people instead of giving it to a family. Making us wait even longer for a table. Our waitress however was friendly. Food was exceptional.

I've been wanting to go here for the longest time , and finally got a chance , it was well worth the wait . The taste of Sam's cooking is etched in my mind FOREVER! you taste the freshness of the ingredients, and in all honesty, you hardly get that in most restaurants these days . We had surf and turf and wow !!! Steak and prawns , with the tastiest butter and garlic sauce , the prawns and steak were cooked to perfection !!!!! It was R295 but well worth it , follow Samantha (surf riders) on social media .... trust me, that's going to make crave her food!

One of my favourite breakfast spots. The food is delicious. The atmosphere is amazing, right by the promenade facing the beach. Seating arrangement inside can be improved for those rainy, windy and cold days. Bigger umbrellas for those scorching days. Apart from that, a lovely restaurant. Looking forward to the Ballito branch.

We had a Sunday morning breakfast. The service, from requesting a table to be served at the table was brilliant. The menu has an exceptional offering, so different from the usual offerings, it made it hard to choose! And we weren't disappointed with our fresh juice, iced coffee, fruit salad and yoghurt and toasted brioche.

Excellent food and presentation, very tasty too. Enjoyed a variety of dishes with family. All were good. Unathi also gave us good service. Thanks

Had a lovely experience here. Food was great and service was too. Only had to get waiters attention several times. Ordered calamari, which was fresh and light. Had a iced coffee to drink. Really enjoyed it I must say. The rest of the family had a pizza, fish taco and gourmet hot dog. The pizza was light and tasty. Fish taco was just one big taco but also delicious. Hot dog on the other hand was not “gourmet” necessarily. But was still enjoyed. The only problem we thought was that it’s a bit overpriced for type of cuisine. Was definitely a tasty meal but we felt like it was way over priced. Other than that I would recommend to give this place a try.

One of my favourite spots to share a meal with friends and my fur kids. For me it hits all the right spots.. amazing views.. beach vibes.. and absaloutly delicious food. I will always be back. Breakfast are amazing to the most delicious nachos.

Our favourite place to visit after walking the dogs on the beach. Everyone’s always so welcoming and the food is great. And the vegan milkshakes - amazing!!! They’re always happy to welcome our 3 big doggos (who love the ice-cream treat bowl). Highly recommend.

We walked in around lunch time and was greeted by friendly faces, as soon as we sat down, we were attended to by Lihle (she's a gem). We only had 30 minutes to spare, she rushed to get our order though. The food was amazing. We ordered a sushi octopus hotdog, and a bacon wrapped hotdog with mustard. 5 stars for presentation, our expectations were exceeded, but the star of the menu for us was the salted caramel and honeycomb milkshake, the honeycomb tasted, like it was made with love in your mom's kitchen I also got a tumeric latte which was perfect. The atmosphere is perfect you can sit inside or outside and get the sun and the sea breeze while watching people strolling along the promenade. If you are ever around South Beach please make sure to visit the place, you won't regret it. Thank you Lihle you were absolutely amazing today.

Perfect location on south beach near Ushaka. It's one of the better places to eat at. Very Interesting menu where there are vegetarian , vegan, fur baby options as well as burgers and pizzas. Divine milk shakes and coffee with a breath taking view of our beautiful promenade .

The restaurant was busy so I was impressed with the speedy arrival of drinks and food. The quality of the food is excellent but could be better seasoned. The service was sincere, kind and efficient. Being a pet friendly venue is great also. It would be nice if the restaurant had its own restroom.

After a long Durban beachfront boardwalk, there's no better place to grab a coffee and breakfast than Surfriders. I was hungry, so ordered a jalapeño burger, which did not disappoint! Oh, and the cappuccino was really good. Really really good. I highly recommend you get lost in their menu! You won't be disappointed.

My hubby and I decided to have a breakfast date after dropping our kids off at school so we stopped at Surf Riders Cafe. It's such a beautiful spot to chill at and enjoy a drink or meal with family, friends or your partner. The staff were so lovely, helpful and friendly and greeted us with a smile. Our food didn't take long to arrive and it was plated so beautifully and tasted delicious. The only down side on this day which wasn't their fault at all was load shedding so we were not able to have a coffee with our breakfast but there's always next time😊

One of the best places to experience that typical beachfront vibe. For a Joburg boy this is that place that gives you that relaxed feeling to simply sit, eat, drink and take in the surroundings! Fantastic service; quality food and all around great atmosphere!

Surf riders is the best place to be in Durban and located in the perfect spot ! It's pet friendly with great hospitality. The food is amazing with amazing drinks as well. It's an all in one perfect for a family day out.

Phenomenonal food-seafood pasta was absolutely delicious, fresh healthy refreshments available, friendly prompt service, well priced, fantastic view of our Durban beach front and clear ocean, wonderful location, fantastic to watch ships and fishing boats out in the ocean. �Such a great chilled out place for couples, and families too. Woofs allowed to if not mistaken.... I'd love to see watrons in super turquoise shirts with their logo...white marks quickly and blends in with many patrons.... Great group of watrons, on the ball and great comradary between them, that makes a huge difference in a restaurant.... Had a lovely Sunday lunch with my toddler. our waiter was brilliant and very friendly. the burger was mouth watering , my daughter really enjoyed the milkshake and the place is also pet friendly.

Surf Riders is like an oasis by the sandy beaches and it has a great place for business because of its location in between uShaka Marine World and the rest of Durban. It is because of this that we found it after leaving the marine world. We had brunch there and they have fantastic food. The burgers were amazing and so were the breakfasts. And don’t even get me started about the fries: they were thin and crispy with a cheese sauce I’ll never forget. It was the best cheese sauce I’ve ever tasted at a restaurant. Amazing place and I recommend its fries and burgers.

Great place to eat burgers and shakes, just around the corner from Ushaka. Friendly and snappy service. The Cheeseburger I had was fresh and the fries just right. I can highly recommended.

One of my favorite beach side restaurants in Durban. Offers chilled vibes, they play pretty cool music and the staff is Very friendly - great service overall. Love their food & the presentation. The cocktails are cute & taste as good as they look!

This place is my new burger haven, good service and the food is amazing. The portion of fries served with the meals are adequate but who can complain, they’re well cut and seasoned to perfection.

A friend and I went to Surf Riders for lunch today. I had fried fish in a taco and she had the ribs and calamari combo. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the portions. The fish looked like over sized fish fingers, tasted really good. The greens in the taco were amazing. My friend's ribs were soft but nothing special, tasted smoked. The calamari was ok.. We will going back soon.

The Surf Raiders Food Shack has a great location right on the beach promenade... on a sunny day the cocktails and selection of tasty food will be ample to keep you happy while you sit and people watch. Seafood prawn and linguine was full of flavour and very generous on the number of prawns and clams ... worth trying ... the marinara pizza ... crisp crust and wonderful portion of seafood on top , the base sauce was a little bland under seasoned but easily fixed with some of the fresh chilli oil they bring to the table. <br/><br/>Have a treapot for two ... then have another <br/><br/>Only disappointment was hearing they were out of Fish... seriously ... the ocean and the docks are visible from the entrance 😭 <br/><br/>So no fish tacos... but will return to find out what they are like ...

Great stop along the promenade with a vibey atmosphere and very good coffee. Service was friendly, and they welcome dogs too. I ordered the mackerel eggs Benedict - whilst the different components alone were great, I thought that the mackerel overpowered the dish a tad too much. My family enjoyed their hot dog and normal eggs Benedict. There are unfortunately not many reasonable options on their menu. Milkshakes are massive, and I will recommend their cheesy chips with chili which are to die for.

Surf Riders produces consistently good food and they always have something interesting on their menu. Their breakfasts are great and cleverly done. Try and avoid getting into a tangle with their grappa. Brendan is a great chef and Sam efficiently runs the shop.

If you’re looking for a laid back, quality time out on the beach with family or friends this is definitely the spot. I had the Feta, Avo & Bacon pizza best I’ve had, with a watermelon daiquiri to drink. Service is efficient though it gets really busy. Definitely coming back.

We ordered quite a big takeaway order as we were on yhe beach. Our waitress was very friendly and polite but clearly very inexperienced. She made a few minor mistakes and forgot to place one of the orders requested. When i started eating my burger i realised there was no burger patty which was disappointing but because we had walked bavk to the beach and we were quite a walk away i didnt return to address this with the manager. I realise that isnt the waitresses fault at all. However it was still a bit disappointing that that nobody was checking something like this in the kitchen. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. So not a 1.

Wow what a place. Really cool setting simple but chilled and the service is brilliant way better then Jo cools the staff are friendly and on the ball with food and drinks, no long waiting, we got our drinks and food and a very reasonable time and it was absolutely delicious! Had the chicken burger and cheese fries. My girlfriend had a massive milkshake which was also out of this world and it was on our table in a jiffy. Please guys you gotta try this place out!

Went for lunch today. Can’t believe we hadn’t been before. So chilled on a perfect Durban day. Jack black. And cider on tap both ice cold. We ordered the mussels and prawn dish. Omg our of this world. Looking forward to a return perhaps for sundowners!

This place is an absolute must try!!! I ordered a cheese and bacon burger and a salted caramel milkshake and both were out of this world, AMAZING. The rest of the table ordered all sorts of different meals and everything looked and apparently tasted great. Make sure you get the sweet potato fries, you will not be able to stop.

Had been here just after a dive on Monday 20th Nov and had a eggs Benedict with hot chocolate. I did also try the sweet potato fries and they were really yum. <br/>Love the location but the veg options could be made better and the non veg options could be made available as when I did order the items on the menu weren't available and it was a bit ticking off.

Excellent for a chilled weekday getaway. Simple menu which is a tell tale sign of excellence. Know what you do and do it well and boy did they! I had a slush, cheese burger and side of fries. The quality of the beef was evident in its buttery texture, fries were perfectly crisp and fluffy inside! Definitely going back for the piped donuts! Friendly and helpful service. Relaxing view of the ocean.

These burgers are humongous. Service from the waiter was excellent. I was really happy that they swapped out the veg I don't eat. What I disliked was the lack of sauce

Perfect lunch place!!! I had the prawns and mussels and was divine and to die for!!! So saucy and so much sauce was poured over. Mussels were extremely fresh and so tender. Excellent seafood. Great service from our waiter stretch, huge variety of gin for all those gin lovers! Our waiter gave us rosemary and lemon and cucumber to add to our drinks! Was so tasty! The cheese fries are absolute heaven and very rich. Should be shared by the table. The burger however had a lot of salad in it but was still good.. we had the bacon and cheese burger. My prawns and mussels were served with ciabatta that was toasted and slightly burnt which spoiled the taste.

Wonderful experience. View of the beach. Courteous and attentive staff. The menu is well thought through and appropriate for the setting and location. Food was well made and well presented although all i had was bunless chicken burger. Chicken was moist and flavourful. Presented with the lettuce tomato and feta wrapped with slivers of cucumber

A vibey spot on the Durban beach front serving a selection of quick bites. Portions are somewhat small. The burgers are okay. Cheese fries are good. The muscles and prawns were tops!

What's better than an eatery that is literally on the beach? Okay this has a bit of a promenade before you get to the sand which makes for great people watching. <br/><br/>This place is relatively well known for their baked whole fish. This takes 45min to make but is apparently worth it. I didn't go for that but please give it a go if you're there. <br/><br/>I went for the mussels and prawns accompanied by beer. <br/><br/>Brilliant choice. <br/><br/>The sauce was creamy and super rich. The mussels were excellently done and the portion was good enough for me to be full at the end. Though that might be attributed to the craft beers they have. The prawns could be slightly better but we will give them the benefit of the doubt. <br/><br/>The vibe was cool with great music and the people around having a super chilled feel to them. <br/><br/>Excellent spot. A must go to in Durban.

I had breakfast at this restaurant overlooking North beach this past weekend . I went for the salmon and avo eggs benefict and it was delicious. They have interesting variations of this breakfast favorite such as tuna and kingklip benedict. Stunning location ,good food, friendly service but average coffee.

THICK! SWEET! FUNKY! DELICIOUS! <br/>Just a few words to describe the two milkshakes, my sister and I had this past weekend. <br/>Her one being an Oreo Biscuit, Real Chocolate Ganache and Marshmallow (definitely one for the chocolate lovers!)<br/>I experimented with the Reduced Salted Caramel and Honeycomb, and it was nothing less than amazing!<br/>Besides the amazing milkshakes, the vibe at this restaurant is an extremely relaxed one, despite being such a popular busy spot. It boasts incredible views of the ocean and most importantly, THEY ARE DOGGY FRIENDLY!!!! Definitely something that caught my attention and will make me bring my two dogs for a little excursion and snack.

Dont even know how I missed this amazing place over the past 2 years. Great setting with amazing views of the sea and beach. Excellent service from the stuff and the well prepared, delicious food made my experience an enjoyable one. Will definitely make this one of my regular spots.

We rocked up at 830am on a Saturday and need a table of 18 for my mum's birthday. The team jumped into action and sorted us a massive table and seated us super quick.<br/>The food was great. Simple breakfast and really good coffee. But what made the morning so great was the unbelievable service by Prince & Phila. They really made the breakfast flawless and effortless. Super friendly and 100% on the ball. <br/><br/>I highly recommend coming here just for a coffee and the superb service that we had. It really made the meal. I can't praise the team here enough.<br/><br/>I'm giving an extra star on this review just for Prince and Phila.<br/>7⭐️

The Surf Riders Food Shack!!!<br/><br/>Its a lovely place to be at, constantly busy, situated on the Durban Beachfront overlooking the ocean. <br/><br/>The food is amazing!!!!<br/>So I had ordered a chicken salad and the presentation was on point.😀 it was a good juicy piece of chicken with the salad on the side. <br/>My dad had ordered hot chips with a creamy cheese sauce on top of the chips, to indulge yourself to have more. Its a must have!!!<br/><br/>My dad had also ordered a chicken burger which was healthy and divine.<br/><br/>We also had bought these diet, healthy donuts with a dark chocolate sauce, which was a good different taste.<br/><br/>I suggest if you watching your weight, you should come here, its a good place to have a relaxed meal. <br/>

Surf Riders is opposite the beach so the vibe is really relaxing and the view is beautiful. <br/><br/>The best thing about this restaurant are their cheese fries, they're the best fries I have ever tasted. They're seasoned with these spices and the cheese sauce is delicious. I wouldn't hesitated to double up those fries and just order that next time. The bacon and cheese burger was okay, a typical burger but nothing special. <br/><br/>I ordered the mango slush which had a bit of an after taste so I did not end up finishing it. <br/><br/>The service was good and the waiter made sure I had bacon on my burger- which in my opinion is what makes a great human being in general.

Love this place. Chilled restaurant at uShaka beach with a variety of breakfast and lunch options. Best part, you can take your dogs with and they have their own menu too. Everything from the breakfasts to the lunches and the milkshakes are delectable. Gotta try the sweet potato fries and if you're vegetarian, have the mushroom burger, it will not disappoint. Downside-It's a long wait for your food.

Great food! On the beachfront, the beer is cold, good music and lively people. Would definitely recommend to go and have a nice breakfast here. A real feeling of Durbz.

Who doesn't love all day brekkies? This buzzing food shack offers fresh, scrumptious food that's beautifully presented. The waiters are very bubbly and helpful. It's cool that they're big on having biodegradable serving containers. Awesome chill spot for you, your mates and doggies!<br/>One suggestion is please stock up on wet wipes! The waitress told me that they only have serviettes. I hate sticky hands!!

Oh my god!!!! What can I say, if I could go back every day I would. But I'm a few 100 km away usually😣. I had one of the best meals I have had. It helps that your sitting on the beach, surrounded by the beauty of durban and the music creates such an awesome atmosphere. You have to try the prawns and mussel dish..... so zesty snd just incredible. Can't wait to go back!!!!

Best coffee I've ever tasted and eggs bennedict to match. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Wish we'd discovered this hidden gem sooner.... only reason we're not rating this a 5, is because Robs poached eggs were as big as his thumbs with holindasae sauce to match which he was a lil grumpy about... other than that is perfect!!

Ohhhh my word!!!! :-)<br/>The food here was out of this world...<br/>Starter: Garlic shrimps with toasted bread<br/>Mains: fish tacos and wood fire fish<br/>I think the chips are sprinkled with sugar(actualy forgot to ask) and it makes them taste different which made me go crazy because they were delish.<br/>Everything was delicious, the service was great, the lady was smiling all the time, unfortunately we didn't get her name. <br/>I also loved the cocktails, the teapot one is served in an actual teapot which I find sooo out of this world!!<br/>Pity we arrived there in the late afternoon and they were closing, we could have stayed longer for more drinks.<br/>Definately seeing you soon!!!

Post run breakfast with a twist. Really enjoyed their naked burger (bun less) with the best presentation of side salad I've seen - well worth the wait !

Love the chilled 'beach side holiday' atmosphere. 'Breakfast works' was a bit short on cheese and eggs benedict was as small as a kids portion. Coffee on the other hand was flavourful, they serve Blacksmith. What they call piped donuts is Churros, nice and crispy on the outside but unfortunately undercooked on the inside. A plus is that its a pet friendly place with menu items for dogs.

Had a great brunch this morning. Only ruined by the windy weather causing flying umbrellas. The works breakfast bun was very tasty - my friends throughly enjoyed their eggs benedicts. Dessert was a churro type donut with a chili choc dip and the eaton mess. Plus they serve mimosas! Perfect

If only the food taste the way it looks... Service was very slow, the food was tasteless and the chicken was not cleaned properly (you could visibly see the hair/feathers still on the chicken). We had a burger and their tequila chicken wings, also an oreo milkshake. Milkshake looked great though...

OMG the sweet potato chips here were unexpectedly the best I've ever had. They just had this delicate balance of softness on the inside and crunch. The cheese chip dip sauce is to die for. The staff is very friendly and efficient. They know a lot about the menu too so they're great help if you don't know what to have. It's such a great place to frequent in the summer.  My only nitpick is the 'gourmet milkshakes'. I don't know if it's cream or the ice cream, but whatever the creamy component is that's used to make them lacks richness. It tasted more like a sort-of creamy sorbet then it did a milkshake. If it's going to be called a gourmet milkshake and if I'm going to pay that much for it, I'd at least like it to be a soul snatching delicacy and not like a two minute quickie that you were a part of but may as well have not happened because you got absolutely nothing from it. You know? Nobody likes that.

The perfect lunch spot on a summers day. Pizza's are delicious with a great view of the sea. Their gourmet milkshakes look amazing but are a little overpriced. I was also disappointed that only half the glass had milkshake and the other half filled with vanilla ice cream losing it's unique flavour.

Surf Riders is such a unique restaurant situated on North Beach. They are well known for their gourmet milkshakes and organic foods. My friend and I visited the Restuarant over the summer holidays and we really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere, while watching the ocean. The service was a bit slow but non the less the food was still good. I enjoyed a Cosmopolitan cocktail and their chicken tikka pizza that was topped with rocket, avocado and balsamic vinegar. I love thE touch of organic ingredients to their meals. Definitely a spot I will visit again.

Brilliant spot and great food catering for passers by ... such an eclectic mix of patrons - one rainy afternoon I sat next to a group of beautifully dressed young girls out to impress on one side and on the other a group of wet barefoot surfers!! We mostly had hot dogs and cheesy chips and I rate these the best in Durban maybe ever anywhere 😄 my friends (and I am not exaggerating !!) went back every day for the entire week, sometimes having more than one serving while their kids scooted around on bikes or go-karts which they hired from upstairs. The staff are friendly & helpful .. But when they get busy, which is a lot, there is a hiccup somewhere as the service gets confused and I did not get my order until everyone had just about finished but the really great food & fantastic view makes this seem not such a big deal ! If you are in Durban, go there - you will go back again and again !!!

I love the concept and location of Surf Riders. They have a prime spot in a really beautiful section of our beachfront and have also aided in creating a vibrant atmosphere.<br/><br/>I have visited here quite a few times. Each time I visit I experience poor service. I keep going back because I so desperately want for them to be as amazing as they can be. They have a lovely menu and beautiful set up. It also attracts quite the crowd on weekends.<br/><br/>I've never had great attentive service though. I visited on a weekend, a weekday, midweek, in the morning and even afternoon trying to gather when the best time to go is and each time the service has been poor, with long waits for food or drinks.<br/><br/>That being said their piped doughnuts are top notch. Especially the spanglish variant which has a perfectly balanced chili chocolate dipping sauce. Milkshakes are also good and attractively presented.<br/><br/>My salmon benedict was a little heavy handed with the zing in the sauce but a rather generous portion. Pizza was not good. Cheesy fries are pretty damn good. I'll probably keep visiting

Visited the restaurant during the week just after the holiday rush and was well impressed. The food with great and complimented by the wonderful beachfront views! The service was on par too!

Wow! What an awesome unassuming and yet surprising spot. Right on the North Beach promendade. Burgers are out of this world and the milkshakes are a definite must! One of their nice touches is a spiked slushie. Service was friendly and efficient. Wonderful.

Pleasantly surprised as we went in peak season, was filled to the brim, yet service was fast friendly and efficient - food was mouthwatering and my habanero burger was big, fresh, juicy and SO yum. A great pizza burger breakfast/lunch seaside cafe!

The ratings totally for the view and the prawns with bread, there were 5 prawns in a curry and they have amazing. Pizza are average and a lot for 1 person to finish, lovely weather when we visited!

One of the most chilled out and amazing places I've been to. Best atmosphere and the most incredible food. I'm still dreaming of that hotdog & fish tacos....and the best Rocky Road dessert I've ever tasted. Definitely heading back here.

Surf Riders was such a great experience for us! The food is excellent and their milkshakes are heavenly. The service is attentive, and though it can get a bit loud, it's such a great vibe right on the beachfront.

I've eaten here twice to far and it's been amazing on both occasions. The food is incredible. Tasty with good portions. Their plates are extremely unique and I love it. However on my second visit it was windy and those cardboard plates had a lot of trouble. So that should be looked into. The atmosphere is awesome. And the people, both customers and staff, are very welcoming and pleasant. The shroom burger is awesome! And the cheese fries are a must try!

The food is absolutely amazing! The chicken deluxe burger is mouth watering and the pizza is tasty and crispy! A great atmosphere! Staff a bit delayed but nevertheless AMAZING FOOD!

Great view, great coffee and good food. Situated on south beach, it's a great spot to unwind and people watch. It's unfortunate that the experience was let down by sloppy service, for a large table of 12+ people at least two waiters should have been made available. That aside go check it out at least for a drink and the sea view.

The food is incredible here, I had the prawn and mussels, which were amazing! On my next trip I would like to go back and try the 1kg wood fired fish. Great place to sit and relax with great scenery.

Burgers are sensational! Go here for great food with a great view, you won't be disappointed. Right on the beach front, close to uShaka and part of the Durban promenade, I will definitely go again. The Chicken Deluxe was unbelievable if u like a bit of spicy flavor!!
