Review Ferrymans Irish Tavern - Cape Town Central

Rick Rohan
One of the few places which has Guinness on tap. Their Nachos are excellent. I often spend a lazy afternoon here with Guinness and Nachos. They have live performances starting at noon. It gets very busy during this time and service takes a hit. If you want outside seating during weekends best be at the place by 12 to avoid waiting. The Guinness on Tap is quite costly (R59) - but I would say worth it.

What a lovely experience 😀 this place was packed over the weekend 😀. They have a live band area where artists can sing while you enjoy something to drink and to eat. The vibe is amazing.
Simona Marinkova
Nice pun with live music and in a safe area. The service is friendly and attentive too.
Santi Talo
Only drinks took but they have very good variety and service with lovely place of waterfront

I had the shephards pie and it was my 1st time eating here. The wait was for a while but I understood the meals were freshly prepared. It was piping hot and so hearty. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed with a jazz singer in the corner and the business of the waterfront going on. Loved it.

Ferryman's in the V&A Waterfront is one of those places that is always good and has really passed the test of time. If you are looking for a fun day out with some tasty beers, live music and enjoy some good food, then this is the place for you. They are very popular so I recommend you make a booking especially for larger groups. This is also a good option for warm or cold days as they have both indoor and outdoor seating areas, and the staff are friendly and helpful. As I mentioned, they frequently have live music over weekends which I love, but unfortunately when we visited the band's volume was so loud that we couldn't even hear each other and we ended up moving to a quieter spot inside the restaurant. I recommend the management look into this as the live music is nice but it was just way too loud. Apart from this, the rest of the experience was as good as usual and I am already planning my next trip back.
Mark Rees
A great bar with large outside seating area. Service is good and they have a nice IPA, Margaritas (5/10). Had a sharing platter which was nice but the chips not entirely cooked.
Rory Fitzhenry
Great pub for an evening of live music, sport and wide selection of drinks. Don't bother with the food though, lots of restaurants around for that. Service was very attentive and friendly too.
Pragasen Pillay
I ordered a chicken burger wish tastes really good but the chips wasn't done. I will say the onion rings is a good touch..
Hendrik Pelser
Great place to bring your wife if the relationship is dying and you have nothing to say to each other but need to show that you're still trying. The live music is super loud, so no possibility to talk to each other anyway
Brandon Lorenzo
Great live music. Awesome atmosphere and vibe. It's really a fun Irish tavern/pub. Lots of drinks and shooters to choose from. Big drinks menu. Gets very loud on busy nights. They also have many TV screens for sports games. Food is good/average. Service is good. The live music definitely keeps you there longer.
Antoinette Schoeman
Grilled Haks & Chips was excellent, great area to sit and people watch.
Jazdean Bennetta
Delicious and affordable food, cocktails and beers. Live music was definitely a vibe. Service in the other hand was very disappointing, waitress didn't have much care and seldom came to the table.
Gareth Hall
Always love coming to Ferrymans! Live sports, live music, cold selection of beers on tap and good service. It has a wide variety of pub grub on offer as well as options for vegetarians and vegans. Playgrounds are available for the kiddies. I recommend it for a festive day out.

The vibe is amazing. The food is lovely and the service is great. It's a great spot to visit.
Emma
Our waitress was very friendly but the food was extremely average pub food. The chips were all cold and it seemed that the food had been standing for a while before being brought to us. The manager was very nice when we complained and did give us a discount on the bill but it should not have happened in the first place. I've always found Ferrymans to be a great vibe when I've been there watching the rugby, but I was disappointed this time. Will probably just stick to drinks there next time.
Gmuller485
Worst service in the world! Embarrassing. What a shame. I feel for the customers looking to enjoy a pub lunch in one of Cape Towns most prime location - you will be disappointed.
Wanderlust Coffee
We heard the singing and thought that the vibe looked good. We waited long with no waiter (I literally saw two waiters on the floor) until I asked the manager for menus. She was friendly and told me me she'll send someone over right away. We waited a while before a grumpy girl came and stood there looking at us not saying anything. So we felt rushed to give an order and just ordered some wine.
A few minutes later I saw her again and asked for and ashtray and she told me very agitated that I should wait. I saw her walk passed us a few times with ashtrays in her hands and continued walking.
We ended up leaving before we even got drinks as we waited forever, still without an ashtray, never mind drinks.

After eating at another place we walked back to the car and we passed Ferryman's again and I SAW A RAT running between the people sitting. This is the most horrific thing. So not only is the service terrible, they have rats as pets too.
I'll definitely not go back and I don't recommend this place.

Yrina Pustella

Very lively on Saturday night. We went for a few beers and food with friends but the prices of the beers aren't on the menu. But I suppose if you're going for a beer you don't really mind paying a lot. Great experience, live music was entertaining
Morgan Gaffney
What an awesome vibe!!! The food was typical pub food but portion size is good and very tasty. The live band was awesome. Very reasonably priced and the staff are very friendly. Was a great night. Will definitely go back.
Brendp51
With some of the best live entertainment, Ferryman's is a great place at the V&A and more afforable. It surely has it's inconsistencies regarding meals but on a good day, You'll have some of the best seafood around. PS. The hake & calamari combo is always a winner
Xolani Sxosh Cele
Visited Ferrymans just before leaving for JHB and was served by Vusi..now that young man knows Customer service...next time I'm in Cape Town we definitely coming because of the service we recieved...
Ohmyfoodie
Been there a few times only for drinks. Went there the other day to watch the rugby. There was an odd smell in the bar area, the waiter got our drink orders wrong and the food was expensive, but dead average. Maybe they just had a bad day I dont know. Still a nice spot to go for a drink.

Ferryman's is one of those versatile places with many faces. Inside it feels like a harbour pub in 18th century England. On the outside it's more like a summer cafe.
We really enjoyed the warm evening with live music and refreshing draft beer, watching the hustle and bustle of the waterfront.
The burgers are satisfying in size and flavour.
Will definitely enjoy more of what's on offer in the future.
Mikaela
Really rude staff, we didn't even make it past the door because the staff were so rude. My friends and I went to Willoughby's instead. 10/10 don't recommend.
Talia Lee Cohen
Came for birthday drinks. Surprised with the cocktails, which were sweet but better than I expected. The music was fun... Sometimes they have African singers or karaoke type singers 🎶 expect slow service and your grubby pub food and you've got a win 😉
Paria
Great cocktails especially the mojitos! Really bad service though, I asked for a menu twice and had to wait 15 minutes before I got it, and it wasn't even brought by the waitstaff, I had to get it myself.
Wasn't impressed !
Sean Boertjie Pelser
Like always great vibe. We popped by to have a beer and quick meal. Manager was present with good serivce in general. Food was not wow but not bad as we shared the platter for 2.
Tiara Jorissen
Love this place so much! Great to have a few drinks and have a bite to eat while listening to the live band after 8pm. Great vibe and very friendly service! For drinks my dad ordered the mickey mouse beer which is a combination of i think all the beers combined which he enjoyed very much and even ordered another! For food i shared the platter for 2 which consisted of spring rolls, hake, calamari, wedges, chicken and beef strips and is definitely enough for 2 people, just dont expect 5 star dining as its typical pub type food. The others had a beef burger and chips which was also good. We Will definitely be back!!
Ashish Sewgoolam
Simple, good old fashioned pub menu and no frills at a not so simple location in the V&A Waterfront. Prices are at a slight premium for what you get but all you have to do is have a look at your surroundings to justify it and they are not shy with the portions.
Hake and calamari combo was great and the freshness of the fish was almost incomparable - I can believe their claim on the menu that "nobody sites it better". Should have opted for the calamari grilled though as it was a big too much with the deep fried batter. Chicken schnitzel with mash and sauce of your choice is a good too.
Andre Breytenbach
Just a lekker kuier jol. This is not one of your posh lanie restaurants in the V&A but rather a pub and grub style restaurant that's always packed and always consistent with good food and good value. Plenty of daily specials on offer and most beers on tap!
Candice
While visiting this establishment on a quiet Tuesday evening , I have to say , our food took quite a while .. nonetheless ,spicy butternut soup was Divine, chicken schnitzel was underwhelming.. crumbs were all over my plate. The classic burger was average and the cosmo my sister had was waaaaay overpriced for the small quantity compared to other places .. I have to say though my family and I visited on Sunday past , we sat outside while the fancy galada band was playing .. was a great vibe on a lovely day . 2minded about coming in for a meal again though but a nice spot to chill on a warm Sunday afternoon .
NtsanganiSinovuyo
Great place for sundowners, very vibrant but the services is terrible due to its fullness during weekends great for group of friends who wAnt to have fun and also like their live performances some days never had a problem with their food.
Nel
This place is a jam on the weekend. Live singing and bands each singing covers of crowd favorites. The drinks are decently priced and the decor is of atypical bar with wooden benches and along the side there are some comfortable couches for those who don't like to scoot over. The wait staff is nice so there isn't a need to like get up and go to the bar every time you want a drink.

I was excited to finally go to Ferryman’s. Sadly, it didn’t live up to my expectations.

It looks like a nice, old school pub, and I enjoyed the setting and atmosphere.

However, we wanted to drink a lot of beer (we were quite a big group too), but when we wanted to order, the waiter unceremoniously told us that there are issues with the beer on tap and the only one available is Castle Lager.

Without much of a choice, we all ordered the Castle and then, later on, we asked the waiter if the other taps are working and then he simply said ‘yes’. He knew that we wanted to drink something other than Castle, yet made no effort to inform us that we would be able to order other beers. It made me even more unimpressed with the place.

I ordered the basket with chips and chicken strips and that was nice and tasty.

I’m guessing we just had bad luck, but because of the lacklustre service and the beer problems, I don’t see myself coming back soon. We had a fun night out, but I think it could have been better.

I came here to watch the Euro Final and I was impressed with the vibe. There was no place to seat if you wanted to watch the game. Fortunately I asked some friendly folks to join their table and they were cool with that. Upstairs the game had sound and downstairs they were playing live music. So even if you wanted to enjoy the music while watching the game, you could do it.

I had the chicken burguer which was not that good. It lacked flavour and it was a bit dry. My girlfriend had the prego roll which was completely opposite. She loved it.

I would come back to this place to have a couple of beers and listen to some good music or watch soccer. Not for the food.
Lindie White
If you're looking for a pub with good grub, large drafts, live band (not necessarily accomplished, but they certainly always get the audience going), here's the answer. We usually sit upstairs where you can still enjoy the vibe but at least be able to hear each other talk. On a summer's day, nothing beats the pleasant international crowd on the benches though.
Ryno Van Eeden
Definitely one of the best seafood platters I ever had! Nice vibe and great live entertainment! 🤘one of my favorite spots at the V&A Waterfront
Glen Hunt
Great place to chill with mates, have a drink or 4. Love the vibe of this place. Been a couple of times. One they had live music and everyone got into the music. The other was to see an old friend and we just sat and knocked back of their beer rockets.

When it's busy in summer it's a little hard to get a table but once you do you can sit and chill. Food is typical pub food and nothing to write home to the kids about. The beer is cold and the sangria is wonderful.
Brian
One of the oldest establishments in the Waterfront, revamped area outside which seems pleasant and works, like the fact that they have kept the heritage inside, yes might be dark and dingy but it's part of the history, toilets have been redone as well, but seriously guys there is no excuse for not deep cleaning your venue, there is a permanent odor and near everything is filthy, in fact the manager with his pants hanging halfway down his ass needs a clean, sorry it's not personal but I was there last Friday and the service was pathetic in every possible manner, toilets were disgusting, puke in the passages leading to both men's and ladies, waiter service was non existent, the "manager" needs to focus on managing and not worry about been in a rush to close the doors so he can get out of there. I won't be in a rush to return, I don't feel the attitude displayed is the way forward for Ferryman's, they may have taken over from where Quay4 has failed, but don't get to comfortable if this is the standard you are going to present to guests.
Magda Oosthuysen
Stopped at this very popular tavern for after dinner drinks and some music. The atmosphere at this venue is always brilliant and makes you want to stop for a drinks or some food. Service was really good and fast in spite of the place being packed. Music was fantastic and it makes you want to stay and listen. Brilliant venue with a great vibe - will come back for a proper dinner.
Kerryn Rehse
Stopped in at Ferryman's for what we had hoped would be a quick lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The outside "beer garden" was busy but not "December busy". The service was slow - over 10 minute wait for a beer and about 40 minute wait for food (we think that this was caused by back of house though).
We had burgers, the Ranting Banting and The Cheese. The burgers were great, cooked to medium as ordered and very tasty. The banting burger was served with marinated beetroot, melted cheese, an egg and side salad, while the cheese was a double burger stuffed and topped with cheese.
Despite the slow service, we could not fault the food. So if you are not in a rush and are up for some live music and great food, head to Ferryman's when you are next at the Waterfront.
Roastin
If you enjoy a crunchy snack called cockroach then this is the place to go. The staff recommends eating this dish with wasabi or tobasco. I would definitely never dine at this establishment again. Gross and disappointing.
Bee
Best fish & chips (& calamari) for value at Cape Town's famous V&A Waterfront! Fresh seafood and also offers seriously good burgers! Super full on weekends but make sure you get a spot outdoors!
JC
Non existent service. Got up and left. Avoid. There's plenty other places around. Moving along although seems to be general problem around here.
Euvdore Lategan
The food at the place was very nice. We only had ribs though. But the waitress by the name of Lynette seriously sucked. Not one smile and it looked extremely painful for her to wait our table of 4. The place is very nice but our waitress spoiled our experience
Mike
if you don't mind bad service , expensive booze , worst food , poor live music then you should give a try . One more thing...my bottle of beer was R 45 and not R 25 as indicated below..
Rachel
I visited Ferrymans after a day at the waterfront to have a quick bite to eat before leaving.

We ordered the Prego roll and rib basket - both were quite tasty and decent value for money.

It was a busy Sunday so service was average.
Clayton Fraser Williams
Abysmal service. As in awful. Took 40 min to get our first drinks and another 2 hours to get a plate of onion rings and then another hour and a half to pay the bill.
Tegan Smith
Perfect for after work / shopping drinks. Ifnyoure a mojito fan you have to try their Pimms Mojito Jam Jar. It is absolutely delicious! If you're feeling like a snack, be sure to try their crumbed chicken strips as well as their chicken wrap as a healthy alternative. Great service and casual food and drinks - always love visiting!
Johan Brits
An okay option at the V&A for a quick lunch. Being a "tavern" the venue itself can be a bit cleaner but it fits in with the crowd.

The beef burgers are very well cooked and consit of a few interesting flavours. The one dissapointment is that the fish and prawn served taste like frozen fish, which is sad considering the atlantic ocean is 20 meters away.

The service is okay, but be willing to fight for your waiters attention during busy hours.
Tanya Jarvis
Generous portions, typical pub grub style food. Hake and calamari combo is a winner! Would go back for that for sure. Spent a festive afternoon and evening there watching the rugby. Try the onion rings.
Simon Lee
During our last evening in Cape Town, my friend invited some of her friends to a group dinner. As my friend wasn't too well, I selected a place that would sorta cater for everyone's taste.

I do like the Waterfront so I chose Ferrymans Tavern. Unfortunately it turned out to me a huge disappointment. Firstly, to put it out of the way, it was the food and not the service.

We all had a starter to share, which was the flatbread that had rocket, roasted peppers, feta and bacon. It was really the only palatable dish of the meal.

Next our mains arrived, and I had the rather lackluster Cajun calamari. It was just very average and nothing startling. My friend had the chicken wings and ribs basket. Her wings were poorly marinated and thus had not much taste. The ribs were the odd "long ribs" and not the standard type, thus making it rather difficult to eat. One of the other friends had a sea food basket which again was not well seasoned and palatable. The 4th main was the chicken livers which did look good but I didn't get the diner's take on it.

A very disappointing meal and we will not be heading back there at all.

Best breakfast I had on my first trip to Cape Town! Salmon Egg balls were fresh you would swear they were still swimming up stream! And the regular breakfast was delicious!
Zimkhitha Sulelo
It's always a good vibe and affordable. Service can be a bit slow because it's huge but the peri peri wings I ordered were good.

There is always good live music to keep you distracted and s play area of u have little ones.
Lauren Arendse
Pub grub styled food. Everything from burgers to mussels. The portions are of a decent size and filling. Well made and delicious. There is a large variety of beers, hard liquor and cocktails.

There was live music playing in the background, which gave a nice ambiance.

Perfect place to gather larger groups of people for a catch up, watch the game or general pre-night out.
Elaine Lahoud
Nice pub vibe, live band and good music! We really had a fun night out. The food on the other hand was not great at all. We had ribs that was tuff, chicken wings that was very hot and nachos that was ok.
LeMarc Gouws
A good spot with some great variety of drinks and beers.. Enjoyed the chilli poppers, and the burgers were ok as well. The best thing about it is the live music over weekends and the atmosphere.. Going here for drinks is great, for food is about average.
Katya Krat
Good vibes with live music and beers. Bad food and no value for money regarding the food that is. I will be back, only for drinks though. 👿👿👿

Always a good time at Ferryman's. One of my favourite places at the Waterfront, and that platter for two will always have me coming back. Service is great, and the live band adds that element of fun :)
Took my colleagues here for our end of year function, and they loved it too!
Lauren Lesley Bubb
Ferrymans is quite a staple for me. I enjoy the live music. However, if only their food could match Mitchell's (same kitchen right?). And the service is appalling. Never get a smile, get bombarded out the way by the waiters. Drinking spot, for sure. Stay away from the food!
Rene Keller
You know you are in for a fun filled evening with a wide variety of yummy cocktails, live entertainment and a perfect meal at decent prices. We always have a blast. Plenty of seats outside. Lap blankets / ceiling heaters makes it perfect for when there's a chill in the air.
MelbourneLops
Ferrymans is a great spot if you're looking for a vibe - they've got live music, ample outside seating, good food and lots of beer! Order a chicken and rib basket, grab a table outside and settle in for an afternoon people-watching. Service can be a bit slow but the overall feel is chilled and comfortable.
Tamaryn
Went there on my boyfriend's bi
rthday and was pleasantly surprised. Good food, laid-back atmosphere and good service. The food portions and prices were decent too. I'm more of a meat and veggie eater but even found their burgers to be delicious! Would definitely go back.
Amos
The food was bad. My t bone steak was burnt like an offering. The service from manager was appalling & not interested. Will never set my foot again at this place
Bronwyn Coltman
A great restaurant choice for lunch or dinner! It's in the perfect location at the Waterfront, very accessible. Their steaks are fantastic and the beef espetada is delicious! There's always great service here and it's just an all round success.
Darion
For the most sumptuous spicy wings, a wide selection of craft beer and a fantastic vibe, Ferryman's does not disappoint! The live music in the outdoor area lends to the "sit back, relax and enjoy" feeling, and the upstairs restaurant is comfortable and cosy. Our party went for the seafood basket, wings basket and steak prego roll with mash. All were delicious, but the wings were in a class of their own! Sticky, spicy and a generous portion for a decent price, definitely one to try... On the liquid side, the Milk and Honey always gets my vote, and is a perfect pairing with any of the items we chose. To finish, the chocolate brownie was delectable... Made nutty and served warm with ice cream. Great way to spend an evening!!!
Johann Malherbe
A perfect Ale house to have a couple of good crafted beer, the vibe is great and staff friendly, the food however is very little for that you pay. There is also live music bands, will vistit them again.
Bruce Storey
Great entertainment. The food was ok, the burger looked not pleasing at all, but I did enjoy the ribs & wings. The waiter was not that friendly, it looked like he wanted the day to end.
Ruan Spies
Very satisfactory if you come in with no expectations. The service was unenthusiastic and unaccommodating as I was told could not exchange the fries in my meal for salad. The coffee was poor and did not taste at all fresh. The food actually wasn't bad, but again nothing positively memorable or spectacular. The venue seems like a great place for relaxing with a few drinks but it is definitely not recommended as a meal setting.
Anamika Karamchand
Such an underrated place! My friends and I decided to give it a try one Saturday night, it was the best decision we ever made. Awesome live entertainment, huge portions of delicious food at very reasonable prices. Perfect place to have a few drinks with friends or grab a meal. Highly recommended, I will definitely be returning.
Zanel
I visited Ferrymans with the family when they were in town. We had a quick bite to eat while at the Waterfront and couldn't have been more happier with our decision to eat at Ferrymans. Our waitress was friendly, efficient and prompt. It was a lovely sunny day and we therefore chose to sit outside and dig into the baskets we ordered. A nice way to have a little of everything as we shared amongst each other.
Invisable CT
This was always my go to spot at the waterfront due to the vibe. The live bands and singers with outdoor seating makes it my kind of place. Love their basket combo's but value for money has dropped. A rib basket and rib and wing basket ( same price) but also same portion of ribs, to me that's crazy. We always had great service before but in the week we waited 15 minutes for the bill due the waiter " Not knowing where the manager is"
Ludi Cronje
As far as pubs go this one is unique due to its setting and atmosphere. Great spot to grab an ice cold beer, live music, ribs and rugby! Ribs come highly recommended. Nice spot if you have kids as there is a secure play area. Can get noisy if you are caught off guard by the live entertainment. Good friendly service.
Tabassum Smiley Aleem
For my friends birthday we decided to go to ferrymans to treat her. Not an ideal choice for me as i would need to eat halal things (its a nightmare going out with me haha) p.s im not that bad. So i emailed the manager before hand to ask if they had any 'halal friendly' things on the menu and he was actually quite helpful by emailing me the menu and suggesting things i could order such as fish dishes and going vegetarian for the night. As we got there the live band had already set up the perfect atmosphere for night. I opted to go straight to dessert and ordered an oreo sundae which was absolute heaven and the rest of the crew had things from ribs to chicken burgers. The virgin mojitos were really good too! Service was quite terrible to be honest and the waiting period for the food to arrive was a tad too long.
Louis Davids
Decided after a tough week that a good beer at Ferrymans was going to be a exactly what was needed,I had the espetada,Brandon the rump and the ladies each had a salad and prawns.
The espetada was Awsum, the Beer was thirst quenching to say the least, and the vibe amazing.
Leanne Davids
Its been years since eating at Ferryman's ...so being in the mood for a vibey pub grub experience, we thought this the perfect eatery at the V and A. I was a little disapppinted when i was served my 200g fillet with a side salad and paid R155... my plate looked just a little bit sparse...great vibey place for a Friday night though...
Helène Kleynhans
We've eaten here on a number of occasions, and I thought it time to say just how great it was every time! We've had breakfast, rib baskets, fish and chips, pot pies, quiches, flat breads (my favorite) and many more at Ferryman's, and it was delicious every time. Great pub atmosphere and bustling when enjoying a night out. Definitely one of my favorites to visit when we're in Cape Town.
Karan Sehgal
Superb vibe on the waterfront. Lovely live music. A decent bar menu and average food. Service is a bit dodgy though. Also, credit card required extra authentication as the outlet has been flagged previously for fraudulent transactions.
Zoe Lansdell
Dodgy place. The inside smells like an ancient brewery which isn't very pleasant. But the drinks keep flowing and hey have fantastic life music. Service is average and the food is below par. I'll go back for drinks only.
Welmie Loves Food & Wine
My husband and I enjoyed lunch here on Heritage Day. We had never been before but always wanted to pop by and they have a live band and a nice vibe. We ordered the current special for R25 per meal! When the food arrival we saw that the portions were small, like kiddies size. A bit disappointed as we were not informed of this. Never the less it was very good! I have no doubt that the main meals are big and just as good. I ordered a margarita cocktail and when it arrived it looked messy and rushed. It tasted the same too, I sent it back. Returning 1 min later with the same glass, same cocktail and a bit fuller (knowing they just added some lemon juice or something) I tasted it, was still bad, but I drank it anyway.

Over all great food!! Will definitely be back!
Jess Styles
I recently visited Ferryman's to take advantage of their 25th birthday specials, which include a variety of meals and drinks for R25. Fish and chips, burgers and chips, calamari, all only R25!

It really sounded too good to be true! Upon receiving our meals, I understood why they were only R25, they were children sized meals.. They tasted great nonetheless and were a great snack option to have along with your drinks. I do suggest if you are quite hungry to rather go for a full priced option.

The atmosphere is really great sitting outside, I love watching all the people go by and the live music really makes it well worth a visit!!
Chris Lazley
Great beer selection! Good service. They had a beautiful singer while we were there which, while lovely, was too loud - I couldn't talk to my friend. But the beer! Yes. Worth it.
SvN_lovedining
Ferrymans Tavern is always bustling when we go to the waterfront. We decided to have have dinner here one Friday night. We didn't make a booking and wanted to sit outside, so they made space for us by sharing a long table with another couple.

It is a perfect spot to dine at on a warm summer or fall evening and if you like love music def a great option.

We had the Seafood basket which was really good and the steak, which was not that great.

If you want a place with a great vibe and view, this is it. You you want great food... It is a pub.
Roy Bradley
Visited the restaurant on Sunday 8th June 2014.Wow!!What a disappointment! The attitude of the manager Mike Forester(?) sucks!!We ordered rare steak...we received what we believed to be medium!!Mr manager arrives telling us that is rare!!We dont accept that!!The next steak perfect!!Next issue ..We also ordered ribs which arrived cold!!Embarresed..we called Mike!I would think that a manager would understand that by reheating substances they become tough...not my boy Mike !!Same ribs !Twice as tough!!I now sit at home eating a toasted sandwich!!
Tessa Catherine Donne Randall
This is a lovely restaurant if you want to listen to good live music - little ol’ school and have a couple of drinks.
The food is pub orientated and nothing special too it. The waiters are friendly and always willing to help , but very busy.
They have a big area outside so on hot summers evening it is a great place to have some drinks by the sea.

***Meal Suggestion: Pork Spare Ribs***

If you visit the V&A Waterfront, you have to visit the most popular and probably oldest restaurant, Ferrymans. Whether you coming from the beach, or chatting up with friends, it's the place to be.

They have their own legend beer, served in a tall, frosted glass, mmmm yummy!! They atmosphere is always lively with live music in the back ground, and all kinds of interesting people hanging out there.

I visited this famous establishment in Wednesday night with a bunch of friends. Vibe, awesome. Serves- great. Food - sadly not so great. I know you don't go there for the food, but then rather have a smaller menu, and make sure it's good quality. The baskets we had for starters on the table, was delish. So maybe stick to beer, cocktails and pub style baskets.

All and all, a great evening, and a must visit when in Cape Town's biggest tourist attraction!
Bev Moss-Reilly
Riding on the wave of a supreme location like the V & A Waterfront should not allow any service provider located there to rest on its laurels. On the contrary, because this magnificent central hub of the Cape attracts a cosmopolitan crowd from all over the world, it should represent and boast the finest quality and supreme service irrespective of its wares.
As the Waterfront is a haven of restaurants one would imagine that competitiveness would be rife with each one "being on their toes" to attract custom.
Sunday afternoon 2 March 2014 presented highly unseasonal weather with sheets of rain giving relief to the preceding heat wave. The relevance hereof is that the need to sit indoors was thus in demand as opposed to the sea of onland people that usually spill out with opportunity to enjoy the scenery and ambience of one the greatest tourist attractions world wide.
I had been asked to organise a crowd of 13 people who would be meeting for lunch that day, 5 of whom were visiting from Scotland. Of course the Waterfront was the immediate choice that came to mind. Being a large crowd I knew it was prudent to pre book a table. My initial choice was really going to be one of those restaurants that offered the best view on the waters edge, but when phoning around to make a booking I found that almost all of them had the same annoying policy "no booking - first come first served"! I thus decided to book at The Ferrymans upstairs as I was aware that the upstairs restaurant took bookings and that a window offered a good view of our majestic Table Mountain......or so I was told! That was the first disappointment! We might have been located anywhere at all.
Upon arrival (at precisely 1pm) I was acutely aware that ours was the only table and that the rest of the restaurant upstairs was empty. The lack of ambience was palpable.
Everyone in our party was present and seated by 1.20pm. There were not any baskets of bread or rolls on the table.
We sat for a good half an hour before the waitron took the drinks order and a further 15 minutes before the food order was taken. By 2.45 we had still not received our food and were all very hungry. We requested bread or rolls three times before it was eventually brought to the table. It came on a small side plate with an insufficient amount for all at the table.
When approaching 3pm one of the party called for the manager who came and apologised with no feasible excuse whatsoever but a promise that the food was on its way. Twenty minutes later the food started to come out staggered. One of the party ordered quiche which she sent back saying it was most definitely not fresh. Another person ordered a calamari starter that was tough and microscopic on the plate. Having said that I will say out of fairness that the manager did replace these dishes with profound improvement.
The majority of the party ordered the house speciality being fish and chips. It looked absolutely delicious and extremely appetising and the portion size was abundantly generous but unfortunately tasteless.
By now the rain was pelting down and the restaurant had filled up by what we hope were more satisfied patrons. Would I choose to go back - definitely not! Would I recommend the restaurant - absolutely never. Do I feel there is room for improvement - without a doubt!
With the huge host of choices available at the Waterfront, in my opinion, Ferrymans would be a no no and I know that this is echoed by everyone present that day. They seriously need to up their game!

My first meal in Cape town. Pretty good. Saw the place first when walk to the waterfront and it looked pretty popular. So had our dinner out here.

Its a micro-brewery so beer is a must have. Quite some variety. We had a fruity beer. There is also some live music. The seating outside is great. The waitron was good with suggestions andd suggested a snack platter which turned out pretty filling.

Overall a great place. One of the best options considering price and taste. One thing I did not like about South Africa is gratuity. I feel its more of choice if you want to add it put it as service charge and pay required tax on it.

We visited Ferrymans on a Saturday evening , the mix of patrons was great fun, from European tourists to local Capetonains all very merry and dancing to the sounds of the local band that was playing , service was a little on the slow side but this possible due to it being a packed house
Food was standard pub grub , and the venues excellent atmosphere definitely deserves it the great rating

Ferryman's Tavern is a decent pub, situated right next to Mitchell's. It's your typical pub environment, the inside filled with rugby matches and smoke. While it was a bit chilly, we hung out on the patio, they had lots of heaters. They also had a live band so the crowd was pretty animated. For beer lovers this is a great place, tons of different beers on tap. The menu, nothing to write home about, typical pub food. We only had a couple of appetizers, the chicken trinchado was pretty good. If you're looking for a good time to drink beer with your friends, this is a great option. If you're looking for quality food and ambience, might not be your best option.
