A taste bud extravaganza of flavours...diverse yet complimentary all beautifully paired with wines from the Black Elephant wine estate. My favorites were a melt in the mouth seared Tuna with plum and marrow purée, Asian inspired broth, humus with pear and cumin flavored sorbet and finishing with heavenly white chocolate pannacotta accompanied with fresh honeycomb, slices of apple and other delights...would have liked an extra portion "to go"! The meal was a feast on the eye and palate and the portions were generous. Each dish had so many flavours...too many to mention...all blended together to create a culinary delight. An unforgettable meal...thanks Chef Julia!

All I had heard about Reverie Social Table Reverie was that the food was good - On that recommendation I decided to book for the 2 of us for a special occasion dinner celebration. Wow was I in for a BIG surprise - no intimate 2 person table - Th penny dropped, the name " Social Table " What an interesting concept one long table to meet new people (no one sat on their cell phones all evening) Now onto the reason I went there - good food - That was an understatement - Chef Julia is amazing, 5 courses of Taste Buds Heaven and even more beautifully presented plates. Each course is paired with the perfect wine. Chef Julia explains the pairing and the dish and as she explains it all you can really see it is her passion. I went there with no expectations and left with a feeling of having spent the evening fulfilled with really wonderful quality wine, food, company and a very different experience. I would definitely recommend making a booking at Reverie Social Table for an amazing experience. Put it on your Bucket list !!!!! Thank you Chef Julia and Staff.

I absolutely love Reverie Social Club both as a concept and as fantastic dining experience. Now I have to admit that I am gainfully employed literally two minutes from this restaurant, for the last two years I might add, and I was totally oblivious to its existence. Chef Julia prepares a set menu for a small group of approximately twenty diners, so booking is imperative and it really was an absolute treat.

We were the first to arrive and we mulled around enjoying a glass of the complementary Diemersfontein Sauvignon Blanc, as we waited for the arrival of the rest of the guests. Our party were the only South Africans barring another gentleman, with the rest of our fellow diners ranging from a group of Aussies, a young New York couple here on honeymoon to a German family on their second visit to South Africa and Reverie. And I guess this speaks volumes about the quality of the dining experience.

Now, I’m no social butterfly by any stretch of the imagination, but maybe this kind of setting and the wine on offer, makes one more relaxed and open to the “social” experience that Reverie is well known for.

Our first course of the evening was trout tartare with apple and fennel salad, sriracha, radicchio and black rice. Which was served with the Diemersfontein 2016 Rose, this was a lovely course and the black rice was an interesting twist, once upon a time reserved for the Emperor and forbidden to “common folk”.

Next was the Soup with pickled vegetables, smoked cashews, beetroot and radish with charred aubergine veloute .This course was delicious and the smokiness of the cashews was a nice addition. This course was paired with the Diemersfontein Shiraz.

This was followed by the main course was delicious karoo lamb with a lamb jus, broad beans, horseradish, vanilla cauliflower and roasted garlic served with the Diemersfontein Carpe Diem 2015 Pinotage . This was my favourite course for the evening, the lamb perfectly prepared and I enjoyed the charred rind, this might be too much fat for some but I loved it.

The next course was served with the second Pinotage for the evening and was perhaps the most interesting course on the evening. Cremona panna cotta, liquorice choc cremeux, hoisin sauce, coffee brioche crumbs. Now this was the savoury course and lovers of gorgonzola will instantly love this course, others maybe not so much as every spoonful seems richer and heavier than the last.

Last but not least was the dessert course. Persian orange and almond cake, with dried apricots toasted meringue naartjie curd and apricot sorbet. I enjoy all things tart and citrusy so this was a treat for me.

Reverie is about more than just fabulous food, and it really was fabulous. It’s about meeting new like-minded people perhaps, but more importantly it’s about creating an environment where social interactions and connections happen by default. A first for me, but most certainly not my last visit. This eatery is maybe not in the most fashionable part of Cape Town or Observatory for that matter but it certainly is a gem. Add it to your “Must Do” when in Cape Town.

If you’ve read my 2017 Must-Visit Restaurant List, then you’ll know that one of the spots I was dying to visit this year is Reverie Social Table. Turns out that dreams can come true – no matter how small –and I had the chance to join Reverie for their Paul Rene bubbly and food pairing dinner.

Spent valentine's evening here ....What an amazing, enlightening and tastebud exploding experience. My hubby and I spent Valentines dinner with friends at the amazing, cosy Reverie. Chef Julia was incredible, those dishes were out of this world and paired with amazing local wines.

All I have to say is that the food was exquisite, the service out of this world. Chef Julia, you and your team have an amazing thing going, the concept is fresh, exciting gosh - I actually have no words, WE will be back!

Beautiful evening with great people, sharing amazing wine and food. The influence from classic European cuisine and South African heritage is inspiring. Julia hosted with such techniques, passion and creativity. One of the best dinners we've had in town.

It isn't often that I am impressed, especially in South Africa.

Granted, this is part and parcel of the legacy of my late parents who fortuitously introduced me to the world's best from birth.

I am supremely blessed to have been exposed to the most glamourous Penthouse Hotel Suites of the planet, all First Class travel (including at least 38 trips on the iconic Concorde-British Airways being WAY better than Air France, by the way), not to mention being babysat in the kitchens of the best restos on the planet by the world's most renowned chefs, julienning carrots whilst said parents were, respectively, working and shopping.
No jokes.

And I loved it.

Not, and to be quite clear, for the glamour, ritz and glitz, as these are fleeting and superficial trappings appealing only to the most ill-educated and carnal of minds; but because I was mesmerised by the single golden thread that unites all these airlines, hotels, restaurants, cruises, casinos, tours and concièrge services.

Passion.

By osmosis, I absorbed that all these people, who were the very best at what they did, were motivated NOT by lucre and prestige, but by heart. They cared, deeply, about each and every expression of their work, which made them not artisans, but artists.

What a revelation!

This is why I am extremely happy to say I have zero elitism on any subject that crosses my path. Rather, I am most concerned with the FEELING I am imbibed with in the presence of the hot dog vendor, five-star hotel, Michelin-starred resto, First Class Suite or local market I find myself in. It is my all-consuming obsession...to root out those who BELIEVE in what they do and put their entire soul into their work.

Simply put...if there's no passion, there's no point.

So I was bowled over when celebrated Chef Julia tweeted me to swing past for lunch at her groundbreaking 18-seater space in Observatory - a Chef who can use Twitter!
Quelle MIRACLE! 😁

I almost broke a finger tweeting my instant acceptance, as I had heard of her signature style and space from quite a few sources.

To summarise...her resto has no individual seats, rather one long Valhalla-table, forcing folks to interact with each other. And there are no menus...she cooks whatever she feels in the mood to create, and sources fresh produce, wines, cheeses, meats and accoutrements on a daily basis. This she has so rightly labelled #SocialDining.
J'ADORE!

Oh..and, erm, she asks people to stay off their phones for the evening sitting, and switches off the WiFi at night.
(Deep breaths, James, deeep breaths....)

You need to know...I ALWAYS have at least 3 devices on me on 3 different networks, just in case two of them go down simultaneously and I'm out of touch.
No jokes.

This was like asking a terminal cigarette addict to suck on a lolly, whilst denying them nicotine patches AND simultaneously blowing smoke rings over their heads.
I just couldn't do it.
*hides face* 😳

So, we agreed on lunch the next day and off I tootled to Obs. The place looked and felt exactly like I thought it would.

Homey.
Relaxed.
Cute not kitsch.
Formally informal..or is that informally formal?! You know what I mean...even though it was ridiculously laid back, the service was flawless, fast and friendly.

And Julia?!
She sent word that she was temporarily busy (big function that night), and coffee was proffered via Wisdom, the major domo.
Delicious, smooth, silky coffee.
With a perfect foam cap.
And no pretentious description - what IS it with coffee these days?! I get that it's possible to screw up a cuppa Joe, but REALLY, people..."coffee tastings"?! "Coffee pairings"?!
Give me a break.

Or rather, just give me a cappuccino - yes, yes, I know I'm an uneducated peasant for drinking cappuccino after 10am, but I don't care. I like it before AND after a meal.
So sue me.

Ahem.
*coffee rant over*

Chef Julia subsequently emerged, all smiles and genuine bonhomie, and joined the two lovely random patrons I met and joined up with...see?! #SocialDining! They were huge fans of the space, and were having a business/girls lunch quite by chance - by the way, it is the two of them who held my phone in the Live Facebook video broadcast interview - see www.Facebook.com/jamescapetown 😇

Julia and I chatted for ages on Escoffier, Michelin (she worked in two spaces with stars), foie gras, truffles, and all things foodie. Her blatant love and reverence for the sanctity of cuisine shone like a beacon. She was humble yet energised, outspoken yet friendly, inclusive yet open...in short, the perfect hostess.

And the food!

Lunch was a hummus, feta, roasted veg salad paired with an Asian-inspired cold Beef, sesame, coriander noodle salad (both R50), and washed down with lemongrass plum iced tea(R16).

Whoa.
Just...whoa.
Like..whoa.

Each dish was perfectly balanced, with conflicting yet complementary flavours and textures married together in elegant simplicity to explode on the tongue in a symphony of salivation.

Rilly.

But my favourite thing was how Julia has created a space, down to the finest detail, that conspired to allow you to let your guard down and engage other people. It was no surprise to find out she lives directly above the resto, let alone that you have to walk through the actual kitchen past the bijou library (no jokes), to make it to the outside "smoking courtyard".
Which has a door to the back street.
And a staircase upstairs to her apartment.
And a palm tree.

I loved it.
All of it.
I cannot find a single flaw in any of it all.
Nor can I suggest a single thing be added or improved upon.
Or changed, edited, ameliorated, buffed up or taken away.

But don't take my word for it.
Go..as soon as you can.

You'll find you'll be pleasantly...impressed. 😳

Spaces like this is what makes Cape Town truly different. We were here for Matt Manning's One Ingredient evening and it was fantastic! Apricot menu and fine wine pairing.

Reserving this to 4.5 for now :) looking forward to the next one and see what chef Julia has up her sleeves *wink*

What a lovely concept! A fun night with people you know as well as people you don't know. Chef Julia and her team was so friendly and the place was very homey. It feels like I went to a friend's dinner party, almost walked out of the door without paying! *yuck*

Food was superb! 5 course-meal with individual wine pairing. From starter to dessert, each course was a surprise to my palette. All the ingredients and wine are from local source and seasonal picked. From boutique wine to boutique cheese, and home baked bread.

My favourite two were the 1st course - poached octopus with grandilla curry, curry didn't take over the dish! I could taste every single ingredients! Then it was the dessert - I mean tomato looking fruit as dessert?? And toasted coconut, oats, muesli and almond??!! Together with roasted pineapple purée... I can't even!!

I enjoyed every bite with a sip of wine, let the flavours danced around on my palette - very satisfied.

This place is crazy good. Even though we did a lunch sitting, we were treated as if it was a formal meal. Very kind, attentive waiter. The steak, blue cheese and poached prune salad was fantastic and so were the freshly made cordials and iced tea. Will definitely be back again
