Review Old Gaol Restaurant - Swellendam

The food was very tasty and well prepared. We had an incredible bobotie and home-made chicken pie. Lovely restaurant with outdoor seating and great service.

Best coffee I've had in a long while! Breakfast under the grape vines was really good value and was excellent. Service was prompt and efficient. Will be back here for sure.

Such a nice place to come. You can sit outside in the shadow of a big tree ehen it's hot. We had capuccino and carrott and chocolate cake - delicious!

We enjoyed lunch at the Old Gaol while being on our way to Mossel Bay. The place is very lovely and the service is such a pleasure. The lunch was ok, the cakes though were amazingly good! Try the traditional milk tart!

A lovely tucked away restaurant that has outside seating under trees. Good food and great value.

We were seated outside under the tree and enjoyed very good service today. Our waitress was very keen to always make sure we were happy. Reading the other reviews it looks like Old Gaol is really making an effort. The tapas menu has a lot of potential and this is the only reason why I would only rate it 4 out of 5. A more balanced and more classical tapas menu would make it a 5/5.

Once again I came here for their "moerkoffie" brewed using a low-tech traditional method and was delighted with it. Our other orders of burger, quiche and milkshakes all went down with lots of positive comments from all who sampled them.

Nice breakfast or lunch with Gin & Bear on tap. The best coffee & sweet treats in town, served in an arty interior setting. Easy accessible from the N2, either from Cape Town or Mosselbay with ample parking space. Exquisite cottages at Old Mill, directly next to the restaurant for lovely countryside stay over too...

We had a lovely lunch break here. We tried the home made chicken pie which was really nice. The homemade lemonade is also good. It is a cosy nice place for a stop over and I can only recommend to eat here. Staff was nice and friendly. Food came very quick!

Last night we joined the Old Gaol team at the launch of their new evening menu, as always the atmosphere was warm and the food was great! Together with Hermanuspietersfontein winery we had good food and good wine with new friends! I can highly recommend their new style of serving food tapas style but with a Swellendam/South African way! I will not try to write all the names of everything we tried but I can promise you that it was awesome! Make your way to Old Gaol Restaurant this winter Wednesday Thursday and Friday nights, and do not hesitate to try it ALL with a nice glass (no no, Bottle) of Hermanuspietersfontein's wine! I will recommend "Posmeester" Thank you Ilze & Wynand for a fantastic night out!

Today my family and I visited this restaurant for a cup of coffee and some cake and I ordered myself the mudpie cake, which was lovely untill I realised the cake was beginning to grow mould on the outside, and was obviously so repulsed I refused to finish it. When we notified the staff they calimed that it was just yoghurt (since when is yoghurt fuzzy??) And then instead of offering a refund offered a second serving � Of mouldy cake? No thank you! Rotten food in the food industry is a BIG NO, let alone not taking responsibility for your fault. Never again.

I had a veggie roosterkoek, my friend had soup and roosterkoek. Both lovely BUT came with margarine, not butter. It's not even about the menu saying butter. Just. Don't. Do. It. No decent restaurant should serve margarine with anything. On the plus side again, service was good, the waiter was nice and the coffee was very good, which is very important!

Vorige keer hier heerlike vars roosterbrood met roereier en biltong gehad en so al my vriende van hierdie plekkie vertel. Vandag het ons gister so opgewarmde roosterkoek gekry sonder dat die kelder ons vooraf n keuse gegee het. If it is on the breakfast menu then you have to be prepared to serve roosterkoek fresh. Die kelnerin het nt saggies gese jammer, die bestuurderes is skynbaar nie hieroor ingelig nie. So hier stop ek en my vriende nie eer nie

We enjoyed a cozy evening at Old Gaol as a group with friends from abroad. The Tapas menu were refreshing and the perfect way to social over a meal. Dirk and his team were the perfect host and made sure we receive excellent service. Highly recommended.

Well worth the drive to Swellendam! The most wonderful curry and bobotie you will find. Do not miss out on the authentic milk tarts as well.

Sadly no service what so ever. There were hardly any guests yet the ladies who serve happily chatted inside for more than 10 minutes, which is totally unheard of. Milk tart ok, cappuccino unf not strong enough.

The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Delicious food and good service. A must if you are in Swellendam.

I had amazing melktert here a that ago that I told everybody about. Today I purposefully made Swellendam my halfway stop (during my 5 hour journey) just to get a piece. Unfortunately after eating half, I just couldn't pretend it would get any better. It was so dry and stodgy :( It didn't seem fresh and maybe had a little too much flour in the mix? Anyway, I told the waitress and she came back with the full bill (I guess I should have paid for it since I had at least half of it) and said the manager said she'd chat to the chef. I don't know if anything came of that, seemed a pretty disinterested response. Besides waiting for a while for our order and the disappointment, the coffee was almost a redeeming feature.

Almost no menu to talk about.Add more foodstuff to the menu.

Awesome little restaurant with good food under beautiful trees across the road from the church. We will be back for sure!
