Review Manor Kitchen - Stellenbosch

Wambui Kimani
I celebrated my birthday here with the high tea on a Saturday afternoon. The staff were lovely and attentive. The food was of a good portion, and tasty, and they made the appropriate adjustments for those with dietary requirements without a hassle. The room was beautiful and bright, and there was an incredible piano player who added to the ambiance.

This is a restaurant with a rich history that it’s not running away from. Manor Kitchen is honestly ‘Rustic’…but with a healthy serving of Sophistication. The flagship Lanzerac eatery seamlessly manages a delicious balance of sophistication and simplicity – from their Sunday lunch to the decadent Afternoon Tea, and meals such as breakfast and dinner. Its breakfast is a humble brag born of excellent quality ingredients, adding trusty brunch & breakfast picks to the menu, and having a dependable team in the kitchen. If you’re parched or pacing yourself, there’s a good drink to dive into! The estate’s own varietals are great for seasoned wine lovers, as well as those getting their first introductions.

I recently made the journey from Cape Town to Stellenbosch to try the seven-course dinner paired with Lanzerac’s award-winning wines at Manor Kitchen. It was a lovely experience and a wonderful value. The dishes were creative and inspired and paired nicely with the wines. The tuna tartare dish was one of the best bites I’ve experienced in my culinary life. My only constructive feedback, which I’ve shared with the establishment, is (1) for the bread course, the clay pot needs to either cooled longer before being served or come accompanied by some type of mitt for diners to hold it with while removing the bread. It was fingerprint melting off your hands HOT. (2) Some of the wines were too cold when served and did not develop their full flavor profile until the end of the respective dish. We appreciated the sommeliers’ openness to discuss this (she is fabulous!) (3) Lastly, children talking loudly, singing, and running around grabbing the backs of chairs in the mostly empty dining room like it was a playground was highly disruptive to the elevated experience. Neither the staff nor the parents visibly did anything to curtail the unruly behavior. For the time and money spent on this experience, an adult atmosphere would have been greatly appreciated. Overall, I recommend this experience.

Superb. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff friendly and competent. Atmosphere romantic, soft piano music. Fresh flowers.

The setting is beautiful. The trees and squirrels running on the lawn make it a peaceful and idyllic place to go for a great lunch staff and service is friendly and professional. The food and wine selection is diverse with something for everyone. Beautifully presented food that tastes so good. It is a bit expensive but it was worth every cent.

Absolutely everything about our experience was amazing! The food was extremely good and it didn’t take a long wait at all. The wine top level. The service was just outstanding and the atmosphere high class! Would love to return to this place one day.

Truly amazing place! Such a good vibe, everybody’s so lovely, happy to help and made our day. Brut methode classique was exactly what we dreamed of to chill in a beautiful garden before the sunset!

We had a great time there.

I cannot describe in words nor with adequate English the joy we've experienced here. The furniture and decor are relics with souls that are reminiscent of better days far gone and yet to come. The majestic wood interiors create a sense of warm wonder that stirs a feeling of home away from home and the sense of comfort and relaxation sets in. The wine was clearly a table favourite by the great Dionysus and well received and utterly enjoyed by us mere mortals. The chef wowed us with his dexterity and gifs for the art of making food, for a burger and a pork belly never tasted so good. The dessert was a show stopper as all conversations died away like the last burning logs on the hearth.

Beautiful wines & a beautiful location. The waiter was witty & very knowledgeable - he was also very generous! A great late afternoon visit - enjoyed by every one in our group

4.5 stars. Honestly was a pretty stunning winery! The only thing I wish was that the terrace where they serve food wasn't overlooking the parking lot. I wish the views from there were of the estate.

World class resturant in every sense of the word. The reaturant. The food. The presentation. The feel and finishing are awesome. It is a beautiful place. The food was out of this world. We enjoyed the 4 course meal that was on the menu. Pork belly to die for.

An absolutely fantastic restuarant. The food is freaking delicious, and very decadently priced. The service is very professional and friendly. Had a bottle of wine with our lunch. The bathrooms are very clean. The setup is beautiful. Would definitely recommend you visit. It was a fantastic experience. Very relaxed surrounding.

This place ticked all the boxes for me. The right amount of options on the menu, the food was delicious, exudes luxury, cotton hand towels in the restrooms, stunning deco. Anthony gave us the right amount of attention. A new favourite for me.

Had a wonderful afternoon tea experience. From the piano playing in the background, great service, beautiful space, glass of MCC and tasty tea treats - great value overall!

The scones were incredible! It also included fresh cream and absolutely divine strawberry jam. I would definitely recommend coming here for a lazy afternoon.
Yummy!
It could have been that we were hungry and everything just tasted so good, but it was more then just satisfying your hunger. The gnocchi was delightful, the salads fresh and inviting. Mains were a delicate balance of flavor. A real treat that complimented the exquisite surroundings.

Staying at the Lanzerac means not much can persuade you to leave the room. The restaurant, however, did. Fine dining at its best - a range of options to include vegetarian, pescatarian and meaty dishes, all beautifully presented. It’s an elevated classic food - comfort food- experience, taken to the highest possible level.

Been here a while back for a wine tasting, which was very lovely - overlooking a very picturesque estate.

Feeling peckish, but not hungry, we then went to this very regal lounge setting at the entrance of the Governor's Hall. Ordered 2 starters, the scallops and the bobotie samoosas; and some tea. Those scallops though... soooo delish!

Haven't been back to do a full meal yet, but very much looking forward to it.

The name Governor's hall is befitting to this restaurant. It feels like a place were you can have a masquerade ball in fancy ball gowns. The furnishings are sophisticated and the venue itself has portraits all overThe staff is world class. People who are passionate about what they do. They made us feel like royalty. The food is gastronomic explosion, culinary excellence. I recommend a three course meal. But it feels like a 7 course meal because of the attentive process that is followed in serving and presenting the food. Dining here caters to all senses in a beautiful way. It truly is a well rounded dining experience. I have been here a couple of times and every single time, I fall in love again. Lanzerac wine estate on its own is a haven - beautiful, picturesque and scenery. Upon entering Governor's hall you ought to relax with a glass of wine or cup of tea at The Craven Lounge and just admire the antiques,

Lanzerac is utterly beautiful! We happily found this gorgeous estate by pure accident, but will be sure to follow this first visit with many more! The staff are delightful, knowledgeable and completely at ease with customers. We shared the oysters- delicious and fresh! And the milktart with poached pear dessert- not only beautifully presented but so wonderful! The taste experience was well rounded with a bottle of the wine farms own Sauvignon Blac- light, crisp and easy to drink. This restaurant deserves to be frequented and scores maximum points!

The atmosphere is something truly special, elegant, warm, romantic, intimate and extremely classy.
Food was great especially the desert.
Will certainly return for more.

Did a easter lunch here last year. Was fully booked and with good reason. Food was great and the dessert buffet was awesome. Great place for families and the service was good and friendly.

What a beautiful setting! The service is good and friendly. It was a set menu. The mushroom started was excellent and bursting with flavour. The salmon starter was well presented but the salmon lacked freshness. The oxtail main was well presented and the sauce complimented the dish. The meat did not fell off the bone as expected. The kingklip was tasty but some of the flavours was to subdued in the dish. The panacotta desert lacked taste and was disappointing. The orange chocolate torte was good. The macaroon did not compliment the dish.

An extremely convivial ambience. The Simonsig Gewurztraminer 2014 proved to be God's nectar...
Starters were highly rated - light smoked salmon trout, sesame crusted camembert & calamari in chilli, soya & coriander broth were thoroughly enjoyed.

Line Fish of the day (Kingklip) was well prepared, so too were the beef ribeye steaks.
Char-grilled chicken & prawn curry was enjoyed by those who ordered it.

The tiger prawns in light asian batter was a total abortion, but tasteless boiled prawns were prepared & plated!!! All 3 guests returned their boiled tasteless tiger prawns & opted for burgers instead

The Lanzerac gourmet burger was well prepared but a bit 'bland'... Some of which were served with sweet potato chips, but one wasn't.

The Governors Hall at Lanzerac is not a highlight of the winelands dining options! Try Tokara or Indochine instead

Beautiful estate. You have the option of dining al fresco on The Terrace or inside in the beautiful Governors Hall. Had a reservation for dinner at 7 but got there early so had drinks at the adjoining pub "Die Taphuis". Real old school feel about the place with Hermanus the barkeep being in the business for 40 years. Made me an awesome off the menu whiskey cocktail.
Was seated at 7 and got a smoked salmon appetiser. Nice. Started with the seared scallops with pulled pork tortellini. Was a really good dish but pasta was slight dense and undercooked. A little bit too el dente for my liking. Then received a palate cleansing "intermediary" strawberry and mint sorbet. Next was the mains: my wife ordered the slow cooked Lamb Shank on a bed of risotto and I had the cured bacon and sage pork belly. Both dishes were fantastic. Lamb was fall apart tender and the bits of apple with my pork dish really did it for me. Ended up not ordering dessert as had been nibbling all afternoon being there but got a surprise visit from the chef who had come to our table to apologise for the undercooked tortellini and brought with him 2 bowls of homemade vanilla ice cream with dark choc. Really nice touch but ensured the chef we were not upset or angry about the tortellini it was merely constructive criticism. Was taken in really good spirit.
In all, comes highly recommended and will def be back for seconds. In particular looking forward to Hermanus the barkeep mixing me up some more off the menu cocktails!

Fantastic buffet breakfast with a huge selection of cereals, fruits, pastries, savoury bites of cheese and meats as well as hot dishes and fresh juice. There is also an a la carte breakfast menu which we ordered off and it was delicious. We went for the Classical and the South African breakfast. Fresh, tasty and everything a good breakfast should be. I will definitely try the morning poppy seed flapjacks next time 0 crispy bacon, caramalised banana, syrup and crème fraiche YUM.

Superb Sunday lunch. Great service, delicious, delicious food. Lovely background music. Just loved everything about it. Wasn't a problem for the chef to switch something off my main which I thought was great. Well worth it. Wine and chocolate tasting is a must after!

Absolutely delicous. My husband had asked me to marry him the day before. It was a weekend full of spoils and Lanzerac did not disappoint :)

I have always had great food here (on four previous occasions), I can't fathom why other people often give this restaurant mediocre reviews. I had pork belly which was superb; my wife had fillet and she swooned over it. Everybody else in the party also enjoyed their food tremendously. The setting is fantastic. Service is great. Price: slightly expensive but the menu also have cheaper options. a Real hidden gem and easy to get a booking.

I came here with my wife for brunch. It was nice. Of course, the location is beautiful, both the buildings and the surrounding farmland.

We had the eggs Benedict and breakfast burger. Both delicious. They also serve breakfast champaign which was nice.

You'll have to decide for yourself if you ever go, but I wouldn't pay for the breakfast buffet. It doesn't look worth it.

Wow! What a fantastic spot! We had a business dinner there and I must say, it was a fantastic choice. Based on the website it did seem a bit stiff for our company's culture but boy was I wrong. Don't get me wrong, the place is fancy and impeccable, but the staff were bursting with friendliness and cracking jokes to make all the guests gave a good chuckle and loosen up a bit. The Lanzerac Pinotage (award winning wine) is delicious and comes highly recommended. They served palate cleansers between meals. For starters the avo and prawn were delicious, mains I had the lamb shank which was slow cooked in pinotage wine on a bed of risotto, by far the best lamb I have had in my life, melt in your mouth quality! Finally for dessert I tried the Orange Pana Cotta. The balance across all the meals I tried was perfect and none of the flavours were overwhelming, instead it complemented each other in ways you can never even dream of. I would also highly recommend a night cap in the cigar lounge in front of the fireplace.
