An absolute gem of a dining experience! The location is idyllic, tucked away under beautiful trees with the soothing sound of river water as your backdrop. The ambience is further elevated if you opt for their private room, which boasts a fireplace that adds to the cozy atmosphere. Service was attentive, and the food was delicious. Everyone at our table was thoroughly pleased with their meals. On top of all that, the pricing is quite reasonable. This is one of those rare places where you’ll want to linger longer. Highly recommend and can’t wait to return!

Absolutely excellent setting. Th staff are exceptionally well trained and very friendly. Even though the restaurant was at capacity, the food was served very quickly.
The atmosphere is great - both inside and outside. I absolutely loved the inside decor!!!
Enjoyed Springbok steak, the rest had Oxtail and Lamb shank.. Perfect. If we may suggest something... A little veg on the side with the Lamb shank would complement the Mash.
My absolute favourite thing about this restaurant is the location and the ambience. I loved being seated outside under the trees with the sound of the river water in the background. The service was good and the food was delicious - everybody at our table thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the plating was beautifully done. I would love to see some more vegan and vegetarian options, but would definitely recommend this restaurant and return again in future.
Personally I consider "De Volkskombuis" a hidden gem. Food is amazing and prepared according to your instructions - which is an underrated luxury. The atmosphere is so calming and the fact that you have the option of outdoor seating in the garden is a treat on its own. The service matches the food, and the waiters are very informed and knowledgeable about their menu - feel free to quiz them lol. This place is suitable for a business lunch/dinner, family treat or even just a 1-on-1. PLEASE GO AND VISIT!
The staff is great and really well trained: Professional and friendly - you don't see this everyday.
I was somewhat disappointed in the food and I expected a lot more (maybe my expectations were too high?). I ordered the fish (which was one of the recommend dishes) but is was dry. The sides were nice though. The lamb shank and steak we ordered were soft and cooked well, but flavourless. Pizza was OK, with a nice thin crust. I am yet to find a really nice pizza place in Stellenbosch.
Honestly: i had only a ‚light‘ afternoon snack at this wonderful place. But i must say - i cannot remember eating such a delicious burger. With this stunning venue. Great service, super stuff. Five star and see you soon again!
