Review Genki Sushi - Stellenbosch

Christelle Els
We really enjoyed our food. We had the calamari tubes and oxtail dumplings for starters and the salmon roses, rainbow rolls and spicy tuna rolls. The sushi was fresh and tasty and decent portions. Only criticism would be on the service. We had to try and get the waiter’s attention multiple times and we waited quite some time for our starters. Otherwise a really good experience and great atmosphere outside as well.

Delicious food! Beautiful restaurant! The prices are also good. Just keep in mind they do get busy very quickly, book ahead if possible. But highly recommended this restaurant.

I walked in for dinner without any reservation and they gave me a table anyway. The food was generally good. I've had Japanese food many times everywhere I go and I pay a lot of attention to the sashimi and the miso soup. Here the sashimi is really fresh, so I'm quite happy with it. The miso was alright but too salty. I also had pork bao buns and the meat flavouring/ marinade tasted quite enjoyable. Their prawn tempura was nice, too but I would prefer the daikon to be fresh to balance the fried tempura, the daikon here was like styrofoam.

Went for dinner. Sat outside. Was busy. Very friendly and helpful staff. Quick service. The handmade pork dumplings and dragon roll (eel) were our favourites. Great atmosphere. Thank you!!

Great menu! Pork belly in the bao buns was hard and crispy (like crispy bacon) as opposed to the usual soft and crispy of pork belly - which was different but nice! Disappointed that black sesame seed ice cream, and the coconut milk drink was not in stock.

We enjoyed our meal at Genki however none of the dishes were anything to write home about. In a few cases the food tasted rather different than what we're used to in the States (especially the miso soup). I don't want to penalize the restaurant for this but it's something to keep in mind as a traveler. Great value and definitely a popular spot.

Went to Genki for the first time a few nights ago and I LOVED it. The food is affordable and really really good. I love how generous they are with their MCC by the glass and the owner is welcoming and friendly as well as the service staff. I will definitely be back. Well done Genki, 10/10.

The whole experience was 15/10 from start to finish. The food, the sake, the staff, the atmosphere was impeccable. Can't wait to come back and have the Pork Belly Ramen with some sake again soon!

The sushi in itself was really really good, buttery enough to melt in your mouth and very fresh as well. The service was nice too, we didn't have a reservation but got notified via WhatsApp quickly once a table got available, and our waitress - although very busy - was sweet. Only thing we weren't super excited about was the time it took for the food to arrive - we waited for about 45 min for two platters of sushi to arrive, while the table next to us mysteriously got served much quicker after having a chat with the manager.

Enjoyed my date with my daughter at Genki. She had the pork dumplings and i had the Ramen. Both was top class. Will come back for the Japanese tapas with the family. Almost got the feeling that the tourist got more attention than us..but no, cant be that.

Very nice Japanese and Sushi restaurant. There is inside and outside seating, however seating inside is very limited, and if you don't manage to get a booking inside, you will be forced to sit outside, which is what happened to us on a cold night. Due to the weather, we did not stay too long. We ordered steamed buns and sushi as starters, and decided to leave soon after. The Pork Belly Steamed Buns however were delicious and filled with so much flavour - the buns were nice and soft too. The sushi was fresh. I am keen to visit again to try more of the menu, but definitely on a warmer day/night.

Fantastic and quick service. Can't fault this little restaurant for a single thing. The food was fantastic and super filling. The menu brings a variety of Japanese meals that you will love at a super affordable rate. Will absolutely be back.

Very fresh fish and delicious sushi. Good selection of wines by the glass or bottle from surrounding vineyards. Lots of seating outdoor in the courtyard under umbrellas and inside. I would recommend making a booking to secure an outdoor spot. Service was good but quite a bit of a wait for the food during the lunch rush. The Philadelphia rolls used smoked salmon not fresh. The spicy salmon and avocado roll has a perfect kick of spice.

This little spot is a hidden gem. The Food that we ordered was delicious and had an authentic taste with a slight twist to make it there own style. Will be popping past here in the future when in the area again.

Great value for money. When placing the order I wasn't confident it would be enough for the table but they proved me VERY wrong 🤣 and this time I was happy to be wrong. Next time we're in the mood for sushi, I'll drive past a dozen places to come back here. 😋

Fantastic place! They share a menu with ‘The Little Fish’ so you get the best of both worlds. The owners seem so lovely and the staff is always friendly. Always book a table just to be sure, they are very popular so it’s hard to find a table without a reservation. Truly one Stellenbosch’s best hidden gems!

Nested inbetween the boutique shops in the heart of stellenbosch on a gorgeous cobble stone walk way you will find the hidden gem Genki . This is by far one of my favourite asian restaurants. I absolutely love their food . Their dumplings are a must try and my favourite was the steamed bun with pork . The portion size was perfect for me because I don’t eat much and the dish was flavorful. Service is slightly slower and different here . Due to having 3 kitchens our dishes arrived at different times . Staff seemed uninviting at first but did warm up eventually. Overall a really great place to eat if you seeking a different flavor journey and style of food .

Location is great.
Service was slow.
Waiters can be a bit more assisting.
Food was kinda tasteless.

Feel that the sushi is overpriced. There is a lot of sushi restaurants in Stellenbosch that’s cheaper and has better sushi.

Brilliant sushi in a quaint courtyard in the centre of Stellenbosch. Great atmosphere , friendly service which provides for an amazing experience!

Everyone else seems to really like Genki. I don’t quite see what the fuss is about.

My food was quite nice. I love the fact that you can order small meals – their tapas style and sushi menu is quite cool. The interior is kind of dark and intimate – I think you should go there by yourself or with only one other person for an intimate lunch and dinner. The décor and atmosphere isn’t the only reason why I’m saying this...

We were five people and were seated next to the very tiny kitchen at one of their three ‘big’ tables. All of us flinched around four times from hearing the loud clatter of dishes being washed. Three of those four times I was sure something broke. (Nothing did, luckily, but it sure sounded that way.)

So, sitting this close to the kitchen made us realise why the food took so long – it’s a really small kitchen, almost like it’s too small for the number of people it has to provide food for. My Japanese steamed buns with pork belly arrived well ahead of everyone else’s meals. I did hold off eating for like 5 minutes, but realised that if I wait any longer for their food to arrive, mine would be freezing. So I tucked in, and it was very tasty and unlike anything I’ve had anywhere else.

Everyone else’s meals arrived just as I finished my two buns (and I’m a slow eater). That was quite odd to me that it took so long to bring their meals. Two were sushi plates and the other two meals were also cooked food. To me, that was quite unprofessional that the meals weren’t all brought out together, or at least within a few minutes of each other.

Our waitress also took quite long to clear our tables, which just added to my frustration.

Nevertheless, we had a good time, and their sushi looked good. If I go back it will be by myself with a good book (giving me something to do while I wait for my food) and I’ll sit outside, far away from the clattering dishes.

Such a friendly place , feels like a local. Beautiful sushi and dim sum. And great Japanese salads. My favorite is the White Bait that takes you back to early days with my parents . Rainbow reloaded is the best this side of Vancouver

I’ve been to Genki many times and it just keeps getting better. I highly recommend the Pork Bao and the calamari tentacles! They are amazing! Sushi wise- best quality in town , without a doubt! Fresh fish -ALWAYS- and the staff are always friendly. I recommend making a booking before-hand as it is quite small!
Best sushi I’ve had in Stellenbosch - Lovey traditional Japanese food and beautifully situated. Wonderful service and staff. Will be back soon!

Was too tired to sit down so ordered take a ways. 3 things of note: service impeccable even though it was only take outs. We were constantly checked on and informed how long it will be; it's such a cute place simple decor and pretty and lastly; the food....freshest sushi ever. A bit pricey but worth it; usually one has to play spot the salmon in a roll but they were very generous with the fish they put it. Keen to go for a sit down next

The restaurant itself is nothing amazing but the service is really good and their sushi is super fresh. At first they were sold our of fish so we had to wait and come back but is well worth is. They also have a great wine variety!

Some of the food is alright , a lot of it is far too salty though. Do not order the Shoyu Ramen, especially not if you're expecting to receive a Shoyu Ramen. It's clear that nobody at Genki has practiced preparing a Ramen or in fact has any knowledge of one's composition. Many of the waiting staff (with the exception of one waiter, one waitress and the manager) are incredibly rude, and don't have any grasp of the basic courtesy required in the service industry.

Such a beautifully quaint little place. We always come here for the sushi and the RAMEN! However, we haven't been back for a long time because twice, we had negative experiences with the waiting staff. The waitress in both occasions was rude. We felt that because we were students we were not prioritized and watched as our order of edamame which we orders before a table was sent to that table.. haven't been back since and if we did, would probably just do take away.

One of the best sushi places in Stellenbosch! Prices are a bit steep compared to the other sushi joints in town however it's the freshest sushi I've had in a while. So I think it's worth it if you prefer quality over quantity.

Sushi bar situated in De Wet Square courtyard in Stellies. The place has a nice ambience but the sushi was average. The pork dumplings however, were delicious and tasty. I never enjoyed the crazy prawn rolls as the tempura batter wasn't crispy enough at all. Might give them another try when in Stellenbosch again.

Wow now this place is is fantastic it's between a allay it's fantastic vibe!! Staff is well trained and know what you doing!! The food is really out of this world some of the best that I had in a long time and it's fresh and well presented.
I will def be back for more keep up the good work have a well oiled machine!!!
Sara
The sushi at Genki is so fresh and good! When you walk in you can smell the sushi straightaway and the inside of the restaurant is really cute. The sushi is some of the best I've had.

If you love sushi, but find the variety of your everyday sushi restaurant a bit lacking in innovation, you will be glad to have found this itty bitty jewel.

They take your idea of sushi to the next level. I don't want to give away too much, so all I'll say is make a date with Genki, because they'll sooo make it worth your while, and your riches (oh, I forgot to mention, you better go just after payday because perfect certainly isn't cheap)!

Phenomenal sushi. Highly recommend this restaurant for any sushi lover. Book early to secure an outside table.

We had the rainbow rolls reloaded and the salmon and cream cheese spring rolls.

Firstly our takeaway order was wrong, and more seriously, the majority of the dishes we received were absolutely revolting. Don't bother with the miso soup or salmon and cream cheese spring roll. Bland as hell and totally unsatisfying. Sushi was standard.

Fantastic food. Fresh sushi and amazing tapas. Had calamari tentacles and salmon rolls. Fantastic. Awesome service. Interesting menu. Will be back.

Great Japanese food and not only sushi, I can't eat rice and always find delicious other options. Good local wine list, restaurant supported by the locals, reservation highly recommended

In the event of extreme heat, nothing beats sushi!
Genki in the heart of Stellenbosch just offers this.
They have an amazing offering of Sushi.
Real value for money
Great lunch venue.
Looking for your next romantic date and new daring cuisine (Ok the Sushi is not too daring but how's about a Japanese Beer or even the eel California rolls?) This is it. Surreal courtyard setting at night, great service and the best sushi in Stellenbosch. The catch.... Get ready to drop dolla.

Situated in a little square in the center of town it's location is perfect and just so quaint. Many sushi lovers flock to this place. I on the other hand as a sushi lover am looking for quality and quantity in relation to prices. This place is too expensive for the sushi you get as well as the service offered. Cool vibe for after work but be ready to pay quite a bit for very average sushi.

Levels above Suki Thai, Hayashi and Sunfish Sushi... In my opinion, the best sushi in town! Though they also have warm Japanese dishes on the menu which I'm yet to try.

Their menu is more creative than the usual sushi place's - their soft shelled crab tempura, for example, is a must - and the atmosphere is quite romantic in the peaceful quad with lit candles on scattered tables and tasteful Japanese decorations here and there. If I remember correctly it's a traditional black, white and red colour scheme which makes for a less-is-more impression.

Most tables are outside, so it's ideal for when the weather's good. And prices are reasonable. I already look forward to going back again.

Utterly delicious food. Their bento box lunchtime special is great to share, but you will want to order another something to share. The tempura vegetables are crunchy, and not oily, they're so good I even enjoyed the marrow one. When available the soft shell crab is a must have.

Good service, yummy sushi and great Asian nibbles. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and the lunchbox which offers various bites gives you all the good stuff on the menu to try. Always a good graze!
Steven
Really nice Japanese sushi and tapas style restaurant. Sushi was good had a nice langoustine tempura - the batter was just a tad too thick though. The location is stunning, service is attentive.

I would go back.
Christian Locatell
Very tasty sushi and tapas with exceptional service and a great location.

We ordered the dragon roll and crunchy eel role. Both very good. We also had the calamari tapas. Very nice (though I would prefer it slightly crispier). The service was well above average. Prompt and polite. The indoor seating was nicely air conditioned, but there is also outdoor seating in one of the nicest little nook of shops in Stellenbosch.

Will definitely go back next time we go out for sushi.
