Review Erwin's Restaurant - Sandton

It has an old world charm. Still the original German lady running it. They do great fish. A pity the kitchen never informed us that there was an ingredient missing from the one dish
Andrew Cocks
Fantastic food. Genuine Swiss/ German cuisine on offer. Maybe a little quiet for some, but if you're party is big enough you can create your own atmosphere here. A different menu from the norm. Service was impeccable. We will definitely put this on our regular list of great restaurants.

Great atmosphere and fantastic cuisine! Swiss \ German menu; all dishes offer excellent quality and value for money. If you enjoy eating in fine dining style with table cloths, silver cutlery and relaxed service excellence you will not be disappointed.

As normal the ambiance and the food is out the top draw. We have been going there for the past 20 years and have never had a dud meal. Well done Erwins always a pleasure to be a customer.

We had an absolutely wonderful meal at Erwins yesterday. The tables are beautifully set with a crispy white tablecloth, . .....(My husband loves tablecloths on a table) ...a lovely centerpiece with fresh roses and beautiful cutlery with a cloth napkin. The food was absolutely delicious, a tomato soup starter, at least 6 salads which you dish yourself, lamb on the spit with vegetables, and the most delicious desserts.....eats much as you like. The bread and butter pudding was to die for. Although the restaurant was full, we were able to have great conversation. A really wonderful overall experience.

Amazing. Honestly a gem of a establishment. The Crepes were out of this world!

Excellent food, relaxed ambiance. Do not attempt the Sunday lunch unless you have someone to roll you out the door. Staff range from ok to good, depending on the day. Secure parking available.
Anthony Rosenbaum
Good old home style cooking. We all had a delicious. The service is efficient. All in all an eating place worth trying.

The best Swiss food to be had in South Africa. It's truly a hidden gem in the northern suburbs. Everything on the menu is exceptional. My absolute favs: Starters: Chicken liver pate. Garlic snails or the asparagus. Mains: Cordon Bleu. Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (stripes of veal in a creamy sauce with mushrooms). Potato roeschti( like a sort of Swiss hashbrown). Raclette. Cheese fondue. A must-visit restaurant!

Erwin’s is such a rare find for raclette cheese and Swiss fondue. It’s so carbo loaded and cheesy it’ll satisfy you for months! I remember we were here last winter and we ate till we rolled outta there. Well done! Great cheese and great breads!

Fine dining at its very best couple with a lovely ambience to match, the service comes always with a smile from the owner who runs the place. Staff has an amazing sense of humor . Well worth a visit , the food is outstanding too.

Lovely chilled ‘feel at home’ vibe, nice decor with good food and lovely staff, I recommend the duck or the steak tartare. Menu is short but good options and every meal has been good so far.
Been going to Erwin's since I was a little girl and the quality is and always has been excellent. The food is really made with love and care.
Amanda Scribante
We love Erwins. Good hearty food perfect for winter. The owner is lovely and rally puts her heart and soul into the food and restaurant. Waiters are brilliant. Steak tartare is the best I've ever had

Awesome food and service. It may be frequented by an older clientele but we still thoroughly enjoy an evening at Erwins. Never been disappointed with a meal. Can recommend anything on the menu. Even the homemade bread is out of this world

The decor may have been updated and be more modern European but the food remains just as outstanding as always. Erwins is an institution of gastronomic delight and is always consistent. The decor is warm, the service friendly and the owner attentive. She clearly loves preparing food for her 'guests' and one always feels at home. It was refreshing to see a younger clientele being attracted to the restaurant. Never fails to please

Erwin's is an institution! Swiss and French classics, prepared with love and quality ingredients make this a truly unique Johannesburg restaurant.

On our last visit we enjoyed Zuericher Geschnetzeltes: silky smooth sauce which includes some wine, tender veal strips and mushrooms. It’s rich and comforting served with crispy roesti (grated and friend potato) to soak up the divine gravy.

My dinner companions opted for the prawns and cordon bleu. YUM.

The restaurant has recently undergone a facelift and is a bit more modern. Think bold, warm RED teamed with an elegant grey.

The service is mostly prompt and professional.

Erwin’s also does a Sunday buffet lunch, which I haven’t yet tried, but it’s been well recommended.
I could rabbit on and on about the food and service at Erwin’s but it’s time to experience it for yourself!
Highly recommend!!!

Erwin's is definitely one of the best restaurants in Parkmore. It is a very special little place that has been part of our family for the past 15 years! If you want a good home cooked meal with personalized service then this is the place for you.
It is situated in a small quiet center called Parkmore Mews, 11th Street. They have just repainted the inside of the restaurant to red and gray and put a few new paintings on the wall. It looks more contemporary but still has the old school charm.

The menu has around 40 items on and everything that we have ordered has been delicious and the portion sizes are decent. All the meals get served with delicious sides like red cabbage, carrots, roast potatoes, butternut and my personal favorite creamed spinach.

The lady that owns this place is so inspiring, she cooks all the meals and manages this restaurant herself for the past decade after her husband passed away. I wouldn't want it any other way because you can definitely taste the love in the food.

This place is our little gem that we can always count on for a lovely meal. It is around R350 per person if you have a starter, main and dessert.

My personal favorites are as follows:

Starters:

1. Deep fried camembert with cranberry sauce
2. Prawn Cocktail
3. Duck Liver Patte with fresh home-made bread ( I can eat an entire bread with butter, that is how delicious their bread is)

Main:

1. Scampi Thermidor
2. Geschnetzeltes Nach Zurcher art served with Rosti
3. Cheese Fondue or Raclette ( Bookings in advance is needed)
4. Cordon Bleu filled with swizz cheese, smoked beef and fried in a pan

Dessert:

1. Chocolate Mousse
2. Cheese Cake

They also serve a lovely Buffet Lunch on a Sunday.

Erwin's is one of those rare restaurants where everything on the menu is truly amazing. The restaurant has recently undergone a light facelift making it more contemporary but keeping its good old home cooked Swiss-German dishes complimented by a generous selection of vegetables. Don't miss the homemade bread for starters - it's legendary!

What a special little place! Heart & Belly warming, good old fashioned service, charm and of course food! Tucked away in a quiet little Centre, I would not have even known that Erwin's existed had it not been for a generous Zomato voucher. Now that I do know, I most certainly want to return!! Perhaps for a cosy winter fireplace feast or a decadent Swiss Cheese Fondue or Raclette. (Orders needed in advance).

The menu is neat & concise and all meals are served with a bounty of delicious sides.(something unheard of in more "modern" establishments). My (simple) Scottish Salmon was the most delicious to ever pass my lips...crispy on the outside with a delicate soft pinkness on the inside, drizzled in just the right amount of lemon butter. On mentioning my satisfaction to the owner she humbly giggled saying "it's hard to get Salmon wrong!"

This remarkable woman not only cooks in & manages her late husband's namesake restaurant but also manages it, single-handedly, and has done so for nearly half a century!! And while the decor may be dated it is so comfortable, (and comforting!) and while the ambience is sedate, yet tranquil, there is real food for the soul in food prepared with such love!

There aren't many such places left in the world...enjoy them while they last!!

What a amazing hidden gem, romantic and truly wholesome moorish food, from the fresh baked bread, asparagus with burnt butter sauce, duck with cherry sauce. I also loved the bowls of vegetables that came with the meal especially the crispy potatoes. Probably the true high light is the Swiss owner who chats To you about the food and greats a really authentic ambience. We will def be back!!!

Thanks to Zomato we had the opportunity to give Erwins a try! If you can look past the dated decor and old school menu you will be in for a very pleasant surprise.

Really great food, with an very present and attentive owner. We had the duck with black cherry sauce and the Scottish salmon! Both were fantastic.. deserts didn't blow us away, but we left very satisfied.

A bit of a blast from the past.. but in a good way! Give these guys a try...

Awesome little Gem. The food was great and fairly priced too. The staff are super friendly and the ambience was quite personal and quaint. Although the decor is very old fashioned it weirdly suits the whole experience very well. Next time you are in the mood for something old school visit Erwin's.

great meals at erwin's again! tender veal, yummy duck and rich springbok medaillons followed by crepe Suzette made at the table the best and old fashioned way...a rare but great experience. great service too.

This is a very interesting hidden gem for the right audience and the right time. The look and feel of the restaurant and its patrons is mature to old fashioned - almost gives you a sense of what a restaurant would have looked like in the 60/70's. It might sound like a criticism but it is not, hence my comment about right audience and right time. Patrons are definitely of an older generation which makes for a relaxed and peaceful evening where you get treated to cooking like your mother/grandmother used to do it. It's really cosy and comfy. I had the salmon and it was well prepared with lots of flavor. What is outstanding are all the veggies that comes automatically with the mains but served in little side pots. It is far too much but so tasty and well prepared that you end up finishing it all. We have been back again and I will visit again when I want a home cooked meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

This place has been around for a long time and it shows. Decor needs an update, the food was great, the service good old fashioned. It has a very subdued atmosphere and seems to be frequented by their old faithful patrons. Good Swiss dishes with a home cooked feel

I love their food, but trying to get a reservation is an excercise in futility. I have today phoned 8 times, from 9:30 until 18:45, but all I get is a message that their box is full and I should try again later. I will not be going back! Tim Jooste

I love this restaurant. They offer a cheese fondue in the winter, and have an interesting menu. I will recommend duck at this restaurant, as they made it perfectly well. It is a very small and intimate restaurant, and ideal for a quiet night out, if you feel like really good food at a reasonable price.
Cdawg Dubya
Really friendly staff. Good tasty food with a more than adequate wine menu.
Efficient and well worth the trip.
Enjoyed thoroughly and apparently do fondue on request.
Johan Snyman
I love Erwin's. service is great. Food is very good, and it isn't part of the 'scene', so one can enjoy a quiet meal.

undoubtedly the best steak tartare in town, which Judith prepares at your table.
Mark
Booked an early family dinner. Unfortunately we were not informed that a large function was starting later and were crammed around a small table next to the toilet. Service was poor and rushed with the food being poorly presented as well as poorly seasoned. Reccommend the abrupt hostess learn how to greet snd communicate effectively. My starter of Gravelax included mud coated lettuce and the duck main was accompanied by a pale grey, bland cherry sauce. The experience was not worth the expense.

Erwin's is the "go-to" place for Steak Tartar. I have been going there for over 10 years and have had consistent service from Judith and staff. Her German bread is amazing and although it isn't the vibey place to be, it's a great place to enjoy great food and conversation
Estelle Swanepoel
Very cosy rather old school family restaurant. Probably one of the few, if not only places in Johannesburg where you'll find cheese fondue.

The duck and apfelstrudel were great, german efficiency in terms of service.
Thabiso.adonisi
Awesome intimate, warm restaurant. Service was impeccable, waiters there when you need them, not hovering when you don't. Food was delicious and homely. Will definitely be back
Michelle
Lovely Sunday lunch vibes although the average age of a patron is in their 60's. Never the less the food is hearty and desserts Devine! A great place to take your gran and gramps for a treat.

Erwin's, tucked away in the Parkmore Mews offers Austrian and typically Swiss food which due to their raclettes and fondues are in my top two cuisines. It is owned and run by Judith and we had a smiling face to greet us on Friday night into what was a full, homely and down-to-earth restaurant. I have spent a lot of time in Switzerland over the years and was craving a 'Les Diablerets fondue' as I refer to them now, in this typically winter weather.

On this first visit, I was not aware that in order to order a raclette or fondue, one needs to phone at least 24 hours before so sadly neither of my first two options were available. Instead, I selected the 'Kingklip a la Swiss' (filled with Emmentaler cheese) which arrived with a generous amount of optional sides and then the chocolate mousse for dessert. Another nice touch is that I also liked the complimentary fresh bread with a very healthy portion of butter on the side (pic attached). There is no scrimping on portions at this restaurant.

We were served during the evening by our waiter Colin who seemed miserable, but that may have been due to the incredibly busy restaurant.

Overall, I found the meal to be good value for money but I will have to reserve my final recommendations until I have tried one or both options that I actually went there to eat the other evening: the Erwin's raclette and fondue.

If you looking for the trendy set you got the wrong place. Rather homely atmosphere for a Sunday lunch, for the older generation. Packed out and limited space for the layout of food. salads and vegetables very limited choice but lamb on the spit delicious. Sweets were a good choice. Good for a for a family Sunday lunch but limitation on the menu and had much better roast at the golf club.

Great night out with family visiting from Aus. Delicious meals all round, the waiters are superb - a night can be made by being served with a great sense of humor who offers a lot of fun!!
A definite one to recommend...see you soon!
Daryl Chirnside
This is a consistently good restaurant, presided over with professional, knowledgeable care by the owner, Judith. It provides great Austrian / Swiss food, their Schnitzel, Salmon and line fish are always good. The red cabbage, really good spinach, and fried potato pieces side dishes are superb. The best thing about this place is the Sunday lunches. Judith arranges wonderfully fresh and innovative salads, and a great variety, followed by a succulent lamb on the spit with veggies. Their desserts are wonderful, a large variety, and some really good desserts. Will not hesitate to go back

A tad of 'Swiss Cuisine' without the cheese fondue. BTW the Fondue can be pre-ordered on the morning of your reservation - considerable effort for a pot of cheese. Nonetheless, expect mouthwatering European classics with rich veloutés. It's old school service certainly surpasses many of the best restaurants in Sandton. You are likely to feel very much at home - a lot like your ouma se huis. I'll be back.

Traditional well loved with a good dash of old world charm. This restaurant is an old favourite and the food is just as charming, full of flavour. Generous portions to boot.
Didn't book but it was a Tuesday, however a gentle reminder that weekends are always fully booked.
I had the duck liver pate and then the veal. My partner had the Camembert and then the onion soup.
Specials are always available.

This is a restaurant that has a class all of its own. The minute you walk through the doors you are taken on a journey to Europe - incredibly friendly and attentive staff make the dining experience a cut above the rest. I can highly recommend the fish which is cooked to perfection and you can taste the freshness - a truly wonderful restaurant for that love-filled family evening!

The decor and clientele make you feel like you've walked into the 1970's. The menu is solid, traditional Austro-Swiss specialties and they are all absolutely delicious. Generous portions and good wine list, make this one of our favourites.

A good friend of mine suggested Erwin's for dinner this week and what a wonderful surprise. This extremely charming Swiss restaurant is the real thing with all the usual Swiss dishes on the menu and a whole lot of daily specials as well. The restaurant itself is very old world with proper chairs, tablecloths, decent crockery and cutlery, and a lovely wood fire. The waiters are very efficient and courteous, with no hint of over-friendliness, and very knowledgeable of all the different dishes. Prices, for this class of restaurant, are very reasonable both for food and drinks (R17.00 for a J&B whiskey).
My friend had one of the house specialities (Schnetzeltes?), strips of veal schnitzel in a delicious cream and mushroom sauce (R135) and I had the Beef Stroganoff (R145) which was also excellent. The dishes were accompanied by rosti, red cabbage, butternut and creamed spinach, all perfectly cooked. The portions were sufficient for second helpings or sharing and, which I found very clever, the mains are served in pans with lids on which are taken back to the kitchen to be kept warm until one is ready for the second helping. Sadly, we did not have room for dessert (all homemade) but the many guests around us were clearly enjoying theirs.
Apparently, one of the highlights is Sunday lunch (booking essential) which consists of soup, a salad bar, lamb on the spit with all the trimmings and dessert, all for R175. I certainly intend trying this soonest.
The entire evening with mains, drinks, coffees and a tip came to R460. Excellent value for money. I'll be back!
Martini
For me this is one of the most gracious restaurants in Johannesburg. I've been going there for a number of years and have never had a bad meal. The owner Judith is also one of the most charming people and nothing is to much trouble. I did find one of the waiters too familiar but I suspect he has been spoken to.
I differ from the annotation that this is an African restaurant. ..... It's a Swiss restaurant.
If there's one dish I can recommend there is the Crepe Suzettes! Best in the world. So funnily enough are her prawns! Genuine LM.
I can't see anybody being disappointed going there unless they don't like outstanding food; comfortable chairs. . (they have arms) and a lovely quiet atmosphere! There is also a lovely fire going in winter which adds to the ambience.
The Sunday delicious karoo lamb on a spit buffet lunch is also a must but booking is essential.
There is a soup starter followed by salads then the main course. This can then be followed by puddings and cheese.
Craig Higson-Smith
This small quiet restaurant offers a simple but fine menu in an understated setting. At our table we enjoyed the prawn and pickled herring starters and the sole or kingklip prepared in different ways. The food was excellent and the service efficient and friendly. A little too friendly since at one point one of the waiters jokingly asked for a glass of wine... The prices are pretty steep which I don't really mind for the quality of food, but then please, oh please, train your staff properly and don't wheel the kitchen supplies through the dining room in the middle of a lunch service. I don't think I'll be going back!
