Review Ghazal's - Sandton

Was a lovely treat ! The staff made sure we were nice and warm close to the fireplace . The chicken salad starter was great . Portions were huge , my friend and I both had take away that fed us for the entire next day haha … Peshwari naan was just a garlic naan though . With a tiny bit of nuts on it ,

Probably the best curry I've ever had. Great flavours, portions generous, service excellent and great value for money. A definite one to visiting you are nearby.

I'm not a fan of Indian food, but this is the best Indian food that I've had. They have a variety on their menu (including veg options) and most dishes can be made to your preference. Ps. When you ask for non spicy for the kids, milder than mild... It will still be too spicy for kids, so order more naans!! My family and I will be visiting many more times in the near future. Thank you!

Great job all around. Special call out to Mickey, the host and Lakhwinder Sidhu, the chef.

The veg iptions were enough, and everything tasted divine... Sat outside and enjoyed the music in background and at a volume that we could talk and hear each at the table... the restrooms were also clean. The staff all friendly Thank you Ghazal see you soon

Ghazals Melrose Arch We had a wonderful meal at Ghazals. Authentic Indian fare at its best. Do try the prawn vindaloo … the serving of prawns in the dish was generous. Also the lamb biryani … loads of tender lamb in the flavourful biryani. The place was tastefully decorated …. Melrose Arch, after all. The menu was vast with a good choice for meat lovers or vegetarians and vegans. Service was excellent.

The food and service were both excellent. We ordered samosas, paneer tikka and onion bhajias as starters and they all were very nicely cooked and delicious. For the main course, we had Chhole Masala and Paneer Masala with garlic naan and it was made spicy as requested. The Naans were nice and soft and we loved the overall ambiance and service. Even Chef Siddhu was kind enough to pay a visit to make sure everything was okay.

Loved the food. Went for Monday night dinner with a customer and the service and food were great. It was pretty empty but as I say it was a Monday night.
Samuel Akinin
Food was excellent, the service was great and quick. Restaurant was relatively empty, probably because of random (late) hour in the middle of the week. Naan was a bit on the sweet side which was a bit different and unexpected but nice. Great atmosphere and well located.

Awesome location. The curries are divine and the service is top-notch. We really enjoyed the afternoon dine-out

We ordered the chicken korma and it came with rice along with a garlic naan. The food was well wrapped and surprisingly didn't spill. It was still warm when it arrived. It looked as though it wasn't much but turned out to be a ton of food. It was super creamy and decadent! I'd definitely order again. The only issue was that the chicken was tough

First time at Ghazal in Melrose. Came here for a catch-up dinner with some old friends. The restaurant itself is ok, with plenty of seating options.

I was meat-free for the week, and was curious to see what vegetarian options were on offer. I had a starter portion of vegetable samoosas which where ok - nothing earth shattering. I ordered a dhal makhni (lentil dish) with a side of garlic naan. I was pleasantly surprised at the presentation and the flavour. It was delicious. The portion size also took me by surprise - very generous and I would say very reasonably priced. The highlight for me was the garlic naan bread. Be warned though - the dish does come with a serving of basmati rice (which I wasn't ready for) so just check with the waiter.

My friends had the lamb Rogan Josh and chicken curry, and judging from their response, they loved every single bit of it.

Food 4/5
Service 3.8/5
Overall 3.6/5

We always eat here and it is normally great-they half all our portion sizes today, it didn’t even cover and handful of rice as you can see on the plate and that is the full portion

We often come to Ghazal as their food is really wonderful. Very tasty and flavourful, and above all it is consistently good.
However, management (like their store on Sunninghill before it closed) seem to be neglecting the primary reason people dine - it's a complete experience. Great food is nothing without great service. Unfortunately they are falling really short here. Like Sunninghill, they have staff who are completely disinterested, and after waiting 30 minutes to be asked if we would like to order, we had to ask.
Food arrived quickly and it was to its usual high standard. But again, once we were done with our main course, we waited again... and waited.... another 30 minutes - this after we had already complained to the manager!
As I speak, it is 30 minutes and no one is asking if we would like dessert, coffee or anything similar.
We may come here again, but probably not... we enjoy a dining experience and this just does not do it

Outstanding curry (Korma and Makhnie Chicken) - perfect lunch on our first ‘chilly’ day! Good venue (well situated, easy access), great value👍🏻
Candice
Delicious chicken makhnie and dhal makhnie at Ghazal. The chicken makhnie has a slightly sweet taste to it and the dhal makhnie was very smooth, creamy and filling. We paired our mains with butter naan and naan topped with crushed cashews and coconut 😋

Food tastes great, brilliant spot for a romantic dinners. Not good spot for large groups service was slow (however in their defense you could see our waiter really did try to provide top service),

we ordered 2 starters that never arrived the mains where tasted fantastic. The wine we wanted was out of stock, and my menu was missing a page and waited well over 15 mins for our post dinner coffees.

Usually given this I would give a lower rating, except the food is really good and the tables around with the couples seemed to be very well catered to, so don’t think our experience was a normal reflection of the restaurant.
Furkhan
Ordered food couple of times while staying in Marriott in melrose arch and speed of delivery is awesome. Food sent was fresh, warm and tasted good although biryani wasn’t the traditional style. I believe restaurant should publicize Halal options more explicitly.

"Spice of Life" are the words Ghazal is known by and this is an apt description of what to expect when visiting their Melrose Arch store. In India, dining is always an occasion and family and food go hand in hand. This made Ghazal a great choice to celebrate my dad’s 65th dinner. He and I don’t get much time to spend together so this was the perfect opportunity for some father and son time.

On a rather dull and chilly Joburg night, entering this beautiful restaurant and being warmly welcomed by our waiter Masai was a great way to start the evening.

Seated at a table near the fire, we perused the menu and decided on a mixed platter for starters so we could sample a bit of everything on offer. Onion Badjia, Pakoda, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Risme Kebab, Shish Kebab and of course a Lamb Samoosa for good measure. A mini feast of flavours complemented by a delicious bottle of Chocolate Block red wine.

I must say I was in a very happy place and the evening had just started. Being lamb fans and with Masai's expert recommendation, we opted for the Lamb Rogan Josh and the Lamb Korma with a side of butter and garlic Naan.

Both dishes were so tasty we couldn't resist having a taste of each other's. Feeling more than satisfied with our delicious meal, we sipped a bit more wine and decided that a birthday celebration is never complete without dessert. Dad decided that the Chocolate Volcano was a must and it was true indulgence. A rich chocolate centered cake that was so very decadent. A great end to leave us feeling warm and fulfilled in every way.

It's clear to see the passion and heart in every moment of dining at Ghazal. Thank you for such a memorable experience. We'll definitely be back!

For more follow dazz1210 on Twitter and Instagram and visit www.morethanfoodmag.com

#JoziFoodie #ThisFoodieLife #MoreThanFoodMag #RealPeopleRealTalk

Ghazal definitely has the best curry in Johannesburg! We went last night and the service was very good and curries delicious! We shared the chicken jal frezi and lamb vindaloo with rice and butter naan!! The restaurant itself is nice and cosy and the decor is tasteful! Perfect dinner for a cold winters night!
Natasha Haasbroek
Horrific!!!!
None of our food was cooked, everything was pre cooked and warmed up when we ordered it!
The curry sauce was hot but the chicken and fish was cold in the curry!
Never coming back

Served justice to their menus, meantime food quality could have been better. The rice was dry and hard, meantime the gravy where ok. Also the Pinacolada was the worst I had till date. Lacha paratha was amazing.

I was recently invited to dine at Ghazal. Ghazal is a restaurant located in Melrose Arch serving North Indian cuisine. I’m a fan of Indian food so I was really looking forward to visiting. We arrived on Ghazal on a Saturday night. The restaurant has a sophisticated and elegant feel to it, definitely a much more upmarket restaurant when it comes to Indian food in South Africa. We were seated at a table adjacent to a gorgeous glass wine display and what a great wine selection Ghazal has. I started with a glass of Beyerskloof Pinotage – the perfect way to warm up on a cool autumn evening. This was followed by the mixed platter starter comprising onion pakoda, chicken tikka and a lamb samoosa. The chicken was perfectly cooked, still tender and juicy. Loved the flavours and spices of the lamb samoosa. For my main meal, I had the

Had a great evening. The restaurant itself is clean and cosy with the fire. The staff are super welcoming and friendly. The meals were delicious and presented beautifully. Overall a good experience

The newly renovated restaurant has pretty decor quite different to the empty uninspired space you usually find at Indian restaurants.

I visited for dinner on a Thursday night and the restaurant had no real ambience because it was maybe only 20% full.

The only positives were the Bombay crush I had which was nice.

Despite the restaurant being quiet our food took a long time to arrive.

My friend ordered a paneer dish which was inedible, it had a strange taste to it and we had to send it back. I've never had paneer messed up at a restaurant before.

After that terrible food she was apprehensive about ordering something else, the waiters and managers were forcing her to try the paneer again even though she said multiple times she didn't want to. She decided on the chickpea masala - one bite was all we had because it was extremely sour. The manager also then arrived with a paneer dish which we didn't want.

I tried the prawns tikka masala which had few prawns and an average sauce.

The garlic naan was dry and burnt.

Overall 3/4 dishes were inedible. The service was intrusive and the cost of the food didn't match the quality received. It was the most expensive meal I ate that week and the most unsatisfying.

My friend and I won't be back.

The ambience and decor was s brilliant and matched with excellent service. Unfortunately the food left much to be desired as the prawns were underdone and the Kingclip was sadly not the freshest fish.

Ghazal on Peter Place is one of the restaurants I have been to many times, one that we almost take for granted because it’s always there, the food is always good and the experience is always good.We often order take aways, and tonight was the same, except that once we arrived home and started our meal,we realized something wasn’t quite right with the order. We called Ghazal to inform them of the issue and happily resolved our problem.Ghazal Bryanston does not do deliveries, nor are they on Uber Eats or Mr Delivery, notwithstanding that, their manager Stanley was willing to drive to our place and to deliver the replacement meal. These actions and attitude with which the manage handled the situation is truly exemplary.I am particularly grateful as I am pregnant and we were not inconvenienced in any manner.Thank you thank you, thank you!!We will happily continue to support your restaurant.

I have been a return client of Ghazal for over 10 years, frequenting Sunnighill and Peter Pl branch. We were very excited when Melrose opened as it would be a good addition to the area. In my opinion, no one could beat the food at Ghazal. I took my family who joined from London and Cape Town respectively to Melrose arch branch on Monday 5 Feb 2018. We were greeted by an empty restaurant, thought nothing of it , as mondays are generally very quiet restaurant days. Sat down, all 6 of us. Waiter was new, but joined from Sunninghill. Manager wofting around, like he owned the place. ordered drinks and looked at menu. The menu had changed, obviously prices had gone up a tad, which is understandable. I asked for the full Tandoori Chicken, as i see it was removed off their menu. The waiter said they dont offer it - (their website still had it, with price and everything) he went to talk to arrogant manager, who came to us and said he could do it at R190.00, we objected and then it was R179.00 or the actual website price if we only took it as a take away!. anyway knowing it is highway robbery, i got the half chicken at R90.00 which was in my opinion reasonable. rest of family had Korma, Briyani, and Vegetarian, and the Londoner had the half chicken like me. Food took 25 minutes to come, i had my chicken, the Londoner called waiter and explained her chicken was as hard as bricks and did not want it. Immediately he took the dish and comes running to the table, mr "manager" asking if she would like a "sauce" with it or for him to put it in a take away - she responded 3 times to him , that she does not want it and he can remove it off the bill where he hesitated, turned his back and walked away...1 minute later he came back and questioned her if she knew what Tandoori chicken was and is? - THIS IS DISGUSTING AND DEROGATORY! I put a call in to peter place a 2 days ago, Wednesday and spoke to the manager there, who i told the story to, he was shocked , i asked for the owner to call me , which he assured me he would. Eventually i got a call that evening from TJ, main manager of Melrose who seemed concerned by what i was telling him, he assured me the owener would call me back with feedback around the pricing , which in a matter of fact was incorrect and was way more expensive that what it should have been. To this day, no phone call from owner, and that is the very reason i am writing this. Good Bye Ghazal, it has been a good run for the last 10 yrs, but you only as good as your last meal and service given!

When you walk into Ghazal, the first thing you hear is the soft tranquil classic music playing. Non disruptive of conversation, it sets the tone for fine dinning with class. Sit down and you notice how welcoming the place is with its friendly staff. An array of exotic wines and liquor capture your attention leaving your throat mildly dry. Ordering a starter never seemed easier as a mixture of light snacks is brought to your table. To sum it up the food is excellent and so is the atmosphere. All round a great experience!
Beena Nannan
Food was bland and every dish tasted the same. Drinks seemed diluted with water and spirited - Shocking! Only good thing was the naan and the very understanding waiter who seemed like he was used to complaints about the food and alcohol!
Shahil
The food is amazing. Definitely recommend the paneer makhnie hot and garlic/butter naan, it's the best I've ever had! The ambience and decor is nice and the service is great!

This place is so great. We went here for my mothers birthday lunch and they were very friendly and accommodating. The service was great they even let us order from ocean basket for my 3 year old cousin because she wanted salmon. The food was amazing and the decor is very beautiful will definitely be returning
Ilyaas A. Mayet
Every dish tasted exactly the same. There was no distinction between flavors-from the palak paneer to the chicken makhni. The 'medium' heat option didn't even have one hit of chili. However, the friendliness of the waiter made up for the lack of tastiness of the food

I have visited this branch a few times since they have been open in this short time and I must note that the quality of their food and service is very impressive. The ambiance of this restaurant is very different and quite posh compared to their other branches.

This restaurant is well situated in Melrose arch and the seating arrangement is very comfortable and well spaced. You can most certainly enjoy a meal here for a business meeting or with family, friends or a special someone in your life.

There is of course a very good variety of vegetarian items on their menu from starters to desserts. Their paneer korma, maknie (tomato based), and palak (spinach based) are the hero dishes (mild/medium spiced or hot if you can handle it) accompanied with a naan of your choice. The portion sizes are good and their quality is consistent.

This is one of the better North Indian restaurants in town.

Don't forget to end off your meal with a nice cup of masala tea.
The Great Diner
Love this addition to the Melrose hub. Had the chicken tandoori to start. Then onto a selection of curries to feed my spice craving. From the paneer, to the lamb and chicken tikka, everything was amazing. Lovely decor and very comfy chairs. I've been to many a place where the chairs are terribly uncomfortable. Soft fluffy naans to accompany the curries, and the best chilli paste condiment on the side.

On my first visit to Ghazal Melrose Arch, I only sampled only their vast starters platter, but vowed to return and recently that is exactly what I did!

Food (and what a feast it was):
Starters:
Paneer Tikka,
Chilli Chicken,
Chicken Tikka,
Chicken Rishme Kebab,
Spinach Pakodas,
Potato Pakodas,
Vegetable Samoosas
Vegetarian Spring Rolls,
Samoosa Chat,
Fish Tikka,
and Chicken Samoosas.

Mains:
Lamb Rogan Josh,
Chicken Tikka Masala,
Chicken Kadai,
Paneer Masala,
Vegetable Biryani,
and Fish Curry.

Dessert:
Carrot pudding and ice cream.

Ghazal sets itself apart in the Indian cuisine by emphasizing their "Spice is Life" motto. This incorporates the use of delicious spices from North India such as cumin, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, tumeric, aniseed and black and white pepper which makes for a winning combination. Everything was freshly prepared and beautifully plated, but for my my two favourite dishes of the evening: Lamb Rogan Josh and Paneer Masala. Pair these rich, spicy dishes with piping hot garlic naan and you have a feast before you!

Service:
Fantastic! Really friendly, attentive and quick.

Interiors:
Beautiful! This location is hard to beat and the romantic, candlelit tables (complete with palm trees outside covered in fairy lights) made me wish that I was not there alone. This really is a great date night spot.

*Recommendation: There is a good reason that Ghazal was voted Best North Indian Restaurant in Johannesburg from 2010 - 2016! If it is North Indian cuisine that you are after, Ghazal Melrose Arch is a good option.

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

They have the best butter naan ever but don't order it as takeaway as it loses its appeal once cold and not packaged properly. The paneer makhani, hot, is always delicious. The soji needed some work.

Went with a party of 10. Meals were of an excellent standard. Attentive staff and good ambiance is what sets this Restuarant apart for most other North Indian restaurants.
Unfortunately there was no baby chairs for our little.
Abdusamad Sidar
Wonderful north Indian food selection. Good portions served with rice. Grills are flavour some. Lassi was good and service was brilliant.

Need to try breyani next!
Kelsy Moodley
The starters are really good and we had a platter so we tried a few. But the mains were disappointing- both the chicken and lamb breyani was under spiced. As for the curries, the only one I actually enjoyed was the chicken madras. Nice location and beautiful decor.
Sheetal300
We got a takeaway dinner from Ghazal this Friday... the food was at best average. We ordered a paneer tikka for starters... it was bland (not marinated at all), the paneer was hard and full of red food colouring. For mains, we ordered a paneer makhnie and a dal makhnie with butter naan. The paneer makhnie again was full of red food colouring.
Don't think we will be ordering from here anytime soon.
Chris
Great food and excellent service. Great setting - sat outside under the big palm trees. Same as the Bryanston branch, manager and staff very friendly.
Always a pleasure.

Ghazal has always been a favourite of ours. We used to frequently visit the one in Peter Place. This time, we decided to try out the new one in Melrose Arch.

The restaurant is beautiful and offers both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a couple of booths. It is definitely one level up from the other two restaurants. The soft lighting creates a cosy and intimate dining experience. The decor and furniture are neutral and really stunning.

For starters, we wanted the lamb sheesh kebabs but they didn't have any avaliable so we just decided to order the tikka chicken kebabs. The chicken kebabs were nice and tender but we ordered hot and boy was it HOT! When it came to ordering our main meals, we were a little cautious after the very spicy first round, so we decided to order all the mains in medium flavour. When the main meals arrived, they weren't spicy at all and left us feeling like we should have ordered hot.

We ordered a couple of dishes to share - butter chicken, paneer makhnie, lamb kadai and a chicken biryani. The butter chicken did not disappoint and was as good as usual. I really enjoyed the lamb kadai - the gravy was tasty and the meat was tender. I found that the paneer was a little too sweet for my liking. The biryani was a complete let down. It had absolutely no flavour and was not worth ordering. Their garlic naans are something for the books - definitely the best naan I've had at any Indian restaurant in Joburg. They were soft and delicious and I probably could have made a meal out of that on it's own.

All in all, it was a great night with good service, delicious food and a lovely atmosphere. Ghazal is definitely an improvment on the previous Indian restaurant that used to be in this spot.
Solid 4!!! Ghazal's ambiance screams Indian opulance with beautiful jewel tone cushions and chairs and complementary gold accents. The staff are pleasant and welcoming even if you're in dirty sneakers. We had the lamb vindaloo in hot. It was flavourful and fragrant. It was truly the first time i enjoyed North Indian cuisine. Will be back!!!

I have been here 2 times and both the time it was disappointing .. Veg food was not at all upto the mark..although its a good place for non veg..

Second time the service was horrible as the wait after placing the order was 20-30 minutes on non busy day.. after enquiry waiter said she forgot to place it:( which delayed it further by 20 minutes..

the rating of 2.5 is for their non veg food and ambiance.. otherwise they were not at all up to the standards of the name..
Eveshnee Naidoo
First time here and the food was really good, but didn't like the fact that there was a mouse roaming around the restaurant quite freely.
Doesn't make me comfortable about what's going on in the kitchen...
The staff didn't seem quite bothered the creature either.
Leigh Johannes
Delicious delicious delicious!!! The best Indian vegetarian food I've ever had in a restaurant. Definitely a place to try. Will be back soon. :-)

Went to Ghazal because there was such a hype to go there and heard many great reviews, however it was nothing more than par for an Indian restaurant. The atmosphere is more lively in an exam hall, and then having to listen to the beating of the drums from Moyo was a headache to eat to, although the restaurant is not at fault for that. We ordered a Chicken Vindaloo and one other chicken dish and were warned the hot was very hot so we went with mild, which was virtually spiceless in our opinions. Flavour was nice but nothing awe inspiring. The naan bread however is some of the best around and can recommend that and tbe pecan nut pie dessert is also nothing to write home about. The staff and service was great, ir must be said. Might be worth trying the bot dish next time

Decided to go back to one of our favourite past time restaurants, Ghazal at Melrose Arch. The restaurant is very spacious with options to sit inside (at tables or the booths) or outside, the decor is minimalistic and suites the place well. For starters we ordered 2 portions of hot tikka chicken kebabs, which were extremely hot for our taste buds, but still soft and delicious. Sadly, we were disappointed that they didn’t have any lamb sheesh kebabs available. On to mains, where we ordered some butter chicken, chicken biryani, paneer maknie, and lamb kadai to share, all mild after the hot experience from earlier. The butter chicken was delicious as we remembered it, and a little lemon heightens the flavours. The chicken biryani on the other hand had very little to no flavour to it. The paneer maknie was nice, but a little too sweet. The lamb kadai, was delicious and the lamb itself was soft and succulent. The one disappointment on the mains was the choice of mild, which we thought would have been perfect given the excessively hot starters.
Binita Mistry
My family and I love Ghazal and we used to visit the Ghazal at Peter Place often. This time we decided to visit the Melrose Arch restaurant. I must say that the decor is beautiful and elegant compared to the other 2 branches and the lighting is much better. The food was a slight let down. We wanted to order some lamb shish kebabs for starters but they didn't have any so we settled for the chicken tikka. The chicken was 'melt in your mouth' delicious and mind blowing hot. It was so hot that we had to have some naan to snack on to cool the taste buds. We ordered butter chicken, paneer makhnie, lamb kadai and chicken biryani. Knowing that the starters were so hot we ordered medium flavour for all dishes. When we tasted the mains it was not hot at all and we regretted ordering medium instead of hot. The butter chicken was tasty, but the paneer makhnie was overly sweet. The chicken biryani was bland and a complete let down compared to their other branches. Will have to give them another try.
Roueshka
Never fails! A posh version in comparison to the other 2 popular branches with elegant chairs that enhances the setting. Service was really good and attentive. Unfortunately they were out of shish kebab, however we tried the lamb makhanie that hit the spot however the Butter chicken was my all time favourite! Definitely going back!

I seldom give a 5 star but this particular branch of Ghazal is not like the others. I had a lamb Vindaloo that is my go-to taste test for spice. The good was hot, as to be expected but massively flavorful. The waiter always had a cold beer on ice near the table and was attentive without being intrusive. The usually crowded Melrose arch positioning has actually found a way to feel spacious and open.

The Kashmiri naan was the best I had tasted and was filled with roasted fruity and nutty flavor.

If you want Indian that tastes like you are somewhere in Mumbai's finest, eat here. Authentic. Delicious.
Tshidi
Ghazal all day everyday. Had the lamb curry mild, asked for the chili paste because it wasn't as hot as I'd imagined. The garlic naan bread was amazing I could've easily had it by itself. The food here is amazing👌🏾

Great atmosphere with delicious food and brilliant service. Highly recommended for families or just with friends.
Definitely be back soon!

I've actually never had a bad meal at an Indian restaurant in Johannesburg. Lucky me. Ghazal is no exception. It's not the most beautiful place I've ever seen and the atmosphere bland to say the least but my tandoori chicken was deliciously tender; the paneer palak great and the naan nice. Members of our party complained though - one that there were no bones in his lamb dish: and the other that there was sugar in his; his lamb vindaloo being too sweet. Portions are quite big so you can take a doggy bag home for breakfast. Service was attentive with the waiter hovering in the background most of the time. The wine selection is decent and decently priced too. And they didn't charge corkage.

Tucked away in a corner next to Ocean Basket and opposite the Meat Co, lies the gem of Ghazal. Less busy than its sibling restaurants but equally delivers on service and good food.

We ordered a Lamb Roganjosh and Paneer Palak (paneer cheese blocks cooked in a creamy spinach gravy) with garlic naans on the side. The lamb was tender and flavoursome and I found my palak panner absolutely delicious. A good curry is one that has depth of flavour and I must say, Ghazal delivered. The naan bread deserves special mention as it was made to perfection - perhaps the best naan I've ever had.

Service was impeccable as always.

Awesome Indian food ! Chicken tikka Masala with butter Naan bread was really great ! The service from Charity was perfect and the ambiance sitting outside under the trees really makes you feel at home ! Definitely my favorite Indian food spot in JHB.
Prasantha Bisetty
I actually didnt know there was a ghazal here until a friend suggested we eat there after a meeting. I love how the decor here is so fresh and modern yet you still get that indian feel.
For starters we had the paneer tikka masala.... it was good but a bit to red for my liking (I am assuming they use some sort of coloring to give it that color). For mains we had a variety of veg dishes , potato, cauliflower, garlic naan. Everything was delicious. Also ordered a take away lamb korma and garlic naan for the fiance who is a die hard fan of the sunninghill branch... he throughly enjoyed it and has proclaimed it the second best korma in johannesburg !!
Nikita
I finally succumbed to my naan bread craving this weekend. Thankfully , it was everything I'd hoped for- perfectly light and chewy. The food was good, although there was nothing particularly exciting on the menu. Same old, same old ... unfortunately. I will admit however, that everything was tasty and well presented. The service was great, and the wine list extensive.
I'm still not sure what to think of this place. The outside seating is lovely, perfect on a summer's day.
I will go back for the setting , and the naan.
Mithum Singh
First Ghazal experience, which was really good and is highly recommended. The atmosphere and ambiance is really complimentary to the authentic rich Indian food. The service was outstanding from the time we walked in to the time we exited the restaurant. We had 4 dishes, which was excellent. The only draw back was the Malai chicken, which was slightly dry. I will be back in the coming months!!!

Delicious curries and fantastic service! Beautiful setting too! The booths are amazing and so comfortable. The place is so tucked away so glad I found it had opened in Melrose on Zomato.

We visited the new Ghazal's restaurant in Melrose Arch and were keen to see how this outlet compared to its established outlets. Although it's slightly hidden on the Melrose Square, the Ghazals sign is visible for anyone looking out for the restaurant. We sat outside to take advantage of the warm spring evening. The outlet's Internet is a little posher than I remember from the other outlets. Throughout our evening at Ghazals, we really enjoyed and appreciated the warm and friendly service of our waitress - a nice change from the common cold and poor service that plages many of SA's restaurants. We had a chicken korma and chicken madras curry both of which were delicious. We'll definitely be back to try out the other mouth watering dishes on the menu

The two things that stand out most for me at this newly opened branch are... the service and the comfort of the booth tables :D Pillows and more pillows! 👏 The service was on top form! The food is also really good. I had a vegetarian dish, the Aloo Gobi Matar, which I really enjoyed - it is basically cauliflower, potatoes and pees in a flavorsome gravy. The lamb samoosas, which I also tasted, were very enjoyable and scrumptious (and a decent portion size). Happy to have another quality Indian restaurant to choose from :)

Very tasty! Presentation of dishes are beautiful.
A bit more formal than the usual restaurant in Melrose Arch.
Superb service!
Classic Indian cuisine

I had a very pleasant dinner here. It's a very classy setting...very subtlety Indian...and nice colors used. I had a hot lamb curry with rice...very nicely flavored, not too hot, and quite a large portion. I had the gulab jamun for dessert which was mediocre. I will go back for the curry tho.

Beautiful setting, especially the adorned trees outside. Impeccable service and lives up to the standard of its well-loved and established predecessor in Bryanston. Very happy that we finally have one closer to home!

We are huge fans of the Ghazal's franchise and so when we heard that it had opened in melrose arch, we knew we had to try it!

The decor is exquisite compared to the other branches and it brings an ambiance of fine dining. The service was great. We had a very attentive waitress. Finally, the food was as delicious as the other branches. I highly recommend the butter chicken with butter naan bread! My husband is a big fan of the briyani and the chicken tikka masala. What I really like about Ghazal's that no other Indian restaurant has been able to match, is that when you ask for no spice, the food you get is just that, not spicey. It's always a battle at other restaurants as they prepare the sauces as mild, medium or hot so even if you ask for no spice, it still comes spicey but Ghazal's will cater to your exact preference.

We left with full stomachs and happy hearts with such a pleasant experience!

Just had lunch here and it was superb. Had the mixed starter for 1 and it had a little bit of everything. Awesome way to try multiple dishes 😀
Then the tandoori chicken for main and it just fell off the bone. Yum!!!
Plus it has an awesome outside section. Perfect way to absorb the winter sun.
I definitely recommend u try this restaurant.

Took my team out for dinner tonite and we were a table of 5. Given that this resturant is newly opened it was relatively quite. The decor is very indian/Arabic which was very pleasant. Service was spot on and attentive. The food was a bit of a let down and we found it not on the standard of comparable resturants. The prices were also on the high side and not in line with the quality provided. We decided to go back to our usual haunts.

Love the interior - very well decorated with comfy chairs, lillies and candles. Good wine list and selection of local and international beers. My husband and I had the chicken tikka masala, lamb dahl gosht, bombay potatoes and some naan bread and everything was delicious. Would definitely give this place another visit, could find nothing to fault.

Enjoyable family dinner but not blown away.

We started on (barely hot enough) tomato soup which I could have poured from a Woolies can with a few random drops of cream, only not as thick and creamy as you would hope - which is strange as it took them a really long time to prepare.

The main course of vindaloo and various breyanis and curries did not disappoint although presentation was a bit lacking and the naan bread was delicious but strangely lacking authenticity.

The store was beautifully appointed and tastefully decorated but there was absolutely zero ambience.

The service was fidgety and arrogant at best and as I now lay in bed with a seriously upset stomach I cannot help but think I would have to be very hard pressed to return to pay two grand again for seven diners with a side order of cramps.

.....

So after my last scathing review I was challenged to reluctantly revisit with a different group of friends.

What a completely different experience, the atmosphere was lovely and service was attentive and professional.

The girls all had the butter chicken and the lads enjoyed lamb vindaloo, rogan josh and breyani sides with a few garlic, coconut and butter naans.

Food was spectacular and the drinks were flowing freely so all round a top evening.

Considering how much fun we had, R3k for seven people seemed reasonable.

Not a meal I could have regularly but for fun occasions I would definitely recommend it if you want to splash a bit.

Rating upgraded from 2.0 to 3.5.

.....

So here is commentary on my third visit to Ghazals...

Felt like a hearty Indian meal so 3 of us went off to Ghazals for a quick supper...

Unlike the previous two visits, this one was slightly more enjoyable and I can't quite put my finger on it but it's as if everything was just so much better.

We had a vegetable breyani, a lamb breyani which were both excellent and fantastic portions. Could easily be shared with a few smaller dishes. A chicken curry was also perfectly cooked and the naan was special.

If they could continually improve as the have over the past 6 months I will definitely become more of a regular but it still lacks in authenticity compared to Thava in Norwood.

Rating upgrade to 4

Amazing service and beautiful food! You won't go wrong at the Ghazal in Melrose arch. Paneer maknie is incredible! The owner was so lovely and friendly. It was a treat

A lovely evening at a great new restaurant. Starting with impeccable service from our ordering drinks to getting our food in the perfect time frame. Then the food itself; delicious well balanced and with layers of flavor. I tasted both Lamb Curries which were so delicious I could not have asked for more. The lamb was tender and soft, breaking apart on the fork and the sauce rich and full of deliciousness. This truly deserves 5 stars and I am thinking of going back tonight again.

The new Ghazal is tucked away in the corner past Ocean Basket. They have lovely outside and inside seating areas, and a wine wall that got me excited. The service was good, wine list extensive although they didn't have our first option available.

We started with a starter platter which includes various bite sized starters. The chicken was cooked incredibly tender, the pakora was a hit but the samosa fell a bit short. For mains we had paneer tikka, paneer makhni and chicken madras. The two paneer dishes were divine, while the chicken madras was average. The rice served on each plate was dry and not enjoyable, but the rice brought separately was light and fluffy. Not sure why there was such a huge difference. For dessert we had the malva pudding which was okay.

Overall, this new Ghazal is lovely. The interior is exceptional. Highlights included the starter chicken, the paneer makhni and the paneer tikka. I was disappointed by the lack of Indian desserts available. Would love to head back to try some more of their vegetarian dishes.

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Johannesburg!
Being a regular at the Ghazal's in Peter Place and Rivonia, I have to commend them on the consistency of the food!

The latest addition here at Melrose Arch is without a doubt one of the classiest Indian dining experiences..the contemporary decor coupled with the warmth and friendliness of the staff and management team is excellent!

What I really appreciated was the effort by the maitre d' to enhance my dining experience by offering a complimentary makhni(butter) sauce to accompany my tandoori prawns!

Wouldn't eat at any other Indian restaurants, and if I do, the bar has been set very high!

Classy, contemporary & with a human touch, the food here makes your soul happy!!!
Being a regular at the Ghazal in Peter Place and Rivonia, the Melrose Arch restaurant had a lot to live up to. I have to say that this is by far the best of the bunch.

From exquisite decor and immaculate cuisine presentation to an owner so involved that he quietly swooshes through to take your coat. This place hits the top of my list of Indian restaurants in JHB. The most evident reason for this is the fact that the old Ghazal restaurants have amazing food, the one in Melrose Arch however brings it all together with a modern-indian, fine dining experience without forgetting that signature Ghazal flavour.

Definitely try this place of you want a great dining experience.

cc.
