Review Chaplin's Grill - Sandton

Sharon du Toit
Most moist and tasteful hamburger patty ever. We were asked how well done or rare we wanted the patty. Perfection on a plate. The cheese sauce was amazing. Found this place hidden away after taking a wrong turn which turned out great.

Fantastic wine pairing menu. Really great steak that was well prepared. The atmospere was lovely and the service really good. The only area of improvement might possibly have been on the pastry that was quite tough. Over the course if the evening the staff checked in quite a few times to make sure everything was going well. We did find the babground to the wine extremely interested. We were provided with a full explanation of each wine, where it came from and what made it unique. Truly wonderful evening.

Very nice venue with a cosy atmosphere. They seem to be able accommodate a lot of visitors without feeling cramped - although on the night we went it was quiet which was nice. They played jazzy remixes of modern songs for the background music but still maintained a buzzy vibe. The food was excellent and the wine selection was more than adequate - followed by well brewed Irish coffee. The owner is very friendly and passionate about his business and staff are very friendly knowledgeable about the food and menu.

Really good steak at this restaraunt, have been a few time. Has a romantic feel to it, very nice ambience. I love a good steak, and ofcourse it is made according to your preference. I loved that the steak is aged and if you order it right, it's nice and tender and succulent. I always pair with the creamy mash they have on the menu. Would definitely dine here again.

What a fantastic restaurant with a wonderful relaxed vibe. Food was delicious and the service was good.

We needed somewhere special to celebrate a special anniversary. Chaplin's Grill definitely delivered. The starters were interesting and full of flavour. The steak special was cooked to perfection, it has been a while since I've had such a good steak. The dessert was amazing. The service was good and the owner popped past as well. The wine list was extensive and catered to all tastes. We will be back.

This is ABSOLUTELY SUPERB! Myself and my fiancee thoroughly enjoyed the service afforded to us throughout the evening by our waiter Kenny as well as other staff members too! What a great find! Our sirloin steaks where cooked to perfection on recommendation. We can't wait to come back.

Great food, great variety of wine, all very fair pricing We highly recommend their x large Lüderitz oysters, very tasty and really large, was really a treat. Definitely the best Oysters I have ever tasted. 👍🥂 🥂

The steak house might not look like much from the outside , the food truly delivers and I think the price is backed by the quality of the steaks. The staff is generally very friendly and helpful , I would call this a hidden gem in the Joburg steak house scenes , don't let the outside fool you. Definitely worth a try.

Went for Father's day lunch and were not disappointed. Food was great and service from Nigel our waiter was awesome. I loved that old style home-made bread they serve as appetizer - absolutely enjoyed it. My steak Diane was made to perfection, served with vegetables. the chocolate fondant was dark, decadent and rich, served with vanilla ice cream. Unassuming place, well worth our Sunday afternoon.

What a gem of a place. They make sure you have the best dining experience. The Ribeye is a must.

I highly recommend Chaplin's Grill. I needed a booking for 20 of my staff on Valentines Day - and Rainold from Chaplin's Grill was really exceptional in assisting me and my team to be there for a dinner. They went out of their way to create and design a set menu for me, the allocation and layout of our dinner area was fantastic, and the food on the evening was a hit with my staff, their meat dishes are more than worth it. Definitely a place to return to with family and friends. Thank you Chaplin's Grill and Rainold for making me evening so special.

Lemme start by saying we found this place by accident. Good maps reviews and pics of the food were great. When we arrived we were but apprehensive because of the tucked away location and lack of bright lighting etc. We walked up to the place and it was empty. We already started thinking about plan b. We asked for a table and all the table we requested were reserved... wait ,hold on..let give the place a chance. Inside was dimly lit.. neat deco with Charly Chaplin deco/theme. After seated we were greeted by a friendly waiter. That handed us paper photocopied menus 😀. The menu items were great.. reasonably priced. Looking closer at the deco items we noticed a bunch of wine list awards... some platinum ones. So the place has street cred. The food arrived... fantastic! The steak and fish was prepared excellently. Chaplins is of of those place that needs more fame... excellent venue.. Excellent food... don't drink wine so I can't comment about the platinum wines available 😀

Private , classy and perfect dining place . The food is top notch from the starter to desert.Though I did not take any desert after since their portions are fulfilling . Plus they have good wine 🍷.

Always ALWAYS a treat! For special celebrations or even just a great meal on your own, Chaplin’s never disappoints and we love that!

Meat cooked to perfection, excellent service and dessert was divine. I plan to make this my regular steak house.

What a divine restaurant! Tucked away where the old Vilamoura used to be...I discovered this treasure in the moment of spontaneity on Valentine's night! We received a warm welcome on a very popular 'lovers' night'. The mood is warm and hospitable...a rare find in today's over-population of over-priced restaurants. Going with a simple choice of 200g Rump with mash, and a selection of Dijon Mustard and Chives sauce...I was so pleasantly satisfied. A steak so well-balanced with a deep char-grilled flavour and enhanced with the uplifting flavours of the selected sauce...coupled with Beyerskloof Pinotage...absolutely to die for. My great company selected the oxtail dish which I had the pleasure of sampling - and I was equally pleasantly satisfied by the gorgeous flavours and richness of the dish. And then the cherry on top - a delicious cherry chocolate to end it all. Delicate dark chocolate with a liquid-filled centre and a blushing cherry in the middle. Thank you Chaplin's...for the out of this world experience.

My family had dinner tonight at Chaplins and it was awesome. I am vegan ... Our waiter, Kenneth, and the kitchen staff made sure that I did not just have a plate of chips ❤️ I had pap and tomato gravy with sautéed mushrooms and an avo salad. Everyone was happy. Thank you.

We had an excellent dinner there last night on a very special family occasion. The food was absolutely delectable and service superb. I can highly recommend it to anyone.

No matter how many times we visit Chaplains be it the two of us or with friends and family, Chaplains never disappoints. Outstanding service, warm and welcoming atmosphere, friendly waiters, great food etc What more could one ask for...

Great warm heartfelt welcome by everybody. The food is delicious. The sirlion was top class. Do yourself a favour and go try it out. Excellent.

There are no words to explain the utter disappointment in this place, we booked a reservation in February to have dinner on the 31st March only to find out that they were closed! No communication NOTHING!
Kim Lowman
They hosted our 40th birthday party last night. Service was outstanding, food was absolutely delicious as always. The venue was spectacular with our hosts ensuring a very special evening!! Highly recommended.
Tasneem Maganlal
My hubby and I won the dinner for two. It was absolutely amazing <3 the prawns were the most delicious prawns I had ever tasted. The manager is so friendly and warm. He spoke to us for a long time. The decor is absolutely beautiful.
Joanne Laas
Always a pleasure going to Chaplin’s Grill. The Tuna starter (special for the day) was outstanding. Rib-eye fabulous.
Peter van der Merwe
Best-kept secret in Johannesburg. Outstanding food for people who love their food. You won't get better meat in this city. Best wine list in Jozi's northern suburbs. Great selection of craft beers. And incredible views of the Sandton skyline.
Jessica Lindsay-Smith
Service is outstanding!! We go to Chaplins often and our favourite dish is the steak Diane! Wonderful restaurant and highly recommended!!
Cardi Ubuntu Matill
Awesome dining experience, attentive service, best ribs I have ever had! Great ambience.

On arrival, a hidden English pub was the first thing that came to mind, making my decision doubtful. I was pleasantly surprised by the setup inside. Neat, quite, spacious, friendly staff, calming atmosphere and CLEAN BATHROOMS INSIDE! <br/><br/>I would consider myself a “complainer” but when it comes to my mother - there is no word for it. All I have to say is, thank you, thank you for not letting me sit through an evening of what’s wrong and what could be fixed. Our food was absolutely astounding! <br/><br/>Only thing that could be improved on is the size of the side salad - definitely not worth the cost. <br/><br/>Other than that, it’s been about a month and my mom now responds “Chaplin’s” as if it were a cuisine <br/><br/>Needless to say, don’t judge a book by its cover. <br/><br/>They’re on the Entertainer App as well - another bonus.
Linda Magowan
Poor exterior but it does lead to a hidden gem. I was initially skeptical with orange decor and cold plastic chairs. Drinks orders were taken promptly but I was extremely disappointed to receive less than half a glass of wine! On enquiring about this I was informed that it was 178ml, carefully measured out. When I enquired about this to the manager, he cheekily said he could put it in a smaller glass and look like it's full. It wasn't cheap either, so that will be the last time for that.<br/><br/>Then the home made bread arrived which was delicious and all was forgiven, followed by a superb Fillet Diane. I did balk at the quite expensive price of steak with a sauce and chips, R230, but I have given this restaurant this rating because of its excellence. I'd rather pay more for excellent food than pay cheaper for mediocracy.<br/><br/>Service and food were both good which makes up for the lack of vibe, rude retorts and priciness. And I will be back.....

Visited the restaurant for a weekday lunch. Regardless of the fact that we were the only guests at the restaurant, the service we received was very poor. We always had to be looking for our server, the kitchen over-cooked both our steaks. One thing I did enjoy was their complementary bread, it was tasty. That’s about the only positive. Not returning.
Carole Craggs
We had a lovely family dinner at Chaplin's this evening. The service was extremely polite and attentive. The food was good - we each enjoyed our starters, with favorites being the tuna tartare and carpaccio. Then we had a selection of ribs, steak and burgers which were all great. The desserts were nice, but not out of this world. Overall we had a good time, good food and great service.
Yuvisti Ramgulam
Decided to try out Chaplin’s Grill for dinner tonight, having read good reviews online. Boy we’re we disappointed!... My partner had the Rabbit in a mild mustard sauce, served on herbed mash and I, the Queen Prawns with creamy pesto and chorizo, served on a bed of angel hair pasta. Both dishes were listed as “favorites” on the menu, so we were expecting a real treat... Our meals arrived and we soon discovered that the rabbit was dry with a sauce which tasted as if it came from a store- bought sachet; and my “Queen” prawns were actually small, overcooked morsels which were drowned in a watery and bland pesto sauce. We decided to cut our losses, eat our sad dinner and leave. We won’t be back anytime soon.
Lizanne
Food: I ordered a Fillet steak with a side of Vegetables. <br/>The steak was perfectly cut, perfectly cooked and had great flavour. <br/>The vegetables were lovely. The Butternut was firm and sweet and the spinach was creamy yet not over powering. <br/><br/>The service is excellent and the food came promptly. <br/><br/>Definitely value for money and a hidden gem of a restaurant.
Elizma Briers
We love Chaplin's Grill! The food is mind-numbingly good, the service absolutely impeccable and the atmosphere truly enjoyable. Without a doubt the best Steakhouse in Johannesburg.
Byron
Excellent steaks and very friendly waiters that work hard. The outside of the restaurant looks dead but the inside is very welcoming. I highly recommend this place.
Grant Kaplan
I went to Chaplin’s last night for the first time. We had the recommended wing rib which was rather fatty, we both had crepe suzette for dessert which was ok. When it came to paying the bill I was not allowed to use my entertainer app ( it’s a buy one get the cheaper free app) because I was limited to one special per visit and me bringing a bottle of wine was considered a special even though I paid Corkage which I was happy to do. This is ridiculous and I have not had this at other restaurants. I did not want to make a scene so just paid. Will not go back after this incident.
Samantha Jane Cliffe
As a vegetarian a steak restaurant isn’t my first choice of restaurant to go, but because I’m married to a meat eater, every now and then we need to visit one. Chaplins always has something decent on the menu for vegetarians (not the normal halloumi cheese, salad and soup). And it’s tasty!
Michael Nurick
We booked at the restaurant for a special occasion. I was delighted to find Chaplin’s after it closed its Melville doors several years ago. I had always enjoyed the restaurant so I was disappointed after learning it had closed its doors. <br/><br/>We were not disappointed. The food was excellent as was the ambiance in the restaurant. We ordered the mushroom and tomato tart and chicken livers as our starters and the steak platter for our main course. We thoroughly enjoyed the food which was presented to us. The steak was the best I have had in quite some time. <br/>My only complaint is that we were placed in the corner of the restaurant behind a hanging piece of fabric so we felt separated from the restaurant.
Zinzerella
It was difficult to get to from the main road, and the exterior is not grand by any measure so I wasn’t expecting much when we walked in. The interior design is just okay but my oh my the steak!!!! I will certainly be going back just for the steak and great service.
Mukhtar Dharsey
What a lovely little steak restaurant in Parkmore. They have Chalmar beef which is halaal and are willing to cook it separately. Big win. Nice ambience and steaks are cooked to perfection. Had beef carpaccio and fillet. Service was excellent and friendly. Highly recommend.
Jaco De Wet
Food was good. Presentation was a bit lacking, considering the price. The dessert was below average. The Crème Brulee's texture was wrong and the chocolate brownie was dry. The chocolate fondant was nice though. Wouldn't go back in a hurry...
Kimson Chan
I went there for a dinner and I might say, although the location was not the best, the setting and ambience was not bad. Service was pretty consistent throughout the evening. The starter of tuna tartare with avocado and rocket was very light and a great appetizer for my sirloin main. The sirloin itself was cooked perfectly (although there were a few gristles along the way). The dessert of creme brulee was light and felt like comfort food. The views there was amazing as we could see the Sandton skyline.
Lorna Somers
Exceptional steaks cooked to perfection time and time again. Impeccable service from all the staff and an attentive manager keeps this as one of the top Johannesburg restaurants
Melanie King
Had a fantastic dinner. Service was impeccable. Food was delicious. The steak Diane was a real treat. Fillet was magnificent. Especially with the mustard and chive sauce. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

STEAK! STEAK! STEAK! fantastic meal, fantastic vibe and good service. We went to Chaplins for the first time with some friends who are regulars. They recommended the steak combo for 2 and so I pass this recommendation onto you. They cook it to perfection. We accompanied it by the classic butternut and spinach side and string fries, topped the steak off with mushroom sauce and cranberry &port sauce. Yum! Duck spring rolls can be skipped though.
Sharima Bramannan
From the little I tasted from this place at the Eat Out SteakOut, I must visit the restaurant. They offered a delicious fillet slice with creamy mushroom sauce!
Nixie
Best steak I have had best to try the trio of meat. Best to ask the chefs opinion on how it's cooked. Amazing side dishes. Service is great. Literally the best rump ever

Thanks once again to the Entertainer app I got the opportunity to try Chaplin's Grill , situated in Randburg. I found it quite strange that a steakhouse would have cheap plastic chairs which get pretty cold in mid winter. The restaurant was not overly busy for a Saturday night , so not much can be said about the ambience , however it does boasts spectacular view ls of the Sandton skyline ! For the mains we opted for the popular steaks, and we were not disappointed. Nice and succulent fillets basted in their home spices, was a treat to the mouth. The kids equally enjoyed their generous portion of their chicken strips. Service was good and our waiter was friendly, so no qualms there. Had an issue wit redeeming my Entertainer app discount, which left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. Upon discussing with the manager he did politely agreed to honor the the discount. Another negative is that a 15 % tip is automatically added, irrespective of number of people! Whilst We did enjoy the food , the negative experience most probably mean I won't be going backin the near future, however I would still recommend the restaurant if you a meat lover.
Ravi Govender
Simple casual ambience and the waiter really didn't know much about wine (asked for what Cabernet Franc they had, he apologized and said they only had wine!) but the steak was simply spectacular! You'll pay a lot more for a piece of meat not nearly as good!
Kendall Law
Chaplin's grill is somewhat of a local legend. I'm very much a beef-eater and so this place had to be visited. I can tell you it does cow so well. Honestly I have had steak from all over and this was great quality, well aged and cooked to perfection. The accompaniments were a winner too. I had the snails starter as well as some trinchado and both were really good. I will be back. (Their wine list is very extensive and also do corkage if you can't find it on wine list)

We tried this restaurant on Thursday for the first time, and I have some mixed feelings about the place.<br/><br/>Location: Driving up and down Republic and William Nichol, I struggled to find the place. When I eventually got there, I was again walking around the place until I found its entrance next to apartment flats.<br/><br/>Ambience: Relaxed and quiet. Steak ranch. Not very busy.<br/><br/>Decor: Cheap decor and uncomfortable plastic chairs.<br/><br/>Menu: Very interesting options, and the combinations look great. It is a grill, and they do not have vegetarian options on their menu.<br/><br/>Drinks: Although they advertise various tap beers, the waiter informed me that they only have bottled beer. From my experience, that is not a good sign for restaurants.<br/><br/>Service: Waiter was okay. He had a slight attitude. I was curious to see if he will make a recommendation when I ordered a baked potato with my trinchado. He didn't. And although the restaurant was quite empty, our food took 45 minutes to arrive.<br/><br/>Food: Very tasty and portions are good. Must say we enjoyed the food.<br/><br/>Management: Manager/owner(?) came to check on us shortly after our food arrived.<br/><br/>Price: Slightly steeper than most similar places. We also got an unexpected 15% tip already included in the bill. I did not see that on their menu? Watch out for included tips on your bill.<br/><br/>Tips for restaurant: We were seated in the far left corner at the back. It is most definitely the worst table in the restaurant, as it is close to the kitchen (noisy) and too close to the bathroom: when someone enters the bathroom, you are overwhelmed by bathroom smells (yuck).
Jules
Thought my fillet was incredibly delicious! Waiter was a bit pushy with wine choices especially trying to get us to order an expensive one but our main courses were great. Dessert was rather disappointing. Creme brûlée was melted and ice cream and chocolate sauce was average
Anthony Strydom
Good value for money. Steak is well prepared. Friendly host who enjoys engaging with his customers. Definitely recommended for the relaxing dining experience.
Marcel Malherbe
First time we have frequented this establishment <br/><br/>It is a hidden gem! Not much from the outside in terms of appearance and decor. Warm welcome and service was superb. Waiter knew what was to be recommended, and its meat! <br/><br/>We all had a main course of meat .. and it was superb. From rump, kudu and oxtail, it was all superb. The owner is also on point, walking around and talking to patrons<br/><br/>Would highly recommend this establishment
Michael Galatis
A great old school spot. It's been around for many years and we found it by accident one day. The vibe was a little dull, it was a Wednesday, but the food made up for it. I had wing rib on the bone and my partner prawns. Both cooked perfectly and delicious. Service was excellent and a very enjoyable evening. Pricing was reasonable and will certainly be back when looking for a good steak.
Elena
Absolutely delicious food. We had the steak and salmon, both if which were cooked to perfection and very tasty. Starters (oysters & salad) was also tasty as was the dessert. The service was excellent- the waiter was attentive but not overly so and knew his stuff. We will definitely be back!
Serena Seunarain
Chaplin's Grill was not a place I would ordinarily choose over bull run etc but after a Sandton meeting, I decided to pop by for a casual lunch. And it is a good thing I did because here I found one of the best Ostrich fan fillet. Cooked to perfection : not overdone, tender, juicy and extremely flavourful. Would definitely be a place I would return to.
John White
Really great steaks. Really great service. Nice setting. Quiet and conversational. Snails and ribs were excellent too. Very enjoyable. We will be back for sure when the red meat hunger comes around again.
Jen Cohen
Went to Chaplin's for my birthday a few months ago. I was so happy that I'd chosen this restaurant! The food was spectacular and the service excellent! Everyone enjoyed their starters and mains, some even ordered dessert and were impressed too.<br/><br/>I will definitely be returning!
Grant & Sam
We had wanted some good Chalmar steak (which is halaal), so decided on Chaplin's Grill. The steak was good; although one was shy of the medium requested. The accompanying chips were decent. We ordered the trio of sauces to go with it to sample a selection; they were not well prepared and didn't taste great, which is a pity as they were doing so well otherwise. We'd skip the sauces in the future, and enjoy the steak as is. <br/>Looks like there's a nice view of Sandton from the window seats.
Halona Naidoo
Good steaks and wine list ... just very poor sauces made with the steak. Gloopy, thick and tasteless. It's a pity that something that small can let down a place with such great potential. In need of new chairs and decor. I truly believe their mille feuille is divine!! My best ever..
Kirsti Penprase
My boyfriend and i went to the Glenelley wine pairing dinner at Chaplins grill last night for our anniversary dinner. It was spectacular. The food pairing was perfect, each wine complemented the dish to the t. I have never been to a pariring where they have got it so right. Well done to the chef and Rainold as well as the lovely lady from Glenelley. What a lovely evening with the most gorgeous wine
Jalapeño Popper
Have to say the best steak ever... And when it comes to fillets I am super fussy. Grill house has nothing on Chaplins!!!! The best fillet and black pepper sauce. Ribs to die for, but don't order things like fish or curry at a steakhouse!!! 😉
Mik The Legend
Don't go to a steakhouse and order a chicken curry - go to a curry spot for a curry. That said, my wife had one of the best fillets I've ever had the pleasure of having one mouthful of - yes she only gave me a taste, not cool. Will go back and back and back again for my own fillet.
Richard Bower
I have been coming to Chaplins Grill since it opened and even before that when it was called the Local Grill. Hence my review may be slightly bias, however I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal here. <br/><br/>Fair enough I have never ventured away from having a steak but this is because both myself and my parents believe it to be the best steak house in Johannesburg. <br/><br/>The staff are always friendly and the restaurant is nestled in a small shopping center overlooking Sandton. <br/><br/>My standard order is a 500g T-bone steak (ask to have it rubbed), shoe string fried and a side of sautéed mushrooms. <br/><br/>My only complaint is that I can not go more often. <br/>
Heather Hook
Great venue with the most amazing view over Sandton. Fine dining hiding as local grill house. Great wine list and extensive menu, best known for their aged beef. We enjoyed a beautifully plated starter platter of calamari, beef carpaccio and duck spring rolls, followed by a bacon and avo burger with fries for me and a fillet with mash for my dining partner. I was so busy talking that I only realised my burger patty was more tartare than medium rare, about half way through my meal. Both the waiter and the manager said they would chat to the chef and get back to me, but didn't hear any feedback which was a bit disappointing, and I ended up leaving the rest of the patty, the chips were delicious however. I really liked the fact that as well as ordering your food there is a shopping list in the menu to purchase fillets, burgers and pre-cooked meals which you can take home with you (perfect for those on the go, like me) Great place and would return, possibly ordering my burger more medium to well, than medium rare.
Nevashini Patchiappen
Was not happy with the service, waiter had brought half the orders correctly and had forgotten the rest of the side orders, we had to request for it a few times. The steaks were not done as we initially requested, we sent 5 meals back to get the steaks done again. One of the calamari meals came with a sweet chilli sauce which we did not request, when this was sent back the sauce was just wiped off the calamari and sent back.
Blair Burmeister
Forget Turn n Tender or the Butcher Shop, this is where you'll find the best steak in Joburg. The meat is so buttery and flavorsome and always cooked perfectly. They do things the way they should be done when it comes to steak! The herbed butter is also amazing and so are the onion rings/the creamiest, richest, most delicious mash I've ever had.
Jenna Monteith
Had a delicious dinner here last night for my dad's birthday. If you are looking for a great steak, this is the place for you!<br/><br/>The decor is simple and open with beautiful views of Johannesburg's skyline if you are placed at window seats.<br/><br/>There is even an option to order a 'shopping basket' of meat if you want to take home some of their delicious cuts to cook.<br/><br/>The owner takes great pride in the quality of meat they serve. Only getting in top quality meat.<br/><br/>Before the meal we were given a basket of delicious bread- so yummy.<br/><br/>I had a 200kg sirloin steak with mushroom sause and chaplin's shoe string fries. It was mouthwatering. Absolutely delicious.<br/><br/>We paired it with the Thelma wine which was such a treat to the taste buds.<br/><br/>For desert I had their trio of sorbet: mango, strawberry and lemon which was refreshing and full of flavour.<br/><br/>The manager took great pride in his restaurant, checking to see how our meal was and (upon finding out that we had a birthday). Bringing through a giant sparkler for the table.<br/><br/>Lovely experience.

A real hidden gem for those looking for a quality place to get a great meal, especially steak, in a relaxed setting with friendly and attentive service. The menu has variety but not too much, while the wine list is adequate for anyone's needs. I was there for a steak night with mates, sitting outside on the balcony which made for a very pleasant evening. Excellent value for money all round, and in a convenient location for those based between Sandton and Randburg. Looking forward to going back.
Kuno Tschumi
Had my first steak at Chaplin's Grill last night. Wow... sure will be back soon. Friendly and professional service with a smile. The sirloin steak was tender and juicy, the Bearnaise sauce out of this world and the seasoning on the chips different from the regular plain salt. A great experience. I recommend Chaplin's Grill to each and every meat lover out there. Meat is matured to perfection and cooked to your liking. A thank you to Elna and Rainold. Keep it up.
Ria Fraser @CityFlavours
I think at some point everyone looks for the best burger, and today I may have found it!! Had the bacon and avo burger with sweet chilli sauce. The patty was juicy and the flavours was amazing! The service was good as well, the decor is perhaps a bit outdated, but didn't bug me. Definitely go if you are in the area.
Katherine
Went to Chaplin's Grill for the first time the other night for our book club Christmas dinner. One of the girls managed to organise us a set menu so we didn't get to order off the main menu, but our choices on the set menu were really good. We started with the smoked salmon rosettes served on potato rosti. I am a big fan of all things potato so I would've loved more of the rosti to go with the generous amount of salmon, as it was so delicious- the host's mother's recipe we were told. For mains we had a fillet, served with creamed spinach, mash and a mushroom sauce. The steak had been hung for 30 odd days, and all I can say is that it was probably the best steak I have ever eaten. It was so tender and melt-in-your-mouth. The creamed spinach was delish, but the mash was pretty standard as mash goes, and there wasn't much on my plate. To finish we had creme brûlée, one of the nicest I've had at a restaurant. <br/><br/>The restaurant was packed, which is clearly a testament to how good it is, and the staff were really efficient and friendly, as was the host. <br/><br/>Will definitely be back to sample off their main menu.
Genna Hansen
Had dinner at Chaplin's Grill last night and it was fab! A group of 9 of us went for a 3 course meal and wine pairing, which was well worth it! The fillet was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten, so tender and tasty! Would highly recommend it
SalSal
Consistently great. We have eaten at Chaplin's a few times over the last few months and the food and service is always outstanding. On our most recent visit I had the special which was the fillet steak Diane which was a fillet with a mushroom sauce with brandy which was flambé'ed at the table which was superb and had the chocolate molten cake for dessert which also didn't disappoint. They have a good selection of wines and a lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth trying if you enjoy a great steak!
William Price
The best steak in all of Johannesburg! They keep it simple but never disappoint and their service is just as spectacular as their dishes. Always happy to enjoy their steak!
Viev Joor
We had made a booking to spoil my parents to a dinner. Because my parents are quite picky and knowledgeable about their food was it hard to find something. Because of the awesome reviews I had to try it! I had smoked salmon for starter which was define!! Nice and fresh and plated very nicely! My main I can't stop raving about!!! After trying to order several other things that they didn't have, I ordered the lamb... And my goodness it was the best lamb I had ever had, extremely tender and seasoned just right! Quite sad about the fact that the coffee machine wasn't working but all in all an amazing experience with great service! Would recommend this to everybody!!
Linda Meyer
Favorite local steak house. The steaks and burgers are really worth the trip. Outstanding wine menu. Book for the wine pairing evenings - great fun.
Johan Snyman
Food is always good. I've never had a bad meal here. Staff are friendly and attentive. Wine list is reasonable, not spectacular. I've never left not feeling satisfied.
Brett Stevens
We were keen for some good meat and decided to pop in to Chaplins Grill, what a wonderful place. The decor is modern and unique, perhaps a little dark at night but maybe that's the atmosphere they're going for. Loved the complimentary home made bread. We decided to have the 1kg sampler plate and the chicken strip salad, with sides of beer batter onion rings, french fries and a trio of sauces. Both meals were fantastic, the chicken was soft and the dressing was tangy, the 3 different meats were cooked to perfection and the sauces complimented the meat well. We had a creme brule for dessert which was a little runny, but still tasted great. All round a great evening, the staff were fantastic, helpful and very friendly. Will be back to taste some of the other great looking dishes!
Lynzi Bee
Classic South African steak house with a warm homely feel. Every steak is cooked to perfection, their homemade rub brings out amazing flavours in the meat and their mushroom side dish has a great zesty taste. It has a lovely family atmosphere, made more upbeat with their fun Charlie Chaplin decor. Fish is great for vegetarians too.
Jonathan Starmer
Great dinner with excellent warm and welcoming service. Would highly recommend the fish cake starter! Good selection of craft beers too. Quality grill house!

My boyfriend wanted to try out this place due to the good reviews online. I had a bit of trouble trying to book telephonically and managed to get it right on the website.<br/><br/>The bread you receive is fresh and worth a nibble. I was quite disappointed as I wanted to order the prawns in pistachio with pesto sauce on angel's hair pasta. They didn't have it in stock so I ended up having the beef pasta. It was very creamy and filling, so I ended up with a take-away.<br/><br/>My boyfriend wanted the chicken with vegetables, he said his chicken was tender and nicely cooked.<br/><br/>It was quite cosy to have plush seats with cushions. According to other reviews, I'll have to come back to try the steak.

Quite disappointed with the very poor and unfriendly service - seemed as though I was friendlier and more polite than most of the staff! Very little interaction from staff and while the food was decent.. None of my expectations were met or exceeded. All in all, an expensive evening for mediocre food..

We celebrated my aunts birthday there on Saturday. Perfect location as the boys could watch the football. But more importantly - the food was excellent. The meat was just yummy, tasty and enjoyed by all. I had prawns which were just as good.

Went for a birthday party. The starters provided just got better with each platter. Ordered a fillet steak and veg, wow words can not explain now good it was!

My wife and I had dinner there on Saturday evening. We had an early booking so the place was relatively quiet when we arrived.  The service was prompt and attentive and my steak was delicious.  My wife ordered the Atlantic Salmon, which arrived nicely presented and nicely cooked on the outside, but unfortunately was still ice cold on the inside.  We returned it and when it came back it was fine.  Later when a manager came and sat next to our table and enquired if everything had been ok, I mentioned it to him, but that the problem had been resolved. He seemed unconcerned and moved on to the next table.  (I am just not sure why he asked if he didn't really want to hear the answer).  Anyway, I will go back next time I am looking for a great steak as it was probably the best I have had in a while.

This place is nothing out of this world. The service was average and the food was average. I had the grilled line fish, which wasn't really fresh. The restaurant had a nice vibe to it.

My family and I decided to visit Chaplin's Grill to celebrate my mothers birthday. I made the reservation a few hours before which wasn't a problem. <br/><br/>The staff were incredibly attentive to our needs and were able to explain the preparation of certain meals on the menu. <br/><br/>The food was yummy as a whole. The specials that they had for starters delicious. I ordered prosciutto di Parma wrapped around in figs- two food items that I love. The other special they had was prawns sitting on guacamole. For mains I ordered a fillet which was cooked very well. The prices are normal for a steak restaurant. <br/><br/>Would recommend for any occasion!

Visited Chaplin's last weekend. Delicious basted ribs and a great wine list. Also, a good vibe- not too loud but still a busy and warm atmosphere. Will definitely go back!

The best steak in Johannesburg, hands down no contest. All it takes is one glance at the food menu and you can tell the menu was crafted by someone that loves and understands food. I have never been disappointed. A hidden gem for sure.

Always awesome food here and reasonably priced good wine. The steaks are yummy and the service efficient and friendly. Really good for a family (works well with kids too) night out!

The steak here is very good. The steak section of the menu is extremely similar to the Local Grill [*]. <br/><br/>They have a choice between grain-fed and grass fed meat. I chose the 600g grain fed steak sampler platter (fillet, sirloin and rump) done medium rare, coated with their steak rub. Each bite through the crust and flesh of the perfectly marbled sirloin was eye-rollingly ecstasy-inducing. A wonderful piece of meat. The service is attentive, and getting a seat on a Saturday night was not difficult, which was good from a customer's perspective, but sad that such a fine establishment wasn't totally packed.<br/><br/>[*] their beef suppliers are all Halaal, if that's important to you

You just can't go wrong with ordering a recommended steak, or the braised lamb shank on cauliflower mash, at Chaplin's Grill, whether you choose to order from their extensive butchery for a fine meal at home, or to sit and dine in. <br/>Their wine selection is one of the most comprehensive in Johannesburg, in my opinion and as such deserves respect. <br/>This is one of my locals and I enjoy their monthly Food & Wine Pairing evenings with Rainold!

I like it - the mash is yum!

What a cool little spot! While rather unassuming from the outside this restaurant is quite a hidden gem. The steaks are phenomenal and the freshly baked bread that is served as an appetizer is just sensational with some olive oil & balsamic vinegar. The decor is sophisticated and tables are not squished together which gives it an intimate feel. The chef obviously knows what he/she is doing as even the vegetarian dishes are great! Unfortunately the service was a bit poor and food took a long time to come to the table.

They have jacked up the starters and i had hot figs wrapped with parma ham and with blue cheese. Excellent! with My friend had the fillet steak which was 'melt in the mouth' and had excellent flavour for fillet steak. It was the grain fed variety.<br/>I had been there before and had the boerewors which I wouldn't recommend. ... lots of gristle and small bits of bone.<br/>The shoe string chips were delicious.<br/>The decor is reasonable but it got very noisy when full.<br/>There is a good wine list.<br/>Since the review above I have been back several times and had the filet steak myself. I must rate it as one of the best I have ever had. If I could I would give it a 9/10.<br/>I've been back several times now and i reiterate they have the best steaks in town.

Awesome every time. Best service in Joburg. Amazing team looking after the customers.

Fantastic night out for our anniversary dinner! The service was brilliant and the food was divine! The chocolate fondant is a MUST!

Chaplin's Grill has become our go-to restaurant when we're in the mood for good food, good ambience, and being treated as regulars. They know where we like to sit and what we like to order as our starters, which is fantastic. I enjoy their menu, which is quite varied, although I usually go for their sweetbreads, as this is not an item found on most menus. Absolutely divine. My personal favourite from the main courses is the ostrich fillet - the chef's special, and for good reason. They've recently added wild boar to their repertoire, although this is not on the menu itself. Tender, spicy and sweet, this stew hits all the right notes on the flavour train. <br/><br/>I'm a bit weird about dessert here - I prefer having oysters, which they know well enough to have pre-ordered for me during the mains section of our last visit. However, I have it on good authority that the red velvet cheesecake and the baked chocolate pudding are to die for. <br/><br/>I have had a couple of incidents where the bartender has made a mistake with my martini - making it sweet, with a twist of lemon, instead of very dry, with extra olives - but this is a small enough mistake as I haven't yet found a place that excels at making the perfect dry & dirty vodka martini right off the bat.

We visited this restaurant for a team lunch. They split out group into four tables facing different directions instead of a long table which I did not like. The cocktails were not pleasant. They made a frozen margarita with coffee liqueur. What was nice is the different choice of beef they had and the option to order meat to take home and cook on your own. The brinjal starter I had was very bitter and I couldn't eat it. The duck spring roll was average. I had duck for main course and it was rather dry and lacked taste. The chocolate dessert was average and did not deliver on what it promised. The meals were quite pricey. Service was slow despite the restaurant not being busy. The restaurant closes between lunch and dinner so you need to leave by three.
