Absolutely divine! Great food in an even greater restaurant! Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere make you feel very comfortable very fast. Only downside is the parking location, getting back onto the busy road that runs alongside the restaurant can be a bit challenging at times

One of the best restaurants in all of Johannesburg, offering the best in food. It is just sad that they will be closing on the 31st of December.

This is not Founder's Grill anymore, but now Jolly Rodgers. I loved the atmosphere, and I am delighted that a restaurant is open again in the same spot. Founders ... I miss your stirfry.

Was fantastic atmosphere, staff was impeccable service, food was fantastic. Only suggestion would had liked a cavery where leg of lamb and roasted meat was cut individually. Was a 5 star Xmas lunch. Well done to all at Founder. You are going to be missed.

An old classic, used to frequent during the late 90s / early 2000s. Was happy to see they are still operating & booked for our 14th Anniversary to take a trip down memory lane... Excellent steakhouse with some traditional home cooking like just as I remember, excellent steak & lamb. Service was fast & friendly. Ambience was very unique & old school South African. Good craft selection on tap, however due to Covid stock constraints, Bar area nice, however would recommend the restaurant area for a more romantic / relaxed ambiance esp by the fire place. Price wasn't cheap but felt the food & evening was worth every Rand spent.

The place to go to for delicious food and warm cosy atmosphere. They definitely know how to make the best burgers, steaks, vegetables, chips, salads and desserts. Especially the creme brulle.

Had the best time last night! Their food and drinks are top shelf. Our waiter was extremely friendly and loved the vibe. Will definitely see us again soon!

Founders Grill has always been our favourite restaurant for a luxury meal. We were delighted to be able to try out your midweek specials, and your T-Bone steak specials were out of this world amazing!!

We had a Tbone special a few months back and it was one of the best steaks we'd had in a long time. Service was brilliant too. We have been dying to come back and finally did tonight. ..brought some friends with as well. What a disappointing meal. Steaks were overcooked and tough, chips barely fried. Service was still good though and chips were fried up again when we asked...but hmm. Was a bit disappointed.

Great restaurant. Their steaks are amazing; the ribs are good; the ambiance is also old-school-like a mining town from the 60s. Really a good experience!

I had a business lunch a few weeks ago. It is quite a popular lunch spot. My colleagues reply enjoyed their steaks. My vegetarian platter was quite large and consisted of a spinach and feta pie, falafel, hummus, vegetables and olives. This was tasty and I was quite pleased that they accommodate vegetarians. Service was a bit slow and decor outdated.

This is a genuine watering hole...I love the atmosphere. The service is always great and the food has never disappointed. It is a great after work hang out place to unwind...it makes drinking good.

The food is always good especially their steaks, but today I'm quite disappointed that I ordered the garlic pot. It is very, very bland with a clumpy sausage, too much of it, it also tasted like a lot of flower gets added. Won't have tot next time as it doesn't detract from the great service and better steaks.

Our most favourite grill house. The signature steak, homemade bread and cheesecake are to die for. I have experienced the best service from your waitress, Nicole on two occasions and once been served by Ashley. Your staff are wonderful and your manager (I think he said his name was Cornay) is really top notch. No wonder Founders has been going for so long. Well done

My husband brought me here on our official first date. I liked the atmosphere but I was not blown away by the food. And the dessert was dreadful. It was a curdled eggy creme brûlée. Haven't been back since then.

Horrible experience! When we walked into the restaurant there was no one to greet us or show us to a table despite one of the waitresses walking right past us twice! The third time we stopped her and asked her if we could sit in the outdoor area, her response was just "yes" and she walked away. After sitting down and waiting some more, a black male waitress was sent to offer us menus and something to drink and only then did it dawn on me why the first waitress couldn't be bothered to serve us! At this point, I was no longer interested in staying at the restaurant so my companion and I got up and left! I refuse to spend my money in a place that has racial undertones.

Parking is abit of let down or perhaps I didn't see enough, especially since it's around a sharp curve.<br/><br/>Truly a hidden gem, that one passes by daily and never takes note.<br/>So spacious with the bar on the other end, which also accommodates the smokers.<br/><br/>Loved every dish we ordered, grills were tender and prawns were succulent.<br/>I found the dessert abit of let down, didn't live up to the same exp expectations as the main.<br/><br/>Great all round restaurant for any occasion, date night, family, drinks or birthdays

Cozy atmosphere and good food. Also a separate pub and outside area for a more casual event. Try the oxtail or lamb. Very good service from the long established staff.

Since I can remember this restaurant has been open, and for the first time we tried it out for my mother-in-laws birthday. What can I say...except AMAZING. My starter, phyllo pastry filled with Camembert cheese topped with cranberry sauce did not disappoint. Main Course: Oxtail - out of this world, really tasty. Service was outstanding, staff knows the menu inside-out. They will be seeing more of us in the future.

The original Founders Grill and so glad to see its surviving the onslaught of the big shopping malls.<br/>Food is seriously good , in spite of being pub fare so dont misjudge the exterior as being a redneck dive out in the sticks.<br/>I literally had to stop myself licking plate clean -had the chicken liver starters (dee-lish!) ,fillet steak mains (superb!) and ended up ordering phyllo pastry desert (exquisite!) -quite literally rolled out of there.there wasnt one bad dish in our party of 4 -everyone thoroughly enjoyed their respective meals <br/>

The cocktails were delicious. Unfortunately we're vegetarian and this is a Grill house establishment, so the vegetarian fare left something to be desired... I will definitely be back for cocktails

Once again we found ourselves at Founders. A place we know will never disappoint and keeps their standard consistent. Firstly the rolls are always delicious. We went straight to mains, I had the mini sole and prawn combo which I thoroughly enjoyed. I had a taste of the spare ribs, "out of this world" barely describes them. One of the parties at the table had a grilled Kingklip and pronounced it to be very good. The other had a steak whicn was apparently a bit tough but was rectified immediately , the service was absolutely fantastic. All in all , they never disappoint and I highly recommend them.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. We ordered the muscle pot and the white wine sauce was phenomenonal! I started eating it like it was soup! Really enjoyed it. We both ordered the prawns, they were so delicious, the veg was awesome, and HUGE portions. I really enjoyed the mash! We then had the cheesecake with black cherry sauce, yes, just yes. All the yeses. Really good dessert. Our service was fabulous, our waitress was so accommodating, friendly and patient, also trained so well with by the specials and knowledge of the food, this does not go unseen! We'd eaten so much we were over stuffed! The decor is very cool and rustic, old wagon wheels and blacksmith tools, quite country. Lovely set up, and the owner/manager? -Awesome. She is on the ball and knows how to run a restaurant. This is a must try. Thank you, Founder's, we are coming back! Love. Jambo.

I visited Founder's Grill for the Monday steak special for R50 around lunch time. The restaurant has these awesome rustic feel to it and the staff are really attentive, which I just love. The steak -which came with chips - was amazing given the price.

Always assured of a great meal when you go to Founders. The staff are very friendly and efficient, and the food is very good. I can specifically recommend any of the pies they have as specials -eg  beef & beer, duck & cherry, etc. Mouthwatering!

The food was fantastic!!! I had the calamari with lemon butter and rice, and Cale had the fillet medallions... FLIP so delish!! They have a fire place which made it a lovely dinner out in this cold weather :)

I was pleasantly surprised with The founders grill. You enter through the bar area where you can also dine and it has that old pub style feel. Pass the bar and you find the main dining area. Tables were reserved so make a booking. The decor had this old school industrial feel and it warm and snug inside. After skimming the menu it's evident their speciality is steak so steak it is. The only problem is there's so many varieties of steak to choose from. I settled on the sirloin with a pepper sauce and Tim chose the sirloin and rib combo. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful and brought us delicious bread to snack on whilst we wait. I noticed a specials board and the waitress says it changes daily and is completely different to the normal menu which is great if you're in the mood for something else.<br/>Our food arrives and it looked amazing. My steak had the perfect char and was pink in the centre. My knife went through it like hot knife in butter. The sauce was creamy and filled with fresh black pepper yumminess. The ribs had a great BBQ basting. I will definitely be back as I found a great steak joint that's close to me.

My favorite steak house of all time. Nothing can beat the quality and basting sauce. Even a trip to Argentina underwhelmed me with the quality of meat on offer. Founders, well done!

Decor has nice old times character. Service was pleasant and attentive. The food was nice. I had the fillet tower special. Perhaps too much sauce. Will probably return for a second visit.

Tradtional old school steak house that focuses on quality meat prepared to a high standard! Always friendly service! Only let down was the ice cream and bar one sauce.

It has been here for a really long time.Decor is a old style steakhouse theme, dark, romantic, relaxing and I liked it.<br/>No screaming kids around and soft music, soft lights ....its an escape of note from the shopping noise and bussel.<br/>Service is good and attentive.<br/>Food is really good and fresh.<br/>Thank you for always keeping the standard so high!

Founders has a good menu and prepares the meals excellently. Great service and lovely decor top it off nicely. Some tables are placed a little too close together.

I was so lucky to have an afternoon to kill with my son; and we decided to go old school for lunch. As he says, eating at Founders is like going back in time; there is something in the smell of an old established place - a combination of seared meat, wood oil and garlic that cannot be found anywhere else. (And to clarify, its a wonderful smell!)<br/>We had prawn cocktails to start followed by ribs and a fillet with cranberry and camembert topping, absolutely superb! We finished off with icecream and barone sauce and choc mousse. I grew up on RJ's barone milkshakes and frankly nothing compares, but this chocolate sauce did hold its own.<br/><br/>The decor has not changed in forever, think old mining equipment and wagon wheels- dusting must be a nightmare! But the staff looked happy dusting and serving so all good..<br/>This place is like a pair of old sweat pants, don't always appeal to everyone but man are they comfortable and can always be trusted to make you happy.

Visited again on Fiday 20 May 2016 and was again impressed with the qaulity of service and food.<br/>The waitress's knowledge about the specials and wine selection were impressive.<br/>Had the chicken livers starter which was good although very small portion and gf had the borewors starter which seemed a better option.<br/>Had the 500g Tbone, medium rare of course which was delish- the basting sauce very nice.<br/>Gf had the 350 g steak and chicken combo which looked nice value for money combo.<br/>One point of criticism- too many smokers in pub area and the amount of polluting smoke was disgusting-the owners must seriously consider stronger extracter fans.

Such a great time.. service was excellent.. staff were friendly and helpful. From starters to mains and dessert could not fault. Well done. Will be back soon

End of the month, Saturday night, the place was packed! The setting didn't however make us feel uncomfortable or cramped in anyway despite of it, but the atmosphere was still rather homely and inviting. <br/><br/>Our food orders: the gourmet chicken burger with a side order of mash (the chicken wasn't too dry and the caramelized onion rings+rocket complemented it quite well); pork chops (decent size and not overcooked at all); and a veggie platter (often the forgotten dish at a steak house, this one was pretty impressive and made the vegetarian in the group rather delighted for a change). <br/><br/>My only gripe: I have no issue with waiting slightly longer than usual for my order when a place is super busy and I know it's quality food I'm getting when I've been there before, but when people around you are already finishing up their meals and you're still waiting for yours 15 minutes+ after similar ordering times, I get slightly annoyed.<br/><br/>Besides that, overall, the food was really good: impressive portions for decent prices; and the service friendly.<br/><br/>For a restaurant that's been around for a long time, you can see why people keep going back for more.

I come here as often as I can. Owners always hands-on and close by for a chat. Great steak and very good prices. the waiters are friendly. My wife loves the vegetarian platter. Decor has a very rustic feel to it, but fits the vibe perfectly. Always full when we go there, so I always book. I've even ordered take-aways once or twice, which was just as good as if you would eat there.

We had great steaks and starters. Its nice to find a good steakhouse close to home. My only criticism is that it felt a bit stuffy. I felt like We were having dinner at the Queen's palace. We were the only customers on the dining side and it was deadly quiet. We could hear the waitress's heels as see approached from across the room. It became a bit humorous! Still it was nice and they have great specials!

This restaurant has quite a unique style when it comes to decor, almost takes you back to the Groot Trek days...<br/>The food is delicious, service is good and the atmosphere is also not too bad. As far as pricing goes, it's affordable enough if you feel like a good steak and some nice wine.

Another fantastic steak house in Jozi! It's the original Founders and keeps pumping out the good stuff, and well! All steaks are great and service is such a pleasure. The vibe is also really nice and relaxed. Pop in if you haven't :)

Founder's Grill is an old time favourite and a super place to enjoy and hearty home style meal. The service is consistently of a high standard and the restaurant has a warm and welcoming feel.

This grillhouse is average. Yes I know you don't order seafood at a grillhouse but I expected it to be average not bad. I had the calamari and prawns combo - the prawns were Prince prawns not queen, the calamari portion was small and extremely bland. The overall portion was quite small. I would recommend the side you go for is the stirfried veggies - it is really yummy. The kingklip was bland and old. The lamb was nice and served as a portion of four not the usual three you get at other restaurants. Dessert of cheesecake and creme brûlée weren't bad.
