Review Cafe Duarte - Randburg

Marco Machado
Ordered trio combo, great mix of flavours, chicken livers in red wine sauce was great, as was the Calamari, and the Trinchado was fantastic, especially when dipping the homemade roll in the trinchado sauce. Brazilian Espatade also very tasty, and the added choriço fried to perfection. We can definitely recommend this quiet restaurant

Great spot. Owner and management deal with customer feedback very professionally. Hospitality awareness is spot on. Pricing on drinks is super competitive and food is fresh prepared and without fault! Try the chicken or the the calamari - you can't go wrong.
Nico Pretorius
Decent meal, okay service and decently priced. Not really a place to go with small kids, but if they can sit still you can take them. Good milkshakes.

Loved the tranquility. Went on a Sunday to have just a cute breakfast and the staff was amazing . Enjoyed the view as well. The menu consists of alot of variety so much to choose from and accommodates even the smallest of Budgets . It Closes really early so I'd say its perfect for breakfasts and Lunches .Dinners not so much .Also .Also Google their menu before you go or ask their friendly staff to advice you on the best meals

First time dining inside Cafe Duarte and this cozy restaurant has left the best impressions! Conveniently located, it's a great spot to grab a bite or have some drinks. The staff were all very hospitable, efficient and complied with Covid-19 safety regulations. We were served by Melody, who was very friendly! The menu offered a variety of dishes at reasonable prices. So glad to have found this hidden gem in the heart of Randburg. I'll definitely be back again soon.

Had a fantastic experience at Cafe Duarte. Tasty meal with great flavors and amazing service. Our waitress was so friendly, helpful and somehow knew what we wanted before we even asked. Definitely a place that I will be returning to so I can try more of their dishes.

I go to a restaurant for the food - it was really, really good... A little training required for the staff but no real complaints... Very pleasant experience thank you...

Cafe Duarte is the most amazing little Portuguese spot with BIG flavors on the plate in Jozi. They are really recommended.

A great big thank you to you for the warm, friendly and efficient service we enjoyed from Justine, Nomsa and Linda, on Friday. Your staff are lovely, your food is delicious and the prices extremely reasonable. Thanks for making my mom's birthday seamless and incredibly enjoyable. Two thumbs up!

1st visit, but we will definately return! Great service and good food!

Very safe during corona. Our friendly waitress sanitized everything including the pen we used to sign for the bill.

At first, I was quite sceptical about the place since I only found out the place through the Entertainer app. As it turns out, I did have quite a good experience. Service was excellent and the steak was pretty good except the sides were doused in too much olive oil. Other than that, it wasn't bad.

This unassuming eatery in the North, lovely, quiet, clean with ambient lighting. My partner and I choose an outside table and ordered the Café D Steak, she ordered a side of salad and the steak well done, I on the other ordered my steak rear with rendered fat and perfectly done I might add, and the most delicious roasted vegetables.

We had a friendly and efficient waitress named Melody who was very accommodating.

This hidden gem is defiantly worth returning to
With residing and working in the Randburg area, I’ve been at this restaurant 6 times in total and have had good meals from it. On Thursday(9/05/19) afternoon I decided to order a meal from Cafe Duarte through Mr Delivery and was very excited to enjoy it, only to find a half bitten chip at the bottom. I was so disgusted discovering it and literally had to run to the loo and whatever I managed to eat came right out again. I immediately called Chris(manager) thereafter who apologized profusely and said he’ll have it collected and also investigate and revert back. It was never collected for return to the restaurant.

Chris called back an hour later stating him and his boss looked at the footage and the chips was gripped with a thong and that’s what broke the chip. He also said his boss said I’m welcome to come to the restaurant and have a look at the footage for myself.

A few minutes ago I received a call from Duarte, the owner telling me he looked at the footage and he’s happy with what he saw as it was the thong which broke the chip. Now here’s the thing...I know the difference between a chip which has been bitten and one which has been broken off by an utensil. It was clear and very evident this restaurant decided to use leftover chips for this take away, which is appalling to say the least. When I tried to explain to the owner what I experienced he became obstinate, rude and defensive.

I then asked him if that’s the case, I’d love to come and have a look at the footage which Chris said his boss(Duarte the owner) was happy for me to do so. Duarte then tells me no I can’t and he won’t allow me to see the footage of his restaurant etc. I then ask if their calls are recorded of which he replied yes to. Asked him to please listen to the call with Chris and I where he invited me to come look at the footage. Owner became more rude and told me he will not let me see it because of the POPIA act. So I asked why was I invited by his manager on a recorded call to do so and now he’s denying me to do so.

One thing is as clear as daylight...Duarte the owner of Cafe Duarte has something to hide and it confirms they’ve used some customers leftover chips for my order. This just made me nauseous and sick to my gut again. This is disgusting...be careful of what you consume at Cafe Duarte.

I have been using this place for a long time and their food is always consistent.good size portions, food is always fresh, waiters are always friendly, open during loadshedding, and do corkage. I will always go back. it was also our first time trying the pasta, and it was a good 5 out of 5

After the super awful experience (served with rotten vege) at the beginning of the year, I've decided to give another try and visit this place again simply I was in the neighbourhood. Their menu is still simple but food (Prego roll) came out to be good enough for the price. I think they have changed the management, and received really friendly and good service. This is a good place to chill with friends or by yourself, I'm glad I gave another try.

I've eaten here twice and never again. Food is unimpressive and takes far too long to be prepared. On both occasions cakes were stale. Service is friendly though.

Very disappointing. Popped in with a friend yesterday and ordered capuccino and cake. Only one drink arrived as "The cream was not good and was being replaced." (This from the waitress as she gave me my drink??) 2nd capuccino arrived 10 minutes later WITH SOUR CREAM. No apology from management or waitron. As she preferred not to try the cream option again, my friend asked for froth on the replacement. When it arrived ANOTHER 10 minutes later, the coffee was cold. To top it all, when I checked the bill later, we had been charged R36 per capuccino. (R4 more than than the already exorbitant price on the menu.) R176 for bad service and tasteless cake. Shan't visit again.

Food was covered in over-used oil. We waited an hour for our food. Worst wrap I've ever eaten. Service was pathetic. Wouldn't come again or recommend anyone. Luckily we had the entertainer app so at least we only had to pay for one meal.
Ulrike Kruger
We often go here for date nights. Reasonable prices and delicious food. The trinchado is a must! Their burgers are great too, and they have the best cheese cake around.
Pieterkotze5
Wonderful experience for us being new in the area. Food is delicious and creatively presented and very reasonably priced. Will definitely see us again!
Sit outside, the terrace on a summer night is a pleasure. Inside the lighting is a bit harsh..But the rest is perfect. Good food and excellent service.

We always have such a great time here. The manager and waiters are very friendly and creates a welcoming atmosphere. The baked cheesecake is a MUST!
Gisela Krischker
What a lovely surprise! Excellent freshly prepared food with good quality ingredients. Tagliatelle made fresh on request. Nomsa was very attentive to our every need. Try the Pastries de Nata!

I have visited Cafe' D a few times now and on each occasion I have been served with beautifully presented, fresh food. The staff is super friendly, making you feel so welcome. They do not skimp on quality - they bake their own bread and serve hand cut chips, which is great 👌

05 May 2017 ordered a 'medium' cooked steak meal and received a 'rare' steak meal - this was pointed out to the blonde "senior manager" but her primary school attitude problem came to the fore - How embarrassing!?! Why don't the cooks not know how to cook steaks to order??!?? Rather get staff who actually know about customer service maybe then there will be no complaints about the food....

Best chocolate moose pancakes in SA😋 So delicious and so beautifully presented. The staff is always friendly and it is a stunning place. Feel so at home here❤️

Fantastic service from Melody, just had cheese cake with cream and coffee "delicious 😋" I think it is stupid to ask me to write a note with one hundred character

Went here for a quick bite one Friday afternoon - we ordered toasted paninis, a café D toasta and a mista cheese and tomato. The portion sizes were tiny compared to most panini toasteds but were surprisingly very filling and very tasty! The steak was done well and the cheese quantity was perfect! The service was a little bit slow as our waitress seemed a bit confused because they don't write down orders.

I also had a chai latté which was delicious but also very small. I think Café Duarte is an ideal place for a light meal that leaves room for dessert!

My girlfriend and I went for breakfast and had a chicken prego breakfast and wrap. We experienced excellent and friendly service. The food was great (everything is home made), the place is vibrant and vibey. The place is also really affordable! I was surprised to see how small or bill was considering we ordered breakfast, drinks and pudding. All in all a great experience.

I had a drink and quick snack at Cafe Duarte with a friend the other day. The place seems nice enough and the outside seating is lovely, but the food was quite average.
I had the frozen Chocolate smoothie which was nice and refreshing, and not too sweet. I also had their sweet potato fries which weren't very impressive. They give you a massive portion, but the chips are quite bland. A nice touch would have been to include a tasty dip with the dish. My friend had the prego and she was a bit put off by the meat, which she asked to be medium rare but came out so rare that she couldn't eat most of it.
Kat
Pack salt...and pepper. Whilst the setting is fantastic, and the menu offers ample choice, we have found our food to be bland and lacking in flavour every single time.

I have been going to Café Duarte for quite some time now. Initially it was very nice, tasty food and excellent service. But for the last few months I have been very disappointed with the food and the service offered. It seems that every time we go have lunch there always seems to be some kind of problem. Today I was extremely annoyed as I always order the calamari wrap and it was always so tasty with quite a nice portion of calamari tubes. Today it was not tubes, it was squid heads with a whole lot of lettuce leaves. I was very annoyed when I saw this and sent the dish right back and asked the waiter what was this? He mentioned that the owner has changed the wrap to a combination of tubes and squid heads. I pointed out to him that the menu mentions calamari tubes and not squid heads!!!! If they want to serve you squid heads then the menu should be changed. I am sorry to say that I will not go back to this coffee shop again as I have had a few bad experiences recently and I ended up with no lunch today. I will not waste any more of my lunch time with Café Duarte because the food and service has gone downhill and we have complained on various occasions to the manager. The last time we ordered breakfast and we sent it back because the bacon was burnt. They have lost us as customers and our business clients as well.

With only a few days to put together my best friends graduation dinner. Planning this on a business trip out of town, certainly had its challenges, Cafe D mangers service was mind blowing. They made every effort to assist and went the extra mile to make it the perfect evening...

Cafe D's outside Deck was perfect setting for sundowners; killer cocktails, as we watched the sunset and started our evening.

We ordered some Rissoles and traditional Chourico from the new PETISCO menu. The Rissoles, available in prawn, chicken and beef variations. All flavorful, my favorite was the creamy prawn filling to perfection with a hint of peri!

Mains at the table varied. The Mushroom steak, steak Prego, Chourico pasta and crumbed chicken all highlights. The crumbed chicken was the clear winner. The Fresh mushroom sauce topping enhanced the succulent moist chicken served with a side of crunchy stirfry veggies.

Didn't get to desert as we were all stuffed and had already overstayed there 9pm close time but will definitely visit again!

Been visiting this restaurant on a very regular basis for the last 3 years.

There sauces are brilliant and they are very generous with it leaving you asking for a a piece of bread after the meal to make sure none of it gets wasted.

If you what to go out for a rugby game and you are looking for someplace quite this is a good idea as I have noticed that with most of the big games there are seldom more than two tables seated during the game.

There food are also well priced and the portions are a good size.

We have lived opposite Cafe Duarte for a while, so when a quick coffee was required they were a walk away. We have seen them develop and grow since they first opened, and they just seem to be getting better and better! The introduction of the new deck at the back is a great addition and I'm sure we'll be spending more time there in the future...

Hope they keep refining the experience, because it's turning into a really great cafe!

Cafe Duarte is a pleasant lunch spot right next to the local grocery store with delicious cake and coffee. The decor is nice and the service is good.

When I first moved to Linden this was the place that welcomed to me the neighborhood.

Initially the wifi was free and uncapped then they put a cap of 100mb per day! At the time I was waiting for Telkom to install my line so I was bummed.

The food is average at best. I had a pasta that was drenched in oil and the red velvet cup cakes had a bitter after taste.

The place is quite clean and the staff mean well but aren't very knowledgable of the menu. There is a manager who was little rude.

Once I got my internet set up I didn't go back there. There is nothing memorable about the place.

After an amazing game of rugby and a chilly evening we were looking for a cozy coffee shop on the way home... Well after browsing through the menu and enjoying the ambiance of Cafe Duarte we were enticed into ordering dinner... My prego pasta was packed with magical spices and succulent chicken. The rump steak was not the greatest around but the sauce was unusual, in a good way 😀 a touch of garnish would have made both dishes more appealing to the senses. The two stars of our impromptu dinner were the milo milkshake and the pasties de nata... We will give them another try

Beautiful food, excellent service, food was prepared quickly and we had the most friendly and accommodating waiters. Fully vegan meal made exactly as we requested. Crumbed mushroom, salad, toast and olive oil with perfectly scrumptious avocado and chips. A very conveniently located restaurant with ample parking and an outside seating area.

They asked us to come back to make it up to us... which we did without letting them know. It was great! Since then we haven’t had another bad experience 😊

We went to Cafe Duarte on Bram Fischer for dinner on Friday. We arrived at 7 and realized at about 7:45 that we hadn't had our starters yet. My boyfriend asked the waitress about it on his way to the bathroom. While he was gone I watched the waitress speak to the kitchen staff who hadn't received the order and then the manager run to the storeroom to get the chorizo we ordered. When the manager finally came to speak to us or should I say lie to us, she said we'd waited almost an hour because another table had ordered mains before us... Seriously!? The table next to us who arrived half an hour after us then received their food, so there went that story! Other than that, the food was quite mediocre. I understand that these things happen, but if they had just told us the truth and apologized we would've been a lot more forgiving and we would probably have gone back.

Warm, cosy and delicious food and drinks. I love Cafe Duarte because it's close, comfortable and affordable. The coffee is great, I've often stopped by just to get a takeaway cappucino before work and I'm not even a big coffee drinker. There are also very interesting milkshake combinations and everything is served with the utmost care and attention to detail. My favourite time to go is for breakfast after a Parkrun. The breakfasts are incredible and you can make your own breakfast, which is a good option for fussy eaters. I've also been there for dinner and the Portuguese cuisine is divine, their prawns are delectable and the Pork fillet is also a winner. Their cocktails are also really delicious. The best thing is that the service is excellent!

Really nice coffee and good service! A cosy breakfast spot with good food. It was a bit chilly to sit on the veranda but in the summer it would be a great setting.

Popped in Cafe Duarte to have breakfast, after someone recommended this place. The price range is very reasonable and considering how much they fill up your plate; it is value for your money. My boyfriend ordered the eggs benedict with salmon and I had the 'Gino'. My meal was absolutely lovely( although it was a little under seasoned). With the eggs Benedict on the other hand, the hollandaise sauce was very stodgy and just didn't taste right. So my boyfriend complained and asked the manager if there was anything they could do about that. I anticipated the manager just writing it off, but instead was very friendly, took the plate back and started to make the hollandaise from scratch himself. Have to commend the customer service! We also had the baked cheesecake( which was absolutely yummy) and a red velvet cupcake. The menu isn't that creative, but it does offer some good tasting simple meals

Good, honest, friendly diner with a wonderful Portuguese twist. Have been frequenti g Cafe D for years and can recommed most of the menu- breakfast, lunch and Dinner.
Gerlind
On arrival for Saturday lunch staff (plenty of them in a fairly empty restaurant) were rather lackluster in their response to us. It took some time for one person to grace us with menus. We were about to leave after a further wait when our order was taken. The biscuit with the cappuccino was rather loaded with bicarb - unpleasant. Our pork fillet was large, dry and soaked in an extremely over salted sauce. Disappointing outing.

Officially my new favorite spot for Friday night sundowners as the outside seating area lends itself perfectly to sitting in the sunshine sipping a glass of vino 🌞 (or one of their many delicious looking cocktails). The service was immaculate, our waiter Chris was attentive without being intrusive.
The starter portion of peri peri chicken livers was amazing, served with freshly baked bread to soak up the mightily fine gravy.
Going to test out something different on the menu when I return next week. To be continued....!

Had a lovely relaxed breakfast at Cafe Duarte. It obviously difficult to get breakfast wrong... But it's also not trivial to make exceptional breakfast and these guys served good food from fresh ingredients in a lovely setting.

I had a mini breakfast and added chicken livers from the lunch menu. Amazing combination (they should really consider putting chicken livers on the breakfast menu.

It's a little pricier than the usual cafe breakfast (admittedly because I added an additional item).

Will definitely be back!
Lerato Thuthuka Kumalo
Cutest little restaurant. Good service, food is overwhelming delicious and exciting. And all for a really good price. Definately one of my favourite little gems.
Shivaan Govindasamy
Cafe Duarte was my destination for some drinks on Friday. It's a small restaurant, hidden behind the checkers in the shopping mall. They have a wide range of cocktails and a good size menu. While my initial plan was only to get some drinks, I was tempted by the menu and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the chicken wrap and it was one of the best wraps I have ever had. Will definitely going back again.
Gigliola Conte-Patel
I love the design of this restaurant, you can see that the owners put a lot of thought into the look and feel. They should have paid more attention to the menu, I've eaten there a few times and the only dish that wasn't totally disappointing was the prawns. Real pity!
Santisha
Went through today for a quick supper and ordered the peri peri prawns. The portions were huge and the prawns were seasoned to perfection. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Kat :)
We've come here a few times, mostly to get take-out, which is perhaps where our fault lies, so this review is based solely on the take-out quality of Café Duarte. Whilst the portion sizes are not bad (for a girl), I find the food lacking in flavour and usually I have to add a pile of spices. But, in their favour, everything is freshly and professionally prepared and the chefs are a joy to watch
Samantha-Jane McClure
Great atmosphere and one of the best breakfast spots I know in Johannesburg. My favourite Eggs Benedict by far. A hidden gem. The outside area is lovely for a brunch on a warm summer morning and the coffee is to die for.
Derek Hall
Had a friend's birthday bash here - and was delighted with the outdoor patio and delicious (although somewhat ineffective) cocktails. One does wonder if all the shots of rum were in there...
The espetada was outstanding, however! A delicious piece of meat well prepared with crispy fresh vegetables. A simple yet effective dusting of spices on succulent meat will always win me over.
The menu looks worth a few visits, and admittedly we were a big table, but I will only go when I am relaxed and not in a rush.

This restaurant is a very interesting cafe-style restaurant, they bake their own bread and offers some pastries etc. We tried their burgers once, and it was absolutely divine! Also tried breakfast, and it was disappointing. I will recommend this restaurant for a quick dinner, or burger take aways. They really put some effort in their burgers...fresh buns...proper meat...fresh lettuce etc. Last night we went there and had crumbed chicken and chorizo and beef pasta. I was very impressed with both, the portion sizes, and the taste. The beef strips in the pasta was tender, not skimpy, and very tasty. The price was reasonable and value for money. Worth trying, and it is conveniently located in Ferndale on Bram Fischer drive.

So being the busy bee I am on the weekend I happen to find myself in Ferndale and seriously craving a good breakfast . . . Walked into Cafe Duarte and was attended to very quickly I had a chicken and mayo toast and the boyfriend had eggs benedict which he said was okay but for the life of me I understand chicken and mayo to taste different I had a roast chicken toast which didn't taste nice at all and then we had waited and waited for about an hour for someone to remove our dishes and bring us the bill , bearing in mind that this restaurant had about 6 customers in total so my review is based on terrible food and extremely poor service waiters would rather stand around and talk to each other then attend to a customer not worth trying out just a waste of time and money , I totally agree with the 1 review I saw about the restaurant . . . I will never go back there again
FoodLover
The service is moderate, breakfast is definitely not their forte. We ordered poached eggs, and what we got was like a shedded hard boiled egg. We tried their burgers one evening, and that was much better. They bake their own bread, with a piece of steak, and is very tasty. I feel it is too risky to recommend, because you do not know what to expect.
Liza
Cute hidden place. Very relaxed. Freshly baked goodies. Modern and clean. Awesome for a quick cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Always a good option!
Chanel White
My husband and I went here for a lunch in the middle of the week. There were only two other occupied tables. The service- appalling! Our waitress was very slow and she mixed up my order- I ordered a chicken prego wrap and was served a prego roll. My husband ordered a breakfast with steak. He requested the steak to be medium. However, it was a dry piece of minute steak so not much could be done to improve it. We were really not impressed with the food or the service. The servers were all having their lunch and our waiter never came to clear our plates after we were done. Was just a horrible experience. Won't be back.

My husband and I came here when we were still dating, many moons ago. The fact that it is still going is a testament to the fact that it serves great food!

I popped in here this afternoon for a coffee after a salon appointment and was very impressed with how this restaurant has evolved over the years. Their coffee is very good - coming from an Italian such as myself, this is high praise! - and I am excited by what I saw on the menu. We shall definitely be back to sample the food!
Owen Tennant
Been here quite often only for a coffee but tried a lunch , had a creamy beef pasta which was very tasty , homemade pasta and tender beef strips , nicely presented. Done a bit of work to outside patio , looks attractive in the weak winter sun , got some some decent music , bit stuck away but worth a try.
Lisa
This place is deceiving, looks like a regular coffee shop that you would pass by. But please do not miss out, sit down and eat their delicious food!! Good burgers, homemade pasta and Portuguese food made to perfection. Well priced and value for money!
Vaugan Nayagar
Had an excellent breakfast here. Everything on the plate was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Way better than some other bigger breakfast franchises...
Theo Janse Van Rensburg
We just love this place. The food, the waiters, the patio and everything❤️
Maimoona Sheila Omuabor
Food portions quiet big, though absoluteky delicious. Service is outstanding. Their carrot cake is one of the best not forgetting the red velvet cup cake. Highly recommended.
Andre
I was here a couple weeks ago and forgot to write my review BUT I feel the fact that they give mini red-velvet cupcake warrants the respect of any hipster. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The food is good but the real hero was the extra strong coffee! Overall it's a chilled place.
Tamara Arden
Breakfast was complimented by a great playlist. Reasonable prices for large portions. Good friendly service who gave you the right amount of time to order. Nice Sunday brekkies spot.
Marcelle Radyn
This is definitely i little gem in the heart of Randburg! They have an interesting selection on the menu, a great variety of delicious teas and something for anyone with a sweet tooth. Their prices are absolutely reasonable and tasty value for money. The staff know what is going for what so you don't have to worry about that sinking feeling when a water's eyes become glazed over. You know that you will get what you ordered. While we were there they were busy revamping some parts of the centre and balcony area so the site of construction work is not too pleasant but that is hardly the café's fault. Try it for breakfast or lunch the next time the mood strikes you!
Justine Fish
Fantastic service! Yummy hash browns!! However, there is big room for improvement especially the outside seating area, but I do see that is in the process. Very nice experience!
Andrew Culbert
Excellent friendly service. Good portions of tasty breakfast and delicious coffee. All in all a pleasant stop for breakfast on a Sunday morning.

Just loved my dining experience @ Cafe D ❤ Been there plenty of times and each time was great. Love the cake and coffee special and the Happy hour cocktails. Will definitely be back soon.❤
What a super find for Sunday breakfast thanks to Zomato. Clean. Friendly. Excellent coffee. Well supervised. Best Eggs Benedict in a long time. Many tempting Portuguese specialities to go back for.

Finally managed to try this restaurant out for breakfast based on all the reviews. A very well setup spot with a delicious menu and great coffee (a necessity for me). They also had a few pastries on display - I ordered a little custard tart which I quite enjoyable. For breakfast I ordered the eggs Benedict and was sadly disappointed. The hollandaise sauce lacked any flavor, the slice of rye bread (which they serve instead of the English muffin) was too thick, not toasted and the paio was fatty. Sadly this was a very bland eggs Benedict. However the restaurant is very promising with friendly and attentive staff and will likely visit again - maybe for lunch instead.
Kate Parker
Chose this restaurant based on the reviews on zomato. We went for a late breakfast and coffee. It's quite tucked away at the back of the centre but the decor and general atmosphere is wonderful. Lots of treats on display and the staff are super friendly. Ordered the eggs Benedict. Food was served quickly and very hot but I was slightly disappointed with my meal. The eggs Benedict was served with rye bread instead of an English muffin and the portion size was far too large. Two large slices of bread was way too much and the hollandaise was quite bland. I wasn't overly impressed. On a positive note, the coffee was fantastic! Also had a custard tart which was very nice but a tad burnt. I think this place has a lot of potential with a few adjustments in the dishes.

Very friendly staff, quick service and awesome hot food ????Manger involved in the service. Everything made fresh from bread to beef patties. Worth a visit.
Megan K
Best eggs Benedict I have had in ages! Absolutely delicious. Generous portions. Cozy little resturant! Will certainly return . The centre is a bit random, but quirky decor and cozy interior make up for it.

Café Duarte...almost hidden there in that corner. This Bistro has more to offer than expected! Went for Dinner with friends, ended up having a few cocktails as well as dessert...and the pasta i had...it was good (a little stingy with their meat though). And the service was excellent! Thanks guys.

Awesome food-Awesome staff-awesome service!

A cosy bistro for a quick lunch and ... poor wifi.

Cafe Duarte is in a shopping centre, and before arriving I associated it with as a place for business lunches and meetings. Instead, this cosy bistro serves more elderlies with wines and smoothies?

The service is spectacular though - the staff is friendly and helpful, but also non-intruding. There are plug points below every table that was very useful to us since I was there to have a working lunch. However, they have their own wifi (Always On is in the area, but too far to be connected to), but the speed is terrible. I ended up using my mobile data instead.

The trinchando pasta I had was Way. Too. Creamy. I never thought imagined too much cream as a possibility, but the pasta was infested with cream and parmasan cheese. It was so rich that I really struggled to finish. On the good side, there are a lot of beverages to choose from, and they're delicious :)

Bottomline: not a place for working lunch.

Pros: friendly service, plug points at all tables
Cons: I only tried one dish, but that was a no.
Karen Nel
My family and I had an awesome supper at Cafe Duarte. We have tried 4 different starters and 5 different mains. Apart from the chicken that was a bit dry, all the food was very tasty. The home made bread is excellent and the service is superb. Real value for money.
Greg Marcia
After reading. many good reviews of this estsblishment I decided to try it out for lunch. I ordetrd the fish of th day and my wife the chicken. The food wad served good and hot ; my fish however was somewhat over cooked and my wifes chicken a bit dry. Service was good and friendly. The coffee is good

I have eaten at this venue a couple of times over the last few months. Usually linked to business lunches. While the environment and wait staff are welcoming and friendly, I find the food to be below par in terms of flavour and texture. I have tried prego's and espetada's ( both chicken and rump) and in all cases the meat has been tough and overdone. The seasonings and flavour were also either under or over done.

We stumbled onto this place almost by mistake, though it really should have been planned as we live so very close. The location within the shopping centre can be off-putting at first, but the staff will put your mind at ease. And the food is absolutely worth it.

I popped into Café Duarte with a friend and didn’t expect it to be so….cosy. The waitress was really sweet and friendly, and the place had a nice feeling to it, especially considering that it was a slow Sunday morning.

Café Duarte seems nothing like its name. You expect Portuguese cuisine but get lots of baked goods and English tea. I ordered the Café D because any signature meal should be the best meal. It was quite a large meal (as the picture shows). It was really well-prepared and the extra avo on the side was fresh and made my heart so happy! I guess the bread was freshly baked in house but it was a bit hard so it didn’t pay it all that much attention.

I’d definitely pop into this café again. It’s really comfortable. The décor is cute and everyone seems very friendly.

The mini cupcakes that came with the bill were a delectable surprise!

What a pleasure to go here, the best of all is that the staff there are excellent, and they are happy. What a difference that makes, and it means the manager or owner is so good. The food is great too, and reasonably priced. I will be back!

Divine food. Love the desserts. The manager and staff are very friendly. Wonderful cosy restaurant.

Got the take away red velvet cupcakes. Waitress smiled and greeted me within less than a minute and the service was fast and efficient. The red velvet cupcakes were probably the best I've ever had - not too sweet and out of this world delicious!!! Plus at only R12 each you can have 2nds and 3rds!

Service was slow, food very average, potatoes were not cooked and the wine selection small. The only thing going for it was the friendly waiter. This is not a restaurant rather a shopping centre cafe. Very disappointing.

Excellent spicy prawns and best pasteis de nata in town!

I loooooove this restaurant. The only place in Johannesburg where you get your food prepared fresh and from scratch. The entire menu is amazing and the cocktails are divine. I have brought 4 people on different occasions to join me in sampling their wares and they have all been impressed. When I cannot go to the restaurant I order my meals there and get them picked up. I love the little velvet cupcake that comes with your bill, A great and unique touch. i would recommend the grilled chicken salad with prego sauce...yum yum yummy!!

We have been there a few times and their food is fresh and very tasty !! Highly recommend the place.

They have the best Mushroom Burger in the world. It seems to get better every time!

Excellent food (try the prawn starter 5 stars) and attentive service.

You could easily walk past the unassuming door of this smallish restaurant, in the corner as go to the ATM or elevator. You would make a big mistake if you did. This is a superb place. Charming and efficiently run, every course was quite excellent.

The cuisine is creative, fresh, intuitive... and a genuine pleasure for the eyes as well as the palate. ambience great. Their food is presented beautifully. Wine list not bad. Could use single malt Scotch. The service was the way I like it: no pretention, very delightful and knowledge of their products.

Plus they offer free wifi which is one the fastest wifi I've ever used in a restaurant (another reason why I keep going back). Shaun gets special mention for making sure that their wifi is performing to its best.

Super for friends, business and special occasions. Very fresh food. I hope with time you will be braver and experiment more by introducing new dishes.

An absolute must try for newcomers... and then must go back!!!

twitter: @Reagoikanya

I went for a romantic dinner with my fiance. With reviews I had seen, it had some pretty big shoes to fill. The location was not what I would have expected, and so I was very surprised to find such a fantastic experience nestled away in a shopping centre.

Upon arrival, I was greeted with warmth and a relaxed atmosphere. The waitress was friendly and attentive, while the manager took a genuine interest in our wellbeing.
We both went for seafood - I had prawns while my fiance had a seafood pasta. I can honestly say that it is the food that sets this restaurant apart from anything else. The meal was perfect. The wine selection was limited, but of decent quality and value.

We drove a fair way to see if this restaurant was really as good as its reviews... They now have a new regular despite the distance.

Really well done and thank you for a fantastic night.

We had the most delicious lunch on Sunday and will most definitely return to Cafe D to sample more dishes.

We shared a portion of trinchado and a salad to start followed by pasta (freshly prepared pasta I might add), chicken and beef Pregos.

The service was great and the staff very friendly. I liked the contemporary decor yet the setting (in the passage of a shopping centre) was not ideal, we prefer sitting outside on a warm summers day.

To sum it up: a modern and trendy Portuguese bistro that serves a diverse choice of your favorite comfort foods

Really nice place to have a balanced meal. Will definitely be returning with my girlfriend.

What a gem, tucked away, and good wholesome homemade Portuguese food.. love this place.

Always enjoy the pasta. But it sometimes gets a bit noisy. Selection of "background music" can be improved and should not interfere with one's conversation!

Never heard of the place before. Its amazing some of the little gems you find on and in the least expected cases and I would like to thank Groupon for finding this one for me.

Hidden in the back corner of one of the oh so many shopping centres springing up all over. It may be small but the atmosphere, staff and owner all make up for that in buckets. We decided to go for a mixed starter of Calamari Livers and Trinchado. Each taste left me wanting more and would have been perfect as a main meal.

Thank God they weren't because the main meals we chose, the Prawns and the Cafe D steak, were absolutely delicious.
Each taste was a delight to my taste buds. Loved the open kitchen and the Owner may not have had a smile on his face but you could see that He thoroughly loved cooking each meal that he sent out. The staff and manager were all pleasant and efficient.

I would definitely recommend this bistro for a lunch for two and will Definitely go back again.

was lovely.... small and quaint. atmosphere is inviting and relaxing. food is divine!!!! Highly satisfied!!

The waiter was very engaging...
Felt like we were in our home having dinner.
The manager was friendly.
A very homey place with character and inviting modern decor.
We were there quite late on a thursday night and they did not rush us once, we were relaxed the whole time.
We wanted a specific drink, and they went out of their way to find the recipe to make me this drink....

Will definitely go there again!!

Great restaurant and I will definitely go there again! Relaxing atmosphere with good food and delicious cupcakes.

Small neighbourhood restaurant with a very friendly vibe and continuous huge smiles from the waitresses. We shared chicken livers peri peri which was done a little differently from what I am used to (no cream) but was very tasty and I would definately order it again. Mains were Cafe D Fillet with Mussels - which was excellent and Pork Fillet - which was a tad dry, so hubby happily dipped in my sauce!!!
As we left a batch of Natas had just been taken out of the oven and we couldn't resist buying a few which we had at home with coffee - after having waited the required amount of time for them to cool down. Beautiful consistency but just a little sweet for my liking.

Excellent service and great atmosphere, chic design and unique meals with cupcakes for every occasion

What a fantastic surprise!

This is such a quaint place to enjoy a meal any time of the day. The decor is breathtaking and will give your eyes a feast to look at.

Also used a voucher but can assure you that we will be going back for more. The prices are extremely reasonable- quite a bargain if you take into consideration what other places charge for similar meals. The food is of superior quality and highly enjoyable.
What we enjoyed most was the small things that the staff do to make themselves distinct...such as instead of getting those horrible tasting mints when receiving the bill, they bring each customer the cutest little red velvet cupcake...almost the size of a usual mint.

We left there feeling highly impressed with our new spot finding....It is HIGHLY recommended!!

An excellent Portuguese Bistro.

Their meals are packed with flavour and the Red Velvet cupcakes are worth the visit by themselves!

Well recommended!

This is a hidden little GEM and when i mean hidden i mean hidden.

You don't expect to find a restaurant like this in a shopping center like this but it is well worth taking the time to visit this spot.

Food is fantastic with a Portuguese flair and portions are great, its like they have taken a page from a high end Bistro and implemented the processes there. From what i gather everything is made from scratch, bread, rolls, cupcakes and all from fresh ingredients.

Do yourself a favor if your in the area or even if you're not...

Superb food with attention to detail on each dish. Very friendly and professional staff, and fantastic decor making the restaurant just that little bit more special. The Cafe D fillet is an interesting but very tasty dish, and together with the chocolate mousse for dessert, you will not be disappointed.

The wine list could use a bit more variety, but the cocktail menu should keep you happy, particularly on weekdays, when the cocktail hour special(two for one) is available.

I would certainly recommend Cafe Duarte to anyone in the area.

I was so surprised by this restaurant.

I had been gifted a voucher for a meal for two here, and was not too excited about going, but needed the free meal.

As soon as we walked in, we received phenomenal, personal service. The restaurant is small, but a well-planned layout and beautiful decor make it seem much bigger than it is.

We had Prawn Rissoles to start - delicious, fresh, crispy, well-filled, and authentic.

For our mains, we had the Cafe D Fillet and the Cafe D Steak. The fillet was a little too done (our waiter was very concerned about this, and we did not mention it) but so incredibly delicious and tender that we decided not to say a word. The mussels on top were divine. The vegetables were generous and perfectly done - no sweet marinade, just crispy, delicious veg. My steak was perfectly done, a great cut, and my egg on top was also perfect. The sauces that accompanied our steaks were phenomenal. The chips were perfect.

We could not manage dessert, but the coffee was wonderful, and the accompanying biscuit was a great touch.

Not haute cuisine, but a damn sight better than the many take-away places downstairs.
