Delicious lunch and great service in a beautiful setting. Well worth a stop.
We stopped at Nostalgie when visiting Oudtshoorn on the way to Knysna. It came highly recommended for dinner by our hotel, so we thought we’d give it a visit. We were glad that we made a reservation, as they were fully booked the evening we visited.
We arrived at the restaurant and we were seated and given the menus. The restaurant is quaint and charming, and although not my usual cup of tea, we embraced the authenticity of it and it’s surroundings. Xavier was our waiter, and he was nothing short of delightful. He was efficient, friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
Oudtshoorn is famous for its Ostrich farming, so we were intrigued to try it at Nostalgie. We started with the Chicken Livers, which were really delicious and flavoursome. We both went for the Ostrich Steak, which was very tasty. I would say it’s similar to a very lean Fillet Steak, but with a deeper flavour. The dish came with a selection of side dishes and some excellent sauces too. It was very rich so we didn’t have room for desert, but they also sounded very good.
Overall, we had a great time at Nostalgie, and it was incredibly good value. There were lots of tourists as well as locals, and it’s a clear sign that Nostalgie does what it does very well. If visiting Oudtshoorn, you’ve certainly got to stop for lunch or dinner at Nostalgie.
Very nice restaurante in Oudtshoorn. There is a variety of options and different ways to try ostrich. I had the grilled fillet and it was amazing, cooked at perfection. Very nice detail when bringing the bill with cookies for the table.
Arrived 10 minutes before loadshedding (planned power outage) and expected to be affected, but were pleasantly surprised. Exceptional service and exceptional food made this the best restaurant experience of our 3 week trip - that included some high end dining in big cities. The ostrich carpacio, baked camembert, and Dukka with olive oil and balsamic starters were exceptional and set the tone, paired with a great Merlot from the decent (and affordable) winelist... Ostrich shank. ostrich fillet and ostrich stroganoff main courses were to die for - and even the 3 veggie sides were exceptional, with the baked pumpkin worthy of its own dish. Portions were very generous and we couldn't make room for any desserts. but ended the night with great coffee.
Highly recommended and we wish we could stay another week to sample more!
Great food. Highly recommend. Friendly staff. Thank you. Will definitely visit again
Amazing wholesome food, loved everything. Reminded me of my grandmother's food
It's definitely a place to visit
We had such a special family meal on our recent visit to Oudtshoorn. Amazing food with generous portions, giving you a genuine taste of SA. The milk tart was the best I've ever had. Quirky decorations and lighting creates a warm atmosphere, and the service was really friendly- they even gave us a free starter! So pleased that we picked this spot.
After a long and exciting day, our host recommended the "Nostalgie". I've never eaten ostrich before and what can I say? It was a revelation! Both the fillet and the dessert were simply outstanding! If you come to Oudtshoorn, be sure to visit this wonderful restaurant and let yourself be enchanted by the local cuisine.
We had a one night stay in Oudtshoorn and decided to try this little gem for dinner and we were not disappointed 😊 Everything from the location, the service and the food was fantastic. Will definitely visit again when in town.
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere on the inside as well as outside. The food is outstanding and there is a wide variety of choices available on the menu. They have a range of vegetarian options available. They serve wholesome food that is presented very nicely. They also have a range of jams and other confectionery for sale in store as well as ready-made meals ready to make/bake at home.
