What a magical spot recommended by one of the locals. Looking from the main road you will not expect the hidden garden at the back. Our son Liam immediately noticed the back door that opened up onto an amazing veggie garden. Quality food. Locals hang out. Fabulous coffee.
What a great discovery in the town of McGregor. Such a unique experience. We only had time for breakfast on a Sunday. Beautifully baked sour dough breads waited for us upon entry. A unique selection of options was available for breakfast. I requested a personalized breakfast, and the kitchen and staff allowed for this. It was one of the best breakfast experiences I have had. The staff members are great, attentive, and helpful at all times. Make sure you visit. I have since learned that there is an entire garden outside to explore. Well recommended.
Lovely breakfast with very tasty mushrooms and fresh pesto. Great to hear the croissants were homemade. Ours were were slightly burnt, but still delicious.
Baguette, cheese and marmelade was delicious.
Friendly attentive owners. Reasonably priced.
Beautiful garden out back.
In planning our trip to McGregor, this was the first place we saved because of all the positive reviews, and now I’m adding mine to the hype as well. I don’t think they have a set menu, rather a couple of items available on that day only so I suspect no return visit will ever be the same. Although I craved a traditional breakfast, what I got was infinitely better. The list of ingredients is more than I can remember but the flavours compliment each other beautifully. Sitting outside in the garden, you can’t be blamed for wondering if it can get any better than that.

Experience par excellence!!
McGregor is a sleepy little town on a weekday morning but 51 is a good place to get your caffeine kick and a delicious build-your-own breakfast. As you sit down to a cup of good, strong coffee - inside, outback or on the stoep - the locals pop in and out and everyone is greeted by name. The items on the chalkboard might seem ordinary but when they arrive you’ll realize everything is V2.0 - mushrooms aren’t only mushrooms, spinach isn’t just spinach - and whatever combo you create is bound to be delicious.
Great food, but definitely not Thai. It is a mix of Southeast Asia tastes. Definitely it is a must in McGregor.
By far the best restaurant in McGregor!
The highlight of our long weekend in McGregor - a pity we only discovered it when we stopped for breakfast on our way home! Had we been there earlier during the weekend, we would most definitely have visited more than once.
Brilliant atmosphere, stylish uncluttered decor. The bit of the kitchen that is visible is spotless and neatly organised. The backyard is beautiful if you choose to sit there. As it was a cold morning, we sat inside near the fireplace. The coffee and fresh orange juice was perfect. The service was great, friendly waiter with attention to detail.
But the food, oh my goodness! We had the two breakfast options. It was unique, delicious, wonderful tasty, so different from the normal breakfast grub. The menu is very limited, but don't let that fool you. Everything is made with care from the freshest ingredients.
We agreed on our way home that 51 would warrant driving to McGregor if ever we are in the vicinity again.
Recommended by our local hosts, and we were not disappointed! Beautiful flavour combinations and excellent bread, all self made. Simple, but delicious menu. Lovely pastries too. Very friendly and courteous hosts who clearly have a passion for what they do. Great Coffee. Spotless kitchen. Interesting "no-tipping" policy in lieu of donations to animal welfare, which makes their pricing very generous, and speaks volumes about the owners. The kind of bistro/deli everybody wishes they had around the corner. Will visit again in a heartbeat and highly recommend to anybody.
