Its not everyday you find a little gem close to home that prepares really good food.
I've been looking for a durban chow spot in JHB for a while and although some might say try fordsburg i can say i have and besides the famous akhalwaya's there is not really a place with real durban food, as a matter of fact even akhalwaya's doesn't serve a delicious durban mutton bunny, or that amazing breyani which might i add is on special every friday.
Now not having a card machine might seem like an inconvenience but seriously, we are living in the 20th century. we have technologically advanced options that don't require too much brain power. I mean i forgot about the lack of a card machine and within 5mins i had zapper downloaded and ready on my phone and then it took me 20 seconds to pay. This is both really awesome and scary, because it is so easy to pay now and scary because ummm Its waaaay to easy to pay now.
The food?
Well after trying alot from the menu i must say everything is a winner. If you are feeling for a steak roll special well look no further, their rolls are all great, i would like to see bigger rolls as they may seem a bit small and you wonder to yourself how tey fit all these chips and steak on this roll, but its fresh and absolutely delicious.
Curry? DUUUH, AMAZING. not much i can say more than that. Whether you go bunny or rice or roti, it is a fantastic experience.
and then my friday special breyani. for the loooow price of R40 you get the biggest portion of breyani ever made. Now i must say 2 pieces of chicken and 1, 2 potatoes seems a bit sad in this mountain of rice, but you are forgetting this is costing you R40 and if you were to dish up a portion once home you would realise how insane it is that you have so much left over. I am still unable to finish this in one sitting.
It is delicious and just tastes like better days.
In all if you are feeling for some durban memories, and the taste of happiness. this is the place to be.
Food is always freshly prepared, don't mind the waiting. Keep it up uncle Raj and Family . You will definitely go a long way with the service you give your customers.
The food was simply amazing. Been looking for a great place that sells awesome bunny chows and this hit the spot. Thank you Shezaam for your friendliness and bringing my takeaway to the car. Highly recommend this place for authentic Indian food.
Had the mutton breyani and it was really good. Check out the classy presentation in my pics! Nice layered flavours, the fragrant rice and lentils were generously laced with soft and tender chunky pieces of meat. Was there for an early lunch, but as the plate serving was so large, I could not finish it - and even skipped supper later 😉.
I loved every moment, they have that homely hospitality, it's that Durban style kind of cooking by the owners, Uncle and Aunt. I would recommend this place to everyone who has a good pallet for good food. If you are looking for a place to help satisfy your Indian craving, you have come to the right place!
Finally tried the curry from eastern Cafe after driving past it multiple times, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised, I had a beef curry and it was super tasty, real Durban flavor, and luckily I had it on a Wednesday and it was the special for the day. Definitely will be trying other dishes from eastern Cafe. Their prices are very reasonable aswell.

If you looking for a proper durban curry in the south of jhb ,this is ur place! .....I tried the mutton curry and roti and kids had the butter chicken And on both the Portions size was decent and fresh👍 can't wait to try the other curries ..

I am formally from Kzn and haven't had a good bunny in a while...Just ordered some quater mutton bunny's for my colleagues and I for the 1st time at "Eastern Cafe"...& I must say that was flippen good! Everybody enjoyed it and cannot stop raving about how good the food was....worth every dime! Will definitely recommend and be back for more soon!
