Review The Tap House - Johannesburg

Service is very friendly and the music and food is great. Lovely to sit outside and have a beer on sunny days. They also have a great selection of beer on tap. The vegetarian burger was a bit disappointing and bland.
Cindy Carrick
The barman were so welcoming The music great and atmosphere. Domt like that beggars come in to make you feel uncomfortable I feel for them really do but they drunk when they ask for money. Only put off

So if you're expecting a big beer experience with a large selection of beer on tap and you're now going to taste beer from around the country like the name suggests - this isn't it. However, the service was good and the food was delicious. With my friends we experienced the chicken wings, chicken strips and their burgers. All of which were delicious, served on warm plates and presented very well. The rugby was being shown on many TV screens while we were there too. So in summary, a nice bar in parkhurst with good food not specialising in on tap beer.

Nice little gastro pub. Very good burgers great size on the patties. Chilled ambiance. Outside section is street side so you get to see all the cars and people going by. Only thing is the hawkers are right there too trying to sell you stuff or beg for money.

I rate they have the best burgers on 4th Avenue. Better than Hudsons! Andrew and his staff are always friendly and they have great service. If you enjoy watching sport this is a great little pub for that. Around 21:00 - 22:00 the duke box is switched on and the place gets pretty full.
Candice Jane Woolway
Intimate bar, excellent service with a smile and delious pub food. Highly recommend the 'amaze balls' off the street food menu. You won't be disappointed! There is a duke box inside and there is always a vibe.
Anel Kirstein
Neighbourhood haunt for relaxed music and shooting pool. A calm before the storm of a bigger night out. Relaxed outside area, where older people (...like 40 year old me) can hear the storytelling without evoking the skill of lip-reading
Dale Landsberg
Intimate setting, wide range of drinks from whiskeys to wine to craft beers. It is small so when it is busy it gets quite crowded. But other than that a good clean setting.

Good vibes. Good music. The staff is very friendly and professional. Everyone seemed to be having a good time there.

Great local pub with underrated food. The waiters are friendly and well trained. The jukebox gets switched on around 22:00 and keeps going well into the night.
Laura Neto
Always a good vibe! The staff are friendly! The bathrooms were surprisingly clean also! Always glad to drop in when in the area!

Great beer the gents at the bar where spot on.. Different beers really loved the special new local brands
Aldo Canosci
Great place to hang out and have a beer or two. Staff always really friendly and I have had some really good meals too.
Glen Crankshaw
First class food (as always) at very reasonable prices. Excellent, courteous staff. My favourite "go to place" for for a meal.
Michael Bezuidenhout
Lovely little place on the strip 4th ave Parkhurst bustling with activity and great atmosphere also well priced

This is one of the best restaurants in Parkhurst with a lot range of craft beers 🍺, so if you into craft this is the best place to visit when you in the erea

This was certainly not the highlight of 2018.

Service 2 stars the waiters were more interested in the soccer than us

Atmosphere 2 stars not bad ambience and a good place to watch the game

Food 2 star. The squid heads where soggy and tasteless, the chicken fingers lacked salt and the chicken pine burger I ordered came with a beef patty which had to be sent back. Their traditional burger is tasty and the chips are good

Overall I’m not in a hurry to return

The bartender was super friendly. Lovely place for drinks with friends after work. Didn't try the food as it was a short visit. It was pretty empty but it was nice just chilling
Anny
Great food, not so great service from one waiter in particular, in more instances than one. It’s really enough to make me avoid the place altogether.
Akash
Really friendly staff but not the best food even for a pub. Drinks are well priced for the area. Tried the amaze ball starter and it was tasteless.

I felt like a good burger and onion rings and that's what I got. The service is a bit slow, but friendly and the setting is nice and intimate. Definitely one of the top burger spots in Jo'burg if you're not into franchises like me.

We didn't plan to spend our evening at The Taphouse, but here we are. The team was awesome and assured us that we will have a great time. Service was prompt, vibe was great. We didn't eat here, but we did have cold beer, lots of shooters and Arsenal won their 13th FA Cup

May 13 evening: We struggled a lot to find this place based on directions from #Zomato. As per that, this place is on crossroads of 4th avenue and 13th street. However, it is between 6th and 7th street. We walked up and down on the 4th avenue. Finally, we find the place. The place is opposite Jolly roger which seemed to be more happening at that time. We reach to find lot of people from our office. Surprsingly, there was no music playing inside. The place is dimly lit and except for the lack of music, a good place to hang out. Ordering was a bit difficult as there was no one to take our orders and it took time to get our beers. Ordered for the blue mushroom burger which comes with hand made fries. The burger tasted good. Among non veg, ordered the piggly pot - assortment of finger foods. A bit surprised at lack of options for finger foods. We finished our beers and moved to another place on Friday night.

Awesome pub. Delicious burger and really good wedges.

Great vibe and service, perfect place to watch the football.

A good place to go if you want a bit more chilled scene than the places next door. We especially go here later in the evening to unwind and chat a bit without the loud music. They have a good variety of beer as well and has a good beer house feel on it.
Smelly Celly
Cool sidewalk spot in Parkhurst opposite Jolly Rogers. They have a decent selection of craft beer on tap, which is half price on a Wednesday! On a Thursday they offer 30% off their streetfood section on the menu. In the image you'll see we had the jalapeño poppers (J Bombs) and the crumbed milk stout risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella, cheddar and pepperdews served with a curry sauce (they're called Amazeballs and they are pretty amaze). Beer gets a thumbs up, service gets a thumbs up, food seems great but I really didn't try enough to judge accurately. Just needs a bit of music outside :)

Excellent as a local pub. Friendly, knowledgeable waiters and excellent pub food. It's not intended to be a fine dining establishment - more like Cheers, friendly and relaxed.

I went to The Taphouse on a Saturday night with some friends. It was a good night out, but the only way I could describe The Taphouse is as average. Only went for drinks though, but I'd definitely consider going back for food!
Jolene
A few of my friends wanted to come here for drinks, but I was pretty underwhelmed. Compared to all the other great places in Parkhurst, The Taphouse did not stand out for me at all. I suppose it's fine for people who just want to grab a beer and go. Probably won't hurry back any time soon.
Jonathan Starmer
Although the menu looked interesting the food left a little to be desired. Portions were small for the price and was generally a luck luster lunch.

Went to the taphouse with a group of friends for a few drinks... Has a nice atmosphere and despite the bar area being pretty full the service was great .
They have a good selection of drinks and staff are very friendly.

A great little neighborhood pub where the locals gather to watch soccer. For a pub the grub is actually very good although the tables and floors were dirty & grimly. We sat outside across from other pubs and the whole area was quite vibey for a Sunday afternoon. Not a destination pub but one which is clearly a favourite with the locals.
Francesca Conradie
This is the best local around. Good vibe good food and the best service Moses runs a tight ship. This is the place. A really. Good jol

Stopped by The Taphouse for some drinks and a few bites. It's a very laid back pub kind of vibe which I enjoyed.

Our waiter was lovely and made great recommendations starting off with the gin and tonic drink that I really enjoyed. The gin is produced locally and not a very well known brand. I just can't remember the name of it.

To eat, we tried the buffalo wings, onions rings, crispy squid heads and a food basket. Everything was simple, delicious and full of flavour and unpretentious.

I will definitely be back :)

I've been to Taphouse on a few occasions now, and they are just awesome. The food is really good, and the salads are delicious, specially the chicken and halloumi salad. The bar food is also really good, and alot better quality than the typical service associated with "bar food". But on the most recent trip to The Taphouse, my faith in humanity was restored after a slightly drunken evening... After a friend dropped his phone on the floor, and back tracking our night, we called and the staff had picked it up and kept it safe. And on arrival, the manager was waiting with the phone still safely kept, and returned to the rightful owner. This is just proof that the staff are really decent, super friendly and good, hard working men. Will definitely be back time and time again. And recommend it to pretty much anyone, for any occasion.

A place to find your friends post work or to catch a game while picking up a pint of decent beer and pub grub at its best. A real haven when watching an important game as the atmosphere is fantastic. Weekends are busy. Their "Peri Peri Hot Chick" just falls off the bone and not so hot that it can't be enjoyed with a salad. Totally scrumptious. Your pub classics of burgers, pot pies, fish & chips, baskets and boards are like old friends and not to forget the vegetarians, there are a few dishes on offer. A place recommended for a pub night out!

Lovely new 'pub' in the Parkhurst strip. Generally you can get a table any time you go, and given the layout, you have a great view of the big TV for sports viewing. You can also sit outside if you choose and order some good 'pub-grub' from their menu. Slightly overpriced for what you get, but all meals I have had I have enjoyed. Their menu seems to be undergoing a changes quite often, but overall good food. Good selection of beers on tap as well.

The Taproom is a quaint pub on the Parkhurst 4th Avenue strip, serving cold beers and pub food. It does not pretend to be more than this...and thankfully it requires nothing more to tick all of the boxes. We struck it lucky on a Tuesday 1/2 price burger night, which is ridiculous value for money and the burgers were pretty decent!

What a great addition to 4th Avenue Parkhurst, just what we needed. I'm not sure whether to call this a restaurant or a bar, the food is certainly better than one would expect at a bar. The hamburgers are the best I've had in Johannesburg. The staff are very friendly and the vibe is very relaxed. Everybody at our table thoroughly enjoyed their food and we have all vowed to return. Keep up the good work.
Russell
Best burgers in Johannesburg. Had the Wholehog burger, delicious. Good selection of craft beer. Good service, very friendly. Great atmosphere.

The Taphouse is a grotty bar with sub standard pub grub. The service is good and the beer selection is not bad but the atmosphere is dreadful and the food is awful. The cardboard squid was not offset by the cheap salad. Everyone I was with looked a little horrified at what they were presented with. This is grotty pub grub disguised as artisanal food. Avoid, it's gross and overpriced.
Simon
In my opinion, I think they were a little overpriced for my taste. For example, I ordered a bar snack called "Chicken Fingers" which goes for R67. See picture for what I got - I got exactly 2 onion rings, probably 8 wedges and a modest portion of fried chicken. I know that this is not a McDonalds but I thought pub food was going to be cheap?

The waiters had a good attitude and pleasant disposition but I do think that they need to remember their customers orders. I had to ask a couple of times for my drink on a really hot day and I had to ask a couple of times again for the bill.

We've been talking about trying out this new pub on 4th Avenue, Parkhurst and got a chance when we took friends who were in SA for the weekend. All I can say is that this place was a good choice. The staff were attentive and the bar had a wide array of drinks. We got a table outside, enjoyed our drinks and soaked up the vibe of the area. Will definetly be going again

Visited The Taphouse after dinner, and before we hit Jolly's.

It wasn't as busy as I thought it would be, but we filled the place up nicely. They have a wide range of drinks and beers available and I also saw a specials board with food options, that I will try out next time.

It was a fun pre-shrunk start to the evening - and they have great bartenders and waiters.
MJ
Amazing! one of the best burgers i have ever had in my life. Cooked to perfection. Buffalo wings as a starter were great. Also situated at a vibey spot

I have always found Parkhurst to be very pretentious, the restaurants are too crowded and over priced for the service and meals served. We drove past and noticed a new bar on 4th, and finally tried it last week. We were very greeted by a waiter by the door and shown to our seats. The variety of craft beer intrigued us. We received our drinks promptly and we greeted by the manager and owner during our stay. We unfortunately did not have the time to order food, but they seem to have a good range of pub meals and great specials during the week. It was very refreshing to have good service and friendly faces on 4th. We will definitely be back for more.

Since I am familiar with the Taphouse in La Lucia - imagine my excitement when I saw the signage in Parkhurst !!
They especially opened early for us !!
We have eaten :
JBombs
Amaze Balls as starters
As a main we shared the 250g fillet with FRESH vegetables !!
Am so happy this cutie pub is in my hood !
The friendly owner really made my day 🍻

If you're looking for a friendly neighborhood pub with sophisticated edge, The Taphouse is awesome! I'm not really a pub-crawler, but having tried Taphouse 3 months ago, I have been back weekly! The waiters are fast and extra friendly, and knew my name by the 3rd visit and the owners are hands-on and always there. I like that it's not a huge establishment and that inside is non-smoking. The food is great and the drinks reasonably priced. Taphouse is seeing more of me than I myself expected! Bravo!!!

Amazeballs are a must try!!!! Awesome place with great staff and really awesome traditional pub food. Never mind value for money. Highly recommended...

I have consistently had delicious meals at the Taphouse on 4th. Lovely ambiance and very friendly staff, who always look pleased to see my husband and I. The Ginger Beer on tap is a hit for me. A classy gastro style pub, which is a welcome addition to Parkhurst, and thank you Moses for being such a wonderful and caring Manager.

To say our evening was disappointing would be an understatement. As a new pub/restaurant in parkhurst, nestled amongst strong competition like Jolly Cool and Jolly Rogers, you'd expect this place to shoot the lights out. Not quite so. The waiters were too occupied by the soccer to service us, we had to ask numerous times for drinks or for our table to be cleared, we eventually even took to clearing up our own table. It has to be asked, where was the manager? The food was brown, greasy, tasteless and in fact just gross. Take a look at the picture yourself and let me know if you can decipher what food is which...
Gabriela Limberis
One of the worst service and food experiences. Upon arrival no drinks were offered to us- we waited approximately 45 minutes before we called a waiter to take our drinks order. The waiters were more concerned about watching the soccer than being attentive. Needless to say we eventually cleared our own table after the meal was over.
In terms of the food, we ordered lots of the bites. All served with sweet processed cheese melted on top. Portions were expensive for the amount served.
If it wasn't for the great company, it would have been an awful night.Julia Kaleta

This new little watering hole was the location of choice for a night of Rugby World Cup viewing. The TV screens were ample, the staff enthusiastic and the vibe was perfect. The drinks were also great, with our waiter telling us "we don't have a drinks menu, just tell me what you want and we will probably have it!" The food, unfortunately, was quite poor. We were a table of 8, eating a variety of meals from burgers to salads to poppers, but with an average "Zomato Score" of only 2! The meals just seemed to be a bit carelessly prepared - with burnt cheese on burgers and over cooked meat. May have just been an "off night" with the large crowd, but fun nonetheless.

Wow!!! What a great night!!! Went to Taphouse to celebrate an awesome friends birthday and was blown away by the delicious food, desserts, great beer and vibey atmosphere! Was so good! Hmm those bunny chows and malva pudding! Yum!
Cosima Jutz
Taphouse is honestly one of the nicest pubs I've been to in a while! The waiters were super friendly and accommodating. The platters we received were specially made for a birthday and the food was absolutely divine! Would highly recommend to my friends.
Adele Street
We were there on wednesday night for a friends birthday, it was honestly one of the best places I have been to. The service was great, the waiters were very attentative and very friendly. The food was absolutely fantastic, the Chef was kind enough to design a special menu with the birthday girl, again going the extra mile to make everyone happy!! Really great ambience would definitely recommend it to all my friends!!
Charlotte J-R
We asked the chef to compose us diverse snack platters for a birthday party, we were spoilt with mini bunny chows, mini beef wellingtons, delicious piggly wigglys and succulent kebabs. The service is wonderful and efficient and I would recommend Tap House to anyone looking for a small venue with so much heart. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful birthday!

We were treated so well at Taphouse. The beer was flowing and the food was superb. Highly recommended, especially for sport. The bar area is set up so that people can move around freely and everyone has a good view of the big screen (big bonus for the RWC).
Princess Bubblegum
At first I thought that this place might be a bit over priced. The bar menu is pretty expensive for the portion size, but the food is so fresh and delicious, that we will be going back time and time again. The jalapeño poppers are great and the fillet very well made. Yay for a new pub in parkhurst!
Bridget
Gastropub style food. Beer on tap. An English pub? In parkhurst? Hooray for the Taphouse... We had a late Sunday lunch there and it was fabulous! I had a beef and stout pie (don't tell the diet) and it was super delicious! Everyone enjoyed their food, there was a good range of beers on tap, and the service was good. So if you're looking for a English pub vibe with a south African feel, take yourself to the Taphouse...

Went for drinks and dinner with a couple of friends on a Friday night. The atmosphere was great, the service was excellent - waiter was super friendly and attentive.

The food was delicious. I had the plain beef burger and it was the best beer I've had...not in years but ever. The patty had a loose texture and was amazingly juicy and perfectly caramelized. The bun was crispy on the outside and soft inside...yummmm!! The burger was served with super crispy and fluffy potato wedges with aioli.

They also have craft beers on tap and a couple flat screens to watch the sport. There's not much more you could ask of a pub/restaurant in my opinion.
Carolyn Purdy
Great atmosphere & set up! Perfect for the after work drinks and to unwind from a busy day with friends. Really reminds you of an English pub style also perfect setting watching the nightlife of Parkhurst wander past you. Highly recommended! Still need to try the food.
Julie Farrell
A cool spot in Parkhurst but quite over rated.. Found their menu rather confusing / uninformative, for instance they only mention the price of bottled wine bit per glass. We ordered a calamari basket and got a really small portion of calamari however it was really delicious.. Service is really friendly and the location is lovely for a casual evening drink.

This week we tried Taphouse for a chilled evening and great food. We, okay mostly me, overloaded on carbs until I was in a mini food coma but my god was it worth it! The burgers are clearly made out of good quality mince and the toppings are delicious. The chips/wedges hit the spot, as did the big onion rings with. delicious mayo sauce on the side. At nearly R100 a burger, it's not cheap, but I can understand the prices considering the quality of the food.

Our waiter was lovely, funny and smart. He definitely added to our evening.

Overall, a really enjoyable evening and I will certainly be back.
Tracy Morison
Good service & posh pub grub. The food was tasty & not unreasonably priced. The space has a nice feel; a pity about the bathrooms though (which are shared with the pub next door). A pleasant evening.
Tony White
Great place to watch sport and enjoy really good pub fare. Really good burgers and the wedges were great. Good range of beers including craft. Service was great and we had a really good humored waiter. well done Moses. will be back for more.
Shaun Naggan
My friend Nick and I went together with his housemate for a drink at taphouse. I had been to the Jolly Roger across the road the night before and Dave had recommended taphouse to me.

There is a fairly good selection of craft beer including SAB's attempt. Sampled the cream ale from their selection and have to say that I am impressed. Nick suggested the chocolate milk stout but they didn't have any. Had a plate of potato wedges which weren't as spiced as I would have preferred, however they still went down a treat.

Taphouse is not the cheapest bar in parkhurst but makes a great addition. I will be back.
Rich Torlage
Really decent pub grub. Recommend the chicken pie and Marrakech burger. A great places catch up with mates over some beers. The staff and manager were really attentive.

We went for dinner here on Friday evening. We made the mistake of not booking, thinking that by going early and the fact that the restaurant is pretty new we would easily get a table. We were wrong, it was super busy, the only table we could get was outside so we were really cold. The manager and waiter did try find us place inside but it was just too busy. My boyfriend had the eisbein, which he didn't really enjoy. The taste was ok, but it wasn't falling off the bone as it should and it definitely wasn't the 1kg it was advertised to be. The upside to his meal was the delicious mash that came with it. I had the chicken cordon bleu which was really tasty. The service was good. Would like to go back to try the pub menu
Katherine
We visited The Taphouse during Christmas in July in Parkhurst. I hadn't heard of it until someone in our party made the booking so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's got a bit of an English pub feel, which I enjoyed. The restaurant was busy and we were a big table but the service was good and the food came quickly. The menu had so many good options on it but on the waiter's recommendation I went for the chicken and mushroom pot pie, and I wasn't disappointed! It was massive and had a generous pastry top. Delicious! Everybody else's food looked good too. We were quite rushed as we wanted to do some night shopping before the shops closed, so I'll definitely be back for more of a chilled meal and to enjoy the pub/ restaurant more.

This place is awesome! We were 18 people and service was great. They accommodated us even though the table got so big that we cut off the passage way. Food was yumm. I had the fish and chips and I honestly wouldn't have minded a second portion. Best part...the fish did not have skin for those who are picky. Great night out! Friendly staff...owner...manager...and chef. Keep it up!
