Review Ocean Basket Rosebank - Johannesburg

Amanda Manyatshe
Had a craving. Calamari. Our waitress was amazing and understood the assignment. Everything came at once as it was ready as I was starving!!!! Yoh. Famished I tell you. Our waitress was friendly, efficient, reliable ...didn't hang around just when we needed service she was there. Great mom daughter date. Thank you! Definitely going back again!

Great place to get your seafood fix! Big on variety as well as the food portions. Reasonably priced and the seafood is fresh! Clean and comfortable place to dine at, with friendly staff ready to provide recommendations as required.

Good seafood options, but not too many for vegetarians; haloomi cheese and salad was good. People running and serving ate great. Good Ambience.

Had a sushi lunch with some friends and our waiter was really friendly and attended to us even though we waited quite a while for the food to arrive. We ordered platters to share because honestly their prices are a little high for their sushi options. The sushi itself was great but not the best I've had. The overall experience was good though.

This place is a paradise for fish lovers! My favourite dish is definitely a big portion of salmon with fried calamaris and prawns. The prices are very affodable for such huge portions. Also they have some really delicious coctails and cider you can order in addition to your meal! 😉👍🏾

New location, very comfortable, excellent decor, bright and upmarket good service, food tasty, management and staff friendly and accommodating overall very good experience and well worth the visit! Enjoy

Had a great experience at Ocean Basket Rosebank on a busy Saturday evening. The waiter was attentive and portion sizes were very good. This branch has been under the same management for many years and the food, portions and service is still fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal!
DJ
Loved it so much went back to back nights, the prawns are everything! It is not fancy but it's good.
Denise Kale
The food was good. In full transparency,I don't really like seafood, but the Fried Calamari and Famous Fish and Chips was great. The service was amazing! Waitress was very accommodating, not only with me but with her other clients as well I noticed. I Very acknowledgeable about the menu. This was a great experience.

Cynthia was an awesome waiter. Great food, great people!
Malcolm Davies
Always great service. Food always yummy. Nice to sit outside and soak up the sun.
Anura David
Hubby and I waited for 10 minutes without being offered menus or a drink. Hubby complained to the waiter who ensured that we were well looked after the complaint. Waited a long time for the food to arrive though. The restaurant was busy though so it seems like the cooking staff cant keep up when things get busy. The food was fantastic.
Nokuhle Biyela
pleasantly surprised at how quick the platter was cooked. It also tasted really great. Their Mojito is reallly great as well. Highly recommend if you love seafood.

While the quality of the food was pretty good at this branch, the service is below average. It took a while of waiting for someone to seat us and then it took even longer for us to be served. If the customer service was slightly better, it would be a winner
Rene Van Rensburg
The service was terrible and slow. We sat for a long time before our waiter came. He hardly greated and took along time to bring our drinks. He didnt suggest any specials- was like he couldnt get away fast enough. I got up and get new cutlery from the next table. And. I had to ask for bread. I asked him to go check on our food, didnt come to tell us how far the order was at. He was mostly talking to his friends outside. The waitress that served the table next to us, didnt even greet her customers.
With the economy down, one would assume servive would be tip top, its not.
Hema Harie Morar
The food was really good! The service was also good.

Went there during the week with my brother, the staff was welcoming and the was good. Their strawberry daiquiri was out of this world! Nice, chilled place
Lebo Masalesa
I did not like their service and it happened to me twice. I ordered for collection and was told it will take 10 to 15 minutes, I got there 25 minutes later and it was still not ready. the person who attended took 15 minutes only to be attended by another waiter and my food was cold. No apologies no nothing and this happened to me twice. The incompetency to collecting customer is disgusting.
Laura Morgan
This is not a complaint about the food but rather about the owner having a team meeting in the main restaurant area (while eating his Nandos lunch) and raising his voice at the team manager.
Grant Nader
Unfortunately did not live up to the standards of some other Ocean Baskets. Had a sushi platter which was very poor qualitybwith the tiniest amounts of salmon in the rolls.
Service was very slow even though it was mostly empty.
Won't be back.
Came here for lunch with my mother our waiter was Ntobie and she was really great. I ordered the 6 King prawns and my mother ordered the 12 queen prawns. Unfortunately we had to cut our date short because of bees even though Ntobie tried bringing the coffee to help chase the bees away but that didn’t work. I then ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri which was very sweet (too sweet). I really didn’t enjoy it. Either than that the service was really great

Went out for dinner with my soulmate at ocean basket rosebank n the service was very good our waiter Dee was excellent he kept on checking on us ..we opted on mussels starter n shrimp tempura it came out the way we wanted n for mains we decided to order platter for 2 and we wer not dissapointed at all ....good pricing good food good service keep up the good work i ll definatly be bck to try smethng else

Food was blend, take away packaging was not up to standard. Waitress was friendly and attentive.
I prefer ocean basket at Mall of The South.
Carol Nader
Very disappointed! Used to be great but food, staff and management all looked tired. Staff friendly enough but not attentive and my mezze platter had stale salmon cakes and rubbery calamari. Perhaps just a bad night?
Reginald B.
A mountain of seafood options!! It was like Bubba and them Shrimp from Forrest Gump.

I really enjoyed the approach of skillet plating and the food was good for a lower tier chain.
Sean William
This was my first time at Ocean Basket since they relocated at Rosebank.

I must say it was a perfect evening with a very friendly waitress, Jane, who served us.

The food portions was up to standard and delicious. It was the first time I ordered my seafood cajun style, and from now on I will always order my Ocean Basket meals to be prepared thís way!

Really enjoyed the experience, and would absolutely recommend this branch if you enjoy seafood as much as I do!

Another amazing waitress to look out for is Theresa.
Emmerentia Geldenhuys
Been waiting for our food for over 30 minutes, the service is poor plates are not cleared out, food that is arriving arrives at different times, which mean some of us eat and the others not and have to watch each other eat, the managers wander around disinterested on why only some of us are eating...won't be back and won't recommend this to anyone, rather try the Fishmonger 20 meters up the path.
Sana
Ate here last week. Had the biggest craving for Ocean basket. Their food was so disappointing. Absolutely flavourless and bland. Their service was terrible as well. We were served by Justice who seemed exhausted. And we had to keep searching for him when we needed something incl. placing our order for mains! But taste wise this is the worst ocean basket by far. You guys were yummy at your old spot. Maybe it was an off day cuz you were super busy. But i won't risk it again. The sushi was nice. The platter for 2 was tasteless.
Od.tony
I liked the new location. Sushi was great, food overall good. Service was friendly and good although desserts took longer to arrive than expected

The best I can say about my visit and my meal is “disappointing”…
Disappointing service; disappointing spacing of tables; disappointing decor; disappointing prawns 🦐; more disappointing rice & garlic butter sauce; overall a disappointing experience. It hurt to pay so much of my hard earned money for such disappointment.
I neglected to check Zomato and this restaurants rating beforehand, as I just happened to walk past the front door but if I had seen the 2.9 I most probably would of kept on walking and quite honestly I wish I had.
Meagan Whitehorn
Enjoy a good fish and chips at Ocean Basket every now and again after a few hours shopping in the Rosebank Mall. The food is consistent and service is always good. You get what you pay for.
Elissar Saad
Staff is friendly. Food is good, but seems to differ at times. Sometimes I really enjoy my platter, sometimes I feel like the taste I'm expecting is not there.
Joash Narainsamy
This Ocean Basket is always busy, but I suspect it's due to the location rather than their food. Service is decent but the food is average. It also needs updating to the new franchise aesthetic.
Tamara Reddy
Unfortunately their restaurant covering makes for an uncomfortable dining experience with very poor lighting.

Visited the restaurant last Thursday for lunch and while it was a cold day outside, we were too warm inside the restaurant.

We ordered their tempura prawn roll sushi, which was very average and their mojitio carafe which wasn't anything spectacular. Our friends who ordered the Platter for Two were pleased with their meal.
Mona Makwakwa
Ocean Basket is my go to place when I'm in the mood for good seafood 😋😋😋 I always go for their platters😋😋😋😋 love this Rosebank establishment, it's very small, however, the service and food is very good😋😋
Michael Fung
I just want to compliment the integrity of this restaurant. We were served raw fish which was shocking for me but when we told the manager he apologized profusely and gave me a full refund on the entire meal and not just the fish. They did not complain or try fight with me. Good thumbs up for correcting a mistake.
Reema Vather
Mediocre Sushi, dry tasteless chips. My husband ordered the platter of hake, calamari and prawn which was average. Service was lacking - slow and inattentive.
Matt Roos
The decor and ambience isn't great compared to other Ocean Baskets that I've been to around Johannesburg.

The bread rolls that were brought before the meal were stale and clearly out of a packet (they weren't even served warm).

The chips were mediocre at most, albeit the fish was tasty and the prawns and mussels were well flavored and tasted good.

The prices have clearly gone up, but yet it seems that the quality has gone down. This doesn't make any sense.

Please bring back the old Ocean Basket that served good meals at good prices.
Namita Lad
I have been to almost all the nearby ocean basket outlets. It is really a treat for the sea food lovers like me. I love the ocean platter. The lemon sauce is my favorite.
Chris
Yes the service can be slow and no it's not the best seafood you're going to have... but judging it for what it is and the prices they charge this branch of Ocean Basket is probably one of the most consistent branches. I'd say 7 times out of 10 you're going to leave happy and satisfied with what you've had and paid. I ordered the kingklip with half rice half chips and the salmon hand roll. Everything was decent. Will definitely be back.
Jo Burger
Just love this ocean basket, service is generally quick so we find it a good place for a pre-movie meal. Prices are good compared to other seafood restaurants and there are many options, from sushi to salads to fish n chips
Vishal Mistry
So it was Ocean Baskets 21st Birthday and had a R21 special on their fish and chips. My friend and brother decided to go through to the Rosebank restaurant. We obviously ordered the fish and chips, I think due to the popularity of the special they were mass producing the fish n chips. The chips were a little raw but i will excuse it because of the birthday. The fish was nice, fresh, and grilled well.
Tam Loves Food
Came with a large group of people. Service was a bit slow and the sushi arrived a long while after the other orders. The food was average, not thing spectacular about the flavours. The sushi was fresh and I quite enjoyed it. The restaurant looks quite old and is in need of some revamping although the outside section is lovely in summer as its cooler

You usually know what to expect at any Ocean Basket , standard menu with good variety of seafood. Situated in a prime location at The Zone , you can't help but notice the ocean basket as you come down from the escalators. All of this contributes to a good vibey atmosphere. As always I usually go for the "Pick of the Ocean" as it comes with Prawns , calamari and line fish. Unfortunately on this visit I was disappointed with the quality of food. The calamari was rubbery & chewy and not as tender as I expected. The prawns were disintegrating and were hardly noticeable , small in size. The line fish was ok but could have been fresher . This led me to complain about food quality. Kudos to the manager and waitress who tried their best to sort my issue. On the second occasion there was no difference in the the calamari which was still quite chewy . The prawns I received were much better in size. A decent outing but not great ! Service was good ! The waitress & manager on duty tried their best to sort my problem .Probably put this outing down to an off day.

Settled for a Lemon butter Grilled Calamari dish and was reasonably satisfied. Restaurant was packed and extremely noisy though especially the tables situated by the kitchen. The chef loved ringing his bell so much, I had to remind myself I wasn't at a horse racing event witnessing last lap repeats! Overall food was satisfactory along with the service.
HungryFitGirl
If you are going to eat sushi rather go somewhere else for it as the sushi isn't particularly spectacular as it should be but I LOVE ocean basket for its other foods. Their secret sauce used in all dishes is something I would happily lick off an old man (ok not really but you catch my drift).

I particularly like the mussels as the starters as you can mop up the sauce with the fresh warm bread brought to the table (also a favorite of my dad, we would fight over the last bit of sauce like wild hyenas). It was awesome. For mains, I'd either opt for the calamari and rice OR the platter for 1. Whenever I had either dishes, I was never disappointed. YUMMO! This branch is my favorite as the service is often good even though it was always so busy!

I had to write this review about the new MediterrAsian sushi that I had. It's a new style and flavour that was introduced recently and I absolutely loved it, enjoying the Tarama and Calamari gunkan :) definitely worth a stop and try, sushi with a taste difference 🍤🍤 good service, good setting and enjoyable all round

We love the ocean basket normally - you know exactly what you going to get and decided to go back to this branch after a couple years -service was slow and disorganized from the get go -even though restaurant was half empty - food took ages - sushi was really not bad but the platters were horrible - the chips were powdery and the calamari was rubbery and tasteless-really below par . To add insult to injury - when we had paid our bill and left the waiter ran after to tell us he had mixed up
Our bill with another😬😬
At no time did the manager intervene of his own accord and when we went up to him to let him know about our horrible experience at his shop - he motioned that he was on the phone and that we were disturbing him...

I'm a great fan of Ocean Basket and one of the great things is their consistency between their various franchises across the country. Rosebank lets them down unfortunately. Food not up to the same standard as other branches. Ordered the Seared Salmon salad which I've had at other branches, was no where near the same quality. Normally comes with a larger helping and loads of finely sliced cucumber etc, this one came with virtually no salad etc. Other food was fine but average.
Abdullah Mahamed
Don't get me wrong I love me some good ocean basket but this specific outlet is such a disappointment. Service is terrible. I don't think the waiters are even trained as I had to flag one down more than once and she didn't bring half the things. Anyway I had the platter for one which was okay, the calamari was like rubber though :(. The creamed spinach was not creamy, it was basically just spinach. The garlic and feta prawns (starter) I guess just made it worth it, good and saucy just the way I like it Haha. Be back? Highly doubt so

I was there yesterday with my family. The food was normal. The decor has been like that since Rosebank mall started, Time for change please. The owner was very nice came for a chat. But his staff is just so cold and had an attitude, they just chasing money. Overall experience I felt like I was at a normal fish and chips cafe in town.
The Food Musketeer
*old review* another spot I've failed to review. I guess that's because this particular branch reminds me of an incident that happened many years ago and I haven't been back ever since. A few of us had lunch here one afternoon. I usually have my favourite dom Pedro to drink instead of a dessert option.

When our waitress came with our drinks she was standing next to me and as she picked up the coffee off the tray she didn't think to counteract the weight of the drinks and hence my drink ended up toppling all over me from head to toe. As my luck would have it I was dressed in full black that day so you could see the mess very clearly. My waitress then went awol and I had to run up the escalator to the nearest ladies bathroom to clean the mess off me and all I got was a "sorry" on my return. I smelt like Cape velvet for the rest of the afternoon until I got home to change.

The best ...... Every time I come to Johannesburg, I must pass by ocean basket :-) very nice and welcoming staff , delicious food , and good prices

Super impressed with the quality of food and service at ocean basket! A Carafe of Tranquille (Pierres Jourdan) with a chan sushi platter all for R110 makes for a great lunch.
Nkateko Nkuna
I've been to the Ocean Basket a few times and I really enjoy their food. My pick is always the 'Pick of the Ocean' as it has almost everything in one pan and is always yummy and satisfying. I personally feel it's the best value for money for 1 person. The service here is good, food is fresh but portions small compared to the other branches. Their complementary bread can be a bit stale at times it other than that no complaints.
Clare Appleyard
Fairly solid, nothing outstanding. Had dinner before a movie - I had sushi, my partner had the 18 prawn special. We like the fact that you can have stir-fried veggies so it's paleo-friendly. Tuna sushi sandwiches were particularly delicious. Service could do with some touch-ups.

Service: The setting is as usual for all ocean basket franchises. I especially liked the service at this branch. Our waitress was friendly and reliable.

Food: Combos are always my go to. The sushi (spicy salmon) was great. The mussels are one of my fav. Soaked in that lemon butter sauce. It's the greatest mussels.
I usually ask for calamari and prawns to be Cajun style for that spice. Whilst the calamari was amazing . The prawns tend to get a little dry in this style. I recommend that the prawns be soaked in sauce. And the calamari be cajun style.
Overall the food was good.

A good , not too pricy sea food joint. Average cost : R150 per person
Duduzile Chiloane
Came here because my sushi cravings got me and it opens till 11pm which i like but the service today sucks. Waiters standing around watching soccer while the customers wait. And i order the Rock Trampura which the prawn was so cold but i braved it and enjoyed it . Then got the platter for one and i asked for chips but got half half. No calamari heads were on site really disappointed in that cos those are my favourites
Dani
Went here for lunch.
The service was really slow
There were bees everywhere
I had the sushi... It wasn't great at all
When I was pouring the soy sauce the lid came off and it spilled all over the table and me 😥

I've been to this Ocean Basket several times (never by my own choice), and I've never had a great experience. My most recent visit, during which I had family from Europe with me, was a disaster.

Our waiter couldn't remember our drinks order, but made no attempt to write it down. He brought too few still waters, not enough wine glasses, and so it goes on. We ordered oyster starters for the table, and everyone ordered their own fish/combo mains. Whilst waiting a decidedly long time for our oysters, our mains arrived! I sent them back, stating that starters should (obviously) be served before mains. When the oysters were finally dispatched, they seemed to be baby oysters, as they were all tiny. Not one was average in size, and there were certainly no large ones. They were smaller that your average muscles, and had very little taste.

Our mains were better, but nothing to rave about. I've definitely had better food at other Ocean Basket branches (not to mention better service). There was also very little sauce given with the mains that the menu states come with sauce (ie: the lemon butter sauce). I definitely will be going to any Ocean Basket BUT this one in future.

Went to this branch of OB twice in one week for lunch. The one day was busy and service was super slow, the next time was a bit quieter and the service was excellent, so I guess it's just the luck of the draw! The sushi is ok, nothing amazing, and a bit pricey. The calamari and platter for 1 were good, however the calamari in the platter came fried, which my boyfriend didn't want, and wasn't given the option to choose.
Nosipho
Met a friend for lunch, I had great services because our server had product knowledge. The food was great. The restaurant is hidden and the settings isn't so great but I loved the food.
Shannon Correia
If you want more affordable seafood in Rosebank, Ocean Basket is the place to go. The service is attentive and the food is prepared in good time and delicious. The spicy sushi was not my favorite, but the prawns and calamari were good.
Akira Ramraj
Mishaan18 and I decided to go for dinner here and it was honestly the worst Ocean Basket I have been to. Once seated, our waitress probably forgot about us because she decided to only see to us after about 15-20 minutes. We had to wait a while to place an order for our mains and when the waitress did arrive, she had attitude. The food took long and the quality of it was so poor. It tasted old and the mussels were not fresh at all. Overall experience here was not the best, I don't think I would be coming back.
Lesa-Jo
I really enjoy going to Ocean Basket but did not enjoy my dining experience here last weekend. My fish and prawns were not up to standard compared to what I have had at other Ocean Basket's before. I waited for ages for the waitress to bring more lemon and by the time she brought it I had finished my food. Didn't feel it was value for money at all.
Usha
Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed, service was slow n we didn't know who our waiter or waitress was. Sad part was we was not given the specials before we ordered cos it wud have been nice to try them...
Lauras World
From the Ocean Basket family, I have not found their Rosebank outlet, below the Primi to be on par with similar outlets such as the Sandton one, but if you are in the mood for seafood, their new winter menu and sushi specials at very low prices make it a risk worth taking. Sadly nothing about my trip to this restaurant apart from the standard Ocean Basket specials made it memorable.

*Recommendations: On the new winter specials, if you are wanting to give this outlet a chance, I can recommend the seafood curry for one and/or paella which can both be enjoyed with spicy, hot Gluhwein.
Alexandra Du Plessis
Really not a great fan of this Ocean Basket. While not expensive, their sushi is more expensive than Yamada where I normally go, and the quality is really quite mediocre.

At this Ocean Basket, we waited ages to be served and had to physically get up and find a waiter when we wanted to order and pay the bill. When the bill EVENTUALLY arrived, it was someone else's and we had to wait yet again.

I wont voluntarily eat here again.

I think I'm still trying to figure out, between this Ocean Bssket and the one at Killarney Mall, which one disappointed me most. My friend Gugu Zwane lurves Ocean Basket probably a little more than I do so when I told her we wouldn't be going back here she was very disappointed. Our food came out so fast but it was soooo cold - not warm but cold. The lemon butter had even started to set and when I told or waiter about my complaint, she offered to go put in the microwave instead of bring me a new fresh plate. Chips were sooooo stale - I even felt as though someone had sent the food back to the kitchen and once we ordered the same thing, it came out to our table and no one was willing to properly rectify the matter. I was really disappointed - more especially because I love seafood. Oh well...
Londiwe Mylo Gumbi
Service of waiters is poor. Waited 30 mins for a takeaway order. Nothing offered while I wait. Wasn't even full but wait was still long. Wonder what happens during peak times.
Debbie Airey
There are no words. DISGUSTING. Service
Shocking. Poor for preparation
Restaurant looks shabby and dirty. After asking to see a Manager twice who was sitting behind us he did not even bother to attend to us. Our waiter had a bad attitude. Tempura prawn hand roll soggy and cold. Seared salmon slathered in Bottled stinky garlic what the hell. Revolting. Very tired establishment simply relying on a Franchise Name. Shape up.
Claire Wiggill
Had a quick Father's Day lunch today. Good service and really ocean basket offers great value for money! Tried out the paella and although it didn't taste like an authentic paella it was tasty! Like that they added some winter items to the menu like Gluhwein which is served in a carafe with a scarf - cute.
LuluFromJozi
Affordable seafood in comfortable enough setting. Restaurant is warm and out of chilly cold. Food tasty and incredibly fast. They just pour sauce all over all the food so request it separately. Staff are attentive and friendly, however they are not keen on wine tastings. Request that from the owner. Wine list not too extensive hut a bit overpriced for quality of wine. (If you appreciated this review, please like and/or comment below.)
Rentia Van Der Westhuizen
This is a great place fora quick lunch or dinner. Their seafood is always fresh and well prepared - not over-cooked. Great service and the chef and owner checks in with guests.
Wendi Kark
Rosebank really lacks good restaurants and this did not disappoint. Lack lustre service and food. The waitress had to be asked several times for water. Won't be rushing back
Janice Kelvin Leibowitz
This branch is not up to the same standard as others that I've visited (Killarney, Melrose Arch). Service wasn't great. Like many places the waitress kept forgetting to bring my glass of water - I have no clue why this often seems to be such a difficult request to fulfill! The food is good although nothing to rave about. On the plus side The Ocean Basket is one of the only restaurants nowadays that brings you bread/rolls before your meal!
Peter Jacobs
Went to this place today for lunch. Ordered sushi. Was told by the waitress it takes time, being hungry we waited. Two hours later we wrapped up our meal. This is unacceptably long to wait for food. I approached the manager and was told that is how long it takes and there is nothing he can do about it! So in short...if u wanna waste a whole afternoon waiting for sushi go and eat there....if u want a nice meal, go elsewhere!
Jacques Coetzee
Terrible!

Been to the restaurant twice. Both visits were horrid.
Had oysters and sushi the first time. Oysters were teeny tiny!
The sushi was below average. Had tuna sashimi and it arrived at the table grey-ish in colour and had a watery/spongey texture (didn't eat it). Obviously frozen to hell and back!
The salmon was not bad, just very thin slices (slivers) of sashimi.

On our second visit we had a platter of seafood. Couldn't fault the food. But this time the owner made the whole experience unpleasant. A real douchebag if you ask me!
Standing rather close to our table (and in earshot of most of the tables outside) telling off his staff! Rambling on about how "useless" they are!

I asked our server if this is what he's like; and she replied: YES! ALL THE TIME!!

We won't go back!
Theresa Offwood-le Roux
Been here a few times for lunch during work. Service is always great and the food always at the same standard. I've never been unhappy - the calamari is my go-to dish. With that yummy lemon butter sauce, always a winner! If you're looking for decent seafood at a reasonable price - ocean basket is usually a good bet.
Jane Sikwe
Horrible
I usually have a great meal here with my friends, but this past weekend has been highly disappointing.

The spicey tuna maki and prawn tempura sushi starters were unpleasant; they were not neatly rolled they were different sizes which is a no no for sushi and were not even a bite size.

The main course was disgusting my friend and i ordered the calamari steak. Firstly it was not grilled, and had this black stuff on it which seemed to be burnt residue from other food they had cooked in that very same pan they used to make our calamari steaks. My calamari steak was tasteless not even the butter lemon sauce tasted like anything. My friends calamari steak was watery and overly salty. We pointed all these things out to the manager; and he gave us this dismissive attitude in a nutshell was telling us that we as the customer know nothing. Which was highly unprofessional, and disheartening cause we had been looking forward to having a great meal there.
I won't come to eat here again sadly.
Jodene Shaer
A great spot for seafood and a chilled night out. Decent wines and a choice of sushi too. My best part is the platters to share so you get a little bit of everything.
Rujuta Karnik
The best place for seafood........ the service is quick & friendly.
Calamari starters and Butter Garlic Prawns platter are to die for.......!
Anushila Chakraborty
Any visit to the Rosebank arena is incomplete without a trip to the Ocean Basket. To do justice, you need multiple visits actually. The Kingclip and the Jumbo Hakes here are legendary. But my all-time favourite is the Shipman's Platter that comes with Calamaris and Kingclips. The ambience gets full thumbs up so does the food. The only downside would be the service - be ready to have keep time in your hands while you place your orders.
Balungile
Every time I go to an Ocean Basket, I order the fish and prawn combo because it is the only thing that tastes good. I like that certain outlets have started offering buns instead of bread, but today the offering wasn't warm at all. It was fresh, but I would have liked warm bread (which is something other restaurants offer, and considering this weather, it is so greatly appreciated).

Never mind. The prawns were good, albeit seemingly princess prawns rather than prince prawns. The fish (line fish) is ALWAYS good. The rice was a bit hard and not fully cooked and the fries aren't the best in the world. Nevertheless, Ocean Basket always offers fresh food and have never had a problem there. I wish the portions were a little bigger. Does that make me a pig?

The service was decent, of course, with attention from the waiters, the managers and even the owner!
Andrew Ibrahim
I love the food. It's light and the fish is fresh. Great value for money.
Devon Peters
I enjoyed my lunch at Ocean Basket recently.

The calamari starter was good and on such a hot day a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc was in order - not a great wine list, I must say. I understand that it is a franchise but, in South Africa we have no excuse for poor wine lists.

The hake and chips as a main course was similarly good. A healthly size portion and the chips were great. I also tasted some of the sushi and it was great - good portion and nice and fresh.

The waiteress was attentive and had a smile.

It could have been a great meal had the wine selection been better and one was not limited to only inexpensive and uncomplex wine options.
Derek Martin
This ocean basket is probably the worst ocean basket I have ever been too, we went there on a Thursday evening for a quick meal- guess what it was not so quick at all, the service is absolutely terrible!

After waiting for about 45 minutes our food arrived and guess what it was cold, I sent it back and the manager still just ignored us, when the food arrived again it was once more cold, I asked to talk to the manager and he just refused point blank to talk to us. The waitress was pulling him on his arm to come see us!

I decided that enough is enough and asked for the bill, when the bill arrived they wanted to charge us for both mains which we could not eat, I asked once again for the manger and once again he did not come, eventually we just got up and left without paying a single cent!

If you looking for a bad dining experience, try this Ocean basket, I won't be going there again... Ever!

Pretty much like all Ocean Baskets, this one offers a standard menue with their prawns being a pull factor.

I love the Ocean Basket franchise and so I visit this particular one very often.

Their sushi on offer is a bit better than many others while their lemon and butter sauce is great.

I order their prawns, calamari and fish which I am never dissapointed.

Although the service here could imporve.

It gets crazy busy at lunch time and on weekends and a simple order could take over an hour to arrive.

While dinning at Ocean Basket is great it is not anything extra-ordinary. Worth a shot though.

My last four visits to this branch have all been distinctly below average. The interior needs a revamp - many restaurants have started doing this and hopefully they will start too. Will make the dining experience much better. The wait for food is much longer at this branch even when it is quiet. The manager was quite rude to us on the one occasion where we were waiting for 1.5hrs for food. Food can be held up because they have only one chef capable of making sushi and he does it very slow. Given that there is generally one order of sushi at each table on average they really should train another person to help out.

I have been served cold food here. My food had also taken long when I was eating alone. Don't order the Greek salad, it is cold to the point of being frozen. The feta is served as a big block and the tomatoes are quartered and huge!

The flavour on the prawns is not great and the three way calamari was very rubbery. There was not enough lemon butter sauce on the calamari. Rolls served are stale.

This used to be my pick for a decent moderately priced seafood restaurant if its averaged priced food and not ambience you are seeking. There prices have increased and quality has decreased so I would only visit if I had no other option.

Until last Saturday, Ocean Basket was one of those franchises that I would to scorn. "Haha, they eat out of frying pans" I used to chuckle... However, my craving for sushi at an affordable price caused me to reconsider this once upon a time favorite. Boy oh boy was I glad I did! The Rosebank OB (that's my nickname for my new darling) was amazing. The service was great, the dorado and veggies hit the spot and the sushi made me giddy. This is gonna be my new Saturday routine.

Ocean Basket is a chain so there is only so much you can expect from it. The Rosebank branch can be very busy and can have inconsistent service from staff. I've had waiters forget my order or get my order wrong on a number of occasions.

One time the Platter for One that I ordered was both over spiced and slightly burnt. And yet, whenever I'm in the mood for a fair priced seafood meal, I always find myself back there. There really aren't any good alternatives for getting good quality, moderately priced seafood. You will always get a fair quality meal for a fair price. And for people like me, who can't make up their mind on what to order, there's something to be said for getting all your fishy things on the same platter.

One tip: get everything done cajun style because it just tastes better. Then order your garlic butter sauce or the spicier LM sauce on the side.

I love seafood and usually enjoy Ocean Basket but the Rosebank one is not one of my favorites.

It tends to get very full and loud which in this setting is really annoying.

Also find the service lacking the last few times visited with the waiter forgetting about you.

Tried one of the new additions to the menu, the stir fry which I didn't enjoy. Most the vegetable where still to raw to be ala dente.

Their sushi is bland and not one of my favorites.

This branch does have additional menu items which differ from other branches but I have not tried any off them, tend to stick to the normal menu and order my standard items - prawns and calamari combo or three way calamari.
