Super friendly and helpful staff. They do a great job with helping you mix in and enjoy the local scene. Lots of cool people and energy in the area to feel inspired by the culture, learn about the history, and appreciate the beauty of the community.
Very helpful and friendly people. Loved the vibe, felt very safe in the hostel. The neighborhood is not always as safe, but staff offered us to walk us to the ATM, which was very sweet. Would recommend everyone to go to Curiocity!
First time visiting Joh-berg and I stayed here with my friend. Being from Australia we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into but Curiocity Staff and other residents staying there welcomed us in straight away. Stayed in an 8 person dorm which was basic but spacious. The public spaces are where it's at. The bar pops off till around midnight and everyone then kicks on. They have plenty of organised activities and suggestions if wanting to explore. 5 stars.
While we didn't stay at Curiocity Backpackers this time, we dropped by to chill and work while waiting for car repairs nearby. My husband has stayed here before and found it clean and reasonably priced for a hostel. The common areas were impressively clean, and we had a delightful dining experience at Spook Munchies African Cuisine next door. Camagu stood out with his exceptional hospitality, ensuring that all guests felt well cared for and maintaining a clean and tidy environment. Whether for a stay or just to hang out, I wholeheartedly recommend this place!
The staff are super helpful with information. The hostel vibe was amazing and the common areas are beautiful with enough sitting areas. I loved that there was a common area only for residents. The staff are really concerned about the safety of their guests.
Disliked · The music at the nearby bars play until very late and it can affect sleep. The safety and security ⚠️ warnings got me really scared of exploring the area, but that is not the hostel's fault.
Great entrypoint into Maboneng and Joburg as a whole. Don’t skip the tours. They’re really good (shout-out to Eko!). Keep in mind that Foxstreet is loud and getting to sleep is difficult! The best things are the staff and the fact that travelers and locals get to mingle. This will often result in having some good conversations.
For anyone that loves backpacking this place defines it.
Casual visit for a Friday night, you are in for a good vibe. Good class of people
I was pleasantly surprised. Very clean and vibey. As far as an SA backpackers it's styling.
Great place to chill and watch people. Their beef stew is so delicious.
A really lovely place with nice culture and people. A great mix between locality and tourism. The place is so unique and special, but I do have to say that two things were harder for me during my stay.
1. The beds creaking and being quite unstable in the shared dormitory. Every move could be felt and you could easily see the bed skewing a bit.
2. This has nothing to do with the hostel it self, but the area is home to a few very loud clubs. So loud that you will hear the MC shout till 3 am. It was an issue for me because after more nights sleeping there I was sleeping really badly.
I still give them 4 stars due to the nice atmosphere and bar which really make this place golden, but I would not recommend it for more than two days.
