Review News Cafe Newtown - Johannesburg

Food was great. Drinks were great. Waitrons need name badges though as they dont introduce themselves, it would be nice to know who is taking care of our table by name.

Great vibe and great music. The waiters are very nice and respectful. The food was great although took longer than I would have liked. Otherwise no complaints, their bathrooms are also clean and look modern. Inside they is DJ and you can seat on couches around, great overall.

Oupa Salemane dazzled us with wonderful jazz music, his session was well attended and News Cafe was on point in terms of hospitality

The place was buzzing with very loud deep house music, however was not packed. It was very chilled it was just my bae and I and no other odd distractions. The lamp ribblets offered in rosemary were very tasty and nice.

Food delicious, beer extra cold, service on point

It's a nice place but I am concerned about the salt in their food. It was the second time I went there and felt that the salt was too much. Either than that, the place is nice.

Nice place for the young, vibey, trendy, quick and professional service and thank heavens for their security at the door. We had a good session of drinks knowing we are being looked after. Bathrooms were clear. The place is wheelchair accessible and they serve food until late in the night. Their prices are good.

Always great vibe and platter is on point. Drinks are always perfect

Wine prices are reasonable. Burgers are great. But the music is lit. Good for date nights, you can talk without screaming while listening to good music

The waiter suggested that I order creamy curried chicken and it was dry,the rice dry and the there chicken was full of curry there was nothing creamy about the chicken, the person I was with ordered lamb chops and they had a very bad smell ,they were expired but the waiter was kind and the music is great

We ordered our food and settled in with our drinks which were great. After about 30 minutes the waiter came to us and told us we needed to reorder as our dishes were not available as they were out of stock of the crispy pork belly. Why did it take so long to tell us? When our new dishes arrived they were delicious.
I usually come here with my sister or friends.
The first time we were here, our waiter was Katlego, and every time we went there we would ask for him. He is a great waiter, always has a smile on.
Today I was a bit disappointed that he left, but anyhow, service was still good, and overall it is a great place.

Service was a bit slow but thanks to Thandi for a warm welcome and the lovely BBQ sauced wings were to die for, definitely coming back for more especially the Heineken on tap.

It's been the longest time that I visited a news café. The menu has changed. But I went with the classic Long Island iced tea which was good...tasty but not as powerful as I remembered. Also had the nachos...disappointed cos the chips was soggy!

I used to frequent the branch in the JHB theatre in Braamfontein. Not sure if its still there. But Newscafe has been a great sundowners spot for me. Before or after a show, or even after work( I worked next door), this place has a great view and great menu. They started introducing a harvest table also.

I've had a huge change of heart concerning this place. My first time there was a bad but second time was too nice. Lebo our waitress was super friendly. The music is great. The food is good and it was just great way to end the week. Had the pleasure of meeting the manager Thabo and he made sure we were well taken care of. Overall I think this is my favourite News cafe.i I'll definitely be back

Newscafe for me will always be a cool drink spot after work or on weekends, purely for drinks, music and the vibe (day & night) I really like it, personally I stay away from the food at such places.

Good vibes. Good music. Great choice of Dj's... A proper place to just have a great time, amazing customer service as well. Thoroughly impressed.

Nice venue to sit outside and get a bit of a breeze on a scorching Summer's day. Very empty on a Saturday morning - probably more a night time haunt in Newtown. Waiter good, food ok- nothing marvelous or bad - just another chain food restaurant.

I went to News Cafe for the finals of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. It was an enjoyable experience. It wasn't full and the chicken bites were really good, although the wings were dry. Service wasn't amazing. The waiter kind of forgot about us for the most part of the night. I had fun, though.

Savanna hosted their first Savannah Comedy Session at this Newscafe last night. I personally don't think I am Newscafe's target market - the vibe really doesn't appeal to me. The music was super loud. It was so loud, I struggled to hear the people sitting around the table with me. We ordered the chicken nachos to share and although they were yummy-ish, there just wasn't enough salsa or cheese on the tortilla chips. It was such a pity coz that salsa was really delicious. I had the beef chilli and bacon wrap for my main and it was totally yumm. A little dry but it had a really awesome zing to it. What I really liked about this Newscafe is the décor. The writings on the wall and on their mirrors made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Great touch. Ultimately, it was an Ok evening. As for the comedy, it was really dry - but hey, this was a Savannah gig. LOL.

I don't find much difference between any of the News Cafe's in the group to be honest. When we sat down and ordered we weren't told that they were closing early. We were only told when our food was brought to us! Apparently there was meant to be a power outage in the area for an upgrade. So our food was brought at 8.05 and we were told they were closing at 8.15! We were rather surprised! Then we were told we would be able to stay and eat but we'd have to pay immediately in case the power did go off and the tills went offline. Well we paid, we ate and needless to say the power remained on!! But still we weren't impressed at the lack of communication. And it didn't help that my companion's calamari was undercooked and had to be sent back!! So we were thankful the power was still on!!!

My waiter Ayanda was a superstar! I had asked him to keep my drink as I went to MTN as I had a phone problem and he trusted me enough that I could quickly go out and in before I finished my drink or settled my bill. I had been jotting in and out but his service had always been a winner. He recommended the original melt dish which I declined at first then when I asked for the menu again and he recommended it again, I went for it and don't regret it. Thanks Ayanda- you're amazing.

Today was #TSwomensrace in Newtown and this place was not prepared for the influx of hungry runners wanting breakfast
That said, the service was great, coffee amazing and the breakfast just what was needed
Most of us ordered the Early Bird R25 special... My word there was such a LOT of food on the plate! Well worth the money.
