Review The Local Grill - Johannesburg

No wonder this is an award-winning home. Very nice atmosphere, super attentive service from everyone we had contact with, spectacular steaks with many, many choices and always in two types of animal feed, loose in the pasta or with rations. We were invited to visit the kitchen and we had a brief and exciting explanation from the Chef of how they are bred, fed the animals before slaughtering and what this process changes in relation to the preparation and texture of the meat, excellent experience!!! A must-see for a delicious and unforgettable meal.

A wonderful experience, with the kitchen tour being the icing on top of a fabulous meal. The restaurant has a bustling atmosphere with it’s large open windows facing the street. We took advantage of the Leffe Belgian beer on tap and enjoyed oysters for our starter, all of which was exceptional. The waiter happily accommodated our request to tour the kitchen, and received an insightful and well-presented tour. The three of us then had a fantastic jersey beef chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection.

Incredible food with very informative staff. Had the grassfed fillet for 200g and it was so tasty. And just right. I had mash as a side but I heard there is a local alternative which is more traditional. The Mulva cake at the end was simply delicious. Cannot recommend more

Loved the place the place the serve was amazing and the food also. We had a year-end lunch and they catered us lovingly

Thank you for the legendary customer service. The Christmas lunch was delicious, decor was amazing and ambiance was so fantastic. From my family to yours, a 5* is well deserving👌🏾👌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾

The T-Bone was good. Not the best one I've had, my medium steak was actually medium rare. The dessert was good. The wait staff was friendly but they did get our order wrong at first. It was corrected however. Recommended but 4 stars not 5.

We had an excellent carpaccio starter followed by the grain-fed and grass-fed fillet steaks (grass fed was definitely the winner). I had a small issue with my medium rare steak, as it was a bit too rare in the middle. But our waiter took that piece back to the kitchen to have it cooked a bit longer. Otherwise it was a lovely night out and our waiter was top notch.

Highly recommended place for the true meat lover to enjoy a range of quality, aged beef cuts. Knowledgeable and professional staff who take you on a journey and help you select between grass fed and grass fed premium beef. Will definetly be back soon.

One of the best steak I have eaten was here. The boss also offers a kitchen tour and he shows the meat and introduces the different types if beef. When I am back in Johannesburg I will definitely go there again

Good location. Very good quality meats. Perfectly cooked. My steak was a bit cool when I receved it. 400 pp

First restaurant/kitchen tour I experienced. That alone was the highlight of my evening, the cold room wasn't funny though. Make sure to book ahead for the tour. Great food as well with excellent host 👌🏾

Very nice place, sauces was not so nice but steak was amazing.

I was traveling for work and friends took me to this particular restaurant. Great experience, beautiful visit to the kitchen and the explanation on the preparation of the meat! Great to eat, and I can tell, I'm from Italy!

This is an amazing establishment with great food and drinks. Our Onyx bird travel group was privileged in getting a first class behind the scene tour in what goes into making great food Great.

Went here for a steak because it had great reviews. Good choice and my review is also positive. The steak was top quality. My only negative point was the fries. They were so skinny that they had no substance

Simply the best steak in Jhb. Exceptional service and good choice of drinks. Keep it up!

Had a lovely evening at The Local Grill, we were a table of approx 12 - This is probably why the food took quite some time. Other than waiting for our meals, the service was attentive and dishes were perfect! Not one unsatisfied tummy!

Honestly the most underwhelming steak i have had in my life. So under seasoned, so undercooked and so much fat instead of meat on the 500g wing-rib. My friend’s 700g was literally the same size as mine. Not ever recommending this place to anyone. Sorry not sorry!! Only decent thing was the wine, kudos to that “steakhouse”

If you have to ask me what my favourite steakhouse is, the answer is easy… the Local Grill. The Local Grill is based in Parktown North and has been around since 2002. The owner, Steve Maresch, follows a strict “field to fork” principle meaning that the beef is sourced from the best producers and then aged at the restaurant and cut to order.

Ok, 3 Stars only, but should be 3.5. The Beef Carpaccio Is absolutely the best in Johannesburg. Fresh, Very Meaty and to my surprise, there is no need to add extra dressing, not even salt and pepper. Absolutely a fantastic dish. The Salmon ceviche, bland, not good. The meats: this was supposed to be the treat of the night, but there was no grassfed available and the grainfed beef was just OK.
I asked for Aperol Spritzers to start the evening before ordering food, but the barman never heard of Aperol before. ( I thought that Aperol was quite popular lately). I order Margaritas at the end, and it was quite decent and well prepared.

If you’re looking for a good steak, this is the place to come. The staff are also very pleasant and knowledgeable. Great wine list and pleasant ambiance.

We have had our eyes on this well known and revered restaurant for a couple of years now. I must admit I had pretty high expectations. Staff was extremely friendly and professional, but when we were seated right next to the welcoming desk when arriving early in the evening with a booking, I was not impressed. We requested a table with more ambience and was immediately assisted. One would expect this table to be reserved for late arrivals or non bookers. Anyway, the ‘kitchen tour’ was ok, however the difference between grass fed and grain fed meats was not explained optimally, it was still a nice touch and added to the experience. We were allowed in the meat 🥩 ageing cool room which was really uhm.. 😎 cool. Seriously. The meat, although impeccable cooked, did not live up to my expectations. A bit bland. Sides were cooked to perfection and dessert was fabulous. All in all, good, but not worth the extra 💵 . I’m glad I could visit, but won’t rush back🙈

Its never nice to give a bad account of an experience especially after returning after 5 years. On set up, nothing has changed, bar at entrance, patio outside area overlooking the streets, whites, black and woods decor.

Booked for the Restaurant Week offer, and as always I compare my limited 3 course menu to the full menu. No effort was placed into Restaurant Week menu, just the same offerings from main and it was also a bit cheaper to order from normal menu. Requesting to do both caused my waiter a bit of trouble but they agreed we could order from both. The wine by the glass selection, is limited and they were out of my selection.

Starters arrived of springrolls one prawn and bobotie. The bobotie was good, however the prawn was just too salty. We tried to flag down a waiter as ours was not in sight, we were just ignored. No other waiter even though were available attended to us. Neighbouring tables were been served and checked up on. The wait to get service was a bit long for my liking. We decided to leave, upon requesting our bill, we were attended to by the manager and he was apologetic and wished to rectify by offering to pay our bill. I politely declined and left, though did appreciate the gesture.

The place is busy and there wasn't diversity in the patrons on my night. I love and enjoy food and if I feel I'm being treated differently from the rest, I opt to leave, as we are plentiful in choices of restaurants in the jhb area. Maybe it was just an off night for them!

The table settings were impeccable and the staff wonderful. However I was underwhelmed by the food. My steak was mediocre and one of my friends with me remarked that she may as well have a steak at the Spur. Save for the fact that the company and cocktails were amazing, I won’t be back for a while 😒
Mpho Makwana
Great steaks, high attention to detail, excellent preparation; especially the soft and succulent well done steaks! The timeline of when and how the steaks are aged (the more aged the tastier) all form part of the excellent experience ✨✨✨👌🏾

Best meat in Johannesburg for sure. The waiters know which meat is better to be eaten at what point and will always recommend the best. The 1kg sharing platter of fillet, sirloin and rump is a must try with shoe strings fries, onion rings and bernaise sauce. A joburg staple that everyone should try

The real appeal here is the ambiance. The local grill has the most wonderful atmosphere, bistro style dining just outside parkhurst. The service is also impeccable, Innocent our waiter was friendly and incredibly kind and helpful. The food I will say is slightly overpriced but good. My family enjoyed their steaks and the sides were well prepared and served beautifully, however the Malva pudding was served burned and the bernaise sauce that accompanied my moms steak was sub par. I will also say that their menu is quite simplistic with very few options for vegetarians and those who do not eat red meat (which was expected). On the other hand their chocolate brownie was an absolute hit (especially when paired with cognac) and their chips and meat dishes are incredibly tasty. All in all I will say the meal was enjoyable and the small little errors didn’t spoil a great experience here.

Another place if you’re feeling like devouring meat. I ate the pork ribs and as usual had it with a baked potato. Always a winner! The desserts are pretty darn good if you find space for some!

Thank you to Innocent and the rest of the team at the Local Grill.
I took 3 friends and colleagues who were here from the Middle East for a Tuesday night dinner.
From the atmosphere, to the wine, to the kitchen tour - all brilliant - special praise for the food though - wonderful steaks and sauces.
Overall - a memorable night made perfect by the expert team at The Local Grill.

My family took me to The Local Grill for my birthday last night. It was my first time at the restaurant and I really, really enjoyed it.

We were taken on a tour of the testing kitchen as well as the meat locker. It certainly was a nice touch. We were now hungry.

We obviously all ordered steak. I had the sirloin on the bone, my two sons a fillet and my Mrs and third son had a t-bone.

I have rarely tasted a steak with such a depth of flavor. So tender and so yum. My only criticism is that I don’t think my steak was rested well as there was a bit of blood on my plate. It did not retract from the flavor though. My family really enjoyed their steaks as well.

To my surprise I was presented with a free chocolate brownie for dessert. Wow, I have never, ever tasted a brownie so lush and delicious. To top off a good evening I was given a free bottle of wine as well.

The food was good but the service was just superb. My thanks to the team at The Local Grill for making my birthday so special.

I will certainly be back.
Truly an amazing restaurant to frequent. The staff are awesome and friendly and the food is absolutely amazing. Want a fantastic steak, look no further.

Ok so I’ve had countless steaks here. Mostly to try and decide who makes the best steak in JHB. I’m stuck though. The Local Grill, Grillhouse and Wombles always seem to make a steak better than the next. However, Local Grill just manages to edge out the other two. I’ve yet to have a bad experience. The kitchen tour adds to the atmosphere, the service is always great and their steaks are unbelievable. I’m a big fan of a rubbed rare steak with no condiments and these guys know just how to get it right. Try any steak, they’re all amazing.
Philippe
If you want to have a good piece of meat don’t look any more. The Local Grill is the best. Service is very good and the ambiance great.
Never been disappointed up to now.
The experience here is one you have to do if you love your meat. Ask your waiter to go on a tour of the kitchen and the freezer. The staff are friendly with a wealth of knowledge of the meats in stock.

TOP TOP TOP 🔝!

Amazing meat, amazing sides, amazing bread.
Can’t complain about anything, except that the service was a bit slow.
The waiters are friendly, the ambiance is chill, and the food is DELICIOUS.
Love it.

Every single time I come here I've had such a great experience. The team offers kitchen tours which are guided by the passionate chefs. The way they describe the steaks it makes your mouth water...and when the meal comes it's as good as they promised! Be sure to ask for a kitchen tour if you're there next time.

Been coming to this place since it opened and I must say what a great job the management has done in improving this place every time I've visited, which is probably more than half a dozen times. If you are coming for the first time the grass fed steaks are a mind blowing must, for an extra special experience call beforehand and book the salt rock. Service is good- knowledgeable hosts. Won't stop coming here.
Richard
One of the better steakhouses in the northern suburbs. One of the characteristics I love most is that you never feel hurried. Unlike some other place in the environs, I love the sense that your table is yours for the night and there's no pressure to move on so the owner can make more profit. Good job LG!
K
Quality steaks; extensive sides to choose from; great atmosphere and service; and the best Kir Royale cocktails. The desserts let them down though (a bit synthetic and stodgy).
AskTheRazz
An amazing place for a fine dining experience and quite the range of main plates considering it's specialized in meat. I had for starters calamari heads one of my the favorite plates in this restaurant & had as well Raw Kudu & salami infused with a delicious beetroot jam & garnish of greens topped with Parmesan cheese. For the main course I was lost what to choose but in the end, I had to try the ostrich meat which perfectly cooked medium had this earthly taste although a bit chewy. In general, my experience here was filled with great taste & brilliant ambiance. The service is quick & waiter extremely friendly, highly recommend this place for meat lovers & exotic dishes.

I came here for a birthday dinner,I was quite excited after reading all the great reviews and couldn't wait to experience this place .

The place gets quite full but the service is excellent . The birthday host had a set menu from the main menu so I didn't get a chance to see the full menu.
We were taken on a kitchen tour to see the different kinds of meat they had ,an explanation of each kind and got to taste the difference between grass fed and grain fed. The staff is so friendly and welcoming . The lighting is dim creating a romantic atmosphere and a bit of soft music in the background .

Whilst placing our orders I had a bit of the bread ,it had a ginger taste to it and I didn't enjoy it .

For drinks I ordered the Kir Royale and a Strawberry Daquiri, the Kir Royale was so yummy the bubbles literally explode in your mouth. The daquiri was just a normal daiquiri nothing special about it .
For food I had grass fed sirloin,I didn't like it. It was a bit tough, didn't have much taste ,was below my expectations I was quite disappointed. I had a bit of other people's food: oxtail ,calamari and it was so delicious wish I had ordered something else instead. The sides come separately, I didn't like the fries they were too crispy for my liking ,the veggies were good and the beer battered onion rings were quite something .
Dessert was a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream,I didn't like the sauce nor the brownie it had nuts and I loathe those .

The one thing that made me give this place a high rating in spite of my dissatisfaction was the Dijion sauce it was heavenly . And tasting a bit of other dishes I could see the potential of this place .

I'd come here again and definitely recommend it as a place for date night rather than a family outing .
The best meal since I arrived in Joberg. The service was amazing. Private tour of meat locker convinced us to order Biltong soup and a whole salami to bring back to the states. We both had grass fed filets and couldn't have been better. Perfectly cooked to our order. Highly recommend.

This is one of those OG steak houses. The minute you step in you want to luxuriate in the old world charm replete with starched napkins and well dressed wait staff. You should order one thing only - steak. They know what they're doing here. Like all OG steak houses, steaks are served alone and sauces, etc are optional/additional. This place is worth the splurge.
Tanya Oosthuizen
Fantastic place, great food, 5 star service and a special x-factor... The senior manager really took special care of us. Good selection of wine.
Best steak house visited thus far.

This is one of the go to steak houses, when walking in you feel a great sense of an established experienced establishment, the experience is great when taken on the kitchen tour, they show you the meat cuts and ageing process as well as the cooking process etc,
There are 2 meat choice for most cuts, grain fed and gras fed. The grass fed a little pricier, please note the flavours are different and so is the texture, I speak on fillet, grain much softer, grass less tender with texture and an unusual taste, the management happily exchanged my grass for grain cut as I like tenderness
The fillet on the bone is definitely something to try, this looked great and was enjoyed by the other diner
All in all highly recommended, as is the Wagyu biltong
Patrick Ndungu
Was looking forward to eating at this joint since they serve grain fed and grass fed steaks. Unfortunately I was somewhat disappointed with my steak. Ordered the grass fed rib eye, the cut looked unusual to me, bit uneven, separated from the bone (almost like it had been run over) and suspiciously dry. Anyway dug in and sadly had to work on the piece of meat (no longer worthy of the title). Besides being a little chewy, it tasted like the animal had put up a fight, and somehow that lingering bitterness came through in the meat. Good amount of salt helped, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that the tepid temperature, shabby appearance, and lack of sweet juice were a result of something that had been sitting in the kitchen longer than it should have... If they are around in 10 months or so, maybe I will give them a second chance at redemption.

My boyfriend and I went here after our dinner plans fell through at another restaurant. After being turned away from 2 other restaurants as we didn't have a reservation we went into The Local Grill expecting the same outcome however we were greeted by the smiley Innocence who insisted that a space could be made to accommodate us. YAY! We ordered drinks and starters and Innocence happily answered all our questions and gave us some excellent suggestions. I had a strawberry daiquiri and we shared the calamari starter which was good. I ordered the grass fed sirloin and my boyfriend ordered the grain fed so we could taste the difference. The steak was absolutely perfectly done :') I could have probably cut through it with a butter knife and am currently salivating just thinking about it. The beer battered onion rings and mushroom sauce were perfect accompaniments. After supper was done I kind of wished we could rewind and eat that delicious food again! Oh, and to top it all off Innocence took us on a kitchen tour where you can cook your own steak on Himalayan salt. We WILL be back soon!

Food - 3.5/5.0
Service - 3.0/5.0
Atmosphere - 3.5/5.0

Ordered steaks and chops, both were good however the steak was not done as ordered which left me a bit disappointed. Otherwise overall a good experience.

We had one of our best dinner dates at the Local Grill Park Town North. The steaks were delicious. The steak appreciation course in the kitchen was enlightening and we were treated to a surprise Biltong soup. Stella Atois on tap in the kitchen while we learnt about wet and dry aged steak and the aging process. The hospitality from Steven was warm and kind. We even received a surprise bottle of wine at the end just before we departed for home, just for having a great time. It was our best dining experience. Romantic & delightful on all accounts. Thank you Steven for making it super special.

Now anyone who knows me will know I'm a loyal turn 'n tender girl, however I was beyond blown away with the exceptional service we received at this particular local grill.

We were a table of six with a very different large order and everything came exact to order. We were beyond well treated by our extremely polite server who was friendly and efficient.
The manager was also spectacular, bring it my boyfriends graduation dinner he was kind enough to gift him a gorgeous bottle of wolftrap red (which was thoroughly enjoyed)
The chocolate pudding was hands down the best I have ever had most high compliments to the chef it was so well enjoyed.
The food the service the ambiance all added to an incredible evening very impressed.

This place was very appealing to me. From the moment you walk in, you feel the warmth of the place from the managers to the waiters. I enjoyed the tour to the kitchen and the biltong that we tasted. I've been there a couple of times and I've enjoyed the ribs, the fillet as well as the brisket :). All are very enjoyable

Been to this spot for the second time now and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love that they cater for Halaal and that the kitchen and pans are totally separated from the rest. The Grain fed beef sirloin , rib eye , fillet and rump is what we ordered. It was Cooked to perfection , I honestly can not fault the dish. Paired it with some fries and onion rings accompanied with a sweet and spicy Madagascan peppercorn sauce , it's truly amazing. Staff is friendly too. I just attended the kitchen tour and it was really interesting

Phoning to make a booking was painful as the waiter who answered the call couldn't speak properly nor spell or hear at all as it took me 10min to make 1 booking just to have him put down the phone in my ear.

The ambiance was amazing and we did get a good table but to our surprise got the waiter who assisted us on the phone which made ordering drinks horrific.

We did wait a while before ordering food however once ordered it took 40min for the manager to realize we had not been served. If it wasn't for the manager we might have left hungry since our waiter was hardly seen anywhere.

The fillets and mash with spinach and onion rings was incredible and the steak was perfectly cooked. We were then interrupted by our terrible waiter who tried to make as if another waiter assisted us on the phone but seriously I recognized his voice not the guy he said helped us. I don't appreciate it being lied to.

The dessert was ok but not out of this world. Had better peacan nut pie from woolworths and the ice cream was ok nothing amazing.

We were never asked if we wanted coffee and it took another 20 min just to get the bill.

Overall I will be back for the food but will request someone else to assist us next time.
I ordered squid heads for starters and had some lamb shank and then good ole Creme Brûlée. Well, the food was okay. It's not like my world was rocked or ... swayed ... or even took a slight turn left! 😏. So for The Local Grill, it just gets a plain ole okay from me!

After my last meal here which was a disaster, what a change. Both meals , service, dessert and ambiance really good. My wifes fillet , maybe a 3,5 but my sirloin was 5 star. Veggies called for more and dessert was pure decadence. Offered a bottle of wine oth which was appreciated. Will be back definitely. Service right up there
Totally blown away at how awesome this restaurant is. How did it take me 10 years to come back here? We wanted some comfort food and they had oxtail on the menu so from there on it was an easy decision to come here.

Lynette was our waitress and what a darling. Matthew the manager showed us around their test kitchen and also the walk-in fridge. Shared a few cooking tips and made us super excited about the beef appreciation sessions they have where customers can come and learn a thing or two. Also met the owner.

We had the ribeye on the bone and oxtails. Watch out for the chalk board: it explains how long they have aged certain cuts. They also have a nice wine and whiskey selection (not just Jameson, you know!!) and the booze is honestly so reasonably priced.

Here is the one thing: The food was only good. The ribeye was a bit chewy with sinew. The taste was great. The creme brûlée was runny and not set. The oxtail was define, although with lots of bones. We didn't mention this to the mamager as we were hungry and tired to get home, and it wasn't that off putting for us to make a fuss. But it was tasty and the whole experience wants us to come back again for sure. Everything was good enough for me to give them 4 stars!
Philippe Frydman
Had some family visiting that wanted a good steak. So decided to take them to have a great meat experience. From the arrival the staff was super attentive. Before chosen our meal we were treated to a tour of the test kitchen and holding facility. The explanation of the different type of cooking method and grain fed vs free range km pressed all of us. Started with some salads and biltong then the rib eye cooked blue as it should be. For the wine connoisseurs the choice is limitless. Definitely deserving they Steakhouse of the Year awards
Jared Cavé
I'm a regular here and am always very happy with the whole experience. I went last night for a quick impromptu meal and once again everything was top notch. Service was great as usual, from the waiter and management but we had a fantastic Sirloin that was aged longer than usual. It was great to go to a place where I know the steak is good and still be further impressed.
Zach Masondo
Good food! Good service!

Enjoyed the grain fed Tbone! Well seasoned and tasty!

The location is king and Milton delivered on the service front, my wife and I enjoyed ourselves!

Compliments to the Chef!
Patric
Really enjoy it, a bit crowded and parking problems. Great range of steaks. I will be back. If you dont book a table before hand it does become a problem to get in

I have to say that I was really blown away! Very rare that one gets a tour of the restaurant let alone the meat section. The food and staff were amazing, the wine, everything! Thank you for a wonderful time. I'll be back like yesterday!
Jacques Wentzel
Great steaks and very nice interior. I like how you have a selection between grass and grain fed beef. The kitchen tour was offered on the night and it was very insightful and made the night all the better. They also have a good wine selection which paired well with the red meat.
Ilan Ben-David
Service is Excellent, the manager Jarrod is by far the most outgoing, friendly and hard working manager I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Loves what he does, and it shows. Very refreshing to go into a restaurant where it seems as if every staff member is happy. Food was delicious, quite pricey, but you get what you pay for. A nice tour of the kitchen and to see how things get done. Highly highly recommend
No Time To Waste
Service was friendly and attentive. The kitchen tour was offered which we declined.
Steaks were cooked to perfection with a nice selection of sides.

Added to my list of go to steakhouses in JHB.

Solid
Jill Nudelman
I come here often for their ostrich medallions which are the best I've ever tasted and I love the generous portion of their cranberry sauce. You can choose between grain fed or grass fed beef and you're invited into the kitchen for a tutorial on their cooking methods and their beef's provenance probably although I've never taken them up their offer because I prefer to see my food cooked and on a plate than hanging on a hook. Tonight, we had a lovely if totally overpriced bottle of 2012 Keet First Verse, of which we alerted the friendly owner, Steve, who thanked us for pointing out its high price and assured us he'd investigate. Nice vibey place if cow skins pinned to the wall for decoration get your goat. If they upset you, don't go!
Carlo Fortugno
Best meat in Johannesburg. I had a fillet on the bone and it was superb-tender and flavoursome. Service was attentive and the place is extremely well priced with excellent wine selection.
Claudia Nel
Rated one of the top steak restaurants in South Africa , it is not hard to see why.

Friendly staff, great service and a kitchen tour explaining (very passionately) about the aging process and the difference between the different kinds, cuts and cooking styles of meat.

Owner and chef are interested in finding and exploring different cooking styles and their nose to tail approach in cooking satisfies my eco green side as well as the option of grass fed and pasture reared meat.

We shared the meat platter for two after the chicken liver and kudu sausage starters. We followed this with the chocolate truffles and a cheese platter and happily rolled to the car.

The wine list is good and you can even book dinner in the wine room.

Staff are well educated in the food ethos and are able to answer any questions you may have on the steak and the restaurant.

You don't last 14 years in the food industry in Jozi without a good product. The Local Grill is a must stop! Drink, eat, enjoy, repeat!
Greg
Very good! Love the kitchen and meat tour, nice little touch! The food is always good and service generally likewise!!!! One of the better steak houses around!!!!

What an absolute peach of a Restaurant! Whether you consider yourself to be a beef connoisseur or just simply enjoy a great steak every so often, this will become your go to steakhouse. A simply superb dining experience that was accompanied by an educational kitchen tour where you'll learn about the meat ageing process, a variety of cooking techniques including the use of Himalayan salt slabs and Oaked wood. To top it off u'll get to sample a heavenly piece of Wagyu biltong that is like nothing I have ever tasted (ensure you don't ask to have the fat cutoff).

The steak menu itself is simply sizzling with a host of wet-aged vs dry-aged options combined with grass fed vs grain fed cuts. The sides that accompany your sumptuous cut of beef are equally delicious with the polenta and cumin dusted onion rings a certain highlight. This coupled with the trio of sauces option is great for someone who wants to try a few of the brilliant side sauces on offer.

After such a brilliant main course, one could have been forgiven if the dessert hadn't lived up to the same standard. But guess what, IT DOES and in great fashion too!! The creamy home made cookies and cream ice-cream paired with the salted caramel was brilliant and rounded off an unforgettable night out. The service was equally impressive accommodating our every request with a smile, good attitude and timeous response.

The Local Grill, you have a new fan and I can't wait to dine with you again.

Fantastic night out on our anniversary date. My partner is a beef fanatic so he thoroughly enjoyed the kitchen walk through which was a nice addition to the experience. Unfortunately I've been ill so I did not get an opportunity to try out the wine list but I was presently surprised to find that they served cap classique by the glass...it's very rare. Liver stack for starters was average. I expected more for being adventurous enough to try their pork neck as it turned out average as well. Nonetheless my partner shared his Rump steak which never disappoints. Pap fries were also quite impressive. Overall, great night out.
Shaun Swartz
Without a doubt the best steakhouse in Johannesburg with a variety of meat from grain-fed to grass fed. The service and meal was impeccable would highly recommend the fillet followed by the bread and butter pudding
Kelebogile Mofokeng
Never disappoints. A must experience if you are serious about your steak ⚡⚡⚡ An educational experience on wine and good meat. Definitely coming again and again and again etc

An excellent evening! My partner and I came here for our anniversary and were not disappointed. The kitchen tour was an unexpected, educational and much appreciated bonus. Meanwhile the meat (and vegetables!) were delicious and the service excellent. We would definitely return.

The most disappointing restaurant experience of my life. I had booked for my anniversary dinner for 8pm. I arrived on time to be told by the waiter that my table will be ready shortly if we could pleas wait at the bar and order a drink in the meantime. 20 minutes passed and we were now told that the customers at our table haven't left yet and he has no idea why? As if customers are allocated a time period for having their dinner. We were offered our drinks and given a menu to look at in the meantime. A further 25 minutes passed and we had, had enough. We left and walked up the road to Full Stop Cafe where we were welcomed with open arms. During this time not one manager came up to us to explain the situation. It was just very unprofessional and not something you expect from your "upperclass" restaurants. Needless to say I will not be going back there anytime soon.

A lovely evening. Our three guests from Sicily were super impressed with the food & the service. It was their first time tasting Ostrich & Kudu!

It's easy for a steakhouse to have premium cuts (think Wagyu, etc) as their speciality calling cards and to skimp on the more standard ones (the humble sirloins, etc). At the local grill, the same cannot be said, since even their entry level cuts are anything but standard! The meat is simply succulent, delicious, generous, impeccably prepared and served with a smile in a comfortable setting. What more can a carnivore like me ask for? And my wife and daughter love it too!!

Highly rated, and I feel that it has what it takes. Arrived at 21h15 (kitchen closes at 22h), and maybe for that reason the service was sped up more than I would have liked. The waiters were just too anxious to see me go.

Will give it another go though.

As far as steakhouses go, I don't know if there's anywhere better! The selection of different cuts, age, grass fed etc etc.. The options are endless. Steak was perfectly cooked to my liking.. These guys know what they are doing!!

One of the owners also took us on a tour of the test kitchen where they educate people of the ageing process and the various cooking methods. They use Himalayan salt rocks to cook their steaks on, which seasons them to perfection.

What a great experience!! Worth every cent...

One of the best places in Johannesburg to eat a good steak. My personal recommendation: blue cheese sauce. The best one I have tried in South Africa. Great service

What?
Upmarket, excellent meat, a decent wine list, a reasonable beer selection and good service. The wet-aged rump, Drifter Cape Town Blonde and Saxenburg Merlot all went down like bricks on speed on this particular occasion.

Why?
Because you're either South African and you know what great steak is supposed to be, or you're not and you want to find out.

When asked for recommendations, our waiter did not immediately default to the most expensive thing on the menu. He took into account where which of their steaks were on their aging table and recommended rump rather than fillet, grain-fed rather than grass-fed. That's what service is about! Are you listening, Charles from Milhaus?

What else?
Take the kitchen tour to learn more about meat, how it is aged and the different cuts. Also try their expensive, but excellent, biltong. At your request and a nominal fee they'll close off a section of the restaurant for you so you can have a private party or a small gathering of friends.

Dish cleanliness rating: 10/10. At last a restaurant that doesn't make you clean your own dishes before you eat.

I hosted a business dinner in the wine room a few weeks back and was thoroughly impressed with the impeccable service from the staff and management at The Local Grill. I cannot thank Steven and Llewy enough as my clients are still raving about their experience. This definitely goes down as one of Jozi's finest restaurants in my book, definitely the best steak house and well deserving of its awards! The beef experience in the cold room was informative, memorable and such a fun element to add to the dinner. I will definitely be back often. Well done guys!

What an experience! Once we were seated and received our drinks, one of the chefs came around and asked if we'd like a look into the kitchen... Of course we did!!! He explained how they cook meat and the different types of aging etc. wow this was interesting. The men also really enjoyed it! So after that, our mouths were watering. I must say, the steaks did not disappoint! An all round enjoyable evening! Oh, and I can't wait to go back to try their desserts (what a selection)!

10.06.2016. Recently friends and I were wanting a good piece of steak. I was always fond of the boksurg branch and loved having the fillet and beer battered onion rings so naturally that's what I leaned towards on the night.

The place was packed and the waiter was efficient. However I was slightly disappointed with my meal. My calamari starter was rather bland and slightly mushy to eat. My cosmopolitan was also lacking and was told there is a new barman on duty.

Before our mains we did the tour of the kitchen, and it was interesting to hear some of the details given.

Onto my fillet steak, it was cooked correctly but it was stringy and chewy and it just spoilt the taste.

I had high hopes from all the rave reviews but will give them another try.

We went to The Local Grill last night for the first time and had the most incredible time.
The service was fantastic and the food simply divine! The steak my boyfriend had was cooked to perfection as was my grilled chicken (yes, they do fantastic chicken too!)
And who knew french beans could be so tasty?
It is a little on the pricey side but with such great food and service, it's difficult to take issue with this.

I've been here twice, most recently before Youth Day where my partner and I both had the 200g fillet. Everything, from the service to the meat to the extras was outstanding. Best steak place I've been to in Johannesburg. They only lose out on a 5 because the napkins aren't cloth ;)

Had a lovely evening at the Local Grill. Decided to brave the cold and venture out for some good grub and really happy I did. Steaks were some of the best I've had and cooked to absolute perfection.

Booked a table for 10 for Rod's birthday weekend.

What a pleasure.

Rubbed shoulders with a celebrity on walking through the door. :) #chefstephenbillingham

Got to take a tour of the kitchen and colddroom. Extremely exciting for myself and the friends I invited.

Great place for special occasions!

Amazingly well prepared food. Obviously most of us enjoyed a steak. Fillet won #bestcut for the night. But each one of us enjoyed our meals to the fullest.

Thank you guys for a wonderful evening out!

Date night! Even though it's less than 500m from my house. I ve for some reason avoided local grill. Way was I wrong. From the moment we entered till we left, we won the waitstaff lottery everyone was friendly and service was efficient and to point.
The menu is perfect and surprisingly well priced. I love the fact that one has a choice of how your cut was aged.
Our steaks were cooked to perfection. Perfectly rare steak and no blood.
Our sides were tasty and well cooked.
Wine list is diverse and well selected. Including a good selection of craft beer.
Coffee was nothing to write home about.
So all in all great night, great ambiance service on point well, well worth a stop.
Just a note the zamoto menu is outdated.
We were on a mission to find the best steak in JHB.
The Local Grill is top 5 of our personal list of steak restaurants. We keep going back, and the food remains top notch!
Service is great as well. Everyone is so friendly.
Great quality, good prices, very relaxed ambience.

Service is very professional - top class. They offer "grainfed" or "grassfed" beef. I had a fillet but it was delivered rare rather than medium which is what I ordered. However the meal was delicious and they have the world's best chocolate brownie dessert.
Andrew
Excellent food and great service. Pork ribs and mini waffle were excellent. Good selection on ice cream. Waiter and manager were really good. Will be back.
Jonathan Quirk
My fiancé and I had a fantastic meal there last night. Good atmosphere and service. We had the ribs and steak tartare , both were excellent.

My only criticism is to Zomato because the menu you have is outdated. So update your shit yo!

We love The Local Gril! I've never sat there and thought "this is mediocar", the steaks are really some if not the best I've had. The staff is attentive and quick and the host really makes an effort with the guest to make them feel welcome and add that extra touch of hospitality.
The atmosphere is relaxed and not overly fancy, with just the right amount of cosy. In terms of value for money, you get what you pay for. Worth every rand.
The Local girl is really one of our favourites. @

Probably the best sauce I have had in a steak house👌 blue cheese and Camembert! I would recommend this restaurant based just on the sauce, but that would then make it seem like the food wasn't good. This isn't the case, the steak was delicious and my sautéed veggies just finished everything off! Nice intimate setting in the bustling street of 7th avenue👍 definitely worth a visit.
Andy Turton
A superb cook on the very best of steaks. Newcomers can enjoy a tour of the larder, exploring cuts of various age, and innovative cooking methods. The wine menu is excellently populated with a plethora of delicious labels.
Expect one of the best steaks in Joburg. The on-the-bone ribeye is particularly notable.
Robert Bromley
Excellent food, Great People, Great evening! Everything was brilliant from start to finish. Our waitron was kind and very helpful and when our food arrived it was brilliant again. I'll definitely be back!
Jenny Taylor
Very pleasant atmosphere. Service was efficient without being interruptive. From a value for money perspective definitely up there. The oxtail was a sizable portion and very tasty. The steak was cooked to perfection and the sides to both dishes were perfect - veg and onion rings. Went back the next night, it was that good.

We booked a table for 8 30. It has been raining all day so we were informed as we arrived (on time) that there will be a 30 - 45 minute wait because they had to move ppl who had booked outside to the inside area. as compensation we were given biltong. Made us stand at the bar and didnt even offer a free round of drinks. Finally 35 minutes later, we sat down and I must have ordered my drink 3-4 times. The waiters were useless. Our food took long and we ordered main course, they forgot to bring the mushroom sauce which I had to ask for and came 5 minutes after our meat had arrived. Overall, just a poor experience and I certainly won't be rushing back.

I've been looking forward to eating here for a few weeks already but unfortunately my experience did not live up to expectations.

Our waiter made out as if he couldn't care less about us or any of our questions. Our meal was below average. We had very simple dishes, rump and fillet with a mushroom sauce and a side of spinach and butternut. The meat was definitely not A-grade, the sauce tasted as if if was store bought (thank goodness it came on the side) and the side of spinach and butternut were really really sad.

I will not be visiting again.
Nicola Hemsley
Wow, such an incredible place, our waiter Malusi sold us on the food and the entire experience. We order a steak platter and each piece of steak was equally as amazing, the meal was cooked to perfection. Definitely will be back! Fantastic service from Malusi and fantastic food!
Jan
Wow, definitely one of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time. The food was superb, and cooked to perfection. The sides were very tasty and well presented. Great wine menu to accompany the food, service was friendly and efficient. Will definitely be back again soon!
Herro This Is Shitty Wok
This place is phenomenal. One of the best services I have had in a while. Took my fiancé there for her birthday dinner and they treated us like we have been there a hundred times and it was our first time there. Definitely will recommend this place to anyone that will like to have a romantic dinner. Great ambiance and even better food. No complaints what so ever!!!!

Their service is amazing. The waiters and waitresses understand their offerings and their recommendations are good, coupled with a friendly touch. The food, wow!, gotta try it yourself

This is very nice place to enjoy you beef. The manager was very kind to ask the main chef to show me the kitchen and the meets. Wow that was a lovely touch by them. The Chef showed me the different meats and recommend us a 51 days dry aged T-bone steak. Well we trusted him and the meat had superb flavor. Perfectly cooked medium rare with a nice bottle og Iona One Man Band wine with great sides especially the green beans with garlic and spices. Wonderful dinner
Claudia McGregor
Wow that steak is pretty special! The tour through the fridge is a vegetarians worst nightmare though LOL! Service was excellent and great to know you can order meat from them for home as well.
Andrew Clare
Great steaks as always. The prawns were very disappointing. Service a bit slow compared to previous visits. Still one of the best, if not the best steakhouse in Jozi. Wine selection very comprehensive, great reds.
Iman Haffajee
Super delicious and excellent service makes Local Grill a favourite. Had a 200gr fillet with rub and mash. Couldn't have been cooked better. It didn't even need a sauce but ordered a trio of sauces to go with it anyway.
Have a 1.5year old toddler and the staff really made us feel welcome. A bonus is the kitchen tour, to learn about the meat etc
Noni Demetriou
Great steaks. Great service. A bit over priced but I think it is better than the grill house everything was cooked to perfection and tasted delicious
Philip The Foodie
The Local Grill is consistently good. It's one of the few places I return to again and again. Our most recent visit, mid-week, saw the restaurant busy and buzzy. Staff were, as always, pleasant and attentive.

Our party of six enjoyed oysters and great steaks. My first choice of steak - a sirloin on the bone - wasn't available as they didn't have one suitably aged. They take the aging of their steaks as seriously as the cooking. A t-bone instead was delicious. The Mont du Toit red we chose was a great wine match. All in all another great night at The Local Grill. We will be back.
Alma Prinsloo Pentz
We had a nice dinner during loadshedding. My husband had the 300g fillet, which was good , but not the best. I had a schnitzel which was very good. The service was good and the staff friendly.

We will definitely be back
Craig Nicholson
Fabulous steaks and delightfully friendly management. The kitchen tour was interesting and unexpected. The green bean side is delicious!

Only negative was phoning to reserve a table; was put through to three people and was hard to communicate.
Arnaud
Fantastic restaurant, with the right size, excellent service, and -Oh my God- the best fillet steak ever tasted. To die for! We keep returning as we have found no match in Joburg so far.
