The views from the deck of La Vierge are breath-taking. You can literally see Hemel en Aarde and the sea in the distance. It's beautiful. Their platters also looked exceptional. (We didn’t order one as we just had breakfast in town.)
Sadly, the wine didn't suit our palettes, which was a bit of a disappointment. But seeing that wine tasting is something entirely subjective, I'm still giving them a 4 star review. Our sommelier was very knowledgeable about the wines and we still had an enjoyable experience. That view really is worth it.
My families old favorite B's steak restaurant is now permanently at La Vierge. Still the best steak in town (and maybe even South Africa) but I do miss the option of being able to have mash or another form of starch. Very small and limited menu but it isn't an issue for my fam cause we always order steak and it's always cooked to perfection. Due to my excitement to eat I forgot to photograph my main meal which was fillet with blue cheese sauce and it was amazing! We shared lemon meringue for dessert and that was a winner too! Luckily I took a pic before the greediness kicked in! Will be back!
Spent the weekend in Hermanus and chose to start our day at La Vierge. The two ladies working there were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the valleys and surrounding wine region. They took us through the six white wines they had to offer, explaining that the valley dedicates itself to nature, creation, heaven, earth and seduction.
✔ friendly service
✔ beautiful setting
✔great wine
Stopped in on Sunday with friends. Shared their varietal platter and lamb knuckle ravioli with my partner and paired it with the Jezebel Chardonnay. The food was divine but unfortunately the service was lacking and somewhat unfriendly. Lynne Marie Fraser
Stopped at this "new" wine estate as part of the Hermanus Winehoppers tour. I had never heard of this estate and am really glad I found it.
The winemaker/owner must really have a very good/naughty sense of humor as the wines have such unique names - Original Sin, Jezebel, The Affair, Nymphomane, etc. and the decor is so interesting with early shades, enhanced with shocking pink, but it works so well. The views are just amazing and can be enjoyed from the tasting room in a cold day or the massive patio in a hot day,
The wines are really worth while tasting and is available at most large cities and liquor stores.
Really interesting and worth while visiting. They also have a restaurant.
After quad biking with the family in this beautiful valley (Hemel en Aarde) it was a perfect ending to find ourselves at La Vierge. Ambience was inviting and comfortable, the views spectacular and the staff (including the owner Yusuf) friendly, professional and efficient. We started off sharing a cheese platter which included some cured meats and we also has a calamari and prawn starter. Very good and the calamari was melt in the mouth. For our mains I had to send the line fish of cobb and my son's sirloin back as it was overdone and dry. But our waitron immediately whipped it away with an apology and it was replaced promptly. Our food was delicious and I think I had the best chocolate fondant ever....still thinking about it.
Awesome awesome restaurant! I'd strongly recommend it to anyone making a trip to Hermanus. From starters all the way until desert everything was excellent, good wine too! I'd recommend the mussels for starters, and the lamb or steak for mains!
I really enjoyed La Vierge today. The highlight is the view (the men's bathroom view must be a contender for best ablution vantage point), but the food and service are not bad either. Their kids meals were excellent - prepared with more attentiveness than I've seen elsewhere. The rest was a little hit-and-miss and it all felt like it was just a little more expensive than it should be. It's acceptable though, once the setting is factored in. I wouldn't drive from Cape Town for this, and there are mote places in the hemel-en-aarde valley to try (which I have not yet done), but I wouldn't oppose eating there again.
I've been to La Vierge for a wine tasting twice and my experience has been a mixed bag. The first time was in the winter of 2015 and we were fortunate enough to have a very knowledgeable lady walk us through the tasting. She even let us taste wines that weren't actually on the tasting menu. And I actually learnt a lot from the experience! Our second visit recently was a bit disappointing as the person who was serving us wasn't as knowledgeable. He was also difficult to understand and really just poured us the wine without really saying anything. We even had to ask what we were tasting, that's how little communication we received! However, we ordered a cheese platter to go with our tasting and it was quite nice. Especially the chutney! I would recommend La Vierge as a stop on the Hemel and Aarde valley wine route if you haven't been, but having been twice, I don't think I will return again.
I return here on my annual vacation over several years now and have not yet been disappointed. Excellent restaurant, wonderful views (and probably the gents loo with the best view in any restaurant 😆). Great menu, stunning food and beautifully plated. The waitstaff are prompt, friendly and helpful. The wine list is relatively simple but won't disappoint - excellent choices and very well priced.
