After a delicious wine tasting we were spoiled with a delicious Food and wine pairing - one of my favorite wine farms. Views are incredible and the decor is not bad on the eyes either 😉
We went to the Restaurant at the Newton Johnson whilst taking a short excursion to the Hemel en Aarde wine region of Hermanus.
The vineyard is beautiful with sprawling views of the Overberg and Hermanus shore.
The restaurant is quite new so the menu is fairly limited but everything we tasted was truly delicious. The seared tuna starter was perfectly cooked and the linefish main came with the most delicious Cape Malay sauce.
I had heard Newton Johnson was popular for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir so we sampled some wines before selecting a bottle. I must say I am not at all knowledgeable about wines but my mom in law knows her stuff and she was quite disappointed by the fact that the tasting room did not change tasting glasses between wines and did not speak in much technical detail about the wines. Perhaps due to my naivety shining through.
Nevertheless we had a great day and I would certainly go back.
Picture perfect views over the hemel en aarde valley and wines to match. A new restaurant to complement the wine offerings looks to be a real winner. Well worth a visit.
Perfect setting in the heart of "Hemel en Aarde". Once you've had the opportunity to adjust to the reality of the view, you are overwhelmed by the cuisine. When the bread is served you already know you are in for a journey never to forget. I had the chateaubriand for mains which was impeccable. Cheese platter for desert. If lunch is in this category then I can only imagine what dinner would be like. Definitely one of my SC (Southern Cross) restaurants. Well deserved place as a top 10 SA restaurant.
My boyfriend and myself went to dinner here today, superb food, fantastic service and an amazing view. I loved this place, we will be back soon. Thank you!
The Restaurant is set on the Newton Johnson wine estate in be gorgeous Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Hermanus. The view from the restaurant is spectacular, truly, and is hard to beat. The restaurant itself has a modern, but warm feel to it and is quite small which promotes a more intimate feeling and the kitchen is very open plan where you can watch the chef's work their magic. I loved the overall experience, although here were a few things that missed the mark for me, the service being one of them. It was slightly clumsy and there were a few times that we had to call attention to our table rather than the attention to detail being offered which is what one nifty expect from such an establishment. The food was good, the portions were of a good size and I really enjoyed it all. Although the meal was not perfection, it was tasty and well executed and was washed down with some of the best Pinot Noir in the country (Newton Johnson of course).
Booked early to get a reservation at the restaurant and glad we did! The view alone is worth it, it was a rainy day but still the view and surrounding were amazing. Nothing on the starter menu took our fancy so we opted for the two course main and desert. I tried the lamb which was delicious and my partner had the duck which was also great. The soufflé for dessert was delicious but didn't have quite the strong dark chocolate flavor I expected. The other dessert was interesting. The service and wine were awesome and it is definitely worth the visit.
I love how the chef is exploring with awesome flavours and exciting concepts. The welcome bread was out of this world good. Freshly baked and warm with delicious aioli. Something really interesting was the tagliatelle spaghetti made from sweet onion...devine!!
It is such an amazing venue, you overlook the Hemel and Aarde wine valley and all the decor is simplistic, which keeps the attention on the food, wine and view.
The service is SO good, they explained the meals perfectly and just seemed so happy to be there. A real show of teamwork too.
I would really highly recommend this restaurant if you are staying in the overberg, you won't be disappointed.
We went to have lunch at this eatout "top 10" restaurant. the view and setting was fantastic. the mountains, vineyards and mountains look dramatic. starters and deserts were good to very good (tomato veloute and millefeuille) and the main course (hake) was average. the service was also average with long waits for wine and very irritating was that we waited 45 mins for bread that arrived almost simultaneously with the starters... timings were off. but overall it was agood experience and i would recommend it and will be back.
Fantastic restaurant! Have never had a disappointing meal here. Food is fresh, bold and tasty. Their garden salad is a winner and they change their menu regularly so you even if you make it a weekly visit you can eat something new and exciting each time.
