Tant Malie se Winkel is a restaurant with a difference: You can eat from the usual restaurant menu, but you also have the option of cooking your own on an open fire. The vast majority of patrons choose the latter, and Tant Malie se Winkel has a vast outdoor shady space where people can sit under shady trees, take in the view of the Magaliesberg valley (just below the dam wall) and grill their own meat.
We opted for the latter, and were not disappointed. A base cover charge is levied for supporting menu items such as 6 fresh salads, pap & tomato gravy, home baked bread with butter and an assortment of homemade jams. These are provided "buffet style", help yourself. Then comes the meat selection, priced "a la carte", which everyone chooses for themselves, straight from the "butchery". Meat selection is good, only outdone by the exceptional quality of the cuts. Beef, lamb, chicken and various sosaties and homemade boerewors are on offer. I'd recommend the boerewors as I consider it to be among the top 3 in the country. My group selected butterflied fillet steak, T-Bone steak, Fillet sosaties and of course, the boerewors.
When we got back to our table, the drinks had arrived (they have a reasonable winelist), and the fire had been provided by a helper (who had arrived with a wheelbarrow full of hot glowing coals). Because my group mostly preferred medium-rare, we didn't waste time putting the coals to work and grilling (braaing) the meat. It's great having a fire so nearby the table, because a piece that turns out to be too rare can either be done further, or even warmed up if you are a slow eater and it has cooled down too much. Plates are the enameled tin variety which contributed to the rustic experience. My group all enjoyed the boerewors and sosaties, and the fillet steak simply melted in our mouths. T-bones were also very tender and flavourful.
After lunch, we explored the desert menu (Melktert), and had coffee in enameled tin mugs.
Pricing is comparable with all other restaurants (i.e. do not expect a discount because you cooked the meat yourself).
A great way to spend a lazy afternoon -- will be back.
Proper South African cuisine
Good food, freshly baked breads, and homemade jams you can buy from the shop
Very good, and mostly good service!
Good breakfasts!🍴
You should really take your time when you visit this jewel in Harties. The food is delicious just like granny cooked it and there is a good variety on the menu. Staff is friendly and service is good. You can also buy some tasty rusks, weskus bokkoms and all sorts of other goodies in the shop.
Best time to go is on a Sunday where you sit and your fire is made for you and your meat is brought and you can prepare it yourself. Not disabled friendly at all as i have a disabled daughter. But its got the Boere feel and ambiance. Very lovely. And don't forget to buy one of Tant Malies' boer brode
Exactly what I expected. Great quality of service and food. Braai'ed like a king.
A great outdoor ambience with the real Boere Braai Manier. People laughing, fires smelling like heaven itself and the smell of meat grilling just results in that "We have to this again soon" feeling.
God Bless Tan Malie
A cool spot to visit if you are out this side. Had a great burger and chips. There is an option to choose your own meat and they set up a braai for you so you can cook. It's much bigger than it looks. Staff were very friendly!
A nice family and traditional african Restaurant close to Hartebeespoort Dam with a very peacefull vibe to it and safe parking. It feels like being on a farm. The staff and waiters are very friendly and helpfull. The Restaurant menu have a large variety of hot and cold beverages of which you much try the "moer koffie". We had "Tant Malie se burger" with chips that was ver tasty and filling. You must try the milk or lemon merinque tart for desert. You can also try the very tasty tripe or "kaiings"and pap for a more traditional meal. For those who would rather have a delicious braai lunch they serve pap, sauce, salads and your choice of braai meat. Definitely very tasty, filling at very reasonable prices. You can also book your work function here. At the shop you can buy any of the large variety sweets, dried fruit, biltong, dried wors, home made cookies, home made rusks, traditional home made jams and freshly baked farm bread.
It is a nice place. We ate breakfast here. The prices are a bit high for the portions that you get, but either than that, enjoyed the outdoor seating.
Heritage shop close to hartebeespoort dam.If in the area pop in to see some nostalgic items.
Nostalgic little gem with true South African ambience. Small museum on-site as well explaining a little bit of history. Coffee served in enamel mugs (boeretroos). Also found Chappies there which I have not seen in 20 years. Definitely worth a stop when you are in the region.
Great place to spend an afternoon. The DIY braai option is not cheap but well worth it. Awesome tranquil setting, so hard to believe one is so isolated from the customary traffic just up on the main road.
Good food. Enjoyable experience. Nice and relaxed environment.
Love this place! Great history and staff. The best biltong and droë wors. Highly recommend visiting when in the area.
Good braai At Tant Malie se Winkel.
Good meat and nice salads. pap and home made bread to compliment the meat.
Food was fantastic. Waiter was a bit too chatty. Even though we understand the idea of keeping the look and feel, the place needs some paint. Prices are pretty good. I would go again in a couple of months.
