Review Danny's House Of Curries - Fourways

We enjoy coming here every now and again. We always have the prawn curry. It's great. Hot but not so spicy you get turned off. Our only problem is that we get less prawns, like half, what we used to get after the restaurant was first opened.

I love Danny's, the bunny's are great. I particularly enjoy the mutton bunny and the sugar beans bunny. Everytime we go it is tasty and pretty fast service. It's spicy and tasty which is really nice because I often find that takeout bunnies are either to spicy with no real depth of flavour or lacking in spice. This is the perfect combination of the two and the takeaway boxes are really cool too.

4 stars for the food - it’s the authentic Durban curry. To get the food however , you’ll have to endure long wait times and dim-witted staff. Simply placing an order results in blank stares and confused looks......

New owners and their curries are authentic. Owners mother cooks the food and its amazing. Has original flavour, please don't complain about the strength of the food. It is Indian after all. Definitely eat here again. Major improvement from the previous owner.

Lived in Durban many years ago, can’t forget the Durban curry flavors. When Danny’s opened in Montecasino, this memory of Durban curry comes back vividly. The original owner not bad, new one is even better.

Food was absolutely delicious, the mutton bunny chow was authentic and had all the right flavors. Service was great too, the owner takes the time to meet his customers. I’ll be back!

Living in Cape Town don't get a bunnie often. So being in Joburg had to get one. Pleasantly surprised by Danny's House of Curries mutton bunnie. Taste was great with nice thick gravy and lots of meat not only bones. It even comes in a box so if travelling it can go with you. Great work Danny's.

Authentic Durban curries. Very reasonably priced, a bean bunny chow was only R35 and the mutton bunny was R80. Samoosas, roti, pickles and a herby sour milk. Delicious.
Neelan Naidoo
One of the best places in Gauteng to have an authentic Durban bunny chow! @Danny kudos but how about a wash station to clean up after one of your delicious bunnies?
Omesh Misra
Food was great, just very spicy. Soji was nice. Had the 1/4 Lamb bunny. There should be an option for mild or hot

I always love Danny's. My dad put me on to them. I just wish they'd make fish biryani again. My mans loves it so SO much.
Marcel Meyer
Had a proper Mutton Bunny here, good job!
Krisan Naidoo
We had the Mutton bunny, chicken bunny, mutton mince bunny, and soji for dessert. The food was amazing!! Definitely the best curry in JHB! Big portions as well. Thanks for the good food guys.

Danny's leaves a bad taste in my mouth

On Monday 23/12/2019 at around 5:20 we decided to buy some food to take home. We decided to buy some curry from Danny's House of Curries at Montecasino. It's a small shop with a few tables and looked presentable.
First issues: no samossa's -if it's on the menu, it should be available.
Second issue: only cash accepted. The excuse given was that the card machine was not working. Really? You running a business in an international destination, catch a wake-up. (Maybe an accounting "issue"?)
We really should have seen this as an omen and just walked away but instead order some mutton curry to take away.
Third issue: the manager was not available to sign the receipt to allow entry into the promotional competition.
When we got home, we warmed up the food and that's where the 4th issue surfaced - the food smelled bad. Nothing like a curry at all, not like any food I'd even eaten. I chanced tasting it and what a mistake that was. Would not feed it to animals.
My wife wanted to call the "restaurant" but could not find it listed on the Montecasino websites - why not Montecasino? Embarrassed?
We dailed the number on the receipt and managed to get the managers (Justine) number (she was still not on site).
My wife spoke to Justine and conveyed her unhappiness about the quality of the food. She didn't seemed to bothered and claimed no other complaints had been received that day. How would she know, she wasn't there. When she was challenged to taste the food, she claimed that she didn't eat curry. What!?
Me impression is that shop owner is hustling and it won't last much longer unless they learn a thing or two about quality product and service.

Disappointing, the standards have completely dropped. I tried them a few times in hope it would get better but unfortunately not.

The first time I ate at this outlet, it was amazing, bunnies where really good. Every experience after was a little less good, the last time was very disappointing. The bunnies were dry, bread stale, mutton bunny had more bones than meat, patatoe was hard. Menu wasn’t fully available and it’s already quite a small selection. I really hope standards improve.

On a recent visit, i had prawn chutney with roti and a puri patha starter. Both were very good, especially the prawn. Just the right amount of heat for me.

I used to be a fan of your food. Had a terrible experience yesterday with beans bunny "gone off" and chicken bunny rich in bones and smelling fishy. Good bye Dannys.
Claudette Mangels
yum yum yum... not a fan of curry but this place is rocking my tastebuds... value for money portion size is perfect and its got flavour, so many other places just burn the living hell out of you but Dannys has such a great balance... good job

The food is bad. Just bad. There’s really nothing to add. I am just using up the characters so I can add this comment. They need a new chef and maybe a small miracle

I'm only giving a two because the curry is good. The service is disgustng. I called in to order a take away and took my order and hung up. I then told them that it's rude to hang up on their customers and she just said because it's loud I couldn't hear you. She then rolled her eyes and turned away. Absolutely disgusting, will never buy from them again purely because of the incompetent servers. Well done!
Terry
tried them as it's nice to eat some else's hand cooking but I'm this case I don't like paying for water curry totally disgusted with the way they run their operation.
I have been a frequent customer for the last 8 to 9 months. I currently spend an average of R4000 to R5000 per month and so the staff generally know me well.

On Friday, I took one of my colleagues for dinner. Placed an order for 2 bunny chows with Petra. As usual, I asked for extra salad. When asking for something extra, I’m always happy to pay for it. She then told me that I’m a very rude person and that she offered it to me for free and with love. I felt very insulted. Tried to contact Mr Rodney (Rubentheran Subramoney) Naidoo, the owner twice and he hasn’t bothered to call back.

I suppose a lot can be said about a restaurant by the way the owner conducts himself rather than the staff. Won’t be going back anytime soon!!!

Yes! Finally a place for a decent bunny chow in Jhb. No watered down curry and short cuts with preparation. The curries were full of flavor and portions were good value. I'll happily drive to Monte when I'm feeling for a bunny chow

Bought a takeaway mutton biryani which I took back to the hotel. Upon opening, it was apparent by the smell that the food had spoiled. Tasted a small portion and definitely spoiled so I took it back. These folk clearly have absolutely no idea what customer service is all about. Any other restaurant at Monte would have gladly taken the food back, given you a refund and even offered you a free meal - oh, no, not this crowd. This was a full on retaliation. The cook aggressively said that he cooked at 11h00 and the food was fine (I bought the biryani at 21h30). Then comes his sidekick manager and she also insists that they sold so many portions and the food was fine. I asked her if she tasted it and her answer was no. She then went on to say that the cook did not make the food but someone else did but insisted that the food was fine. I was tired so mustered up my last bit of energy and said to her that if I did not get a refund, I would send it to a contract lab for testing and then report them to the department of health. She told me to do what I wanted. Anyways, after few messages she sent to a person unknown to me, she returned my money. I would never go back there and advise any person who values theirs or they family's health not to eat there either. Besides, a quick peek shows the kitchen leaving much to be desired hence the food quality. This being said, nothing can destroy the reputation of a restaurant (as well as my appetite) than cheap denial, arrogance and customer service. Also, they need to realise that they are not trading in Durban where they opened their first store. The demographics are different. Wake up Dannys House of Curries!!!!! I personally would never set foot in your restaurant again but with the current poor service, you will be closing shop very soon!!!!!!

Bought a mutton bunny on 15 Feb 2018, bread was stale, curry didnt even soke through bread. Mutton curry tasted and looked old. Portion of salad was so little. We pay good money, but receive poor quality food. I do not recommend Dannys.

I ordered the beans bunny chow (sugar beans) - R45 and the mutton bunny chow - R79. It wasn't worth it!! The beans bunny chow had no flavour, extremely bland and no salt. The mutton bunny chow, there were only 2 pieces of meat! But hey I enjoyed the Coke 😅

Best mutton bunny in joburg. It was unexpected and don't think I will go anywhere else. It was delicious, have told most people I know about it.

Danny's house of curries offers a wide variety of Bunny Chow and being a vegetarian i bought one with the small kidney beans. It has great taste and comes with salad which is spicy too. I liked the original bunny chow experience at this place. At Montecasino it had only around 4 tables so you might have to wait or get takeaway because it's difficult to eat bunny chow without a proper sitting arrangement. The shop also offers many other varieties of food. Go try out this place whenever you visit Montecasino. Thanks

We ordered a take away sugar beans bunny chow and I found it to be very average. The curry itself was okay and not as spicy as I would expect. The portions were really big and order was done and waiting for us when we collected.

Excellence tasting food. Prices are cheaper than most other indian restaurant. Will definitely recommend this place. Bunny chow and lamb breyani was divine

Thee best mutton bunny that I've had in a long time! Tasty, fresh and piping hot! Extra gravy, will definitely be going back for more! Finally a place in Jozi for an awesome Bunny chow!

I decided to try Danny's Monte last Friday and I honestly feel that the R70 I paid was a waste of money. Similar to the feeling I get when I play the tables...I went to Danny's 2 years ago to try their bunnies and it was mediocre. I took a gamble with my colleague at work to try the branch in Jhb. I honestly only thought you only lose money on the tables in the casino and not in the food court! If you want a good bunny, go to Currylicious in Ranburg...it's my benchmark store. They are open for at least 3 years and they don't rob you!

Considering that Danny's has the perfect location in Monte Casino, I had really high expectations. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the standards expected from winner of best bunny chow in Durban. We ordered lamb samoosas which were just okay. The mutton bunnies were very dark, almost like the cook is using tamarind (which is usually used in fish curry) and it had a distinct sour fish curry taste to it.
We were very disappointed with our meal and the couple at the table next to us sent their food back. We decided not to finish our meals.

Delicious sugar beans bunny. Keep going back for more. The spice is just right and the packaging is perfect. Haven't tasted a better bunny chow in Joburg. Hope you keep it up 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

Meat and potatoes were tough. Wasn't very good. You don't get served at the table. Had to carry over the counter to table. Found that bizzare for a bunny place.

Ohhh dear. What just happen! !!! So we go to try this new place. Curry was good but the service and ''entertainment'' was unusual. An Indian lady that stood behind the counter constantly starred at us. And then there was a man ( I presume the owner) was very unhappy with one of his staff taking a long toilet break. Very vocal about it. We didn't appreciate that at all. We went out for dinner and certainly didn't want to hear about politics at their work place. Next time we shall buy a take away and sit far far away...

Went here on a Saturday night with some friends and was lucky enough to get the last sugar beans bunny of the night. Friends ordered mutton bunnies. The service was great and friendly and we enjoyed the chat with the owner whilst awaiting our food. Once the food came, it was a different story. The beans tasted burned. The mutton bunnies were drowning in oil and only had 1 piece of edible meat per bunny. The bread seemed like it was out all night waiting to be served and the bread at the bottom of the bunny was thick and dry enough to be sold at Glodina. The extra point are for the friendliness. We think they may have had a rough night so we're planning on trying out the bunnies again shortly after opening hours.

In the hunt for the elusive durban bunny we decided to give Danny's a try (also referred by a friend). Having read some of the previous reviews we prepared for an average experience. The restuarant was fairly busy but we were able to place and receive our order within 10 to 15 minutes. Service was friendly and efficient. We ordered extra gravy with a mutton and chicken bunny and as it was a take-away requested it be packaged separately. Was pleasantly surprised with the deconstructed menu option as most places usually charge for such and also skimp on the gravy. Flavors were great, bread was fresh and the extra sambals were a nice touch. Chicken bunny was a little on the dry side. Menu is being extended so we will definitely be back to try out other options!

Best Bunny Chow Ever! Everything I expected and more. Fresh bread, extra Gravy, soft potato and tender meat with bones as well. Quantity and Quality. Hope they keep the consistency.

I absolutely love the mutton bunnies here. Tastes just like home. Portions are good and the curry was very tasty. This is our new go to curry place whenever we crave Durban curries.

Was very happy to find some authentic Durban curry in Joburg. Bunnies were perfectly packaged for take out. Taste was good but the food caused a lot of stomach discomfort later on. I enjoy spicy food so I can only guess there was a problem with the quality of ingredients.

Thought I would give this spot another try after poor first visit ( mutton bunny chow - dry bread with huge potato ).

This time I gave the prawn curry and rice a try. Unless I lost touch with my Durban roots but curry was way too spicy. Prawn was nuked to death, tasted like someone sent it through a microwave.

Disappointing from Danny who won bunny chow of the year.

Looks like the good food did not travel up with him to Jozi.

Needed a quick snack so popped into Danny's House of curries for some samoosas which sold at R30 for six (any variety), no sweet corn so had to go with potato. This turned out to be extremely bland & tasted of old oil! Left a bad taste in our mouths, had to throw away...

Was really excited to hear that Danny's opened in Johannesburg as their bunnies are very popular in Durban. So off we went bunny chows all round, mutton for my hubby and sugar beans bunny for me. Special request of extra gravy for both bunnies and extra salad, upon arrival home only mutton gravy was given and no extra salad.
Nevertheless we tucked in and nothing spectacular that would make me go back nothing bad. Just bland for my taste.
Might go back and try the burgers if there is a vegetarian option

I have to edit this review as recently I have been hearing great reviews of Danny's from my friends and I decided to go back to try it out. So Saturday night takeaways were 1/4 broad beans bunny for me and 1/4 mutton bunny for hubby. Extra beans gravy and extra salad. They were quick and got the order correct.
Onto the taste, best bunny chow in JHB and I will be back.

Danny's serves authentic Durban curry - their mutton bunny is great!!! Ask for extra gravy :) inside the fresh bread you will find sizeable portions of meat and a potato. The beans bunny is tasty too! Tried out their prawns curry which was ok, a bit bland though. They make different kind of biryanis and curries each day so just check in with them on what's the special of the day.

Enjoyed the mutton bunny chow here, very spicy but very tasty. Appreciate the smaller menu, as that ensures that food is made fresh. No real gripes except that I would prefer a different quality bread (personal preference) and the hand sanitisers at the front were empty and someone should be constantly refilling those. Will be trying the other items on the menu very soon!

Being a lover of curry, was stoked about a new place in the area. Feeling was shortlived. Visited for a takeaway on a Sunday evening. The store was not busy at all but it took almost 15 min to get served with only one customer in front of me. Then the waitress took a while to ring me up when I asked for the tinfish samoosas that were not on the menu. The samoosas in question were really tasty. And that were it ends. We had the mutton bunny chow which was pretty darkly coloured. The gravy tasted ok but the bunny and meat were quite dry. Not amazing. The chicken curry and rice was a shocker. Extremely watery and oily with a weird taste. It was so bad it almost tasted like fish and had lots of chucks of ginger in it. Thoroughly disappointed. Will go back to my usual joints.
Charmaine
The mutton bunny at this place is absolutely fantastic, has a bit of a kick to it though and the meat portion is a bit small. Their samoosas are also really good. Bit pricey though but the flavours are definitely worth it.
