This is our very favorite spot for breakfast, lunch, tea/coffee in Edenvale.
Seating is nicely secluded well above the hustle and bustle of the street. It is very clean; there are excellent staff; there is good, fresh food served in generous portions.
Beckoning with the smell of fresh bread from the bakery below, this whimsical restaurant will mentally transport you to some peaceful polder in the Netherlands. Enjoy!
If you looking for best service with the most friendly people and awesome food...... You found it!!
Lovely bakery in Edenvale
One of those must visit places in the town, its old enough to practically be a historical landmark at this point and has a special place in the hearts of locals around it.
Go for anything, their baked goods -savory and sweet - have a special homey taste to them and they serve some Dutch speciality sweets that are a must have.

Saturday morning pancakes🥞 with cinnamon sugar. Their Custard slices glazed with icing, pineapple danishes, those mini Chicken and mushroom pies and the mini sausage rolls. I can’t tell which one is my favorite. You can taste the quality of the ingredients used.
Ah the heart of Edenvale bakeries! The freshest on the planet but not so sure how I feel about the filling texture of their pepper steak pies. It tasted funny in my mouth but needless to say this place sells the best sausage pies, savoury eclairs, cashew slices - I could go on. I am yet to try out their breakfast menu on top of that iconic windmill on a gorgeous summer's day, over looking Van Riebeck Road! Can't wait :)
De Backery is one of the most genuine bakeries I've been to yet. I have been going for most of my life.
Their croquettes are delicious (but they aren't too happy about giving you the much needed mustard). Chicken pies are small and the perfect snack on the go, and at under R10 they're even better.
Absolutely love them.
De Backery would have Bill Banting turning in his grave!! But 50 plus years on, this special spot has stood the test of time and embraces all the nostalgia of simpler days!
As a little girl, Saturday mornings meant my gran went to the hairdresser and returned (hair perfectly permed) with warm, freshly baked mini sausage rolls and smiley gingerbread men for our breakfast! Today, I managed to reciprocate the deliciousness and hand delivered the same order to my gran, at her retirement home... It was just like 25years ago! Just as tummy & heart warming and just as perfect!
A real authentic Dutch bakery. I love their savory and sweet. Nice fresh rye bread and rolls. The butter chocolate cake is the best. The best sausage rolls in the East.

De Backery or also know as the Windmill is a public icon in Edenvale. My grandparents bought food there in their days. Been there for more than 50 years. Not a very big variety but whatever they make is very good
Only the freshest regardless of what you choose! Themed to be an old Dutch windmill and the staff dress like them too. Fantastic for cakes and pastries, just be careful - it isn't cheap.
The mini-sausage rolls are a must try.
One of Edenvales best kept secrets! This little family run Dutch bakery has been in Edenvale for decades. You will never find a better sausage roll anywhere! Their biscuits are divine as are their pies, breads and cakes. Be sure to buy a couple of the piping hot pancakes for sale just before you reach the tills!
