Review Vapor Cafe - Durban

Christopher Aurel
What a wonderful venue and such nice and friendly staff. I delivered a cake there for a function and everyone I spoke to about the place raved about the food and service. They also don't add a venue charge for function which is nice. The menu looks really good and varied. Thinking of having my birthday there in November. I'm confident that I can recommend this place for a function or just a casual meal.

I think an experience is what you make of it. They were full upstairs, so we were seated downstairs which was fine ( on the night). It was quite and the guy in charge downstairs was very helpful. Food was good ( but lacked some sauciness personally). I think I will go back. Just the area is a bit dodgy so be careful when walking back to your car etc.

The food is always well prepared. There's a wide variety of items to choose from on the menu. The eating rooms are cosy and I like that they are split in many sections which gives you more privacy. GODFATHER PRAWNS 🤤 delicious. Must try! Service is decent but can be a bit more snappy and sharper. Highly recommend you try this establishment

Our table was booked 2 weeks in advance and table laid to accommodate our group. Our waiter was friendly and provided us with great service. The food was on point, especially the most succulent prawns. Overall we had a lovely evening and would like to thank Vapor Café for making it so.

Had a great time. Very nice selection of drinks and interesting mocktails, decadent milkshakes and meals. Awesome pizza, seafood and sushi. The godfather prawns are incredible, among the best I've ever had, anywhere. Great decor and staff service. Parking is in the road which is not great which is the only downside. But well worth the visit and experience.

Service was outstanding food was good. I could have done with some salt on the table but everything was nice and it was a good corner spot. I also could do with a hotter sauce. Thanks guys a lovely experience will definitely come back .

This is one of the best restuarants for delicious prawns. The prawns are humongous! Soft... Juicy and oozing flavour. I enjoyed absolutely every bite. The portion size is also very generous. I was completely in love with the chocolate milkshake, for once a chocolate milkshake that had loads of chocolate! The restaurant was clean and spotless, service was excellent. Definitely recommend this awesome restaurant for a fabulous meal. There are plenty of food options for Eat eaters.

Vapour cafe was visited yesterday after reading numerous positive reviews. All I can say is that the establishment deserves every accolade heaped upon it. The food, atmosphere and service was superb. Add in a big dollop of friendliness and courtesy to be the cherry on the top. Will be returning soon.

Awesome atmosphere friendly staff. Had a kiwi mocktail was divine and my steak was absolutely perfecto. 5 star

If I could give a 0 rating I would. Worst pipe ever! Was given an ultimatum by the dick of an owner who basically said “if you don’t pay for it the waiter has to” what the fuck?

Food was really good, but the service was pathetic, had to keep looking for waitress to order, had to walk to her, as she was talking, she to colleagues, never brought cutlery, etc

We made a reservation for Sunday evening and they were very accommodating when we brought one extra person. Although I would advise notifying them before, if the number of people change, as they set the tables accordingly. And to avoid having to wait for a table. We ordered the family platter "The Gambino". Slightly overpriced in my opinion but absolutely delicious. The platter should cater for about 5 hungry people. Everything was cooked to perfection and we left feeling really full and really happy. Great service as well.

The hype for this place has been overwhelming. On our holiday to South Africa, we decided to try out their famous prawns. We ordered the Salvatore Toto with half peri-peri and chips and half lemon butter and rice. Unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. Fresh prawns when cooked, easily peel off their shells and have a crunch when eaten. These did not. They were stuck to their shells and had no crunch. The sauces and sides were decent, but the prawns, not. I give 3/5 for drinks, service and sides. We ordered a Mojito and a Salted Caramel milkshake. They were tasty and helped in keeping us there. We decided not to complain and finished what we could, and left. The waitress was really friendly, so we left her a tip. I doubt we'll be eating here again. A restaurant can have the most amazing decor and ambience, but it means nothing if the food is bad. When you pay R600 for prawns, you expect fresh produce and quality food. For us, Vapor Cafe did not deliver on this.

From the outside the venue doesn’t display the true beauty of the place. Multiple themes rooms that gives a great ambience. We ordered The Godfather prawns and the chicken curry bunnies. The prawns were excellent and would definitely recommend. The chicken curry was a bit on the mild side. Overall great venue and food.

Average food, high pricing. And really, soggy chips is a cardinal sin for anyone claiming to cook for a living. But its open late, so Ill probably be eating there again.

Kingklip was small bits of fish drenched in peri peri, fish itself didn’t taste fresh. King prawns also drenched in tons of peri peri sauce. Chips were not fresh cut, just the ordinary frozen type like from any common fast food outlet. Service was okay. No alcohol served and were not allowed to bring our own in, so that was terrible. Garlic bread was good.

We were a group of 8 and had prawns, steak and wings. Kids had the Vienna and chips. The chips were yuck. Prawns were good but has been better. Not sure if something changed in their sauce but it wasn't saucy more dry with chilli and garlic basting on prawns. The chillie sauce on wings were dynamite and the barbecue sauce was ok nothing grand I'd say. Its a busy place all year round and on a chilly night to sit outside didn feel good. Just a suggestion for the owners to make a plan with heaters or cover the outside seating which has a little shelter over it. Something removable for winter only.... food takes an hour which is okay but this is always the case. Maybe expand the kitchen? Add more chefs? Just suggesting 👍

We tried the famous and much talked about prawns. These were everything we imagined and more. The service was good. And the menu had variety. <br/>A place to return to!

Finally got to try the prawns at Vapor cafe and they didn't disappoint. The restaurant has an American diner and the menu has a variety of options for burgers and sandwiches to big family seafood platters. I ordered the prawn and chicken combo. The prawns were tasty and the sauce was great, the chicken however was dry and lacked the tikka flavoring and sauce. The service was also pretty standard, but the prawns were definitely a winner.

Food: 3<br/>Ambiance: 2<br/>Service: 3<br/><br/>Soooo this is just another version of an Indian take out joint offering fast home cooking. Nothing spectacular but hey if you hungry at 3am looking for greasy food this is your spot. The hot chocolate is really good and worth a try if you not lactose intolerant and love full cream milk.

We were seated at the flamingo <br/>Had a scarface - peri peri prawns!<br/>Such a delicious meal! <br/>Loved every bite!<br/>Totally worth it. All my friends thoroughly enjoyed their meal. <br/>The person taking the booking was a little rude, and apparently only comes in after 1pm.<br/>Overall lovely atmosphere and delicious food!

I visited here on a Wednesday night. Service was terrible, which makes me wonder how they handle prime time weekends. People at my table were getting served their food in drips and drape whilst others had been waiting over an hour for their drinks to arrive. All in all, cool set up especially with the underground levels but this place let me down with the bad service.

For light meals, the toasted sandwiches are great! Try the Don's Choice. The prawns are always a winner, not over loaded with sauce and grilled perfectly.

Superb little restaurant/diner. I went late, 9.30pm, and had the Frank Nitty with takeout banana milkshake.<br/>The portions aren't huge but they are more than adequate and indeed filling.<br/>The chicken was absolutely outstanding. Soft, juicy, tasty and lovely seasoning. The lamb chops albeit a little small were very tasty and the sheekh kebab balls were juicy and flavoursome. <br/>Slight criticism is the chilli sauce isn't the hottest but still tasty.<br/>The milkshake was again immense and the container alone is coming home back to the UK.

Everyone raves about the Vapour Cafe in Durban and I had to try it out. I admire the fact that it's 100 % Halaal and Muslim owned (However I do not mind eating at non Muslim owned restaurants) , The waiters are very friendly and accommodating. Service is a tad bit too slow & the portions sizes of the food is small and overpriced. The food is packed with delicious flavors but overall I was disappointed.

I love the concept of this place - 6 different rooms with different themes for a slightly different dining experience. I didn't explore the resturant much but the waitress explained each of the rooms etc. <br/><br/>The food was ok, and the service a bit on the slow side. I feel that there is a bit of a disconnect between the environment and the food, especially the presentation. To me, they just don't match... well at least not in the room I was sitting in.
Nikisha
Really good pizza and tikka. Service abit slow for a quiet restaurant with 3 tables occupied only. Needs more awareness to get this place on the map.

I remember coming to vapor cafe about two years ago and really enjoyed the tikka. It was a simple eatery offering a simple but flavourful menu. We walked into this renovated Vapor cafe and I was like Wow... this place is so smart. <br/><br/>We dined in the newest Flamingo room it is so stunning. At first glance, it looks like the whole area is reserved for a private function. But on closer inspection You see that the decor is permanent and you're welcomed inside by the very friendly waiters. It's a fantastic restaurant for muslim families. No music. No smoking.<br/><br/>I rated a 5.0, because everything worked at this restaurant. We had the famous godfather prawns and one of the mixed platters. When I say everything was fantastic and fresh, I am most certainly referring to everything. From the prawns to the lettuce leaves and garlic bread. The sides that often go neglected at some eateries. My fav was the seekh kebabs, baked to perfection with just the right amount of moist. The service was excellent too, and a special shout out to Pamela who knows the menu and helped us choose our meal.<br/><br/>A special mention for the absolutely clean glasses.... its 5* quality at this place

Setting: <br/>This restaurant and take-away joint is certainly unique. The ambience is great, with colored LED lights. There walls are plastered with wallpapers of NYC. <br/>Rating 7.5/10<br/><br/>Pricing: A meal for the five of us cost around R850 with tip, which is rather on the pricy side. And considering that we weren't exactly full afterwards, it's not really value for money <br/>Rating 4/10<br/><br/>Food: The prawns were delicious albeit very pricy. We also ordered a meat platter, the lamb chops and sheesh kebabs were quite delicious. The lamb chops tasted quite like braai chops actually. The chicken was tasty, but a little under cooked, and 3 of the 5 people in my family had upset stomachs afterwards which I can only believe was due to the chicken we ate. The main problem with the food was that the chips and rice portions were SEVERELY small. The prawn platter, which cost a small fortune, came with enough chips and rice for 2 small people. That being said, the chips were very nicely spiced and the rice wasn't bad either. Also, the price of the burgers seemed reasonable and the people seated on the table adjacent to ours seemed to be enjoying their burgers thoroughly. <br/>Rating: 6.5/10<br/><br/>Service: The waiter was very friendly and professional, however the restaurant seemed ill-equipped for fine dining. They did not give any spoon to dish out the rice so we had to scrape it up with a fork. There were no wet wipes after we ate(which is a necessity when you've just eaten prawns) and we had to ask the waiter for serviettes. There were no sweets with the bill(which isn't compulsory, but once again, after prawns, you need something to rid you of your fish breath). Something that I liked was that considering how many different items our order entailed, the food took no longer than 35 minutes to prepare. <br/>Rating: 4/10<br/><br/>Overall: 5.1/10

Can't really rate this place since all we had there were milkshakes and coffee. Lots of menu items were unavailable. The coffee was cold. Service wasn't great. I found it a little bizarre.

Great place for a quick bite. Uniquely themed retro 70's style. Big influence drawn from old gangster movies like the Godfather with quotes and pictures on the walls. Great food and decently priced.

A street food style venue with classic wall hangings of a previous era where cars with tails dominated the age of the wheel. This awesome place has everything from light toasted sandwiches to mixed grills or seafood. The staff and management are very friendly and helpful. My favourites are typically; The Godfather, The Town Boys Special and The Bootlegger as well as the Masala Chips. If you are feeling for some grease or fast food after all that booze this is definitely the place to be since they're open till late on Friday nights and Saturday nights. Best to order take outs though if you're boozing as this is a family orientated venue and bad behaviour will not be tolerated as there are always a lot of kids around. If you are not looking for grease, the mixed grills are a good options to consider.<br/><br/>The peri prawns are world class!!<br/><br/>If you are just looking for a chilled evening with a few teas and milkshakes try their upstairs area which allows for Shisha pipes (Hookah/Hubbly Bubbly).<br/><br/>See attached for updated Menu.

Vapor Cafe is a welcome addition to Durban's restaurant scene. Offering a hooka lounge and belly dancing and yet maintaining a family friendly atmosphere. The prawns, kebabs and god father burger a highlight. Service can be a bit slow when very busy but it isn't a major issue. Food is consistent and portions are large.

Love the choice of dining areas. Food was great! For 10 people the service was still excellent. Tried the burger, prawns, kebabs and chicken - all amazing. Loved the belly dancing lounge, desserts were yumm! Definitely worth a visit. <br/><br/>Considering that the above review was viewed close to 8000 times (posted Jan 2015) I was quite disappointed with my second visit last night only because of the arrogance<br/> of one individual who dealt with reservations. I was with my infant and thought that the booking was taken care of by family members - they arrived prior to me and were seated in the basement area which consists of the lounge, hookah and belly dancers. The person doing the reservation then said "its ok put the baby in the corner near the aircon" (seriously?) <br/>Luckily management were most accommodating for a mum with an infant and my family of 13 people were then split up - the only reason I'll return is for the food which was good as usual.

I loved loved loved the godfather burger, it has been years since ive eaten a burger this good. Recommended vapour cafe to some friends from jhb. And they loved it too. So much so that they bought padkos for their journey back to Egoli. Will definitely be going back.

The first time we went to vapor cafe was when they were still very new.menus weren't fully done etc.but the food was really good and different..<br/>The second visit was recently and everything was now fully organized with a side area called the gully and a bottom area called the underground..we were made very welcome by the host and he made a huge difference to our experience there..again the food was really good and the atmosphere very relaxed.their godfather burger IS definitely one of the best burgers in Durban no doubt!all in all a good relaxed experience and a host that made a big impact on us!will definitely be back there soon:)

This little café set in Morningside in Durban is a great place to try out some good food. The double story building is set up with a take away section downstairs offering shwarmas/pitas from R25-R30 each. They also have a frozen yoghurt section with a variety of toppings to top up on.Upstairs is a dining section where you are also offered the opportunity to smoke hooka. All food dishes are named after famous gangsters and you will not be disappointed with the selection. We tried the prawns and chicken platters which were really tasty. Serving portion were also good. Will definitely be coming back again to try something else on the menu :)Cost of dishes range between R150 -R300.
