Review Joops Place - Durban

What a lovely restaurant, with excellent service and superb food. I had the famous pepper fillet in a pan ... man oh man was this good‼️ It is cooked in the sauce in a small copper pan... and then served in the pan. Absolutely the best steak I've had in a very long time. My wife had the regular fillet, with a cheese sauce and she also complimented the steak, and mentioned that the cheese sauce was very good and creamy. Pity I don't get to Durban often enough to enjoy this in a more regular basis.

This is the home of quality steaks. Absolutely incredible chow. I honestly cannot fault the place. Many other dishes besides steak on offer and every person at the table enjoyed their meal. Not badly priced at all and service was very good. We arrived at 6pm so it wasn't the "dinner rush" so it wasn't that busy. It's a little out of the way, but soooo worth going there. It will definately become a must go to place. Parking is free, safe and very close.

Joops place is a cosy restaurant located in the same building at avondale spar , it has some tasty cocktails as well as good meal options. The staff were friendly and made us feel very comfortable. We had the pan fried steak and a rack of lamb with wine reduction, the doneness on the meat was to our order and was overall a very great experience,we will definitely we visiting there soon.

These were the best pork ribs I have ever had! Their main dishes are inexplicably appetizing. Their food is impeccable and definitely delectable. The succulent meat dishes are paired with flavourful and yummy sides of choice... I personally enjoyed their style of butternut. It was hearty and scrumptious. This is the type of place you go to EAT! And if you're a meat Lover, you will definitely enjoy the food this place. The atmosphere is chilled. The meals are of great quantities, good quality and definitely value for money. 💸

The food, like the food is just the star of this place. You feel for a proper steak with the full trimmings and joops will meet your needs. Staff and team are happy to help you through a lovely dining experience. Scene and setting is chilled and homely with a few big screens around to catch the latest sports score as you and your friends and family share a delicious meal. Will visit again and again! A must book, must try beef / meat lovers HEAVEN. Thank you for the friendly service and phenomenal cuts of meat. Not to mention the great wine selection. And I couldn't dare dessert, but they looked great... For the really hungry Joop's Legend 2.5KG T-Bone is a worthy challenge. This is going to spoil steaks from other venues, for me, for a while to come....!!

Good steaks. Check on their specials. Book for veranda seating if load shedding. If you love steak give them a try. We enjoyed our meals.

This place have been serving great steak since 1993 , it is a time capsule of old fashion quality dining that is seldom found these days - try the peppered steak . The boerie chilli bites are good as well .

We had such an amazing experience at Joop's place and would definitely recommend them to others. Their food is cooked to perfection, decently portioned and worth every single cent! The atmosphere was lovely and service was great - the waiters were awesome and the manageress constantly checked in to make sure that everything was fine. We made the mistake of ordering starters, because the main meals were so filling that we had to role out of there! I had a pepper steak, cooked to perfection, and my partner had the "Shark Tank Legend Burger" - make sure that you are super hungry when planning to order the burger. If you're looking for a good steak, Joop's is the best and definitely worth the visit.

Service was excellent while the atmosphere was somewhat spoiled by some noisy office parties. Management tried to get us a quieter table. Food was generally excellent. 600g sirloin a little more rare than the medium rare asked for, but other steaks cooked perfectly.

Joops Palace is a place to go I would recommend it anytime as I love to criticize food lol. The steak was prepared even better than Spur. Ash the waiter was very good with ther service and product knowledge. If you love steak book and go on Thursday for the 1.2kg Tomahawk steak and for an additional R50 you can share with your partner. R350 gets you a steak and a bottler of wine and a side. I'm going there again.

The 1.2 kg Tomahawk steak was slightly taken too far for my medium rare preference, otherwise was a really awesome experience. Visited again recently and was not disappointed. I had the 800g T-Bone Steak, was absolutely incredible.

I made our reservation the day before. Margriet confirmed my booking via both a phone call and WhatsApp message. My son ordered the Joop's Special Fillet and my wife and I had the date night special which consisted of a 200g Pepper sauce fillet and a slice of cheesecake, each. We were also gifted a bottle of wine which we elected to take away. All 3 of us preferred our steaks to be cooked medium. When our meals arrived, we tucked in quite heartily. To say that the meat was soft, juicy and extremely flavourful would be an understatement. The taste was divine and sublime! The desserts (cheesecake and my son ordered Malva pudding) were excellent beyond measure! My wife commented that this was one of *the* best eating out experiences she's ever had! Needless to say, we will definitely be heading back to Joop's. Thank you to Margriet and Sophie for making us feel so welcome and for attending to us throughout the night.

You want a singular, one-of-a-kind restaurant that respects MEAT and gives you the best MEAT experience... The Joop's Place is THE PLACE! You will experience meat cooked unlike anything you've tasted. Our starters was Crumbed Prawns, but it was the PEPPERED BOER BITES with a smoky tomato chilli sause that took us to taste heaven.... Now that how you do a boerwors! The mains was another experience altogether, with the Joop's Special Fillet, the Hollande Biefstuk, but our favourite, the winner that takes it all, THE CHILLI STEAK! Wow... For spice lovers, you will thoroughly love this steak. No.... They don't kill it with chilli sause. But they loving coat it with such beautiful chilli flavour, where every bite is a symphony of awesome taste! TRY IT! I promise you, IT IS AWESOME!!!

My grandpappy told my pappy back in the day; "Son, let food be your medicine and medicine your food.” With that in mind, and in need of some good medicine, I decided to book reservations at Joop's Place, Morningside. Durban may be the African Miami but to walk into this establishment was like taking a step back into a Wild West Grand Hotel Saloon. With an open flame grilled kitchen, solid wooden furniture, beautiful wooden ceiling and pottery/copper décor. The only thing missing was the swinging saloon doors. The friendly hostess greeted us at reception and showed us our white flat top with four legs. Feeling like outlaws in the 21st century, we ordered a bottle of their Zonnebloem Pinotage from the waiter doing the rounds in a packed saloon. Awaiting our posse from the north, we had a look at the salivating offerings on the menu. Before we knew it, while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, we were a 4 bandit posse and ordered our two course meal. We ordered Starters which included; Holllandse Croqeutten, Sate Chicken with spicy peanut butter sauce and Chicken & Prawn spring rolls. (mains were ordered at the same time). Being survivors of the Wild West we discussed our heroic adventures of the week. Within 30 minutes our waiter brought us our starters. Ravenous, I decided not to complain about my overcooked Sate Chicken with not-so-spicy peanut butter sauce. The spring rolls were misleading and our croqeutten were daisy. The main courses consisted of pan fried pepper steak, pepper/cheese steak, Hollandse biefstuk steak and sole grilled fish. After waiting some time, our darling Hostess thanked us for being patient with our primary dishes. The waiter doing the rounds, brought us another bottle of Zonnebloem Pinotage - making sure we don’t die of thirst ;) As hungry as a wolf, woozy from the aperitif our wonderful pan fried steaks were presented to us. As Joop's Place is a steak house, we expected the best and OMW it was the best steak I have had in a very long time. The delicious crispy black crust exterior and the perfect tender, medium done steak was just what Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman wanted me to have. The creamy pepper sauce was a supernova of flavour and the added melted cheese inside the steak was to die for. The foil covered oven-bake potato excited my little outlaw taste buds pleasantly with the sour cream sauce. My chosen posse also enjoyed their steaks. The sole grilled fish with a salad was nothing special. This was the only dish that left one of my posse disappointed. I can write down exactly what she felt, however we will keep it at that. Bit of a mix review on some of the dishes, however, we enjoyed the ambient atmosphere, friendly staff and service. We were there to have the No.1 steak in the Wild West and I can honestly say this is exactly what we got. We conveyed our gratitude towards our waiter and saddled up in my iron-horse. A journey into the dark.. Off to find the Tequila treasure and according to the Jose Cuervo legend it's hidden north of the bridge.

There are no words to describe how amazing this restaurant is. Very high standards. But from the moment you walk into Joops you are treated with the best service ever from the owners and staff. The food is out of this world. This is the only place in durban that we eat when we fly to south Africa from Uk. We look forward to our dining experience every time we are visiting. And what I love is that even our little girl is made to feel so welcome and her food is always a priority when we place our order. My family and I love this place so much. Thank you for always making us feel so welcome and for such delicious food. Best steak I've ever eaten.

I am literally one of those people who can never order food and receive my plate with everything being perfect or as promised / advertised by the restaurant....that was at least until I ordered Joop's Special! Wow! Every little detail of this restaurant is perfect! From the cleanliness of the entire restaurant, kitchen & even the toilets, to the friendly and professional "on the ball" staff, to Joop who clearly knows what he is doing and lastly the perfectly cooked meal (veggies, salad AND the best piece of fillet that I have ever tasted)! Best service! Best meal! Best atmosphere! Here's to the saying - "if you want something done, do it yourself"! Well done Joop Now all we need is Joop to move to Lichtenburg!!!!

Exceptional! Service was excellent,steak was superbly done, to the point that conversation ceases and you enjoy the perfection and taste.The cherry on the top, the beer was ice cold and Irish Coffee brilliant. If you want to spoil yourself, pay this establishment a visit, we will definitely return! �����

Awesome evening as we were celebrating a 1 month wedding anniversary with wifey. The place is well dressed and presented. The staff at the venue very welcoming and they give you your space ie. don't hog you every minute asking if the food is alright. A night well spent. Thank you for the Hospitality.

We had a very special Family dinner at Joops Place tonight. All our meals were outstanding, couldn't fault a thing. Thank you to Joel, our waiter, who tended to our every need and to the Chef... well... it was delicious! We willl be back!

Excellent food and great service, Joop! I'm SO glad one Butcher Block could not book a table for me and the other did not even bother to reply to an e-mail of mine- I discovered a jewel and we will visit again.

I've reviewed Spur and Butcher Block Florida Road recently, but after last night's dining experience (third time in a year) I came to the realization that I was a bit too kind and eager in respect of Butcher Block. Spur will always be Spur wherever you go but the likes of Butcher Block, Butcher Boys, 9th Avenue Bistro, Havana Grill, Grill Jichana and a few others place themselves in premium cost range and their food should then match. Perhaps not just the food only but the EXPERIENCE as well. Enter JOOP'S PLACE! The kitchen is visible from the restaurant via a glass sliding window. I sat there for a while watching passion in motion. The motivation promoted by Robin Sharma was staring me in the face as I watched the owner come chef Joop fry about six steaks at once in separate pans on a gas stove. That was nothing because when we got chatting (while he cooked) I found him to be friendly and accommodating (I was taking mobile phone photos, surely affecting his concentration). His business acumen shone through like a bright light as he unintentionally gave me a lecture on "Make your business special and grow it from the heart 101". After this I sat down for a really tender sirloin cooked exactly as I asked. My wife had the lamb shank with mash - the meat was falling off the bone. Joop did give me some food for thought on the rump he offered when I was blabbing on about Spur's good prices. Joop said: I will give you a rump that comes with a sauce for X Rand. Spur will give you the same rump cheaper but you will pay them extra for a sauce, this taking the Spur price level with mine. Phew! I must look into this because if it's true then I'm never going to have a steak at Spur again. The most delicious and melt in your mouth steaks. Had a lovely time on Saturday night with some special people. Everyone there is warm and welcoming. Atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. We will be back. The menu looks amazing.

I was sceptical at first after reading the reviews online. But man am I happy I went there. Service was exceptional from beginning to end. The garlic roll with cheese left much to be desired for but did that "Chilli Beefstuk make up for it?!" Can't remember if I ever had a more delicious steak than that one with that smooth mashed potato. Joop I will return. Most definitely.

Coming from. Jhb Joops has always been a go to place for me. Unfortunately last week Thursday I flew in from Joburg and especially headed for Joops for a wonderful steak. My partner had a fillet which was nice but my rump was not great and am sure the chef knew prior to serving as it had been cut jaggered as a sign of huge sinew. Seriously, you know a bad steak so don't serve something like that guys.

Had a good experience here. Cozy atmosphere, with an intimate setting. The cheese and garlic roll made for a good starter as we were both starving- food was quick as well. The real highlight was the steaks - it’s their specialty. One of the best steaks I tried in a long time. I tried the pepper steak, my husband had the plain one that was equally as good. Shared a chocolate mousse for dessert. Will definitely be revisiting this spot

Being an avid steak lover, when I heard about "the best steak in durban" I had to check out Joops Place. On arrival the setup left a lot to be desired, one small low ceiling room straight out of the 80's, complete with hanging ornaments, cheesy music and enough khaki to start a revolution.<br/>The food on the other hand was a startling revelation!<br/>My husband had the Hollandse Beefstuk which was positively the best steak i have tasted. Crispy charred on the outside with a melt in the mouth savoury inner, flambed in brandy, made up the most tantalising taste and texture sensation. My Old Man Steak was meh, just meh. Go for the food, not the atmosphere.

The menu on this Zomato site for needs to be updated for Joops place. The ave cost for 2 people would not be R300 but more close to R500. The panfried steaks have upped by about R30 ...so more in the region of R175 to R200 for a 300g steak. From the reviews I have seen I guess my expectations were really high when I ordered the pepper steak. It was a good piece of meat but too rich. Meat was floating in a pan full of buttery creamy sauce- uninteresting flavours. Also the wine list left nothing to be desired. It was a Monday night with only one waitress so our service was very slow. We ordered the hot sponge dessert and it was very dry and bland. We decided to leave before the place got too smoky. For me, nothing worth returning for.

Had Joops steak and it was absolutely terrible. The steak itself was cooked well although the sauce it was with was terrible. The sauce had grime from the pan and the whole dish tasted like eating oil. Disgusting :(

My steak was unrivaled in taste and presentation.<br/>No starters, straight to mains - we ordered Hollandse steak pan fried until crisp on the outside flambeed with brandy. Outstanding. Raw onion the only side. I know sounds bad but delicious. The other steaks were pepper cheese and fillet. <br/>Beware notice on menu " Not served medium well or well done "<br/>Absolute must to have steak when you visit.<br/>A bootle of Kevin Arnold Shiraz 2011 sealed the evening.<br/>Bravo !!

FANTASTIC!! This was the best experience ever. We got there around 19:30 and the place was so packed we could not find a seat. The owner's wife came and said we can wait by the counter overlooking the chef. We sat there, AMAZED!! You can see how he prepares the meat, whether it is on open flame or pan fried etc. He got his own specials and it is definitely worth a try! Steaks are perfectly cooked, warm atmosphere, friendly staff. HIDDEN GEM!!

"WoW" steak was top notch, The best steak ever had in my life and very affordable too.<br/><br/>I heard this steak house never changed their interior or revamped anything to attract / convince their customer which is a best example of their self confidence. <br/>

We took the folks out for some great steaks. I think the last time we were here was back in the late 90s. It was awesome to see Joop Mol manning the grill section.<br/><br/>The peppercorn crusted cheddar cheese stuffed pan fried steak was done perfectly and the nutty butter flavour shone through. The sides of herbed green beans, butter fried button mushrooms and fried onion rings hit the Banting spot perfectly.<br/><br/>Definitely a restaurant we shall return to for the legendary steaks cooked by the former butcher turned Masterchef.

This used to be our favorite steak place when we lived in Durban. Very glad to say that's still the case. The pan fried steaks are the best prepared steak we have eaten. So much better than the usual pepper rub or BBQ found every where else. They can however do with better vegetable sides. The mushrooms are too salty and don't bother with the onions, an absolute waste of time. Other dishes we had were also great, namely lamb shank, oxtail, mussel starter, Sate, prawn cocktail and the snails. The creme brûlée was to die for, unfortunately the chocolate mousse was revolting. Though the owner was nice enough to acknowledge this and not charge us for it. Service was also really great. NB! If I had to rate the restaurant on the pan fried steak only it would definitely get a 5. However I am giving it a 3,5 because the restaurant is badly in need of redecorating. The wine list is too sad to mention. No cocktails 😢. Some may say that the quaintness of the restaurant is part of the charm, I disagree. As much as I would like to see these changes I would absolutely return for the pan fried steak even if non of these changes take place.

Really good steak. I enjoyed my regular fillet steak. Although it was just a little salty for me, but then again I dnt eat that much salt. I really loved the fact that the steak was not marinated in that bbq sauce everybody else uses. Really loved the tate if the food.

Decor leaves much to be admired .. But that's not what I came for. The steaks are out of this world, done to perfection and never disappoint. If you Banting the side veg is as yummy as the baked tats, chips, mash or rice options. The mushrooms are a must! A little 2013 Lavenir Merlot, medium rare Rochefort Fillet and I am a VERY happy lady 😋

This, hands down, has to be the best steak restaurant in KZN! Owned and run by a husband and wife team for many years this restaurant has earned itself a strong reputation amongst the locals and rightly so. Prices are a bit on the expensive side, but the food is definitely worth paying the extra bit!<br/><br/>If you're a steak lover, this is a restaurant that you simply can't pass up!

A place that was recommended by friends turned really better than my expectations . We ordered the Joops Special- chilly, my husband ordered the pineapple. The meat was succulent and juicy and the chilli was just right. The pineapple that was enmeshed in the meat was gave it a unique taste , not giving the feel of a few pieces of pineapple stuffed in meat. I haven't been to a better steak house in Durban. I have been here a few times and it's always constant and steaks are prepared to your liking but the waitrons also recommend how a specific steak should be done. I have mine medium. I usual order is the pan fried fillet with button mushrooms. It's is absolutely divine. Atmosphere is cosy and intimate.

I have had my fair share of good steaks. ...but Joops has surpassed them by far! The service was great, my steak done to perfection and for being a "steakhouse", the dessert menu definitely outdid this quaint lil restuarant. My taste buds were more than satisfied.

Now here is one of the few great steak restaurants here in durban. <br/>The steaks are undoubtedly their specialty here. <br/>I like that you can watch your steak being prepared and cooked by the chef while you wait for your food.<br/>Calamari starter was a little over cooked and chewy but still good. <br/>A definite must try is the fillet steak prepared in a peppercorn sauce but the chicken schnitzel was great too. <br/>A word of warning, do not try to order your steaks well done here, not only would you be ruining a perfect steak but the chef gets a bit cranky if you do. <br/>Overall a great restaurant, fantastic food and good service.

We have been here a few times. The owner is quite friendly and tries to make her rounds and greet everyone.<br/><br/>I really like the menu here. I feel like I have so many choices. They are best known for their steaks and they are very good.<br/><br/>I have tried the mussels which I found a bit tough and was a bit disappointed. The snails are very good! So delicious! The steaks are very tender and the sauces that accompany them are great. The desserts are also good with a couple of options. <br/><br/>My biggest "fault" with this place is that it gets very smoky as it's an open kitchen. So by the time you leave you smell like smoke.
