Review The Burner - Cape Town Central

The Food is absolutely delicious. If you looking for an authentic Durban Bunny Chow or Curry then The Burner is you stop. I've had the Lamb Curry Bunny Chow there a few times and always a great experience.
Food Lover
Bunny chow best in the country. According to the kids its not a bunny chow, its volcano bread😂 Good people of South Africa and beyond, the Bunny Chow from The Burner in Bellville South is a must try, i cant stress enough how tasty and nice it is. I tried a bunny in Durban, as this is the origin of the Bunny Chow, but at the Burner eish the best. Please if u or any other person this is a must try

Authentic Durban Cuisine. Its based in a pub like bar. Dimly lit with Indian decor. I ordered take out. The curries are usually very nice but always very oily. I highly recommend their soji. Its disappointing they only have their butternut curry during the fast
Avinash Singh
The best indian food in South Africa and I am from Durban! Nothing is more authentic indian food than this. Proper indian curries and dishes. Affordable and no compromise on quality. Big portions too. Make sure you get a Soji or Vermicilli take away! My advice... Mutton Bunny Chow. Butter chicken not so good. The rest brilliant.
Thandi Ntuli
We enjoyed their samosas and lamb bunny chow! Great presentation and taste.

This is the best Indian restaurant that we have eaten at in Cape Town so far. It was recommended on the popular group Appetite on Facebook and it did not disappoint. The owner is kind and friendly. The food is filled with flavour (Durban Style) The waiters are fairly friendly and the atmosphere is casual. Its hard to get real Durban Style food in Cape Town but THE BURNER does provide just that. The Wedding style soji is a must. My family and I will return without a doubt.

Serve a Bunny Chow!!! I've never had a bunny chow, and this place definitely set the mood for more. It was tasty, well presented and had the Durban flavour - that's from a friend 😅. Worth a checkout. Big ups guys 💯

Best Lamb bunny! A really authentic durban curry. And the Soji is the best! My go to order when I miss home as a student in cpt.

Update : 2 years have past, been ordering from here atleast once a month and still has fantastic food. From the packaging to the quality of the food itself. From the outside , the place looks like somewhere you go to die : ) , but inside its got this classic hotel dinner/ bar vibe. Service was great, friendly staff . Will be back !

This establishment serves a very nice curry. It is not too strong and spicy just very nice. One of the friends had a bunny chow whereas the other and I had a lovely lamb curry. The service is good though not spectacular and you are able to order wine, spirits and beer. Do yourself a favour and try them out. Please like review if you found it helpful.

The best food and service. Whatever Indian food you wished for, you can get it at this restaurant. Great ambience and Sunday lunch buffet was a special treat for our family of 6 adults. The restaurant was busy but this did not affect service. Loved the creative table cloth. Had menu items written on it in an artistic, colorful way. I highly recommend if you are looking for authentic Durban Indian food.

well easy to find, decor is of homely nature with nothing over the top. friendly staff ,simple stocked bar but the focus is definitly the food. bunny chow was out of this world , authentic indian style curry with varouis choices of meat or vegetarian option. will be back to try the others.. but the chicken and mutton gets my thumbs up

Very happy with the quality of the food and rather impressed with the value for money for both food and beverages. The Christmas lunch was excellent value for money. There was a great variety of dishes to choose from and we discovered an excellent Indian dessert "Soji" on the day. I have never been disappointed at any of my visits and have started to take friends and clients to the venue. I highly recommend the restuarant.
Savitri Govender
The best curries in Cape town only the second place I found real Durban style curries the taste and the look .My second visit ..me being in the food business ..I will recommend people to go there. And if anyone looking for curries in the southern hemisphere. Try Savitris Indian Cruizine.

Every weekend I take my mom out for lunch, this weekend we decided to try the burner as it came highly recommended. Upon entry we were greeted by a woman who looked like she had lost the will to live, but that's a minor issue. The main issue is as follows, I absolutely love a good chicken bunny chow, I try them all over the city whenever I see it on a menu, so when I saw it on the menu of this highly recommended place I knew from the start what I was going to order. Waited 10 minutes for our food, no problem with that. Received our food and it seemed like a generous portion, we then drove home excited to dig in to the food from which made my whole car smell like amazing curry. We arrived at home and my entire day was ruined... my chicken bunny chow was not what I expected it to be, instead it was a chicken BONE bunny chow. I removed 6 big chicken bones which contained LITERALLY NO CHICKEN. There is more chicken on a single KFC thigh than there was in my ENTIRE bunny chow... What a waste of money and a complete rip off... furthermore. With every single bite I had to remove atleast 2 very small bones from my mouth, nothing worse than not being able to chew your food and swallow, they should have a sign saying "approach with caution, contains 500 small bones". needless to say I will never return to this establishment nor will I ever recommend it, unfortunately first impressions last.

On Saturday 9 July 2016 at about 19h00 I took some of my friends for a nice curry meal. We ordered mutton salomies. We had a beer and the food was served with big disappointment. It was clear that the salomies was not made at your Restaurant but taste and looked like it was prepared/bought from a factory. The salomies were cold and hard with a little bit of curry inside. I did ask to speak to the chef or management, but nobody was available. As I previously had a bunny chow at your place which taste good, I decided to order a bunny chow but was disappointed as it seems if the meat was burned. Previously the food was of excellent quality and I recommended your restaurant to a lot of people. Lately clearly something is wrong with the preparation of the food.
Glen Reagan Bentley
My wife and I had a fantastic time last night. The food was delicious! The waiter advised us to go for the Mutton Curry. Only down side is that it comes with only one roti.
Koo Ramesh
The best place for a curry.. Better than any place in cape Town. The service was excellent
Astrid Jackson
I've eaten from them twice now and I absolutely love it. It is the best indian food in the western cape.. My only wish is that there was a milder option for those who don't like very hot foods. I think that will broaden your clientele. Thanks a lot for the lovely food...
Gail Europa
It was Absolutely amazing the curry was Devine will definitely be back for Sunday lunch and would recommend you to all of my family and friends .

I always go to Goundens and Recwntly Hollywood Bet in Durban if I want a good mutton bunny. I would rate The Burner on par or better than those toe. Best thing is, it is in Cape Town. Nice portions, well presented and nicely priced with the authentic Durban Mutton bunny taste!! Happy customer

Bunny chow was the best. Definately go back there to order again.

Awesome food, great service, friendly staff & fantastic atmosphere for watching sport/going out for dinner/ or even just relaxing & taking the day off. I have not tasted better Indian cuisine elsewhere, definitely recommended!
Yossabel Chetty
Love this place! Authentic Durban Curry away from home :)
Samantha Steenberg
Only 1 thing u guys could maybe add to the buffet.... DESSERTS...... other than that it was good...
Heather Watson
Excellent food at affordable prices. Will recommend to anyone.
Paulin Naidoo
Good food for a damn good price. Will definitely be back.

I would recommend the menu of the burner anytime. The food is divine, and though all the staff not always trained as we clients would like it to be we ought to be a bit more patient and tolerant. Yes sure we pay, but we are also humans who share a simple thing in common called "understanding". GOOD FOOD TAKES TIME, and so does training I to which a lot of money is pumped. Five stars for The Burner, Bellville deserves a top class restaurant since we no longer have Quick Foods.
Kardess Kock
I love the curry it is amazing & seriously Durban style cuisine. The roti & curry just great. Still need to try the B Chow soon!
Yugz Baliram

In the North we have a shortage of good Curry, the Burner definitely hits the spot !!!!!! You can sit down or take away !!!

The service and food was aweful. I will never return there was told to wait for our food which is understandable waited for 20 minutes to be told the bunny chows were out of order. Then waited another 15 minutes for toasted sandwiches which was soaked in oil was so bad. We then asked for a refund for the bunnies that where out off order to receive R32.00 short we then called the restaurant and no one picked up the phone. Sorry to say it was my first visit there and it is definitely my last visit.

Always a great meal rendered by The Burner! Now resorted to buying their curries for the freezer so that I can get a fix whenever needed
Ghost
The mutton bunny chows are amazing. The staff here is always friendly and they are very efficient. Went there last week and will be going again tonight. Their food is always fresh.
Nathan Alard
Worst ownership experience, no accountability, disregard for customers, outmost disrespect for others as a business and establishment!
I'll never purchase here, and deter anyone from using there service or consuming there products.
Saleena Daniels
Best Durban curry in Cape Town. We've tried the other 'best' places and they don't match up to the Burner. They have an awesome Saturday special every Saturday, today there was Cornish chicken and gadra beans... Happy eating!
Angus Fortein
I ordered a takeaway mutton breyani which was very tasty with it's lovely eastern spices. A really good meal which was value for money. However the staff could at least be more friendly and welcoming. It was as if they were doing me a favour. Being a Monday evening they were probably annoyed after a tiring month end!!! I would rate them 5 if they could get rid of that dour look.
Zee
I had tripe curry with rice and boyfriend had butter chicken, mine was way too strong and lacked taste and my boyfriends dish was plain tasteless. Only plus was the tripe was cooked nice and soft.
Eben Daniels
We kept it local this evening.

I've had Burner as a takeaway before, but tonight was the first time that I had a sit down meal. the staff were friendly.

I ordered a boneless mutton bunny. it was spicy, the meat was soft and the bread was fresh.

I'll definitely be back

This is a delayed post - we had supper here last Friday. Let's start with the not so good things:
1. The location: it's in a dodgy looking, industrial area. Parking is available with a security guard.
2. The atmosphere: think a late night bar type. Quite dark inside and loud TV screens. Despite this, we decided to sit down (a mistake that won't be repeated). So these two reasons is why it gets a 4/5.
The food itself was definitely a 5 for me. So close to Durban style food. I started with mince samoosas while waiting for the rest of our family. A little pricey (R19 for 3 medium sized ones) but very yummy. Had enough filling and the pastry was flaky. For the mains, we each ordered separately but shared - there was mutton bunny, mutton breyani, mutton curry, mince kebabs and sugar beans bunny. Unfortunately, you cannot choose the spicy level of your curry. My brother (who normally eats really hot food) struggled a bit with the hotness of his bunny but still declared it the best mutton bunny he's had. The breyani and mutton curry were similarly appraised. My mince kebabs were more moderate than hot (how I prefer it) and came with 5 kebabs and one roti. Was very delicious. I finished all 5 kebabs in record time. The sugar beans bunny was also moderately spicy and came with a huge potato and lots of gravy.
We had soji to end with - buttery and soft, reminded me of Indian weddings.
Service was good and attentive.
If you're craving Durban style food, this is the place to go but get a takeaway and enjoy at home 😊

Whilst heading to Food Inn for supper I decided to give The Burner a try instead. I ordered 2 lamb rotis/salomis and I also ordered a lamb breyani.

All 3 dishes tasted really good. It was quite spicy, a bit too spicy for my wife and daughter but just the right amount for me. I expected the breyani portion to be slightly bigger (compares to Food Inn and Eastern Bazaar) but what they lack in portion size they make up in quality.

I really enjoyed the roti... It was delicious and I like that they use deboned lamb. I also really liked the Dahl they gave... Could eat it as a meal on is own. I will definitely return and I want to try the bunny chow.

First time my colleagues and I ordered from The Burner and it was worth every cent. The Bunny Chow was out of this world.Definitely going back and recommending it to all.
Lauren Rabie
Would not recommend this place at all.

Food was below average, not tasty. Ordered the butter chicken and found some blue plastic piece inside of it, didn't continue eating, asked for the bill and paid. I did advise the waiter but he didn't seem to care.

Will definitely not be going back
Francois Roos
This is truly a hidden GEM! The Bunny chows are amazing. Very good consistency - I have never had a bad meal. The portion sizes are VERY generous for a reasonable price! The only downside would be the location.
Thecapegatsby
Ordered mutton bunny chow thinking great specialist venue I'd get some "authentic" spice up flavour bomb.
Nope just basic curry in all spice, too salty and unfortunately the bread was stale too. This was a big let down. 50% of the meal is bread atleast make sure that made daily! Nice paper table cloths though gave us something to read instead of waiting the abnormally long time for ready made meals. step yo game up guys
Dense Mothercracker
Was told to go chow the beans bunny there. Ekse, I aksed for extra chillie and that thing was piping hot! Won't vy anywhere else next time I pull into the Mother's City. Thanks owes, the service was marvellous! You're the real OGs. Regards, your customer that flew in from Durban the other week.
Anton Pillay
I've been there several times, and have convinced employees from my work to join me on occasion; food is always good and at a fraction of the price of other "Indian restaurants" (which normally have smaller portions of food that doesn't taste great anyway). Definitely recommended.
Anandmrk
I was referred to this place and told that they have awesome Briyanis and bunny chows. We went here with some of our colleagues and we ordered for some samosas veg, chicken and fish initially. Fish was nice. Then came in the Briyanis which we asked for. Except for the lamb Briyani which was average there was nothing else worth mentioning. Then came the bunny chows. Since we didn't have a bunny chow before, we noticed the mistake we made of ordering the Briyanis and samosas unnecessarily. Though the bunny chows came with the awesome chicken gravy, Only 2 of the guys were able to crush the bunnies. I just made a takeaway of whatever was left on my plate.

On an overall scale the Briyanis were a total let down. They should serve many starters. Should improve on their quality when they charge a bit more than an average Indian restaurant. I don't know if I will be back.
Kevin Brown
The food is pretty decent, in fact it's pretty good. The location and decor let the venue down but also makes it a diamond in the rough. I will certainly be returning and it's good value for money.
Jody Harris
Pretty decent chow. Only been once but would return. Don't let the decor and building put you off. The service is good and so are the prices.

OK OK Burner... Burner oh Burner. When you have a craving for let's say briyani and a "lekker" mutton curry I drive from southern suburbs to Burner... Toe-tally worth it believe me curries are legit and the bunny chows ... How do we say it in the Cape... Jho! They are the real deal keep it up.

Bellville South's hidden gem! Went for Sunday buffet lunch with friends, and the food was mostly excellent! The mac and cheese was dry, tho. And the 'roast' (chicken and meat) was not great. But their curries (fish, lamb and chicken) was amazing, and their breyani was equally great! Service was very good, as well. Friendly staff. Definitely worth the effort
Vitesh Rampaul
The burner is a life saver when it comes to a great authentic Indian curry. A point of note . . . Its not called the burner for nothing lol. Friendly staff, good ambience and tasty food!
Sherika Nair
Best curries in Cape Town ! The bunnychows are amazing and all the portions are extremely generous. The service is welcoming and the vibe is great, especially on Fridays during lunch!!

Being a Durbanite living in Cape Town I struggled to find good Durban curries...that is until I visited The Burner. The location is not the best and I have to admit I second guessed making a booking here. When you walk its a nice, neat and quaint restaurant setting that is spotless. Absolutely neat and clean.

The Lamb Bunny Chow has to be my favorite meal on the menu, the Lamb Biryani comes in second for me. Soji is the best I have had, once that you would find a traditional Indian wedding.

The staff is very accommodating and friendly
Chanel Pillay
Craving authentic Durban style curries in Cape Town, The Burner is definitely the right option.

I went there on Sunday for the buffet with a couple of friends, all of which are from Durban. Everyone of us loved the food. I tried the chicken curry then the lamb curry with rice and carrot salad. For dessert I had the soji which was perfect.

The buffet is R99 per person and you can eat as much as you can. I thought this is great value for money as the buffet includes lamb, chicken and fish curry, variety of salads, lamb and vegetable breyani as well as roast chicken and pasta and a few other options.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The only downfall to The Burner is its location, as it's not in an ideal location.
Prashni Maharaj
I am a Durbanite..and this is the only resturant I've come across in the past 5 years of being in CT...that you can find a "proper" Durban Mutton Curry Bunny Chow..
Now this is a place if you are wanting to eat some strong Indian food. Clean, neat and tidy place. Sit down or take away this is the place. Bought a mutton salomie and oh my word was it hot. My lips had a nice buzz while eating it. Now this is money well spent. Will definitely be going to buy another.

So on my second time going to the burner i ordered the usual quarter mutton bunny with chicken spring rolls, and man i am in impressed by the high standards and variety of foods at the burner.I will be back again definitely a hidden gem. This is honestly what the northen suburbs has been lacking.
Amy Laura Cloete
Best food and a surprising gem where you would never expect! Wish this place was in CBD best taste and value for money. Will be back again :)
