Review Hesheng Chinese Restaurant - Cape Town Central

Sakamoto
It's a good idea to have hot tea and dimsum in winter. (Be careful the food is hot) you can eat these for a break. Also, this restaurant has a lot of Chinese food. The taste isn't too strong that everyone can eat easily.

Nice fried steam bun 生煎包. Beef noodle soup is decent, like the noodle texture. Spicy beef is good too.

Hidden Gem! Amazing Dim Sum and my absolute favorite has to be the Xiao Long Bao, you won't be disappointed! Reasonable prices and the fried dumplings are also delicious!

Small family restaurant. No frills or fancy decor and service from the owner can come across as, being rude but this is not intentional. We wanted soup noodles. The won ton soup noodles were pretty good. The roll beef cakes are the best - it could do with a bit more beef. Update: November 2022 - great food. We had the Sui long bao, won ton noodle soup and cold dishes - so delicious - highly recommended.

This is an absolute hidden gem. An Authentic with no frills and fancy. This was our second time and this time was better as the restaurant has been taken over by two young couples who previously worked here. Now there is friendlier service and still great food. Will definitely go back and will post pictures as well. Well done and keep it up

Love the home cook setting of this restaurant, and the amazing quality of their food. Mapo tofu is top notch. Sweet and sour chicken is so much better than most of them I have had in the US. Highly recommended.

Some of the negative reviews are hilarious. Best authentic Chinese food that rivals my mom’s cooking. We demolished both orders of the xiao long bao and beef dumplings. Who cares about the decor? I find it, along with the woman/owner who served us, charming. Also food came out FAST. We were in and out in an hour. Coming back later this week, don’t let the secret get out to people who won’t appreciate it.

Tried it out with some friends over the Easter weekend. Xiao long bau was fantastic and juicy, the way it should be! Really enjoyed that. Soup noodle was bouncy with decent flavourings. Well made and quickly prepared and served. What more can you ask for.

Best xiaolongbao of Cape Town, hands down. The other dimsum are delicious as well. I highly recommend this gem if you want traditional Chinese food. The staff is very friendly as well!

Very authentic Chinese food that they serve here. They have many traditional dishes like small eats, soup noodles and dumplings. They also have many local dishes to choose from. The prices are very reasonable and affordable. As you know many Chinese restaurants don't have the finest in decors or services like your fine-dining restaurants. As long as the orders are right, the food tasted good and the place is clean... then you are good to go and eat there.

Can't get enough of the amazing food. Better than any Chinese food I have every had. Do yourself a favour and order the Xiao Long Bao and Won Tom noodle soup

Excellent Dim Sum. Some of the best I havr ever had. Would definitely recommend the soup dumplings as well as the pot stickers. We ordered a few options and shared between 6 of us and there was not a single dish I wouldn't order again.

Such an unassuming hidden gem. The food was incredible. Packed with flavour and please add the chilli oil to whatever you're eating. It's not very spicy but it will elevate your meal like nothing else.

We absolutely loved this restaurant! The food was incredible, and the staff are fantastic. We went with our kids and we all experienced the most delicious dishes. They use fresh ingredients that are extremely tasty. Highly recommend.

Beautifully balanced flavours. Authentic Chinese dining. I'd suggest coming during off-peak hours, and being respectful of how the restaurant operates. We had the cucumber salad, the xiao long bao, and the beef flank noodle soup — I recommend you do the same.

A no frills authentic Chinese restaurant. A constant stream of regular Chinese diners who all seem to recognize and greet each other. Simple, honest food. Dim sum’s seem to be popular and you’ll often seen them being folded fresh in the restaurant. Noodles in soup also house made. Xiao Long Bao, Fried Dumplings, Spring Onion Pancake and Beef Flank Soup Noodles all recommended. Cash only. Good value.

Super authentic dim sum and dumplings, one of the best in Cape Town. Totally worth the bizarre service (which adds to the experience, really). With the dim sum, everything steamed and fried is brilliant. The leek and spring onion pancakes are a fave. Soup dumplings are a reason to make the trip on their own. Mapo tofu is fantastic. Be brave and focus on the dumplings!

Listen. I am terrified of this lady but honestly I’d risk being shouted at for the dim sum alone. Nothing off the dim sum menu will disappoint you! I also love the cucumber salad which makes for a nice acidic pairing with all the deep-fried or steamed carbs. The prices have gone up quite a bit, though, which is unfortunate. I'm not convinced that the food is quite worth it at this new price point.

Place was awesome, went Sunday and got seated quickly. The food arrived and it was yummy to say the least. The service was amazing as well. This is officially my new go to place. The atmosphere is relaxed and the hostess although busy tries her best to see to your needs as quick as she can. Had to thank her afterwards for the service and the amazing food.

After reading the reviews for this restaurant I think that the food served in the restaurant must be very different to the take away. I did see the owner making dumplings, so perhaps the dumplings are a better bet than the other meals. We got a takeaway black bean chicken, and sweet and sour chicken. The sweet and sour chicken had little balls that were mostly just soggy pastry with almost no chicken inside. The black bean meal had this very strange taste to it that I couldn’t actually stomach, although it at least had proper chicken strips rather than these mushy deep fried, stringy thing. I would certainly never try the takeaway again and I’d be unlikely to go back for the sit in meals after how unappetising I found this food.

The woman that works there and runs the place is completely unprofessional! She treats her customers like dirt! The experience every time has been a disaster & it’s actually not worth the good food. I’d rather take my business else-where to avoid a negative experience.

Their food is good but their service SUCKS they are extremely rude with no zero people skills. Went there to order a takeaway and was “told” (shouted at) very rudely to come back in 15 minutes. Other time I placed an order over the phone and asked when I can collect, they said 30 mins I get there and they make me wait an hour. Sucks that there’s not much to choose from in terms of authentic Chinese restaurants, and I think they know it - hence the attitude from them.

The 2 of us arrived at 7pm on Saturday. We had no reservation and had to wait for about 15 min. Owner's interaction with customers is no nonsense and no chit chat. Take it or leave it. Luckily my son eats here a lot and knows the setup. Food was great. Had the pork & shrimp dumplings, rolled beef cake, cucumber salad. Also sweet & sour pork with rice. Every bite was delicious. Dont expect the normal restaurant set up. More like eating at a friends house with basic surroundings and a stern but wonderful cook
Candice
We arrived after 8pm on a Saturday night. The owner told us we were only allowed to order starters such as xiao long bao, but we would have to eat quickly. The food arrived quickly, we ate hastily, paid and left.

We went and they didn't have a table for 4 (there was one for 6, however they didn't want to give it up. Conveniently wasn't used the entire time) so we agreed to order take away

We were STANDING outside the restaurant because they said we couldn't be inside for 50 MINUTES. It took them FIFTY minutes to make 3 dishes????

There were other tables that came after us and were seated. THEY SERVED THEIR FOOD FIRST!! even though they can see us standing outside.

We wouldn't expect to be served first because we were standing, we would however, expect to be served in order of who arrived when/in sequence of who ordered

At the end of it all, we had to get a refund as we were absolutely starving and there was no communication whatsoever.

The lady actually argued that 50 mins and counting was a reasonable time to be waiting without any notice.

They hadn't even started cooking our meals

Came here for dinner on a recommendation from a friend. It took me right back to Hong Kong!

Very authentic, from the food to the decor and atmosphere, everything about this place is great.

We ordered the leek pancake, pork and prawn steamed dim sum and the chicken noodles. Everything was really tasty and freshly made. The sauces on the table completed the dim sum for me, as it’s exactly what you get in China.

I would definitely recommend for authentic Chinese food and it’s great value for money!

Since Sunny has joined the team, this restaurant has just been going from strength to strength! Their food is so delicious, and seemingly authentic. The super well priced dim sum and leek cake is especially delicious - so is the cold pig ear salad (hear me out) which is not to be missed. That being said, apparently it's hard to source, so it may be dropped from the menu soon - saddies! I also really like the gongbo beef - have it with a side of steamed rice and Chinese veg plate. Lately, there has always been a queue, so I would recommend that you give them a call to book. It's certainly not a fancy place, but the food speaks volumes!

The food made up for what lacked in ambience at this restaurant. Good quality, great tasting food. Their red bean cake was particularly memorable and I highly recommend it. Their prices are bit on the higher side but it's not bad for more authentic Chinese cuisine. You won't be finding your regular commercial Chinese takeaway dishes here. The restaurant itself is a bit small and gets cramped as the tables are positioned close to one another. It can get loud as well. But go for the food. It's worth it.

Visited He Sheng and ordered takeaways. The order was prepared extremely quickly. Everything is super fresh and authentic ! Their prices are really good too.

We had the spring onion pancake and the leek pancake ( which has a filling). Both are very tasty.

The pork and prawn dumplings are also really good. The xiao long bao was the best! The owner did recommend them as they are the best seller. Each order includes a portion size of 12 which is great value for money. Rather than other restaurants who charge R45 for 4.

We also order the oyster sauce beef with rice. Full of flavor, vegetables and meat. All very freshly made.

Will definitely be back for dim sums and will order more Chinese food next time !
Michelle
Wow - such yummy food!! Best Chinese food in Cape Town!! We shared the fried dumplings (pork and beef), soup dumplings, spring onion pancakes, beef noodle soup, won ton soup, egg plant dish, sweet and sour pork, beef rib and egg fried rice - everything was super delicious!! Can’t wait to go back again!!

This is such a hidden gem! Their dumplings are definitely the best in Cape Town. It is owner run & managed the owner is super friendly! Be sure to try the spring onion pancakes too! Will be back to try the rest of the menu.
Where-oh-where
Great value for money dim sum. And handmade at the restaurant. We only had dumplings and sides, but will definitely be back to try more of the menu. The condiments on the table, Chinese beer and pop-up serviettes take me back to Taiwan.
Michelle
This is one of my best places! The Chinese beer is so delicious, I love the plastic tissues on the table makes me so happy like I was on the streets in Asia again. The dumplings are absolutely incredible I could eat so many baskets of them! The cucumber salad I have to have every time! And the spring onion pancakes are just the best! The young lady who waitresses every time I go is so lovely! Every time I take some one there they think I’m crazy until the taste the food! If you like dumplings you have to go, but you will be addicted

We had been craving proper Chinese food for a while as it's rather hard to find authentic Chinese food in Cape Town. Some friends recommended this place and I am truly thankful for it! Their food is incredibly tasty and isn't badly priced. I have been there twice in the past week and it has been nothing short of amazing both times. The owners are really friendly and the food, well, it's to die for. Needless to say this is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant in Cape Town. I would definitely recommend having their dumplings!

Someone on Twitter had mentioned this is THE place to go to for affordable dim sum, so I made a turn at Hesheng a while back and man, did they deliver! The owner is a bit blunt and isn't interested in patrons asking for recommendations, so I suggest trying the stuffed pork mince bun and fried dumplings to start. At R60 for 12 pieces, you can't beat this, trust me. South China is on par for me, but this is way better value for money.

Like most Asian restaurants, this one lacks a bit of atmosphere, so I'd suggest getting food to go.

Best dumplings I've had, at an extremely decent price that doesn't even compare to other places serving dumplings. At He Sheng you get ten to twelve for what you usually pay for two or three. Portions are bigger than you expect so bring friends to share with. Definitely try the soup dumplings, they're by far my favourite. Beef flank noodle soup was amazing too!

This little gem serves dim sum to die for. We are never disappointed. Decor very simple, setting very simple but the friendly family owned establishment serves dish after dish of pure pleasure.
The cater for vegetarians. And at the end of the night after a feast, their bill does not break the bank.

There are many authentic Asian restaurants along Sea Point Main and while I count on Andy's for my easy access sushi fix, He Sheng has captured my heart with its Chinese fare.

My close friend has lived in Beijing and we can't keep away from this place. Not only are they reasonably priced, the dim sum is out of this world and ideal for sharing.

I recommend:

- Pork and prawn dumplings served piping hot (serves 2)
- Leek pancakes
- Egg rolls
- Spring onion pancakes

For mains (if you aren't too stuffed)

- I recommend the hot and sour potato slices and hot chilli chicken with rice.

Can't wait to try their sweet n sour pork - saw it at another table and it looked terrific. Service is great considering the floor is run by one very efficient Chinese woman. Also, wine list is minimal but you can bring your own. It also gets quite busy, so come early!

Highly authentic, delicious Chinese food.

It's really difficult to find anyone in Cape Town who makes Xiaolongbao (the pork soup dumplings) quite as well as the owner here does - in fact, most local Chinese places don't even offer them on the menu.

These dumplings are super popular here, and for good reason. They're seriously good, but make sure you have them with vinegar rather than soy sauce. To accompany them, don't miss out on the Sichuan beef (spicy, my personal favourite) and the cucumber & mushroom salad.

The prices are really fair, too, as the owner hasn't changed them for a while. Bring a big group of people, order a bunch of different things and sit at one of the circular tables to share everything.

It's worth doing properly.

Hesheng in Sea Point is currently holding my number one spot for dim sum in the city. It's exceptionally reasonable, and most importantly it's exceptionally authentic and delicious. Here is the stuffed pork mince bun, but anything and everything will be to your liking.

My boyfriend and I had a really wonderful meal here. The dim sum is delicious - especially the pork dumplings. The service is incredible. Such a friendly waitress who was able to manage a full restaurant very well without neglecting any tables. The spring onion pancakes are also a must-have. I look forward to trying the soup and noodle dishes soon!! Thank you! We will be back :)
The food is always good, don't be fooled by the simple decor on not being much. The shiao long bao and beef rolls are recommended. Satisfying for simple dim sum cravings

Not a place that you would go to for the decor and ambiance, however, if you are looking for some tasty dim sum and chinese food then this is THE place. Also... it won't break the bank. I've been here a few times and tasted a range of dishes and haven't been disappointed yet. This is definitely my go-to place when craving some good chinese food. Just make sure you take cash as the do not have card facilities yet.

We've been back again and again for what is always the best Chinese take out in Cape Town without a doubt. My fiancé lived in Hong Kong for a while and so knows her dim sum. He Sheng's xiaolong bao (the first item on the dim sum menu) are made fresh every day and once you've had them be prepared for the craving to be awoken! Always filled with Chinese speaking patrons which in itself speaks volumes of the authenticity of the food (and probably the very reasonable price point).

East is east. How amazing will the world be when we understand each other's cultures. One day.

For now, at least we get an inkling, a sneak peek, even though we most probably still misinterpret the messages.

We decided on Chinese for dinner. Take aways, ordered at the front desk. Cash sales only.

When the manageress pointed towards the inner area with a amiable smile and an invitation to have something to drink. Greg thinks she's offering water when he sees a large container with a clear liquid on tap and proceeds to pour some into a cup when she comes flapping over "No! No! Not Chinese wine for you. There!" (when she herds him towards the fridges at the back displaying cans that she wanted him to buy). Phew, we nearly had a catastrophic break down in international relations! (You have to admit there's a funny side to getting lost in translation!)

Be that as it may, the Beef Chow Mein and Chicken Chop Suey portions were humongous at R80 each. The ingredients were fresh and the sauce was authentic and not overpowering. Presentation in Polystyrene won't win any awards, but the food filled the spot.

West is still west. Will the twains ever meet?
