Openwine is a new reality in South Africa, a little unique gem! They embrace the classic Italian enoteca concept but with a worm modern touch. A wine shop where you can buy wine, stop by and having quick glass or spend an evening eating chatting and drinking. All with deep knowledge of wine and winemakers.

Lovely setting and jazzy music in the background. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We didn’t try the food but it smelt delicious. Highly recommend

A friend and I went to Openwine for dinner. We weren’t sure what to expect. We decided to try all dishes with their paired wines and it was a huge success! Our waitress was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable giving us the best possible experience. The food was delicious and the wine was even better!

ATTENTION WINE ENTHUSIASTS!!!! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

This unique venue is absolutely incredible👌🏾; it's an eclectic mix between a Cafe and a wine store... they sell wine from all over the country, and world both by the glass or bottle (sit down) and for take away if you're cooking a dinner for friends 👨🏽‍🍳🥗

They can give advice about wine pairings, and the owners (a wonderful couple with impeccable taste in all manner of jazz music🎷🎺, and ofcourse 🍷🍷)are always willing to help in whatever way possible...

We indulged in a delicious cheeseboard 🧀🥖and a really affordable and impressive red wine we've all spoken about non-stop since we last paid a visit (🇿🇦Carinus Family Wine called Syrah )... if you want a wine experience but aren't willing to drive out to the winelands 👀🚘 this is your place! Right in the heart of the CBD 🏙

TIP: it's rather popular, so ensure to reserve to make sure you're afforded space.☎️.. on a warm summer's night, sit outside and enjoy your wine, paired with a nibble and the cool summer's night breeze 🍃

Love this little spot for their amazing selection of wines by the glass. You can sit in one of the cosy rooms or on the porch and enjoy your wine. The owners are very knowledgeable about the local wine scene even though they are from Italy. They also serve small plates of food which are great for a light meal or snack to go with your wine.

Recently, on my way to a specific tribunal to sort out something annoying, I stepped into an empty space that looked like a painted carpet on the cement floor. As I did that, out of the main door steps out the restaurant owner, an amiable Italian by the name of Raphael Paternititi. We chatted in Italian, then moved to English and as I, in the process, followed him indoors to meet his wife Marta Gobbo, we moved on to French, than back to English. That alone to me was a breath of fresh air. Raphael is half Italian half French, Marta Italian.

Marta and Raphael were living in Trieste until one year ago when they took this bold move to live in Cape Town.

They found that they were experiencing too much stress in Trieste, unlike here in Cape Town. They came up with the idea of wine pairing so a year ago they opened this space in Whale Street, close to the corner with Buidengracht Road that they call an Enoteca 'Wine' merged with 'Collection', a word that is rather common in Europe for this kind of establishment.

The focus is to taste new wines and pair them with the right food. They will charge a 'foodage' (is there such a word?) should you bring your own food, wine not an issue as that is the point of departure for your being there, so corkage is not an issue, but should you have a rare wine that you donate to the restaurant for tasting, you're welcome to bring it along. You budget R250 or so for two.

Marta and Raphael invited me to go to a wine tasting a few days later, which I did, and to my great pleasure I managed to drink a sip of each of the six or seven wines showcased without getting a migraine that probably means the wine didn't have an excessive sulphuric content. I bought there one of the wines for my son's birthday, Camissa.

Different wine producers have wine tasting evenings there regularly, the idea being to afterwards have the wine of your choice with their suggested dinner, displayed at the entrance on a blackboard.

The food was divine, light and tasty but just what I like about the northern Italian cuisine - delicate, elegant, not too many strong flavours or pungent scents, just discreet and subtle. We had an exquisite dish of home-made gnocchi with an artichoke based sauce and an exquisite dessert, a decadent chocolate fondant. I had already sipped too many wines so had no more but my friend Graham continued and found all wines excellent, high standard.

The decor is eclectic, elegant and simple, quite European and trendy, simple but functional.

The location, in the heart of Cape Town, for me unusual but it worked well. They say it is buzzing when there are events in Town on Thursdays, and I promised myself to try that out too.

The menu changes every week and even a Creamy Bacalhau was shown that week, something very few South Africans know about, a Portuguese delicacy that I love.

That evening made me realize that Cape Town is the Monaco of Africa and I was pleased to be back here, my adopted home.

Wonderful way to explore the wines of the Cape, expertly paired with authentic dishes - subtle flavours complement one another in both the food and wine. The hosts are welcoming and knowledgeable and ensure you have a great time. The intimate setting makes for a cozy couple of glasses of wine!

Great idea, awesome experience, in the heart of Cape Town. We had the wine pairing and were delighted by the great service, super friendly staff, and accommodating venue. This place is more about the wine, but make no mistake we had a great overall experience and the food was superb. 5 out of 5...

This place is such a vibe! And it’s best to go Sunday night. They have live music. Beautiful atmosphere. Intimate wine bar so come early if you want a seat it gets crowded. Food is AMAZING. I had the lamb ravioli. My friend had the pizza.

From the outside I don’t think it has that appealing a view. Inside it’s cosy and warm. The staff is very knowledgeable, and are not afraid to say they don’t know something and get colleagues to explain- which I appreciate. Wines are spectacular local wines, organic and natural included (or maybe even exclusively). Perfect place to start or end you evening! The Arancini were nice but not out of the ordinary- going on only those is not a way to predict the whole cuisine and menu so see for yourself on that one!

Was there for live music and wine on Sunday and it was great, would recommend going a bit earlier than 5 PM to get a good seat. The cheese and meat platter is generous and delicious too! The bread was freshly baked. Found it odd that they did not have balsamic vinegar though. Great wine selection too.

Came here to try some wine as we had a very quick stop in Cape Town. We had a fantastic experience, and Israel helped us pick some true SA wine-gems. Savage + Restless river. Snacks very much on point (cheese platter shares with two ppl). We originally came to do wine tasting, and small “downside” is that they only do tastings by the bottle. The “upside” however is that the bottles they help you pick are superb. They even gave us both a guided tour of the different bottles they had in stock. Oh - and they also do live music every Sunday (At the time of posting in 2023). Fantastic place. We will come back whenever we are in Cape Town!!

This is one of the best wine tasting bars anywhere in the world. Here you will find great wines, knowledgeable servers, and a fun time. I live in Napa California, the heart of American high end wine making. And have traveled all throughout the world seeking the best wines and food. This place is tops.

Really nice atmosphere. It was super crowded. Live music is nice. They have tasting for 4 wines to 250 rand. They were out of pinotage and cape blend when we visited, which was not applicable for a south african wine bar :)

Friendly staff with a sense of humour and well informed about the wines they are selling. The kitchen may be small but those ladies throw out BIG flavour! Had the lamb ravioli...my heart was content. Simple delicious flavours. The wine is pretty good too and they have instore specials so go over and see what you can get. Toilet is clean and I didnt have to put my bag on the floor albeit it was pretty clean. Great for after work drinks. Space inside and outside.

If you looking at a library of wines, this would be a great place. The vibe is actually in the part near the pizza oven. It may look vibey in front, but it's nice chill at the back indoors and outside at the back. Pizza we had was good. We were there on a first Thursday. Nice place to start your evening off.
