We just had such a fantastic Mother's Day brunch in this quaint and quirky garden setting. Delicious food and friendly service. The kids loved exploring the garden.
Wonderful place. Very tasty breakfast. Will definitely go there again...
First time at this little gem. Great vibe. Great service. A must visit when you're in the area. Food was really good and well presented. Tami Magnin
We were delighted to find this hidden gem on the other side of the world! Venturing out from Tableview to Diep River is almost as good as roadtripping!
We had seen it advertised on Hyperli, so ventured out for a breakfast special.
We were totally overwhelmed by the secret garden that we found behind the store called The Opposition. The story behind it is wonderful and can be read inside the menu.
The garden is a haven of tranquility which is a green paradise, lush and adorned with a vast array of foliage from cacti to indigenous evergreens.
One enters through a beautiful restorative store which is quite unexpected. Although the walk from the front door to the garden is a short one, it is punctuated by stops to peruse the unique and breathtaking ware.
Tables are dotted around the garden which one plays musical chairs with to dodge the direct sun. Something quite humourous to watch having done that oneself.
Although sitting in the middle of suburbia, one feels transported from the daily hum drum of life which feels so far away. One can escape to a time capsule of tranquility.
This hidden little gem is clearly well known as clients stream in with the ease of familiarity.
While absorbing the wonderland, it is interesting to take in the calm workings of the garden / handyman tinkering with the furniture in a side garage/ work shed. Another similar looking room is in the process of being transformed into a shop of sorts. It is a work in progress which gives one the feeling of being on a farm in the countryside.
The food is well presented although quite expensive and the portions are quite small.
I am always fascinated by the fact that the majority of restaurants that serve breakfast don't quite get the concept of toast. It is regularly served as luke warm cooled off bread.
Having said this, which lost them the fifth star, it is overall a wonderful place and a great experience.
Highly recommended. Pet and child friendly.
This is outdoor dining taken to the extreme. There is only a small covered area and the bulk of the tables are scattered around the back yard under the trees and awning! It's quiet, relaxing and very pleasant indeed. I had the meat meal of the day, a lovely "chicken pie" which was a delicious chicken dish served in a small bowl with a flaky pastry lid but accompanied by huge portions of mash and peas! The presentation was excellent, the flavours great and the portion size more than ample. There was also a small portion of a brown sauce with a very unusual flavour! Looked like a gravy but even the waitress had no idea what it was. I was eventually informed it was "gravy" but it really added nothing to the meal and was the only negative.
The service was prompt but it proved a little difficult to summons the waitress to bring my bill when I was ready to leave! The cappuccino was excellent. All in all a lovely place for a quiet meal on a sunny day.
Tired of our regular brunch spots, we decided to visit The Backyard Cafe this week...and what an awesome place!!
Lovely garden setting and a warm welcome from the friendly staff and resident dog and cat.
Loved the menus, which come in old book covers, and blankets are provided if you're feeling a bit chilly.
We ordered tea and coffee, which both came with a yummy, heart-shaped shortbread biscuit. Mum ordered the filled croissant with scrambled egg, bacon and cheese, which looked and apparently tasted great. My sister and I decided on the Good Banter breakfast (and added toast), which kind of defeated the purpose...i know :) The breakfast was delicious and soooo filling, we both struggled to finish. Try adding the feta to the creamed spinach...heaven!! This may be my favourite new breakfast dish :)
My one negative is that they charge R10 for one tiny piece of toast, however given the size of the breakfast, it was not needed.
Was really impressed overall, and will definitely be back!!
I'd been hearing a lot of good things about the backyard cafe,so I decided to check it out with my mom and sister for brunch.
It's quaint and unpretentious, and beautifully quiet -a really good choice if you don't want to be in a super cramped and noisy restaurant.
Service was swift, the menus are adorable, and the general vibe is calm and happy. And the food? Well, it was good, but I did feel that there was certainly room for improvement.
I ordered a ginger flavoured latte which was not great. The ginger flavour tasted artificial and somehow there was more of a coconut tatste to it. My sister's iced coffee was delicious, though.
As for the breakfasts, mum had a basic scrambled eggs breakkie with tomatoes and mushrooms. No complaints. The sister had an eggs benny , delicious hollandaise in which I would have happily bathed! Only issue was that the white of her eggs were a bit runny. I went sweet, and ordered the flapjack stack with bacon and berries. It was lovely, but really needed some more coulis or syrup for the amount of flapjacks given... it got a little dry.
So, the food was not perfect , but was certainly yummy, and it's a lovely place (complete with a friendly sleeping kitty!) , so I'll definitely be back to try out their lunch menu
Had a lovely tea party outside in the courtyard/garden.
A good variety of sweet and savoury treats.
The chocolate brownies were amazing and the cappuccino's are great!
Friendly and efficient service.
A real hidden gem just off the main road.
A colleague of mine suggested the backyard cafe sometime back and I've eagerly been waiting to bring my friends here, but sadly our experience wasn't all that great. I had a sandwich and added chicken, I could smell the chicken was boiled which put me off. The rest of my sandwich was nice, but nothing extraordinary. The service was slow throughout and when we wanted to leave we had to go look for the waitress, only to find her sitting on her phone. I really like the garden area and there have been plenty of positive reviews, so it was disappointing, but maybe we just went on an off day/time of the day.
One of my new favourite breakfast spots. Beautiful garden setting. Array of delicious breakfasts to choose from (lots of vegetarian and vegan options). And an adorable cafe cat. A hidden gem.
Excellent breakfast at the backyard cafe, good coffee and great service. Wonderful setting in the garden, quaint perfection! Will definitely be making another trip for there for the excellent eggs benedict 👌🏽
Served by a lovely waitress called Talent. Food was delicious and homemade. Beautiful quite garden with adorable kitty called Chipotle. Great coffee that comes with a little biscuit. Little bit confusing to find the restaurant (they're at the back of a furniture shop). They just brought out a new menu. A definite must visit.
