Review The Blue Cafe - Cape Town Central

Simonay
A quick turnaround time cafe because it's size. But nonetheless quaint, cute, local and loved by the neighbourhood. Feels like you're sitting on a sidewalk in Europa. Coffee and croissants were amazing, the atmosphere was relaxing and the staff was friendly. Perfect way to start the day.

Sometimes you find hidden gems in a neighborhood. This is one of them. As a tourist it’s not easy to find good spots but this is one of them. Hidden in a really nice street where are the locals come and enjoy their food. I would go here every single time. One thing; I know you have your breakfast fresh, honest and good. But presenting food in a plastic cup is not what I would do. It tasted wonderful but it let go the charmes of freshness. But a big 5 star rating. It’s really nice to eat here

This has to be my favorite place in Cape Town! Great Coffee, homemade food and spectacular cakes. Special thanks to Adrian, the friendliest, most courteous and funniest waiter I have ever met. Long live the King!

The Blue Café is a great café. The food is well presented and tastes delicious. Our Waiter was knowledgeable on the menu and friendly. The prices are relatively good for the great food you are getting. Blue Cafe is a great Neighbourhood Café with comfortable seating indoor and outdoor and a nice homey feel. I would recommend coming for a nice quiet lunch here on a Sunny day. :)

A cute little cafe! Lovely to sit on the street in the sun surrounded by beautiful houses. Great coffee, great food menu!!

It's a lovely and quiet little cafe on the slopes of Lions Head, with lovely Victorian row houses across the street. A favourite of locals and tourists (it seemed), but the service and coffee were pretty good. If you're looking for something off the beaten path but not too far from the busier Kloof Street haunts, this is a nice option.

Lovely and quirky little gem. Beautiful views and tasty food.

What a delightful place! We were looking for a new place to spend quiet time in conversation, somewhere different and with ambiance, and The Blue Cafe exceeded those expectations. Quirky, charming, warm - it was so lovely and I am so pleased to have found it!

Absolutely magic place for Food, Drinks and awesomoness with views Lions Head. Great menu, fantastics staff and just a great atmosphere. Especially Waiter Adrian is a legend. He is super alert, friendly and Shows a mood and working-attitude, that is outstanding. The Kitchen-Staff performs extremly well and the coffee is one of Cape Towns best. Always a highlight sitting there on Brownlow Road. One more time: our favourite restaurant for us in CPT!

This is a very cosy and relaxing coffee place, in the suburb of Cape town. The staff is friendly and there are Plenty of options for breakfast with fresh products. Coffee is good And reasonably priced. We came to this coffee 4 times in a row. The atmosphere is very nice, and the place faces table mountain and lion heads, giving you a nice view while enjoying your meal there. They also have extended hours which is quite rare for such a small place. If you are a coffee lover you should go there and not be in a rush as service je a bit slow but this is part of it.

Quaint! Vibey! Food is great! Coffee is great! A good spot to visit for a quick bite to eat or a coffee date. Also great as a pitstop for delicious hummus, chips and freshest juices!

Lovely cafe. Could apply a bit more attention to detail with the food e.g. warm the plate so the scrambled eggs don't arrive cold, warm the croissant added to the meal, make sure the soft boiled eggs are soft not medium-hard. Minor issues. Will go back again.

Nice authentic cafe! Great fresh food!

After the hike on lion's head we were tired an hungry and we find on google maps this fantastic small, nice and welcoming café in a particularly cute area of the city! We tried traditional breakfast and drinks and everything was delicious! Super gentle staff! Don't miss this place and take advantage to visit also the area!

Dit was baie lekker en intreressant gewees, veral die geskiedenis van die plekkie.

I've been visiting the cafe nearly daily during my stay in Cape Town. Love the atmosphere ... Love the food! Hot chocolate warmed my soul one cold day & the Brie, bacon & fig pizza is a favorite. Need comfort? Try the chicken pie. Yum! Thanks for being my little home office away from home. <3

My first time...really enjoyed it...very quaint..wr sat outside under the umbrella beautiful views..food good service little slow had to go and ask for our bill..we will be back

Such a beautiful little deli, serving excellent coffee in a really cosy set-up. Friendly staff, and exceptional service, not to mention that the coffee stays hot / cools down at snails speed!!!
Antonio Rivers
I had the Chicken Pie and it was great. Nice hidden gem, excellent service as well.

Gone down in my estimation. Pity. The last two times there have been very mediocre at best and the toughest meat in a curry I have ever had the last time. Inedible.

This has long been my local, thru Daly's Deli, and you can't beat the setting. But something has changed. Never mind portions getting smaller and soggier as the prices go up, but staff seems to be changing a lot too. Go for a coffee, but eat somewhere else.

Lovely place to hang out at on a warm day. Good food.

Had the Full Monty breakfast. Beautifully made, kitchen was a bit slow, but luckily I wasn't in a rush.

Lovely charming little place, we visited a few times while visiting CT, it's my sons local coffee shop. Relaxing and welcoming

Blue cafe has changed since opening under the new brand. I find it also overpriced and only go if necessary. Great pity as it us around the corner and would like to use it more often. Service can be very slow.

This place is a little gem. Amazing food and really special staff!

Absolutely love this spot and the fact that breakfast is served til 2pm on the weekends. (The freshly baked Nutella cupcake isn't bad either, actually it's the best I've had!! )

The Blue Cafe’s chicken pie came highly recommended and - as a take-away - did not disappoint at all. We’ll definitely be back for another helping.

My friend had the bacon, green fig and brie pizza, since I don't eat meat I had a bite of the side - even that was mouthwateringly delicious!

Very very cute deli/cafe! Interesting trinkets, from gorgeous crockery to droëwors that's been voted the best by some Afrikaans council.

I had the lentil and butternut bobotie. Definitely very yummy, but would've liked it to be served with a grain, like rice or quinoa, on the side

There's this hidden little section with extra seats in the basement. Looks very cosy which could be the perfect hideout on a cold day.

This place oozes what Tamboerskloof is all about. It's surprisingly obscure, since it's almost tucked away in broad daylight. It's a very small and quaint cafe and you can even buy some fresh items such as bread, milk and eggs. The mood is laid back like brunches or lazy afternoon lunches should be. Food is clean and simple. With refreshing combos I haven't seen around. Will definitely return!

This morning I'm at The Blue Cafe - it's such a tiny little spot in the heights of Tamboorskloof. When I say tiny I'm talking like that have one table inside and few extra tables along the sidewalk. I was lucky enough to find a secluded nook behind a spekboom screen and it has the best view of lions head and gorgeous Victorian homes that line the streets.

I needed a sweet pick me up and some decent coffee so cake was in order. They only had a baked ricotta cheesecake today so I ordered that and my standard cappuccino. The coffee and cake came together on very brightly colored plates which I thought was a really nice touch.

My coffee didn't have any micro foam on top and stirring immediately broken up what foam there was there. The coffee blend isn't to my fancy but it's strong and not burnt. The cheesecake immediately makes me think of the chemical I used to work with in varsity O-Vanillin anybody that has worked with it immediately identifies that sweet vanilla scent but there is just something very strongly artificial about it at the same time. For this reason alone I didn't enjoy the cake.

I like that small shop inside offers bespoke handcrafted items and curated deli meats, olive oil and sweet things.

Such a cute and cosy restaurant! Had one of the best cappuchinos there and the pizza's was delicious! I will def bw back again! Loved the vibe.

The Blue Café is a local coffeeshop which is just 2 streets away from my home.
As 'n huge coffee lover, they really have a nice cup when you need it most and their butter cakes are totally amazing!
They also have the necessities when you don't want to go into town.
Truly a hidden gem!
They only have a few tables, but for colder months there is a cute basement as well.
Blue Cafe is my favourite neighbourhood, go-to spot. Super chilled, great relaxing vibe and good food. My favourite is the Refreshing Breakfast and ALL of the pizza's (from 5pm only). Fantastic thin and crispy base! They are open until 10pm as well, so great for birthday dinners in the bottom part of the restaurant. Nothing fancy - good, wholesome food and great service to be expected.

This sidewalk cafe puts visions of Europe to shame. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, it's the spot for a lazy conversation over a glass of wine or a nibble. The main meals can be disappointing, but the ambience and the peanutbutter biscuits make up for this. Good service and the blue hues make it a calming space

This neighborhood coffee hub is friendly and warm. It is a small spot in Tamboerskloof that offers all you need in close proximity to your home. You can buy the basic groceries, have a great coffee, a snack, breaki, some cake or a light meal. Their coffee is really good and so is their food. I'm a huge fan of their banting risks- probably the best of their kind. I enjoy their homely feel. I love their cute quotes displayed on the plates and around the restaurant.

It is a bit small and often difficult to find seats. Staff also seem a bit overwhelmed when the store is busy.

But I'd definitely recommend this spot!

Staff extremely unhelpful. Took such effort to even get their initial attention!! Wont be making the effort to go there again.. Plenty of other great places in ct to visit instead.

Popped in for a quick cappuccino and toasted sandwich. Well was I blown away! The cappuccino was presented beautifully and tasted even better. Ordered a toasted bacon, cheese, tomato and onion. The first time ever I've had a meal without seasoning or condiments - it was THAT good! Friendly and efficient service, lots of goodies to buy. I am looking forward to trying the rather large jar of onion marmalade :)

I've been here on two occasions and it's always been a pleasure. Relaxed, friendly service. Great food, big portions. Definitely a favourite :)

The Blue Cafe is a quaint place with seating on the street side or in a super cute basement. The service is slow so don't expect anything to happen quickly. I had the chicken pie which was a bit runny but had a large amount of chicken in it and came with a yummy side salad. I wouldn't say it's the best cafe but it does have a cool vibe and is a nice hidden gem.

One of my favourite breakfast spots in town. The place is quaint and has a very homely feel to it. Surprised that there are a few bad reviews on this site. I've been there more than 10 times over the past year and have never had a bad experience. Not once! The food is tasty and the cakes are delicious too. The carrot cake, almond cake, tiramisu and their home baked Turkish breads are absolutely amazing!

The European street side café vibe saves the day for what we thought was a hidden gem. Unfortunately the service and food wasn't up to expectations. Our food was delivered to us and we had to wait another 5mins for cutlery. Only to notice one of the waiter's hair had dropped onto the food. The food was tasty, however we've had better. The lovely setting is probably what made us rate this as an average and not bad experience. Maybe we'll try breakfast next time...?

Best to arrive at Blue Cafe with relaxed expectations, as service is generally slow and much time might be spent looking around wondering if anyone is going to take a coffee order, while actually there are some beautiful houses to take in, and the soft neighbourhood sounds to absorb beyond the caffeine-deprived internal monologue. Once staff (and coffees) show up, it's a pleasant surprise. Greetings are sincere and flavours are worth-the-wait. We found our food quite basic, but in a charming way. The old quirks of the former establishment, the Daily Deli, seem to have carried through into the descriptions of the menu items. Perhaps it's something in the water? All in all, worth a visit, when you've got the time, and an open mind.

Excellent little neighbourhood cafe. The food is great though a bit repetitive. The store inside stocks essentials which is always handy. Bakery is great too. But the service - it often let's them down.

A beautiful street side cafe, nestled in the heart of Tamboerskloof. A real #hiddengem and my favorite spot to grab a coffee and cake with friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The flourless chocolate cake is delicious - think very chocolatey and dense. I have also had their chicken salad for dinner which, as far as chicken salads go, really set the bar high. The service hasn't always been that great though so if you go definitely be patient.

Awesome little hidden treasure. Good authentic food. And they play my kind of tunes in the background, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson. Unique cutlery and crockery also sets the tone.
Margot Johnson
Charming hidden treasure - very relaxed vibe. Perfect Neighbourhood cafe with relaxed on street eating... Limited menu with no booze (but bring your own). I'd recommend for a relaxed snack or light dinner, with a casual glass of wine, slow but beautiful vibe with stunning sunset view of lions head. The salad was just ok, the pizza was good, service slow but charismatic, cheesecake could improve, coffee was wonderful... Details, story and added charm was delightful... Yes I agree that "coffee is like licking honey off a razor blade"...

This place reminds me that we do have beautiful suburbs and makes me want to get to know my neighbours...

Great food and really enjoy the relaxed vibe. Pizzas are nice and coffee is good. The slowish service has never bothered me as the staff are friendly and it's not that sort if place where you rush.

Look, it's quaint and friendly. The food is also rather tasty and reasonably priced. But, it's inexcusable that everything takes so long. Always. Recommendation: the Full Monty and a Japanese Coffee.

What a wonderful little cafe tucked away in beautiful Tamboerskloof - awesome atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious healthy meals and respectable prices..

Very quaint setting on the sidewalk. Unusual but interesting menu prepared to absolute perfection. One of my best meals in Cape Town, with great service. The ricotta cheesecake an absolute must.

Really like this little street cafe. Had such a friendly waiter with such a good sense of humour. Food was fresh and delicious served in a very quirky style. Perfect start to a relaxed day.
Enjoyed breakfast so much decided to come back for dinner. Total difderent story. They had such atterude. Refused to put 2 four seater tables together to accomodate a party of 9. Said they could to parties of 6 at each table. Lost our business. Taking my rating from a 4 to a 1
Innes Du Preez
Very nice and chilled little breakfast spot. The food was good albeit a bit small however it was not overpriced. Service was good with friendly waiters. Coffee was decent with interesting option like Japanese style coffee. The fresh juices were also delicious.

Came back for dinner after the lovely breakfast however the waiter was rude and wanted to squash a party of 9 around two small tables whilst there were bigger tables available. When asked why we can't put 2 bigger tables together he said that he could fit 6 people around each table. Felt like he was much more interested in making money than pleasing customers

What a little gem here just out of reach of the hustle and bustle of Cape Town CBD. Very well priced - I ate a "baby monte", which is scrambled eggs on a Turkish flat bread with bacon and tomatoes. It was perfectly sized and light. Only R32 for the dish! I had freshly squeezed grapefruit juice that was divine. The coffee is great as well - they offer a choice between dark Italian and medium roast beans for the Base of your coffee. Highly recommended!

Just had the worst experience here. Were cheerfully received by the waitress who tried to accommodate us but then made to feel we were an inconvenience by the very rude and grumpy manager - happy to have our 7 breakfasts elsewhere! Will avoid in future!
