Review Tjing Tjing - Cape Town Central

Talitha Kannemeyer
Wonderful experience. Waiters were very helpful with the menu options and her recommendations were spot on. Great vibe inside, is small so can imagine if they are full it might be a bit tight. The service was fast. We ordered a variety of items and all shared which I would recommend. High light was the ribs, rice balls and the fries. Portions are a bit small for the price but considering it's unique foods "Japanese" inspired we didn't mind the cost.

Amazing food, warm and cozy atmosphere and very kind and accommodating staff. 100% recommend their food, especially their crispy rice balls, steamed buns and dumplings.
Allie
Super cool drinks and fun appetizers. The Mochi donuts were the best Mochi donuts ever.
Yimale Kumwenda (Yimzy Motif)
An absolute fave in Cape Town! The vibe is chilled and cool. The service is brilliant: fast and friendly. We enjoyed the food and drink options on the menu. The food was fresh and the drinks were refreshing. Only downside was the location isn’t the nicest on the outside.

Edit: about a year later, also ended up at the rooftop bar for early evening drinks. Very dependable location, views and vibe that’s been around for years and doesn’t disappoint. Seemed a bit quieter upstairs than I remember it but 🤷‍♂️ Went to the Torii bar downstairs. Really good Japanese food, not impeccable throughout but honestly some of the best you’ll get in Cape Town. Ambiance and decor is fantastic and the range of dishes is also good. Will come back.

A really delightful Japanese tasting menu at this really well decorated venue in the cbd. I got to have a traditional kaiseki style tasting paired menu at the Momiji. Every dish that I had I enjoyed and it took me back to time spent in japan tasting food like this. Attention to detail and amazingly balanced plates of food. All authentically flavoured, using the best ingredients. I appreciated that each plate was served with a menu card describing the dish we were sampling. Our server was great too with her explanations and with warm interaction. A truly enjoyable experience. I will definitely be going back to try the ramen bar as well, it looked really good too.

Great place to go for a modern Japanese dining experience. The cocktails are tasty and their food is well-made. My friends and I ordered some small plates to share. The Cucumber salad was pretty refreshing and flavourful, just wished the portion was larger for the price. The fried rice balls were pretty bland but went well with the aubergine dish which was tangy and addictive. The mochi balls were very sweet and sticky, give it a try if you're into really sweet desserts.

Really nice rooftop bar in the CBD area. Nice variety of cocktails and lots of vegetarian food options along with the more usual Japanese cuisine. Everything tasted great!

We went on the last First Thursday of the year and it was really dope. It got packed pretty quickly but we still had a good time. Their drinks are really delicious and the general atmosphere is awesome. Very aesthetically pleasing as well.

After going a few times for drinks I finally made it for dinner. I was so impressed. The menu is larger and diverse but everything we ordered was great. I had 3 cocktails as well. Each of them was interesting, well though out and perfectly balanced. Definitely a favorite of mine.

Woooow! The decor here is so cute! The rooftop bar is chilled and great for sun downers or a party. The bar bites are very tasty. Can't wait to try the other two levels of this place :)
Kudzai Sachikonye
An entirely enjoyable experience. Food was exceptional. The only downside was that selecting from the menu was a bit of a blindsighted activity but with a group of about five, nobody was disappointed with their order which is a sure good sign that everything on the menu is good Haha. If you're looking for more than just dinner and a bit of a food experience, at a very reasonable price, pay a visit.

I think one of best rooftop places in Cape Town. Decor beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. The top is great for drinks with friends (does get crowded) Cocktails are good and strong. Restaurant is slight pricey but food tastes great
Mark
The restaurant has a rooftop bar which serves drinks. The barmen did not appear to have much awareness of who was waiting and were impossibly slow when I attempted to get a drink (the bar was moderately busy - 3 people to a barman) On our second order, my wife took over to ease my frustration but came back 15 min later empty handed saying she couldn't handle the obvious incompetence of the barman.

One of my favourite places to grab a drink in the evenings! They have great service and amazing cocktails - try their Porn Star Martini! The intimate space and unique decor creates a lovely ambiance for a night out.

I've never not had a fun time at this unsuspecting bad. When my mates told me we were having drinks at Tjing Tjing, I thought, "I can't imagine getting sufficiently rowdy in a Chinese restaurant." But when we ascended the illusively dimly lit stairs and emerged into a spacious and sophisticated loft-type rooftop bar I was blown away!

The view of the Cape Town city skyline will take your breath away.

We were there to enjoy their cocktails and enjoy them we did. I managed to drain my Old Fashioned, Asian Persuasion, Cucumber Cooler, Cosmopolitan and Classic Martini and still have room for more! Their mixologists are just that good at what they do.
If you enjoy a well-made cocktail and a view that really is a feast for your eyes, you'll make this inner-city hangout your regular spot

A hidden gem.

Great atmosphere and always a great place to begin your night when heading out into town. The music is just right and it attracts a vibrant crowd.

My favorite cocktail on the menu is the Jelly Baby Cocktail.
Paupie
Love the vibe and atmosphere here !!!

The food is honestly so good and fresh,
So many amazing flavors!!!

Can't wait to go back

Great service delicious cocktails !!!

My go-to place on Thursday through to Saturday nights in terms of hitting the nightlife scene in Cape Town. The decor is very nice- dark but well lit with comfortable chairs and the outdoor benches offer pillows and blankets on cold nights.
Never gets too full where one can't move or breathe and the cocktails are too die for! They're definitely worth the price and it's lovely watching the Baristas making them.

Good music. Loud but not pumping loud that you're unable to think clearly. Definitely good for drinks out with friends if you're not looking for a club or anything remotely close to it.
Jarita Hagrid Kassen
Delicious finger food, perfect Asian inspired accompaniments to cocktails. The tender, sweet pork belly skewers and fried sushi rice squares are definitely my favorite. The cocktails were quite sweet and fruit, would recommend the Sake Sour. The kitchen closes at about 22h30 which is early given its business hours. More lighting is needed, but overall an above average experience!
Rayne Alexander
A lovely and quirky venue. Nice prices and gorgeous layout of food. Don't drink too much as you have to tackle some crazy stairs on the way out ;)
Jess Scott
Amazing interesting drinks and a beautiful location. One of my favorite cocktails is the jelly baby cocktail which is super delicious and interesting! Also obsessed with the sesame broccoli and the tempura mushrooms!

Second stop on a First Thursday night out for 10 of us. We hadn't booked anywhere, and after battling to secure a booking at about 10 spots we hadn't tried before, we reverted to Tjing Tjing.

Couldn't get in the two restaurant floors, so went up to the rooftop bar, ordered Gin's, wine, and beers, and settled into the buzz. Place was equally packed, with no space in the rooftop open area, but we managed to secure a large table in the corner. Open window gave us coolness, and the food was great. Tried pork, beef, tuna, and others including broccoli, brinjal, and cauliflower (voted best vegetarian option)
Arno Dockel
Great, young and sophisticated vibe combines to make this a great dining experience. Couple that with clean but structured dishes with complex and multi layered flavors not to mention the great wine, for a complete dining experience.
Junior, our waiter, added to the happy and friendly atmosphere and made it all come together beautifully.
Lourens
A hidden surprise. Great atmosphere and design in the upstairs lounge. The food was super, the barman even remembered what we had to drink a week later when we visited again. Not to be missed on a night out.
Danica Astra Prout-Jones
I was super impressed with the delicious tapas we were treated to at Tjing Tjing. I was there with my dad for a WineMag function and the experience was wonderful from the moment we walked in. Following the formalities and the presentation of the Wine Awards, the Tjing Tjing waiters walked around with trays of beautifully presented and deliciously smelling Tapas snacks. From crumbed risotto balls to saucy muscles to vegetarian sushi, everything I tasted went down singing hymns. Tjing Tjing is well known for coming alive at night and for offering an impressive cocktail and tapas menu. I look forward to going back and trying some of these as I'm sure my experience was only a sample of what else is on offer at this funky rooftop restaurant.

Went for dinner here to celebrate my boyfriend's mum's birthday. Definitely some of the best food I have ever eaten. The menu does look a bit strange but it's all fantastic. The portions are very small so I'd suggest ordering two or three dishes for yourself or ordering a whole lot of dishes and sharing. The duck pancakes are delicious and so is the triple fried chicken. The service is absolutely fantastic! It is quite expensive so if you're looking for an affordable restaurant this isn't it. But when you do have the money, it's worth it!
Ash Pash
Can't believe I've walked past this little place every day for almost 2 years without popping in. Cocktails are super yummy, will totally be back to try the chow. Updates to follow.

Came here for the first time on a date with my boyfriend and we had the best night: This place is gorgeous - warm, cosy, rustic decor - and the vibe is electric. The beats they layed down were on point. The cocktails I had were deliciously tasty. Overall the experience was a holistic one. The only fault would be that the venue is not very big for how popular it is so has a tendency to be crowded
Francesca Favero
I have been to Tjing Tjing many times, but have never eaten anything there. The fact that I am giving the place a rating of 4, based on drinks service and general atmosphere alone should tell you something. Fantastic outdoor area. Great place to hang out with friends and have a couple of drinks. Also a good place to bring people from out of town.
Murray Lovemore
Great for a meet up with friends to have a couple of drinks. Good cocktails and a nice rooftop venue to enjoy. Even recommended for small functions.
Iman Bawa
Love this little place, not easy to find but definitely worth the search. I don't drink so I was not able to taste the alcoholic beverages but the virgin mojito I had was delicious and so was the tapas I tested. It can get really packed but not it a way they makes it uncomfortable. The atmosphere is amazing and really inviting
Ulisha Moodley
Been to Tjing Tjing a few times. Love the vibe and drinks. My favorites would definitely be the cotton candy, jelly baby and the porn star martini. The service at the bar is quite slow when trying to order a drink and even slower when they're really busy so that's annoying. Otherwise it's a great spot.
Chantelle Lamusse
This rooftop bar is unique and just plain awesome in the CBD. Coming from Pretoria it's amazing to see how different and unique all places are in CBD. Hidden in a road just off Bree street - Longmarket. We were there on a Saturday night it was pumping maybe a bit too much to my liking and getting drinks was a bit of a mission. But once drinks arrived it was good. So purely on a drinks and atmosphere rank this place is somewhere that I will continue going.
Guy Blackhurst
For a while now, Tjing Tjing has been at the very top of my list of cocktail spots in Cape Town. I'm not sure how others feel, but when I'm paying R60 - R100 for a drink I appreciate a bit of showmanship. The bartenders are always extremely enthusiastic and expressive in their craft. If you're looking for a good Old Fashioned with a side of pyrotechnics, do yourself a favour and pay Tjing Tjing a visit. The bar is usually packed and there is always an energetic vibe. If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing spot, this may not be the one for you.
Sylvia Toso
Atmospheric attic bar w cozy feel. Loved the couch seating, music and decor but drinks we had were kind of a let down and service was s l o w. My jelly baby cocktail was basically a huge glass overflowing with shaved ice and a few skewered jelly babies on top. Its debatable but there may have been some juice and alcohol somewhere in there. Husband's litchi martini take two was just okay, first one was a weak disaster. Maybe we hit them on an off night, will try again.
Danieljake
Had a mid First Thursdays cocktail here with some friends. Beautiful looking bar. You use the same entrance to get inside as Dear Me. The outside area is fantastic with an interesting view of the city rooftops. My friend Abigail and I shared the 'Candy floss' cocktail which was incredible - it genuinely tasted like candy floss, I was pleasantly surprised to be honest. Will definitely come back. I also want to try their restaurant out
Amy Engelbrecht
Love this space and atmosphere. Only ever had drinks here but the drinks were awesome and a really great overall experience. Would definitely recommend
Mark Keith Odayan
A new spot I've come to enjoy in Cape Town! Everything about this place resonates with me such as the location, people and drinks. Always a great night in store when you stop by Tjing Tjing.
Ivanna Abigail Kemp
I can't believe I haven't been here sooner. This place is a gem! It's absolutely amazing. Do stop here for an intimate drink session, great music, the best cocktail AND the best popcorn you'll ever have. Yesss popcorn.
Talia Lee Cohen
The cocktails are tempting and rightly so! But steep prices. The wine is great and the finger snacks, delicate and delicious soba edamame salad 😃 best for a winter hangout; except when it's busy, a drink order inevitably takes forever as so many cocktails are constantly being made.
Azele Anne Naicker
Tjing tjing bar has a really great vibe. The Asian persuasion cocktail is probably one of the best cocktails I've ever had. Even though the bar is a bit small it's decorated beautifully and the rooftop element shines when it's busy on weekends.
Mohit Sureka
I would recommend heading to Tjing Tjing mostly on Friday Saturday night for it's amazing coziness and vibe. The decor is all wood with an attic feel around the place. They have a good selection of cocktails but limited type of drinks! The food is slightly over priced from tori and is average. Would head there for drinks again.
Phoebe Kondylis
This has been a popular spot for many years and it's not hard to see why. Not only is it magnificent in summer being situated on a roof top and with an open roof but everything from the drinks to food is sublime. The wine selection is good, the cocktails delicious and the Asian style tapas are great. The staff are friendly and it is always vibey. The only downside is conquering the stairs after a few too many ;)
Princess Petra
One of my Cape Town favourites! I cannot get enough of the place. Love the vibe and the decor. Their cocktails are some of the best I've had. The staff are friendly and the service good. I've found that it is good place to start a night out (if you are planning on bar hopping) because it can get very full and very busy as the night goes on.
Chanel Pillay
I've been to Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar a few times at night and for the first time during the day this past Friday.

It was a lovely sunny afternoon to take advantage of the outside area. Previously, I always thought the place was a bit small because we were quite cramped on the busy nights I went there however, the space is perfect and airy during the day.

I tried the cocktails while my boyfriend sipped on Corona. The first cocktail that I tried was recommended to me and it was lovely, its called the Cotton Candy. The second cocktail I tried was the Jelly Baby cocktail which was a complete miss, the flavour was not to my liking.

The service was good and the bartender was friendly.
Janomi
Hidden away from the rush. Up the stairs and you discover this cool and funky place. The most awesome cocktail Menu by far. Not cheap but very hip and funky place.
Neil McBain
Awesome little spot. Interesting small quirky dishes, really cool chill out lounge section and even better rooftop bar. A must to bookmark.
Lisa Nyoka
The vibe at Tjing tjing is really nice and chilled, not a place to go too if you're looking for a club vibe. But it's amazing for drinks and a good chilled night out with mates. The pornstar martini and berry mojito are my favourite cocktails there !
Adrian Kaplan
Great spit for sundowners and after work drinks if you work in the CBD. Friendly bar staff and great cocktails...i usually go for a Mojito. Superb spot!
Vivien Natasen
This amazing venue is tucked away off Longmarket Street. We went past for sundowners after a day at the polo. It's a small venue that fills up very quickly and everyone vies for the open section.

They have a short tapas styled menu. We had the oysters, chicken bites, seared tuna etc. Everything was great. The Japanese baked cheese cake desserts though we're dry and tasteless, however their homemade iced cream was great.

Cocktails are to die for. My favourite was the Ginger-tini.

Our waiter was extremely helpful. So was the manager, who was apologetic about the cheesecake.

Will definitely go back.
Ilse Liebenberg
Awesome little rooftop bar. The cocktails are fresh and tasty. They serve a bread and cheese board that looks incredible!! The Porn star cocktail is a definite must.
Pia
Went here on a Wednesday night for a drink and some snacks and were not disappointed. The Cocktails were strong but also tasteful and the location was just beautiful! Also the snacks were delicious. We will definately come here again!

I have been to Tjing Tjing a few times, always for cocktails or wine and I've always loved it! The place has a really cool vibe, great decor and nice music! It has never occurred to me that they have a fabulous tappas bar as well! Last night, whilst enjoying a glass of wine, my friend said that she's hungry and we should "go somewhere" for a snack- and then I clicked that Tjing Tjing has tappas!

We ordered 3 tappas to share. Our original order was the pork Bao, pork belly skewer and tuna tataki. Unfortunately both the pork belly and tuna were sold out, so we had to change our order.
We changed it to the beef tataki and the Lime-cured fish. I have never been so happy that we had to change our order, because both the fish and beef were to die for! Every bite, better than the next!

I never even tasted the bao, but my friend said it was just as amazing!

Honestly, those two plates were the best tappas I've had! The flavour combinations were perfect! The Chenin Blanc I had with the fish, was the perfect love affair! (Although I should've checked the price of the chenin- it was quite expensive).

I will be back for more... Soon!
Anna Dahl
went on a Wednesday evening with a bunch of people of friends for free wine tasting, we had like 4 free bottles to ourselves. The staff is great, we ordered light bites, they were fine. very good place @ sun downers, its on a busy street but being on roof top keeps the noise away. coming back on free tasting evening.
Avukile Mabombo
Not many spots do cocktails better than these guys. The vibe is always good and on a good weather day, it's an awesome place to be. I only wish the roof was higher up to take advantage of the city views and not obscured by other buildings, but I'll live.
MelbourneLops
Tjing Tjing - beautiful rooftop bar, cocktails, wine (free weekly wine tasting) and a proper vibe when the sun goes down. We've had a couple of great nights here and will always pop in for a visit when we're in the area. Comfy inside and outside seating and have always had friendly and professional service. Also, they are one of the stops on the tuning the vine wine event in nov and dec and they are so worth a visit.

Looking for a snack, I was directed to the beef hot dogs, and had to search for the beef. If seafood is not your thing - and it isn't mine - then you aren't aiming for their sweet spot. It's a cool scene, but even then it seems confused - sports are playing on multiple screens, and yet the decor and location don't match that if a sports bar.
Zahir Mohamed
I'm appalled and utterly embarrassed at the level of service and the tone of the barman at this establishment if he worked for me he'd be fired on the spot! This place is completely empty and he is not willing to combine a bill this is unacceptable! And our table was not cleared and for what it's worth I will never return even if I was paid! TERRIBLE!!!!
Jodi King
I love this place! I had my birthday here and it was a perfect evening! The vibe was exactly what I wanted- smaller and intimate yet we all had a good dance and a few delicious cocktails!

I ordered two platters- they were yummy but not amazing! The bar staff were very friendly. Overall I had a really enjoyable night!
Sue-Ann Fourie
Awesome setting, delicious tapas and creative cocktails. All served with a healthy dose of excellent service. Always a winner for an after work drink
Kelly Rae Gifford
I am a sucker for rooftop bars - and this one is nicely positioned in the heart of the city. Good place for a few whiskys before you hit the town. The atmosphere is relaxed with some great background music and picks up as the night goes on. More of a bar vibe than a place to sit and eat, but a great spot non the less.
Taahir Matthews
Tjing Tjing has a great Vibe and the space is really chic.
The bar menu food is spectacular - I highly recommend the seared tuna.
I will definitely be returning.
Robert Lutece
Small cosy place, brilliant vibe. Brings together interesting personalities. Drinks are amazing. But it does get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays so getting drinks is a bit difficult from the small bar. Quite a show to watch the bartenders make drinks.
Apol
The vibe is that of a relaxed night out or pre- drinks if you are going club hopping on long street aftewards. The music was my exact genre. You can dance to it if you want or you can just sit and bop your head as you speak with a good looking stranger or friends. The decor is urban authentic too :-)
Morne Visser
Fun and trendy spot to meet friends (or otherwise) and soak up the Cape Town social life, as well as the sights and sounds of the CBD. On the rooftop, you get glimpses of the high-rise buildings around you, while you wait (far too long) for your drinks to be prepared. Who can complain with such a view though? A must-add to your Long Street bar-hopping experience.
Lize
I've been here a couple of times, good quality glassware - yes I'm one of the people who believe whisky and wine taste the best when served in excellent glassware :) love this spot for pre-dinner drinks or a night cap. Nice chilled New York apartment vibe
Naima Njagala
I don't really understand the hype about this being one of the 'best' bars. The cocktails are decent, the music below par, the stools uncomfortable. In my opinion it was an ok bar. The crowd was pretty thin when I went on a Thursday but perhaps we can chalk that down to it being winter period.
Nicole Vrede
I have been going to Tjing Tjing for after work drinks for a quite a while now. It is always our first place of choice as it has a great vibe, New York style space, great cocktails of the day and last night for the first time got to enjoy the tapas.

The fish and chips was absolutely delicious, the batter was tasty and the chips were home made. All the tapas are made into easy to snack on sizes, so you can still hold you glass of wine and snack ;) there aren't really table to eat on so they have thought about this carefully.

It was actually awesome going in Winter as in Summer it is fully booked and you wait in long queues to get a drink at the bar.
Jess Abrams
Tasty drinks, good music, great atmosphere and friendly staff!..............................................................................
William Hillock
What a place! Always buzzing, really good music and awesome cocktails. Attracts a really nice crowd too. Would definitely recommend the whiskey sours cocktail - made the proper way with egg whites. Awesome.
Mademoiselle Nomad
Amazing vibe! I've always had tons of fun there, it does not matter who you go with. I have hosted many of my events there and all my guests loved it. The music is very good, sometimes you can even dance too towards the end of the night. The cocktails are really good. In summer it's really cool to be on the rooftop, half of which is in the open air - magical! I've also been there in winter and the wooden roof & leather chairs makes it cosy and charming. I love that it's not a massively huge bar. It's also rated as one of the top 10 bars in the world so DO visit.
Nosipho Mahlangu
Love this place! . Great decor, nice vibe, friendly barmen and amazing cocktails that taste as good as they look. Victory dance totally happened ;p
Riaan Anker
Very cosy / small .. nice vibe ..

The rooftop is partly covered and the open part on the rooftop is actually small. Make sure you don't sit next to a speaker ... Will blast your ears away ..

The food is finger food / pub snacks ..
James Hickman
Love the vibe in this place! But that is only one area of the review and as this is a food review we need to focus a little on the food in isolation. You get many bars that try and do food and fail, TJingTJing is ABSOLUTLY NOT one of these! The food here is brilliant, just brilliant! Try the Pork Belly, I promise you that you will order it again! The drinks range is great and the cocktails are stylish and well made. All up you should not be disappointed with this place!
Hannah T3
quite an urban jungle vibe, the place is smaller than it is advertised on the website, but it is a good use of space. Definitely a nice place for an after work hang out. Food is pub snacks food with an Asian twist, I would recommend everything on their small but creative menu.
SvN_lovedining
I went to Tjing Tjing for drinks with friends on a hot December summer day. It was a great option as they have misty sprinklers which cools you down while you enjoy a Mojito and catch up with friends.

The Bar was just hard to find if you don't know where to look. But once you find it you will never forget!
Sylvie Silvermann
For romantic drinks and snacks in Cape Town, go here. The decor is perfect and fresh. The design and architecture is intriguing and inspiring and the lighting the best in Cape Town. Bathrooms were spotless and clean and rooftop reminiscing of Seville in Spain with a touch of minimalism. Definitely worth every cent. The only negative is the somewhat slow and somewhat uninspiring music and looped images shown on a TV screen. I would simply switch off that TV screen and let the perfect setting sooth you into your week - end. Perfection...almost...
Tessa Catherine Donne Randall
What a wonderful night out. The best bar, on this girl’s night out, was Tjing Tjing. If only the stars were out, but you guys can’t help that.

The vibe was great, busy and laughter all around - from those delicious cocktails of course!
I tried the Cotton candy, Jelly Baby and Cherry Blossom. Bar far the winner has to be…

Cotton Candy, it is just amazing.

Will defiantly go back with my girls
Amy B
Delightful, funky, very vibey bar. Their rooftop deck is a hit on summer nights especially with one of their signature cocktails in hand. My favourite is the Cotton Candy cocktail. Their tapas are also delish.
