Review The Granary Cafe - Cape Town Central

Lise-Mari Gillespie
This is a place to remember and note down when in CPT. Service and hospitality was on point and made the special evening so much better. Food was beautifully presented, good portions and well prepared. Book well in advance to ensure you get a seat at the glass, the scenery is stunning. Didn't take to much food pics, it's a live in the moment and expierence it for yourself.

We really enjoyed the experience and the food was really special. They did ask us for any dietary restrictions, but we did not have any so I am not sure what they offer as alternatives. The servers were all very friendly but I do suggest you ask the servers what is included and what is not as they forgot to ask us if we wanted a glass of champagne. If we were offered it, we would have gladly paid the extra charge to enjoy a glass of bubbles with our tea. Dress lightly as the glass makes the room warm. You can have the blinds brought down but then you cannot take in the views. There was no butter with the scones but instead, there was a melt in your mouth lemon curd. I am not a lemon curd fan, but this I could have eaten with a spoon on its own. The tea I chose was very nice and they normally only offer one tea during the tea but due to you spending a bit of time indulging in delicious treats, you do end up having 2 drinks. The views are amazing and the whole experience is just simply wonderful. I would do it again. There is a nice selection of savoury to sweet and everything about the tea is social media friendly. The ladies bathroom has a chair in it for those extra cheeky Instagram pics. There are so many dining experiences to be had in the Silo Hotel that you cannot just stop at the High Tea. I would recommend spending a few more calendar events in this absolutely stunning venue.

This was truly a remarkable and memorable day! Every bit of attention to detail is appreciated. We particularly adored our waiter, Prince. The live background music was thoroughly enjoyed by all, John Niel certainly adds value to the atmosphere. Amazing food, ambience and overall experience.

Beautiful setting, ideal for special occasions to spoil your partner. Service was exceptional. Food was really good, chilli prawn pasta is definitely a winner. Best beef tartare I have had to date.
Hannah Hudson
Best smoked tuna I've ever had & the service was excellent! Nice view of Lions Head for sunset and the wine list is crazy long too!! Definitely a little pricier but nothing too wild.

We had the Royal Tea experience on a Sunday afternoon and it was lovely. Not only was the tea selection refreshing, the coffees were unexpectedly up to standard. The foodies were perfectly portioned, the only downside for me was the desserts were too sweet and too rich for my liking. The service was exceptional which is a rare find these days! I absolutely adore the windows at the Silo hotel. Will be planning a revisit soon!

Celebrated our 15 years of friendship with my best friend and the staff went beyond expectations to make it a special evening. Beautiful and luxurious experience!

Had a 5-Star experience at the Granary Cafe with my wife on our anniversary. We were very excited about the lunch at this beautiful hotel and were not disappointed. The staff was friendly and comfortable, making us feel right at home! We had a beautiful view of the V&A Waterfront whilst enjoying amazing dishes. The service was top-notch at this breathtaking restaurant. I can highly recommend The Granary Cafe.

Firstly, let's talk about the Silo building itself. It is gritty, industrial, chic and trendy, all rolled into one. If you are interested in design or architecture, do go and check out this space, along with the surrounding environment. All very contemporary! As for the Granary Cafe', informal, yet sophisticated and on trend interiors, with excellent staff to look after you. As for the food, well I would describe it as world class, delicious looking as we as exquisite tasting! Overall, a very relaxed, enjoyable and extremely tasty experience. Would recommend highly!

The Granary Café in The Silo was on our list of places to dine when we visited Cape Town. We booked a few months in advance as we know if can be very popular. The restaurant is located in the historic Silo building, which is far removed from its old grain store days. The building has had a stunning ‘glow-up’ and has been beautifully renovated. You enter the restaurant through the hotel reception, which is magnificent. You speed up several floors in the lift, to then arrive at The Granary Café. We arrived at sunset, and I can safely say, it was one of the best views I’ve ever had from a restaurant – it was incredible. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic views, stretching from Table Mountain to V&A Waterfront and beyond. Once greeted and seated, we chose our bottle of wine, and perused the menu. It was a fantastic menu, with a wide selection of both international and local dishes. Once decided, we sat back and watched the beautiful sunset. The food was sublime. Every course was a taste sensation, but for me, the Springbok was one of the best dishes of our two week visit to South Africa. It was hearty, flavoursome and truly remarkable. I was a bit dubious to experience a Chocolate Brownie with Porcini Mushrooms, but I can say that it does work and it’s delicious. Prince looked after us for the evening, and he was a genuinely incredible host. He was friendly, funny, and utterly charming, and really made us feel like we were the only people in the room. Genuinely I can say it’s some of the best service I’ve ever received. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting and it is the perfect place to enjoy a meal. I would also add that I think it’s very good value for the quality of the entire experience. You simply must visit The Granary Café if you’re looking for an amazing dining experience in Cape Town. It is a truly special place, and we certainly won’t forget our visit.

Had brunch on a Sunday : it was FANTASTIC. From the acoustic concert, to the excellent customer service and absolutely delicious food. I'd give it a 9/10 (-1 point because the bubbles were so so)

The most spectacular brunch you can probably have! Stunning setting, excellent service and fabulous food. Amazing!
Laura Tinkler
Amazing experience. My daughter was gifted a Sunday brunch voucher for two (what a super idea) and chose "moi" (YAY). The venue and decor was fabulous. Even the "restroom". The view, stunning.  We were welcomed with smiles, greetings and a drink. Savoury snacks for starters (smoked salmon was delish and ample) followed by an à la carte main menu (something to suit all tastes and dietary preferences) and a divine desert. Live music - not too loud. Added to the enjoyment. Service was efficient, friendly and above par. The food was on point. Beautifully served and scrumptious. Each and every mouthful. Wonderful treat. Definitely worth a visit. Or more.

Celebrated my wife's birthday at Granary Cafe. Had a great relaxing time. The food was excellent ( Steak Frites and Prawns) and the service was amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a good night out with friends or just with their significant other.

The most gorgeous restaurant with top quality food, drinks and service. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Cape Town and looking for a nice meal.

We had a wonderful experience. From the excellent service, beautiful view and absolutely delicious food and champagne. Our waiter was friendly and informative, and helped us decide which options to choose from. We will definitely be back

This place is amazing, the food is well above average but the service we got was out of this world . Seriously great place and the view and ambience is excellent.

It’s restaurant week in CT so took the opportunity to try new places. The welcome at the Granary, on the 6th floor of the silo was fantastic. We went for lunch on Friday and initially it was quiet but it filled up quickly. Starters included Beef Tataki and Chicken Parfait. For mains we had Springbok Shank and Fish of the day. The shank was tasty but not as rich as classical lamb shank and it needed a touch of salt and pepper. The fish had a curry base and was great. I certainly think this is a place to go for a special meal but try sneak up to the roof top terrace as the views are amazing.

Majestic view of Cape Town waterfront and Table Mountain <br/>Situated at the revamped mills this is a classy establishment/ hotel <br/>Stylishly decorated with objects-de- art <br/>We had the lunch special for R295 for 3 course meal- 1 starter 1 main and a dessert <br/>Starters we superbly plated and delicious <br/>Mains we chose lamb shank and the chicken<br/>All great except one of my guests complained about the chicken - not properly cooked<br/>Desserts were great as was service<br/>A great lunch at that price

From the moment we exited the elevator into the Granary Café at The Silo, we were treated like gold. <br/><br/>Our waiter was attentive and extremely friendly and we were fortunate enough to have been seated right by the window looking out on Signal Hill and a part of Table Mountain. <br/><br/>The Sunday Brunch was excellent and I loved the shared-plate-idea of the main course and dessert. Food was hearty and delicious. <br/><br/>I love all the light coming in from the windows and the well chosen décor. <br/><br/>The table next to us ordered some decadent-looking cocktails so we’ll definitely have to return. <br/><br/>Thank you for a wonderful lunch.

The current rating is not a true reflection of this place. <br/><br/>Had the most amazing experience at the granary cafe. The service was excellent and the food was amazing from starter to dessert was top notch. <br/><br/>Starter: I had the soup of the day which was tomato soup. The soup was smooth and it was a bit spicy but delicious. <br/><br/>Mains: I had the Springbok shank, this was amazing meat falling of the bone. With white carrots and mash. Dish of the day 👌🏽 presentation was good. For wine I, had the spider pig pinot noir which went very well with my springbok shank. <br/><br/>Dessert: I had the orange & ricotta and anything with citrus I love. When I checked the dessert and saw orange I had to had it. Nothing else on the dessert menu matter. The sorbet was my favorite of the dessert it was a bit sour and the fresh food made orange and dried grapefruit was interesting. <br/><br/>Overall experience was great sitting on the 6th floor had the mountain view. Was pretty amazing and the service is so great and the staff so friendly and accommodating. Definitely a must to for a romantic dinner date or just to spoil yourself.

The Silo is one of the most breath-taking new builds in Cape Town. The Granary cafe also has beautiful decor and a lovely atmosphere. The food was good, however I wasn't blown away. It is also pretty pricey. Would still recommend for the experience but I was expecting more.
Lesedi Ramonyane
The service is wonderful and it’s not as expensive as one would expect. Of course the hotel is incredible but the food isn’t particularly anything to write home about to be honest.<br/><br/>I would suggest visiting the bar and the rooftop over dinner instead.

A sumptuous affair....situated on the 6th floor with spectacular views of the city, mountain(s) and harbour. A corporate celebration started with welcome drinks on the rooftop with all staff being attentive to every whim. Once bubbles, cocktails, and various craft beers were consumed, we were suitably relaxed, our hostess led us to a praiseworthy laid table with touches of eclectic decor genius. A prearranged set menu (on personalized menus carrying our business name) that incorporated classic elegance, with contemporary cool. Interpretations of many delicious time-honoured dishes were shared with a personal favorite being the calamari - wow!  Service was exemplary with a manager and two waitrons overseeing everything ran smoothly.  Staff attire is quirky but stylish, uniforms of suit jackets, jeans, white shirts, brown leather shoes. Prior reservations are a must for this venue, our bookings were confirmed and arranged mostly by email, well in advanced with all confirmed by both parties closer to our visit date. Highly recommended for a corporate function or special celebration.

It's so pretty!!!! I really want to score this high tea more, but this is probably the most underwhelming high tea I've attended in terms of eats. <br/><br/>I barely liked any of the offerings: the gluten free salted caramel chocolate slice thing was not nice. The vegan berry cheesecake made with cashew nut was more like a breakfast parfait. The cheese puff pastry was average. The savory Madeline should rather have been kept traditional like the French make them. There was some weird cream, coconut, date concoction - did not like that. The only thing I really liked were the profiteroles and the scones were passable as good. <br/><br/>Do yourself a favour, give this high tea a skip. There are far better high teas in town. The views are incredible. The architecture is stunning. Come here to admire that. Rather sit in the cafe section, order a slice of cake and pot of tea at a fraction of the cost and take in the building in all its wonders. <br/><br/>Shoutout to the hostess, all the waiters and our superb waiter, Shawn. Service is so warm and friendly. <br/><br/>Although, Ian Somerhalder's doppelgänger seated at the reception desk on the 6th floor rather ended off out afternoon in a sour tone. My friend and I wanted to go up to the rooftop for one last drink. He barely looked up to acknowledge us and advised that without a reservation we could not go up. Not even bothering whether or not we could be accommodated in the least. Sigh...

This review is specific to the High Tea offered at The Granary at The Silo. <br/>Let me say at the outset that the kitchen did little wrong, the goodies were excellent, we had a feast and everybody had a different favourite showing that all the options were good! We had cucumber and salmon sandwiches, choc salted caramel cake, macarons, profiteroles, savory madelines, chicken and cheese puffs etc. <br/>The problem with this High Tea and with The Silo in general is the service. After a friendly introduction our waiter was mostly absent and showed no pro activity or intuition as to when he would be needed. I had to get up and call a different waiter (and manager) over on two occasions out of frustration. We had to ask repeatedly for the food, the clotted cream, more jam, hot water, sparkling water... They got the tea order wrong. <br/>Speciality teas is not everyone’s cup of tea! I could not believe that one of our party was unable to order an “ordinary” cup of Ceylon tea. She had to settle for rooibos for which we were charged extra. <br/>The scones were cold, which to me is unforgivable as they should be the highlight of a High Tea. No little spoons were provided for the cream and jam and cheese so we had to all double dip our knives making it messy. <br/>When I booked they asked whether it was a special occasion and I told them it was, I saw a note in their book to this effect too, but that was it. Nothing special was done for us, not even a basic level of service was provided.

**Update 2**<br/>Finally, after much frustration, Luis the General Manager managed to get us a booking at the Granary having read the string of emails that followed before. Thanks for making a plan and allowing me to have dinner and update my review to be more representative of what is possible. <br/><br/>To start off with, we were welcomed by the hostess and swiftly seated at a cozy two seater right next to the amazing geometric windows that frame the city skyline in unique triangles. The windows being one of the main features of this building, look fantastic on the inside giving an openness to the surrounding despite all the steel. The interior is a combination of industrial chic and African art (in a non traditional context). The overall feel is slick and luxurious. I especially loved the copper clad tables with its shades, marks and polish marks taking on a life of their own. With this, the copper toned cutlery, an unexpected luxurious look. Upfront it must be said because this was an annoyance in my previous complaints - there were tables open from the time we sat down to the time we left (we were one of the last guests). So a tighter control on the booking availability can allow for more guests especially given the fuss around my booking in particular. Vouchers (not freebies - legit paid for credit for the establishment), although not given often, should be treated as a live in guest. That out the way as my main gripe let’s move onto the food. <br/><br/>For starters we had the scallops. Perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The avo complimented the flavors of the scallops and citrus kick, a bit overpowering, for the delicate scallops flavor did add a different dimension to the dish. Portion wise - spot on. This was possibly the tastiest scallops starter I have tasted in a fine dining establishment. Well done on that. <br/><br/>Mains saw Candice having the lamb rump and me the seafood biryani. The lamb was tender and the fat rendered nicely. The mini veggies done well and the potato dauphinoise also very tasty. My seafood dish was everything for me. The seafood to rice ratio was in the favor of the seafood for a change and a first for me. Every bite had a perfectly cooked piece of seafood. I loved that the seafood held their own delicate flavours and were completed by the spice in the dish instead of it all tasting one note. Great work. My only complaint is that I couldn’t see the beautiful plating of the dish at this point in the evening due to the very low lighting. I’m a big fan of admiring the chefs work in the plating of a dish and would have appreciated a bit more light to do so. The pictures do not do this dish justice. <br/><br/>Before dessert we had a coffee and tried out their tea. For me the Weekend in Shanghai lacked the flavors described in the flavor profile but maybe it was just prepared a bit on the weak side. Maybe if customers could add their own tea to the pot they could adjust the taste accordingly and add to the experience. The coffee was spot on having the distinct bold flavours the Truth blend of coffees is know for. Not burnt but I do feel the foam quality could be worked on to give that wonderful fine micro foam that sits so well on a good brewed cup of coffee. <br/><br/>Dessert was a miss for me. I had the dulcey cremeux and there was just too much of the same soft mousse textures with a biscuit crumb at the bottom. The passion fruit was extremely tart for me but the ice cream was tasty on this one. Candice enjoyed had the chocolate tart. On the plus side it had a great chocolate flavor and not the traditional cocoa intense kind of favor. This, paired with the caramel/butterscotch creme and tasted good. The nut topping was great and tiny macaroons were perfect. <br/><br/>Service wise our waiter was fantastic, friendly and funny and there when you needed him without thinking. Full of recommendations and with a waiter like that you can’t go wrong. Perfect. I liked that the restaurant manager came to check up on us and made sure even our odd request for virgin cocktails was entertained. For some odd reason we treated like royalty when leaving dinner, handshakes and farewells from staff and managers alike. <br/><br/>Despite the initial booking issues which I assume have now been taken care of for the future, this is a spot well worth visiting. Unique with unparalleled views with fantastic food. <br/><br/>We shall be back for high tea and I will be able to review and give comment on that to. <br/>Candice Nancy (Ryan) Rafael<br/>**Update 1**<br/><br/>After the pathetic service in trying to secure a booking over two weeks go our dear Geraldine says they have entered peak season and can’t help at all because even if they are empty they have to reserve the seating for hotel guests. Wonderful waste of a voucher - can’t wait for next years price increase to make it more worthless than it is. No compromise based on their poor ability to schedule (over 2 weeks of asking) .... 5 Star my ass. <br/><br/>***Initial Review*** <br/>I thought getting a voucher for this place would be something special. I haven’t even sat down and eaten there and I’m annoyed.<br/><br/>Surely when you ask for a booking and they can’t accommodate you the next natural thing to do is offer the customer an alternative date, not a nicely worded email that says we don’t have your dates can’t you pick another ? .... I don’t know Susan ?.... considering the two dates I provided didn’t line up in your reservations book (and neither did the dates I’m the follow up correspondence)... how’s about you suggest a few options instead of making me play 21 guesses ? For a 5 Star place the service seems to be just admin for the customer.<br/><br/>Still waiting for a date, but it seems I will have to go in and ask for their schedule book and do it myself. Bleak. At least the PotluckClub has an online calendar to show availability ... so you don’t have to rely on playing ping pong with Susan. <br/><br/>If I don’t manage to get a date for a booking I’m tempted to ask them to refund the gift. Food should not be this much admin. <br/><br/>*don’t worry Susan was just an arbitrary choice of person’s name... also adds to the dramatic effect.

My experience at the Silo was great. It has been on my to do list for a while so I am glad that I finally got to tick it off. <br/><br/>My rating is mainly based on the awesome view and the experience itself. As for the food, I can not give a well rounded opinion as I only shared a plate of natcho's - but they were pretty tasty indeed.<br/><br/>A top rated spot for a drink with a view!

Went there once with friends for a drink .Probably what am going to write is off topic but they have exquisite bathrooms omg , you could less loose your selfie demon , now going back to the real review ,I didn't have food but I had wine and they served us biltong as snacks and for this reason I absolutely adore this place .<br/><br/>Most restaurant do not serve biltong as a snack as it's expensive , but I respect this place as they actually seem to know that sometimes in Africa we love to snack on dried meat

Really special evening - food & service was excellent! A lot of effort was made to add a personal touch to the birthday celebration & that little extra input from the waiter.

We booked for the royal tea which was a real treat. The views were stunning and the service was great. Everyone at the Granery was very friendly and made us feel very welcome.<br/><br/>The hotel staff on the other hand could definitely use some customer service training. Reception staff were not friendly and neither were the first two people I spoke to regarding my booking. It's quite a pity as one does judge a restaurant on the whole experience and while the restaurant is doing a great job, the hotel staff did put a damper on the day.

The rave in Cape Town, was a bit of an ordinary experience. Plates were very decadently decorated, but that's were it stopped. Had the beef fritters, which was topped with a béarnaise sauce. Was OK, was expecting more.

the service ✔️ the cocktails ✔️ and the views ✔️<br/>This would be the perfect spot to hide away for a little while and chill out by yourself or a couple friends

My colleagues and I knew that we were coming to Cape Town for a conference and an award ceremony a month in advance. We decided to book a table pre-empting that we are going to win, of which we did! Upon booking, we requested the best table in the restaurant...of which I confirmed 3 times at different occasions. <br/><br/>When we got there to our disappointment, our table was given to other people who happen to have booked into the hotel and reserved the table earlier on the day. After mentioning it to our host, he still gave us a table with no view and definitely not the best.<br/><br/>Since we were very upset about the table incident, we really set our expectations very high when it came to the food, as we had compromised on the table but were not going to compromise on the food. <br/><br/>We were first served with wagyu appetizers.. the beauty that we tasted on that spoon!! Thereafter we literally forgot about the table mishaps and had an explosive gastronomic experience. <br/><br/>All of our orders were perfect, having ordered lamb steak, fillet, seafood briyani...no one on the table complained, we were all mesmerized with the epic tastes of each dish. The portions were more than enough which left us stuffed for the night!<br/><br/>The perfect 3 course meal to top an exciting day of winning awards for our organization! I would definitely recommend this place! <br/>

An amazing dining experience with attentive, superb waiters. The view is breathtaking and the food was out of this world. Was introduced to Wagyu as a complimentary starter...and now can't get this dish out of my mind. For mains I had the seafood biryani, it was far from traditional Indian biryani...yet the flavors and spices were all there. Can't wait to bring my husband here.

The Silo Hotel is really beautiful and elegant. When you step into the wood paneled and glass elevator with crystal chandelier you kinda figure you are in for something special.<br/><br/>The Granary Cafe where the high tea is served is simply beautiful with a true upmarket feel but at the same time it is a really comfortable setting. The views are spectacular and adds to the whole ambience of this special hotel.<br/><br/>Service although friendly is not exactly slick and top notch, I really did expect more.<br/><br/>Now to the high tea, for R190 per person this is really worth it. Our cucumber and salmon finger sandwiches was fresh and we'll balanced with the fillings to compliment the main ingredients. The beef pies are sublime with melt in the mouth short pastry, I loved the added Thyme that went well with the beef. Scones served with clotted cream, cheese and preserves was good. The cakes ranged from chocolate mousse cake with ganache, profiteroles with creme patisserie, macaroons, nougat, dessert cups....really a lovely selection but not all exceptional in taste and quality.<br/><br/>I enjoyed my experience at the Granary Cafe and will definitely venture out to them again....perhaps have dinner next time.ū

I had a fantastic date night here with my girlfriend. Food was excellent and not to mention extremely reasonable. Started off with cocktails on the roof followed by steaks with an unmatched view of the city. Very special.

Met up with a friend from Joburg, for breakfast. Initially, we were told they don't take reservations, and should come early to guarantee a space. We arrived and no tables were occupied. We were seated at a lovely window table, and given menus. We both opted for freshly squeezed juice and to eat I chose the Eggs Royale and my friend chose the Poached Eggs. The food arrived promptly, but much to our dismay, the portions were TINY. I don't have the biggest appetite, but even I could recognise that the portion( of the Poached Eggs) was especially small. Although, I must say,my food did taste delicious, but gosh..I could've had two..and this is in reference to the price attached to it as well. I know the establishment is new, and the Hotel is prestigious, but it's definitely something to look into. In terms of the service, our waiter was polite and efficient, but we felt slightly hurried and rushed. It's a beautiful setting, and the atmosphere is upmarket and relaxed, but be prepared to dig deep into your pockets, and get smallish portions of food.

I had the pleasure of enjoying afternoon tea at this spectacular new hotel. Honestly, I was surprised to have gotten a booking on such short notice and was really looking forward to it.<br/><br/>Upon arriving relatively early, I was greeted by the hostess, who kindly offered me a seat at the bar while they were preparing the dining area. I enjoyed a cocktail while admiring the view from the 5th floor of the hotel. Once our table was ready, we were kindly shown to a sort of lounge area were we would comfortably enjoy our afternoon tea.<br/><br/>At the same time as our reservation, there was some sort of event taking place in the main dining area - a business lunch of some sorts. It was a bit noisy at the start, and I wished they would've informed me about this when I booked. Luckily, it didn't go on for too long and by the time our tea arrived, they were wrapping up and getting ready to leave.<br/><br/>The service is somewhat nonexistent. We ordered our tea and had to ask for it 3 times before it eventually arrived, probably a good 20 minutes later. Same when we asked for the bill, but luckily our three tier stand arrived promptly. The pastry chef herself also made an appearance to explain to us what she had prepared for us this particular afternoon. I feel this is a nice touch - I could put a face behind the food, and it makes the experience seem a whole lot more personalized.<br/><br/>My favorites from the stand were definitely the finger sandwiches, which were deliciously fresh. I also thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate domes (rich and moist) as well as the macaroons. I'm not a huge fan of macaroons, but these were delicious - completely homemade, crisp and fresh with a delicious combination of sweet flavors, like a chocolate and caramel filling. I could've finished a whole bag of those!<br/><br/>The scones and mini pies were a bit underwhelming and the other desserts didn't really stand out for me. Overall, for R190 per person, I'd say it was definitely worth while! Maybe not the best high tea I've attended, but I can highly recommend it for a catch up with friends of a romantic afternoon date.

Had the most lovely family breakfast here. The restaurant is situated on the 6th floor of the new Silo hotel, and overlooks the whole of the V&A. <br/><br/>The look & feel is very opulent and maybe even slightly ostentatious, but the food and service quality is remarkable. <br/><br/>I highly recommend ordering the poached eggs, which is served with a beautifully presented combination of avo, halloumi and tomato. It was wholesome and flavourful and definitely the best way to start a Saturday. <br/><br/>Our waitress was down to earth and very friendly, and even took us up to the residents-only rooftop to experience a break taking 360° view of the city. <br/><br/>A very pleasant experience indeed
