Review Gold Restaurant - Cape Town Central

An exceptional experience. From the drum show, to the food, the different presentations and arts display, everything here is a rich display of the diverse African culture and it’s a perfect experience not just for tourists but for locals who want to experience arts & dining all at the same time. They have a full house but somehow they still try to cater for everyone with a good service. Awesome experience! Will definitely be back.

Absolutely loved it! A must do when u visit cape town. Rich and diverse menu and the vibe is awesome! Wish someone told me what to dress to blend in even more. Everyone is very welcoming and they even offer face painting. DO IT

A very crazy and fun experience in which you delve deep into African culture.. The atmosphere is loud, wonderful, and full of life, and you will have the opportunity to participate in beating the drums and tasting foods from African cuisine. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is great An experience I highly recommend.đŸ‘đŸ»

Yes, it is touristy, but there are good and bad kinds of touristy. This is a good one. I had low expectations for food, but all the food was actually quite good and quality. It is food from all of Africa and it's unlimited (you can ask for more of anything). They didn't give me the food menu but I had steak salad, bread and minced chicken dip, chicken wings, Antelope curry, hake and shrimp curry, couscous, another salad, ice cream. The menu constantly changes. Wine list was quite extensive. Small groups of performers come by throughout your meal. Servers were kind. They even had us join them on stage for a bit of dancing which was fun. For 455R, I think it's very reasonable. It's free to reserve online and it may be a good idea, but I did see walk ins as well. Overall, great experience and I recommend it

We went for a corporate dinner and had a very nice experience. We start with drinks and a drumming session. Followed by a set menu with items from around Africa. Each item is cooked to perfection and has a Vegan alternative for the meat/seafood based ones. They serve small portions and if you like a certain item can ask for more. Overall atmosphere is excellent.

What a spectacular place. The show is amazing and the plates of food they serve at the table are excellent. The staff are very attentive and keep the glasses filled and the entertainment going. It's a lovely place to go with a group of people for a special occasion or company event.

Overall, it was a decent experience for me, but not something I'd repeat. Excellent service with kindness from the waitresses. Half of the food was good, the other half was alright. It's a lot of food as you can imagine from the # of courses being served. The whole decor, wardrobe, performance, and entertainment engaging the audience are quite interesting. However, it feels more theatric than authentic. If you are someone who's a traveler not a tourist who's actually keen on local cultures and history, you'll feel that this place is meant for tourists. If I may say, my experience at Waterfront was a lot of authentic, where I interacted with the Indigenous performers and donated money directly. Mojo is also a place to be when you are looking for something more contemporary.

Wow. This night was unforgetabel. Even tho it was very touristy it 100% felt so local. We loved the food and the service. Got to try so many diverse dishes which was incredible. Loved the music and how the guests where involved with the drums. The atmosphere got very special at the end while everyone was dancing and singing together on stage. Highly recommended.

Gold is a must-visit for every foreign tourist in South Africa, offering a delectable feast of 12 authentic African dishes. The beauty lies in the fact that you don't have to choose; everything is brought to your table. Drawing from my hotel industry experience, the service surpassed expectations—treating us like royalty with impeccable attention. Despite the spice level (it wasn’t really hot at all), they took care to cater to my wife's non-spicy preferences. Although we missed the early drumming, it's highly recommended for a fun experience. African entertainment throughout the meal ensures memorable moments—don't forget your camera. Opt for face painting if you want to leave looking African! Exceptional value is evident, attracting both locals and celebratory gatherings. The perfectly portioned food allows for reorders; we noticed a neighboring table returning to the starters, featuring delicious snoek pate, roosterkoek (roasted bread), and a delicate seared ostrich salad. While we left early, there might even be dancing towards the evening's end. Remarkably, they generously share recipes online. A night at Gold is truly unforgettable

Incredible experience, the food was amazing and the people were so full of joy. Loved getting to experience the African table Safari! I went solo and had so many of the staff welcome me & talk to me. Truly a unique experience, don’t leave Cape Town without it! (They also made it gluten and dairy free for me)

Oh boy what can I say? This restaurant strives to give you your money's worth. Great entertainment, ambiance, and delicious cultural food. I will definitely visit again when I'm in Cape Town, SA.

03.12.2019 While on conference one of our team dinners was held at @Gold Restaurant<br/><br/>It's an African themed eatery with amazing decor and prides itself on 4 F's, namely Food, Flavour Family and Friends. I would even add Fun, because on arrival we started off with marimba percussion and djembe drums and then a drumming session which got the evening off to a fun start for all.<br/><br/>The 14 dish tasting menu items are served "buffet" style on the tables to share, which I think was a bit small for the number of people having to share between us. Especially since some of the food was not to everyone's liking, and wished we had more of certain dishes.<br/><br/>The ones that stood out for me were:<br/>‱SOUTH AFRICAN SEARED OSTRICH FILLET SALAD<br/>Marinated Ostrich fillet is combined with summer greens for a delicious start to our African Feast<br/><br/>‱TUNISIAN PRAWN BRIOUAT<br/>Briouats translates into “little Parcels” and are enjoyed all over North Africa and can be filled with savoury or sweet fillings<br/><br/>‱MOZAMBIQUAN CHILI CHICKEN WINGS<br/>This Mozambiquan specialty honours Portuguese seafarers who sailed around the African continent during the 16th century searching for gold, precious stones, ivory, amber and spices. Enjoy with the Ethiopian IAB to calm the fire<br/><br/>‱SOUTH AFRICAN LAMB AND SPRINGBOK SAMOOSAS<br/><br/>Variations of these crisp pastries can be found throughout the Middle East and Northern African countries, including South Africa. We fill ours with minced organic lamb and springbok<br/><br/>‱TANZANIAN FISH CURRY<br/>With fresh water lakes on its Western and Northern borders, and Indian ocean to the East, Tanzania has an abundant selection of fish dishes. This one is delicately flavoured with coconut milk and fresh spinach<br/><br/>Dessert was only a choice of Ice Cream or Pumpkin fritters (which needed more flavour)<br/><br/>To end off the evening all the staff joined in on a singing and dancing stint to say farewell. Service was good and all the staff really seem to enjoy themselves and being there, which shows 😁<br/><br/>It's a lovely restaurant, and has a great vibe. The food was good, and something different, but some were still hungry.<br/><br/>#TheFoodMusketeer<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerEats<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerDrinks<br/>#TFMGoldRestaurant

I really enjoyed my experience to be honest.<br/><br/>Food was great. Flavor very exotic. Good music. Good conversation and good wine makes me a happy girl. I definitely recommend this place

Recently went there for a staff dinner and lemme just say this place is LIT! The food is sooooo yummy. The drinks were poppiby and the staff was amazing. Highly reconsidering having my 25th birthday dinner here. Love love love it
FoodOnMyMind
Well the 3 stars are for the sheer experience<br/>Its loud ,jazzy and colorful<br/>The drum beats as you play along ,the drummers are pretty good<br/>The dancers ,puppets painters, the waiters everyone's part of the groove<br/>The food is across Africa but nothing stands out in particular<br/>The springbok meat is tender mildly spicy and quite tender<br/>The cous cous salad ,chicken salad ,fish curry ,green leafy salad ,tomato soup ,the desserts are all just ok ,nothing stands out in particular<br/>Go here not for the food ,but to soak in the experience

What an experience! Picturesque decor & cultural themed restaurant worth visiting if you are not from africa. Astonishing live performances. Menu is already set; 14 different dishes from various region in the continent, which is an absolute culinary treat served by waitresses in colorful dresses. Will definitely recommend this place for those looking for all-rounder african experience.

GOLD was an incredible, fun and unique experience. We went there as part of a work function and I loved every moment of it. From the drumming in the beginning, to the entertainment, food, dancers, etc all through the night, it was such an experience! The dishes were delicious and I enjoyed learning about the origin of each dish (each from a different place in Africa). As South Africans, we often don't get to experience an authentic African culture, as it's often watered down, especially in Cape Town. Will definitely come back again and bring all my friends!

My boss was in town for the week and requested that we do a team building dinner. Instantly knew that this was the place to go to, because it combines activities with shows while having an African dining experience. <br/><br/>We started off with a 30 min drum lesson. Sooo much fun. Then all throughout the evening we were entertained by singing, dancing and drumming. It’s so cool that the performers interact with the diners and include them into their performances! <br/><br/>The food is not the greatest - but it’s not meant to be fine dining, rather causal street food and ‘homely’ dishes originating from multiple countries across Africa. <br/><br/>It’s super touristy, but definitely worth checking out!

Went to Gold restaurant friday and I had the best time , the ambiance, vibe and food was fantastic. The summer menu - 14 course supper was a delight to my tastebuds. It is a filling menu - so I would suggest drinking water as there is so much different tastes you need a breather between each course. The performers & the interactive drumming shows off Africa in a positive way and the interaction with diners makes Gold one of the most entertaining suppers I have ever had
Neil Smith
This is a very authentic restaurant set in an awesome location within an old building. The African vibe is a bit touristy but still very cool. The food is bits and pieces from all over Africa which makes it interesting. There is a fun atmosphere with interactive singing and dancing although I must admit at one point the performance did get a bit much for me but I still had loads of fun.

Africa is known to have a very rich cultural background and a continent where cultural diversity are embodied in food and culture. <br/><br/>A vibrant place that captures the style and essence of Africa. It feels like I have stumbled upon gold! From the moment you walk in the door of Gold, this aged brick warehouse with colourful, traditional African décor sweeps you away for a once-in-lifetime experience. <br/><br/>The entertainment at Gold is nearly a bigger part of the experience than the food. During our meal you are entertained by a tall Mali puppet with singers and dancers ready to captivate you with traditional African performances. <br/><br/>Their 14-course set menu takes you on a taste safari with cuisines from all over Africa. The evening begins by a hand washing ceremony and then the feast commences. We started off our taste safari with a South African Spicy Tomato soup accompanied with Roosterkoek (bread prepared over the coals). So flavourful and fragrant with spice. The Cape smoked fish pate was delicious and enjoyed on the Roosterkoek. <br/><br/>Our taste safari took us on a journey to Kenya, Algeria, Ethiopia & Tunisia. From the Kenyan Irio Patties made from maize meal and morogo (leafy greens) to the Tunisian Briouats (pastry parcels filled with cashew nuts and ginger), every dish was delicious. The Algerian Kofta Kebabs was flavoursome and the Ethiopian lab made from cured cheese, herbs and garlic added as a refreshing dip to the Koftas. <br/><br/>Our taste safari took us further on a sensory discovery of several sharing main dishes from across Africa. The mains included a delicious Namibian Venison (Springbok), a fragrant Cape Malay Chicken Curry, Moroccan Sweet Potato and Butternut Tagine, traditional Nigerian Corn and Beans and my favourite the Cameroon Mchicha (spinach with added coconut and ground nuts). No African dish is complete with traditional African creamy pap to marry all the authentic flavours of Africa. <br/><br/>We ended our taste safari with a sweet sago and vermicelli warm dessert (Cape Malay Boeber) served with a dusting of gold dust. <br/><br/>A great night filled with fun, laughter, African rhythms and delicious African cuisine. A great way to explore the charm and the cuisines our own continent has to offer. Definitely worth a pot of gold!

Went here for an office teambuilding event which was started off with a very exciting and exuberant drumming lesson. A great laugh was had and we worked up a proper appetite in anticipation of our continental meal. The food was simply superb from start to finish, and the attention to detail and service was fantastic. I'm not one for snoek pate but I've certainly been converted thanks to the zesty zing from Gold Restaurant's version. Another personal favourite was their mchicha - spinach cooked with peanuts, giving this veggie staple a decidedly unique flavor and one that I couldn't get enough of! There were three birthdays in our department this month and the performers made us feel very special by bringing over cake, singing happy birthday to us, and having us dance with them. I highly recommend this place and would definitely go back.

Being an Australian I'm always drawn to the idea of what is African food. Is it something I've never seen or tasted before. Is it some strange ingredient only found in that area. Gold Resturant takes me on that journey of not just food but of culture around Africa. <br/><br/>The Resturant is a lovely location where modern meets earthy tones. There are several dining levels, so it's not a big dining hall but a place where you can sit, enjoy the meal and the show. <br/><br/>The meal is a 14 dish tasting menu cover starters of soup, then selection on dished from around Africa and finishing up with a lovely dessert. <br/><br/>Between each of the courses, we were treated to singing and dancing from a group of entertainers who sang and danced with such passion. <br/><br/>I couldn't fault the service nor the food. We were there to celebrate and I bought along a couple of bottles of wine, one which was a bottle of bubbly and our waiter didn't need to be asked to bring the champagne glass, it just arrived at our table. It was those little things that made the night. <br/><br/>The meal is reasonable priced and the corkage is at R40 per bottle. <br/><br/>If you want a great African experience then Gold is the place to go.

Gold captures the diversity of tribal and ethnic cuisine from all over Africa in a unique and energising way by presenting the food in a celebration of song, dance and drums. <br/><br/>We were warmly welcomed by beautifully dressed hosts in traditional costume of brightly coloured fabrics. Before the meal begins, our hands were washed table side and the menu was explained. @<br/><br/>A set menu is offered and dishes are brought to the table in portions to share. Every dish is explained and presented with reverence. There are 14 dishes with vegetarian options available. <br/><br/>The South African spicy tomato soup & roostekoek were delicious and a suoerb start to the meal. The snoek pate was light & creamy - the best I've ever tasted. The Ethiopian lab made from cured cheese, fresh herbs & garlic was a perfect accompaniment to the lamb & ostrich kofta kebabs. I loved the Tunisian briouats filed with cashews & ginger. A Namibian venison pot (Springbok), Cape Malay chicken curry (fragrant spices & coconut milk) were served with creamy maize meal pap. All mouthwatering & exquisite. The Moroccan sweet potato & butternut tagine was melt-in-the-mouth tasty yet the West African spinach (morog) with coconut & ground nuts awakened my senses like no other! The outstanding meal culminating in Boeber, a sweet sago & vermicelli dessert served with a dusting of gold powder.<br/><br/>What an incredible event the night was! Truly an excellent representation of African cuisine. Put it on your bucket list now! <br/><br/>Sharese Hunt Glen Hunt Capetowngirl

Lived in Cape Town for many years & this is my 1st visit to Gold. Took 20 friends from Australia. What an incredible experience from start to finish. Highly recommend for locals & tourists alike. Great food. Plenty of it and superb variety. Fantastic entertainment. Stunning decor, well laid out & very spacious.

The best part of discovering any country in my opinion is to sample the local cuisine. Oh what delightful sensation as your palate comes close to all kinds of new flavours. Oh the exhilarating joy to find the vegetable you know so well back home cooked totally differently. And the best part is that it tastes even more delicious! Today, I share such an experience with you. Come along with me to discover more about the diversity of the African continent. Its cuisine is a pure reflection of the rich diversity of the various tribes, ethnic and social groups. With a balanced portion of meat, whole grains, beans, spices, fruits and vegetables, this was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten so far. (I know I say that a lot, after all when you’re a foodie, you tend to love very good food a lot!)

I was amazed at the superior quality food - we got to try dishes from different African countries and was a real "African" experience! A superb evening and unforgettable experience! We had a set menu consisting of biltong salad, potato balls, chicken wings, rice dishes, cape malay seafood curry, chicken in lemon sauce and a beautiful nutty dessert cake gluten free! I ordered the Amarula cocktail with cinnamon and ...erm something else! Too good to remember!

We have been here on valentines day and had a great evening! First we did the drumming class which we thought might be stupid but was actually quite fun. The food was great, a big variety and also the service was fantastic. Would always come again!
Celeste Tsang
Great experience of the African culture with foods from 14 different African countries at a set price. 14 course meal leaves you feeling stuffed. Great entertainment with singing and dancing at each level of the restaurant whilst you enjoy your food.
Paul Spagnoletti
Fantastic African cultural experience. Must for any tourist and for that matter any South African. Food and service was also great and well priced. Big thumbs up.

Wonderfully unique experience with dancing and drumming involved. I was asked to join 2 other ladies in dancing and thoroughly enjoyed it! Food was different and service outstanding.

I am extremely happy I got the opportunity to discover this absolute gem of a place during a #ZomatoMeetup! Gold restaurant is magical and in my opinion offers the best of African cuisine. As someone from a tropical island living in South Africa, it was great to sample the 14-course menu and discover tastes from various African countries. I did not know I would love African cuisine before that day. For me, I had no idea African food could taste so delicious and be healthy too. With a lot of whole grains and beans (lovely Ethiopian lentil dhal, etc) and vegetables. They also are halaal-friendly so no pork. And they don't cook with alcohol either which was perfect for me who doesn't drink alcohol for health reasons. Great to bring a large group, family and even international visitors/business partners or delegates.
Alex Spero
Definitely worth trying if you're keen to experience an African evening out. Their menu includes traditional dishes from South Africa along with other countries throughout the continent. They also cycle their menu every now and then so if you return you'll get to experience new dishes. <br/><br/>Go in a group with energy and an open mind. The djembe drumming lessons and the live performance during dinner are not to be missed. Bookings are essential!

Was part of the murder-mystery dinner hosted at GOLD. Was so excited to finally experience this high rated restaurant, what an absolute disappointment! Food was below average, highly priced for a very deceiving menu. Not enough food for a woman let alone the five guys at our table. No one at our table could hear one another and not even to mention our miserable waiter. Maybe they can fool tourists that this is African dining, but as a local surely never again!
Dominique Andrea Vieira
I could start this review off with a pun, like I would give them a "Gold" medal if I could - oh wait, I just did. Never mind, I would. <br/><br/>I'll be honest, there is something about going for an African meal, that immediately makes me cringe and go 'naah', kind of like whenever SA makes a spin off of an international reality show. BUT Gold honestly blew me away at our #ZomatoMeetup. <br/><br/>We started the evening off with some drumming, which I haven't done since junior school. We were whisked back to our table and the African feast began. They served us dishes from all over Africa, and they were completely delicious. You would think that 16 courses would be a challenge, but they are well thought out and contain a good dose of lighter, veg options. Some standouts for me were the tomato soup (I would have eaten the whole bowl if they had allowed it), the peanut chicken and the vermicelli dessert (like rice pudding but BETTER). <br/><br/>Between each course you are treated to a live song and dance performance, which is honestly completely outstanding. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gold for anyone visiting Cape Town from overseas, as well as for any locals who just feel like something different. Ignore that little voice in your head and give it a try - it's so worth it.
Jenny Sarah Coulson
You don't get dinner at Gold. You get a full-on, 360-degree African experience, and it's awesome. We started off the night with a traditional drumming lesson, which got the blood pumping and palms tingling. There's no better way to work up an appetite, and you need one for the 14-course feast that awaits. Out of the millions of things we tried, a few stand out for me - the bobotie (YUM), masala bread with a lentil spread (perfection), tomato soup (I want to eat that every day), peanut chicken (my favourite dish of the night), and vermicilli dessert (milky and delicious). I really couldn't fault a single item and at the end of the meal I was satisfied, not stuffed - because the portions were small and the dishes were light. <br/><br/>The best part? Between each course, the waiters and waitresses burst into song and dance, and they dragged a few unsuspecting guests up "on stage" as well. (Yes, I was one of them). We drank Rickety Bridge white and Foundation Stone red, as well as champagne with a sprinkle of gold leaf. In fact, we were dusted with gold powder at some point during the night as well, while the women sang. (I'm still shaking gold out of my hair. Not the worst problem in the world.) <br/><br/>You know it's a good night when you only crawl home at 12pm, and I'd recommend the Gold experience to anyone - tourist or South African!
Megan Bellinger
Wow! Gold really knows how to showcase African cuisine (and arts), I was mighty impressed - it's entertaining, but not too clichéd (or just the right amount :) )<br/>We were treated to a 14 course meal, which followed a drumming session where you can let your inner muso come out.<br/>Everything from the starting course of tomato soup to the closer of a rice pudding-type dessert were incredible. Thank you Gold!
Georgie Lockwood
Every carat (and carrots were served) worth its weight in Gold! A great experience for tourists but strangely enough the South Africans seemed to enjoy it the most and it's not unaffordable either.<br/>The entertainment was fantastic with rhythm and energy - the performers seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves which is important when engaging with culture shocked tourists. There was no space for xenophobia on the menu as it was a melting pot of African food and cultures. The tomato soup was delicious and served in tin cups along with the sago-like pudding. I absolutely loved the chicken dish! Could have munched on that all night! All that glistens is not good but is not the case with the champaign... A delicate gold leaf added a glittering touch to the feel of the night - they really do treat their guests like GOLD.<br/>
Rebecca Francis-Pope
Our evening began with a fun, interactive laughter-inducing drumming experience, led by two very entertaining gentlemen. There was so much delicious food on offer, but my favourites included the perfectly spiced tomato soup, the coriander chickpea dip (could be eaten on its own by the spoonful!) and the bobotie which was deliciously seasoned with a chutney side that added the ideal amount of sweetness. Throughout the evening there were traditional African dancers displaying their talents and getting the diners involved. An incredibly fun evening! Highly recommend Gold Restaurant!
Ricki Allemann
Africa is awesome. This place is awesome. The vibe is just too great, so much song and dance. You're welcomed by lovely ladies dressed in traditional African dress, start off with an awesome djembe drum class with the resident drummers all over Africa. The 40 odd staff are from all around Africa, each with a unique story.<br/>The menu is a set menu with traditionally prepared food from all over Africa. If you have family or friends from out of SA you need to bring there here. Moyo ain't shit compared to Gold. It makes me proud to be an African, not that I'm not proud already. This is just too great. Staff are clued up, keep you informed in every dish and they make sure your glass is always full.
Warren Bernard
I highly recommend visiting these guys for an authentic African dining experience. Each course of our meal was delicious and the drumming event that we took part in completed the experience for us.
Cape Town Foodies
I love a restaurant for a special occasion and Gold is very much that type of venue. It's an African themed restaurant and decor and the different levels to the restaurant adds to its charm.  Drumming to start the evening really adds to the experience and throughout the dinner, the staff come around doing traditional African singing and dancing.  The menu is extremely tasty and covers cuisine from several African nations and no one leaves with an empty stomach!  Well worth the experience, try go with a bunch of friends to add to the occasion of it :)

What a fantastic initiation into African cuisine. When I visited the restaurant in Capetown, it was the very first time I was eating any African food and I have to say I completely enjoyed my self. They have an adorable shop selling African trinkets which is a great way to start or end your time at the restaurant. We had a set menu which includes over 10 different types of dish along with local wines - all delicious. My favourite being the Bobotie. The meal is an experience as they have live entertainment with singers and dancers and it really puts you in the mood. It makes you just want to get up and dance or sing along with them. I have a feeling this is targeted towards tourists but even if you're a local I think it is a fabulous way to enjoy a meal out with your friends!<br/><br/>ps - While Africa is a meat loving continent the restaurant has some wonderful vegetarian options as well you just have to ask them.
Teresa Ulyate
Visiting Gold is an experience - so much more than just a meal! The evening started with a fun, interactive drumming session to help work up our appetites - which we needed for the 14 course set meal! The service staff were very friendly and attentive, and it was great to be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the many dishes that were brought to our table. We tasted food from all over the continent, all of which I enjoyed. (I loved the colourful serving dishes too.) There was entertainment throughout the evening with singing and dancing right next to our tables. The venue itself is divided into various levels and beautifully decorated. I enjoyed every minute of the evening and can't wait to go back!
Tami Magnin
Just had a lovely evening at this restaurant. It is almost Madame Zingara like in experience in the sense that your senses are tantalized with puppet theatre, singing and dancing while you dine on foods from all over the African continent. It was disappointing to see that 90% of our fellow diners were tourists, not because I begrudge it to them but locals make plans to travel all over the world before sampling dishes from our own diverse continent. Each of the 14 dishes presented to the table were well thought out and plated in a unique way. As the restaurant is split across numerous levels, it could be filled to capacity without it ever feeling crowded. This is something every South African should experience for themselves and I will be back soon to share it with my family.

I was very impressed by Gold. The food is intricate and delicious and the service is superb. I enjoyed the unusual venue layout over multiple floor levels - and the performers were leveraged this well.

Attended a work function here and was quite impressed when walking through the doors, they seemed to have now combined Gold and Trinity to work together great food and snacks at the one and awesome party next door after supper! <br/><br/>There is not too much for me to say about this place as I was there for a work dooo but I had a wonderful evening, great food, great entertainment LOVED the DĂ©cor and always had service with a smile. <br/><br/>I'll be heading back that way but this time for a dinner out with my man or a fun night out with friends... As I'd like to experience Gold in a more personal atmosphere.
