The most authentic British pub in South Africa. Have loved it for years and revisit yesterday was awesome. The Sunday lunch is legendary, just like Mom makes it. Menu is dinner. Answer is yes please. Result is awesome.
Great staff, good pub menu and friendly atmosphere.
Great value for money. Love the Sunday Roast. Very good and friendly service.
A great little English pub! Perfect for some good food, good service, some rugby or football.. and some drinks! 😉 Their menu is SUPER basic! Which is also not the end of the world.. because it still contains some decent items on it! Breakfast was a very a basic eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes and toast! Not bad at all!
I wouldn't say it's the best place to come to if you're keen on trying some different foods etc, but it's great to get a bunch of mates together and go there to just chill!
Quiet English pub, perfect to watch a game on one of the TV screens.
Service is excellent - food is really good. I had the liver, bacon and onions on mash ... sooo yum. Hein had Pork bangers with mash and veg. Real good pub food.
Good old fashioned British pub, friendly atmosphere and staff. Standard honest pub grub good value for money. A nice pub if you want to meet friends for a few beers and chat. It does not have noise levels of the more trendy pubs so can hold conversation. Seems to be frequented by the same regulars. Try the Scots pie with chips, veg and gravy or the Sunday lunch carvery which you will need to book for.
A typical pub meal is what you get at the Old Rose - great ! Got to try their Sunday Lunch if you can get in - booking is essential. Booking also essential for Rugby Football and Cricket - tables can be booked.
Not very nice comments from quite a few people. If you were expecting a world class setting, food sprinkled with caviar, frothing cappuccinos and sober customers you really should have gone somewhere else! But if you are looking for a solid pub, cold beer, good food and decent humans as company (haha) this is the perfect spot for it. All these stories of people smoking everywhere and being harassed by other patrons are rubbish! If you don't like it you don't have to come back. Actually if you don't like it DONT COME BACK, you'll just ruin it for the rest of us.
Went to this pub on three separate occasions whilst on holiday in South Africa recently. This pub was recommended to us by friends in the UK, as the only British pub in S.A.
Really enjoyed the food, drink, atmosphere and friendliness of the place. Got to meet the the landlord and landlady who were extremely welcoming and 100 % British ( even still had their accents after 30 odd yrs of being expats!)
Would recommend this pub, not only internationally but also to the locals who know the meaning of " one in the wood" !
( must also say that I have read the other 2 reviews before posting this, and, we never experienced any of what has been said - do believe its the wrong "old rose" they are referring to! )
