Review Tajine Moroccan Restaurant - Benoni

“The Gem of the East” - authentic Moroccan food prepared by in-house chefs ..Yvonne the owner is hands on and her style and determination is admirable The food is served with pride by Jesse who has product knowledge and is very well groomed. The atmosphere is that of warmth and carries you to a place in the secret nooks of Morocco - that only a few know about - The delicious smells of chefs cooking permeates the dining room. Carefully chosen music with a combined genre of Gypsy Jazz , French cafe and Andalusian makes for easy conversation as it’s just gentle enough to encourage chats with loved ones and friends It’s definitely a place to have a more exclusive dinner with those you love

Amazing food selection. The flavors were nothing like anything we have had before. Everything was made fresh. They were also able to work around my gluten sensitivity. The interior was elegantly decorated with tons of antique / retro items from around the world. Ask for the waiter Christian, he was a wonderful host.

The amount of flavours in a single dish is quite intense. Some may enjoy it but for me it was just a tad too much for me to handle. Still delicious nontheless. If going with a group get the platters for however many are there. Lots of food on offer. Milkshakes are proper thick.

When looking at the food when it arrived to our table I regressed not getting a tajine because it looked delicious. Thankfully I had an amazing prawn pasta which took away all my regrets. I wanted to finish the whole plate but my boyfriend didn’t come with me and I needed him to taste it, so I got a little bit as a take away. On the way home I had to stop myself from eating it because it was so tasty. He ended up loving it too.

My first Moroccan Food Experience - and on any standard it was amazing! Aromatic with just the right amount of spice. Beautiful place and exceptionally polite staff. Thanks for an amazing experience.

look guys I me and my fiancé like this place for sure as the food is tasty and very delicious but we would really like more privacy in the garden area --- please cover the metal fence with material or something like a plant -- we don't want to sit outside and everyone can see us from the street . the waiters are very well dressed and know how to treat us with respect . we looooooove this place very much and can't wait to return for the lamb shank !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Set in a beautifully decorated home in western extension, this restaurant is an unusual find. The food gives a taste of Morocco - ras el hanout, cumin, rose and other exotic spices add distinctive flavour to a selection of dishes. The lamb shank is tender and delicious. Staff are attentive and very friendly and the interior of the restaurant is extremely comfortable. An unusual restaurant in an unlikely location.

Great food, fantastic atmosphere, really friendly and pleasant staff. Wish there were more restaurants who looked after their customers and served delicious foods and desserts like this.

Probably the best dining experience I have ever had. Unmatched hospitality and certainly a place to spend a day and unwind. The food is delicious and the atmosphere relaxed and refreshing.

Great personal experience sitting on cushions on the floor and eating spicing Moroccan food from a tajine. Keep a look out for the Sunday markets. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Quite possibly the best place I have ever eaten. The food is out of this world and the atmosphere is wonderfully set. My favourite place to eat at.

This is an interesting little spot hidden away in Benoni. They’ve tried to get an authentic Moroccan vibe going with elaborate decor inside an old house. Our waitress was lovely and the service was quite quick.

The Halloumi starter we ordered had interesting flavours but unfortunately it was rubbery. It came with a nice little side salad and dressing though.

For mains I ordered the Lamb Shank as it seemed like quite a popular dish. The meat was super tender and just fell off the bone. However the flavour was a bit lacking and I thought it let down the fact that it was cooked so perfectly. The veggies on the side however were delicious and the potatoes were really yummy. My boyfriend had the the Beef and Tomato Tajine which was quite tasty.

Definitely a different experience as we don’t have many Moroccan restaurants around Joburg. It was worth the trip to try something different and I would love to go back sometime to try their tasty sounding starter platters and their other tajines.

Had a quiet lunch with them on a whim to try Moraccan food and we weren't disappointed.

The portions were huge - filling and delicious, the atmosphere was relaxing, though we were told by the manager that at night is when they're busiest where they have belly dancing to entertain guests.

Though I was pretty stuffed after my meal, my boyfriend and I shared dessert which was tangy, refreshing and the perfect way to end a meal.

Good food Pre booked for 18h00 and got there at 18h01
Waiters --- where are they ????
Greeted at the door by a kitchen staff member with a net on her head and she took our orders with the net still on her head . Poured my own wine , also opened the bottle myself . Was informed that our waiter would be late Waiter popped around once to to say he was sorry for being late and only saw him again in passing to drop off our meals and then we had to ask him to remove our dinner plates
Half the plates left behind
Up until 20 min before we left --- we were the only 2 people in the restaurant for a long time , 2 people arrived and waiter took them a candle for their table and huffed around them ( no candle for us ) what would happen if we were choking
We have been going to this fine dining restaurant for years - family functions etc --- not happy to return again
One of the good Mediterranean places to dine at if you are looking for something different. The food is great and the staff are very welcoming. The food does take time but what do you expect from a little restaurant in Benoni.

Amazing food and wineand impressive decor. Great family run restaurant. The young man who waited the tables was very friendly and helpful. Definitely a must.

The place is just alright. Appearance wise,I expected more to be honest. The entire vibe however is very relaxed and the food is yummy. I didn't have much since my partner is Muslim and the place isn't Halal certified. I'd recommend Tajine for lazy Saturday lunch with a group of mates. Great for outdoor lounging

A fantastic Moroccan setting and experience! The food is sublime and the experience is otherworldly! Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for something different.

We had a late lunch here over the past long weekend. We were warmly greeted by Dylan, the manager, who looked after us for the entire time we were there. His recommendation of the Mukabalatt as a starter was spot on. I love the idea of trying lots of small things and everything on the plate was divine. Hubby had the Koutbaan (lamb kefta kebabs) which he really enjoyed. For mains I had a vegetarian tagine and he had the olive and lemon chicken. The food was amazing, and the portions generous. I love the decor of the restaurant, especially outside in the garden where you feel you have been transported directly to Morocco. Service was excellent. I look forward to coming back here for breakfast.

This is definitely a hidden little gem!! The atmosphere is super relaxed and they make a good effort to give you the Moroccan feeling!!
The service is slower but gives you time to relax and have a super feast meal!!
The food is sublime and the flavors are brilliant!!!!! If you haven't been you need to go!!

This is a very sweet restaurant, decor is great and the food was fab... Their vegetable tagine was a really tasty vegan option... The service was good too...

What a winner! We came here for a mid-week lunch and were the only ones in the restaurant. What an absolute hidden gem!! The place is gorgeous inside with all the little touches to make you feel like you are in a Moroccan restaurant. We went all 'authentic' and sat on the floor at the low table and had a wonderful time. The food was absolutely delicious, portions were huge and flavours wonderful. You have to try this unsuspecting Benoni gem!

Really lovely garden and indoor areas where you can sit on the floor in authentic Morocco style. The food is absolutely delicious with exotic spices and flavours.
Not to be missed.

My friends and I met for lunch here one afternoon. As lemongrass was still under reconstruction due to the fire they had. As a result we didn't really order the Moroccon food we ended up chosing a few items from their lemongrass menus which went down well as they are "sister" restaurants.

The decor inside here however is very colourful and vibe and a lovely spot to meet and catch up with friends. You can also sit outside if you want. I know on Fridays or weekends they also use to have belly dancing to entertain you and they are well known for their lamb shanks.

My wife and I wanted a different experience, and we found it. An early 20th century house converted into a Moroccan restaurant. It was raining when we arrived so we sat inside. A beautifully decorated moroccan feel, low lit and romantic evening. The food was exquisite, if you are looking for different flavored and lovely aromas. We went for a set menu, where you get to sample some of the moroccan tastes. The chili is really hot, so be aware, by the way chili is one of the side dishes, so the general food is not hot. The food is very spicy and extremely tasty. My only negative was the service. No-one was at the door to welcome us, we had to find the manager who gave is a warm welcome and took is to our seats. The waitress we got was brand new, so she didn't know much of what she was serving, but the manager was extremely helpful and we felt right at home.
We are definitely coming back to try the lamb shank and prawn pasta.

Such a treat in the quaint and cosy Moroccan theme, complete with comfy cushioned seating should you wish to have a more authentic experience.
The service was entertaining and engaging despite their inexperience, ably assisted with a personal touch by the owner.
We began with the Mukabalat, which was a delicious way to sample traditional flavours. On the owner's recommendation we ordered the slow roasted Mechoui - the lamb shank - and the chicken B'stilla.
The chicken was oversold, but delicious nonetheless.. not quite getting the promised honey flavour. The lamb shank was outstanding! Fragrant and full of spicy Moroccan magic. This is an absolute treat that is well worth the long trip to a charming little bit of urban restaurant heaven. Thank you for a lovely evening.

To be honest I don't know anything about Moroccan food, but my thoughts of this place were great- food was good (nice presentation as well) , service was superb & the setting outside was perfect. Queuing a date here would be ideal

Interesting little gem. It's atmosphere and food is strictly dedicated to giving you the full Moroccan dining experience. 👌 Me, not being very adventurous had the prawn pasta in a secret sauce, very tangy. Set menus are to try and pick and choose.

Very creative space with loads if stuff to choose from. I have been there twice. The food is worth the experience.... But for what u get, its a little in the expensive side. Really enjoyed the food presentation and the service was, as per usual, perfect. Waiter was accommodating and clearly interested in making us feel respected. It's a must try restaurant, for sure.

5 April 2018. We have been dying to come back to Tajine for almost two years. Finely we have come for dinner and we are not dicipointed. This is the place to go to for that somthing different and special.

August 2015
Felt like exploring a bit. You know. Somthing different. Found this gem. Wow. I had such a good time with my fiancé. Tajine has left my tastings teased. We had the set menu A. It was a combination of flavours exploding not only in our mouths but in our minds. The atmosphere is so relaxing. We were sitting in the cushion lounge. The waitress that served us was brilliant and also educated us on the different dishes. I left this place inspired and ready to try Moroccan again.

Ended up here after trying to get into the Lemongrass restaurant. Decor eclectic, food excellent. The lamb Tagine was very tasty and tender.
Food is really good, the beef and tomato tagine is amazing. Service was good and they were even open considering the area had a power failure

What a nice experience. The food was delicious. Wonderfully quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The staff was great, took their time to show us the entire space and allowing us to choose a cozy spot to sit.

I found this restaurant on Zomato by kinda accident. It seemed a bit out on the fringe but I felt like something unusual & different to eat. The area surrounding the restaurant is a bit Hmmmm & scary but the trees & the running water in the water feature in the courtyard & the quite street is very pleasant & peaceful.
There is limited parking in the property.
The hostess was friendly & showed us around before we finally settled on having lunch here. The decor is heavy Moroccan with curtains, cushions & carpets spread out everywhere. We opted for a table inside & the pram was no trouble at all. The seating is a little individualised & feels cosy & welcoming.
The waitress was friendly, helpful & patient. She added to the experience. After a peanut butter milkshake & fruit whip we were ready to explore the menu. Oh boy where to start. There are such interesting options & choices.
We decided on a starter platter for 2. Mukabalatt. It was delicious. So, so, yummy. Six options in little bowls with fantastic pita bread. We swept the bowls clean. We just had to keep asking for more pita bread because the 2 they gave us was way too little, at a cost of course.
Then our mains: freshly prepared while you wait, creamy chermoula prawn pasta & pomegranate lamb.
The prawns were insanely delicious. The spices, the cream, the flavour & the taste was ridiculous. Wow what a dish.
My wife had the lamb & gave it a 10 out of 5.

Don't be mistaken, this is no 5 star Joburg north restaurant but it holds its food right there with the best. I loved my meal!!

Lamb and pomegranate absolutely stunning.

I can't possibly rate Tajine highly enough. Their personal, quirky atmosphere and friendly service are refreshing, you'll feel at home and like you're exploring something new at the same time.

Then there's the food, oh my word the food! The selection is small, but each item is magical. First timers may want to try the Tajine Feast to get a range of tastes. Alternatively, the Pomegranate Lamb with couscous is simply the finest comfort meal I have ever eaten at a restaurant. It is complemented nicely by the Marrakesh salad and Rose Tea.

Sister restaurant Lemongrass may be the better known of the two, but Tajine is the real hidden gem of the East.
