Review Erawan Thai Restaurant And Bar - Wynberg

Wow! What great food! Service was flawless, except for the fact that the wine I wanted was out of stock. We were the last to leave the restaurant, and all the staff waited patiently until we had left the building before departing for home. A place I will most definitely return to.

Came back to Erawan having not been here for maybe a year now. Elegant dining area with tables that are well spaced so you dont feel crowded or too close for comfort. A quiet dinner for two with my gorgeous girlfriend and culinary critic. Decided to have the dim sum dumplings for starters, choosing the two prawn dishes, Ka num Jeeb Goong 3pcs absolutely delicious and recommended and the Kui-Chay also 3pcs. We then had the Green Curry with chicken which was very tasty, not hot, but very pleasant and filling. Sadly this venue does not have a liquor licence and we only found this out on arrival, sadly we were not informed when we booked telephonically, so had soft drinks. I rate this restaurant at a 7/10 and will definately return.

Finally got the chance to visit Erawan on Saturday night, and it was such a treat. Service was friendly and fast. Food was delicious! Enjoyed a chicken tom yum soup (medium heat) for starters, which was extremely spicy! My soup consisted of spicy broth, chicken, mushrooms and a hint of lemongrass. For mains I ordered a red curry with chicken (medium heat). This was not as spicy as the soup but still left a pleasant, spicy tingling in the mouth. Veggies were crunchy and the sauce was rich and flavoursome. I'll definitely be back for more!

What an incredible experience, the minute you walked in you felt like royalty. The service was first class and the food is some of the best Asian food you can get in South Africa. I highly recommend it.

Atmosphere in restaurant was good, nice and warm feel. Food was very good, dishes were tasty, with good spiced and flavours. My least favourite was the stir fry, felt there was a bit too much onion and the onion was chunky. Desert was also nicely done not too sweet. Overall I enjoyed the restaurant and would recommend to other people.

Great Thai selection of foods. No liquor licence at present (2018), which means diners can bring their own wine (nice for a change). Intimate and efficient. Great experience for those looking to try something different.
Kriska Liebenberg
My second time visiting Erawan and on botg occasions it has been a delight! The staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious with a beautiful balance of sweet, sour and savoury flavours. Would definitely recommend!
Shan Ambrose
Beautiful restaurant with a really cosy atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful. If they are full, you can have a drink at the bar whilst you wait. Food was delicious, but quite mild in terms of spice.
Candice Leila
Just celebrated my birthday here. Delicious thai food, quick service and beautiful decor, just remember to bring your own alcohol as they have no liquor licence but do have a corkage option.
Rosemary Giralt
A great authentic Thai experience. Assorted dim sum, crispy wantons , noodles with all manner of proteins filled with fragrant chili basil and garlic. Order hot you will sweat profusely....rather go for medium heat. Creatively carved vegetables , very pretty doll like waitresses charming Thai decor add to the authenticity of Erawans experience.Ps you pay minimal corkage if you take your own wine.

Very good first impression. Efficient front of restaurant. Knowledgeable about all the vegetarian options. The lady who served me mentioned she had never seen me before and asked for my name. Very open and inviting. Thank you!

WENT THERE LAST NIGHT A) NO POLITE THAI GIRLS SRVICE, B) NO PRAWNS FOR STARTERS C) TO CROWN IT ALL NO DUCK. THIS RESTAURANT HAS GONE DOWN THE DRAIN. MICHEIL

Having had superb meals at Erawan in Johannesburg, I was very disappointed in this outlet. The meal tasted somewhat Westernized and not authentic. The service was very quick which leads me to believe that everything is re-heated which is why many of the dishes where dry.
Leah Brousse
I keep on going back to this place for their dumplings and green curry. Love it! The restaurant does not have the best set up though but that is something I think anyone can forgive if the food is that good.
Natalie
Been trying to bring hubby here for a while and finally managed to get the chance for our anniversary.
The service was absolutely top notch (as always) and the food - wow wow wow
Definitely one of my favorite Thai restaurants
Will most assuredly be back

So after watching the rugby at Newlands we decided to go to Erawan in Wyberg for supper. This has been by far the best thai food I have eaten in years. The food is soooo good, ate really slowly just to enjoy every second of the meal. I had the kui chay which are traditional dumplings with prawns. It was fantastically tasty. If you love dumplings, you could even order more and then eat it as a meal. Thats how good it is. For a main I had the crispy duck... there are no words to describe the party that occurred in my mouth whilst eating this satisfying meal with egg fried rice. Just outstandingly delicious. If I could , I would eat at this place every night. Real quality food.

Great food, excellent service and ambiance.
Never disappoints and it is a pleasure to dine at this restaurant.
The staff are friendly and the food is authentic and fresh.
Leila Smeyatsky
Incredible, fresh food. I have tried a variety of their dishes and have loved them all. Definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys Thai cuisine!
Stephane Rogovsky
Sushi on the menu, chopsticks at the table (Thai people eat with a fork and a spoon) and bad food. I've been in many thai restaurants around the world, including in Thailand and this one is bad. Dim sum way too compact, the green sauce of chicken curry was more like a soup than a creamy sauce as it should be, the rice is tasteless and the "hot, thai style" is more like a medium-hot than anything else. I just did not enjoy this restaurant at all
Simone Izzard
Consistently good Thai food, probably the best I've had in Cape Town. Fresh, clean flavours and excellent condiments. Complimentary prawn chips to start which is a nice touch. Streets ahead of the usual take away Asian fare. Decor is visually appealing and service is quick and efficient. Will definitely be back.

What a great restaurant, I and a friend of mine were there on a very cold night last week, looking for authentic Thai food and we were not disappointed. We had starters, mains and desert THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. I'd definitely recommend it. A tad bit pricey especially the sushi (it was totally worth it though) but other than that the service was ok. Looking forward to returning
Lauren Niekerk
Great authentic Thai restaurant in a good location (though parking may be difficult to find). Server was polite, helpful and efficient. The food was great - spicy and full of flavour! For desert, we had the rice pudding and banana fritters which were also great! Unfortunately I only managed to take a picture of the desert and not the main course but would still recommend you give this place a try if you are in the area.

Great food and stunning decor can only do so much when the service is bad. Our food was delicious but my stepdad had to send his food back because there was far too much chilli in it (he had specifically ordered the mild). When the bill came we saw that they had overcharged my mum and stepdads meals by R30. After inquiring, we were told that the crispy pork (which they had ordered) was more expensive than the regular pork which was on the menu. This would usually be fine except that this extra charge is nowhere on there menu and wasn't disclosed to us by our waitress when ordering. I eventually got the bill amended but with great difficulty and a crappy attitude from the hostess. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
Amy Oosterbaan
The food was overpriced for the quality and taste, and the service was terrible. We were seated for nearly 15 mins before anyone came to even get a drinks order.
Melissa Cowan
Making a call to reserve a table here was worth it. I had the prawn and waterchestnut dumplings which were out of this world and an excellent Thai Green Curry. Unfortunately, I also wanted Sushi but their Sushi bar was closed on that particular day. Their sweet soya sauce was absolute heaven.
Mariska Meyer
Fantastic sushi, the deep fried coconut milk was very interesting will definitely order it again. Booking is essential. Beautiful interior fantastic service
Derek Miller
It is ages since we were last at Erawan and I was thrilled to read the excellent reports on Zomato. The atmosphere is light and airy, clean and crisp. The service was efficient and unobtrusive. For starters we shared 2 portions each of chicken spring rolls and chicken satay. Both were tasty but a little too dry for my liking. The peanut sauce was great. I had the Crispy Duck on vegetables which was excellent. The veg was crisp and fresh and the sauce delicious. The Penang Curry is not usually served with duck but we asked for it and it was produced without any questions. It was great but the sauce was a bit watery as green curries often are. The chicken Penang was rated 4/5, and the Stir fry with cashews was also really good. The chocolate mousse was rich and decadent but beware: consider sharing, it is very sweet. Overall a great evening and good to see this lovely Thai restaurant still going strong after so long. They also have Sushi and Dim Sum which both looked great.
Debbie Bergmann-harris
Our go to!!! Have not yet tried their sushi which I think is a new addition, but we are constantly feeling homesick for Thailand everytime we visit (which is fairly often) more praise than that is hardly necessary.
Sabrina Mortimer
What a lovely place! I went with my boyfriend and two of my sisters for lunch whilst we were in Cape Town. We were greeted with smiles and the service was wonderful the whole time. The decor is elegant and pretty. We ordered water to drink and got some prawn crackers to snack on. They are delicious and a creative snack instead of bread. We ordered dumplings and spring rolls for starters, to share, and then the sweet and sour crispy pork, beef and oyster sauce and crispy duck. The dishes do not come with rice so we ordered 2 sides of egg fried rice (2 is the perfect amount for 3 or 4 people).
Everyone enjoyed the food and not a single complaint! The best was definitely the pork - it is a must to try if you go!

Update : I changed my rating from 5 to 4.5 as I recently went again and was a little disappointed in the pork this time - it was not as crispy as last time (had probably been sitting a while before getting to us.) but everything else was still amazing.

Absolutely superb food!

An authentic Thai dining experience. The menu selection is fantastic. Obviously sushi and dim sum, are not Thai but they offer a selection of both and everything was very well prepared.

The highlight was the actually Thai food though. Noodles were absolutely packed with flavour and the red currys ingredients, fresh and delicious. They offer a great wine selection too.

The service wasn't great but I've had worse. Could have just been a bad day.

Really, really great value.
Kerryn Rehse
Went to Erawan for the first time for a friend's birthday, and as a lover of Thai flavours I was excited to try their fare. I was quite disappointed. I had the green curry, which was very mild bordering on bland for Thai curry standards. The decor and atmosphere are good, but food was a let down.

Having been to Thailand twice, I was quite excited to hear about a restaurant with a taste of Thai and it didn't disappoint. The name Erawan is interesting and refers to the elephant god. Elegant dining room with a lovely setting, this place whisks you to a different world that brings back good memories of my travels to Thailand.

As you sit down a bowl of prawn crackers served with a selection of dipping sauces are presented to munch on whilst making your choice from their extensive menu.

We opted for a selection of dim sum delights. Each dish is accompanied by their own sauce, some more pungent than others. Deep fried prawns on toast lightly spiced with coriander, chili and soya sauce. Punchy flavours and very delicious on the palate. Crispy, crunchy wontons were served with a sweet chilli sauce. Lovely flavours from the Chicken Skewers marinated in exotic herbs and coconut milk. The peanut sauce accompanied the skewers was absolutely delicious.

Har Gao - delightful parcels of spinach and cream cheese certainly didn't disappoint. A favourite for me was the spicy chicken dumpling (Sa La Pao Gai) served with bags of flavour of coriander, ginger and garlic. The Sa La Pao Nuea or otherwise known as Spicy beef dumplings with mushrooms were really good. I enjoyed the juicy and full of flavour prawn dumplings filled with bamboo and water chestnuts (Ka Num Jeeb Goong). Last but not least Kui-Chay - Prawn and chives dumplings which was superb and was enjoyed with a good spicy sauce that lingers in your mouth!

A place where a combination of flavours makes for an unforgettable experience in true Thai style.
Chetna Black
One of the more authentic Thai restaurants in Cape Town. Has a fancier feel and the place is beautifully decorated. Extensive menu - dim sum is lovely and the curries are divine! A local favourite.

Thank you to my good foodie friend JotterJo for the recommendation. We heard great things about their Dim Sum so drove for a quick early supper/ late lunch on a Saturday. Shame the place was empty because the food was really good.

Every piece we had fresh and tasty. We basically went through the entire Dim Sum menu and tired everything. I liked the Prawns on Toast but wished they were bigger. The dumplings were not full of water and full of flavor. I'm a real sucker for Dim Sum so it's good to find good places in Cape Town.

My only complaint was they bought everything out in one hit when I asked to stretch it out but no real big problem.

Decor is very Thai orientated and service is friendly. They had a couple of chairs by the main service desk where we thought they gave Thai foot massages but it wasn't the case.

A good spot to check out if you are in Wynberg.

Delicious well presented Thai food and a treat to savour. Lunchtimes are generally rather quiet however, so save this restaurant for evenings. Delightful decor but I don't rate the attitude of their staff and this is why I'll not go back there again. Their sister restaurant, Kitima in Hout Bay...
Sometimes a long, lazy luncheon & some fine dining is just what you need. Nestled on Wolfe street in the quaint & picturesque Chelsea; is Erawan Thai Restaurant. Here since 2012 chef Noom, crafts his art.

The interior is pristine, orderly & immaculate. Soft, gentle music sets the scene as the hostess bows in a welcome greeting.

We nibbled on prawn crackers while me made our selection. We started with a plate of fresh prawn california rolls; it was perfection. Then it was on to try their well known dim sum. The Sa La Pao Gai (steamed spicy chicken dumplings with coriander, ginger & garlic) were light & flavourful. The Kui-Chang (steamed prawn dumplings with chives, thai soya & spiced chilli sauce) were absolutely heavenly. I could have eaten a whole plateful! The deep fried chicken wontons with sweet chilli sauce were crispy.

For mains we had the most exquisite beef in oyster sauce with shrooms, peppers, onions. It had a medium bite yet the sesame fragrance came through. The sweet & sour pork with al dente veg soaked up an intense tomato based sauce.

There was no room in the inn for dessert so we will come back for that another time.
A very enjoyable meal indeed!

Our go-to place for a special evening of the most delicious thai food imaginable. Great ambiance, good service and fantastic selection of food and wine. Firm favourites include all the dim sum, the tom yum soup (which I ordered for take-away one cold day at work) and the crispy duck pancakes to share. The updated menu is fantastic. Favourite restaurant!

This genuine Thai restaurant nestled in Wynberg is definitely worth a visit if you enjoy authentic Thai cuisine. The flavors are rich with great depth provided by just the right blend of fresh ginger, herbs and spices.

The curry was spicy but still enjoyable as the spice was soothed by the coconut milk and jasmine. The queen prawn chef's special had the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, however, the prawns did seem a bit small and ,overall, the food was quite pricy.

The restaurant was quite full which made it seem a bit cramped as the tables were quite close together. This illusion was further enhanced by the somewhat kitsch decor.

Best Thai food I've found in Cape Town, for sure! Great service, wonderful atmosphere. Definitely worth the time and money to visit this place!👌

Having enjoyed numerous very pleasant meals at Erawan, our recent visit was very disappointing. From the cold welcome to luke warm food , the service was very poor. Maybe we had too high expectations .....disappointing .

I'd never noticed this restaurant before but it's clearly a favourite with the locals. Almost all the tables around us were reserved and it was packed all night. The dumplings and spring rolls were delicious but some of the mains were pretty spicy. If you don't do spice remember to ask for the chilli on the side. The service was fast and very professional. Overall a great experience and good food

From the moment we walked in we were well looked after and had a great time. The restaurant is cosy with lovely chairs and tables. Kind of felt like we were back in Thailand. The staff are all friendly and helpful, especially with the names of the dishes and what to have!
We started off with wine (of course) and 3 Dim Sum's; Har Gao, Ka Num Jeeb Goong and Gai Tod- Delicious! We then headed over to the starters page and ordered, well, pretty much everything. We decided to have Dim Sum and starters only and return another time for the mains. That was a great decision as we got to taste a lot more than you usually would. We were so finished but we just had to try the Chocolate Spring Rolls and the Banana Fritters. WOW!
Needless to say we will be back, soon!

Had a delicious dinner tonight at Erawan. A lovely setting with great service. There were quite a few dishes ordered tonight as we were a group of 5. For starters I had the prawn toast which I thoroughly enjoyed. For mains the favorites were the stir fry's. Definitely recommend trying it out with rice or noodles.
For dessert we had the chocolate spring rolls with ice cream which were awesome!
Overall a great night, definitely one of the high tend Thai places so a bit pricy but definitely worth it as the quality, taste and presentation of food was great! 😄
Catherine
We popped in here after our first choice restaurant had closed early due to the public holiday.
Food was delicious, especially the coconut soup starter, and the service was excellent. however, when arrived the manager(?) was rather unimpressed that we hadn't booked, despite them not being even half-full, making us feel quite unwelcome. After that, everything was great.
Nicola Slyper
This place was close to where we were staying so a friend recommended we give it a try. The service was friendly and mostly efficient- there did seem to be a slight delay getting our mains but the other courses were quick.

We shared a range of dim sum, the prawn and chives one was particularly good. I then had the Phad Thai which was lovely. Stuart and I shared the chocolate spring rolls for dessert which were also tasty. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Phoebe Kondylis
I rate this as one of the best thai restaurants in town. The staff are amazing and the food is incredible. I've never been disappointed by a meal there. It's authentic thai food you find in Thailand
Mandy Jones
I'm absolutely crazy about Thai Food, and this place has yet to disappoint! Their extensive menu appeals to all, and their prices are not too steep... You get what you pay for. The ambiance is the perfect setting for an intimate dinner and the staff are super friendly and professional. What I also love is that they offer you the option of how spicy you want your food, and they stick to that! Do yourself a favour and try their had Thai or Khao Phad with chicken or prawn! It's delicious!
Glenn Muller
Popped in for lunch today with a colleague and took advantage of their 1/2 price sushi lunch special (Mon-Fri). Ordered the lotus platter to share and an extra portion of prawn roof . Sushi was yum and value for money (provided one takes advantage of the special).

Another couple shared the crispy duck and pancakes which looked appetizing. If you looking for an authentic Thai experience then Erawan ticks this box with aplomb.

Authentic
Quality food, everything tastes fresh
Best spring rolls I've ever tasted!

.
Lauren Hartzenberg
Such flavourful dim sum at this Southern Suburbs gem. And the choc mousse was oh so decadent. Will definitely be back to try some of the mains. Yum yum yum!
Kate McLeod
Possibly the best Thai restaurant in Cape Town. Always full of people, very friendly Thai waiters and waitresses. The crispy duck is delicious, a must have.
Gabriela Limberis
What a lovely little spot in Wynberg with a laid back authentic atmosphere .
Fine Thai dining at its best, we had a number of dishes all of which were fantastic. A word of caution, when they say the hot is hot... They aren't lying!
Claudia Penny
Erawan is one of the best and most authentic Thai restaurants in Cape Town. From the moment you walk in, you are looked after by friendly staff who offer excellent service. I would strongly suggest sharing a few starters among a group, because they're all so delicious.

If you're looking for a cheap meal, the Tom Yum soup is R45 and FILLING! On the other hand, the duck pancakes is one of the most expensive dishes on the menu but is so incredible! I've never had a bad meal so actually you'll do well no matter what.

Will 100% be back.
Thuvesh Naidoo
What a place, felt like I was back in Thailand... My wife and I had the Kwanteao chicken soup for a starter, I cannot explain how amazing this soup was. I felt like jumping into the bowl. It was exactly like you would have it in Phuket. For mains we had Pad Thai and the crispy duck... Wow done to perfection... For a sweet treat, I had to go with the sticky rice pudding this dish hit the spot after an amazing experience... Can't wait to go back.
Amy
Delicious food! Was slightly disappointed at the Sweet and Sour Chicken, it had a very artificial flavor. Other than that, lovely experience.
Ritesh Bhattacharya
Rewarding experience. Tasteful and flavorful Thai food right next door. Plenty of good things going for this place. Therefore I would highlight only 2 things that can be tad better A. Pricey - for the portions on offer
B. Delayed Service
Nicole Vrede
While writing this I am already planning when I can go back! I stay in the Northern suburbs and have no problem traveling to Wynberg for this delicious Thai food.

We shared a few starters and they were all lovely, packed with flavour and good value for money. The dim sum is done exactly how I like it, and you can taste the fresh ginger, garlic and chilli.

Erawans stirfrys beats any traditional Thai restaurant. When I went to Thailand I was expecting this type of food. I literally left nothing in my plate. Their food is just so delicious with lots of fresh vegetables. The egg fried rice is amazing, best in Cape Town, I could have eaten that by itself.

I enjoyed the service, they are very sweet and on the ball.

I think their decor could do with a revamp...but I am really looking forward to what they do with the new garden branch.
Peter Reck
The service was great and the food outstanding. Perfect place for an excellent lunch. We had a the local wine list which was great. Always a treat to come here.
Bryan Vally
Superb food! Halfway through my main course I had already made multiple resolutions to return. The atmosphere is chilled, the decor perhaps a little kitsch. It is ALL about the food though!
Stuart
Erawan is a gem of a Thai restaurant hidden away in the Chelsea part of wynberg.
The setting is very elegant and smart and was especially inviting on a cold night out.
Service was quick and efficient. We opted for starters.
The prawn dim sum was delicious. My wife had the Thai style fish cakes.
For mains we both had the deep fried crispy fish with chilli paste. The fish was kingklip. Fresh and very tasty.
All in all a stunning Thai style restaurant. We want to make this a regular venue.
Where-oh-where
Thai food at it's best! The setting is a bit tired and uptight, but I'm rating this restaurant on the food alone. I've been in search of a red duck curry to take me back to Bangkok, and I finally found it. The crispy pork basil is also amazing! My advice would be don't waste your space on starters, instead order multiple mains and share (3 between 2 people).
Anneli Wiese
First time at Erawan and was pleasantly surprised. Spacious authentic interior and friendly professional staff. The dim sum was pretty good and the Phad Thai noodles with prawns was really tasty! ! I would definitely recommend Erawan for authentic Thai food!
Alan Tucker
Very nice and spacious. Beautiful interior with a large authentic menu. Reasonable pricing with excellent food. Good service. Highly recommend.
This restaurant is a must-visit, especially if you are a fan of dim sum. Best dim sum I've had in Cape Town for sure! Also had a delicious curry. Good service and will definitely be back!
Cherice Whewell
Not just any Thai hot spot - but a truly authentic Thai experience in the heart of suburbia. The food was outstanding! The duck & pancakes was one of the best Thai dishes I've ever had. The overall tasting experience is mind blowing, not to mention the interesting art & decor on the walls. Great selection of wine too. This cozy and friendly Thai spot is a must try. I would definitely come again!
Denny Mo
Cooked by real Thai people their food is simply amazing. The decor is stunning, very hard to get bookings there but if you go after 8:30 you should find yourself a space for the late diners. A must have Thai restaurant!
Andrew Campbell
Great return visit with one of our favourite couples - and had a great time

Party: Solo and Irene, who hadn't been before.

Atmosphere: Full, busy, nice table
My meal: Shared prawn dim sum, crispy wantons, prawn toast, beef red curry, prawns with egg fried rice. Beers, bubbly, and red wine. Finished with litchi rice pudding. All superb!
Staff: attentive, pleasant

Definitely will return and recommend
Tay
What a fantastic restaurant! I found it on Zomato when looking for a nearby restaurant and eastern cuisine. The first impressions were great (prawn chips and dips!). The restaurant was beautifully decorated and packed with people. Our food was fresh, piping hot and completely delicious. The service was also great. didn't have one complaint :) will definitely be back!
Carrie Le Roux
Erewan is a great asset to the southern suburbs. The standard of food on the menu is great and because it is always consistent, it can easily become a 'regular favorite'. The service staff are all Thai ladies who are so attentive and demure that one really feels well cared for. The service, in my opinion, is a big part of Erewan experience. Be sure to book and don't miss the delicious crispy wonton. Erewan is also a great option for takeaways as they prepare the food in lightning speed. The restaurant in general, is very efficiently run.
Dwaine Van Vuuren
I am surprised by the lower ratings here. This is a favourite venue of mine to treat the wife once a month. You have to book. The service I feel is amazing and those Thai waitresses don't miss a thing and think of filling your drinks seconds before you contemplate it yourself. Whilst I always have my favourite starter I always experiment with the main and never come home dissapointed. The corkage is cheap which is important if you want to treat yourself with a good wine. The venue is neat and super clean and Thai waitresses super friendly. It's quaint that they are not fully fluent in English and with a bit of imagination you could easily be sitting somewhere in Thailand. The consistency of the service is what keeps me going back
